The Rise
(AKA, Mith's FRP)

The Altairean Empire--once a preeminent power, now withered beyond recognition. Amidst crumbling roads and eroded statues a great power once rose and dominated the known world. Having reached its zenith, instability, greed, corruption, plague, and invasion reduced its power to a petty nation of bureaucrats, generals, politicians, merchants, and an infant Emperor. All vie for influence in the dusty capital--their chaotic leadership guiding Altaire slowly toward oblivion.

You, however, are not some capital-bound citizen. You are a governor of an Imperial province with ambitions, goals, and desires that extend further than the next year.

After a thousand disasters and broken armies, the Altairean Empire has just barely held together in its west-most territories. Having lost the capital Neia, the Imperial Council and bureaucracy has relocated to the ancient capital and religious center of the Empire, Altaire. Plagues, banditry, pirates, and the erosion of infrastructure have drained the empire of citizens, resources, and coin. Now that peace has finally been secured, the citizens pray to their ancestors for stability and prosperity. Has the Nightmare Era come to an end, or is this the preamble for the next disaster to come? Only time will tell...

--------------------------------------------------------------

Choosing Your Province

There are twelve provinces to choose from, and all are in a uniquely terrible state. Ravaged by decades of corruption and poor management, they have finally stabilized in their stagnancy. With conditions the way they are, things can only get better (probably)!

All provinces - though they may be separated by mountains or sea - are all influenced by the same culture at base. The Altairean Empire is very clearly based on ancient Rome (specifically late-Rome), so keep that in mind as you build your provincial identity. I’ll give you plenty of creative license for it, but if I feel it veers a little too far from Roman-ish culture I’ll have to ask you to change it. I hope that doesn’t upset any RP purists!

The religion of Altaire (the one cultural totem I’ll actually describe in any detail) is that of ‘Neaism,’--an ancestor-worshipping faith that places importance on family and appeasing the spirits of the dead. All homes have small shrines to their deceased family, with long lists of names that go back centuries. Neai herself is considered the first ancestor of all Altaireans, and is therefore universally worshiped in temples and public shrines. Figures of great importance or achievement will often have their own public shrine if their deeds are worthy of it. The city of Altaire itself is a chaotic mess of religious edifices--some so old and decrepit the names of the ancestors can no longer be recognized. The dogged priests will give offerings to appease the nameless dead regardless, with rotting food, flowers, and burning incense creating a strange smell that most shrine-goers will find familiar wherever they travel. Practitioners of Neaism can be highly superstitious and see purpose in every tragedy and joy.

Also, keep in mind this excerpt from the timeline:

“The huge swathe of problems facing the empire turn out to be too daunting for Scipicus to contend with, thus he reorganizes the western holdings into a series of “provinces” controlled by his most loyal commanders and councillors.”

It has been 15-20 years since that decree. Your governor may still be the same loyal supporter from the last (adult) Emperor.

(I apologize for the state of this map. My current map-boy is currently working as a prostitute in Belgium, and can't fix his egregious errors)

1. Blightswamp

A disgusting, fetid, disease-ridden swamp. Only recently retaken from the Korvics, the wood in the swamp was far less useful than the scouts originally believed. Sparsely populated and dirt-poor, most of its current people only remain because they can’t afford to go anywhere else. Due to bureaucracy and stubbornness, the Imperial Council refused to abandon it, and handed it off to some unlucky governor.
Population:
300,000 citizens
Engineering Level:
Tier 2
Resources:
1x Tier 1 Lumberyard
25AP in farmlands
25AP in mercantile district
Miscellaneous:

A large abandoned town wiped out by disease, and a stronghold for death-cult activity during the great plague.
Unusual white stone formations that vaguely resemble ruins.
Imperial Forces Present:
2000 Imperial Soldiers, housed within 4 wooden forts.

2. The Blackwoods

Dark, eerie forests, with excellent lumber and wary people. Like Blightswamp, it was only recently retaken from the Korvics and now serves as the primary source of wood for warships. However, the thick canopy hides frightening secrets. Peasants are known to disappear in the thick fog, and some lakeside farms are found suspiciously abandoned--their former occupants nowhere to be seen... Population:
450,000 citizens
Engineering Level:
Tier 2
Resources:
2x Tier 1 Lumber-yards
50AP in farmlands
Miscellaneous:
Things in the woods, perhaps?
Imperial Forces Present:
3000 Imperial soldiers, housed within 2 stone forts.

3. The Gray Coast

Cold, windy coastlines with rocky beaches and craggy gray hills. Known for its bleak appearance and huge sources of iron, the Gray Coast is otherwise of little note. Despite its lackluster appearance, the area is a favorite spot for Korvic sea raids from the nearby islands, which encourages the Imperial army to have a large presence in the area.

Population:
450,000 citizens
Engineering Level:

Tier 2
Resources:
2x Tier 2 Mines (iron)
25AP in farmlands
Imperial Forces Present:

Headquarters for the Second and Third Legion. 10,000 soldiers are housed within two stone fortresses, a stone fort, and a wooden fort.

4. Riviera

The cultural and economic heartland beyond the capital. The province of wine, art, and adultery, Riviera is the land of the wealthy provincial elite. Rolling, green hills are covered with countless ancient vineyards and the wealth of centuries is on display to any visitor. Though the place is starting to look terribly dilapidated, as there are no experts who can repair the myriad of crumbling monuments.
Population:
750,000 citizens
Engineering Level:

Tier 1
Resources:
1x tier 1 luxury manufactory (wine)
75AP in mercantile districts
100AP in Ports
Miscellaneous:
Unusual white stone formations that vaguely resemble ruins.
Imperial Forces Present:
4500 Imperial soldiers, quartered in three stone forts.

5. Annor’s Crossroads

Flat, grassy valleys surrounded by mountains, with a well-traveled highway cutting through it. Notable for having nothing to do with King Annor, the crossroads have been a centre-point in overland trade since the empire’s height. Though its expertise and grandeur diminished significantly during the Nightmare Era, the greatest armourers and weaponsmiths outside the capital make their home here.
Population:
600,000 citizens
Engineering Level:

Tier 2
Resources:
50AP in mercantile districts
Tier 3 Military Foundry
Imperial Forces Present:
2500 Imperial soldiers, quartered in one stone fort, and two wooden forts. 100 handgunners.

6. Royal Highlands

A mountainous region home to a number of beautiful and rare minerals popular among aristocrats and the well-to-do. The area is mostly known for having the only Sorcerer's Academy outside the capital. The province has never been a wealthy one, though, and specialists have always shied away from the lonely peaks.

