You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.” I stare at the woman, avoiding her gaze and knowing that being seen as disrespectful could endanger my life.
I cautiously sit on the ratty cushion, dusting it off and gently wiping my hands on my already mud covered robes. "As you wish, ma'am. I was born in a small village on the east coast of Celia’nor, to a high elven couple. I had one sibling, my younger brother, born three years after me, who I was required to take care of at all times. I was quickly apprenticed to a minorly well known mage, my parents hoping to secure me a future in the capitol, and took quickly to my studies. My parents were proud, but my brother got sick, and didn’t get better. I had to focus on him and trying to heal his disease, but his condition worsened day after day. My parents grew desperate and forced me to make a deal with my master - he took 20 years of my servitude and absolute obedience to him to lengthen my brothers life by 20 years, life for life. I was forced to clean and care for him at all hours of the day for a tortuous 20 years, continuing being his apprentice and him teaching me magic with me growing more powerful. The day when my service was over, I snapped. He didn’t last long against me, and I burned his corpse and spread the ashes. My past actions have haunted me for the past 50 years, and I wander across the lands looking for a way to absolve my crime. I no longer speak to my parents or my brother, who benefited from the deal and caused my life to be hell. I am here to help, to grow, and to gain more power to heal my brother and bring back my master so that I may finally have peace."
