It was the Mali’aheral that first mastered the arcane and all of its intricacies; Larihei’s most potent sorcerers, those who delved into the void as they saw the power of creation that lay within it. 

Through the precarious though careful study of the Mali’thill, many sorcerous arts that descendents far foreign to the Silver City practice can be traced in lineage of bestowment to those potent magus who pursued elMaehr’sae hiylun’ehya.

Through the recent centuries we have seen the untempered, unrefined usages of Void derived sorcery, and due to these disgraceful abuses many ruptures and rifts have been created: some alluring to the mindless and abhorrent wretches that reside formless within the oblivion. It is for this reason that it is not a mere whim, but a sanctioned compulsion to revivify our Sacred Ilumiran who protect the Arcane arts. Those within are bound to study and practice such sorceries with caution. The experimentation done within shall serve the purpose of garnering greater understanding in Void-derived entities and their anathemas; so that our Silver City may be protected, and our realm held intact.

Structure

The Blessed Diarchy

The Blessed Diarchy oversees and directs the Ilumiran: delegating actions and directives to those below, as well as sanctioning or condoning actions or experiments.

elOkarir’maehr

The Councillor in charge of : The Managerial position that seeks to fulfil the directives given from above, also acting as a figure of authority whilst the Diarchy’s efforts are placed elsewhere. This individual is also in charge of directing expeditions and other studious activities.

elEhieral

The Found: Magus of any variety, all of which have mastered at least one arcane art and perhaps are learning more.

elUhieran

The Seekers: These are new apprentices, low ranking magus who have only begun their journey into the Arcane and all that it encompasses. This role is reserved for those that have not yet properly mastered any arcane art, and serve as apprentices under higher ranks.

Prospects

Our Ilumiran are free to pursue elMaehr’sae however they wish; enchanters, lecturers, adventurers or simple scholars. They are implored to take on at least one apprentice as to maintain the passing of their arcane prowess. In eras past these were typically those of Silver Blood unless specific permission otherwise, however in this iteration such regulations shall be laxed. The only requirement is that such apprentices whilst learning under their magus are also taught subjects of purity and our people’s rich cultural history.

Facilitating oneself within the Ilumiran gives them prospects to share and learn the wisdom and teachings of others; to safely practice and exercise their skill alongside other magus with nearby medical facilities as well as experiment within safer confines and with overseen management should something go awry; additionally those within the Ilumiran will not forget that they are within a guild that roots can be traced back centuries; they are joining a lineage of established and profound magus.

Registration

To facilitate yourself within the Ilumiran you must seek out either members of the Diarchy, or the current Okarir’maehr. Upon their approval that you are pure of mind and body, you will be enrolled into either the elEhierian or elEhieral - Apprentices or Magus. Those unattuned are capable of enrolling, though are strictly prohibited from requesting to be taught from any of the other members; A completely unattuned elEhierian must be selected. In the meanwhile however, their fitness and talents are put to use as they are offered lectures and adventures alongside the magus.

Members of the elEhieral are capable of taking on apprentices and guests into the building, though they must still seek out a member of the triad: Maheral, Sohaer or Okarir'maehr to officiate themselves within the Ilumiran.

The Eternal College is a bastion of progress and history, where old and new intertwine in one singular home. It contains archives of ancient records, all neatly arranged upon the shelves of this bastion of wisdom. Yet, The Eternal College is more; it is a source of education for the studious thill who wish to expand their knowledge and understanding of the realm. Honoring the wisdom and legacy of the first malil’thilln practitioners, it has also taken on the responsible teaching and practice of the voidal arts. Holding to its name, The Eternal College, under the governance of Larihei’s children, shall see that knowledge endures, eternal and undying.

(Honorable History)

To understand the realm's oldest collection of books and relics, we must understand its history and why it became the fount of intellect that it is today. From the shores of Athera and Asulon in the Emerald Peninsula, the mali’thill found their home. Haelun’or prided itself on its rich scholastic culture, after Larihei departed Malinor and led her people into a new dawn and the infancy of Maehr’sae Hiylun’ehya.  These same elves who readily partook in the golden pools transcended mundane elvendom  

There is no clear record of how The Eternal College was running before Atlas, which saw both the fall and resurrection of the Silver State under the leadership of Dimaethor Visaj and the library itself under the Okarir’maehr, Odessa Visaj. Following Odessa’s passing, The Eternal Library was headed by a long line of Okariran’maehr, with policies changing between each. 

It is during the descendants’ time on Almaris that the College rose to popularity once again and amassed favor amongst the hungry scholars and promising mages beyond elvendom under the leadership of Illyara Valarieth and then Valindra Liavyre under Sohaer Othelu Orrar. Debates and lectures were held frequently to instill traditional and longstanding values into the ranks of the Blessed Citizenry as well as the spreading teachings in the subjects of Alchemy, the Void, and foreign history. It was during this time in Karinah’siol that the silver state had become the land where dozens of individuals could come and learn under the intellectual society of the Mali’thill.

The Eternal College and Library faculty carry out many tasks from simple record keeping to more advanced events and lectures. The Eternal College hosts a variety of teachers and specialized professors who strive to see progress made in the minds of all who respect elmaehr’sae hiylun’ehya. It matters not the subject, for the staff of The Eternal College seek to ensure that all is taught to the same immaculate standard, as befitting a society that has thrived on the pursuits of intellect and wisdom for millennia. The Eternal Library, on the other hand, requires staff to guide and aid in research personally. It is this, along with the basic stewardship, that would preoccupy a majority of a librarian's time.

Tilruir’naelu - The headmaster of The Eternal College and direct assistant to the Okarir’maehr. They oversee the daily functions of the college, managing faculty, and ensuring the curriculum is up to par with intellectual and cultural ideals.

Tilruir’indor - The head librarian of The Eternal Library and direct assistant to the Okarir’maehr. Tasked with the preservation, organization, and expansion of the Library’s vast archives. 

Naeulonn -  Teachers, representing various disciplines, ranging from the classical to the arcane. They are held to the highest standards of scholarship and conduct, entrusted with the spreading of knowledge. Above all, they must uphold safe and responsible practice.

