The Republic of Italy

Leader/s: Consul Quintus Vibenius Iulian; aged 46 (Progressives), Consul Manius Lucceius Trenico; aged 53 (Conservatives) (NPC)

Capital: Roma

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Founded 26 years ago, after the infamous 'Italian Rebellion' and Italy's subsequent succession from the decadent and corrupt Empire, the Roman Republic was re-established as the Republic of Italy. Though the Republic is yet to claim the legitimacy of the Roman State it has been in staunch opposition of Frankish Imperial Hegomony for the past two decades. The Republic is led by two popularly elected Consuls who serve for a term for five years. (These Consuls may be re-elected after 10 years, during this 10 year period they govern a particular senatorial province.)

The Italian Republic's lands consist of Senatorial Provinces, and Imperial Provinces; The Senatorial Provinces include Florentia, Bari, Napoli and Sicilia. Currently Cyrene is the only Imperial Province. Latium is it's one unique capital province. No past Consul can be given governship of Latium, for it is governed by current Consuls.

"Senators, please!"

The voice of Quintus echoed over the hall, quieting down the raucous noise that came from a large scale argument between the Senators. "Intervening in the Iberian Crisis is a foolish idea, not until we've strengthened our position in northern Italy. Instead I suggest we send diplomats to Venice, the King there has always shared our views on the Empire. A military alliance should be organised to stand against the oppression of that decadent state, or if they are not interested in such a motion then a defensive pact ought to suffice. Until then, I propose we raise a regiment of cavalry to bolster our armed forces."

"We must also put development into our trade, Therefore I am also proposing we sent envoys to our neighbours to establish trade pacts that will mutually benefit both nations involved." With that, the Consul sat down and waited for his colleague to take the floor and propose his own bills.

The Kingdom of Dumnonia stands as the agricultural hub of the South, the fertile plains known far and wide as the cradle of industry in Subgallo Brythonic Britain. After the withdrawal of the Gauls from the island, the Dumnonii people have seen a period of unparalleled prosperity. Despite their diminishing knowledge of the imperial system, the Kingdom utilised the Gallic facilities and infrastructure that had been constructed in the southern territories.

CULTURE

Before the arrival of the Gauls in Britain, the Dumnonii tribes inhabited as far as the Iceni held Fenns in the northeast, to the south-western peninsula. As the Gallic legions began to settle in Londinium and the south-east, the Dumnonii seem to have been driven back to Kernow, yet a healthy trading relationship remained between the two peoples - so much so that as the Gauls fled the island, the re-habitation of the Dumnonii was not prevented.

Wealth for the Dumnonii came from tin mining, where it was exported from the island of Ictis off of the coast of Penn an Wlas. There, the expensive material was shipped across Europe, from the northern Amorican ports of Gaul, to Rome.

As the Gauls began to withdraw from Britain, a mixture of barbarians from the Germanic provinces of the continent began to replace them in the eastern territories. They were not many in strength due to the Empire’s continued existence, however they were enough to threaten the newly re-established Brythonic order. The legendary Gallo-Brythonic warrior king of Dumnonia, Artorius Pendragon, for whose crest the Kingdom still carries into battle, is etched into the minds of the Dumnonii. As Celtic legend suggests, Artorius - the son of the Gallic general Uther - led the successful defence of Albion  against the Angles and the Saxons at Cad Mynydd Baddon.

The present King of Dumnonia, Gertaint, traces his dynasty directly to Artorius, through his bastard son, Amhar.

ACTIONS

As the Gauls evacuate their last remaining stronghold in Britannia, the Dumnonii King negotiates an agreement to partition the territories between the Kingdom of Mercia to the north. In exchange for Mercia taking the trading city of Londinium, King Geraint agrees to wed King helred’s daughter.

As an extension of the agreement, trading partnerships are opened with the Gallic Empire, and Mercia.

The King watches the Welsh incursions into its territories closely, and moves its entire standing army to Caer Gloui, a Gallic encampment turned fortress built on the mouth of the River Severn.

