The Astral Dimension

“In the past when the stars aligned the planet was besieged by nightmarish creatures brought forth from foreign realms, infernal and decrepit were their lipid bodies, insoluble to the most base of mortal magics and sunlight. It moves in cycles, this convergence of planes, the more active tampering there is within a given location the more wide-ranged its effects.”

-- Codex of Monk Tirelius, Astrophysicist and Bungling Artificer

Explanation

The dislocation of entire realms is no laughing matter; fear that which you can’t understand.

The vacuum thought to be space is in actuality the source of incoming objects from external planes, intrepid objects that fly into the world bathed in energies from beyond. All things entering from afar tend to come from the deeper recesses of space, a place where time has no meaning and conventional laws have no hold. There are two kinds of planes separated by either their abstinence or accordance with natural law.

Static worlds were the first created when the universe first came to fruition. As the name suggests, these worlds rarely ever change, they are compact reservoirs conceived by the collusion of energies beyond the Veil. In the scarce chance that the world itself does change, it does so to accustom the will of its masters, the plane itself encompasses the Void and all AenguDaemonic realms in the cosmos. Dynamic planes however are far more complicated given their ever-changing nature, they are dense globes consisting of earthy material shed from static worlds. The concept of reality here is strong, laws are binding and all agents within it struggle to help maintain its equilibrium, besides its clear adherence to logic and binding agents the worlds are very diverse and scattered. Through the efforts of otherworldly forces, these planets are capable of sustaining life long-term, after all it was through their efforts that life originally came to be.

Although these terms are clearly very consistent and easy to grasp, there are many other things beyond considered far more baffling, ulterior realms that are muddled and far-flung. All realms have a residual spark of energy from its initial conception, a spark defining its balance and all of its doings, but when that spark withers so does the realm it resides in. The death of a world can be attributed to mass loss of life, overuse of natural resources, and fleeting energy that travels into external planes. Dying realms often join together to form clusters of dead and decaying worlds, trying in vain to salvage their resources by melding with living planes to sustain themselves, this is where the line between reality and superstition blurs. Abnormal haunts arise, locations once found elsewhere reappear in merged worlds, as do mirages and strange happenings. Singularities do commence, the world reels in response due to its loss of control so that nature grows disjointed, uncharted even. An aged explorer who’s gone the same route for forty years could walk his common path and end up lost, caught in a seemingly perpetual haze as he tries to locate his home to no avail. This strange event where world fragments synchronize with a living realm is called a convergence.

Diction

Static Planes: do not change without the direct influence of a deity, spirit, or other kind of controller. Static planes predate dynamic planes due to them being conceived at the beginning of all creation. Realms within this kind of plane are defined as being energy centric, they do not conform to natural laws, these worlds are confined to limbo when not interacted with. Time does not exist in these kinds of locations, when they meld with mortal, or “dynamic” planes, a Harmonic Convergence will begin.

Dynamic Planes: Ever-changing regardless of external variables, dense chunks of rock enveloping an energized core originating from static planes. Dynamic worlds are defined by an abundance of life and warmth, things that static planes lack due to their paradoxes and abstractness.

Harmonic Convergence: The melding of a static plane with a dynamic plane, this produces mirages and strange happenings that bend reality in a myriad of different ways. These fickle circumstances are produced by the energies of these two realities twining and altering the present reality to accustom it. Time grows bent, almost nonexistent, some semblance of a dying world clearly visible.

“Dying” World: A dying world is devoid of interaction between objects, all forces that help maintain equilibrium in the world end and unlike static planes which are immortal, they contain no energy. A dying world has many similarities with static planes despite the lack of energy, they do not change in the slightest over time without melding with another world, plane, or dimension.

Mirage: A mirage is defined as being illusory but in this case it is truly the bending of reality to strengthen the connection between different planes. A positive mirage can be an adventurous and confusing voyage, a negative one can enthrall you and forever haunt you with memories of instability and true fear. All mirages are different to the beholder, and despite similarities in these foreign environments, the mortal mind is hardly capable of processing the full extent of its effects.

Solstice: During natural events mirages can occur. These occurrences are measured by the realms they interact with at the height of the realm’s instability, this leaves the world rife with the potential to commune briefly with a deific plane. It is during this time that a select site can blend with a god’s realm and ensure a temporary connection, this process is not seamless however, the instability of this kind of connection leaves the location vulnerable to foreigners, meaning the territory can be ruined or destroyed aggravating the deity or spirit responsible for its caretaking.

Event Potential

Forgotten Realms- Ed Greenwood

I feel this lore piece could do well in event making for the following reasons.

  • It is dynamic and allows for a wide-range of occurrences to transpire, mundane or otherwise. This sort of twilight zone interaction can aid in character development and create a sense of mystery around the workings of the universe.

  • It now gives stargazing a purpose that makes sense, people can watch the skies to try and perceive whether or not a solstice or convergence will occur. By interacting with the stars or spirits somebody can find out when one of these events will happen.

  • Due to the broadness of the topic at hand nearly anything can happen. The Astral Dimension itself is a plane of absent space that exists between worlds, it is essentially the outer space of LoTC.

  • The effects of the lore besides basic outlines are vague on purpose. Events caused by these are up to the discretion of the actor or lore team member who runs the event as long as none of the rules and terms in this lore article are breached.

There is no extraterrestrial life except for lifeforms located in other realms that require accepted lore, such as Voidal Horrors from beyond the Veil.

Thank you for submitting your piece! It is now under review and a verdict will be given in roughly a week.

This lore has been reviewed and the team felt it was rather convoluted and remains vague in terms of what is possible. While it is appreciated that you tried to leave it as broad as possible for the sake of events, leaving things in such a manner where almost anything is possible while connections can be made to deific realms and other such things causes it to be open to issues. This lore has been denied.