Diraar’indor - A librarian of The Eternal Library entrusted with the most basic tasks. Assisting in cataloging books, guiding visitors, and ensuring all rules are observed properly.

Fer’maehr

 (Library Card)

The Eternal Library Card grants one access to the wealth of knowledge contained within the library. Each card is personally inscribed with the bearer's name to prevent duplication, along with being placed within the records of The Eternal Library. Some advanced cards are reserved for senior researchers and officials, allowing permission to access restricted collections.

An application must first be submitted to obtain a library card, requiring the donation of one unique book [original or copy of original] or a donation of fifty minas, to demonstrate the applicant’s sincere pursuit of knowledge and a basic understanding of the rules. The Blessed Citizenry are allowed some leeway in this process due to their lifelong commitment, but anyone else will be expected to contribute to the library first through what is deemed an appropriate donation. Should all the papers fall into order, a librarian will offer a brief explanation of the layout and finally issue the library card. Violating any rule will result in the revocation of your card.

While adhering unfalteringly to Silver Law, The Eternal Library upholds its own set of rules to ensure the library remains a hub of learning for all. A high class institution is one bound by civility. As such, additional laws are set in place to ensure that lessons go uninterrupted and nothing is permitted to disturb the peace within both The Library and the College. College Staff retains the right to enforce these laws, though if a visitor to the library proves particularly resistant to removal, elsillumiran may be called to remove them forcibly. 

It should be noted that while Silver Law takes precedence and elsillumiran are permitted to enforce Silver Law within the halls of The Eternal Library, they should still strive to follow library rules unless it is necessary to do otherwise.

LIBRARY LAWS

1. One must maintain either silence or a low tone of voice. This is to ensure that all who are studying may do so without interruption.
2. Eating and drinking within the citadel is wholly disallowed to ensure that the volumes remain clean.
3. Casting magic within the halls without membership or permission is prohibited.
4. Tearing, burning, stealing, straining, or even risking the damaging or destruction of knowledge within the citadel is strictly prohibited. Those caught doing so are subject to immediate arrest and trial.
5. Running and climbing within the halls of The Eternal Library is prohibited, as it risks damage to the building and books within.
6. All who lack citizenry and ‘thill blood must donate a book not already in possession of The Eternal Library to make use of the Library’s facilities outside of lessons hosted by The Eternal College.

COLLEGE RULES

1. Classes must be planned before hosting them within the library; unplanned or unscheduled lessons will not be allowed unless hosted by a member of the College staff.
2. Classes hosted must be approved by the Okarir’maehr or Sohaer.
3. Classes may not be interrupted, unless in the event of an emergency or at the discretion of Elsohaer or Okarir’maehr. Those who do so shall be charged by the silver law.

GENERAL RULES

1. Drinking alcohol or smoking is strictly prohibited. 
2. Students and staff alike must wear appropriate attire.
3. Foul language is prohibited.

Since the dawn of our Republic, we in Haelun’or believed in our way of life; MAEHR’SAE HIYLUN’EHYA- progress & Health. We achieved such through studying many topics which delve into the unknown of our world, and record them through our finest books and quills. We preserve the knowledge given to us by other realms, clans, families, guilds and conclaves, all who wished to be remembered. Above all things, people desire is to never be forgotten, and we never forget.  Through hard work, time and patience we built the grand collection of tomes, scrolls and books all in one grand building known as the ETERNAL LIBRARY. 

Built as the haven for knowledge, the Eternal Library stands as a shining beacon for great and promising minds to come together and learn all which their hearts desire. And as such we are happy to announce the grand reopening of Haelun’ors Eternal Library, and invite those who have wished to come and study amongst the brightest minds of Descendant kind, in a place of great knowledge and wisdom.

In the absence of the Eternal College, the Eternal Library seeks lecturers willing to teach about their craft and philosophy. Topics may cover a vast array, although we are most notably interested in that of the Void and its theory, linguistics, alchemy, and natural sciences. Those interested should contact elOkarir’maehr at their earliest convenience so a meeting may be arranged.

I seek not only those who wish to be educated, but also those who wish to educate. Be you seasoned in the arcane, or versed in crafts mundane, scholars of all sorts should be able to share their knowledge to those hungry for it.

As for the lecture I seek to hold within the coming days, it will be on the topic of the Material Alphabet as I seek to educate all who find themself interested from the beginning of my knowledge.

FURTHER UPDATES ON THE ETERNAL LIBRARY

To the Blessed Citizenry, recent updates were made for the Eternal Library where anyone who requires access may apply for a library card should they have donated a book previously. With break-ins rising due to this, it is decided that a second option shall be offered for those who do not wish to spend their time writing their own piece.

For a sum of twenty mina, an access card may be bought for entry into the library. This access card will be changed weekly, therefore continued access will require a weekly fee. Our library card option will still be available for those who would like free entry.

Additionally, citizens of Haelun’or beneath the age of fifty; being one of those who reside in one of our houses, may be allowed access to the library with an of-age sponsor who owns a library card accompanying them.

To the Blessed Citizenry, as well as travelers who seek knowledge, the Eternal Library shall begin an application process for entry. With the recent opening of the gate, it is deemed best to protect the Eternal Library and its knowledge from rogues who seek to steal and vandalize our knowledge.

Applications will require an original work to be left as a donation to the library; this may be any written work, from poems to biology and all inbetween. Applications will not be accepted without this. Upon the acceptance of an application, contact will be made to issue an entry card from elOkarir’maehr. Cards will not be valid unless signed by elOkarir’maehr, Cresence Sythaerin.

THE ETERNAL LIBRARY

1st of The Grand Harvest, Year 138 of the Second Age

Just down the Main Street of Tahn'miar, a magnificent edifice towers high over the Silver City. Tawny domes arch toward the sky, topped by gleaming marble spires that prod at the clouds. Carefully maintained shrubbery and monuments to figures from centuries past surround the structure, its brick walls complimented by silvery embellishments. Citizens bustle in and out of its perpetually open doors at all hours of the day, tomes and papers spilling out of their arms. Before you stands the ancient heart of the city, one of the first and largest of its kind in all of history. Before you stands The Eternal Library.

