FORMATION OF THE GUARD

♜ On the Imperial Host of Man

Upholding safety and stability throughout the empire, the Reiksguard has consistently proven its worth whilst undergoing constant change, driven by the various ambitions of past Lord Marshals. Whether the conquest of foreign land, the keeping of law throughout the realm, or the everlasting fight against darker, more sinister forces. The military, no matter its structure, has remained a stable force through times of great adversity and constant warfare.

With the Empire now at peace however, the former Imperium Militarum shall now, both by name as well as structure, return to the name of Reiksguard, with newly thought-out reforms regarding hierarchy and mobility throughout the ranks. 

Offering both free housing to its members as well as pay, armor, and weaponry, the Reiksguard is to reach its goal of stability and prosperity. 

THE VALOR SYSTEM

The Valor System is the measure by which the Imperial Guard judges service, loyalty, and activity within its ranks. It is both reward and burden: Valor is earned through duty and sacrifice, yet may be lost through failure, neglect, or disobedience. It also wanes with time, ensuring that only those who remain active in service may hold standing within the Guard.

Valor is earned through acts of service to the Empire, both in war and in duty:

ON THE RANKS OF THE IMPERIAL GUARD

The army is built upon a foundation of clear order and noble purpose, each rank a step along the ladder of honor and service.

♟ Rekrut: 

A new member of the Imperial Guard, untested and unproven. Rekruts must earn Valor through service and complete formal training under an officer. Advancement beyond this rank requires completing 15 Valor. Upon reaching such standing, a Rekrut must swear an oath of fealty to the Emperor of Man, with an Adjudant or above present.

♟ Gardesoldaat: 

The backbone of the Imperial Guard. Having completed their training and sworn their oath, these soldiers stand ready to serve in all duties required of them, forming the steadfast core of the Guard. Advancement beyond this rank requires completing 100 Valor.

♟ Vaandrig: 

Among the most distinguished of the enlisted ranks, Vaandrigs bear the banners of the Empire. Drawn from a tradition of excellence hailing from the Legion of Burgundy, they possess an exceptional record of service and inspire all who serve beside them. Advancement beyond this rank requires completing 225 Valor.

♟ Korporaal: 

Seasoned soldiers proven across multiple battles. Reliable and experienced, Korporaals are veterans of past conflicts, many of whom serve the duration of their tenure in this rank, though some aspire to rise further. This is the highest honor an enlisted member may attain. In order to be promoted even further to the rank of Sergeant, one needs to reach 350 Valor and the approval of High Command.

♟ Sergeant: 

Though yet counted among the enlisted, Sergeants are elevated for their leadership, ambition, and initiative. They maintain discipline within the ranks and, in the absence of commissioned officers, assume direct command. For many, this station marks the first step toward a higher office. Advancement beyond this rank requires a recommendation from senior command.

ON THE JUNIOR OFFICERS OF THE ARMY

The command of the army is borne by officers, whose authority groweth with experience and merit, and who guide the host with both might and mind.

♞ Adjudant: 

The most junior of commissioned officers, chosen from the Sergeants for their courage, discipline, and leadership. Adjudanten are expected to lead men, host training exercises, and command smaller operations such as skirmishes and expeditions.

♞ Luitenant: 

Charged with executing the will of the High Command, Luitenants oversee operations and guide the Adjudanten beneath them. This rank is granted only to those Adjudanten who have shown consistent excellence, loyalty, and obedience.

♞ Dragon Knight: 

Champions appointed directly by the Emperor of Man. Though not subject to the Imperial Guard, they stand equal to a Luitenant in times of need and may assume command in crisis. They embody chivalric virtue and are charged with protecting their charge.

ON THE SENIOR OFFICERS OF COMMAND

The senior command of the army is raised by the militant leadership, who will take over the general, larger-scale day-to-day running, and wartime efforts, most of whom are in direct contact with higher government bodies such as the Privy Council to prepare for decisions that require summoning the royal host.

♝ Kapitein: 

Senior officers entrusted with oversight of operations, discipline, and the enforcement of imperial law. They ensure that all actions of the Guard remain lawful and honorable, and serve directly beneath the Lord Marshal.

♝ Grand Knight: 

A senior figure tasked with safeguarding the imperial family and mediating disputes between the Guard and the Dragon Knights. In times of necessity, they may assume command in joint operations where no Kapitein is present.

ON THE MASTER ROLES  

♜ Quartermaster:

A steward of war and keeper of the host’s lifeblood, the Quartermaster serves not with sword, but with scale and scroll. By the hand of the Quartermaster, provisions are weighed, arms distributed. Though often behind the line, this wisdom sustains the march as surely as steel wins the field.

