Diatone Magic A.K.A Bard Magic or Music Magic

Spoiler

On the subject of what Diatone Magic falls under such as arcane, deity, or dark magic,  is a rather complex question. It would be more suitable for this Magic to have its own group, also because if a character is to learn this magic and master it, they cannot learn any other form of Magic. But I will put this up for the Magic Team to decide (if this gets implemented as lore) because they are the experts. If it must fit in a already CANON category, that it would most likely fall under Arcane Magic

I.                     What is the basis of Music RP and Magic

Spoiler

First off, it must be pointed out how I have role played Music within Lord of the Craft, for the art of music RP is not a very popular role to take on. My Character, Zyriphyr, a 600 year old Mali’aheral, who has been playing the Violin and other instruments in the entirety of his life. A truly gifted/artistic elf indeed. I created a Religion (not bound by lore because it is the beliefs of my characters) known to some as Diatonism. The reason it exists, is to represent spiritual and musical theory explanations to Music in Lord of the Craft (I am not an expert, but I actually study Music Theory OOC, and play multiple instruments).

The Religion:

This is a brief explanation of Diatonism, and what is necessary to know about music. First the Seven Voices:

Ion: The First Child of the Void. Unknown alignment of voice to any Aengudaemon. Color: White and represents the power of light and healing.

Dori: The Second Child of the Void. Believed that many daemons speak through this Voice. Color: Green and represents the power of confusion

Phyrigi: The Third Child of the Void. Believed that Metzli, daemon creator of the Khajit, speaks through this voice. Color: Purple and represents the power of Mind Control

Lydi: The Fourth Child of the Void. Believed to represent Xan’s voice and many other Aengul. Color: Yellow and represents the power of shielding.

Mixolydi: The Fifth Child of the Void. The Dominant Voice. Believed to be the Voice used by the Fallen one Iblees. Color: Red and represents power destructive energy.

Aeol: The Sixth Child of the Void. Believed to be the voice of Aerial. Color: Blue and represents the power of striking down a opponent

Locri: The Last Child of the Void. The Black God. Represents all that was, and all that wasn’t. Color: Black and represents the power of soul manipulation and immortality.

Each Voice is a scale (real life scales are Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian.) It is believed that each Voice is actually a representation of one God like creation of the Void. The religion states that each Voice represents many different Aengudaemon, but are in fact just different personalities or forms of the voice (like Brahma in Hinduism). This means there are only shapeless Entities of the Void, and two different aengudaemons could actually by two different faces of the same coin, or so it is believed.

All scales are formed by 12 different tones or notes, and can be played in different keys of pitches of scales.

The point of this religion/philosophy in Diatone Magic is not for the Musician to gain his/her magical ability through a “deity,” but to actually understand Music in a way that can be used within Magic. This may sound a bit complex, especially for roleplay, but it is not, and can be just as efficient as any other form of Magic on this Server.

Before we get into the specifics, a “Bard” with the training and magical “ability” can use his understanding of the Diatonism Teachings of Music, to use Magic through their instrument (in the simplest terms, the next chapters will discuss exactly what this magic is.)

II.                   How is Magic Brought into Music: Aura, Mana, the Void, and the Soul and  MUSIC SCALES!

Spoiler

It needs to be made CLEAR that the most important part of this Magic, is actually first having the ability to play an instrument and understand Diatonism’s teachings. This means no one can go to a Diatone Magic teacher unless they have completed 10 years rp practice of one the Three Main Instruments of Diatone Magic, and understand the teachings of Diatonism’s Music Theory.