The First of the Vikings

Another throne broken, as if I needed another reason to venture outside, King Haakon Haraldsson whined, drumming his fingers atop the hilt of his blade. The hall he stood in was cold, empty, and devoid of light, just the comforts he wanted on a winter’s evening. The King looked back to the splintered chair behind him, shaking his head as he trudged over to his former seat. Better to take your gifts than accept them. Nobody poisons the wine they intend to drink. His large head craned to the rows of windows behind him, watching the snow from outside slowly drifting in. The fisherman should be back to shore by now, as should the woodcutters. Even that thought alone bored him more than the council he had to hold on occasion. He won the loyalty of the petty kingdoms and tribes through destroying them in the field of battle, not listening to their petty qualms and talks of weather patterns.

An empty chest sat against the wall opposite of the King, a large hide shield beside it. Haakon strode over to the chest, running his hands over the gold and polish that had made this foreign beauty. Unfortunately, the treasure he had won had long been spent in an effort to bribe the loyalty of a few stubborn tribes. I’ve grown as soft as those I once slaughtered and plundered. It had only been a year since he had last led a raid, but unification of Norway had cut his time and patience to ribbons.

Suddenly came a knock at the door. Without waiting for a response, a short, dark-haired man walked in. He wore a brown cloak, but the hints of armor underneath were clear to the Viking’s keen eyes. Haakon couldn’t recognize him but for the axe and shield at his side. The King raised his brows at the man, his own hand inching closer towards the sword at his side. The intruder began coughing violently, reaching a hand into his cloak and procuring a small flask. Taking a long swig, the newcomer drooped his torso over and began panting heavily. After a good minute of heavy breathing the man’s head swiveled up, his blue eyes meeting those of the King.

“Call the jarls, this is a council you will want to convoke.”

The Disgraced Jarl

See the source image

It had only been a month since the murder of his cousin, but Jarl Eric Gormsson could not pull the knife from his back. Even calling himself jarl felt like a betrayal, as to hide the truth from his own mind would only weaken him. Not as if he could stave off as much as a bandit attack now, for only a few dozen families still recognized him as their liege. They were far braver than he, choosing to follow him up the dangerous coast, to land where rebuilding could begin. The cold wind bit at his exposed skin as he plodded through sand and snow. The women and children feared for his health, but Jarl Eric had forsaken any spare clothing as to give it to those even weaker than him. It was painful, but penance for his cowardice in the face of death.

Perhaps Forseti would look upon him favorably after his atonement was over.

A Stranded Brother

See the source image

Word came from the homeland infrequently, if at all. Halfdan Haraldsson tapped his foot impatiently as he sat atop a large stone throne. It was beautiful, but the greatest discomfort he had ever known, bar whenever he was out at sea. The ceiling and front wall of the keep, not yet complete, allowed him a view of the beauty of the Welsh landscape. Rolling hills all around, mountains further away, forests covering what had not been cleared, Halfdan was content to sit here for months, hopefully years. The evening air nipped at him, but he enjoyed the cloudy weather that covered the setting sun. At least it wasn’t snowing, and fires would start to appear around the town soon, another sight Halfdan enjoyed.

Halfdan was far less physically imposing than the rest of his brothers, cousins even. He was short in stature, and thinner in frame. He hated the ocean, except to look upon it, and was no warrior at heart. To be fair, he was only chosen to advise the old Jarl Olaf, for he would have made a poor hostage. However, he was sharp of mind, and when Jarl Olaf laid on his deathbed from a fever his final command was to proclaim Halfdan as his successor. The ships had not even reached shore yet, but Halfdan found himself commanding grizzled veterans, bloodthirsty young men, wives complaining something or another, and children that poked at his leg and gazed up at him wide-eyed. Because he had earned no prestige in battle, many of the warriors and commonfolk within the fleet seemed wary of Halfdan’s rule. Though he had no treasure of wars, the King’s brother did have a silver tongue, and talk of a change in leadership died before it had truly began. Even then, it was a relief when the expedition had reached shore, where they were greeted by the invasion fleet that had taken a good part of the mainland before them.

Now in command of thousands of soldiers and commonfolk, alongside his own council, Halfdan set to work trying to find out what King Haakon’s intentions were. The jarls and chieftains who sat on the council called for expansion, capitalizing on the gains that many of them had made not long before. However, despite his lack of information regarding the local kingdoms, Halfdan figured they would not take another invasion as lightly as they had before. If his brother was too busy to send orders then Halfdan was under no obligation to follow presumed wishes. He would play his game, the one he knew he could win.

