Le Empire Du Soleil

The Empire of the Sun

The Rising Sun of the West, A.D. 701

Charles sat upon one of the many window sills throughout the Imperial Palace; overlooking the Capital of his Empire, he’d appear to be brooding, his thoughts clouded by discontent. From a young age, Charles was already of the understanding that the Empire he was born into was decrepit and corrupted, serving to fuel his discontent. The young monarch was a seeker of knowledge primarily, more interested in old tomes and the likes, one could consider him an erudite; but, just like how one’s duty to the nation is absolute, Charles finds himself with the monumental task of ensuring his Empire survives.

With a huff and an exasperated sigh, the Emperor reached over to the table nearest to him, taking a hold of a hefty book, he’d flip to the latest page he was on, hoping to end his tumultuous night as Emperor on a good note with some reading:

THE RISE OF AN EMPIRE,

HIS EXCELLENCY, SCRIBE OF THE EMPIRE, CAROLII, A.D 235

The rise of this Gallic Empire of ours is a tremendous tale; from the shores of what is known to us now as Calais, came into the light a meager tribe. Wherefrom these people came, we can only speculate, the strongest hypothesis was that they were molded from a piece of the Sun by the Holy Spirit itself. Whatever the case, through oratory knowledge passed through generations, we know of their plight and defeat at the hands of the Batavi, a tribe of Germanic folk that were pushed into France by a burgeoning tribe in their own region.

The Sali-Frankii , one of this Empire’s most staple culture along with our primary Gaulic roots, were the cause of our displacement at the time. They saw within us and the Batavi tremendous wealth ready for the picking and so proceeded to invade, but bit into more than they could chew. Our tribe was pushed into the Parisii territory, but instead of initiating a conflict, the Parisii welcomed us and understood our plight. With the strength of the two tribes combined, it was enough for the Batavi to fold, falling into the Confederation of the people.

Vicious war broke out between the newly assembled tribes against the Frankii, both sides fought one another fiercely but in a spectacular stroke of faith, the Confederation was able to encircle and capture the bulk of the Frankii. Peace soon ensued, the terms dictating that the disgruntled Frankii people be adopted into the growing Confederation; the Capital was soon decided, the untouched village of the Parisii served to be the future sight of our current Imperial Capital, Paris.

A Council of the People soon was established amongst the tribes, with elections being held every decade to decide from which tribe a leader would hail from. This system at its core was flawed, and our people at the time, were of this realization. They be------

The Emperor’s attention snapped to his chamber’s doorway, a herald was held present by his Imperial Brigadier of the Sun. Through a brief exchange of words, it was made clear that his dear friend and Marshal, Charles Martel had pushed through deep into enemy territory of the Iberian Rebellion and begun the siege of a key stronghold, Murcia. Expecting the City to fall in months, the Emperor appeared to be content, for the rebellion would be crippled greatly with the loss of this city.

He quickly rearranged himself, dismissing those present and speeds off to the Imperial War-Chamber, knowing that there was no doubt his tacticians would be working on modifying the Iberian War-plans with this latest bit of information.

Imperial Actions

The Iberian Push

1st Imperial Battle-Group ‘Martel’

Taking the Rebel Empire completely off-guard with the Imperial Invasion, Charles Martel’s Army makes tremendous progress into the fertile valleys of southern Iberia, laying siege to the nearest rebel city,  Murcia.

An ultimatum is sent to the people of Murcia, promising that if they fold and return to Imperial Authority their lives are to be spared, and are granted tax exemption for the following five years. Rebel soldiers within the City are also addressed by the Marshal, instructing them of the benefits of defecting, most primarily the double wage they would receive and the shortening of their service time for retirement. Charles Martel plays heavily on the aspect that the civil war is a brother versus brother war, and wishes for such petty affairs to cease.

Siege of the City would commence immediately with a full concentrated barrage of artillery fire on various key points. The cavalry attached to the Martellian army would be delegated to the maintaining of order along the Highways while cohorts of light infantry forage around Murcia gathering more supplies and keeping lookout for any enemy divisions in the vicinity.

