L’Empire Du Soleil

The Empire of the Sun

The Wrath of the Sun, A.D. 703

The Emperor mused over the reports flooding in from the Iberian Peninsula, he already had plans set into motion after the fall of upstart General’s Empire. He had sent orders to the two Imperial Battle-Groups in Iberia to continue the invasion westward, meaning the resuming of hostility between the Empire and the Kingdoms there.

The news from Iberia was soon followed by reports from the East. The Invasion of Italy had faced some sort of complication that the Emperor had difficulties sorting out; Imperial Agents in the area report infighting between the Greek City States, which led to the collapse of the southern invasion force. Ambassadors in Byzantium are tasked with uncovering the issues that unfolded in Italy.

To his North, the Emperor was content in the affairs being carried out. He had left the Isles in good terms, not bothering to meddle in their hegemony any further. The expulsion of the Sea-Kings from old Imperial Territory had left him a bit more content than usual.

The Emperor sighed, clapping his hands together once. Through diligence and sensibility, he had managed to drag his Empire back from the brink of destruction, now he must stabilize it.

Imperial Actions

Reclaiming the Peninsula

1st Imperial Battle-Group ‘Martel’ & 2nd Battle-Group ‘Louis’

Charles Martel’s Battle-Group was tasked by the Emperor to lay waste to the Kingdom of Leon and seek out its capitulation. Therefore, the Marshal has seen it fit to carve his way into the Kingdom, attempting to lay siege to the closest enemy stronghold.

In response to the Emperor’s commands, the Governor of Aquitaine, Louis, sets out from the recently conquered Grenada, continuing to follow the Iberian Coastline - if unopposed, the Imperial Battle-Group would lay siege to the nearest Andalusian City; they’d follow the same pattern that was taken when Grenada was besieged, burning the countryside but sparring the population, corralling them towards the major enemy stronghold in the region.

THE KINGDOM OF DUMNONIA

The Great War had ended quicker than expected. Within weeks, the Albonic Alliance had purged the Danes and Swedes from their territories. All that remained was a handful of troops in the northernmost provinces.

Geraint of Dumnonia got there first, his armies looked upon the Swedes hastily constructed palisades. The Sea Kings were outnumbered by far - they would not win this fight. The Dumnonii began to approach the walls, but as they did a piece of white cloth was thrown from the battlements. And sure enough a rider and his guard came trailing along.

VEyORPjXmgYfZlKLTdqnxjKTARtUXbtNwlYqNLAyvz8D5-OPORUZzMPSWyHD-lA_FUtG-YpY0LSxTydH9VPKe1t6VQ-iblPZCnic435FLya6LJjoVRTL0FpQNk0GyeqAC9lp-TQE

“There need not be bloodshed.” a voice boomed from the riders, behind his thick visor, “We will depart these lands. None of your men nor mine shall have to die.”

King Geraint looked taken aback, he darted his gaze towards his own outriders. “For what? What are your terms, Norse?”

“Come within my hall, we shall talk more -- here.” he shoved forward a little boy, “This is one of my new Jarls - his father was slain in Bangor. Take him for a guarantee of your safety.”

And so the two made for the great hall of Eforwich. Within the dimly lit room, an agreement was signed.

The Battle of Brundisium ended the only way something of that calibre could - a slaughter. Greek slew Greek, and cousin slew cousin. The Byzantines had killed them all. No survivors remained.

The Republic had been committed to defending its borders, to prevent foreign incursions. It did not hate the Greeks, no malice could be found between the two closely linked people’s. Only silence fell as the news of the butchery arrived in the Senate. No words were spoken, nothing needed to be said. Regardless of petty alliances and grievances, these events shook the Republic to the very core.

At last, the Consul spoke, his voice shattering the silence like glass. “They will pay now. They will pay with their blood. They will watch as their cities burn to the ground. Rome does not forget, and Rome does not forgive.

...The Byzantines and the Venetians fight for greed. They fight for power. The Basileus would ally betray his own kin for wealth, and see his land destroyed out of his own blindness.” he looked to them all, into the eyes of each and every Senator. His grey eyes cast upon them without empathy.

From the back benches a figure stood, he was old and feeble. His face portrayed one who had seen a great deal, lived a great lot, seen many a tragedy. He pointed a boney finger at the Consul.