The Kingdom of Yerushalayim-Yisrael
Ruler: Kohen Gadol Mattityahu Maccabee III

Capital: ירשלים (Anglicized: Yerushalayim, or Jerusalem)
Army: 5000 "Maccabee" Medium Infantry
Navy: 10 knarrs

Population: 400,000

Tech: B

Cities: 2 including Capital

AP: 11 (9 first turn)

A Divided Kingdom

The Kohen Gadol had taken reign of the Kingdom a mere three years ago. He had been biding his time for those years, and felt he must only bide a bit more before he could revive the legacy of his ancestors: Yehudah, Mattityahu, Yoni, and Shimon, the great Maccabean conquerors and restorers of the Great Temple. Now the plan was to set in motion. He offered remaining Imperial Settlers to return to their homeland, tongue in cheek. Though, he would of course offer naval protection for the trip home, and even some reparations for the homes they were expected to abandon. Furthermore, he revamped the Priesthood, hoping to stop the apostatizing, or as he called it 'hellenizing' of Jews becoming Christians.

Actions

  • Former Imperial Christian Settlers are offered to return home (sword in hand) with protection from the Yisraeli Navy. (0 AP)
  • The Priesthood is restored and revitalized, in hopes of offering return to Jews who have apostatized. (0 AP)
  • A unit of Medium infantry is put into training (4 AP)
  • Investment into agriculture nearby both cities occurs, in hopes of growing the Jewish populations there. (2 AP)
  • Mattityahu commissions the development of the Maccabean University in Yerushalayim. (3 AP)
  • Delegations from all nations offering trade and non aggression pacts are accepted.
  • A scouting party seeks out At-Tafilah, hoping to learn more of the Muslims there.
  • A private delegation is sent to the Persian King.

For nearly a thousand years, the Persians had ruled over the lands of Iran and Mesopotamia, and seen dozens, if not hundreds of other peoples, tribes, kingdoms and even Empires rise and fall. The Archives and Libraries of Babylon, Susa, Cstesiphon and Nineveh held the knowledge and entire recorded history of the men of the west, dating back to Sumer and Lagash, and the direct heritage of the country’s people could be traced back to the very same.

Although the Empire had reclined in some ways - Judea was no longer held, nor Egypt or Lydia, the Heartland was still strong and safe - and the most wealthy of lands in perhaps the whole world. A thousand years of internal peace, development and cultural inflow and outflow had made the Persian people the most well fed, the most literate, and most capable of all peoples - According to the Persians, at any rate.

Anushuriwan II, dressed in the Imperial comforts would stand at the foot of a behemoth structure, easily some twenty floors tall, of gold, sandstone, and polished blue lazuli - the Imperial Library of Darius, built in the 2nd century BC. Having been long expanded by rulers after, Anushuriwan would be thinking of leaving his own mark upon the edifice - and his city, as a whole.

Imperial Actions

Expansion of the Library of Darius

Construction would soon begin, with labourers and craftsmen starting the long process of gathering the materials and logistics to expand.

Investments in the Crown Lands

In order to ensure the smooth and continued profitability of the Persian economy, subsidies and financial encouragements are granted to spice and silk merchants along the silk road trading route.

Antiochos, Basileus, 19

Jason, Heir to Macedon, 17

Larissa, Thessaly, Macedon

The lodgings the Archon had provided his Basileus proved fitting.  The bed was comfortable, he found, after a night well spent with Theophilia.  The pale woman by his side still brought a grin to the young king’s face. A fitting mistress for the Basileus.  True, such things were perhaps not Christian… But the Archbishop had assured him that he would not be excommunicated for such an affair.  Although his personal relationship with Christ would suffer.

Extricating himself from her arms, Antiochos made his way over to the balcony, staring out over the city to the marshalled men, drilling and training.  Antiochos rubbed the patchwork beard he was nursing as he thought about the matter to himself. Could do with another unit of pikes, and archers perhaps… But they were less than useful without the hallmark of Macedon.  Cavalry.

The nobles still held resentment against him for refusing their support when he ascended to the throne.  His father had made numerous efforts to win them to his side, whereas Antiochos was more demanding of their support.  They had tax breaks, they had prestigious positions in the military. What more did they want?

But their opposition, as unjustified as it was, prevented him from achieving a true unit of Companion Cavalry.  Perhaps one of the best units he could ever have. Without its ranks being filled by trained nobles, he was forced to make-do with what he could find.  But they were not companions. They were just cavalry.

