“Hae’mel, Hae’mel of Smoeni. Yaiv, bless your Oemm, and take us to Viv’alets.”

-An Ancient Smoeni prayer

A Brief Overview

The Smoeni are a trading tribe, who originate from within the deep and hot forests. They deal in items from fur to ores, to gems and jewelry. The Smoeni’s History is shrouded in mystery to outsiders, not even being revealed to the children of the tribe until their thirteenth birthdays, to ensure they wouldn’t give out the past and weaknesses of their sisters. The giants are comprised of mostly women, a male Smoeni being extremely rare to see outside of the homeland.

History

Smoeni are a diverse group, the time they were officially formed lost to time. The creation itself is told in two ways, the story of the Goddess, and the true formation. The story being taught to the children of the tribe from thirteen and up- with the true story forgotten and burned.

The True Formation

Many years ago, there was a group of four half-orcish women. Each abused and tortured, due to their whitewash birth. The largest of them all was named Tumash, her orcish heritage much more prominent than the other runaways. Tumash was displeased with the other’s lack of confidence, and urge to fight, she took temporary role as a leader of the four, taking a firm charge. The second was the brains of the operations, and who was harmed more physically during the events of her young life, which stunted her growth. Olirel, she was the one who planned out each move- so that they would not be found by the few who followed the Orcish beliefs. It was through careful planning, that she led them to an unoccupied area. The third, Atizar was the most important. She was the only non part ‘Ker of the four, herself being of wood elven blood. The fourth and final, was the most distant part Orc, her appearance more of a Maliker, she was known as Minilmia.

The four constantly moved, mostly because of the paranoia they would be found. Atizar, one night fell deprived of sleep, and had drank too much the night prior. It was that night when she slept, that she had a dream- or a ‘vision’. A great beautiful goddess, with seven large cat heads. The so called goddess went by the name Kesag, and offered the group protection, for a price. The price was a male heart every three years, at the end of each harvest. Atizar promptly declined, the ‘vision’ quickly fading from her mind.

Atizar shared the story with her companions, each letting out a laugh and a shake of the head, continuing on with their day. But Minilmia, she had other plans. She knew that something was off with the ordeal, not believing it to simply be an alcohol induced dream. Minil left in the night, making sure to reach one of the elven settlements. There she met another ‘Ker, a tall and handsome male. A perfect test, to see if the so called goddess was truly looking out for the unformed and unnamed Smoeni. Minli lured the man out back towards her homeland, successfully seducing him along the trip. The next parts of the story are unknown, although judging by current cultural beliefs, her plan went through.

Each sister continued to thrive, and bore children. It was around this time when several outsiders joined the growing tribe. This sparked a golden age, within the Smoeni. Which lasted until the first of the sister’s death, when Tumash fell in battle to a band of thieves.

The Story

“The Goddess Kesag, was once one of the many gods in the skies. No one knows where our goddess comes from, although she speaks to me through visions. She is a beautiful woman, with bronzed skin, and has the heads of seven giant cats. Kesag told me the story of how she was casted out, and how it was by her own brother. She began to feed on the lives of male descendants, the most power being able to be pulled from the hearts of fools. She continued to do this through her own hands, until she found myself. It was then that she gave me a blessing, and revealed herself to me. I was deemed priestess, and sent forward to continue the line of our people. She offered gifts to us, for the heart of males every three years. Long life, a plentiful harvest, fertility, and beauty; these are the blessings she gave to the me and my sisters. She blessed us each with a power, a power only given to us and our pure family lines. Myself, the gift of hearing her voice and commands, I am unaware if my daughter will hear her words after my demise, but it is Kesag’s words that she will become priestess next. Minilmia, fertility and beauty. The blessings to create the mothers of our tribe. Olirel, who was given wisdom, and the ability to create a language for our sisters. And finally, the recently deceased Tumash, who was given strength, and bravery. We know that we will all perish, and will return to be with Tumash. Our lives are not as expanded as we wished, nor as long as our parents. But this, Kesag has granted us a place in her realm. A place named Viv’altes, where only the pure Aven will go once deceased. She had forbade us from burying the fallen Aven and Reti together, as it will contaminate the soul and send the woman to Al’delva. A place where the reti will go once they meet their demise..

We are welcoming newcomers into our home, whom bring in offerings- as in slaves. Olirel has dubbed them ‘Akeytie’, as a form of keeping a subtle speech when out in the open world, that is not in our encampment. We have been named by the Goddess, as the four Champions, and have earned ourselves titles that will be carried on throughout the ages. We will be called as: Atizar the Savior, Olirel the Wise, Tumash the Conqueror, and Minilmia the Tricky. It is still unknown to me why these are our chosen names, but we will wear them with pride.. ”

-Translated from Atizar’s personal journal

Appearances

Smoeni come in an array of colors, the few born to the four original Champions have unique appearances, from heights to general coloring. Each will be listed below, as well as their family color and tattoos.

