Notice: WE KNOW THERE’S ALREADY AN ET RACE CALLED THE AXOL-SOMETHINGS.

We just want Fish People and we’ve worked hard on this. The following lore has been developed by a small team of dedicated LOTC players who want to bring a lot of color to the server.

The Kala Ihmiset

Before you stands what seems to be an anthropomorphic fish, he seems graceful with his motions.

Afar from shore, many miles is what seems to be a city underwater. You’d think nobody would have noticed it sooner, well I guess nobody cared to just look down. For many years, the Kala Ihmiset have slowly developed their society. The Kala have their own beliefs for how they got there. These fish believe in what they call a “Holy Family”, led by their goddess Thyatira and her mate Agathocles. The entire society is based and revolves around this belief, as it is the very breath of these people. Their city is modeled after an octopus, and is filled with many shades of blue, and many iridescent colors. Everything looked clean and sleek as if it was sculpted by Thyatira’s own hand.

Credit to the AMAZING Artist. Just Google 'Underwater City of Mosk' This will be what our city will be like.

Appearance

Notice - The Kala Ihmiset has broad examples of appearance. Our designs were based on actual fish.

The 3 LINK GIFs below are just crude examples of diversity.

Artwork Coming Soon.

Two-Colored Male||Lower Tail

Teal Female||No Tail, Enlarged Fins

Yellow Female||Upper Tail

While some professional artwork is coming, each category has something in common. Fins or a Tail. While color is wide, there is limits. One cannot look like a member of the Holy Family (Explained Later). Therefore, a Kala cannot be completely black, completely white, completely silver, or completely gold. (You'll find that this relates to how no Kha can look like Metztli). Males are known to have longer fins. But keep in mind, until a Kala chooses their primary gender... They are gender neutral and have no distinction of gender. Body characteristics show both genders until one chooses a primary gender.

APPARENTLY, I CAN ONLY UPLOAD IMAGES SMALLER THAN 81 KB. MY IMAGES ARE ONLY 15 KB.

((I will edit them in later.))

Government/Social Structure

Since the outing of Agathocles’s rage, Thyatira’s hold on her house was even more strict. This boiled down to the governmental system of the Kala Ihmiset

The Kala Ihmiset are run by a form of matriarchy. What is “Matriarchy”? This form of ruling is a society in which the females are held high. It’s a social organization in which the bloodline of the female is more important than the bloodline of the male. An example being Thyatira herself; she was a mother who ruled her family with an iron fin. Another example would a queen, who held more power than a king. Mothers are known for being the neck that turns the head. Queens and princesses are the most powerful citizen, they rule their colony but are obligated to listen to the high priests for guidance.  The queen and/or princess are the oldest female within the colony. When the queen dies without a female heir, the high priests will search around the lower ranks to find the oldest female which they can find. The newly found female would be the new queen.

Priests are the highest ranks of citizens in the colonies, they usually work by themselves with a handful of warriors which they choose. The closest thing that this could relate to would probably be something along the lines of a company. Even the best of the high priests can fail at his job, their job is to try to communicate with the Holy Family for guidance. This is rare but it is possible. All the priests sit in a circle, inhaling the smoke of their secret mixture. Scientists say it can cause hallucinations, but the priests say it ascends one into a spiritual and mental nirvana in which one awaits the word of Thyatira and Agathocles.

After priests, we have the scientists. These noble Kala take a company of a few warriors, usually spearmen and foot soldiers. They explore the ocean looking for new and unknown minerals and materials to help better the lives of their fellow Kala. Some of the people in this group go as far as being healers. Scientists believe that Thyatira granted the use of herbs and medicinal minerals to help heal all. Some priests deny this to the point of where they say only the permission of the Holy Family permits healing by requests through prayer. It is even more unbelievable that some scientists help the outcasts.

After the scientists are warriors. The warriors work in the barracks, some of them work alone however they are usually either one of the highest or lowest warriors. Warriors are also the ones who do most of the fighting. However, more on the fighting and political opinions will be mentioned later. Humans would think that the Warriors are almost guards. Each warrior is garbed according to his position, the higher up the rank, the more decorative their uniform is. Their rank would be indicated by the number of dots and their color along the headpiece they wear. The design of their armor is specific and fits them almost perfectly. The special design allows the armor to expand and relax to their breaths.