Population:
500,000 citizens
Engineering Level:

Tier 1
Resources:
1x Luxury Resource (gemstones)
25AP in Mercantile District
Tier 2 Sorcerer Academy
Miscellaneous:
Two ruined ports abandoned during the Nightmare Era.
Imperial Forces Present:
1500 Imperial soldiers quartered within three wooden forts.

7. Aulus’ March

A mountainous region that suffered greatly during the barbarous Korvic invasions, and is heavily fortified as a result. Korvic raids are common, and the mountain paths are covered in abandoned huts and villages. Though it has little in the way of natural resources, the port and iron mine provide a small income for the impoverished locals. The most notable aspects of this province are the unique defences, and the headquarters of the famous First Fleet.
Population:
550,000 citizens
Engineering Level:

Tier 2

Resources:

50AP in port.

1x tier 1 mine (iron)

Imperial Forces Present:

Headquarters for the First, Fourth, and Fifth Legion, and the Headquarters for the First Fleet. 15,000 soldiers spread between Aulus Citadel and two fortresses. 1 quadrireme, 6 triremes, 9 biremes, and 5 galleys.

8. Plains of Farlus

Very plain, with horses and farms being the most prominent source of wealth. Every now and then some lucky farmer plows one of the many unusual hills that dot the landscape and accidentally break into a prehistoric tomb. Collectors prize the trinkets from here, but sorcerers always have legal right to seize them if they deem them to have magical properties. Other than a thriving black-market in ancient trinkets, little else is of note.

Population:
450,000 citizens
Engineering Level:

Tier 1
Resources:
1x tier 1 Horse Breeder
50AP in farmlands.
Sorcerers.
Miscellaneous:
Strange mounds on the planes, possibly brimming with treasure. Possibly.

A large abandoned town wiped out by disease and a stronghold for death-cult activity during the great plague.
Imperial Forces Present:
1000 Imperial soldiers quartered in two wooden forts.

9. Island of Salathai

Fiercely independent and often instigating independence movements around the empire. Conquered bloodlessly centuries ago the Salathai has never truly been subjugated, and uprisings are common as a result. With the second largest port in the Azure sea, the Island is the headquarters of the dilapidated and poorly disciplined Fourth Fleet. The island lost much of its industrial capabilities during the Nightmare Era, and is only now recovering.
Population:

500,000 citizens
Engineering Level:
Tier 2
Resources:
25AP in farmlands
25AP in mercantile district
50AP in port
Miscellaneous:

Imperial Forces Present:

4000 Imperial Soldiers quartered in 2 stone forts and 2 wooden forts. Fourth Fleet headquarters with 4 Triremes, 6 biremes, and 10 galleys.

10. Esk Savannah

Home of the swiftest horses, the hottest days, and the most dangerous wildlife around. In recent days, creatures have been crawling out of the southern mountains and destroying villages, eating livestock, and killing anyone foolish enough to get lost. The garrison here is entirely mounted and ride across the auburn grasslands to meet their foes. It appears to be a losing battle, however, as every season even more monsters crawl north, with only a withering force to stop them.
Population:
400,000 citizens
Engineering Level:

Tier 2

Resources:

25AP in farmland

2x tier 1 horse breeders.

Miscellaneous:

Big, bad beasts in the south. Very dangerous.

Imperial Forces Present:

4000 Imperial soldiers quartered in 1 stone fort, and  5 wooden forts.

11. The Tamaraad Coast

The flashpoint for many wars, and the graveyard of countless Imperial fallen. Though it’s known for its bountiful farmland it also sports a large port for trade and sends wheat to all corners of the Empire. Considered Altaire’s breadbasket for centuries, the Tamaraad coast is one of the most important Imperial possessions, and has its own dedicated legion as a result.

Population:

700,000 citizens

Engineering Level:

Tier 2

Resources:

100AP in farmland

50AP in port

Miscellaneous:

Graves, fields of bleached bones, and shipwrecks litter the landscape of the coast.

Imperial Forces Present:

The Sixth Legion and a number of auxiliaries make their headquarters here. 6000 Imperial soldiers are quartered in a grand fortress.

12. Baahzuth Jungles

Despite having been conquered for centuries, the province remains mostly untamed. Had the wood been useful for ship-building, it might have been far more civilised. Luxurious and unique plants are this place's selling point, but it’s plagued by southern tribesmen and dangerous wildlife.
Population:
300,000 citizens
Engineering Level:
Tier 1
Resources:
1x Tier 1 Luxury manufactories (spices)
25AP in mercantile district
Miscellaneous:
Abandoned forts built during the Dominion Era are rumoured to be within the jungle.
Imperial Forces Present:
1000 Imperial soldiers quartered in two wood forts.

Annor’s Crossroads (5)

Governor (Their name, and a little personal history):

Lucretia Avernatus. (68 years old, female. Matriarch of the Avernatus dynasty.) Lucretia Avernatus comes from a long line of entrepreneurs, that stretch back into the mid 500’s, born with the Republican Era, much of the Avernatus’ early history was lost to the Imperio-Sorcerer War. What is known is that they began as merchants, and throughout the years moved to the production of goods, owning dozens of artisaneries and having a finger in many guilds throughout the Empire and amassed a significant amount of wealth by the years 700. During the peaceful years of 725-747, the Avernatus Dynasty was joined to the Domemius family, who followed a long and proud tradition of military leaders and officers & weapons manufacturing.

Ever since then, the Avernatus family has worked hard to amass a significant amount of wealth by operating dozens upon dozens of Forges and working to innovate in terms of military technology. Indeed, many of their manufacturies and foundries were located in Annors Crossroads, even before their appropriation of the land.

Lucretia Avernatus is the image of industrious. At the age of 68, she has lost all of her beauty (if she ever had any!) and kept only her iron hard features and steel grey eyes. A ruthless acquisitioner and unfailing Imperial loyalist, she has operated her manufacturies, foundries, smithies, forges and mines with exquisite efficiency for four decades. Two decades ago, she inherited the title of Lady of Annor, which she worked on with the same maniacal dedication that she had/has for her businesses. Her robotic efficiency and regard for her people is curbed by her husband, Dextus Avernatus (75). Of failing health, he is a calm, and warm man who spent most of his life studying philosophy and mending the bruises that Lucretia’s iron fist caused. For how long he will be able to do that remains to be seen.

Their three children, Decimus, Ferro and Acera still live.

