The Gryphon is a looming, large, and noble beast; once considered a fairy tale and nigh extinct. With the majority of its body resembling that of a lion from its paws, middle, and tail whilst the rest resemble that of an eagle. Its wingspan is large enough for the creature to fly, however, it is near impossible to ride such a creature; animalistic in nature it disdains those that try to mount it. On foot they possess somewhat double the might of the average lion, meaning they can put up a good fight; but they aren't impossible to kill or capture. In the air, they possess a grand speed, however, they aren't immune to an arrow's shot; piercing or clipping the wings can render them the inability to fly. These creatures are known to live for hundreds of years. The Gryphon can come in many colours, ranging from a grey body and a grey set of wings. However the most common appears as the picture above depicts. Nobody can really say where the Gryphon has originated from, they've always just been there hidden away.

Behavior:

Long before their almost extinction the Gryphon could be considered almost docile toward other creatures that it didn't hunt, rather, it would only attack the odd Dwarf that would dare try to strike the noble creature; often enough it would flee from the situation unless backed into a corner and unable to flee no more, less, of course, the Gryphon decided it could pluck a lone Dwarf off from its feet and back toward its nest. They weren't dense nor entirely animalistic. They were able to identify what wasn’t and what was a danger to themselves. However, the Gryphon can be considered extremely hostile toward anyone or anything that dare near its brood. However, after generations had passed since Iblees was trapped and sealed away, the new denizens of Athera having arrived, they slowly began to re-emerge out of curiosity; the offspring of the previous Gryphons that had fled sought more food, land, and better living space for their next generation to come. Depending upon the occasion and hostility of said person or creature the Gryphon will either be cautious,  flee, or attack with the intent of feasting on their flesh and bone. These beasts, however, have retained some of their previous attributes their their parents once had.

From birth onward:

The Gryphon can rarely ever reproduce considering their immense rarity it would be nigh rare to see two, especially a female and  a male together, however, if they do get together than an egg is born. A singular egg, to make up for their rarity, is as dense as stone on the outside and fragile on the inside, the egg is onyx in colour and when healthy it provides the occasional shudder. Upon hatching the Gryphon requires food rather immediately less it starves to death. The Gryphon is legitimately a troublesome creature to raise from childhood due to its explorative nature; years can pass and the Gryphon will begin to grow, getting bigger and bigger until it’s roughly the size of a looming Stallion Shire which can range from sixteen-twenty hands. Their wings, however, will continue to grow, signifying their age; a Gryphon’s wings will only cease to grow once they’ve reached the ripe old age of two hundred years old, generally meaning they’ve another fifty to go before they die of old age. Once reaching ten years of age the Gryphon will begin to learn how to fly, however, they do not master the ability until they’re twelve years of age; a Gryphon can be considered a full adult once they’ve reached thirty years of  age.

Habitat and diet:

The Gryphon used to nest wherever they could, roosting in looming trees and shoddy caves high into the mountains where their offspring could roam with only large creatures as their predators, even then the Gryphon was often left alone until their kin were almost wiped into near extinction from hunting, enslaving, and when they fled to foreign lands they were knocked back once again by creatures unknown; from there, the remaining Gryphons and their small number of offspring fled to the mountain side and almost never seen again. The Gryphon prefers the colder climate due to its thick set of feathers and fur, however, it can make do in the warmer albeit for a short time. Gryphon’s tend to feast on whatever meat they’re given or capture, ranging from rabbit to bird; even the odd corpse of a human, orc, elf, or dwarf if hungry and daring enough. The offspring, having been taught how to hunt from an early age onward tend to hunt small critters and the occasional bird. However their main diet would be fish and will make use of any available food source.

What is known:

Not much can be said for the Gryphon other than the occasional knight or person engraving it into their armour, shield, or banner. However, tales do exist. Fairy tales, at least. Brief descriptions regarding a large, monstrous creature with the head of an eagle, body of a lion, and wings outstretched far and wide, capable of toppling trees with a single beat of their humongous wings. Beasts so grand and noble, yet a terrifying match. A creature sought by many yet found by the very rare few. These creatures are too rare to be found by normal means, they're either letting themselves be found, or the odd person would have to be extremely lucky. However, such lore could be considered a fool's nonsense or an old man's babbling.

What else?:

The Gryphon is purely an event creature to which I do plan on devising and fulfilling a set amount of events for the Gryphon’s which in the end could lead to their extinction or furthering on the lands of Athera and several locations will be created for their nests for the playerbase to come across and discover. However, I do implore that brief knowledge isn’t drafted in regarding the Gryphon and a lot of the information regarding the fantasy-esque creatures will be presented during events. I will also be doing the odd Gryphon event here  and there, wherever I see it fit to keep the rarity of these creatures up. However, in the rare event an egg or two can either be found or distributed the player will have the chance to raise said creature albeit it will not become their pet nor can it be tamed. The remainder will be left up to the RP and to how it goes. Only a dozen or two dozen remain in the lands of Athera with roughly five to six eggs sitting in either their nests or hidden away.

This one is a rough example of what the aged and worn Gryphon's can look like although they do keep their two front legs and talons with their two hind legs and the main section of a lion.