Warrior Ranks/Companies

Spearmen

Their armor is a color of blue, the armor is held together by a special fabric which allows for the fluid motions in which they fight. Their commander bears one green gem on their helmet, while the captain wears two.

Foot Soldiers

Their armor is a color of silver, the armor is composed of separate pieces. This allows them to customize where they need protection most. Their commander bears one red gem on their helmet, captains wear two.

Mounted

These specialists ride on the back of mutated sea-horse, or sharks which they have tamed. Their armor is a color of red, composed of a special chain-mail so it wouldn’t weigh down the rides. Their commander bears one blue gem, captains bear two.

Religion

Religion is one of the most important things to the Kala Ihmiset. Citizens who do not believe in the Holy Family are considered Outcasts and Untouchables. It is scorned upon to be associated with one, let alone help one. They are permitted to live, and will be welcomed back in upon their religious awakening when they start to believe in the Holy Family. Until then, they are segregated to their own village. The Hylkiö village is very, very far from the main city, Uskoa. Rituals, teachings, and other various activities relating to religion are taken very seriously. A couple examples of the various rituals include the Ulot. The Ulot is an interpretive dance which must be performed on the birthday of the Kalaa (the young.) when they reach the age of decision. The motions are very fluidic, and seem complicated to the normal eye. There are two variations, one that symbolizes the choice to be female, and the other to be male.

The masculine version of the Ulot symbolizes the sorrow and pain felt in Belen as his father Agathocles banished and executed his physical form. It contains very exaggerated motions that relate to the pain Belen felt as his body disintegrated before him, and his soul comes out in unfurled life to create the Kala Ihmiset. ((An IRL version that can closely be related to this would be Sergei Polunin’s "Take Me to Church" by Hozier. It will be linked at the end of this post.))

The feminine version of the Ulot symbolizes the control and grace in which Thyatira held herself. The very movements of Thyatira herself became the definition of grace and self-control. The dancer must keep absolute control of their body, as they must emulate Thyatira herself through this interpretative dance. ((An IRL version that can be closely related to this would be Polina Semionova’s ORIGINAL Ballet - H. Gronemeyer instrumental which will be linked at the end of this post.))

Another example is a ritual of pain and devotion. The Tikkota is a ritual specifically for priests, in this ritual, said priest chooses a scientist to extract a drop of poison from the lethal Blue Dragon Sea Slug. This small drop of poison is then dropped on the priest’s tongue, sending excruciating pain throughout. Hopefully the drop was small enough not to kill them. The dedicated priest may not make a sound of pain, or fall over. If this happens, they are suspended from priesthood and much retake the test next year if they wish to continue their practice.

Biology

The Kala Ihmiset have a very interesting biology, but nevertheless, is similar to most fish.

Over the years, they have developed a crude set of gills and lungs which process air. This can mostly be derived from amphibians such as salamanders and lungfish. They are not a perfect set, and therefore they must stop every once in long awhile to re-hydrate. Although, a supply of kincy (kin-chi) helps extend the period by a little longer. Kincy contains a pair of frog lungs, seaweed, and red algae grinded down into a paste. The paste is then rubbed on the chest area and absorbed through the skin.

Swimming, the Kala are swift swimmers. This is due to the crucial placement of their fins and tail. The tail itself doesn’t help with the speed, it’s more of a steering wheel. Without a tail, a Kala could not maneuver the waters as great as its fellow fishmen. Fins placed on their extremities and back help create hydrodynamic forces which create speed and also help with steering. The fins reduce drag and friction in the water, and generate forces which help push the Kala along. The hypermobility in their bone structure helps them move in what seems very painful movements during a swim or battle. One of the ways to take down a Kala is to pierce them in the air lungs, if they have no immediate access to water, both sets will shrivel up and they will die. Of course if the Kala has access to water, he must stay in the water until the air lungs heal.

Their sexuality is Poly-amorous, their mating rituals are very similar to humans. Poly-Amorous means that the Kala Ihmiset can have multiple mates, and they do not care what gender they are. This makes sense for this society because of their special bi-directional males.

Now onto the development of a Kalaa (fishkid). Upon the time of hatching, a Kalaa is born with both genders. This is known as hermaphroditism, which is common among many species under the waters. As they grow, they keep an open-mind to which gender they want most. Upon their 40th birthday, they have reached the Age of Decision. During this time, they will decide on what gender they want. The wanted-parts will stay, and the excess gender parts will be removed. From then on, they will develop that gender fully, whether they chose male or female. 1 of 3 males appear to have the ability of being bi-directional. Derived from cuttlefish, some are able to disguise as a female. They show their true colors to the female, and the dominant male knows no difference. This way, the female gets DNA from both the strong and intelligent Kala for her eggs.