“I move that Manius Lucceius Trenico be made emergency Dictator of Rome, and granted absolute power until this crisis is over.”

The Censor hit his staff to the marbled floor. “All those in favour..?”

The Consul Quintus remained silent, before giving his support with a flick of his hand.

They began to rise, Senator by Senator - until the hall was filled with standing men...

“...The vote is carried.. Unanimously.” he declared, bashing his rod once more to the floor.

The Senators began to clap, chanting quietly, Roma Invicta.. Roma Invicta… Roma Invicta...

The voices became louder, and feet began pounding upon the surface of the hall. Roma Invicta... Roma Invicta...

“ROMA INVICTA.”

Silence shook the Senate-Hall, then finally the new Dictator spoke.

“It is with great reluctance that I have agreed to this calling… I love Democracy, I love the Republic!” To that many Senators clapped.

“The power you give me, I will lay down when this war has ended. And as my first act with this new Authority, is to re-establish the grand legions of our past, and their support units. These new soldiers are to drafted exclusively from the Craftsmen of Rome, and are to be drilled for discipline.”

The sky shook with thunder and lighting. Rain poured upon the deck as waves crashed against the bow of the ship. Men scrambled across the deck, manning positions and tying ropes. With each wave the ship shook more and more. The red and orange flag snapped & cracked as the man looked up to the heavens, another bolt of lighting split the sky. The man grimaced, the bolt was shortly accompanied by a blast of thunder that rocked the men to their core. In the distance, a wave smashed against the broadside of another vessel.. Sealing its fate. Perhaps the voyage was doomed as everyone had told him.

A Shore of Fire & Blood

Bodies were strewn across the shoreline, pikes & flags planted in the sand. Bodies not piled at the site of the battle began to drift out to sea. The remnants of Greek fire crackled and burned on the beach and waves alike. Here a great battle was fought, where the treachery that leads to such a tragedy lies.. Is up for debate.

___________________________________________________________

The remnants of what was once a small village still burned as the man approached slowly.

The bodies lay where they fell throughout the streets and alleyways. One of the bodies, not like the others began to stir. Its helmeted head looked up to the man as it slowly rose, dragging its blade in the dirt behind it. Many arrows protruded from the figure, blood dripped from the bottom of the full helm. The words that sounded from the figure were either incomprehensible, or in a language unknown to the man. The figure attempted to raise its blade before it stumbled over, falling onto its back. Coughs and hacks escaped from the figure as it slowly suffocated on its own blood, suddenly all was still.

The air was filled with smoke.. And blood

The once vast Camp on the Shores of Southern Italy is void of life. The bodies of 16,000 Greeks lay scattered, among them the Kings of Ionia, and Macedon. The League plotted to Betray Venice just a few hours ago, however Ser Lukas commander of the Byzantine men turned on his Greek brothers and put them to the sword. The crows now feast on the dead, however this is only the start of the war.

Justinian still couldn’t believe the news, “So it Begins. . .” he mutters Lukas words before he turned on his allies. The leagues combined army was nearly wiped out and the Kings of his neighbors killed in a single Night. He orders ‘Noble’ Sir Lukas Veris to be imprisoned for his actions and plans for his execuaution are made.

Justinian address his people in a speech following Ser Luaks return and Ionia bending the knee,

“The war we have feared is here, Persia has taken control of Ionia. Now all of Greece lays open. We don’t deserve help from our brothers in Athens and Macedon after what Lukas did to them. We stand alone, against the might of an Empire, but we will not falter. We will push back the evil we’ve let grip Greece from the hells of which it came!”

Justinian orders letters sent to the other Greek states urging them to stand together against the threat of invasion from the East. “Ionia has already fallen,” he claims,  “Next will be all of Greece.” He denounces Lukas and claims he'll pay any price once Persia is defeated.

Justinian orders the defenses of his capital reinforced, and his newly made Varangian Guard is prepared to defend it with their lives.

He orders another unit of Varangian Guard, pikemen and Archers trained. Meanwhile Marcos leads an army of 4,000 Medium Infantry, 2,000 Pikemen, 2,000 light infantry, and 3,000 Bowmen into Ionia, Moving to release the lands of Persian influence. Words is spread  in Ionia that their once mighty nation has bent the knee to Persia, and the people should rise up to break their chains of oppression.

The Magyar Horde entering Crimean lands.

