    How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Metagaming is applying knowledge of the game known as a player to your character, thus crippling roleplay possibilities and hurting the overall quality of the story.
    How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Powergaming is the act of applying nonsensically or unfairly strong powers to your character, thus making them overpowered and similarly cheapening the narrative flow of the story. On a less formal note, the immediate example that comes to mind is a kid on a playground saying "no, but, uh, I have a forcefield! So, I use my supermega beam and destroy you!" In general, just a hyperjuvenile thing to do.

"Ah!" Alice's face visibly brightens as she realizes the man is talking to her.  The energy she feels from exploring without her parents and truly existing on her own still gets her riled up, regardless of how long she's been away.

"Hello, sir!" She thrusts out her hand for a firm handshake, not waiting for a response before continuing. Her clothes are muddied and torn in places, a shoddy style betraying her educated accent.
"I'm here to continue my quest!" Her hand remains outstretched, a wide toothy smile plastered on her face.