♜ Master of Musters:
Warden of the ranks, the Master of Musters oversees all matters of recruitment. Keeping the lifeblood of the Guard sustained, ensuring a steady levy of men to fill the lines. As well, the master furnishes the Master Scribe and Quartermaster with names and records, that no sword be uncounted, nor contract unsigned.

MEDALS AND AWARDS

✷ Oak Crown

A metallic, golden crown of oaken leaves and two sprigs, connected behind the head. They resemble a crown of laurels. Awarded to those few who could be solely credited with saving the Empire, the Reiksguard, or winning a war. The highest battlefield honor a soldier may obtain. 

✷ Wings of Pertinax

Awarded to he who has shown the greatest sword skill in the army. This badge is composed of a winged helm overlaying a purple shield. Often given to tourney winners. 

✷ St. Arpad’s Mace

An ornate, flanged mace with inlays of gold. It is to be worn at the hip during ceremonies while doubling as a weapon should the need arise. Awarded after ten years of distinguished service. 

✷ Mark of Carolus

Awarded to those who can be credited with the first kill of any major battle. The badge depicts a burgundy shield with a dog standing on its hind legs.

✷ Hadrian’s Coin

Awarded to those who succeeded in their first battlefield conquest. The silver coin depicts Hadrian the Conqueror facing right on the obverse, with “Alea iacta est” below the head. The reverse depicts The Conqueror's coat of arms: a dragon beneath three skulls.

✷ Title of Conquest

Awarded to those who are persistent in success during wartime. Per the emperor's wishes and the marshal’s observations, a third name is officially bestowed upon you to be respected by all. Ten years of service is a prerequisite for this award.

ON THE SUPREME COMMAND

The highest military authority across the realm, hosting a seat in the privy council and undertaking the core roles of both a governor, a councillor, and a military leader.

︎ Lord Marshal of The Empire of Man (Reiksmarshal): 

The supreme commander of the Imperial Guard, appointed by the Emperor of Man. Holding ultimate authority over all matters of the Guard, the Lord Marshal governs its actions, commands its armies, and sits upon the Imperial Privy bearing the Black Staff of St. Charles of Petrus.

The Dragon Knight, ever sworn to his master, the Emperor of Man, is hereby given leave to muster additional levies from the countryside. The Legionary System is to be reformed to the Imperial Levy System: As the threats facing the Imperium know no boundaries or distinction, there is no longer a need for one amongst the Militarum.

✠ I: ON THE MATTER OF THE CROWNLANDS

The Imperial Crownlands shall be mustered in full by the Lord Marshal at any time, sending forth the Imperial Knights to do so.

Landed Knights of the Black Dragon are given leave to muster their own forces so long as they bear the Industrium’s Armor and Imperial Sigil; they may wear the colors of their fiefdom.

The position of Legate will hereby be a temporary title granted by the Emperor to a chosen Imperial Knight to restore order to a region when the Grand Knight or Lord Marshal is not present, exercised during a situation of duress. Auxiliary Legates within the Kingdoms of the Imperium (Norland, Idunia, Caurost) will still hold the same authority and task of mustering their men for war at the call of the Imperium’s Lord Marshal, Grand Knight, or Emperor.

Should an Internal War Charter be granted and a Knight’s Levy be involved, they are expected under penalty of death to don distinctive vestments; any man wearing the BURGUNDY or BORDEUX of the Imperial Rittersberg Levy is strictly prohibited from joining in such an arrangement.

All Magi without a writ of approval explicitly from the Lord Marshal, Grand Knight, or the Emperor are hereby to be slain within Imperial Crownlands.

EXTERMINATUS ORDER: BEASTMEN

The so-called Beastmen have been assessed through great examination by the Inquisitorious branch of the Imperium Militarum. These creatures, known commonly as Kha and Houzi, have been identified as a sub-branch of the Daemonic Beastmen found on the Trostine Border, specialized for purposes of invading the Holy Imperium. With orders from Daemonic masters to invade the Holy Imperium, the Beastmen have been designated targets of an Exterminatus Order.

Henceforth, unlicensed Kha and Houzi are to be exterminated on sight. A bounty of 10 mina per pelt has been placed upon their heads by the office of the Militus.

EXTERMINATUS ORDER: KHA

The Kha are a degenerate race of felin vermin often working as thieves or soldiers for their Daemonic masters. Kha are naturally stealthy and operate at night to attack the weak of the Imperium, preferring children and the elderly. The Kha’s natural enemy is the clever and wholesome Musin. The Kha is not to be trusted nor accepted within the Imperium. Exterminate.