Your Provincial Culture:

Annor’s Crossroads has for a long time been a land of trade, and innovation. Even before their takeover, the Avernatus family has recognized its central position and the optimal setting for foundries and other production facilities. As such, the people of Annor are industrious and hardworking. A man who does not work is a man with no function, and no use. The people are fair, welcoming and respectful, however everyone is expected to work. A traveler should not expect free room and board, but if he works hard in the farm or helps the father of the household in the Smithy during his stay, he will have warm welcomes, a bed and good food.

‘Do your part’ is an unspoken tenant of daily life in Annor.

Along with this, come Lucretia’s Laws.  The laws and rules of the land, enforced by the military. Severe with herself and her people, Lady Lucretia imposed strict conditions on Annor from the day her rule began. Theft was punished by forced labor, murder was punished by forced labor until death in work camps. Rape was punished by castration and ten years of forced labor. Desertion was punishable by death. Crucifixion is the most popular method of execution in Annor, and their are hundreds of crosses lining the rome to the Capital, Lex Dimitis.

Desertion is the only act punishable by immediate execution along with high treason to the Empire. These two laws reveal two of the three core aspects of Annor society.

-Hard work

-Loyalty to the Empire

-Strong military tradition

Lucretia Avernatus is a staunch imperial loyalist who has, since her early days, taken inspiration from the Imperial throne. She survived the nightmare era and held her family together through sheer force of will. However, the truth of the desperate conditions of the Empire were laid bare to her, and with that, came the resolve to never see the Empire falter again. Therein lies the strong drive for military excellence within Annor, and the dream to see the Empire restored to what she knew in her infancy.

The Region is divided into four relatively distinct casts:

-The Owners are the nobles, the master blacksmiths, the managers of large foundries, the owners of mines, farms, sawmills, mills, shops, inns, etc. While there are varying levels of prestige even within this cast, they are all generally owners of a business, and control other people. The divisions within this cast are done by wealth, family, city, business type, etc.

-The Soldiers are just that, the soldiers. Any man enrolled in the military is a part of the Soldier cast, who enjoy certain benefits such as less work time. However, when not in action or training, they are expected to fulfill government mandated positions of labor, which is usually strenuous, but in more careful doses.

-The Workers constitute the majority of the population, and are the labor force of the region. They toil in nearly every type of business and are seen as the commoners and peasants. Generally, they are hard workers who spend most of their life laboring. Cast division here is done by type of work. Expert metallurgists are far higher in the foodchain than farmhands, yet they remain in their cast, unless they form their own foundry.

-The Burdens are the criminals, those incapable of performing any sort of job, the mentally disabled, the amputated, the chronically ill and the infirm. They are reserved no benefits and given little kindness by the people. The criminals and jobless are the most harshly judged, while the others are shunned more than anything.

Nobles are expected to own multiple successful businesses. To not do so is a huge blow to their prestige.

A Unique Military Unit for your Province (You should read the mechanics before you decide):

Imperial Ashwing Regiment (Light Gunpowder/Specialist Handcannonneers)- Bonus: (Veteran for base price) An elite regiment of men well trained in the arts of handling the new handcannons. They are lightly equipped in terms of armor, but carry both a sword and their handcannon. Highly trained and equipped with the finest weapons that Annor can provide. They are experts in the handling of gunpowder and have high knowledge of defense building, siege engineering, and the use of explosive matters.

Province of choice:

Blightswamp

Governor (Their name, and a little personal history):

Marcus Scipius is the new governor of the province of Blightswamp, much against his will. Until recently a prominent figure in the imperial court, Marcus’ good fortune came to an abrupt end when he lost his temper at a member of the imperial council. Harsh words were said.

Marcus had committed no crime, and was in generally good standing in the capital. The council member could not openly punish him for the outburst, but he could very easily secure him a “””promotion.””” The smirk he gave as he sent the new governor and his family away to his new posting is not one that will easily be forgotten.

Your Provincial Culture:

People in Blightswamp are nearly as poor as they are dirty. Due to the poor quality of the land, settlers had to be forced to move, taken from the destitute and the criminal classes. Luckily, there’s fairly little crime here: nobody has anything worth stealing.

There is a significant cultural divide between the citizens of Blightswamp. The elite, such that it is, can be found in the tiny capital of Vallum Palus or in the small imperial forts strewn on drier areas of the region. They are referred to as “Valii,” and some of them have even seen a real city in their lifetime. This group is responsible for the few farms in the area, built on drained portions of swamp.

The second group and by far the largest is the Venandii. No one is entirely sure how many are still alive in the disease-infested region, and it’s hard to extend any kind of authority to them, because of just how self-sufficient they are. They subsist off fishing and hunting in the deep swamp, and hold the Valii in a certain amount of contempt.

Despite this, these swamp dwellers are largely loyal to the empire, and are responsible for harvesting most of the lumber that Vallum Palus exports south. One hears reports of isolated groups of Korvics living alongside them in the wild, but even if there’s any truth to the tales, the barbarians have never been seen near town.

A Unique Military Unit for your Province (You should read the mechanics before you decide):

Blightswamp Stalkers: Recruited from the Venandii into the provincial militia, these rangers are excellent swimmers and skilled at stealth and camouflage. Their tactics are dirty in every sense of the word: whether setting booby traps or loosing arrows tipped with fecal matter, they learn their territory well and take pleasure in

Province of choice: Baahzuth Jungles

kVjTZrF.jpg

Governor (Their name, and a little personal history): Caelus Artorius, Caelus Artorius was born to Lucius Artorius and Cluntia Lorio. Growing up along one of the many rivers in the jungle Caelus was like all men of the Jungles, encouraged into serving in the Legion. Upon his 18th year he officially joined and was dispatched to join the 72nd Horse Archers, in Fort Drouth, a massive stone citadel in the Esk Savannah. Clashes with beasts were the main form of conflict in the Esk, It was not uncommon for the garrisons to be dispatched twice a day on horseback to drive back the beasts as much as possible. In 932NE Caelus and a portion of his garrison were moved to the Tamaraad Coast to stop the advance of the Trinnimec king.

At the Battle of the Scorched Tongues. Upon the loss of the cohort field Commander Caelus took charge and led his archer cavalry forward with the mercenary advance at the behest of Scipius. This bold move did not go unnoticed. Back in Baahzuth Caelus was honored as a hero in the eyes of the province. Throughout the next few years the current Governor Aloric took a fond approach to Caelus, Governor Alorics daughter Vibia was married to Caelus and upon Governor Alorics death at the hand of illness, Caelus took over as Governor in 936NE. In his few years as Governor Caelus has pushed for more expeditions into the jungle and with a focus on finding the forts hidden by the jungle long ago.