Atizar

The family of Priests

አዳኝ

Those that descend from Atizar tend to be smaller Smoeni, not standing anywhere near the height of one of Tumash’s offspring. They tend to have lighter skin tones, with a soft bronze hue. Generally, they tend to have brighter eye colors- normally green or blue, yet this still varies. They tend to be fairly muscular, but only range in heights 5’5 to 6’.

Tumash

The Family of Warriors

ድል አድራጊው

Tumash had an early demise, only bearing one daughter. This began the limit of Tumash’s successors. They are by far the largest of the tribe, exceeding up to seven feet in height. If they do become overly large, they do have the risk at getting several genetic diseases- also causing an early demise. The larger, the more pain they feel in their muscles, making it a strong weakness.

Religion

To the Smoeni, religion is one of the most important act in their daily lives, which is  shown in their many festivals that they have. The religion itself is unnamed, and it’s complexity calls for it to be placed into several different categories.

Kesag

The Smoeni follow a false goddess known to be Kesag. Kesag is thought of to have the heads of seven big cats, them being as listed: Lion, Tiger, Leopard, Lynx, Cougar, Jaguar, and Cheetah. She is believed to feed on the flesh of males- but the heart having a more favorable taste, which is why she gives blessings to those who feed her. To most Smoeni, they would give their life for the false goddess, and would very easily lose their temper if found she was disrespected.

The  Aggid

Smoeni have many festivals, although the Aggid is by far one of the most important. Aggid’s are held at no specific date, but are normally used for introducing newborns and new Smoeni into the tribe, as rite of passage. The event is also used to give trials to the born Smoeni of the tribe, and formally make them a Smoeni.

Sacrifices

Every three years, it is tradition that the Smoeni offer the goddess Kesag sacrifices. For many years, this was done through days of torture and kidnapping. Despite these traditions lasting lives, they have been changed throughout the decades. It has evolved into something far less barbaric, and something where said male is punished by law. The male used is usually one who has broken Smoeni law, and it is normally one of great importance, i.e. Murder, Assault, etc.

Afterlife

Smoeni belief in three places that they go to when death approaches. The first, Viv’altes, is a type of ‘heaven’ for females alone, and is seen as the highest of the three. The second, is a place where males are sent, the ‘second class’ heaven called Al’delva. Despite this, some Smoeni believe if they do something wrong- they are sent here. And the third, is a place seen where those who defy Kesag go in death. Min’vakrn, is said to be a place filled with fire, where souls are tortured by the seven cats.

It is another belief that if Kesag remains unpleased, that the souls from each afterlife return on a singular night, and kill the current Priestess, or the one who was supposed to be priestess.

Clothing

tumblr_my9ov1bTZJ1rehix5o1_500.jpg

Traditionally, Smoeni wore very revealing clothing, simply due to the fact of where their climate was extremely hot. Now, because of their habits of moving around, Smoeni tend to wear slightly more covering clothing- but still remain ready for warm weather. Their wardrobe is comprised of very bright outfits, normally worn with headdresses, headbands, and many other types of jewelry.

For males, they are also clothed in items such as the women of the tribe, minus the more elegant styles- and brighter headdresses. They tend to wear more face paints than their sisters, and have more tattoos which tend to show their rank within the group.

Hierarchy

The hierarchy system within the Smoeni is much different than outside civilizations. In older times, Smoeni women were known for killing their brothers without rest, having a sworn hate on the other sex. After much change, and the fall of many leaders- it was now changed into a much more ‘free age’. Smoeni females still hold a higher rank than males, but they are no longer killed- but are instead treated as lessers, denying them rights to own land, have a rank, and to fight. Males are instead used for more mundane jobs, such as watching the home, and teaching the children more simple jobs. Older Smoeni women have grown bitter to this, and tend to not be as open to this freedom than those born in the age.

Smoeni are lead by a Council of Four, also called the Senutir. The Senutir is comprised of women from each main family. Each woman has a general job, them being;

Chief of Trade

Chief of Housing

Chief of Slaves

Chief of Kesag

The bloodline does not matter in choosing the next rank, but the ‘Chief of Kesag’ or Priestess, will always come from Atizar’s bloodline.

Marriage and Courtship

Marriage and different-sex courtship is a very new concept to the Smoeni, it only being brought back into their culture by outsiders. Many of the older women of the tribe look down on this act, and only see it as a way for males to get a higher ranking within the tribe.

Marriage is normally only used for procreation, and rarely has to do with other things.