Blowing air out his nose he turned away to his desk, resentment building up in him ever so slightly.  There was other work to be done. Ionia, frightened of Byzantine expansion, sent word for a defensive alliance… Antiochus frowned.  He would have to send the Basileus of Byzantium a letter of his own. The Athenians had requested a trade agreement… One he was more than happy to accept.  As the rightful Hegemon of all Greece, it was only fitting that his subjects build relations with him.

The thought brought on another bout of anger at the nobles.  How dare they? He needed his knights, his companions. How could he pacify them?  He had to. It was necessary that he brought the ******* to heel.

He needed support.  He needed… He needed to end things with Theophilia.  Some men would no doubt rejoice at the opportunity to marry their daughters to the Macedonian Basileus no matter his relations, but it was best not to take that chance.  His heirs needed to be legitimate. He could not throw a bastard in there to ruin things.

Slowly, Antiochos moved over to the bedside, tapping her lightly.  She woke up with a smile, and it hurt him to know that it would soon be crushed.  “What is it love? Do you want to have another go?”

With a deep breath, he said it. “I can no longer have you.  It is time… It is time I sought a bride.”

He would ride to Athens the next morning.  His Hetaira, his lover, watched morosely from the balcony as the procession of the Basileus left.  She had lost the kingdom.

Ibraheem Aladeen sits in his home as two of his best friends enter to give him the report “Akhi, we have learned that the nearby towns are much larger than our own, With the majority being Christian.” said a young man almost the age of Ibraheem “Hamza, Is correct, Also Egypt Accepted trade but sadly our Muslim Brothers could not accept do to their trade can not fit another.” Khalid would smile and look to Hamza “We also found out there was a Bandit Camp Far north around twenty to forty man strong…” Hamza would add giving a sigh. Ibraheem would frown as he went to scratch his chin “Send word to Our Neighboring Villages, Informing them of the camp, Inform them that we can not currently deal with them, and inform them that we shall inform our king if he may deal with them, Inform them to be weary on the roads, and we pray that they may be safe.” he would look to khalid as he seemed to want to speak gesturing his hand with a soft smile “Zakat went well.. And it was Given to the families who have had it rough this year.” khalid would inform offering a weak smile obviously disturbed by the bandits “Let us send a trade offer to the Persians, They may accept?” with nods and finishing of conversation with  ibraheem saying “Bismillah, May Allah bless our work, go with Allah, and keep our Prophet to our hearts and Our Shahada in our blood.” with placing their hands on their hearts and dipping their heads upon hearing the name of the Prophet they smiled and replied “Bismiliah.” and went off to work.

          Clan O'Neill

                                                           O'Neill_coat_of_arms.png

Brian MacGowan was walking through the hardened dirt streets of the capital. As he looked around he noticed that quite a few people were improving their shops, expanding them and making sure they became more profitable. Brian had heard that lord O'Neill had something to do with that though he was unsure how. In any case, it was nice to have a look around the city as he headed to the church in town. Which was quite nice, he had even asked Eithne to go with him to the church.

After some time walking he arrived at the church a bit before the mass started. As he walked inside he could see Eithne talking with some of the other girls from town whilst some of his own friends were also talking with each other in one corner.

Brian then walked towards his friends and spoke. "Ello my friends. How are thee doing on this blessed day ?" To which his friends responded with positive answers and then continued their discussion.  Liam, a brown haired person with brown hair then spoke once more"I heard that the Sea Kings are going to fight each other for one reason or another. With the Swedes and the Danish going to fight the Norse." At this, another of Brian's friends snorted. "Good riddance I say, they are barely Christian and they probably still worship those pagan gods of theirs in secret. " The group shrugged and that and then started to talk to each other about the local news and other stuff like that.

Then the great bells rang and they went silent and Brian made his way to the church bells, waving to Eithne and moving to sit next to her at one of the church benches. They then remained silent as the priest spoke of god and other such matters of religion. Then they said amen every so often and then sometime later the priest was finished. Brian then spoke some more with Eithne but not before he heard a few rumors from somewhere in the room. "Oh Cian has been busy for quite a few days, he has been working for the king together with some of his friends to work on making better bows, interesting is it not." Brian did not know who said it but shrugged, thinking it not important. He then left the church and went back to the keep