Your Provincial Culture: To thrive in the southern heat and jungles, one has to be strong. From the time of the first conquest of the jungles and founding of the warrior colonies. Much has been carried over through the centuries. Unlike the northern provinces and their adoration of needless extravagance and weak milk drinking men. In the Jungles the roots of the first warrior colonies are still evident.

A certain pride is honed for those who have served. Almost all young boys are guided down the path of military service. Be it serving in legions quartered on the northern borders. Or being sent to police the waterways of rivera as a simple footman enforcing the Emperor's trading tariffs and laws. While most men of a strong age work moving spices up and down the river citizens hold a distinct bond of shared Legionary service with one another not seen in the other provinces, rich and poor alike work to slowly bring the Jungles into the fold of the empire through hard work and warrior traditions of the first colony.

A Unique Military Unit for your Province (You should read the mechanics before you decide):

“The Baahzuth Jungles produce some of the fiercest men i've ever seen, strong, loyal and ready to fight for their Emperor. If We had 100,000 of their soldiers we would rule the world.” -General Flavius

Baahzuth Ranger, skilled in camouflage and unconventional warfare. Imperial Generals for centuries have deployed Baahzuth Rangers ahead of their armies. These hardened men choose stealth and silence in their movements. harassing enemy flanks and flanking themselves and scouting.

These soldiers carry both a crossbow and shortsword as well. This affords them flexibility normal infantry or scouts in the Imperial Legions do not have. Being able to engage the enemy at range and in hand to hand. Though they should not be deployed as soldiers at the front of a battle line. They can double as light infantry if absolutely needed.

Province of choice:

Riviera

Governor (Their name, and a little personal history):

Andronikos Berenikeia

The Berenikeia dynasty were among the wealthiest of the Riviera's upper classes, owning vast vineyards producing some of the finest quality drink in the whole Empire. Eventually, they got tired of sticking to wine, and moved into politics with some success. They bought their way into relevance, and soon had a permanent presence in the Imperial Court.
Andronikos is the latest patriarch of the Berenikeia and had a notable influence in Court since he was a young man. Upon the reorganisation of the Empire, he was chosen to become governor of his and his dynasty's home province, giving the recently ascended Emperor Altus a trusted and loyal partner ruling over the Empire's richest lands.

Your Provincial Culture:

The Riviera's culture is somewhat unique among the Empire, due in part to its geographical isolation brought about by the mountain ranges of the southern Gray Coast and the Royal Highlands. Most importantly in this regard is its wealth, coming from its fertile and naturally irrigated lands. In other provinces this deviation from Altairean culture would likely have been clamped down upon, however in the Riviera was too rich, and brought too much money to Imperial coffers to risk unrest or even revolt.

It is also for this reason that the Riviera sees such a wealth disparity. There are essentially two classes - the obscenely wealthy and politically influential merchant-nobles, and the dirt poor farmers and workers. The latter still has a better life than in most provinces, however, thanks to the fertility of the land securing against famine (in all but the worst cases) and a recent trend among merchant-nobles of investing in the well-being of their subjects, mostly to avoid unrest which would bring a loss of profit.

A Unique Military Unit for your Province (You should read the mechanics before you decide):

Kataphraktoi

Armed and armoured in the best equipment that you can buy, the Riviera's Kataphraktoi form some of the finest heavy cavalry in all the Empire. While just as useful as cavalry on plains and flatlands, the pre-Imperial culture of the Riviera seeps through in them, as repeated defenses on the surrounding hills and mountains have meant they are traditionally skilled at fighting in rough terrain also.

Province of choice: Numba 9

Governor (Their name, and a little personal history): Aeon Tulius was, albeit, not the first choice of a person to govern the island of Salathai, though he was the one the people had wanted. After instating a governor who had treated the native people of Salathai with cruelty and ruthlessness to quarrel any chances of rebellion, the people had warned of what the governor had attempted to stomp out before it manifested.

Teetering at the edge of yet another rebellion against the emperor, he had given in to the demands of the people from the island and substituted in a new governor who had been recommended by the people. A native to the island, and a spokesperson of the inhabitants, Aeon had a much gentler approach unlike his previous counterpart and had pledged to make the island of Salathai into the trade center of the West in hopes to settle the quarrels between the people and their emperor.

Your Provincial Culture: As expected with any kind of land with mass amounts of people moving through it, the island of Salathai is a melting pot of various cultures from across the western coastline.

(Will add a lot more when I’m home)

A Unique Military Unit for your Province (You should read the mechanics before you decide): Salathai Marines. With the sea being apart of their life from birth, the Salathe people have perfected their craft over hundreds of years as expert raiders of the sea. Utilizing further tactics compared to other marines, the Salathe have been known to never fail a boarding for being bested on the sea would be their greatest downfall.

Province of choice: Plains of Farlus (8)

Governor (Their name, and a little personal history):

Aulus Villus Aquila, was a young boy when the Emperor decided to split his lands into several provinces. His father came from a line of horse breeders that had them in quite the position to do more than okay for themselves. His father sold a majority of their horses off to the Empire and her armies which is what garned him his wealth. Before it was known his father had become the governor of the Plains for his service, loyalty and knowledge of the plains at its people.

Aulus had been sent off with the local sorceries for his education as his father thought it would bring him further in life than his lack of one could bring him. His magic abilities were none, or so he thought for now he would be stuck in the books of literature and mathematics were his father wanted him for one day he would take over. Which would come sooner than expected.

14 years later when Aulus was getting ready to celebrate his name day, of 19 years old he received the news of his father’s passing and his naming as the governor to Farlus, it confused Aulus as his father hadn’t contacted him since he was sent away. However, his task at hand was larger than he expected with the growing discount that was rising within Farlus.

Now just shortly after his naming as governor, Aulus had begun to transform Farlus back into the respected farmland it once was. With several goals in mind which required the might of his military and the knowledge of his scholars and sorcerers. The task of transforming the Farlus into one of the more powerful provinces in the Empire would be a challenging one but the young governor had his chance at history and he hungered for it.

Your Provincial Culture:

Falrus is a land where wealth is a measured by land and political which usually went hand in hand. Next those of high religious rankings, many of the peasants within Falrus followed the faith of Altaire fanatically, as it gave them the escape from their miserable grain filled lives. However, there was slowly a shifting power balance that was coming from the young Governor's actions.

Political Influence Rankings that would be common knowledge to those who held the slighest ideal of Falrus would look somewhat like this.