At the heart of progress is change, and change cannot occur without education. Since Asulon, our blessed institution has served as a bastion for the spreading and sharing of knowledge, the maintenance of historical records, and the preservation of our ancient community. All of these things are paramount to the pursuit of progress.

In accordance with tradition, the Eternal Library shall rise anew in our city of Tahn'miar. As of this elven day, The Eternal Library formally opens its doors – and its catalog – to the public. 

LIBRARY RULES

For the establishment to flourish, we must protect the knowledge that lies within, for a sturdy foundation is essential to the integrity of the structure. We invite all permitted visitors and citizens of Haelun'or to the Library, but guests must follow a set of rules under our roof.

We mandate six rules within our hallowed halls.

1. Speak with a low tone in the Library. Do not sully the ears of your studious peers with uncouth barking.
2. Do not bring food or drink into the Library. If you break this rule, you will be subjected to a fine or temporary janitorial employment.
3. Do not alter or destroy Library property. Any damage inflicted upon a Library book will subject you to a fine or a public service task. If severe enough, the damage will be inflicted back upon you yourself.
4. Do not steal books from the Library. Thievery will result in banishment and/or legal repercussions while you are within our walls. Unauthorized reproduction or plagiarism of our tomes is considered thievery as well; offenders will be punished as criminals.
5. Do not redistribute Library books without permission. This, too, may result in punishment and/or banishment.
6. Do not use magic within the Library without express permission from elHeial'thilln. Protect our sacred books by abstaining from spellcasting within our walls. Domestic magic is an exception.

REQUESTING BOOKS

At the release of this missive, basic access – the ability to peruse our collection of tomes – is extended to all citizens and visitors who have passed our gateway vetting procedures. But there can be no spreading of knowledge without the sharing of knowledge, and sharing hinges upon a give and take. Thus, visitors of elcihi'thilln must donate writings to our blessed bastion to be able to request copies of books from our regular catalog. These writings must be submitted after the publishing of this missive.

The requirements for these writings are:

• The subject must be non-fiction or philosophy. Personal tales, journals, and documents will not suffice.
• The donation must be a minimum of 9 pages in length.
• The donation must be the original copy.
• The applicant must author the donated book.
• The donation must be reasonably legible with proper grammar.

Once a book fulfilling these requirements is donated, applicants will be granted a library card for proof of their submission. This library card may be presented to elOkarir’maehr or active mediiran’indor at any time to request books.

LIBRARY EMPLOYMENT

There are many tasks to undertake to preserve our sacred establishment. A variety of roles lie within the hierarchy of the institution:

• Okarir’maehr – The guardian of knowledge and keeper of records. ElOkarir’maehr is the de facto Head of the Library.
• Tilruir’indor – The second-in-command under elOkarir’maehr who manages books. This mali’thill is in charge of sorting, tracking, and maintaining submissions and book requests as well as guiding the Mediiran’indor under them.
• Mediir’indor: Staff members tasked with safekeeping and sorting our sacred catalogue. Librarians must be deeply acquainted with the books upon our shelves.
• Scholars: Staff members who teach in the Eternal College and/or conduct research in the name of maehr’sae hiylun’ehya. 
• Foreign Librarians: Foreign Librarians from nations that maintain good relations with our State will be granted diplomatic partnership with the Library.

THE ETERNAL COLLEGE

Our books may give us knowledge, but knowledge is nothing if not put to use, if not critically engaged with. On the upper two floors of the Library, we have reserved a space for the Eternal College. Here, we will regularly hold courses under four academies – these academies will cover the subjects of thaumaturgy, natural studies, arts, culture, medicine, and history. 

The Eternal Library should be a bastion of knowledge, a foundation for discussion, and a breeding ground for progress. I open its doors in hopes of seeing elcihi flourish under new generations of mali'thill in pursuit of the unknown.

PROGRESS THROUGH INQUIRY

1st of Snow’s Maiden, Year 136 of the Second Age

To the Blessed Citizenry of Haelun’or and allies of the Silver State,

Since time immemorial, we have sought progress through an endless pursuit of knowledge. To achieve this progress, we peer into the unknown; historically, we have done so through our engagement in proper research. The flame of curiosity is one that must be ceaselessly tended to – now, just as always, we must rekindle our fervor for discovery and scholarship.

In hopes of reigniting the flame of progress, Malaurir Silvos Sythaerin shall host three courses on the proper conduct of Independent Research. At the conclusion of this course, students will choose a topic of interest and construct their first theses. We hope to inspire attendees to find at least one topic to fully dedicate themselves to by the course's end.

The course will be structured thusly:

I. Fundamental Research Principles

The first lesson will lay the groundwork for the rest. It will cover possible fields of study, how to set up a hypothesis, how to keep one’s work orderly, and how to properly document one’s findings.

II. Research Safety

The second lesson will focus on safety. Malaurir Silvos will share past mistakes that he and his colleagues have been privy to, mistakes that led to dangerous and precarious situations. Based on own his near-fatal past encounters, the Malaurir will impart wisdom on how to avoid these circumstances.

III. Demonstration and Thesis Crafting

The third lesson will cover a plan for the students' first proper theses. Additionally, a demonstration will be held in the available laboratory space. Those interested will be allowed to partake in a class-wide research project, a project that may be contributed to by all student participants.

The first of the three courses shall take place in three elven days within the Basement of the Eternal Library. All citizens of Haelun’or are highly encouraged to attend; all are called to contribute to the advancement of our venerated society.

Curriculum of Thaumaturgy

6th of the First Seed

With the understanding of Thaumaturgy, an individual will understand the ability of performing feats of magic. It encapsulates the meaning to create or manipulate entities, some of them utterly beyond ones control in natural environments. The objective of this course is to offer students all the theoretical knowledge to be able to understand the magic that is forever present in our lives, as well as granting them the means of beginning the odyssey to becoming true mages themselves.

As such, this class is paramount to cover all the relevant aspects of magics that are possible, whilst not neglecting the details of relevance such as artifact,s magical creatures and the dangers of magic, In the pursuit of progress, much like our forefathers since the days of Larihei, we venture into magic that is unknown.