EXTERMINATUS ORDER: HOUZI

The Houzi is a race of Conquering Maurauders from the Far Continent. These beasts have been seen associating with Daemonic Blood Rituals and sacrificing human children as bestial alters for their purposes of turning them into Kha. Houzi are often the Lieutenants of Daemon Lords and work to turn the weak and young into Beastmen to serve in their unholy armies, much in the same way as Daemons might attempt to alter a human into Daemon-Kin. The Houzi is not to be trusted or accepted within the Imperium. Exterminate.

On Procuring License

Should a Houzi or Kha show qualities worthy of mercy and proclaim the Citrine Creed before a priest of the True Faith or Inquisitorious Agent, they might procure a special license from a Knight Captain, Auxiliary Legate, or any higher authority. These are to be given on a mere case to case basis and might be revoked at any point. 

Knowingly aiding or abetting non-licensed Beastmen is a criminal offense punishable by execution.

THE VANDER LEGION

The Vander Legion, also known as the Second Legion, is expected to be the garrisoning force assigned to the Northern Sector of the Imperium. This legion possesses distinctive customs and attire that vary slightly from those of other Legions. The main cultural difference is the Vanderite Oath, which all soldiers of the Second Legion must take before integrating into the ranks of the Vander Legion.

† To obey those placed in authority.

† To guard the honour of fellow Vanders.

† To never turn one's back upon a foe.

TROSTINE HIERARCHY

The Vander Legion of Trost follows the same hierarchy within the Imperial Guard with minor nominal differences; a Vanderite Guardsman is referred to as a "Legionnaire," its leader, a "Legate." Due to the importance of the northern frontier, the Imperial Family is intended to have direct control over the region; rumors abound of a young child being raised specifically for this office.

TROSTINE STATION

The Trostine legion is to be stationed within the Northern Heartlands, although this jurisdiction and duty extend to all of the northern Imperium. The northern Imperium has been deemed the most dangerous subsection, and thus, the mortality rate of the Trostine Legion is expected to be far higher than that of the Capital Legion I. Because of this, the intake of Trost is quite high, and discharge due to mortal wounds is frequent.

The duty of a Trostine soldier might vary from labor within Trost, scouting missions, the construction or demolition of defensive structures, or, in the case of dissent, pacification.

TROSTINE DRESS

A legate should always bear the Trostine ‘Bordeaux’ (a shade of burgundy applied to the Second Legion. A legate should bear the standard equipment assigned to them as outlined within the Imperial Armament guide. A legate should always be equipped with their standard issue ‘Trostine’ cloak, a woolen cloak of ‘Bordeaux’ shade in case one must don such. Finally, a legate should always be equipped with their dress uniform, consisting of a ruffled collar and clean garments. These garments are dull in color but are always emblazoned with the Trostine sun.

THE VANDER CLOAK

The Vander Cloak is one of two legion-specific symbols that those assigned to the Vander Legion are given leave to wear as a symbol of their station. The cloak is a dull shade of burgundy called ‘Bordeaux’ and is distinctly non-royal; however, its similarity to the color spectrum lends credence to their loyalties to the Imperium and the Emperor.

THE TROSTINE COLLAR

Sometimes called ‘Ruffled Collars,” Trostine Collars are circular collars applied to garments as a form of status and posture. These collars are not worn in the field by the common soldier but are exclusively utilized within dress-uniform settings, such as presentations, parades, and other celebratory events. These collars mark active or formerly active service within Trost and the northern frontier.

DUTIES OF THE TROSTINE LEGION

The soldiers of Trost are entrusted with the vital duty of preventing chaos from infiltrating the Heartland of the Imperium. To fulfill this critical mission, the Legion is granted privileges beyond those of other Legions—notably in their distinctive dress. These Legionnaires accept a high mortality rate as an inherent part of their service, which ensures they remain one of the most well-supplied Legions within the Imperium. Despite the hardships, the Legionnaires of Trost execute their duties with resilience and unwavering resolve, bearing only what is necessary for their vital role.

Located on the Northern border, the Trostine Legion is a recruitment center for individuals of Northern non-Imperial origin and serves as a station to harden the more softly disposed. The legion holds the distinct honor of defending the Imperial Heartland's frontier against various threats. These threats include everything from common banditry upon the roads to invasions by undead hordes—or even worse. For this reason, Trost is known as one of, if not the most, perilous stations within the Imperial Guard.

