Mission

The Order of Saint Lucien, a body of men whom have taken to the call of his holiness, the High Pontiff, has been reformed after centuries of inactivity in order to reform a stable and armed militant wing of the Church of Canon to both defend and enforce the tenets of the faith. As such, the Order of Saint Lucien is not an Order which responds to any secular government, thusly allowing the Order to undertake missions considered unconventional to many. Such missions include expeditions into the corrupted wastes of Iblees’ kin, the hunting of heretics/abominations, the safeguarding of the Clergy and its Missionaries, the escorting of Pilgrims to holy-sites, charitable work and to ultimately educate the masses in the word of GOD.

Faith

Brothers of the Order are to follow a strict format of the True Faith of the Humans. All are expected to devote themselves to the forgotten sect of Lucienism, after Saint Lucien of Savoie, the patron saint of the Order. They are hence called Lucienists. This faith protects the men of the order from punishment in the afterlife, and, when practiced, provides a sense of monastic servitude. The conservative aspects of the Lucienist ideology forces the Order to be pious representatives of their master on the soil, the High Pontiff. Many Lucienists can be seen in the halls writing books and reprinting various copies of the Holy Scrolls and Church Thesis.

A Promise of Rebirth

The Order of Saint Lucien, despite a mission to rid the world of heresies through physical means, is unique among all other holy orders, bearing the power to convert and forgive those who cross their way. A last plea for mercy is accepted for criminals, thieves, and heretics who look for a way out of both physical and eternal punishment. Enlistment is for life, unless deemed physically or mentally unfit to continue. In rare occasions, timed servitude can be granted, but this does not allow for one to rise up any more than that of a regular footman.

History

Spoiler

The following is a retelling of events relevant to the Order of Saint Lucien from an unnamed Lucienist Scribe, 1463.

The Vandorian Order 1437-1447

The post-Exodus age brought new challenges to the pampered remains of the Holy Orenian Empire and the Church of the True Faith. Bandits mercilessly roamed the lands, looking for any sign of wealth in a land stripped bare of value by endless factional war. Abresi, once a jewel of Human aristocracy and power, degraded into a cesspool of crime and sin. Petty gangs roamed the streets where such acts would have been swiftly put down years before, and the gall to rob anyone— even the High Pontiff— was plainly present and commonplace. Churches and clergymen fared no differently, and were only spared from meeting their maker by the hands of red-masked men for their precious tithes. Fed up with these constant hostilities towards passive men, Lucien II sent word for any god-fearing men who would be willing to take up the sword and cross.

Though most of the Order of the White Rose had left with Emperor Horen V to the mythical lands of Aeldin, a handful remained in an unsuccessful bid to guard their home fortress of Ard’Kerrack in the Kaedreni heartland. After being ousted from their native homeland by competing Raevir, Flay, and Dwarf-backed Adunians, these veterans found themselves on the streets of Abresi, penniless and without direction. Of them, Jack Rovin — a mere man-at-arms in the White Rose, formed a mercenary band called The Vandorian Order with his son, Voron Rovin, and an ousted Adunian noble Rymuel Elendil. Though initially performing small contracts for their community and gaining notoriety in the last minute construction of defenses at the Siege of Shadowcastle c. 1439, the band was swayed to come to the aid of Lucien II, narrowly saving him as he fended for himself against a group of marauders. With his life saved by these strangers, Lucien II offered them a place as unique holy men; those who would take up the sword in defense of the cross. Although initially hesitant, the men agreed that their lives would be better lived under service of a force of good. This band took up Lucien I, Velwyn Ashford, as their patron saint, and thus the Order of Saint Lucien was born in the year 1447. In memory of the now ruined Ard’Kerrack, the Lucienists built a fortress into the mountains of Eastmarch by the Black Marsh swamp for their headquarters and named it the Temple of Ard’Krallackh.

The First Order of St. Lucien 1447-1460

Offering service to God and his clergy in exchange for expungement of criminal records and entry into the Seven Skies proved to be a lucrative investment for hundreds of sinners, who made their way to the Order’s mountainbase in the Eastmarch, near the ruins of the former Imperial Palace. The Lucienists numbers swelled, attracting the attention of competing forces. Local nobles were notably unhappy with their newfound lack of manpower, and the Decterum, the official military band of the Kingdom of Oren, was suspicious of the competitive nature of the Order. Although the Lucienists kept well within the good graces of King Heinrich ‘the Bastard,’ hostilities were amplified and only narrowly avoided on the old Imperial roads. The authority of the Church to enforce clerical law often collided with the local interests of petty lords and the Decterum, raising tensions skyward.