I. Introduction to Thaumaturgy

Before we delve into the unending ocean of knowledge and potential that is magic, we must first understand the basic principles that allow it to exist in our world. This particular class lays out notions fundamental to any mage, as such students shall be introduced to topics such as Mana theory, Arcane theory, Elemental theory, Auras, as well as the myriad of other knowledge that a mage uses constantly through their career. 

II. Dangers of Magic

With infinite potential comes infinite risk. Magic, to the negligent and unwary, can pose great dangers, dangers that could affect not only the impetuous, but result in grave consequences for innocent bystanders. Within this class, the student will learn mistakes of past mages, students will also be taught catastrophes that magic can produce, with or without one’s neglect or malicious intent. This, along with being taught how to behave as a mage, will teach students how apparent threats of the void to hiylun and how to cope with the initial exposure to such a vast and overwhelming realm.

III. Voidal Theory

The Void is a different plane, independent to the world in which we inhabit. It is a place of infinite potential, a place where nothing and everything is synonymous. It is through energy within the Void that mages are capable of great feats, both wonderful and terrible. It is important, before diving into the perhaps the most common type of magic, voidal magic, to understand how exactly manipulates, that more often than not seems to defy the laws of nature, are even possible. As such, it will be during this class that students will learn the known theoretical aspects of the Void, about its infinite power, volatile nature, its effects and its horrors.

IV. Voidal Magics

Voidal magics are performed through a connection with the Void and at the disbursement of one's Mana. This class is intertwined with those previously mentioned. It is here where students will be taught about Voidal Magics that are possible and the ones they may encounter. In this class one would witness the analysis of elemental magics, conjuration, transfiguration, translocation, illusion and more. Insights are offered in what a mage is capable of through interactions with the Void, and it is hoped that by the end of this chapter the student will be endowed with all the theoretical knowledge needed by a prospecting mage regarding Voidal Magics.

V. Other Magics

Besides the aforementioned, there exists a myriad of other types of magic that do not draw from the Void, magics whose powers derive from deities or an alternative source. Here, students will be exposed to countless miscellaneous magics, each unique and powerful in its own way. Students will be presented to all the theoretical knowledge on these arts and feats and where such endeavors are possible, witness their magical capabilities with their own eyes in an attempt to further understand the mysteries that are a part of our world.

VI. Magical Objects & Artifacts

The everlasting presence of magic and the deep interconnection between our realm and that of the mystical have had the effect of certain objects imbued with unusual magical powers and properties being brought forth or created in our realm. It is important, to prospecting mages, to learn about these artifacts, these objects of interest to scholars and mages alike, about these sources of great power and wonder, about their importance and their uses.

VII. Magical Creatures & Immortal Beings

A great deal of magic objects have been bestowed upon our world, so have creatures of a bizarre nature, observed and examined by the Descendants since the beginning of history. It is vital that we study and recognize these entities as many are a grotesque imitations of life, errors whose very existence is unnatural. Should we come to understand them, it may very well mean the difference between life and death, as these beings, which are more often than not evil, distorted by strong emotion, are often fearless, and therefore, powerful. Within this particular class ,beside those aforementioned entities, shall teach about the immortals, the deities that have stupefied many cultures, beings that were birthed within time itself. This class will deal with their nature and characteristics, uncover their fallibility and try to understand their often exaggerated powers. Thus, after the completion of this ultimate class, students should possess all the theoretical knowledge about our magical world, enabling them to further sail this mystical, ever changing, forbidden sea.

Ancient are we the mali’thill of the Silver state, our civilization long predates the resettling of elcihi’thilln under Malaurir Astoré. 

Understanding our origins, the emergence of our philosophical creed and the traditions of which the Motherland is governed. It is essential to mali’thill regardless of their scholarly aspirations. Our cultural course offers an introductory, whilst encompassing the facets of High Elven culture and philosophy, beginning with Larihei and continuing on to the political tumult of the past century.

High Elves of the Silver State

Origins of the Mali’thill

Our story begins in deep antiquity, during the first Ibleesian war, when old Malin was still king of a unified elven people. Larihei Lohmanih, the daughter of Malin’s eminent advisor and eventual progenitor of the high elven race. A scholar and a teacher, she became a fierce figure which assisted in the pushing back of Iblees, following the end of the war and settling of what we know as Asulon, became a celebrated figure. Her innovations resulted in her being put at the helm of a new scholastic culture, which soon created a divide between the traditional mali which favoured druidism and nature, to those that embraced science and the void. It is at this time that physically distinct mali’thill emerged, with those that bathed within the golden pools discovered by Larihei and her geologists, developing a taller, more lithe figure, with fairer complexion.

Maehr’sae Hiylun’ehya

This is a phrase that all mali’thill are familiar with, one that is repeated and echoed through countless generations. Its substance, is unfortunately, often disregarded. It can be most simply defined through its literal translation: Progress and Heath. The first part accounts to scientific progress, as well as arts and elvenities. Though, any morally righteous pursuit that gives one fulfillment can be included in the phrase ‘maehr’sae’. ‘Hiylun’ or health, pertains to a mali’thills literal well being and physical health, but most importantly, physical purity. With the balance of mind and body, health and progress, can purity and philosophical ascendance be obtained.

Interpreting the Maehr’sae Hiylun’ehya

The interpretation of Maehr’sae Hiylun’ehya is an uncoded philosophy, and is essential to both its understanding and its preservation. Its exact character changes with the times; after all, progress is endless. Especially with new observations and understanding can necessitate alterations to traditions. This particular lesson will introduce the nuance of interpretation through establishing differences and similarities between the views of prior Malauriran, namely Dio Astore and Kalenz Uradir. It should be noted that the philosophies flexibility exists only within a breadth, with its core tenets of mental development and physical purity being unassailable.

The Importance of Tradition

If mali’thill are beings which place great emphasis on free though, what is the purpose of tradition? This is one of infinite confusion and complexity, one which even our most exalted scholars have yet to fully understand. In this rough and dark sea, that teems with information, tradition is our lighthouse. It is a culminated intellect of a nation and centuries of erudites, one that far supersedes any sole individual. Tradition is not an infallible law of physics, but a collective of ideals which one is to draw inspiration and guidance from, so that the mistakes of the past are not pointlessly repeated.