With the realization that the Kingdom of Leon may take advantage of the concentrated Imperial Assault into its southern neighbor, His Imperial Majesty makes the call of assembling another army to Iberia, though not of the same expertise as Martel’s own army, it will serve to be a good buffer between Leon and Imperial Territory if they ever decide to attack.

The Pontifical Issue Regarding the State of Yerushalayim

Growing concern lay present in the east of Christendom; though the Empire had to relinquish control of Judea when the Jews successfully revolted, the Empire at the time saw no need to continue hostile relation with the far-off Judea, and despite religious differences, pursued cordial relations. Though now, the Christian minority within Judea buzzed with hostility towards their Jewish overlords, by some forces unknown, they took up arms against Yerushalayim.

Not wishing the Holy Capital of All Christendom be laid to waste by a civil war, the Emperor and the Conclave of Cardinals decreed that Christians within Judea be returned to proper Christian lands and that a safe pilgrim's path to Jerusalem be established at a later date. Little is known on the status of the discussions as of this time, but one can hope that the most Holiest Site on the world be not barred access to the faithful of Christendom.

Securing the Empire

Key political opposition Senators were spectacularly seized in His Imperial Majesty retaking of political power within the government. Knowing full well the taboo that it was killing Senators of the Patrician Class, the Emperor ordered all their financial assets seized and banished them from their positions, now labelled as disgraced noblemen of no political stature; such a punishment transfer onto the next generation thrice, offsprings of the disgraced politicians will be unable to take up office. A lucky result for slothful traitors to the state.

In order to further solidify control and situational knowledge within various border provinces, a chain of outposts begin construction throughout key-points on the Rhine River defense line. Tasked with the preliminary investigation of foreign troop movement on the other side of the Rhine, they are then instructed to send reports back into the heartlander by utilizing the newly established courier system. Though, to the more keen of eye, some might notice that this establishment is but a precursor into something much more ambitious and outlandish.

In order for the Emperor to better issue his missives, His Imperial Majesty as seen it fit to reorganize the Cursi Publicii, a state-owned courier system designated with the speedy delivery of all things mail. In order to aid such an initiative, a series of checkpoints throughout the Empire have been reconstructed to serve as key points for couriers to travel through while making their way about. The Imperial Highways of Francia and Iberia no doubt greatly assisting mail from be delivering on time.

In response to the potential of His Imperial Authority being challenged, the Emperor does hereby see it fit to re-establish the Order Espion under his direct oversight. Agents picked top of their class and skill and organized and dispatched throughout various fringe provinces. A division is sent specifically to Iberia to investigate any potential threats.

Consequently to these reforms of interior affairs, more Imperial diplomats are dispatched to various nations on close to their borders, most notably excluding the Danish-held Flanders province. Their nature unknown, but one could most likely be able to piece the puzzle together when regarding Iberia into the picture.

Chief Laszlo examining the plunder from a near by town

The site to behold in the mountain town was not a pretty one. Dead bodies of women, and slaughtered men lay shamelessly on the ground, their throats severed, and a stench of charred wood, rotten bodies, and alcohol celebrating their plunder. A mere couple hours ago, however, the scene was much different. Women and children were playing  amongst themselves, and the men were tending to the farms. All would have changed when they heard the thundering roar of hundreds of hooves growing increasingly louder, as everyone in the region recognized the sound, and what came of it. Hundreds of men on horseback immediately swarmed the village, unloading a few shots off their woden bows before dismounting off their steeds, and continuing on foot. The raiders had made quick work of the village, and what remained was the spoils, which every man wanted their share of. Normally, they would distribute their plunder evenly, the most going to the one with the most heads, the one with the least recieving the least valuable. However, the Chief Laszlo was arriving, thus, the anxious raiders would have to stretch their patience.

The soldiers all stopped picking up whatever they could find off the ground and in tents and huts when the large white steed of the Chief proceeded through the village, surveying his surrondings. His garments and armour were not clean, meaning he had engaged in combat himself, and this was confrmed by the long caravan of empty horses carrying women, children, and bags full of spoils.

