How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Agree on rules Before starting the roleplay discuss and agree on the rules and boundaries with the other players. This will help ensure everyone is on the same page and prevent powergaming.

Play fair Don't try to make your character unbeatable or perform impossible feats. Also, don't control other players' characters without their permission.

Respect each other's characters: Each player's character is unique, and it's important to respect their strengths and weaknesses. Don't try to force emotes or actions on someone else's character.

Collaborate Roleplay is a collaborative effort, and it's important to work together to create an enjoyable experience for everyone. Encourage others to participate and make suggestions to help build the story.

Embrace consequences Accept the consequences of your character's actions and decisions. If you do something unrealistic or unfair, be open to correction and don't try to justify it.

How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Metagaming can also be unfair to other players, as it gives some characters an advantage they wouldn't otherwise have. For example, if your character knows something they shouldn't, they could use that information to gain an upper hand in a conflict, which wouldn't be possible in a fair and balanced roleplay.

To avoid metagaming, it's important to keep in-character and out-of-character information separate. Try not to share or act on information that your character wouldn't reasonably know, and only use information that is in-character. This will help maintain the integrity of the shared narrative and ensure everyone has a fair and enjoyable roleplaying experience.

You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

Example: (delete this)

"Oh, I just, uh…" you stutter, tensing up. You eye the crone, then back outside the tent. For a moment, the air thickens with anticipation, until

You take a deep breath and begin to tell the old hag your story. You explain how you were on a journey to find a powerful artifact, rumored to be hidden deep in the swamps. You tell her of the long, treacherous journey you had to make to reach this town, and how you had heard that she, being the local wise woman, may have knowledge of the artifact's whereabouts.

The old hag listens intently, nodding her head as you speak. When you finish, she leans back and strokes her chin thoughtfully.

"Yes," she says, "I do know of the artifact you speak of. But it is not something that should be taken lightly. Many have sought it out, but few have returned."

You lean forward, eager to hear more. The old hag continues,

"If you truly wish to find this artifact, you must first prove yourself worthy. The swamps are full of dangers, and only the bravest and most determined will survive."

With a newfound determination, you thank the old hag for her advice and leave the tent. You know that the journey ahead will be difficult, but you are determined to find the artifact and prove yourself worthy.