The Necessity of Logic

Logic is the rules of inference that are used to distinguish well-founded propositions from their baseless counterparts. Tradition and the maehr’sae hiylun’ehya’s malleability is essential to the uninhibited pursuit of progress. However, alterations to our creed must only be made after lengthy and due reasonable discourse. Logical thought is at the very core of mali’thill life, and is necessary for a successful state. This lecture will establish the logical thought process and its importance, warning against the whims of unfounded emotion.

An ancient country, our motherland has seen several iterations. Though internal and external duress have seen Silver bend, it has never broken. With the traditional cultural mindset of Mali’thill having been established, this final lecture aims to give a broad account of the various historical conflicts leading up to the present day. Change and conflict is natural and inalienable, and often breeds progress. Dissent should not be unduly stifled, nor should the threat of newness be aggrandized. Silver is eternal, and its path is always corrected by time.

FOREWORD

To the lliran that read this - Karin'ayla, ker'ehya. Welcome to elcihi'thilln - The City of Silver, the City of the Pure. You have been admitted because you passed the first of our tests - of nominal intelligence! Congratulations - but this is where the important part begins. Few truly understand our culture, even within elcihi, even among the aheralan. This is the first in a long step of guides meant to remedy that - and as such, I will tackle the heaviest of our subjects, that of maehr'sae hiylun'ehya and of purity. Do not mistake it for be-all and end-all - part of our oft-shouted catchphrase is constant learning.

Let us begin before I bore you further.

MAEHR'SAE HIYLUN'EHYA

At its unadulterated core, maehr'sae hiylun'ehya means the following - "Progress", maehr'sae, and "Health", hiylun. Many of us shout it, and often - but what does it actually mean?

Progress - maehr'sae - this is the constant movement forwards in society and in personal life. What does it actually mean?

To read and know what came before, so that it can be applied to what comes next.

To write, so that those that come next might learn from those that came before.

To know the reasons behind traditions, so that the worthless are removed and the worthwhile continue.

To understand the line between progress, where lives are better, and madness, where it injures health of person and of state.

To understand the background behind cultures of lesser races - for even wolves have ideas and aspects that can be integrated into our blessed society.

Health - hiylun - this encompasses all of life, but especially mind and body. It is for health that we do not pierce ourselves unnecessarily, nor fight with blades where we can win with words, nor couple with the lesser races - for such a coupling would result in a degeneration of our many blessings. But just as important as the body is the mind - protecting ourselves from insanity, from degradation into stupidity, from corruption of the ideals of progress and health. This also refers to the health of the state, of the community, and of the family unit. It is from this that Purity is derived.

PURITY

Cited constantly by the lesser races as the reason for our transgressions, and by us as the reasons for many deeds, both fair and false - Purity is the concept of self-perfection in health. Some frequent questions, and their answers, are detailed below.

Do we hate the lesser races? Should we respond to their insults?

We do not - for do you hate the squirrel and spew curses at it as it eats pine-nuts? Nonmali are as the squirrel, living entire generations within the time many of us spend pondering particularly profound poems. That they can speak is of little consequence - an annoyance, perhaps, like the cooing of an owl when one is trying to write, but little more. The 'thilln cares not for the insults thrown by those the age of an 'ame oem'ii, but half as wise and twice as crude.

Do we hate other mali?

They are less than, but not lesser - Larihei did not lead our unfortunate cousins to enlightenment, but we are from the same history and of the same base. To couple with one would be to invite the many deviations left in those that did not follow to the Motherland - the inability to act for the family or group of the 'ker, the nativism of the 'ame, the insanity of our most unfortunate cousins in the 'fenn. Tolerate their conversations where possible, but do not let them pull you back into the dark of Malin's teachings. Pity them, but do not hate them.

And what about the 'ata?

This is the exception to the rule. The 'ata are those that were born much like us - blessed in form, given the same opportunities for growth and well-being - but squandered it, choosing to live like animals or as deranged dark mages. Mali'ata are to be despised, and rightly so - for they are those that would rather destroy a place than improve themselves.

Is bloodline an indicator of purity?

Not necessarily - often our brethren have been led astray, indoctrinated when they perceive issues in our State. Yet see their fates; a fallen councillor joined the Druidic Grove and has degenerated into dancing around fires. A bookish woman of my own blessed Talonnii attempted to assassinate the man that raised her, then escaped abroad to plot against Haelun'or even after it had forgiven her. Better blood often indicates a better starting position - but not always.

What makes the pure better?

This is simple - with no other factors, would you rather have a healthy, intelligent man as your ally, or a crippled, insane one? In the same way, we keep company with others that pursue healthiness of mind and body, that pursue progress in learning and life, and that share in our blessings. We separate and cast away the chaff, so to speak, so that we needn't waste our time with pointless endeavors.

Purity is the very core of Mali'thill culture, yet most nowadays are oblivious to that which makes individuals impure. I intend to correct this through a series of lessons which set apart the pure from the 'ata to educate those who are willing and are totally oblivious to, or are partially aware of the culture of Larihei herself.  In this first lesson, we will cover the physical traits of the pure and impure, and briefly outline what should be done with mali of varying levels of impurity. The language spoken among mali is one few now know. It’s something that the Eternal College wishes to bring more to light and thus a class with the purpose of teaching the basics of the Ancient Mali language has been arranged.

As good 'thill, we hope to teach what we know to others and pass down such knowledge. We hope to lead by example, and spread the language amongst all pure mali.

The class is to be held on Malin's Welcome 24 S.A / 1820, 1730 at the library in The Amphitheatre in the square. This will be the first class that will be hosted by the Eternal College, and as such, is a special occasion. Mali of pure lineage are encouraged to attend, especially those who are mali’thill.

HAELUN’ORIAN STARS: ALMARIS. 

