Structure law and Disintegration Magic (Revamp)

Inception

As a novice researcher under an internship in the wizard’s guild headed by Ambros, Beltran had to submit a research paper in order to reach the ranks of his fellow wizards. Drawing inspiration from unified magic theory which serves as the driving force behind alteration, he strove to understand the very nature of mana present in objects.

Beltran, through his gross rapport for gambling had mastered the use of cards indulged himself in the art of card stacking. Creating ornamental structures through the balance of cards. Beltran noted in his rare moments of frustration, that the collapse of the pyramid expelled cards in a flashy manner. Thus, he theorized; ifs every objects were made of mana, was mana structured in an organized fashion much like the scattered mess of playing cards in front of him?

Through conversations with fellow wizards and Alterationists, he theorized that if objects were made of ‘molecules’ per say, these molecules must have bonds with each other to stop them dissipating, like air or gas. It is this same reason that him and his fellow Telekinetics were unable to grasp men or liquid, due to the fluctuating nature of their mana. Putting two and two together, Beltran underwent extreme experimentation and finally wrote his paper, to be submitted to his superiors and qualify for his PhD.

Introduction

Magic along the likes of translocation, telekinesis, transfiguration, have always had its restrictions. From being unable to manipulate liquid to our inability to warp animals into the void, we have simply accepted it as it is, without asking ‘why’.

Preface

Through experimentation as well as research, I have developed a comprehensive theory that our understanding and manipulation of mana on a subconscious level, is through Structure Law.

Structure law explains that all acts of magic is through our configuration and manipulation of magic ‘molecules’. Voidal theory explains that everything is made of mana, thus allowing alteration to happen. In the same vein, Evocationists evoke by creating objects via mana. Structure law theorizes that evoked substance as well as existing objects posses a certain structure of molecules, unified through bonds which determine its physical properties.

Through Structure Theory, we may eventually understand void magic as never before.

Terms:

Unified Magic Theory: The Theory that All Objects are made Of Mana

Law of Creation: Something Cannot be Created by Nothing

Justification

Unified magic theory explains that everything is made of mana, hence the Evocationist's ability to evoke. By drawing molecules/voidal energy from the void, Evocationists are able to create substances through reforming the structure of these molecules, hence explaining the familiarity the caster must have with it’s chosen evocation before being able to cast.  In the same way, Voidal Translocation draws upon the Law of Creation in which the user actively deconstructs the object’s molecules and placing it into the void. In both cases, the caster must familiarize themselves with the structure of the molecules and emulate them through either recreating the chosen effect with their own mana (Evocationist) or recombining the existing, broken down molecules by manipulating it (Voidal translocationists)

Perhaps, the most staggering evidence to Structure Law is the alteration branch, transfiguration. Transfiguration employs the use of the Law of Transformation, where one object must retain its mass in order to be employed. This changing of nature of an object through extensive study must be a physical transformation, i.e, a change in structure.  Through Structure theory, it can be theorized that Transfigurationists actively manipulate the bonds between each molecule to have his/her desired outcome.

Our inability to manipulate the living and liquid does not stem from fluctuating mana, but from fluctuating structure of such mana. The Transfigurationist cannot manipulate the living or liquid as he does not have a constant mana point as he cannot keep track of the internal structure at all times. The Translocationist cannot translocate the living or liquid as such structure is fluctuating and too complex for the human brain. Telekinetics are unable for the same reasons.

Voidal translocation and transfiguration.

Our current understanding of how Voidal translocation works is that the caster must remember the composition of the object in order to draw it back into reality. These molecules exist in the void and are only composed back in the real world through the caster’s understanding of the object. In the same way, transfigurationists instead of breaking molecules apart, warp the structure of an object through their own use mana. By weakening the bonds of iron, they can effectively turn iron into a liquid-like form.

Both are concrete evidence that Structure Law does indeed take place.

Evocation and Arcanism

As said before under justification, Evocationists are able to evoke through the Law of Creation. The Law of Creation explains that we cannot create matter from nothing and must come from somewhere. The Evocationist in this case must understand the very subject of which they are attempting to evoke, much like the Void Translocationists before drawing molecules from the void.  By understanding said structure, Evocationist form bonds via their own mana so that these molecules can emulate the substance. These bonds however depend on the mana pool of the Evocationist and must be maintained. As such, the translocated object remains in the real world independent of the caster while the evoked entity dissipates.

Arcanism, like Evocationists draw mana from the void. However, if we were to follow along Structure Law, Arcanist do not form structures with said molecules and thus needs no familiarization with the evoked material. They instead shoot mana particles bonded in a simple shape, such as a bolt.

Arcane shielding, art as well as Weaponary are all different levels of application of Structure law. Through forming bonds between generic particles, the Arcanist can produce complex structures with varying amounts of durability. While Arcane Shielding has the simplest form,  it’s uniform structure allows it to withstand blows. As the degree of complexity of which Arcanist weave said bonds, durability lessens as more structural weak points can be discovered.

However, this is only a theory as I have not yet conferred with arcanists and may yet pose to be false.