The water on the bank of the great river, as the Magyars called it, was particularly refreshing to Laszlo this day. The cold water providing a refreshing affect on the chieftains face as he splashed the clear water onto his face, small drips collecting on his many furs which laid upon his shoulders. As the water began to calm itself after the chief had interrupted its motionless state, the river turned into a mirror, upon which he had noticed a great congregation of mounted warriors behind him, some wearing many trinkets and furs, a statement of power, and prestige. Others rode bare chested and with a saddle. Others, almost completely naked, their bodies a canvass littered with incantations and art engraved into their skin with ink. “We are ready, Great one,” said a blond haired warrior, who wielded a particularly exquisite bow, and handed him the reigns to his recognizable white horse. The chief mounted, as he had done thousands of times before, however this time was different. He spared one moment to look behind him, to gaze upon what he had amassed. Thousands upon thousands of warriors upon their steeds, lingering patiently on top of them as the warriors all directed their view forward, awaiting the orders of their leader. It was at this moment where a old lady, wearing the horns of a deer and almost completely covered in furs,  the only part of her natural body visible was encased in ink, handed the chief a white, ivory horn. It was at this moment where he took the horn from her hands, and blasted it, a deep, low, and wholesome pitch resonating throughout the entire river valley.

The cries and screams of the warriors were quickly drowned out by the intense roar created by thousands of horses galloping.

Polyxene spent as much of her time mourning as preparing for the future.  It seemed as though those were the only two things she could do. Oh, she had not known Antiochos for extremely long to be sure.  But he had never treated her wrongly, and had given her Alexandros.

But that harpy Theophilia claimed the same.  Although he had stopped visiting her chambers before he had wed her, Antiochos had kept her as a lover and gotten her with child.  She had dared not approach the court while he was alive, but now that he was dead…

Worse still, there were some who ignored the illegitimate birth of the child in favor of his age and claimed that Antiochos, the bastard not her husband, was the true heir to the throne.  That she had named her bastard after her late lover… It infuriated Polyxene.

But for now at least, as Jason was awarded regency in Italy, he was more than happy to grant the widow of his brother the power in his absence.  She would be the one making the decisions in Macedon for the time being, which was a balm on the wound. So she spoke to everyone- Lysimachos, Herakleios, and Sosigenes.  The council. They informed her of their thoughts and then she made the decision. It was a good decision, and so far it had worked.

With a sigh, Polyxene laid her head to rest upon the pillow, wishing and aching for the husband she barely knew.

Herakleios thundered and raged within the council room of Macedon, while Lysimachos pursed his lips in silent agreement.  The two men, rivals with a burning passion, united in the death of their Basileus. “I raised that boy since he was eight.  Eight! He was going to be one of the finest kings the world had ever seen. By God, I will see Byzantium pay for this!”

“Perhaps a more measured response is in order,” Lysimachos countered weakly.  His heart was not truly in it.

Herakleios shook his head with deep reserves of anger. “They cut off his head and paraded it on a pike.  Not only does their man not have the honor to deliver the bodies of the slain home, his master thinks he has the right to give him justice himself.  No, justice belongs with us! It belongs to Macedon!”

Lysimachos took in a deep breath as he nodded in agreement.  “Aye.

The Kingdom of Venice

7EKZqHs.jpg

“The Roman Campaign was a catastrophy! Those idiotic greeks threw us into a position we cannot afford!”

“General Alonso is correct, we must sue for a white peace,” said a steady commander, taking a gulp of his wine glass.

“If we take a white peace, we gain nothing, and lose all our alliances,” snapped Admiral Furente.

“We should capital-”

“My son is DEAD.” The table trembled as Giovanni Anafesta slammed his meaty hand upon the table, spilling a wine glass onto the floor, where it shattered amongst the boots of his greatest men. “Your crown prince was murdered by a Roman dog, and you seek peace?” He pulled himself up, kicking back his chair. It ground along the stone floor horribly.

“We will have peace when Rome has paid for every drop of his blood spilled upon the dirt with a thousand men. Either Rome bends to our terms, or Rome burns.” He turned to Furente. “Take the fleet, set the Adriatic Italian coast to flames. Leave nothing but ash.”

With a flick of his hand, he dismissed the remaining men and turned to a paintain upon the wall of the council room. His son, in his prime, in full, glittering armor. His hands shook at his side and he stormed out of the room, slamming the door so hard that the walls shook.