Recently, I have been able to pick up my studies with the newly built observatory within the Eternal College of Haelun’or. Written down below is a vast collection of individual stars, constellations, and their location and perceived meanings discovered through the years: 

Iheiuhii’Larihei ( Larihei’s call) : This constellation is shaped as a woman upholding a torch, symbolizing guiding the ‘aheral back home to elHaelun’or. One just needs to look upwards to the zenith of the sky to see this magnificent image. 

Igne (The Flame) : Considered the light to Larihei’s call, it serves as a sort of flame towards her torch, further guiding the ‘aheral back to the motherland.

Celia’thill (The Silver Star) : The constellation of celia’thill is held in the Northern Region of Karinah’siol. This particular shiny celia represents the progress which the high elves have made to becoming what everyone aspires to be.  Noticeably, this is the brightest, and by far largest star that can be seen from the Karinah’siol sky.

Indor’maparron (The Ancient Tome) : The ancient tome is the constellation that is seen in the eastern region of the sky. It takes the image of an open book, and represents high elven knowledge that has, and will be found in the light of Purity, as well as the pursuit of such.

Ibar (The Owl) : The Owl constellation is seen in the western region of the sky above Haelun’or. The owl represents purity and maehr’sae hiylun’ehya guiding one on the path of purity within their long lives.

Stag (Lost Translation) : A constellation in the southern view that is the smallest of the constellations that shows the national animal of Haelun’or, graceful and poised.

 Students are able specify which lessons they would like to focus on with their teachers or request private meetings to discuss progress, vocational opportunities or clarifying something they aren’t certain on. 
With every class comes a further degree of independence- as students can begin to work on their own. At the ethalane lin’hiylun, we offer further elective specialisations including: alchemy; becoming a combat medic and psychology.

If anything needs clarifying or you wish to enroll in the course, send a bird to arrange a meeting with the Okarir’hiylun (currently Laurir Maeve Elibar’acal) or the Tilruir’hiylun (currently Lorelei Miravaris).

Maehr’sae Hiylun’ehya
    Translating to ‘progress and health’ - these aspects are those every good clinic should strive towards. 
    Being the central way of living for mali’thill culture and embodying the clinic, it is only fitting as the introductory lesson to becoming a medic! The lesson includes how we uphold hiylun both in and out of the clinic, ensuring our legacy continues on: pure as ever. 

    Progress is the development of wisdom and knowledge for mali’thill. It is our duty to spread our knowledge, using our long lives to improve and arm ourselves with facts. By teaching new students or completing assignments such as going to the library - one is promoting progress. 

Ethos of the Clinic & Patient Pare
    Should include how to write up reports of patients, keeping track of what they’ve had. We should maintain professional performance, being confident whilst speaking - good bedside manner is imperative. Ensuring clinic staff meet the standards of training. The communication between patient and physicians is important: speaking accurately in a way that the patient can understand risks and the treatment. 

    Standards of the clinic is that it is a clean, safe environment with sterilized tools and bandages. It should be open and available all hours of the day. Essentially, physicians must respect their patients’ wishes unless in a very dire situation. 

Core Knowledge 
    Attending a class/classes on how to perform simple medical practices such as suturing, bandage replacement and wound aftercare. This will be the first step of any hands on practicing a student will do. All practices will be observed by a teacher and will be thoroughly taught beforehand. As suturing takes practice, students will learn on cadavers before going out into the field.

    Aftercare will also be a primary aspect of these classes as it is necessary to see treatment through to the end. Analyzing the healing processes of wounds and evaluating what course of treatment is still needed. These forms of care are essential and once these classes are concluded and the student is cleared, they may perform these tasks on their own. 

First Aid 
    Students will be taught how to properly diagnose and treat different illnesses and infections by observing signs and symptoms of the patient. Students will also be taught how to disinfect and treat cuts and burns in order to maintain the future health and healing process of the wounds. A special focus will be on that of burns. Burn wounds require special care and students will be instructed on how to treat and heal them in different ways, depending on the severity of the wound.

Core Knowledge II 
    In these classes, students will study the extent of head injuries and how they impact the patient. They will learn to come up with a treatment plan for such patients. Case studies will be used in order to help students understand a realistic approach to such treatments. 

    Broken bones, being one of the most common injuries, will be covered heavily in these classes. Students will be taught how to reset bone fractures and breaks and how to heal them. Upon conclusion of these classes, students will be able to practice under observation of a physician.

Physical Biology of Races
    Students will learn the differences between the physical biology of multiple races they are sure to treat over their years. This is to ensure they are ready for anyone to stumble into the clinic. Lessons will include the different attributes of each race, how those features are adapted for their respective functions and how, with these differences in mind, one should go about healing. 

Botany & Herbology
    In order to increase a hands on learning environment, the classes on Botany will mainly include independent studies and field trips in order to create a more realistic scenery. Herbs may be gathered in groups and students will be encouraged to go out and explore, recording their findings as well. 

    The creation of salves and herbal remedies will also be taught through hands-on activities. Classes on specific herbs will also be taught, including how to prepare the plants and even cooking classes on those which require a more detailed recipe.  

Pregnancy
    Students will be taught in detail the seriousness of pregnancy and how to properly diagnose pregnancy, as well as how to relay self-care for those who are pregnant. Prenatal examination procedures will be taught as well as postpartum care. 

    Midwifery will be covered, explaining how a child is born and the steps to take to ensure a healthy and safe delivery. The student must be observed during their first delivery and after such, they will be able to practice this freely.

Emergency Situations 
    Students will be taught how to differentiate the difference between arrows and the damage they have done to the victim they have impaled. Once the class(s) is concluded, a student should be able to remove any arrow through proper procedures, and treat the wound. 

    Student’s will also be taught how to properly treat stab wounds of different sizes and severities. Observing and calculating how severe the wound would be is an objective of the conclusion of the class and upon to conclusion, an apprentice should be able to freely practice these treatments under observation. 

Vocational Opportunities
    During their courses, should they choose so,  students will have the opportunity to visit and take lessons from trusted, foreign clinics, serving as a resident of such clinics for a short time. The clinic chosen will be vetted and observed in order to ensure a quality education. Should a student be interested, they shall meet with the Okarir’hiylun and Sohaer to be granted permission. 

