Tamaraad Coast

Silus Iullius Lutatius

In a whole different world, another universe, very far away, a missive arrives in the capital of Riviera. It states that the newly appointed Provincial Treasurer is on his way to visit personally. As for the person to visit, it would be the governor of the Riviera itself. The Governor of the Tamaraad Coast is of course welcomed into the Rivieran capital, Potamopolis. From there he is invited and escorted into the Berenikeia family estate in the countryside, Pherenike, where the governor is residing for the Spring. Silus arrives on horseback, accompanied by only three men, one being Dolon his assistant, the other being two lightly geared militia men from the Tamaraad coast.

In big leather bags they are bringing papyrus scrolls and charcoal lumps. Record keeping apparently. "Welcome, Silus! A pleasure to have you in the Riviera, truly," greets Andronikos with a broad smile at the front of the family manor. "What brings you?" Silus unsaddles first, handing the reigns to one of his guards, before approaching Andronikos offering a firm handshake. "Unfortunately little less than business, Andronikos. Given that I recently assumed your position as provincial treasurer, it is only right that I come by personally for that matter." - "Ah, I see! Well I'd be delighted to lend you my assistance in whatever matters you bring!" Silus nods a bit. "I will stay in the province for a few days, given I need to assess some things regardless. Also, for the matter of today, I had a couple of questions. Followed by, going with my assessment, discussion about the status and well being of the province. Matters of various degrees of urgency and such." - "Of course, of course. Come in, set up your things and we can get to work. I will of course allow you to use my estate as a base, unless you wanted to stay in Potamopolis." - "I originally had planned on staying in an inn at the city, but if you are so kind to offer me the honor, I shall not decline." he laughs as he follows Andronikos inside.

Andronikos walks into his lavishly decorated manor house, sending a couple of men to help carry Silus' things. He leads Silus and his cadre to an unused but still well-kept and cleaned office, filled with a great many leatherbound books, mostly on the history of the Riviera and the Berenikeia dynasty. "Ah, here we are. I hope this is suitable for your needs? There are plenty of spare rooms for you and your assistants to stay in, also." - "Well, it more than suffices. I mostly will need you too for the matters I mentioned. Shall we start immediately?" - "Of course! Do go ahead," Andronikos says as he takes a seat on an armchair in the corner of the office, reclining as he stuffs and lights a pipe. Silus takes out a few scrolls, a piece of charcoal and begins scribbling a bit, generously big at that, to make it readable for everyone present. It states, first treasury audit of Riviera. "Alright... before I begin the little audit, do you have any records regarding last year's balances of the Provincial treasury? I am aware funds were allocated and distributed to certain degrees and amounts." - "Of course, one moment," Andronikos says, nodding to a servant who promptly leaves and returns with numerous scrolls and a single large book. He takes one, quickly reviews it, then hands it to Silus. "This is last year's Provincial Treasury funding and expenditure. I'm sure you will find no irregularities, and they will match up with the corresponding records in the capital." - "Mhm... thank you. You do not mind if Dolon, my assistant copies some of the ledgers and documentation here?" Silus looks up from the scroll which is still empty. "That will be fine, certainly." Silus gestures to the grey-haired Umbrantii, who immediately gets to work. "Alright, audition time. Let's see, as I will have your current records, I do not need to inquire into the past. Future. And this year. What projects does the province pursue?"....

Annor’s Crossroads - The Avernatus Family

Lucretia sits in her office and broods. She stares at maps, reports and financial sheets. Not much good, but not too much bad either. The fools of the council had blindly followed a spiteful man into electing an incompetant puppet. If they had no interest in strong provinces, led by strong people, then she had no interest in working with them.

--

Acera heaved the large tube onto the table and strapped it down with thick leather belts. She huffed and puffed and wiped her brow, right at the jointure where her leather cap ended, and her red, sweat covered face began. Really, Octavius should have found her a new aid by now! With one final sharp intake of air she walked to the other side of the room, with a big hunk of flesh hung from a chain. She patted it twice and tugged on the meat sharply. No give, firmly hooked. “Alright, let’s begin!” she said, clapping her hands once and marching back to the gun. She picked up a small notebook and scribbled down an entry:

Test Number 21; The Handcannon proves to still be an unreliable tool. I have had six explosions, four misfires and three wildly inaccurate shots, even at short range. Test number 18-21 have attempted to thin the barrel, reduce the projectile size and create a safer environment for gunpowder to be ignited within. The fuse system has also been reworked.