Despite the rising tensions at home, the Order of St. Lucien found success both within the realm of man and abroad in their efforts of spreading the True Faith. At the request of King Heinrich, the Order successfully lobbied Lucien II to aid the Orenian Kingdom against the Grand Kingdom of Urguan. Early successes in battle were directly correlated with the Order’s intimate knowledge of siege equipment— mechanisms seldom used since the Exodus. The Lucienists proved instrumental in King Heinrich’s efforts of expelling the invading Urguanite army that had been assisting the Tarus Rebellion and pushed into the Grand Kingdom’s territory alongside the bannermen forces of Orenian lords including the Decterum. Outside of the ongoing Human-Dwarf war, the Lucienists made frequent visits to New Malinor in their inquisition lead by Holy Ser Rosencrantz and Grand Commander Voron Rovin against the prominent cultist presence terrorizing the local elven populace. While civil with the non violent populace, the Lucienists repopularized the old tradition of collecting elven ear necklaces from those who obstructed their quest against the followers of Iblees. Rumors of an elven genocide caused some strain between the Elves and the Order of St. Lucien but the Lucienists subdued all attempts to remove their presence in New Malinor.

As time passed on, the Order found it necessary to establish a new bailiwick upon the River Pontar, just miles from the ruined fortress of Ard’Kerrack in the former Kingdom of Kaedrin. This permitted their patrols to run farther than had previously been possible, and created a well-supplied armoury on the strategic divide between the Orcish-controlled ruin of Kingston and the rest of the Orenian Kingdom. The bailiwick guarded a well traveled route into the kingdom and was the scene of many conflicts between the Order of St. Lucien and the forces of Setherien, a corrupted Drakkar whose forces of undead and harbingers caused havoc throughout the Anthosian world. This expansion and flaunted power was not taken well with the local Raev residents, who had both resented the advanced architectural secrets employed by the Lucienist carpenters and their adoption of Lucien I’s dogma over the locally-preferred Ruskan Orthodoxy. Soon enough, a local guerilla faction known as the Coal Miners’ Union waged a continuous assault on the Order’s bases, leading to the issuing of the Proclamation of the Deep Cold by Grand Master Jack Rovin. This demand for reparations was refused by the guerillas and their supporting nobles, and so forth the Raev-Lucienist War was ignited. During this time, High Pontiff Lucien II was assassinated through means of poison. Rumors of tensions between the senior Lucienist command and certain clergymen lead some to believe Grand Master Jack Rovin had played a part in Lucien I’s demise. Others believed that Lucien I’s assassination was an attempt from those that favored Ruskan Orthodoxy to overthrow the dominating Lucienist sect. While the true intent of the murder was left unknown, it caused a greater rift between the Lucienists and Raev. This conflict was put on hold, however, by larger tensions to the south.

War broke out once more between the fledging Kingdom of Oren and the Grand Kingdom of Urguan that humanity had just expelled from their lands. The Krugite tribes and Elven magi came to the Urguanites’ aid and created the Zionist alliance with the sole intentions of destroying the Kingdom of Oren. Operations at the southern half of the continent were abruptly paused, and a seemingly successful war against Setherien left the Lucienists confident. Although the Lucienists and their Raevir rivals were fighting for the same side, relations would sour once more. Naturally, tensions between the Raevir levies and Lucienist forces arose, and in-fighting between both the various commanders and their subordinates. Insulted after a particular round of bickering in-which the Raev commanders accused the Lucienist Order of being “useless”, Grand Master Rovin withdrew his forces completely, arguing that if they were so useless, the Raevir could win the war on their own. The next battle was promptly lost, and a temporary stalemate established between the Humans and Dwarves. Domestic warfare broke out once more.