Language

The Kala Ihmiset are forbidden to teach their language to outside people. Any Kala found doing so is punished. How severe the punishment is, will be decided by the priests and the scientists. The minimum punishment is temporary banishment from the surface, and temporal imprisonment. A maximum sentence would be death, which is rarely given. However, common words that some outside races know is listed below. GN stands for gender neutral, which means they have not yet chosen a primary sex.

Mother - Äiti

Father -  Isä

Daughter - Lorne

Son - Borne

GN Offspring - Poltu

Sister - Nol

Brother - Tol

GN Sibling - Bol

Husband - Hulomot

Wife - Wulomot

Diet

The Kala Ihmiset believe the ocean is their hunting ground, and therefore eat most of what it contains. The most common food is clown fish, salmon, and the herbs of the sea. Another big part of their diet contains seaweed, kelp, and red algae. Red algae is known to contain lots of protein, while seaweed and kelp can be used for its various minerals and nutrients. Upon reaching the surface, the diet has grown to accept mushrooms and cold soups. Many of the Kala who have had the chance to taste outside food say they absolutely loved it.

Advantages of a Kala

- Due to being a fish, the Kala Ihmiset are great swimmers and should have a speed buff in the water.

- A Kala would have a racial profession of Alchemist, due to the many toxins they produce and utilize.

- The Kala can breathe in water and on land, due to their amphibious respiratory system. Yet it has its limits.

-A Kala has the maximum average of a 1000 year lifespan. At this time they lay their final eggs.

Disadvantages of a Kala

- The Kala Ihmiset are not very sociable with outside races. Especially the Kha.

- They can only reproduce every 100 years, which means they only can try 10 times.

- While they are good with spears, they are not good with blades. This makes close combat difficult.

- Without a supply of water, arid areas are harmful to the Kala due to the very dry air. Sandstorms are even deadlier.

Forsaken Arrival: A Story of the Holy Family

The following story is what is commonly taught among the Kala Ihmiset on how they arrived in the ocean. While it is controversial among some Kala, it is still widely accepted as being a great story.

Upon the times of ole, the vast waters were protected and nurtured by the Holy Family. This family of the od and goddess were originally conceived to be the original pair. The belief followed that upon an extraordinary situation, they ascended upon a humble request when the stars fell through the night sky.

The Holy Family was strictly led by Mother Thyatira, closely followed by her vigorous husband: Agathocles. Time passed and she bore life to two males Belen and Eros. She eventually bore more children, whose names are, at the moment, not relevant. Thyatira had the beauty of white scales, while Agathocles donned his bold, black scales.

Belen was strong and swift, able to down the toughest shark and outswim the sailfish. He was very dominant, but lacked much common sense. His appearance was graceful, his scales of gold.

Eros was born with a special ability, for some time he was able to disguise himself. With this, the male was smart and very stealthy. Unfortunately, his urges were strong, weird, and often cruel. His appearance was rough, his scales of silver. Eros decided to tease his brother. Disguised as a female, he lured Belen to his bed and defiled it.

Thyatira didn't care, but Agathocles was furious and went beyond his privileges. Agathocles banished his two sons, with the heat of the sun in his hand. The brothers' soul persisted, and the shreds of their physical shells formed the graceful Kala Ihmiset.

Belen's soul can be found in the roots of the female gender development. While fins are usually shorter, a decided female appears graceful. They are swift due to their adapted build, and they are light on their feet.  Eros's soul can be found in the roots of the bi-directional male gender development. 1 of 3 males possess the ability to disguise as a female. They show their true colors to the mating female. This way the female gets contributing sperm from the strength of the dominant male,  and the intellect of the disguised male. The dominant male never knows, and is oblivious. Fins tend to be longer, and their scales a little rough. Easily treated with the pulp of seaweed as a rub. The other children in the Holy Family went on to develop literature, language: written and spoken, music, art, and so even the dances which grace the seastage. The subject of most plays with the romance, intensity, and sorrow of Eros and Belen.

I'll have you know. There are fish that breathe air, the Lungfish have amphibious lungs. Hence the ability to breathe air.

Although that would be cool.