1. Governor Aulus

2. Septitus Salonius Marsus (Largest land owner in Falrus)

3. Octavia Scato (Head Sorceresses)

4.  Flavius Festinius Igennus (Head of the Church of Altaire)

Massive farms and ranches for breeding horses dominanted the landscape of Falrus, formerly operated by slaves the need for farm hands soon rose after the death of many during the Nightmare Era. Many slaves who were owned were either freed by decree or stuck around out of the need for a job. Not as common as to what it used to be, it is no surprise to those who walk the streets to see a man accompanied by a few slaves.

Those in the military of Falrus all come different sides of the spectrum, those who could afford horses mainly the nobles made up a bulk of the cavalry and those who could not, made up the infantry and were assigned their military status based on their standing political status.

A Unique Military Unit for your Province (You should read the mechanics before you decide):

 Falrus Chariots (Heavy Chariot)

This Chariots are famed from the craftsmen that are plentiful within the capital. Beautiful crafted, sturdy machines of war. Equip with blades on the wheels to cut through the unsuspecting infantry that try to run away from them when they hear the rumbles of the wheels barreling down at them. Manned by a specialist class of troops, only those capable of taming these machine are trusted with them. Political class be damned, these men were legends within the Falrus army.

Province of choice:

The Island of Salathai

Governor (Their name, and a little personal history):

Gaius Aurenian Lucinius is a devout Neaist and adopted grandson of Gaius Aurenius Maximus, a soldier of high rank and much distinction. Aurenian’s adoptive father, Appius Aurenius, was a man notable mainly in his mediocrity and the wealth he inherited from his own father. Though he was born on the island of Salathai, Aurenian was raised in Altaire, after his adoption and removal from the island at an early age by his father, on one of his many pleasure cruises.

Aurenian, by contrast, has something of an eye for military matters, though he is still an amateur, especially in comparison to his grandfather. Most of his study of such is born more from a desire to live up to his grandfather’s legacy than of any true interest in the subject. No, Aurenian’s true passions are politicking and history, a combination that, along with a lust for power born of an urge to prove himself more capable than his adopted father, led to his attempts to gain a governorship.

When an old family friend rose to power on the Imperial Council, Aurenian saw his chance, and immediately set about currying favor with the man. Months of calculated obsequiousness and several cashed favors later, Aurenian had ensured that his name would be put forth as a possible replacement when it came time for a new governor to be chosen.

Upon the death of the old governor of the island of Salathai, there were surprisingly few candidates for his replacement. His perceived familiarity with the island due to his ancestry and his shameless politicking gave him a leg up on his competition, and thus, Aurenian set out to the west.

Your Provincial Culture:

Prior to their conquest by the Altairean Empire, the people of Salathai were mainly fishermen, though the island did produce the occasional merchant, with many of their technological achievements naval.

Today, the Salathai are fairly active as merchants. While not as prosperous as Riviera, the Salathai merchants were well-placed for success, especially when the Altairean Empire was unified and at (relative) peace. However, the loss of their industrial capabilities has significantly hampered their ability to produce goods and ships in the volumes they could prior to the Nightmare Era. Furthermore, the combination of their near-bloodless conquest by the Empire, an independent streak among the people that was not stamped out in said conquest, and intermingling with foreign cultures via trade has made Salathai more sympathetic to rebellious thought than other, less independently-minded provinces. While uprisings do occur on the island itself, the Salathai tend to back rebels in other provinces, funding their efforts while biding their own time.

The most common expression of rebelliousness among the Salathai is in their religious practices. When asked, they will, of course, swear up and down that they are devout Neaists, and in public, many act the part. However, in private, most stick closer to the traditional animistic practices of the pre-conquest Salathai, with less reverence for their ancestors than Neaists have.

Rumor has it that pirates occasionally form small settlements in otherwise uninhabited parts of the island. While this has been done in the past, at this time, the veracity of these rumors is uncertain.

A Unique Military Unit for your Province (You should read the mechanics before you decide):

Lateen-rigged galley:

Originally developed by the natives of Salathai, these ships are usually based off of the smaller biremes and uniremes, using their lighter hulls and triangular sails for increased maneuverability and speed against the wind. Their speed when sailing at higher on the wind comes at the cost of swiftness at a run, where more traditional galleys have the advantage. Though usable in battle as one would any other galley, the lateen rugged galley’s true value can be found in scouting and long voyages, where it’s maneuverability grants it a distinct advantage.

Province of choice: 6. Royal Highlands

Governor (Their name, and a little personal history): Governor Iagani Banachus

An old and grizzled man who has seen better times. His face is cragged and pock marked with years of different weather beating his face. In his youth he was far more handsome and energetic. He even left the highlands, something most clans tabooed. He traveled far and wide, at first nothing more then a wanderer. But as is prone to happen, the Legions needed more men. Discovering he held no job or position in a city, he was drafted. And for the next 20 years of his life he served the Legion and Empire directly. The common ranks loved him, the strangely named and accented man from the mountains. Many however ridiculed him for his obvious poverty and lineage. But he was a stubborn and prideful man. He got into many fights, sometimes with the wrong people. A Imperial Officer once was on the receiving end of his fist. The officer stood up, and praised him for his punch. And that was the start of his later life. Iagan was a wise man, and used his knowledge of the common ranks to help the officer rise in popularity and power. As well as serve as his bodyguard. As this man soared, Iagan’s health declined as age took its toll. Having more than served his time, he is released with full honors. He returns to the mountain clans, having only periodically been able to visit. With such history and influence on his back, he is elected to represent the council.

Your Provincial Culture: The Royal Highlands are a place of solitude and stunning vistas. The province itself is quite large. It is filled with large mountains, and craggy valleys. The coast is one of sheer force. Waves hitting the large bluffs, shaping them to their will. One could wander and collect seashells or strange bits of colored glass for hours. Or stare at the stunning array of colors in the mountains. Some say the colors are rich veins of gems. Others that it is the sorcerers in the Academy, a by product.

Life is simple in the hinterlands. Though covering a large tract of Imperial land and coast, the population is disproportionately small and poor. They stick together in extended families they like to call clans. They usually squabble amongst each other. Sometimes for matters of pride between one or the other happening by the moment. Sometimes for feuds that ran back into the darkest crevices of memory. But it was hardly blood soaked civil war. Most disputes could be settled with a good duel or athletic sport competition. When it did get bloody however, it was merciless. The Imperial Sorcerers and their retinues have had to get involved before- a tiresome distraction from their studies.