Although their domestic enemies caused a variety of problems in supplying the network of Lucienists bases, a growing legion of undead warriors was amassing in the snowy wastes north of the Petty Kingdom of Herendul. The Order thusly sent scouts and a small task force under Holy Ser Rick Felder to investigate. In response, the Harbingers of Setherien were raised to combat the Order, and a frontline was established on the northern Orenian border. Furthermore, the Order returned to the ruins of New Malinor and the new bustling Elven civilization known as The Conclave to recruit from the Elven-splinter factions in search of capable auxiliary troops and in search of Setherein-allied cultists. The Order eventually rooted out a Setherien-cultist insurgency in The Conclave and was rewarded generously with supplies and disposable elf-power. Although once holding staunch traditional values towards these beings, the Order found great use in converting them and using the agents on missions to areas where humans were not easily able to infiltrate— namely the city of Hae’lunor and the reclusive Grand Kingdom. These agents were key to informing the Lucienists about a pending invasion plan of Setherien to take over the beloved Cloud Temple. Although too late to rescue the sacred land, a force of Lucienists and Decterum had put aside their differences and were able to forge an uneasy alliance against the common foe and expel the horde from the area.  Later, this was granted by King Heinrich to the Lucienists, who then went on to establish a new papal seat for the recently-adorned High Pontiff Regulus I.

The feuding between his personal bodyguards and the devout followers of the Ruskan Orthodoxy cost High Pontiff Regulus I  popularity with one of the largest sects of the Church of the True Faith. With his new palace still under construction upon the Old Cloud Temple, he held many audiences with Wilfriche Buron, who demanded vast reforms to benefit the Orthodoxy in order to avoid a schism. During the last of these talks, the undermanned Lucienist garrison at the temple was caught off-guard by a large band of Ruskan and Orcish raiders. While putting up a valiant defense against the aggressors, a runner was sent out in a desperate effort to arrange a relief party. In the meantime, the Lucienists held for three days and three nights. Deprived of food and water, a courageous man-at-arms known as Octavio ran out from behind the fortifications with a pickaxe, as his sword had broken earlier in the fight. Single-handedly, the men behind the thin wall witnessed as the lone Man-at-Arms stood his ground against five, and then ten raiders, making it back with a handful of fresh provisions. Inspired by the feat of bravery, the Lucienists launched an offensive at the dawn of the next day, catching the raider camp by surprise. As the forces fought on, a roaring could be felt bolting through the ground, and leading a cloud of dust rode a relief force lead by Faiz Kharadeen and a band of converted guardsmen from the Elven Conclave. The raiders were nearly all killed, but at great cost to the small Lucienist garrison. The Order sought a decisive end to the domestic conflict.

Their wish was granted when the Lucienist garrison of Ard’Krallachk, marching out to investigate the ruins of Castle Greywynn, were met by a large Ruskan-Orcish war party named The Peoples’ Ruskan Army on the frozen fields of Savoy, including King Heinrich’s Decterum who secretly bolstered the Ruskan-Orcish war party despite King Heinrich’s orders to not participate. Although outnumbered and on inferior ground— the Ruskans held a steep hill— the centerline under the Ser Rymeul Elendil and the auxiliary forces of Faiz Kharadeen were able to hold back a Ruskan advance. This allowed Grand Master Jack Rovin to wheel around the hill with his mounted unit and flank the opposing force. The battle, which was named The Battle of Savoie Fields was hard fought by both sides but the Lucienist forces succeeded and solidified their status  as the strongest force in post-Exodus Oren at the time. This was also the beginning of a long feud between the Raevir and the Lucienists that would last for centuries between their descendants.

Another truce was established by King Heinrich as he wanted to refocus the kingdom’s attention back on Setherien and the Zionist forces. King Heinrich first sent his armies to the North to recapture the ruins of Castle Greywynn from Setherien in what became known as The Battle of the North c.1453. The battle was bloody as the corrupted Drakkar himself descended upon the armies of Oren. Of the thousands of men that were sent to battle Setherien, only a few hundred survived the assault and emerged victorious. Sergeant Raigeki Kato, an easterner who Grand Master Jack Rovin mentored and helped raise alongside his son Voron Rovin was the surviving commanding officer from the battle. Reports from the battle stated that the easterner faced Setherien one on one in the midst of the battle and survived while protecting the last surviving Lucienists that attended the battle. For his efforts he was knighted by High Pontiff Regulus I. Despite finding success in pushing Setherien’s forces further north, the Lucienists suffered numerous casualties including Ser Rick Felder in their skirmishes with the forces of Setherien and were spread too thin fighting cultists in Malinorian land and assisting King Heinrich in his ongoing war with the Zionist alliance. King Heinrich would fall shortly after the Battle of the North in an open field skirmish in the new land known as The Fringe where nations contested for new colonies to support their war effort.