The Davre Field

The Davre Field is a theory that when drawing upon the void, the caster creates a field of magical particles that will then be shaped into whatever.

Unified Voidal Theory explains that the humans is made of mana as well, albeit a fluctuating category different from the voidal mana we draw upon. The Davre Field is in short, a field of charged particles not yet given shape. Magic users call upon the void and produce a Davre field which the user can then shape through creating bonds [See Evocation and Arcanism].

However, when one draws upon the void and creates this field, these particles revolve around a person fluctuates in and out of the person like magnetic waves. This energy and movement causes the field to affect our inner residual mana and will lead to detrimental effect. A side effect of these charged particles is light and can be let off in Aura.

When one starts out as a novice and creates such a field, this sudden influx of particles directly affects the person, hence vomiting and headaches. However, over time, these effects start to lessen and the person in question develops a resistance.

Conclusion

Structure law explains the very nature of magic and explains our limitations and why voidal magic works. With application of structure law, we can see that every magic is linked together in some way and is more simpler than we think it is. With the discovery of Structure Law, new doors will open regarding the nature of the void. Below is one such experimental example.

P

Voidal Disintegration

(Proposed Void Magic Theory)

Below is an approximation of the process used.

The Process

Voidal Disintegration is the manipulation of Mana within an object. With all objects made of mana, it is through this connection that Alterationists are able to manipulate objects to such an extent. Considered a subcategory, Disintegration Magic instead interferes  and disrupts the bonds of Mana as determined by Structure Law, which holds the object together. In such a case, many peculiar effects upon the object can be recreated.

Much like Voidal Translocation, Disintegration Magic deals with the raw nature of the Void. By channeling Mana through the object, this gathered influx of energy overrides the bonds previously maintained. As such, the object will break apart under such stress placed upon it. This collapse of the vessel results in the implosion of the object in the direction of the ‘push’, and as such, a shockwave expelled in every direction.

You can liken Disintegration magic as the finger in a long line of dominos. By simply interfering with the mana structure of an object in such a way as to collapse the whole object, the domino effect achieved results in the Disintegration of the object as well as a shock wave in the direction of the collapse. Different materials have different mana structures, dependant on their complexity, malleability and size. By simply knocking out a block of this carefully stacked tower of mana, the object will implode depending on how much mana you use. However, in order to do so, extensive knowledge and familiarity of the object must be established in order to conserve mana.

All objects have a particular mana structure which determines the hardness, density and all physical properties of the object. By using mana to directly influence with these bonds, a domino effect can be achieved, resulting in the destruction of the object. It can be said that the user is the catalyst to the mixture, which can be likened to the object itself. As such, Disintegration magic cannot affect living things due to the fluctuating structure of the being. It is only through disrupting the rigidness of such an object, can the effect be achieved through its collapse.

So where does the mana of the object go? The collapse of the mana structure, the breaking of mana bonds within a structure is dispelled outwords. Energy needs somewhere to go, and through the easiest channel. The resulting expulsion of mana hence is dispelled outwards, riding the direction of the incursion. This excess mana thus results in a shockwave, concussive energy felt in the real world and dissipating in the air shortly after. However, also likened to an explosion, there would be a significant recoil and extensive use may hurt, or even damage the caster.

‘For any reaction, there is an equal but opposite reaction.’

Contact

The rate of this Disintegration depends on several factors. The focal point is the most important. With such volatile energy, it is necessary to herd it directly in the object, hence the first factor. Contact. Physical contact is recommended in order to gauge the amount of mana energy needed as well as a direction factor. The degree of which the material is felt directly corresponds to the rate and amount of material which can be interacted. Hence, the more skin contact you have with the subject, the faster and more efficient the process However, those of a high degree of mastery and familiarity with the subject may achieve the same rate with less contact and even no contact at all.

The amount of mana used to disrupt this structure affects the degree of the reaction. Though a simple tap of the object’s mana formation is mandatory to achieve a reaction. The time it takes to spread throughout the whole object takes time. It is through the use of more mana would the rate of Disintegration increase, thus the more energy released over a short period of time.

If a piece of wood has a mana structure akin to it being made of cardboard, a diamond would have one akin to being made of iron. The harder the initial ‘kick’, the faster the rate of deterioration as well as the rate of which it dispels energy over x amount of time.

The process of utilizing Disintegration is much like any other branch of magic, Voidal Translocation however is its closest semblance. In the way that it directly manipulates the mana of an object. Unlike most forms of magic, Disintegration magic does not need visual contact to necessarily work, needing only a physical confirmation of the object. However, seeing the object can help in gauging the amount of mana needed to incur such a reaction if the caster has a wealth of experience through experimentation.

Visual signifiers:

When depositing mana as a ‘catalyst’, this energy is stored within the item itself and erodes at a rate determined by the density of the item. Harder items need more mana and need more time in order to be fully collapsed. Hence, a diamond would need much more mana than a simple piece of wood and would take more time to collapse unless the catalyzing mana makes up for it. During this process of disintegration, the object in question would dispel energy in the form of light as a side effects as the item’s bonds collapse before it’s obvious conclusion. This light is extremely hampering for the caster as the person can distance himself form the object before it implodes.