But they were a proud and hospital people. Though they did not take well to outsiders. Even more than the damned clan who keeps stealing their cattle. And many didn’t bother to even come up. It was ironic, such a poor patchwork of families. Families who were living higher than any rich man in the Imperial plains. Families who lived amongst Sorcerers and Gemstones, and other undiscovered wonders.

A taste of the ruling houses;

House Banachus

Over the years Iagani’s family was receiving special attention. They were proud to hear of the exploits of their son. One who was fighting and serving like a true Highlander. All this status and supposed loyalty made Imperial attention catch their eye. They lived in the town supporting the Academy, and were proud of it. They begin to receive Iagani’s excess money, and favors/jobs from the Sorcerers and Imperials. They were soon the Empire’s star family, when Iagani returned to them. Now they were the clan of unity, a blend of Highlander and Imperial ideas and culture. Iagani’s son and heir is a sorcerer in the academy.

A Unique Military Unit for your Province (You should read the mechanics before you decide): “Mountainwatch” Usually the aristocratic sons of the ruling clans. They prove their courage and skill by joining the Mountainwatch bands. They typically were employed to watch the borders from outsiders, defend the passes, guard the coast, and hunt outlaws. They were large and fearsome men, preferring to use large axes and swords to shatter enemy formations. ((SUBJECT TO CHANGE))

Province of Choice: The isle of Salathai (9) ((I am afraid there can only be one))

Governor(a little ? What does that word mean ?): The governor of Salathai is one Marcus Orellios. Marcus originally served as the centurion of the first legion, first cohort, first century. As can be expected of a man of this rank Marcus was a skilled military commander though he came of humble beginnings. Marcus was born in 910 NE born in the capital city of Neia. Here he was born to a prominent merchant, not one that could be counted as one of the big oligarchs who controlled much of the city's commerce but still a significant merchant. He mostly dealt in the iron trade and seeing the amount of war that was consuming the empire it made him quite a rich man.

Being born to a rich merchant Marcus managed to get a proper education as well as a proper upbringing. As he was the son of a merchant, though a rich one Marcus had contact with both some of the upper echelons of soceity as well as the poorer ones.(though his father disapproved of his interactions with the latter group.) But most of his real interactions happened in Altaire, since Neia was sacked when he was just 5 years old and he and his father were lucky enough to survive the sacking.

As time progressed Marcus managed to gain a proper understanding of both the upper and lower classes of soceity and put his efforts into interacting with both of them, thus even at a young age practicing social interaction and to a lesser degree how to command his troops. Then when Marcus was old enough he enlisted in the Imperial legion, though the term 'old enough' could be stretched a little thinly since he joined the legion at 14 when the official conscription age was 16. But in those trying times being a few years younger than official regulation was not that big a barrier to jump over when the empire was threatening to collapse in on itself.

Joining the legion Marcus found his purpose in life and went beyond the call of duty, training in even the small amount of spare time available to a legionaire. This attracted the attention of one centurion Quintus Falerius Cyrius. Seeing talent in Marcus the experienced centurion started mentoring him, teaching him right and wrong as well as what you did and most deffinetely did not do. Thus when he was 17 Marcus was assigned to the first century with the help of some influence of Quintus as well as the talent and discipline Marcus show cased. Here Marcus was quickly turned from a boy into a man due to all the battles faced by the first legion and somehow through luck and talent managed to survive, eventually becoming the Optio of the century when he was 19 and the other candidates for the position had died in battle, or just stopped trying to get the position since somehow through a ridiculous  amount of bad luck nearly every optio in the last 4 years had, often being hit by an arrow in the knee.

Then Marcus eventually became the Centurion of the 1st Century when he was 21 year old and his mentor and unofficial second father Quintus died in combat. During this period Marcus also met Scipicus. Scipicus, knowing and relying on the former centurion of the 1st had a keen intrest in the new centurion and if he could be relied upon in the same way as his predecessor. This became a bridgeway to a mutual admiration and respect between the two as Scipicus was impressed by the intelligence, common sense and more importantly determination of Marcus. Whilst Marcus admired Scipicus tactical genius and sheer aura that he exuded. During this time Marcus also became the unofficial 'representative of the soldiers' whenever Scipicus asked about the general opinion of the troops.

But then came the battle of the scorched tongues. Here victory was achieved by the power of black powder but there was still heavy fighting. During this fighting Marcus kneecaps got shattered after a Trinimec Horse shattered his kneecap in the chaos after he had killed it's rider. This made it so that Marcus could no longer be a soldier and had to move with the help of a wooden cane. But Marcus did not let some silly injury stop him from doing his duty to the empire and was with the suggestion of Scippicus as well as some other friends was assigned tot he isle of Salathai were he was to work as the righ-hand man of the local governor.

What he saw when he arrived on Salathai made Marcus furious, the governor was a lazy and fat man who did not properly do his duties and mostly threw parties whilst the people suffered and many loyal imperial citizens died this man had done nothing. But being a rational man Marcus did not try to gain the ire of the governor who still had a lot of power but slowly delegated the duties of the governor to himself. In the year 937 NE Marcus had already become the unofficial governor of Salathai. During his 4 yerars on Salathai Marcus knew of the internal dangers that plagued the island and knowing that rebellion was on the horizon Marcus decided to marry a local woman, Asinia Tasia. She was the daughter of a prominent Salathai house and by marrying with her he managed to gain the support of some of the less extreme nationalists. Thus he managed to balance the nationalist and loyalist tendencies in the province and when later in 1939 the governor died Marcus was almost immediately given the position. Now Marcus will face internal strife and smash any would-be assasins and traitors under his iron cane.

Your provincial culture(more might be added later):

Salathai is an island of opposites. Loyalist and nationalist, old blood and young blood, rich and poor, tradition and reform. Many Salathai are tradionalists who desire for an independent island and who hold on to tradition and often pride themselves on having a long ancestry. But in Salathai there are also loyal Imperials who have also adopted the local customs but also refined them to make it fit a more proper view of the empire.

There is also a large class divide between the poor and the rich, with the poor working for the numerous rich oligarchs that control the island in return for just enough to make end's meet. It had not always been so in the past as in years past there had been a large middle class but as tragedy struck the empire the class divide grew. This resulted in a large amount of dissent from the lower classes against the more prominent rich houses.

The lower classes of the island mainly consist of traditional Saltherians whilst the richer houses are mainly loyal Imperials. This caused for an even larger gap between the two social groups and will make the future that much harder for Marcus.

Most of the island's income come from trade as the harbor provides many jobs with the goods being imported and exported for them also enabling a steady rise of the middle class though as of right now it is still quite small.