She blew on the wrinkled, grubby pages and put the book far away from the handcannon. “Test number 21...begin!” She grabbed a candle and lit the handcannon fuse, before stepping to a safe distance and sliding on a chainmail mesh visor. A boom, a spurt of flame and a cloud of smoke. The hunk of meat swung back and forth and the wall behind it cracked, sending a small shard of stone zinging into Acera’s leather apron. She slowly lifted her visor and stared at the hunk of meat, where a large cavity had been torn open. “Test number 21...end.”

----

Gnaeus Fabianus was a working man. An honest man! Apart from that one year of hard famine that pushed him into banditry. But it hadn’t gone all that well, and forced labor for five years in the foundry had discouraged him from continuing the practice. Now, he had found a decent wife, had two boys in the Provincial Army and a stable job at the age of fifty-five that didn’t include back-breaking labor two feet away from a furnace. He sighed deeply and leaned back against his cart, as his two donkeys plodded along the winding dirt road that lounged along the ruined highways. He didn’t like the highways much, they looked like something some magic person would cook up. Gnaeus hawked and spat out a runny, rusty looking mess from the back of his throat, splattering it along the dusty roadside. “Ahh, this is the life,” he said to his donkeys. “You having fun over there, Lucretia and Acera?” He chuckled and cracked his reins against their backs. You had to get back against the Owners somehow.

“Halt!” came a distant voice. Gnaeus hunched his shoulders and didn’t halt. “Halt!” came the shout again. Gnaeus halted.

A rider came up to him on one of the rare horses you could find in Annor. “You’re four days behind the rest of the steel shipments!” was the first thing the rider said. Gnaeus grimaced and shrugged his old shoulders. “Lucr- The donkeys got tired!” A few beads of sweat popped up on his brow.

The messenger glared at him, but nodded once and shrugged. “It doesn’t matter, you’re to return to the Capital immediately. You’ll be compensated for the route.”

“But I’m halfway to Farlus, and I know they’ve got some places to spend your gold at in the Capital!”

“What was your route?”

“The Esk Savannah,” said Gnaeus with a frown. He picked at a tall strand of grass growing high up to the cart and began to chew on it ruefully.

“And they sent you alone?”

“I’m a reliable merchant, everyone trusts me, even the bandits.” He paused. “That’s not what I meant.”

The man rolled his eyes and jerked a thumb backwards. “Get back to Lex Dimitis, Worker.”

Gnaeus sighed and squeezed his pack of gold coins ruefully. He’d been dreaming about this trip for months, saving up everything that his wife didn’t spend for a good time. “As you say, soldier,” he grumbled.

And so the messenger went from convoy to convoy, calling back steel shipments throughout the region and beyond to return to the Capital, until such time as a favorable agreement was made.

Stabilization of gunpowder is key! Acera Avernatus begins to work with Willus Millus on a new type of explosive weapon, the Millus Bomb. A solid clay pot, about the size of a hand with a carefully designed fuse, that lasts 4 counts. Once lit, you must toss it, and it explodes into a fiery ball of shrapnel and...fire. At least thats the plan. It hasn't really worked up until now. (6AP)

The gunpowder providers are contacted by Acera Avernatus, lead researcher in fireweapon technology within Annor. She asks for a research grant to further her experiments on unorthodox explosive weapons, larger scale handguns and the refinement of existing models. She sends this letter through her brother, Decimus Avernatus, currently stationed in the Capital. (0AP)

Patrols begin for real this year. The men trained and equipped the previous year are sent out to scour the roads of Annor and clear them out of bandits. Low profile bandits are sent to forced labor within various manufactories, while their leaders, and more organized groups are crucified along the long, flat, straight road to Lex Dimitis. (0AP)

T H E   R I V I E R A

mithflag.png.8f32adc0efffa4e75c145ed08808a48c.png

The year had only just begun, and already it had been rather eventful. A sort of legal coup had been staged against Lucretia's premiership of the Provincial Council, led largely by Marcus of the Blightswamp - Andronikos' main political adversary. Naturally, Andronikos had been ousted alongside his appointer and ally, and replaced by the still very capable Governor of the Tamaraad Coast. Andronikos was disappointed, but not too shocked or dejected - in the one year he was Lord Treasurer, he had managed to reap the benefits of the position handsomely.