Cadavers
    In order to understand the full extent of anatomy, students will be introduced to cadavers of different races, studying and practicing on such cadavers. This will allow for the students to optimize their understanding of the practices and treatments they will be performing. Student’s will be observed and taught the proper procedures of working with cadavers. This class will be taught to ensure confidence in students as well as provide a semi-realistic example of what they are working towards. 

Amputations
    To progress as an apprentice, students will be taught how to properly perform amputations in order to extend the knowledge an apprentice must know. The proper tools, techniques and treatment will be taught. Students will observe such a procedure before being observed doing one of their own. Once cleared after observation, the apprentices will be free to perform the procedure freely.

-= Elective Specialization: Combat Medicine =-

Sillumiran Training 

    Students will be required to join Elsillumiran (more specifically, the Walehir unit) and attend their training. It is essential a combat medic is a competent fighter. Apprentices will learn how to use all weapons, to cooperate in a group and general discipline. 

    When on the battlefield combat medics remain with Elsillumiran instead of the medic tents. It is here where students will learn to navigate the battlefield, working with, not against the armies they defend on the frontline, under the watchful eye of more experienced combat medics. 

Battle Triage
    ‘It is unethical for a physician to persist, at all costs, at maintaining the life of a patient beyond hope, thereby wasting to no avail scarce resources elsewhere.’

     These classes will include battle triage: why we do it, how to pick and choose between casualties based on a few factors further explained in lessons. It is the ever-crucial crux of being a medic in combat- selecting who, with limited supplies and time, you can help. Classes will include casualties acted out for the student to pick in which order they attend to. 

Moving a Body out of Danger
    Apprentices will learn the crucial part of how to approach a casualty, then evaluate how to get over to safety. These lessons should include evaluating the safest way to transport, and the different environments one might find themselves in. 

    Points students will touch on are: where is safest in a battlefield? How do you get there? What are the dangers with each method? In classes, we’ll try out some of these holds and stretcher movements with fellow apprentices or bystanders. 

Primary & secondary assessments
    This will be a lesson focusing on the two assessments one must do upon approaching a casualty in a conflict zone. This applies to general medical knowledge, only adapted to serve the function of limited space and energy in a battle. 

War experience & simulations 
    Likely to be the most fun part of the course. These can be simulated by clinic staff in the safety of elcihi. Or if such conflict is going on, an up-and-coming medic should attend all battles they can. 

    At first, apprentices stick by a more experienced soldier, soon branching out on their own. This will teach students how to navigate battlefields, picking out the casualties they need to treat as well as teaching firsthand how to balance all the wounded around them, whilst trying to get all of them back into immediate fighting shape.

-= Elective Specialization: Psychology =-

An added note on this term. Psychology is another tool for medics to use in order to better understand their patient. Even if they don’t wish to focus their medical career around mental hiylun this still stands. Psychology enables understanding of motives, emotions and the physical effects reflected in the patient’s health. It serves as a way for all mali’thilln to follow Maehr’sae Hiylun’ehya in seeking knowledge. 

There will be no test at the end of this term: performance and contribution to debates will have been noted throughout.

Memory
    Students will begin their psychology term with a few lessons on memory whereupon we will branch upon forgetfulness and how memories can be preserved. This aspect of psychology also includes how to deal with patients coming in with brain damage and memory loss. Apprentices will learn how to help them back to their former selves using triggers and methods.  

    With the progress of Maehr’sae Hiylun’ehya in mind, psychology is a perfect fit to continue stretching our knowledge and debating in issues still relevant to ethalane lin’hiylun. Look forward to debates such as: why do certain memories engrain themselves in our minds?

Social Influence & Upbringing
    To progress further in psychology, apprentices will learn how social influence and upbringing are major contributions to a person’s character. Students will discuss the mali’thill culture and expectations. We will spark debates regarding disobedience and wayward thinking, particularly in oem’iian. 

Relationships
    A fascinating subject to discuss: apprentices will learn about the different relationships and attachments individuals form for one another. Between parent and child, mali’thill courting, love and friendships. 

    Being very relevant to the everyday duties of clinic staff, apprentices will learn how to manage those acting rashly and lashing out when their loved one is hurt or in danger. 

Stress & Aggression
    Another segment of the fourth term is the physical and mental impact of stress. In learning these factors, apprentices can probe for the stem of their patient’s conflicts. They will employ knowledge and techniques to lessen such negative effects taking a toll on the patient. (As well as the best methods to go about removing an aggressor from a tense environment like the clinic).

    Again, the students may partake in discussions focusing around how stress might lead one to an early grave and whether aggression is ever justified.

How Does This Course Work?

    Every student should have lessons covering most, if not all, aspects of their term. They will be set reading a book to commit to memory, learn case studies and stories, as well as the actual practical skills and theory. 

    At the end of every term, there will either be a low-stakes practical or test, ensuring they’re capable medics thus far.

    One will be an apprentice when they have progressed to the third term and begin their semi-independent work and vocational opportunities within other clinics. They should write regular reports or schedule meetings with the Tilruir and Okarir to let them know what they’ve been getting up to. It is up to them to decide whether the apprentice is ready to become a fully fledged physician. 

    By the end of the third term their practical skills will already have been judged and they will have to take a test as usual- this time covering topics from across all terms. Apprentices can ask for aid with these questions among fellow students, physicians or visit the library.

The Eternal Library

As published on the 10th of Amber Cold, 1780

The Eternal Library continues to flourish under new leadership, regulations, and systems. With this new found growth, we need more Mali’thill to step forth as Mediiran’indor (Helpers of the book, also known as librarians). Thus, the Eternal Library will now be seeking new Mediiran’indor willing to donate their time and energy into continuing this new found growth and prosperity.

In order to become a Mediir’indor, the following requirements must be met:

• You must be a Mali’thill.
• You must be able to prove an understanding of reading and writing.
  • In order to prove this, you must submit a book of your own writing, or have a book already within the Eternal Library.
• You must be able to show patience, understanding, and respect inside and outside of the Eternal Library

If all of the requirements are able to be met, at the discretion of the Tilurir’indor you may be hired. After which you will be responsible for several duties outside and inside of the Eternal Library.