Upon reaching the center of the camp, where the bulk of the loot has been piled, the Chief would dismount, and circle the pile, kicking open bags, and opening coffers, and examining the women and children. The men would slowly gather around the pile, eager to recieve their cut.

“You men have done good work her, the Gods would be proud.” Hed say, raising an arm of a girl who would shoot the chief and angry look, to which the warriors would meet with cheers and laughter. “This will not be your lost, by the time your done, you will be rich with plunder.” He would say, and ascend his horse again. “Distribute it evenly, do whatever you want with the women, save one, which you will let go, I will leave it for you lot to decide.”

He would ride slowly to the entrance to the camp, before turning around and addressing the entirety of it: “Continue your conquest and pillage, and you will be rewarded greatly in the afterlife.” With that hed gallop off, to raid and destroy another poor slavic town.

Another year has passed

A pair of boots crunches over the hardened terrain, footprints only tracked through a thin layer of snow that slowly continues to accumulate. The silence is interrupted as a door creaks open and the man enters. The room was lit only by a small crackling fire “Any news?”. The second figure nodded his head “Everything is in place” wind whistled through the houses thin walls, a short conversation followed the statement before the first figure cuts it short “Enough talk, now we begin”

Tensions between the Sea Kings has erupted. Across the Northern world, swords are forged, men are trained, boats are constructed, and fortresses are made ready for war. 701 saw seizure of Norwegian lands at Copenhagen and in Frisia. Vandal forces lay waste to lands along the Rhine and Dumnonia expands their sphere of control even further across the British Isles. A Phyricc victory at Ruthin for Swedish and Danish forces marks the end of the conflicts in the North for the rest of the year.

The Border of Macedon and Epirus

The army marched passed eagerly into Epirote territory, with Antiochos at its head.  His horse was bred in Thessaly, as all the best horses of Greece were. It was on these horses he would set his cavalry, and on these horses he would have his victory.

There were some among his army to be sure, and even among his officer staff who might be unsure of what they were doing.  The League of Olynthus had been established by the strength of Macedonian convictions, to defend Greece. So why were they attacking their fellow Greeks?  The answer was simply money. Money that would be better spent in the Macedonian treasury was being wasted in the Epirote pursuits. And besides all that, the mother of that great man, Alexander, was an Epirote Princess.

The land was his by right.

Argead blood would prevail, and when the dust settled he would be Basileus of Macedon and Epirus both, and stand above the rest of Greece.  Oh, they were his friends to be sure. Even that Justinian was quite alright when he got to be known… But dominance of the Greeks should always be the right of Alexander’s blood.  There was no other option.

The Epirotes would be the ones to learn this.  He had deliberately left them out of the League’s drafting, lest he pull his support and let it fall to tatters.  The Basileus in Byzantium agreed to let his invasion be. Epirus could not and would not stand against the full might of Macedon.  They could surrender or they could die, and in the end they would be joined to the Basileus.

Yngling Dynasty

For two years now the various retinues of the north have been assembling in Sweden. The fight at Copenhagen had been a stunning success. The Wolfskins had performed admirably in the fight. The Norwegians of course fought with ferocity and valor. But in a last ditch effort they had tried to raze the city. It was in poor taste to King Dag and his lords. Something that troubled him. And then news of the battle of Ruthin had arrived. Dag showed the proper solemnity, but knew it was inconsequential. The Norwegians were just as hurt, and couldn't call banners as fast. So for now he was finally able to turn his attention to the true front.

Two years of massing had led to a proper Swedish war host. They had been hoarding wagons, and paying merchants to establish trade routes. The military camp resembled a small town. And a good train of followers accompanied them. A proper army needed it's servants, laundresses, blacksmiths, and a myriad of other non combative rolls. Their allies had arrived at the end of the year, and they were finally ready. The light cavalry and infantry are issued forth. They are to scout ahead and guard the main armies flanks. The proper column will head in a cautiously defensive formation, ready to guard the supply wagons. They will attempt to locate the Norwegian border army and force an engagement. The Swede's will attempt to do this maneuvering in the bottleneck between lake and sea. They will not as easily walk into a ambush, using their light units and cautiously advancing along main roads.

