The Delvan Mushroom

Many individuals seek to free themselves from the trappings of our world, and yet most fail, resigned to look above and watch the birds who have flown above their heads for all time.  And yet another has beaten man to flight, and it is a mushroom.

The Delvan Mushroom is a rare sight, even for those who know where to look. The shrooms themselves are small, stout plants, and emit a faint blue glow when in any low-light condition. They grow in clusters with an average of two per cluster. The clusters hover over the water of lakes and swamps, their bobbing motions allowing them to occasionally touch the water and drink. As the cluster ages, their ability to float increases. Once it reaches maturity, it achieves the proper height to spread its spores far and wide.

As with most rare plants, they can be quite useful to anyone lucky enough to stumble upon them. The properties of the plant, it’s natural buoyancy, can be utilized in a plethora of ways. For example, a paste made from the shrooms could be applied to a heavy object, making it lighter and easier to lift. A fair amount of concentrated delvan oil could be worked into an object to allow it to float. Yet the amount required and the lack of strength of the substance would make this method very inferior to magics with can produce the same effects.

There are obviously other uses besides these, whether it be in potions or others mediums.

Red Lines:

  • You cannot replicate the greatest feats of magic when it comes to causing things to float. Ie: No floating towers

  • The shrooms are rare, and should be treated as such

  • The knowledge of the would be rare at the point of the lore’s implementation, so don’t assume immediate knowledge of the plant

Open to any and all feedback, and open to changing the lore if necessary, this is far from an idea I have set in stone.
