The rider made for Caer Gloui without pause. The snow littered the world, blanketed it in a sheet of ice. There was nothing, nothing but white. Nothing but the incessant whipping of the falling blizzard - that and trees. This rider was, of course, an important one. He carried a message direct from the regional capital of Isca, with word from the king's council.

uutyJJ3KK_12HmvQbm0DaUtIrQ1kkeLlk4KvUdjql_fHgzvvhTevbltqr7uOoeQmcseNf4KAJYy40omXdmCdJ3vgIsODbS9vHyjjcpNTNkVajjL3QBL91iZmrxDiUcqqEmYlqUAJ

The horseman arrived to the encampment late at night. Shouts erupted from the hastily erected palisades as the messenger rode towards the gates. They opened, and he made for the royal tent.

“Sire, said the dripping man, bowing upon the floor, “Word from your council: The men of Cymru have moved their armies to the north. Your passage into their kingdom will be unopposed.

King Geraint nodded, dismissed the messenger, and assembled his generals.

“Men, now is the time to strike. Rally the soldiers, we go to war.”

ACTIONS

The King of Dumnonia sends word to Pennal, where the Welsh army is stationed, officially declaring a state of hostility between the two nations. He makes for Gwent, the Welsh capital, with terms for the King of Cymru. He will surrender all provinces west of the River Avon, to the once-Gallic outpost of Leucarum, in return for a guarantee of peace and the safe passage of any Welsh refugee through occupied land. If the terms are rejected, then the Dumnonii army prepares for an immediate siege against Gwent. The King does not call for Mercian aid.

A Dumnonii emissary arrives in Norwegian-held Rhos, in northern Cymru. He lays terms for the provincial chiefton to relay to his brother, the king. The Norse territories in England shall be guaranteed against foreign wars in return for a trading partnership between the two people’s, and an expectation that the Haraldsson clan will raise their banners in the event of a Swede or Dane incursion into Dumnonii territory.

King Gertaint appoints his cousin, Ire, to oversee the renovation of ancient Druidic road-shrines across the Southern territories.

King Derec marches among the quiet walls of his keep in Gwent. Courtiers and noblemen all turn to him as he walks past, but none open their mouth to speak. The door to the council chambers creaked as he opened it. Quietly, he shuffled into his throne.

The room was filled with silent for few moments more, before the King finally spoke. “The Dumnonians want war.” He spoke, “And war they will have.”

The council roared, a mix of cheers and shouts of dismay. While the King had made his decision, there are without a doubt some who would not support it.

“Send word to General Morlais. Myself and my personal guard will seek protection in the fortress in Pennal.”

The Kingdom of Leon

King Garcia I surveyed his court with an intense look in his eyes. A war was brewing with the tyrant rulers to his east. His wife the queen sat next to him. His four kids had been sent off to their respective tutors. He sat their pondering his future, the plans and the impending fighting that was about to ensue.

His diplomat from Venice marched into the silent room, with a grin on his face. “I have secured our trade relations of the Venetians. With the sale of the isle to them as well.” He’d signal for the crew of men to bring in the large bags of gold from the land purchase. “I think you will be pleased my King.” He’d bow and nod before heading out of the courtroom.

Ruler: Basileus Attalus the Second of the Nicator dynasty (Age 23)

Consort: Basilis Philia of Cyprus (Age 20)

Issue: None

Capital: Pergamon

Cities: Attalya

The young Basileus sighed as the quill dropped from his hand, slumping back in his seat envoy waiting in the doorframe of the grand room stepped forward and nervously grabbed the parchment Attalus had just finished signing. “I-is that everything your royal high- I mean your Grace?” he’d stutter, nodding and running off and out of the room as soon as his Basileus waved his hand dismissing him. The past year had been a whirlwind, beginning with the annexation of Cyprus and a feared Byzantine invasion, and now ending in a league of the Greek states with peace and prosperity for them all assured. Of course this had all taken a toll on Attalus, as this had been the first true challenge during his rule and he had strained himself trying to ensure the defense of his country and arranging diplomatic relations. He sighed once more, straightening himself once again in his seat and addressing the men assembled around the table “As you all know with the League of Olynthus now formed and our borders secure, I intend to raise the prestige and standing of Ionia to the same level of our new allies in Macedon and Byzantium. While we will always honour our alliance and trust they shall as well, we need to ensure that we can rely on our own forces to hold their ground and that we can support ourselves economically. It is only when we achieve this that we can claim equal status to them and be recognized by other states as such.” he’d wave a hand, trailing off as he glanced around the room to gauge his councillors reactions. “And so to achieve this, I intend on beginning to invest more resources into the local quarries and masons, as with the growth of our state will come more need for marble buildings and decorations, and furthermore the excess sent out to trade will bring more strength to our economy. Once we begin to see this growth in Pergamon, I intend to shift focus to Attalya, establishing a strong shipbuilding industry there that will also work to begin designing and building a navy to protect our coasts.” He’d bite his lip, glancing about the room before finishing “Which brings me to the last bit of business…” he’d turn to his steward, a finely dressed middle-aged gentleman with a balding head  “Thales, I need you to summon the head of the Alchemist’s guild in the city, I have a request to ask of someone with his… expertise” he’d sigh once more. Having to rely on the alchemists wasn’t something Attalus was necessarily comfortable with, as they had a reputation about them for being shut-ins and many speculated they still practiced the ways of the Old Gods due to their craft. But, what he needed from them could provide Ionia with one of the greatest weapons they could ever know, and having it would ensure the Kingdom’s rise. After clarifying things with the rest of his councilors, he dismissed them and left, heading off to once again be scorned by his wife for his late running council meetings.