Magic is brought into the music by one’s understanding of their soul. The soul of the player is the single most important idea when Music meets Magic. With ones understanding of their soul, they can manipulate the structure of their Aura and energy use of their Mana, and connect to the Void through the sound that they make with their Instrument. But this is when Diatonism’s teachings come into play. Diatonism is split into 7 different scales, the 7th one be the most complicated and powerful for multiple reasons that shall be explained further down the page. When a Magical Bard is in full connection with his/her Soul and can “hear” the void (the connection between their realm and the void is quite important), they can play certain melodies and songs by Instrument (and can add their own voice for more powerful effect), manipulating their Aura into performing the magical spell or affect that the bard is trying to achieve. Because the void is actually being heard by the Musician in their head, they can easily become mad, have no recollection of who they are and lose all musical abilities. This means this Magic is quite dangerous, and will not work with everyone, especially the weak minded. The Mana Pool of the Bard also affects how long a Bard can play with a magical effect

Another point that needs to be made, is that when a Magical Bard becomes more proficient, and learn more complicated spells, they begin absorb energy from the void, molding into their Aura to be played on their instrument and be cast upon their target. This means, that every time the soul of a Musician performs a form of a spell that uses a lot force or energy on its target, the soul of the Musician is slowly being ripped into the void. This is a gradual process, but it will always mean certain death to the Bard if he/she continuously uses extremely powerful spells. The most powerful spell that could ever be used (mentioned in the Chapter VIII) would kill any powerful musician immediately after casting such a spell (If this was to be used, it Perma Kill the Character who learned those abilities.)

A restatement of this chapter: After achieving Music ability and proper knowledge, a Musician can connect their Soul to the void, and manipulate their Aura through their Instrument, performing magical spells.

III.                 Process Towards Learning and Mastering

Spoiler

As stated before, a musician who wants to use magic with their craft must complete ten years of Instrument study, and learn the teachings of Diatonism. Once they have completed this task, they are not even half way to mastering this Art. A student of Diatonic Magic, must first learn that this magic exists, and then find a teacher of Magic (whom doesn’t necessarily have to be a Diatone User) or a written copy of the Diatonic Grimoire of Spells. The reason why a Musician can use another Non-Diatone Magic User (primarily Arcane Masters who are actual teachers of their own Magic), is because if the Teacher has knowledge of the Aura and the Void, they can slowly guide a Diatone student into learning how to practice this magic. But in this scenario, the non-Diatone Magic Teacher must have a copy of the Diatonic Grimoire of Spells. Once learning their connection to the Void, whether its self-taught (extremely dangerous and will most likely lead to death or insanity,) or taught by an actually Diatone User or other Arcane Teacher, the Student can understand the ways of Music and Magic, bidding their time to hard independent study. These studies require actual demonstrations, and tests on other humans to actually see whether the Diatone Student knows what he/she is doing, and then can find the road leading to Master hood of this art.

IV.                Beginner Level: Spells

Spoiler

Beginners, after learning their connection to the void, may begin to perform simple musical spells from a spell book and test them. These spells will be written pieces of music that contain poems that must be recited by the Bard. At this point, a diatonic Bard does not know how to only use his instrument to manipulate his aura.

V.                  Proficient Bard Level: Strength in Their Playing

Spoiler

A bard who has memorized most of the beginner level spells may begin to attempt more difficult pieces of magical music. This is the stage where a Bard will practice not using their voice to sing a melodic spell, and instead try to use the scales from Diatonism to express the spell itself. The reason why beginners use voice at first, is because the voice is in direct conversation with the soul of the Bard. But to connect soul to instrument is an arduous task. Once they can learn how to perform spells without singing, a bard is actually suitable for combat scenarios, because it allows them to perform harder more powerful spells and move around at the same time.

VI.                Master Bard Level: Improvisation

Spoiler

A very complex and dangerous level of power. A Master bard knows all spells written in the Diatonic Grimoire of Spells, and can shred through any of the Diatonism Scales. You know a Diatone Bard master when they can perfectly improvise music, creating a entirely new spell at that moment. This is a very complex idea for RP, but I have broken it down with my Diatonism religion.

Each scale represents a different force of power. This is a reason why the written spells in the Diatonic Grimoire of Spells have certain scales that being used. For example, the Mixolydi scale or other wise known as the Iblees scale, is a very powerful, dominant force of magic. Mixolydi scales generally are used for destructive elements such as to send a blast of fire into a target or send a force of energy to blow a target of its feet (similar to Fus Roh Dah). It must be known that these scales only have names of certain aengudaemons based off the religion, but aren’t deity connected magic.