As can be guessed by the class divide that is clearly present in the island most of the rebellions are instigated by the lower class, often starting with simple strikes against oligarchs before escelating into full-scale rebellions when governors try to militarily intervene. Thus whilst these rebellions often advocate independence and outsiders often see the Salathai as a whole being prone to anti-Imperialist acts these rebellions are most often focused on the class divides that is present, with nationalism often being the justification behind rebellion.

A unique military unit for your province: "Knarr's"

Based on the older gnarr's used by the Salathai before they were subjugated by the empire and the trireme's of the empire the Knarr is one of if not the finest ship to sail the seas. The Knarr is made through special wood treatment which improves the strength of the hull  and has enough room to house 2-4 ballistas making it both a danger from up close and far away.  But most indicative feature of the Knarr is based at the front. Here a face is carved out of the wood resembling that of a dragon, the sight of  this will make even the most illiterate peasant know that the Salathai are coming and for once all of their fury are not focused on their own island but on you.

Seven, Aulus March.

Governor (Their name, and a little personal history):

Sorbath Tielson, A man of 45 years with grey hair and visible stress to show for it.

A native to the region of the March, Sorbath had grown alongside his dwindling friends and family. At the age of 20, Sorbath now without a home to truly come back to enlisted into the military only to be thrown into the Korvic conflict. During this period of strife he garnered a scar upon his back given to him by a rather large Korvic man equipped with an axe. The battle of two floods saw those he grew to knew be cut down in droves, the battle lasted ages to the young man as he fought his way to a better tomorrow. Distinctly if asked, the only thing he cares to recite about it is the blood and those he misses to this very day. After this bloody battle Sorbath wished to resign from his position and return home to the march, he felt at home in the poverty but those around him suffered and with what pay he made he set about trying to change it. With the history behind him, he was no prideful man and filled with wise optimism, he was quickly elected to lead the province as governor.

Your Provincial Culture:

The poverty that struck the region had left it decadent, the only sort of improvement that the people could be prideful in was the Iron and port. The main city was towered over by its citadel, its age showing and without much funding it was a shadow of its former self. Surrounding the citadel is where the wealthy lived in very few but well guarded villas. The legionaries that we're assigned to the march would promptly raise an eyebrow being placed to defend the north, they would say that whole towns were empty. Though the obvious division in class with the wealthy living towards the citadel and the plebians living outward, all were poorer compared to their brothers and sisters in the nearby regions, thankfully they were heartier due to the constant raiding and harsh mountain lifestyle.

A Unique Military Unit for your Province (You should read the mechanics before you decide):
Aulus Sentinels, equipped with heavy segmented iron armor, they carry swords, spears, and most notably their tower shields. These men were originally the older men who fought a rearguard for their towns as they retreated from Korvic hordes. While a hopeless battle against the unending tide at the time, these men fought with distinction and those that survived formed their own company of sorts. The veterans trained the new eager men that now filled the majority of its ranks, many of them wanting to achieve the glory of their ancestors.

Tamaraad Coast (11)

Governor (Their name, and a little personal history):

Silus Iullius Lutatius. A young man recently moved into the position of rulership on the Tamaraad coast, a puppet for the complacent and still powerful families in the region. A scapegoat for their misdoings, but a lever to move the Empire to their wishes. Corrupt and downtrodden. Silus himself is the only son of an elderly minor noble with naught but three farmsteads in the very North of the coast. Not blessed by riches, but by cunning he groveled and shoveled **** for those mightier than him, to get him the reputation of being a reliable... servant. Unbeknownst to them the young man from Lutatius has dreams and goals beyond the imagination of any of the oldsters that quarrel amongst eachother for the decaying province.

Your Provincial Culture:

The Tamaraad Coast is mostly populated by three distinctive people, who live in harmony with eachother (more or less at that, of course). Firstly and clearly the Imperial descendants from days of old, who are by now the biggest party, having assimilated the majority of the second most populous group, the Tamaarad people themselves. Followed by the third group, smaller but still noticeable and mostly settled in the northern reaches towards the border of the same nation, the people of Umbrant. Naturally there are more backgrounds present, but these three do make up most of it.

Rich in harvests, although these have fallen in these past years of decay, the Tamaraad Coast boasts a very diverse palette of foods, ranging from mostly agricultural products to the riches of the sea in fish. Animal husbandry is less prominent, given the need for more space, for which there have always been aspirations towards the neighbouring savannahs of Esk, it's wide lands ideal for sheep and cattle. The city of Tamaraad is chalked white, like the hills of bones here and there between the farmsteads covering the province. Flat roofs, tall rooms, to have heat go up and move out through heating slits underneath those very same rooms, to allow them to remain cool whilst being inside. Little mediterranean forests dot the landscape with the background of endless mountains, that might yet hold riches for Tamaraad.

Back to the city, as white as the remainder of it, is the central dome standing opposite of the big government palace (also white, they have a lot a bones). This dome resting upon pillars acts as the central market plaza, regularly patrolled by the Nautae and Imperial soldiers to remove any beggars, homeless and thieves, to protect the place where the wealth of Tamaraad is traded. Then on the other side beyond the dome, opposite of the palace, with another dome, but closed, the city's church, dedicated to the Imperial faith, the worship of the ancestors.

(More to be added as needed.)

A Unique Military Unit for your Province (You should read the mechanics before you decide):

Tamaraad Nautae (Nautae is plural in latin and means sailors)

Comprised of volunteers, former slaves, homeless, people without possession, the Tamaraad Nautae have developed themselves to be a traditional force in the military of the Tamaraad Coast. Operating both as crewmen on ships at sea, and in times of need as soldiers on land. Geared with unusually curved swords, as well as handaxes, lamellar armor and the poor man's hunting bow, these soldiers are excellent raiders, skirmishers and seafarers.

Province of choice: The Blackwoods

Governor (Their name, and a little personal history):

The very epitome of the term "grizzled veteran", Governor Varo Macharius has served in the Imperial Legion for the majority of his life and was one of the principle generals in charge of the reconquest of the Blackwoods. His campaign was notable for securing the somewhat bloodless surrender of numerous Korvic tribes, greatly hastening the rout of the remaining barbarians. Upon victory, Macharius was given governorship of the province - a man whose life had been war and hardship now had a chance to settle down. He established his capital in the ruins of the old provincial city of Elona and set to work rebuilding the battered province. One of his first acts was to marry the daughter of a pacified Korvic chieftain, a woman many years his junior, in what was seen as a political marriage to cement the uneasy peace. Those closer to him think instead that he simply wanted to raise a family, having spent so many years at war. Now in his mid 50s, Governor Macharius happily presides over the Blackwoods with a swelling brood of children and loyal advisors from his days on campaign. Some believe that settled life has made the old wolf soft, however, that the sort of man needed to keep such a wild province together is both younger and quicker to action. They also whisper of the Governor's "witch" wife enchanting him into apathy and stupor - after all, she is a Korvic. Those who whisper these things do not do so in earshot of Macharius, however, for fear that the old wolf still has teeth.