While Silus was staying in the Pherenike estate (conducting the audit of the Riviera in person), Andronikos made sure suspicion wasn't cast on himself by staying with him. He wasn't sure if Silus was a friend or an enemy, so it would do well to keep him close either way. So his reasoning went, at least. He sends off several letters to Potamopolis, outlining his plans for the year's expenditure. He makes sure to show them to Silus before they are sent off for his ease of audit.

Despite Lucretia granting the Riviera continued use of the Annor foundry, the iron supply issues meant that Rivieran troops would be bereft of decent armour. That is, unless new foundries were constructed. Aulus' March had already received a grant to build a military foundry from the council, but in the spirit of securing equipment production for the Riviera and the Imperial North-West as a whole, Andronikos had decided a foundry ought to be constructed in the Riviera itself. The foundry constructed this year would only be capable of producing bronze and leather weapons and equipment, but the hope was that an iron supply could be secured and then the production capabilities of the Rivieran foundry could be increased.

In the same vein of industrialisation, Andronikos sends a large sum of 10,000 Denarii to Annor, of course escorted by an armed guard. The purpose of this was to assist in their technological advancement in the realm of engineering, which would help repair the long dilapidated Imperial Highways and allow the construction of ever more productive and impressive structures.

Andronikos, being the patriot he is, continues to contribute to the provincial guard. 3 cohorts of Medium Infantry are raised, the funding for one of which was granted by the Treasurer. They are armed with iron weapons and clad in iron equipment, then sent off to Aulus to the command of the Lord Marshal. Another cohort of similarly equipped medium infantry is also raised, though this one would remain under Andronikos' command, joining the cohort of Kataphratkoi in the fledgling Rivieran Army.

The amulet uncovered in the northern foothills was of great interest to Andronikos. He spends a fair some of money searching out scholars and sorcerers and compensating them for their work, should they be legitimate and make an actual discovery. He watches progress on the matter closely.

Aulus March

dc7d2472efcab48a39cfc7eb4866444b.jpg

Roleplay:

“Is this the location Clavius?” Sarboth said as they trekked through the rough terrain east of Aulus. The soldier in front of him clambered to look over the tip of the hill before looking back, “Aye m’lord, the Korvics have been massing here for the past year as you know. I’ve noticed that more continue coming and there’s some sort of organization about them.” Sarboth scoffed remembering the Legate’s words before peeking over the hill himself, the memories of the korvic war of old haunted him especially now.

A very large camp placed center in the valley, the river that flowed being used as a water source for the growing raid force. “Foreboding news Clavius… let us toil here no longer before they come and cut us down.” Sarboth motioned for his guard to come back to their horses hastily before riding back to the capital of Aulus.

The four centurions of met with Sarboth on the forum in the city, the men cohorts sharpening their blades and helping to rebuild the decrepit plaza. “The Korvics are massing, I want your cohorts fully maintained and ready for battle in the event they come down next year. Your duties for now are to continue clearing the roads, hanging bandit leaders and going so far as to give their loot back to our people.” The oldest of the centurions scratched his head, “We’re expecting 6,000 to 8,000 of those savages correct?” Sarboth nodded.

All four expressions turned to sour. “Meeting adjourned, I expect a report next year and good luck.” The four saluted and returned to their duties though Sarboth stood and watched his men at work, a pit of dread increasing within him.

The governor of the Blightswamp breathed in deep as he stepped out of his house. He hadn’t felt so alive in months, and somehow the moss hanging from every surface seemed a bit greener. Andronikos thought he could shove him aside? Him? Marcus Scipius? Well, he’d shown him. Marcus looked forward to being served refreshments by Janitor Andronikos at the next meeting.

“Maybe the swamp isn’t so bad,” he thought to himself. As if the universe were answering, he then stepped in a pile of human feces, apparently left on the street long enough for worms to infest it. “No, it definitely is,” he thought. “But at least I haven’t been forgotten!”

He hadn’t known what to expect from Vallum Palus, but he certainly hadn’t been impressed. The town was surrounded on three sides by untamed swamp, and it was nearly as dirty inside the walls as outside. The weather was awful, the people had yet to fully accept him, and he was hemorrhaging his personal money as his wife insisted on importing food from down south. The expense of his dinners almost made the lunches he got in town taste good, even though every one of them included an insect course.