In Diatonism, each scale represents a voice of a Aengudaemonic figure. So it is believed that Iblees, and multiple other Aengudaemons speak through the scale tones of the Mixolydi scale, which is a dominant scale (AP Music Theory for you) and because of this dominance, the magic manipulated by this scale is to be destructive. The Locri Scale (the most powerful scale and can only be used in magic by Masters) represents unity of all beings, and also the non-unity of all beings. In philosophy it represents all time and no time, all Daemons and Aenguls, and no Daemons and Aenguls. It is called the Black God Scale, as it is the combination of all colors. Some people believe it is the scale of the Creator itself. The Locri Scale, if performed properly can reincarnate a dead body. A extremely powerful master can even tear pieces of a target’s Aura and soul, rendering them useless to magic abilities, but still functioning. This power is of course really threatening and some of you may think it OP, but if a Master bard is to use those special abilities, they would rip their own soul as well, leaving them useless to magic or more likely die. This is why some people may categorize Diatone Magic as Dark Magic. But the Ion Scale can be used to create light in darkness and heal souls like a monk. Once a master understands each scales power, the can improvise a solo that can do a series of magic attacks and defense spells. But the solo can be very overpowering on the Master, making him completely defenseless and horribly weak after the solo, and may again rip his soul killing himself. So it’s not advised to perform these spells and OOC should be performed only by really good Role-players who understand what is too much to make RP enjoyable.

VII.               Virtuoso Level: For EVENT TEAM SITUATIONS ONLY

Spoiler

For Event Team purposes if they want to sacrifice a Master Bard in an amazing way to somehow defend the Realm in a small battle, the Master Bard can use the Whole Tone Scale to solo, ripping his/her soul and aura completely into the void, perma killing himself instantly, but also damaging everything around him/her (not killing everything but saving the day!)

This is just a fun Idea for the Event Team, but doesn’t need to be implemented at all.

VIII.             The Diatonic Grimoire of Spells

Spoiler

If the lore is implemented, I will take the time to create entire short poems for each spell, and perhaps actual notations. But because this takes so much of my time, I will not write the lyrics of these spells in till/if this Lore gets accepted. If people want to help write lyrics EVEN BETTER! If any spells should be added or taken away, reply to this topic.

Beginner Spells:

Ion Scale: Heal a Small  Wound.

Ion Scale: Create a small light in the dark for a minute.

Dori Scale: Confuse targets mind (makes the target for a couple minutes unaware of his/her surroundings

Lydi: Create a small shield of protection from Aura

Proficient:

Aeol Scale:

Shoot an arrow of energy through Aura causing harm to opponent

Mixolydi Scale: Cast a ball of fire at target. Adding voice to this Spell increases size of flame.

Phyrigi Scale: Conjure an illusion of a being or animal, and control the image with the melody. (Think of a patronus charm, but with ability to imagine the illusion from your mind.)

Master

Master Solo Improvisations:

Ion: Healing Ones Self or Ally

Dor: Blind Attacker Through Confusion of Sound

Phyrigi: (Not during battle, only used in completely silent situations) Mind control for 20 Elven Minutes, character must constantly play scale to keep the mind under its influence. Very harmful on the Bard, and can only be used once every Elven week.

Lydi: Generate Aura Shield (doesn’t Protect Instrument)

Mixolydi: Send Blasts of Fire and Energy For Destruction

Aeol: Conjure invisible sharp objects to fly at opponent and cut them.

Locri: Damage targets soul (damages your own musical ability so bad Idea to use unless this is the case. Must be agreed upon between role-players if to be used. Otherwise is it is powergaming.)