Mediir’indor Duties:

• Sort through library books for quality and acceptability, as well as find a proper location for said books within the Eternal Library.
• Sort through library copies and document how many copies we have of certain books.
• Look through the library books for inaccurate knowledge of facts in given sections
• Aid library guests in finding books, as well as obtaining library cards.
• Buy books from other nations, or the auction house

The Eternal Library

As published on the 15^th of The Amber Cold, 1776

Progress is the progeny of knowledge, and its pursuit is the fuel from which Mali’thill superiority burns. To abandon scientific progression would be to cast aside Maehr’sae Hiylun’ehya, to defile the excellence of our race, to revel in the hedonistic primitivity of our lessers. It is to avoid this end that Elheial’thilln has maintained the Eternal Library since Haelun’or’s youth. Though this facility is the greatest bastion of learning in the known world and is intended to service all Mali’thill, certain rules and precautions must be taken in order to ensure the protection of both its literary contents and material beauty. 

On Permissions

• Entrance into the Library is, at the relief of this missive, to be extended to all races and peoples of the world who have been vetted and allowed into Lareh’thilln.
  • Those wishing to temporarily withdraw a copy of one of the Library’s tomes, Mali’thill included, must obtain a library card. The process for obtaining a library card can be found in a separate bulletin.
  • The lending out and forgery of library cards is strictly forbidden, and will result in the offenders having their card access revoked.
  • Copies of books may be arranged for the price of one hundred minae a piece.
• Access to the restricted floor is reserved for the Okarir’maehr, Tilruir’indor, Maheral, and Sohaer. Others may receive temporary access at the behest of these parties.
  • Trespassing on this floor when one does not have access will result in punishment and the potential revoking of Library access.
• Going behind the reception desk is strictly prohibited for those unauthorized.

On Theft and Damages

• Theft or attempted theft is a criminal offense and will be punished accordingly. 
• Theft of library cards is considered theft of Library property, and as such, will be similarly punished.
• Unauthorized reproduction or plagiarism of the Library’s collections will result in the revocation of access, and, for legal purposes, is considered theft.
• Those with library cards that have failed to return their copy withdrawn are subject to a fine of twenty-five minae per Elven week late. 
  • If the fine exceeds one-hundred minae, the price of purchasing a copy directly, the copy may be kept by the offender upon paying the fine, and must pay all-owed even if exceeding one-hundred minae.
• Damage of any materials, be it to the building itself or the literature within, will result in a compensatory fine placed upon the offender. If the damage is deemed intentional, the act is considered criminal and will proceed to trial.

On Personal Conduct

• All scholars within the Library are expected to treat each other with the utmost politeness and respect.
• It is expected for scholars to wash their hands before reading, in order to prevent the dirtying of pages. Clean water bowls will be placed in the lobby for this purpose.
• Patience is a virtue well appreciated by the academic minded, and thus running is prohibited within the Library’s walls.
• Raucous speech is prohibited. Scholarly debate is welcomed, but keep a respectful tone and do not disturb your fellow academics.
• The Eternal Library reserves the right to punish offending scholars for any other matters deemed discourteous not specifically aforementioned.

The Eternal Library

As published on the 15^th of The Amber Cold, 1776

The iron doors finally have been ripped  from the entrance of the Eternal Library, allowing free knowledge to all those who enter elcihi'thilln. However, while the knowledge is free to be found within the libraries walls, in order to check out copies of the books a new system has been found. In this notice the process of the new library cards will be explained and the rules that it carries.

How to Receive a Library Card 

• One must donate a book(s) to the Eternal Library. This book may be their own writings, or the works of another. The book must not already be within the Eternal Library already. It must be understood that all books will be held to standard. If a book does not meet such a standard, it will not count towards receiving a library card. 
• It is important here to note that even if you have donated a book in the past, you will not be grandfathered in. A new book must be donated in order to receive a card. 
• Once you have donated a book, your name will be recorded. A library card will be made either on the spot, or you will be asked to come back another time to pick up the card. In the event you have been asked to come back, once the card is complete and stamped with a sigil, a letter will be sent out to inform you the card is complete.

Librarian Pins

• A librarian pin can be given to any who can prove they run a public library in another nation. This pin allows one to bypass the library cards need for donations of books.
• Someone who holds the librarian pin may request any book to be copied and used in their own public libraries. However, it should be emphasized that by requesting a pin they are in the understanding this shall work both ways, Meaning we may travel to their library and request copies of their books as well.
• A library pin can be denied for several reasons, all at the discretion of the  Tilurir’indor

Use of a Library Card

• A library card allows the owner to check out books from the library. It may be any book that is not a copy of a copy within the Eternal Library. However, when borrowing a book; it is borrowed. You will have one elven week to return the book. Failure to return a book on time will result in a fine of 25 mina for every elven week it is not returned. Read ‘ Library Fines’ for more information.
• Letters will be given out as a reminder to return your book, so do not let time slip!
• If you wish not to return a book, and instead keep a copy,  you may instead buy a copy of a book from the library for 100 mina, and not need to return it.

Library Fines

• If you are late at returning your book, you will be issued a library fine. The fine will start off at 25 mina fior the first missed week, raising by another 25 every elven week it is not returned.
• If you attempt to enter Haelun’or with an outstanding fee, you will be stopped. Either two things will happen;
  • If your fees are currently at less than 100 mina, you will be asked to return the book and pay the needed balance.
  • If your fees are above 100 mina, you will be asked to pay the balance; but need not return the book as you have paid for it with your fine.

Loss of Library Card or Librarian Pin

• If you have lost your librarian card or pin, you may request a new one. However, it will cost 50 mina. There will be no exceptions to the rules, so take great care of your library card or pin.

Revoking a Library Card or Librarian Pin

• Any library card or pin may be revoked at any time for any violation of the Eternal Library rules. The rules are located within the library, or a copy can be given by request by any librarian.
• If your card or pin has been revoked, it will be recorded. After some time, if you wish to attempt to receive a new card or pin, you must go through the elTilruir’indor.