A growing fear in the secular realm for the growing power of the Church caused a great divide in the realm of man. While King Heinrich attempted to soothe the relations between his kingdom and the Church, his death alienated the Lucienists as they lost their greatest ally. An imposter High Pontiff was hired to crown Franz Carrion which was quickly protested against by the Lucienist force in attendance. During the ensuing arguments between the Orenian and Church forces, harbingers of Setherien attacked but were quickly repelled by the Lucienists. When they attempted to return to the coronation, the Orenian forces has mobilized and attacked the Lucienists killing many of them. A few survivors reported back to Grandmaster Jack Rovin and delivered the news that the Lucienists were officially outlawed in the Kingdom of Oren.

A great flood occurred when Setherien melted the snow in the North and sank all of Anthos, trapping the descendants in The Fringe. Losing his homeland and facing alienation from the realm of man took a toll on Grand Master Jack Rovin and his main objective now was seeking the survival of the brotherhood he had created and the Church he was sworn to protect which lead to his involvement in the plots of Bishop John of Darfey and High Pontiff Regulus I to overthrow the Raevir Carrion dynasty. The Papal Leadership would persuade the Decterum to turn against Franz Carrion which would become known as the Franciscan Massacre which included the deaths of Franz and Wilfreche Buron, the long time enemy of the Lucienists. John of Darfey would also come into contact with the humans who left Oren during the Exodus for the massive continent of Aeldin and persuade many of them to return including Peter Chivay, the former King of Kaedrin and Grandmaster of the Order of the White Rose.

A regency council was put in command of Oren which included High Pontiff Regulus I and Grand Master Jack Rovin and their allies in both the secular and the Church. With the remnants of the former Orenian regime still fighting against the Church controlled regency, the regency made peace with the Zionist Alliance to squash the Raevir remnants but were repelled at the Battle of Mt. Augustus. The Church’s alliance with non humans would damage the reputation of the Church in the eyes of those who remained neutral in the Kingdom of Oren and would be looked back at as one of the darker moments in the Order of St. Lucien’s history. With no end to the conflict in sight, Orenians sought a new ruler to unite the warring parties. It was before a group of Orenians consisting of clergy, Lucienists and men who returned from the Exodus that the Prophet Godfrey descended from the Seven Skies. Before returning to the heavens, the Prophet Godfrey spoke the word “Peter” which was assumed to be Godfrey’s choice to reform the Holy Orenian Empire. Peter Chivay would be crowned Emperor by High Pontiff Regulus I, the High Pontiff’s final act before abdicating the pontificate.

The Prophet Godfrey’s descent from the Seven Skies

The Lucienists reorganized their forces in the newly constructed capital of Kaldonia following the peace Emperor Peter Chivay brought to the realm of man. The Church at the time was shortly under the control of the studious High Pontiff Pius II who was a staunch supporter of the Lucienists before ascending to the pontificate. His rule was short lived however as his ‘Maltist’ views came into conflict with Bishop John of Darfey’s agenda and was openly hunted down by his former allies in the Church until he was finally captured and executed. Bishop John of Darfey would take the name Paul III upon his ascension to the pontificate and garner the hatred of Emperor Peter who had declared war on the Zionists who were blindsided by the Lucienist’s betrayal to strengthen the human realm with the reformation of the Holy Orenian Empire. High Pontiff Paul III’s abuse clerical authority and political dogma would lead to The Third Interregnum c. 1460-1471 with the Imperial government’s declaration The Edict of the Church of the Reformed Communion, 1459 which put the Church under the Emperor and limited the powers of the clergy. The Order of St. Lucien was also disbanded at this time with its remnants being absorbed into the newly formed Imperial Army under Marshal Vibius de Sola. After eleven years, the Church of Canon would form under High Pontiff Daniel I.