Because of these dangers, the Trostine Legion is uniquely designed as a brotherhood, wherein each segment acts as a form of family. The Vander Legion is expected to swear the Vander Oath upon becoming a garrisoned footman and uphold the oath until death.

 

Notes: This is just one of many stations within the Imperial Guard; each is unique with its own quirks, benefits, and drawbacks. By no means does someone in the Second Legion have superiority over those in the Capital's First Legion; it is merely aesthetic!

✠ I: THE IMPERIAL BAN

By the order of the Justiciar, a formal BAN shall be placed upon foreign agents and former citizens which have been considered to have committed grievous crimes by the Office of the Justiciary.

Such a ban is as follows:

✢ Permanent exile from The Imperium and her states.

✢ Loss of property within The Imperium to be requisitioned by the state.

✢ Permanent bar from any form of trade or correspondence with the citizenry of The Imperium.

✠ II:   THE IMPERIAL BLACKLIST

Those banned from The Imperium are to be compiled into a blacklist by the Office of the Inquisition to be updated regularly for the purposes of upholding the law.

The Imperial Guard, Order of The Red Dragon, and Office of the Inquisition are expected to be up to date with the blacklist to enforce the exclusion of such criminals.

✠ III: INQUISITORIAL SUBDIVISION | ‘EXCLUSIONARIES’

The Office of the Inquisition is to form a subcommittee of Inquisitors to keep The Imperium’s Blacklist up to date as well as enforce said list. Exclusionsaries are expected to find and execute any deviants found within the borders of the Imperium.

✠ IV:  PETITION FOR REDRESS AND REMOVAL

Should an individual wish to petition for their name to be struck from The Imperial Ban, they may write to the Office of the Justiciar to explain their circumstances. Only The Lord Justiciar, or his Imperial Majesty, The Emperor, may approve of a lifting of such a ban.

Be it known to all good men and true: the Imperial Guard stand as the unyielding pillar and eternal aegis of the Empire of Man. Within its vaunted ranks dwell the finest sons of the realm—soldiers of iron will and peerless discipline—whose steadfast hearts shield mankind from the malice of Iblees and the ceaseless threats of mortal adversaries. This host, glorious and resolute, was not fashioned by fortune's whim, but born of the very essence of the Empire’s founding—an heirloom of battle, refined through loyalty, and tempered by the burden of vigilance.

The Empire, born in the fires of great tribulation, may not endure save through the ever-burning flame of watchfulness. Thus it is decreed: whosoever should take up the mantle of an Imperial Soldier must sign a contract of fealty to the Empire and Imperial Guard. From that solemn hour, he is bound to uphold Imperial Peace, to execute the Emperor’s will without hesitation, and to serve both as sentinel within the walls of civilisation and scourge to those who dare assail it from without.

Unlike its noble predecessor, the Royal Burgundian Army—born of necessity and conflict—the Imperial Guard was not summoned by calamity, but by vision.

In the fullness of his wisdom and sovereign will, His Imperial Majesty, Tiberius the First, first of that name and Founder of the Restored Empire of Man, beheld a future greater than any single kingdom might contain. No longer would His Majesty's host be a mere royal levy of Burgundy, but a force of empire: unified, exalted, and eternal.

By Imperial Decree, the honorable Ser Manfred von Berkhoven, First of the Marshal’s was raised to the honourable title of Reiksmarshal of the Empire, and under his command, the Royal Army was Elevated. Thus was born the Imperial Guard—a host not of haste and patchwork, but of order, discipline, and enduring strength.

Its soldiers, henceforth styled the Imperial Guard(Reiksguard), stand as the mailed fist of Imperial law, guardians of peace and justice throughout all the Emperor’s dominions. Side by side with the Imperial State Troops of the Empires vassals, they maintain the harmony of the realm, swift to answer the call of war, yet steadfast in the preservation of order.

ON THE RANKS OF THE IMPERIAL GUARD

♟ Freeman (Gefreiter): 

A volunteer in His Majesty’s service, armed and armored by the Crown. These men are expected to drill and train with fervor until such time as their worth is proven, and they may be elevated to the ranks of the full soldiery.

♟ Guardsman (Trabant):

The steadfast bulk of the army, having mastered the basic arts of war and discipline. They stand ready for most duties, so long as a guiding hand remaineth near.

♟ Young Guard (Jung Garde):

A veteran of tested mettle, skilled in campaign and garrison alike. Such a man is self-reliant and capable, able to resolve matters without need of command. From this rank, worthy men may be chosen to bear the mantle of officer.