Projectile

Casters with extremely high mana pools as well as extensive mastery over Voidal Disintegration are able to produce a bolt of pure mana. However, conjuring such a bolt is extremely taxing on the Caster as well and requires extreme concentration As the bolt travels through the air, mana dissipates and is reabsorbed into the air, thus the user must gather exponentially more mana than when using it conventionally. The mana at the end, contacting the object in question is substantially smaller than when it was first cast, taxing the user even more.

This bolt serves the same purpose as the catalyst and a big enough bolt would inspire such a reaction from the object.

Having physical contact with the object in question is necessary to gauge the amount of magic and to properly control the reaction. The projectile however is variable and lacks the fine tuning which comes with physical contact and casting such a projectile may not even cause the object to disintegrate. Casting at length, in short, is an unreliable method.

Role Play Examples:

Combat

The bandit approaches Beltran, his swagger exaggerated as his rusty armor comes to light.

Beltran tenses his muscles, his brow furrowing as his eyes focus on the target. His arms would tremble as he begins gather energy.

The bandit continues his clanking steps, before suddenly stepping into a charge. His iron form sprinting towards Beltran despite the heavy plates.

Beltran centres himself, his right knee shivering as he focus mana into his palms, gauging the amount of mana as he focuses on the bandit’s breastplate.

With a shout, the bandit launches himself at Beltran, ready for an easy picking, or so he thought.

With a grunt, Beltran slams his arm on the bandit’s breastplate, narrowly avoiding the sword. The breastplate would emit a green light as it’s mana structure starts to collapse. Cussing, the bandit hurriedly attempts to remove his breastplate as the minute pass by, but to no avail. The light sniffs out,the chestplate explodes in a shower of steel splinters.

As the air expands, it throws both Beltran and the bandit away from each other, one punctured with fragments of metal, the mage, sprawling on the ground.

Beltran coughs, his knees shuddering from the effort, his head spinning as he limps along his way.

Non Combat

Beltran nears the boulder,  his focal points on the tips of his right forefinger. With a shallow breath of air, he taps the clammy surface with his fingertip. His knuckles would whiten as power courses through his fingers into the rock. Slowly, the boulder will tremble, successively more violently with each passing second. With a final shiver, the Boulder would shatter, a small amount of dirt furrowing in the air as the blast digs slightly into the earth. Beltran’s arm rocks in his socket as the backlash hits him, pain lashing in his arm as his vision warps. Driven onto his knees, he coughs and holds his arm in pain.

Guidelines

Pros

-Element of surprise, new magics are always fun to use.

-Destructive shockwaves! Explosions!

- Once the object is triggered by the casters mana, the process of collapsing will continue even if the item in question is out of sight.

Cons

-Very easy to interfere with a caster, as the caster must be focused on the material ‘on hand’.

-Physical Weakness.

-Immense amounts of mana is needed.

-Explosions may injure the caster due to shrapnel

-Explosions cannot be controlled.

- If the caster is holding the object in question, the residual shockwave will damage tissue.

-Can’t disintegrate living objects due to fluctuating auras.

- Projectiles are slow, taxing and requires much more mana.

Red lines:

-The amount of mana needed depends on the hardness/complexity of the material and size of the object.

-The explosion caused by the Disintegration cannot be controlled.

-Huge casting signals. The object in question would glow brighter and brighter until it implodes.

-Shockwaves depend on the amount of mana invested in an object.

-No casting on organic material, as alteration cannot affect such already.

-Implosion of object does not create fire or heat.

-The projectile cannot be controlled, as such, no long range transfiguration.

Looks kinda cool, the disintigration part! :)

Even though this is probably going to get denied for now because of the whole "no new magic" rule, I like it and think it should be accepted when the door opens again. c:

Except I'm not a part of the whole mage scene, so I don't know how well this would work.

But! +1

I like it. Very well written.

As long as the theories remain theories, looks pretty neat - trying to make the ideas written here canon would make magic unnecessarily hard to RP, seeing as now, alteration would require some rather serious knowledge. I think much of this is already possible with alteration, but perhaps this could simply serve as the documenting of that phenomenon?

First off, I sincerely dislike lores attempting to canonize highly indepth theories about magic... Doing such will only lead to the dampening of creative freedom for the individual. If it's not about practicality, and not necessarily needed, it should be avoided entirely.

As for disintegration magic itself. Everything you described is possible with transfiguration. You are able to overflow an object with mana and doing such will result in it literally exploding... And certain objects can carry more mana than others, such as carbarum. I would say that magic lore isn't being accepted currently, but there would be no reason to accept this as it's already a thing. On top of that, I see you mentioned alteration cannot effect liquids. It can. For example, a transfigurationist could freeze water.

I'm sorry, but I cannot reasonably support any of this.

No new magics are being accepted, regardless, I disagree with this lore because:

I am of the belief that this new way of doing things will inspire, more than hamper. Even if this is seen as a restriction, true creativity will seek to work past it.
