How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Having your character know something that they shouldn't because you gained that knowledge out of rp. Taking in knowledge through any out of rp means and applying them to your character and their knowledge. You can read up on proper swordfighting techniques but if your character hasn't even wielded a sword in their life, they wouldn't become a master of swordfighting just because you know out of rp how to fight with one. You may hear about events ongoing within rp through any kind of OOC chat but that doesn't mean your character suddenly knows what's happening. Your character needs to experience these things in order to know them. You can't just spew out some dude's name the moment you approach them, never met in your life, just because you see their name above their head.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Godplaying, powergaming, overpowerment; Typically brute forcing roleplay in ways that negatively impact everything. Metagame can already be damaging, but powergame in my own eyes is far worse. The quickest example I can think of is tanking attacks in a CRP scenario and pouring out counter attacks that give nobody a chance of reacting or saving themselves from being hurt or killed. Most powergamers I have seen try to give no ability to counter-act anything they dish out and attempt to essentially take control of the roleplay around them. It often goes to a point where some will attempt to do actions for people's characters, which is just character hijacking. Say you're roleplaying as a completely normal human being and your gut gets impaled by a projectile. You shouldn't normally be able to shrug that off and proceed to say that you hack off some guy's arm. You need to react to the fact that something just shot through your own gut and you're bleeding or even dying slowly, and you need to give your victim a chance at avoiding getting their limbs removed. Always take in mind your character's limitations based upon their physical and mental capabilities. A toddler wouldn't be able to beat the devil out of a hulking beast of an adult unless you're powergaming.

Looking about at all the spectacles his eyes could behold, taking in all the sights and smells, Sancho's attention shifted abruptly as he was halted in his own tracks. He eyed the gent up-and-down, looking at their clothing choice. When he cleared his throat to speak, he responded in a warm, friendly tone of voice. " Ah, a wonderful city it is. I arrive for.. hrm.. one of those reasons. " As he continued, his voice let out a dull hum. " Mmrm, adventure.. maybe. If there is enough to explore and enough to gain out of it. I come seeking.. hm-- How would you say.. " Sancho seemed to lose focus as he struggled to think of how to describe to the man what he wished to say. " Purpose? Finding, erhm.. a place. Job opportunities, paths to take, my friend. " He nodded to himself, happy to finally manage to spit out what he was trying to say.