♟ Forlorn Hope (Unternehmen):

First into the breach, and last to quit the field — thus is writ the cruel covenant of the Imperial Vanguard, the Forlorn Hope of The Empire. These are men once numbered amongst the proud Footmen of the Imperial Guard, hardened by the rigours of war. Few seek their company, for joy and mirth are strangers to their countenance. They speak not of idle fancies, nor dally in camply cheer — for theirs is a trade of thunder and fury, and their reward is survival, naught more.

♟ Old Guard (Alte Garde):

These are soldiers of unmatched loyalty and service, who have either declined the path of command or lived in days where none such were available. Though they are not knights, these men are revered as heroes of the realm, and may, if need be, stand in place of the Emperor’s own Guard. At this rank, special duties—scribes, runners, heralds—may also be assigned. In recognition of their honour, they are granted a personal sigil and a small farming estate, both reward and legacy.

ON THE JUNIOR OFFICERS OF THE ARMY

The command of the army is borne by officers, whose authority groweth with experience and merit, and who guide the host with both might and mind.

♞ Corporal (Korporal): 

The first of the officer class. These are men proven in duty and judgment, granted command o’er a troupe of three to five. They patrol, they guard, and they ensure order across the realm.

♞ Staff Officer (Stabsoffizier): 

Often drawn from the ranks of Corporals, these officers have talents not solely martial. They assist in administration and coordination, working closely with higher command, though they too may command troupes as needed.

ON THE SENIOR OFFICERS OF COMMAND

The senior command of the army is raised by militant leadership who will take over the general larger day-to-day runnings and wartime efforts, most being in direct contact with the higher government bodies such as the privy council in order to prepare for decisions that rely on summoning the royal host.

♝ Captain  (Hauptmann): 

This title is often borne by knights and seasoned commanders, for it demanded wisdom, leadership, and mastery of arms. These officers lead men in battle, orchestrate maneuvers, and oversee complex operations. They may command all troupes gathered by their own hand but may not summon the army in full without leave from the Lord Marshal. At times, they are also tasked with overseeing great labours—mining, land-clearing, or the provisioning of the host.

♝ Colonel (Oberst): 

Masters of warfare and stewards of the army’s soul. These officers may summon the army to arms without prior leave, and are entrusted with the training, development, and preservation of the host in times of peace and war. Appointment to this honour is conferred only with the consent of both His Majesty and the Lord Chancellor, or the Emperor himself.

ON THE MASTER ROLES

♜ Quartermaster (Quartiermeister):

A steward of war and keeper of the host’s lifeblood, the Quartermaster serves not with sword, but with scale and scroll. By the hand of the Quartermaster provisions are weighed, arms distributed. Though often behind the line, this wisdom sustains the march as surely as steel wins the field.

♜ Master Scribe (Meisterschreiber):

Bearer of quill and keeper of memory, the Master Scribe records the deeds of the Guard in ink. At the side of command, he transcribes the will of the Reiksmarshal and ensures that no order, honours or glories are missed.

♜ Master Herald (Meisterherold):

Both artist and orator, the Master Herald is chosen for mastery of brush and parchment. The Master is Entrusted the honour of repaying the army’s debt to its veterans—by crafting for them noble sigils and colours, that their deeds may be borne by their house and remembered through the ages.

♜ Master of Beasts (Meister der Bestien):

Keeper of hoof and horn, the Master of Beasts is steward to the Empire’s herds and steeds. The Master tendeth pastures, guardes the cattle, and ensure a steady bounty of mount, meat, and hide.

♜ Master of Musters  (Meister des Musterung):
Warden of the ranks, the Master of Musters oversees all matters of recruitment. Keeping the lifeblood of the Guard sustained, ensuring a steady levy of men to fill the lines. As well the master furnishes the Master Scribe and Quartermaster with names and records, that no sword be uncounted, nor contract unsigned.

ON THE SUPREME COMMAND

The highest military authority across the realm, hosting a seat in the privy council and undertaking the core roles of both a governor, councillor and military leader.

⚔︎ Marshal of The Empire of Man (Reiksmarshal): 

The singular commander of all The Empire of Man's forces, and the only soul empowered by the Emperor to summon the Provincial State Troops of the nation's vassals, in times of great peril. It is his solemn charge to maintain the army’s readiness, to keep it fed and armed, to oversee its training and discipline, and to ensure the Imperial State Troops of the realm are kept in strength and honour befitting the Crown.

A CALL TO HONOUR

To all who seek glory upon the field, to those who would shield the faithful and uphold the unity of mankind, let it be known: the Imperial Guard calls thee to arms. Make thyself known to any soldier of the Host, and thou shalt be brought before an officer.