IX.                 The Three Instruments

Spoiler

To think you can use a Grand Piano with this magic is a misconception. To manipulate your Aura with your instrument, your body must be standing, and you must be hold the Instrument, so that your aura can completely surround your instrument. The three instruments of Choice are the Lute (use a shovel), a Violin (also use a shovel, or even bone), or a Flute (Arrow or Stick). These instruments cannot be enchanted to be more powerful. “the magic is not the instrument, but the Instrumentalist” If it is a badly constructed instrument, it can wear and tear easily, rendering the Bard without their instrument to cast spells. If an instrument is broken in anyway, it must be replaced to continue using the magic.

X.                   Pro’s and Con’s: Strengths and Weaknesses

Spoiler

Pros: This Magic creates a very unique roleplay, and encourages many people to become more than “just a musician” and encourage Music RP a lot.

The powers and abilities that can be achieved are very exciting and useful for more magic rp, making the Bard a different experience.

A Master Bard can become very powerful with their magic

Cons: You MUST practice your instrument for ten in-game years (no musician is truly great in less than that time, so it would be unrealistic to allow them to practice Magic,( but again encourages Music RP).

The Magic can be very dangerous and may perma kill your character or damage their mind.

Becoming a Master is quite powerful, but if you use to many abilities you will rip your soul and perma kill your character. (To prevent powergaming, its unrealistic to really use the very powerful attacks, and should only be put in good Role playing hands.)

It again takes effort to become a bard, and you will need to understand the concept of Diatonism.

If Anything interrupts a spell, the spell is broken. This could be by a loud bang, a force harming the Bard while not using a shield spell, or someone breaking the instrument.

Note: Shield Spells can protect the Bard, but the Aura shield will not defend the Instrument. This means a instrument can be destroyed by the opponent, if roleplayed properly, and will render the Bard magically useless.

Mastering Diatone magic will also prevent you from being handy with bows, swords, or any hand to hand weapons. You will also not be able to be Master in another magic, and can only be adept in one other different type of Magic. This is because of the amount of effort put into practicing your instrument and than the Magical spells will make you in capable. To truly become a powerful Bard, you will need more than fifty years of experience, possibly one hundred, making Bardmanship Magic not very useful for humans that don’t live quite long.

XI.                 History

Spoiler

Majority of the history of Music and Diatonism in generaly lays within the religious text of the Diatonists.  It is said that the first mortal to discover the power of the Seven Scales and connection to the Void was a Dwarf flutist of the name Urmos Bloodstan in the Land of Aegis, hundreds of years before the return of Iblees. He had be introduced to musical training as young boy, and it was during one of his mediations that he felt something odd. No, he heard something odd. It is believed that he opened his soul to the voices of the Void. He immediately broke his silence by picking up his flute and playing the first thing that came to his mind. All of sudden a flash of light appeared before him. He had no understanding of what it was, perhaps a god, perhaps he was mad. It was when he played another note that the light disappeared Slowly, Bloodstan began to realize that there more to power of music than what you would generally hear. He began to ask fellow professors if they knew of anything he had just felt. The professors just laughed at the young dwarf, calling him a mad musician. Yet Bloodstan felt quite connected to the experience he had, and began to further study Diatonism. Eventually he realized that on command he could play certain notes In certain patterns, and be able to feel a connection to the void. He began to preach to other communities, especially to the elven musicians, about the effects that the seven scales could have. But they all still ridiculed him, calling him now “The Mad Monk of Music.”

From then on it seems that the history of both Diatonism and the power of the Seven Scales disappeared. It wasn’t the five races reached the Isles of Vailor, that the magic was revealed again to the public. A middle aged Mali’aheral, known as the Zyriphyr, had come across an old book of his fathers titled “The Diatonic Grimoire of Spells.” As a young elf, His father had forced Zyriphyr into a spiritual diatonic cult called the “Order of the Locrian.” These cultists were musicians and mages who believe that to achieve immortality, one must understand the 7 voices of the void, achieve enlightenment, and unify with the universe, joining the Voice of Locri. For 500 hundred years of practicing to no ends his Violin, and teaching Diatonistic lessons to musicians, Zyriphyr had no clue that the spell book he was holding was written by the Mad Monk of Music and that apparently Bloodstan was friend of his father Zoryphus. Zyriphyr opened the spell book, and began to read the contents of the worn pages. He called some of his close friends to take a look at the book, and they realized that they must take this to a Mage at once.