The Anushiriwan would strut idly along the open balcony of his palace, overlooking the main city of Susa, pensive in thought. Serious trouble had not come to the Empire in hundreds of years - but there was a general unease bubbling under the surface, in all theatres of society. Ennui plagued the nation for the preceding years, life came, and life went with little to no upsets, for both good and bad.

This would not do, for the Shahanshah - something must be done, and so it would be decreed. Priests, Scribes, Satraps, Generals - a Great conclave would be called to present ideas to the King of Kings as to the ailments of his nation, and possible solutions to them.

Imperial Actions

Revitalization of Faith (1 AP) (Mod)

In an effort to entrench the Zoroastrian faith within the populace of the Empire, a massive effort is set to be prepared; a mass scribing of the Avesta and other tomes, so that every town, in every district, in every satrap of the Empire may have a copy of not only the Avesta, but the Torah, the Bhagavad Gita, and a host of other scriptures, from Zunist faiths to Tengriic. Specifically absent however, is the Quran and the Bible.

The Postage Act (1 AP) (Mod)

Noting the disconnect that the citizens, bureaucrats and general peoples of the Empire were having, the Imperial Domestic Council have announced a system by which the centuries old postal system could be revitalized. New post stations are slated to be constructed over the next five or so years at pre-calculated distances across the Empire, to ensure speedy and standard delivery of information in all directions.

The Lydian Charter (Preparation)

Several large Persian interests in the Heartland come together to form a charter - with state support, to gather large numbers of disenfranchised urban and rural populations, and send them to form new settlements on the border of Judea.

Inland, that is where the Tyrannos was. He was scouting vineyards, hoping to invest the republic’s funds into a few to help the economy flourish. This part of Athens was beautiful, swaths of green fields covered the landscape and a nicely made house could be seen every now and then. The slaves worked the fields with care, for they knew the punishment if they don’t.

Already Denys found himself dozens of promising winemakers eager to have the Tyrannos himself invest in them. I mean who wouldn’t? For the economy was flourishing and it is predicted that it will continue to flourish. Trade within Greece has increased exponentially, and the Tyrannos was now looking to foreign states to make trade deals with.

Yes indeed, Denys thought to himself, This shall be a prosperous time in Athen’s history, a prosperous time the Gods have owed us. And so, with his business making wrapped up, he motions for his guards and departs. Off to the great capital once more!

Actions

While the Tyrannos was sightseeing, his council was busily at work. They had sent two envoys: one to trade with an eastern state, another sent westward to Italy. Not only this but once Denys reached Athens they set about creating the official documents and transferring the money to these vineyards.

RESTORING THE MACCABIAH

Spiritual and Secular Leader of the Kingdom of the Israelites, Mattityahu III had finally reconvene age-old Sanhedrinim, Maccabee tribunals, and priestly gatherings. Their purpose? Aiding a Kingdom-Wide restoration, not seen for near a century now. The lazy Kings of old had allowed Christianity to fester and develop into a tumor dividing the Kingdom and apostatizing Jews, all in exchange for little more than money and promises of peace.

Sanhedrin-GettyImages-91728330-5733700b3

A reformed Sanhedrin questions a Jewish apostate, mid-701.

The Maccabee high command began its own reformation as well, retraining the entirety of the military under old Maccabee tactics. Furthermore, with a Persian guarantee, Mattityahu eased into a full-out war against the "Hellenized" Jews. Sanhedrinim openly debated the status of apostate Jews in and around Jerusalem, allowing, or forcing, many who qualified to return to the Tribe to do so, and laying an expectation of following the conversion process to many others. Those so far removed they had neither Jewish parent nor Grandparent were separated. Some, the classical Christians and clergy, would be allowed to live in Jerusalem as the caretakers of pilgrims. Others, weak farmers, women, children, and families, would be told they had new housing arranged in the North, near old Phoenician territories starting around Acre.. But lastly, secular community leaders, warriors who refused to convert, and any otherwise dangerous men would be put to the sword.