The Second Order of Saint Lucien 1521-1526

The surviving Lucienists would form the Apostolic Konigreich of Aesterwald on the Atherean continent under Konig Jack Rovin in response to Vibius de Sola’s successful coup against the Chivay dynasty and the rise of the second Carrion dynasty which would resort to years of fighting known as The Schism War that ultimately came to an end with the Destruction of Vanderfell, the capital of Aesterwald, at the hands of Blood Mages in 1491. With the few surviving Rovins declared traitors by the reformed  Kingdom of Oren under King Andrik Vydra, surviving Waldenians sought refuge in the newly formed Caliphate of Khalestine ruled by the longtime Lucienist affiliate Caliph Faiz Kharadeen who took it upon himself to hide his wanted friends. Lucienism and the Vander traditions would fall into obscurity with only details of the culture surviving in the Caliphate’s famed library.

The Dukes’ War c. 1518 was fought between the Ashford controlled Kingdom of Oren and the Ducal Coalition comprised of the Duchies of Adria, Vanaheim and Haense. This had ramifications across the Isles of Vailor as many of the other nations depended on the outcome of the war for their own various means given humanity maintained military dominance since the Third Holy Orenian Empire under House Chivay. During this time, a disguised monk by the name of Baudric Rovin had begun recruiting men across the Isles with a particular focus on descendants of the original Order of Saint Lucien in Khalestine in order to reform the holy brotherhood. Baudric’s plans allowed for a profound revival of the Lucienist Sect and Vander traditions amongst the Qalasheen populace in Khalestine with notable individuals such as Adil the Eagled-Eyed and Nafis Yar, the Qalasheen bastard son of one of Ser Raigeki’s sons. The Second Reformation of the Order of Saint Lucien differed from its predecessor by allowing the initiation of women with a woman named Aisha being the first sister of the Order of Saint Lucien. The Order’s existence was kept secret with members wearing monk robes identical to Baudric’s. In a secret ceremony in the Bailiwick of Khalestine donated to the Lucienists by Caliph Faiz Kharadeen, Baudric declared himself Grand Master of the reformed Order of Saint Lucien and knighted Nafis Yar as his Grand Commander, Peter Rovin and Darius de Denesle.

At the Battle of the Forest c.1520, the Lucienist entered Peremont in their monk disguises while blessing the various ranks of bannermen loyal to King Olivier. When it came time to meet the Ducal forces, the Lucienists revealed themselves and rode out into battle amongst the loyalist forces for a sound victory over the Ducal Coalition. Grand Master Baudric and his knights would meet with High Pontiff Daniel II who was an ally of the Lucienist during his years as a humble priest and made a vow to protect the High Pontiff from any attempts on his life. Since its first disbandment, the Order of St. Lucien was outlawed from reforming after the formation of the Church of Canon but the High Pontiff accepted the Order’s protection. The Order would accompany the Caliphate of Khalestine’s forces and work the siege weapons at The Siege of Barrowyck c. 1521 which would crumble the Ducal Coalition leading to their surrender afterwards. The city of Brelus is sacked by the Loyalist forces but the Order of St. Lucien refrains from the looting of the once thriving city and retreat back to Ard Ghorrock to continue their work in cleansing the Caliphate of Khalestine of their cultist problem.

In the absence of the Order of St. Lucien, Guy de Bar was crowned king in Oren but was disposed of three years later by supporters of John I of House Horen who would reform the Holy Orenian Empire in 1526 after signing the Treaty of Metz. The Order of Saint Lucien would disband shortly after the crowning of John I for unknown reasons and would be reformed under the former Grand Commander Nafis Yar as a mercenary company known as Hallowvale Contracting which would continue many of the Vander and Lucienist beliefs they inherited from their time in the Order. Grand Master Baudric Rovin would disappear after the Order’s disbandment, his fate left unknown.