XII.               How Will It Be Implemented

Spoiler

This is a new Magic that should be introduced gradually. I was thinking, with the permission of the Lore Team, and Magic Team (if this is accepted), that my character Zyriphyr and a couple others who are intrigued and want to participate in this journey, would go out to find an Arcane teacher and let him guide us through the understanding of the Void and Mana, eventually allowing us to be proficient and teach others the way of Diatonic Magic. The other possibility is hiding copies of this book all around Vailor (which I don’t think would be efficient.) I am trying to instigate music RP to be on the level of interest of Magic Rp, this is why I created such a lore, and believe it would be a great addition to Lord of the Craft.

Well...

Not to say that this isn't quite the lore to expect but, there are a few sections in which this new magic would be kinda problematic.

Ion Scale: Heal a Small  Wound.

1 hour ago, SebastianA500 said:

Ion: Healing Ones Self or Ally

I've checked before with a few staff members and they've all said one cannot use the void to directly heal themselves or any others.

1 hour ago, SebastianA500 said:

Ion Scale: Create a small light in the dark for a minute.

This is way too close to using Tahariae clerical magic, light illusion(I believe?), and fire evocation. What'd make it so different from just learning any or those that have already come up with the idea?

1 hour ago, SebastianA500 said:

Dori Scale: Confuse targets mind (makes the target for a couple minutes unaware of his/her surroundings

You can already create illusions that do such with either mental magic/ illusion.

1 hour ago, SebastianA500 said:

Lydi: Create a small shield of protection from Aura

1 hour ago, SebastianA500 said:

Lydi: Generate Aura Shield (doesn’t Protect Instrument)

Aeol: Conjure invisible sharp objects to fly at opponent and cut them.

You wouldn't necessarily need to shield from aura unless it's from a shade. And if you need a shield or projectiles that aren't natural elements that come from the void, you have Arcanism! Also, the part with sharp, invisible objects does sound quite overpowering, does it not?

1 hour ago, SebastianA500 said:

Locri: Damage targets soul (damages your own musical ability so bad Idea to use unless this is the case. Must be agreed upon between role-players if to be used. Otherwise is it is powergaming.)

Damaging one's soul? I've never heard of music or magic for that matter that can directly harm one's soul. Besides, it's quite overpowering to use in roleplay, just think: How would the person being targetted have rp'ed this through?

1 hour ago, SebastianA500 said:

Phyrigi: (Not during battle, only used in completely silent situations) Mind control for 20 Elven Minutes, character must constantly play scale to keep the mind under its influence. Very harmful on the Bard, and can only be used once every Elven week.

Not even with mental magic is one allowed to do this. Even if it is harmful, the farthest it should go is enough to influence a person to do something, not forcing them because it's wrong and not fair for the one being targetted.

2 hours ago, SebastianA500 said:

Mixolydi Scale: Cast a ball of fire at target. Adding voice to this Spell increases size of flame.

Again, one can do this with the use of fire evocation, what makes this so special?

There's way too many weaknesses that a person would have to rp out when using this.

All in all, I'd just go over it again and make some major edits or just not do it. Not to bring you down on the idea of having musical magic in rp, but I personally just don't see how someone can enjoy using this in rp, or anyone else that it's being used on. But still like how you're trying! :)

Not very good before I'm going to even talk about balancing fix your format. Then realize the lms doesn't want something that can be done by other lore, namely illusion.

I just re-wrote a entire edit to this about two hours ago, changing the spells and lore of the magic, answering to the problems pointed out to  the replies to this topic. Than I on accident pressed cancel. Because of that stupid mistake, I am not going to re-write it. I am a bit stressed. I apologize for the forum use. LORE MASTERS you can deny this one because I'm done. My apologies. I am really sorry.