1438223537.jpg

Mattityahu kills a Christian Warrior in training himself, just before Chanukah, 701.

Next came the diplomatic response. Firstly were the Worldwide Christians, for whom Mattityahu sought to engage with the Emperor, sending a dispatch to him which may recall the 5 thousand remaining Imperial Subjects and keep calm potential Christian Warriors in the North or South. More diplomatic envoys would arrive in At-Tafilah (along with a division of 1 thousand Maccabee Warriors to occupy the village and its area for several years in the name of clearing out bandits in the region. They would arrive with a letter giving the Tafilahan Imams permission to proselytize in the nearby Christian villages (though a rather significant amount of Kohenim would arrive with the Soldiers, likely to protect the soldiers themselves from proselytizing). An additional envoy would be sent to the Persian Emperor, asking for an embassy force to be stationed with the Maccabees in an effort to prepare for a broader campaign of eliminating "Hellenistic" Jews. Mattityahu also issues a major proclamation, promising free passage and safety to members of all faiths, so long as they refrain from proselytizing.

Tribes of the Vandals

2000px-Valknut.svg.png

Ruler: Beucad of Clan Theudegisklos, King of the Vandals

Capital: Luppla (Bernburg)

Trade Agreements: Magyars and the Saxons

Beucad made his way through the bustling tribal city of Luppla, often surmised as the pride of the Vandal people. He reflected on the history of his people and his triumphs but despite this could not shake the feeling that what he sought to witness would not come to fruition within his lifetime. Centuries before, the ancestors of the Vandalic Kingdom had been ravaged by Hunic incursions into Germania which led the Vandals to being nearly exterminated as Germanic refugees were refused passage into the Empire's lands. However, throughout the years the Vandals have managed to survive within the outskirts of Imperial Germania and their resentment towards the Empire swelled into frequent raids. With the unfortunate Great Dying, the Germanic playing field had been wiped clean for the Vandals and their Chief, Beucad, was quickly able to conquer many of the surrounding tribes and add them to his numbers.

He walked past the sacred pine near the center of the city, a towering tree with the likeness of Wodanaz carved into it's bark, and began his way up the stone steps towards the Temple of Teiwaz. The Temple was built sometime after the Vandals resigned their Arian practices during the Hunnic Wars and it's wooden walls stretched high above the rest of the city atop a man-made hill. Entering the Temple, Beucad was enticed by the smell of frankincense and a fair woman dressed in fair white linen addressed him as he entered, "It has been written in the Futhorc that you would seek me out, good King. You seek the blessing of the God of the Hanged, I presume?" He didn't know how, but it always seemed as if the woman was one step ahead of him, and if it weren't with for her charm he wouldn't be as friendly with her. Beucad nodded before opening his mouth, "Indeed I do, High Priestess. I must soon stand before the Thing and convince my people to approve the raiding of the Danish land where the Rhenus meets the sea." The High Priestess, Alwina, simply gave a small nod and motioned for the King to follow her through several more doors before they exited into the Temple's courtyard.

There, Beucad found a young Frankish boy tied down to a large marble column, weathered in age. Behind the column the leaves of a young fir poked out and made it's presence known. Several other priestesses after the High Priestess entered the courtyard, carving runes into the boy's chest with ceremonial knives while his muffled pleas for help were drowned out by the sound of a large deerskin drum. As the priestesses wiped the blood from the boy's chest, Beucad could make out the meaning of the runes, 'Christ's Faithful'. The King knew he didn't have the right to deny Teiwaz his sacrifice, so he made no objection. Alwina turned her attention to Beucad and spoke with her usual feminine charm, "Good King, if you seek the blessing of Teiwaz, you must plunge your sword through the boy's heart."

Cathal was on a voyage to the Skellig Islands looking for a spot to authorize the construction of a Christian monastery with a group of monks for the growing number of Christians in Ireland which have been living peacefully with the pagans as each lives their own lives not hurting anybody. After awhile of climbing and making good progress up the bigger of the two peaks the monks got to a spot about 160 meters above the sea when they stopped and declared this spot to be sacred and that the monastery will be there.

In other news the Celtic pagans in Limerick are getting together to write down all about their Gods and their beliefs and sacred spots. As well as the creation story they believe as a way to preserve that forever.
