The air is thick and misty, the atmosphere warmly inviting, when suddenly, borne of silence, a loud pounding cries from the door. An old hag responds to this abrupt event with a frantic, annoyed yelp... "who's there!?". A loud voice booms from this spark... "a traveler lost, in need of thine aid.". A brief return to the status quo of silence appears and then disappears, banished by a hesitant reply... "come... in...". The door flies open, revealing a well-dressed, if odd for taste young man. The hag beckons him a seat, and he obliges. Awkward, anxious silence follows, until broken by the stranger. "I suppose by faintest suspicion you wish for thou to explain himself?" the hag grants him a slow nod of the head. "I am a diplomat, for a state foreign of here. I represent a prince by name of Leo, the second.". The hag nods again, this time in a more subtle manner. "I have here come for a desire of knowledge.". The hag inserts a response, after a momentary pause... "I am but an old woman, what could though possibly want of me?". The man replies... "who rules these lands?". The hag answers. Another question follows. Again, the hag answers. By the end of the affair, the young man has mined the hag's mind of all he could, then, as suddenly as he appeared, he left, with little more than a giving of thanks for tolerating his rude interruption.

How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Always consider both common sense and fair play when role-playing with others. If an action could conceivably be reasonably argued as being unrealistic or unfair, don't carry it out. This should be judged based on mutual agreement between all parties involved.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Judging from my experience as a DM in Dungeons & Dragons, player characters who act upon knowledge they should not canonically have revokes the immersion and realism from role-playing.