The Third Order of Saint Lucien 1654-Present

Robert Rovin was wearing a Lucienist tabard when he first entered Adelsburg despite it being over a century since the Order’s second disbandment. With the help of a holy knight, Robert Rovin was given audience with High Pontiff Everard IV where he aired his intentions of amending ties between the Lucienists and the Church of Canon. Following the High Pontiff to perform a wedding in Santegia, Robert Rovin was caught in the crossfire of Santegian terrorists attacking the High Pontiff during the wedding. Robert brought the High Pontiff to safety after buying them enough time to escape. When asked what he desired in gratitude for his daring rescue of the High Pontiff, Robert declined any titles of wealth and simply asked to take up the cloth. The High Pontiff ordained Robert and sent him out on a quest for three years to travel and spread the faith. During this time, The Holy Orenian Empire had entered the civil war in Urguan on the side of the loyalists against the Frostbeard Clan. The Empire was now a shell of its former self and Canonists were openly killed in the streets of Adelsburg by raiders and heretics. After the three years, Robert returned to the High Pontiff with a report on what he had saw wandering across the land. A church militant was needed, Robert requested, in order to protect the faithful. Robert offered to have his small band of followers reform the Order of Saint Lucien in support of the Church of Canon to make amends for the past strife between the Lucienists and Canonists. High Pontiff Everard agreed and in 1654, the Order of Saint Lucien was reformed for a third time in the former city/island of Metz which was renamed Rhodesia after the Rhodesian Cross. Kaer’Rosencrantz was built shortly after the formation, becoming the official home of the Lucienists.

Robert Rovin quickly amassed a large following, mainly disgruntled soldiers wishing to return to service in order to combat the non-human threat brewing from the Empire’s intervention in the Urguanite civil war. The Order of Saint Lucien also recruited veterans from The Kingdom of the Westerlands who brought with them knowledge of the undead from their well documented and ultimately unsuccessful crusade against the forces of Mordring.

Despite becoming one of the most formidable forces in the Isles of Axios, The Holy Orenian Empire was met with the enemy at its capital. Emperor John VI was killed during a coup orchestrated by his distant cousin Canonius Horen and the Empire was declared dissolved and being reorganized into the Kingdom of Renatus. However, a regency council organized by the Imperial government was formed to hold on to the Empire lead by Frederick Horen-Marna. The regency council failed to retake Adelsburg from Canonius and Frederick Horen-Marna had went missing, his fate unknown. Frederick’s son Frederick Pius who was undergoing a squireship in the Order of Saint Lucien was next in line and after speaking with Canonius, dissolved the Empire officially and released the Kingdom of Haense from the vows. Under Frederick Pius with the High Pontiff’s blessings, The Apostolic Kingdom of Marna was formed in 1639 with the Order of Saint Lucien acting as its protector.

In an alliance bound by the Canonist faith, the High Pontiff Everard IV declared a crusade against the Kingdom of Santegia and the Kingdom of Norland for their heretical Red Faith beliefs and their attempts to bring down the Canonist faith - the last thing keeping the divided realm of man loosely together. The Kingdom of Haense, Renatus and Marna rallied behind the Church of Canon and in one year the Kingdom of Santegia surrendered to the crusaders and agreed to help the Church in crusading against the Kingdom of Norland.

The Sacking of Vjorhelm c. 1640 was a quick affair after the decimation of the Santegian and Norlandic forces pushed the Kingdom of Santegia out of the war. The Norlanders barricaded themselves inside their superfort known as The Krag while the Canonist coalition occupied Vjorhelm slaughtering those who were unable to reach The Krag beforehand. Having invaded via land invasion, the Canonist coalition was unable to siege The Krag without first laying waste to the abandoned capital of Vjorhelm. The Ash Tree at the town square was burnt down and the capital sustained heavy damage from the pillaging. A brave squad of Renatians covered by Lucienist arrow fire was able to blast a hole in the Krag Fortress and storm it, killing most of the Norlanders who were unable to escape in time as the walls to their superfortress fell. The Kingdom of Norland would soon afterwards swear fealty to the Kingdom of Renatus.

King Frederick Pius leading the Order of Saint Lucien alongside Grand Master Robert Rovin, 1460

The Order of Saint. Lucien returned to the Island of Rhodesia after the crusade in high spirits for they had gotten their first taste of true warfare and came out victorious. But not long after their return, a force of undead attacked Rhodesia and was able to push into the local township of Ratville. Despite the victorious Lucienists retaking Ratville and the surrounding areas of Rhodesia, a poisonous substance known as thanhium began to spread that froze the surrounding lake around the island. Before their exposure to the thanhium was prolonged any longer, the Lucienists gave merciful deaths to the livestock about to die and evacuated the island for Cloud Temple alongside the other descendants fleeing the spread of thanhium across Axios.

Upon reaching the continent of Atlas, Grand Master Robert abdicated from leadership and declared Ser Rakim Yar, son of Nafis Yar, the next Grand Master of the Order of Saint Lucien in the year 1643.