The grand Reaver fleet will follow the armies progress on the coast. They will seek out the Norwegian navy, and use their numbers. Several Drakkar are tasked to head further out into the ocean. This would be a safe guard against any long ranged Norwegian fleet operations. Other movements are kept concealed, as Sweden rises to it's full military reach.

THE PRINCIPALITY OF WALES

The South

Prince Lewys stood before the remaining men of the Siege of Gwent. He had surrendered, even if they had not had many loses. It was the potential for bloodspill that he feared. He now stood before his men, the ones he had surrendered to protect.

“We know what we must do. My brother presents a threat to our stability. He will continue to provoke conflict. We have to ride North.” Lewys declared. He jumped up to his horse, and with the survivors of Gwent he rode north to the Fort of Pennal.

The North

King Derec raced around the encampment surrounded the Fort of Pennal. He worried, he had expected news from Gwent long ago. A victory was what he hoped for, and he felt great joy when he saw Lewys and his men ride up. The war would yet continue.

“Brother.” Lewys greeted, slipping off of his horse as he parked it right in front of him. “Your reign has come to an end.”

Derec blinked, he was confused, and he felt threatened. “What do you mean, Lewys?”

“You sent your people into bloodshed for no reason. You’re no King.” He stated, glancing around to the armies surrounding them both. “Derec is no King. He wants you all to die to protect his own petty interests… I, Prince Lewys, surrendered to King Geraint of Dumnonia. He declared me High Prince of Wales, the true ruler of Wales.”

“But I am the King!” Derec barked, he was filled with rage and charged at Lewys. He did not get far, for after three or four steps an arrow struck him true in the chest. The King crumbled to the ground, the Prince knelt by him, muttering an apology. The High Prince then rose, “Long live the Principality! Under Dumnonia we will prosper!”

"The Greek States have banded together against us! And now Epirus is being invaded by the Macedonians. This can only mean one thing! They plan to use the harbours of Epirus to attack Italy itself! I advise intervention senators." A senator shouted across the room.

"That is wild talk, they declared their intent, the league is only defensive!" Another shouted back to the first speaker.

"Senators, please!" Quintus cried out to the men present. "We must try to diplomatically dismantle this alliance, it is clear by their invasion of Epirus that Macedon desires true hegemony over all Greeks. Our diplomats can attempt to garner the smaller states like Athens and Ionia to our side. Byzantium has expressed wishes of an alliance in a past, the Republic can still survive!" The Consul reassured the Senate.

"But we must be ready, our armies must be ready. And we need allies, therefore I suggest we send an emissary to the Kingdom of Leon in Iberia. Forts must be built in the Genoan pass, and more troops raised. Manius, I hope you will share my views. Trade shall be prioritised as usual."

"Though I would like to bring up another matter, we must reform the republic into the Roman Republic, like it was of old. Though we share many similar qualities, for now the only change will be name. Roma Invicta!" At those words the Senators cheered in unision.

Tribes of the Vandals

2000px-Valknut.svg.png

Ruler: Beucad of Clan Theudegisklos, King of the Vandals

Capital: Luppla (Bernburg)

Trade Agreements: Magyars and the Saxons

Beucad made his way through the burgeoning city of Luppla, the sound of a loud horn awakening him from sleep and beckoning him to the capital's entryway. Trekking down the main path, Beucad examined the many villagers as they stood in front of their doors, holding back anticipation for what the horn might mean. Through Luppla's entrance, nothing more than a large, stone archway, the tribal king caught sight of the large raiding party, drinking and splitting up their loot among themselves. At the party's head, stood War Chief Rikiar, a long held close friend of King Beucad. The man beckoned Beucad forth with his hand, "Come, friend! We will arrange your cut from the plunder. I believe there is still quite some gold left unclaimed." The chief talked with a rough voice, offering his king a smile and a pat on the back as Beucad approached him. "Oh, you shouldn't worry about it, Rikiar. Just have what's left from the hoard taken up to the longhouse and given to Melle. She's been growing a bit distant, and some gold ought to cheer her up." The king looks out over the four hundred or so men as they travel up into the city, carrying armfuls of precious metals to their families, "How many did we lose, Rikiar?" The war chief simply gave a shrug as he responded, "'Bout thirty. Had to deal with a small danish force harassing us on our way back to the Rhemus. Weren't too hard to shake off of our tail." Beucad simply offers a silent nod before retreating back into the city limits.