The priestess, or one of the Seuntir, do the wedding- offering a prayer to Kesag so that their children will be strong, and beautiful.

Female marriage is allowed, and has been the longer type of courtship that has existed within the Smoeni.

Slavery

Slavery has, and will more than likely forever remain tradition within the tribe. Although, like many other things, it has changed and evolved with time. Originally, only males would be enslaved, and if born from the tribe- they would be born into slavery. Current slave keeping, is normally outsiders, or tribe mates- who have broken law.

Trading for slaves is also common, in this case, keeping ‘innocent’ slaves is completely legal. This form of slavery is the more common, and the stock tend to be used as sacrifices to Kesag.

Ideals and Relationships

Smoeni born into the tribe all have their own ideas, and thoughts about outsiders. Many things differ with age, older Smoeni having different thoughts about things than what younger Smoeni may think.

Kha

In the early days of the Smoeni, Kharajyr were looked down upon and often hunted for their pelts. However; in more recent times, there have been diplomatic efforts made by both Kharajyr and Smoeni, leading to a more relaxed attitude. In addition, the Smoeni were offered unlimited use of Canahedo, the Kharajyr land, as a gesture of friendship.

Males

Like Kha, many of the older Smoeni women have a special place for the opposite sex. They are stuck with the belief that they should be dead, and rotting in Al’delva, than allowed to live with women of the tribe. Instead, males are now allowed to live alongside the rest of the Smoeni- but normally have a different living space, for obvious reasons.

Outsiders

For decades, outsiders have, and always are welcome within the Smoen Tribe. Whether it be for trade, or the simple idea that the two can live in peace.

Trade

Trade culture is a very important thing to the Smoeni- as it is a way for them to import information, and goods, into the tribe home. Normally, they export items such as: Furs, weapons, jewelry, and homemade cuisine. They are seen commonly hauling wagons of their goods, only using animals if needed.

Language

xcb9krGCoA1nxNINgJXz2dNlrzrk3ZRXMfq7EYH8NA5czGDckry7qCeHYED54-gUweyzn9iKW-JDteZF-M9sxNUwo6qej5FqEr0rhD9rFWHxQHfyuTRxmQcKXEwhf10T7WHf8pJv

The Smoeni have been disconnected from the outside world for uncountable years, this is why they developed their own written language- and bits of their  own language. They tend to have a very thick accent, resembling the Navajo. Several common words said are as read,

Karug- Greetings

Van’ye- Farewell

Ahernug- Thanks

Smoenii- Tribe Sister

Retdev- Tribe Brother

Eloz- Kha

Ologri- Friend, Companion

Laws

Laws are very important to the Smoeni, most regarding the Goddess and her followers.

  1. Attacking, or killing an innocent tribe mate will result in public lashings, as well as enslavement for the remainder of said criminals lifespan.

  2. If a slave harms, or attempts to harm any tribe member, they get lashings with the removal of a finger for each occurrence. If they are serving out a crime, their sentence is prolonged.

  3. Thievery, or banditing, is punishable by two months to a year of Akeytie work, depending on how much was stolen.

  4. Interrupting during a sacrifice, protesting against it, or causing any unneeded disturbance while the preparing, is blasphemy. If a Smoenii or Retdev interrupts, they will be casted out of the tribal home for up to a year- depending on how severe the interruption is. If an outsider does this, they will be removed from the site.

  5. Worshiping, or praising another god or goddess is heresy, and the Smoeni will be punished on the Senutir’s digression. The only exception being the Goddess Metztli.

  6. Keeping cats as pets is illegal, as cats are holy figures. Kesag has decreed that they are to be worshiped, as if her own children. If found one is doing this, they will be given back to Kesag- as a sacrifice.

  7. Females and male Smoeni are not to be buried in the same place, to the olden belief they go to a separate afterlife.

Changelog

  • Smoeni hierarchy has been changed significantly, the reason being that the RP happening was dull and repetitive. This will allow new players to play a Smoeni.
  • Clothing, less skimpy, and more practical. It makes more sense if they are traveling traders to have more covering clothing, to combat the climate.
  • Some religious things have been added and removed.
  • The History is expanded, and in two different teachings.

Red lines

  • The larger a Smoeni is, the more muscle pain they would feel. This prevents someone from making a giant 7'7 monster who could not feel any pain.
  • They do not live as long as elves, more than likely living up to 500-600, although the oldest current Smoeni is mid 100's.
  • If a player wishes to play a Smoeni, they must ask for permission first.

Addition,

If your character is a Smoeni, and leaves the Smoeni without getting banished, they will be hunted and killed by their previous family. We do not ask for an instant PK, but it would be preferred if it continues to happen.
