How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: metagaming is the act of taking advantage of a knowledge that IRL person have, in order to change the decisions done by the character he is currently playing. Namely, using knowledge that isn't accessible to a character inside the game, but is accessible to the person playing in this character in order to change the decision made by this character.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Powergaming is the act of giving yourself a overpowered and/or unrealistic, overpowered attributes during playing a game which requires shared imagination (mostly, and in the context of this server - roleplaying). Powergaming include but not limited to: achieving a feat that basic common sense is enough in order to conclude that it isn't possible, dictating the reactions of other characters involved in a roleplay and giving yourself ridiculous attributes (such as being able to kill with a blink of the eye)

Iolas is wearing an expressionless look at his face, and gives a sharp and cold look at the eyes of this man, what a nuisance... He speaks softly "I wish to expand my knowledge." Iolas is looking around with a disgusted look at hos face. "Tell me, do you know of any libraries, centers of knowledge and progression or a community of scientists that this stinking city has to offer?". Of course he does not expect anything, Iolas is waiting for a response, expecting to find a confused expression from the so called gentleman.