702 A.D.  - Turn 3

While soldiers clash with weapons just north of the Kingdom, a great battle of words rages in the halls of King Æthelred. Local nobles are outraged at King’s policy of “appeasement” towards the sea kings occupying English land. Some threaten to pull support from the King while current policies stand.  Years of bitter fighting and lost sons have made these noble men bitter and lustful for revenge. At last the King stands up. “We shall avenge our fallen kin on the western shores. They shall not have died in vain.  RAISE THE LEVIES,” booms the King. Mercian armies take to the west.

Ruler: Basileus Attalus the Second of the Nicator dynasty (Age 24)

Consort: Basilis Philia of Cyprus (Age 21)

Issue: None

Capital: Pergamon

Cities: Attalya

Attalus bit his lip as his councillors continued to debate and argue over the current situation, the Basileus remaining silent and seemingly unaware of the men bickering around him as he sat there in deep thought.  News had just reached them of the of Macedon's march into northern Epirus, and while the invasion itself was no surprise or issue it brought about debates over the Kingdom’s own growth. With both their Macedonian and Byzantine allies conquering new lands, many within the Basileus’ court had come to the conclusion that Ionia must follow to avoid being overshadowed by its allies, yet none could agree on how. His advisors were split fairly in half, with one side advocating for peaceful expansion in the east with more focus being put on economic strength and the other side pushing for war in the West, most considering a war against Italy alongside the rest of the Olynthus League to claim part of Magna Graecia. A few were even mad enough to suggest the possibility of war with his Greek allies, stating that disunity among them would follow and in the chaos Hegemony could be achieved. Of course none of these options were acceptable, as none truly would show the power of Ionia. No, he had thought to himself as he raised a hand, his councillors beginning to quiet down with only a few of the most stubborn mummering to themselves. Attalus took a deep breath as the room finally went quiet, placing his palms on the edge of the tabe as he stood himself up and spoke. “While all of your opinions on the matter have been considered, I have come to the decision that none of them are the best for the advancement of our Kingdom.” he’d pause, frowning as he watched nearly all his councillors begin to grumble, waiting until they had quieted down again before speaking. “No, there is one clear option that we have all missed, one that would not only prove our strength but also bring pride back to our people. Of course we will need to thoroughly prepare to achieve this, and the investments we already have in progress will be key in all of this.” He’d pause once more, the men assembled still obviously frustrated and confused but seemingly more intent on listening. Attalus would continue on from there, more confident than before as he laid out the general plan including any preparations or agreements needing to be made. The meeting ended up lasting for several hours, with details being worked out among the council and the groundwork for the plan being set.

By the time Attalus had dismissed them the sun had nearly already set, bright orange and pink colours dancing and twirling in the horizon past the royal palace. While much work was still required, and there would still be god knows how many more discussions and debates over it, at least a decision was made and a path to glory for Ionia was clear. He winced as he neared his chambers, hearing his wife stirring in the room, shattering any hopes he had of avoiding her wrath and enjoying a nice peaceful night. Surprisingly though, as he entered the room apologizing for missing their meal she merely sighed and stepped toward him, embracing her husband. He raised a brow, wondering what madness had come over his dearest to lead her to this, but his curiosity was not answer but only grew as she began to weep into his chest. Worried, he grabbed his normally stoic wife by her shoulders and pushed her away slightly frantically trying to search her eyes as she glared down at her feet. “What in God’s name has overcome you Philia? Are you sick? Have you gone mad? Please answer me my love… please” he’d plead in desperation, assuming the worst, but he was only met with an odd and seemingly out of place laughter, her face rising to meet his with a small smile strung across her face and a small shake of her head. “You misunderstand my dearest husband… I am finally with child” she’d say gleefully, moving to embrace him again as he stood there motionless and awestruck.