Your Provincial Culture:

An eclectic mix of cultures, from newly arrived frontiersmen and settled Veterans to the more hard-scrabble and mistrustful local Blackwoodsmen, with even a few pacified Korvic tribes. With the Blackwoods reconquered, many of the raised legionary units were disbanded and their veterans given land and title in the province they had fought long and hard to reclaim from the barbarians. As such, new settlements, the veteran colonia, were constructed for these newly retired soldiers. The native Blackwoodsmen, though decimated by the long Korvic occupation and eternally grateful to the wider Empire for driving out the invaders, are nevertheless resentful of these new arrivals - with some seeing this as just another occupation. The settlements of the Blackwoodsmen tend to resemble wooden forts in defensible positions within the deep forest.

Unique to the province is the presence of pacified Korvic tribes, those barbarians who quickly sided with the advancing legion against their savage brethren, or who were brought to heel and promptly bent the knee. Neither the Veterans or the Blackwoodsmen are entirely happy with this state of affairs, but in years since the reclamation there has come a relatively stable society. There is even some integration, with Korvic merchants adopting Altairean styles. Many hope that eventually the Korvics will become fully assimilated as citizens of the Empire. Others see them as just another threat lurking in the woods, a fifth column ready to strike should the barbarians ever return to conquer the Blackwoods.

Governor (Their name, and a little personal history):

Governor Aurellius Laurentian Tentallicon, age 24, second son of the fourth-aunt-thrice-removed of Counselor Jullius Cantius, is perhaps best known for the great beauty of his mother and the long Tentallicon lineage, which can be traced back to one of Emperor Belarus' centurions, Lex Tentallicon. His half-brother, Cossus Tentallicon, though quite daft, was set to inherit the family manors and the seat of Governor of the Gray Coast that it has held since 920, and he was given a centurion position among the Third Legion.

Through what can only be described as terrible luck, their father and Aurellius' older brother were set upon by a small farmer's rebellion and Korvic sea raid at the same time and bludgeoned to death moments before the provincially stationed Imperial legions arrived, and without any witnesses. A shocking series of events that most know was orchestrated by his mother and Counselor Cantius, this nearly impossible coincidence gave Jullius a chance to improve his dear aunt's standing to mother of a governor and improve his influence outside of the council, recalling her to Altaire to live a life of excess on the many Tentallicon riches that never reached Aurellius' hands. Aurellius has been in control for four years, and his greatest treasure is a preserved steel forearm-length sword, bought off a Crossroads merchant for four carts of iron. Yes, he was ripped off. No, he doesn't know.

Your Provincial Culture:

The Litorii, Coastmen, are well-known for the hardiness and rugged nature of their men and the hardiness and rugged nature of their women. Cinereo, the capital of the Gray Coast, is little more than a warehouse-city, built near the Third Legion's stone fortress to more easily protect itself. Nestled deep in the Mola Mountains, it is said there is an iron storage for every man and a wheat for every five. Rough iron and unrefined wheat do not make a province rich, however, and the Litorii are a prime example of what an Altairean official might call "provincial lifestyle". The fashion style of the Coast hasn't changed in a hundred years - "fur style". The leathers of the livestock, the furs of whatever animal they catch in the foggy foothills of the mountain range, and the wool shirts of the working class permeate all classes here. The noblemen, all essentially because of some dabbling in the mining industry, boast of their plain iron-wrought swords they wear ornamentally, though it cannot usually be discerned that the weapons they hold are not mass-produced. Flowers essentially don't exist in the Gray Coast, so it has of course become a trend among the ten or so total noblewomen in the entirety of the province to wear a single daisy behind one ear. That's quite daring, here.

Like Cinereo, all major towns are built under the protective gaze of the Legion fortresses and forts, defending themselves from Korvic raids by inducing the Empire to do it for them. After all, those iron taxes go somewhere, yes? Two abandoned ruins of towers overlook the dilapidated highways into the capital, a relic from when the Gray Coast was the frontier of the Empire, and Belarus' Bridge, named after Emperor Belarus (whom, if it was not previously made clear, had never crossed this bridge) protects it from an invasion by coast. Small streams are boosted by aqueducts into a drinking-water lake and a thin river feeding into the sea in the northwest of Cinereo, named Lake Belarus (Again, Belarus never visited said lake. He probably never even saw the Gray Coast).

Perhaps the one and only interesting landmark of the Gray Coast, as bleak and filled with mountains as it is, is the ruins of the town of Syl. Once a small, almost-prospering town, the Korvics that inhabited the Blightswamp before Narponicus retook it had burned it to the ground. It never held riches, or ancient treasures, or anything silly like that, but it's something to talk about if an imperial bureaucrat decides to take an ill-advised tour of the province. Actually, there are about three remnants of buildings left, and it can barely be called anything. Yeah, nevermind. Not much of note here. There is a mountain, "Calavia's Peaks", named in sarcasm quite recently by the provincials for their governor's mother's famed peaks, and Aurellius did not bother to correct them.

A Unique Military Unit for your Province (You should read the mechanics before you decide):

Exspiravit - Dark, damp, cold. Obscured by the fog that so often permeates the Gray Coast, the Exspiravit are a fearsome division meant for fighting in the thin passes and craggy roads of their homeland. Wearing either a half-baked laminar breastplate of strips of Litorii iron on chain or a heavy leather-over-chain armor under a wool overcoat, the Exspiravit are not famously disciplined as many of other provinces, but are well known for their individual weaponry prowess.

A 50/50 mixture of pikemen and sword-and-kite-shield men at arms, recruitment is picked from the very strongest of the miners and farmers, and led generally by ex-legionnaires. Their two main tactics in open field battle, and there are only really two, are a full-frontal charge and a pike square, in which the men at arms form the first row and pikemen form the second.

The Exspiravit cohorts are definitively most famous for their night raids and coastal ambushes, in which they hide in the many villages that dot the landscape and ambush unwary pillagers or invasive armies looking for extra rations.