Marcus made his way through muddy streets between ramshackle huts, walking without guards to the docks on the north side. There, a longboat was waiting for him with several of the Venantii.

“Mornin’ milord!” Called an unusually-friendly one, busy covering some accidentally-exposed skin with swamp muck. “Flavius here jus’ arrived.”

“Good to see you, Titus,” replied Marcus, for once being honest. Titus had proven extremely useful over the past year, serving as a link to the Venantii which made up the majority of the population. “How far out are we going today?”

“Only about eh mile,” Titus replied. “These things er all over, not thet anyone outta Palus here would know it.” Marcus raised an eyebrow, but the comment seemed good-natured.

“Ye want te learn te live in te swemp, govehneh?” The older Venantii, Flavius, spoke up, before lapsing into a coughing fit. “Ain’t herd. We’ll show ye.”

Marcus was skeptical, but didn’t let it show. With only a moment of hesitation he stepped in the boat, (which was covered in fish guts), and they pulled away from civilization. The journey went faster than expected; Venantii used their longboats to get just about everywhere, and they knew how to navigate. Despite being so close to the provincial capital, he could see almost no other traffic, but Marcus knew better than to trust his eyes in the swamp.

“What are ye doin’ in my swamp?!”

The governor hadn’t even noticed the hut emerging from the mist, but there it was, with a very annoyed looking local sitting on the porch. He’d obviously been swimming recently, because the usual layer of muck had been washed off.

“Easy Septus. Goveneh’s here te see te ferm.”

Marcus looked around. There wasn’t any dry land to be seen, let alone a farm. Nevertheless, the longboat docked under the hut, and the Venandii led him along a rickety wooden bridge between trees.

“See govehneh, wit’out places like this I don’t tink we’d e’er eat ou’ here. Plenny eh food, sure, but plenny eh us too.”

“I don’t see anything,” Marcus said after a pause. The bridge ended shortly ahead. The Venandii just looked confused. After another moment Flavius spoke up.

“Cetfish.” He pointed down, toward the water. Marcus’ gaze followed, and he finally noticed a line of wicker fence barely protruding from the top of the water. On one side of it, the water was slowly rippling as if dozens of animals were swimming in the murky swamp.

“Ye can build em ennywhere, govehneh,” said Titus. “End cetfish is easy te cetch, they hev babies quick. Best way te live out here.”

Marcus looked down at the aquatic pen below them. It struck him that expanding the farms around Vallum Palus was exceedingly expensive, given the work required to drain more land. If this worked, then whoever had tried to grow wheat down there had been a fool. And, the thought finally occurred to him, Cornelia actually liked catfish.

“There’s potential,” he finally said with a smile.

----------

A quiet year in the swamp. Marcus dedicates the vast majority of the provincial budget to an expansion of agriculture: if the province is to be permanently reclaimed, there will need to be a strong economic foundation. The newly-trained swamp stalkers stand ready to respond to any crisis, and some are sent to investigate last year’s raid on the Grey Coast.

Legate Ferio is kept abreast of all developments through routine correspondence, and reminded that should he require any assistance Vallum Palus will do what it can.

The Plains of Falrus

The foundry roared to life after the finishing touches happened late in 940E, granted it was not much in terms of quality weapons. It was much better than a wooden clubs and stone arrow tips. The growth of Falrus was starting, Aulus would not see it’s progress be halted. Military growth would see a boost in gold funding, though his advisors wished against it. Aulus needed to be able to deal with threats and assist Aulus March in case of Korvic invasion. The Empire was in a rebuilding phase and a mix of military and economic growth was needed.

Aulus and Octavia returned from their trip to the capital a short trip, but the pair enjoyed the quiet it brought for a brief moment of politics that had captured their young lives so quickly. Those who were their equals saw them in a different light, disrespecting their opinions. Simply stating inexperience and lack of understanding. Yet the same equals are stuck, bickering like children. Adding stupid titles to the council, cutting off needed foundries and upcharging because they lost. The only thing the provincial council provided to Aulus is the fact that most the other governors are old children, who cry every time something does not go their way. He would dread every month in the capital.

He shook his daydream again, as he stood on the docks seeing the blightswamp trade ships roll in with the much needing lumber supply that would begin stockpiling for the future Falrus First Fleet. After the unloading took place, he shook the raggedy captain's hand and sent him on his way.

As the large treasure ship finally weighed anchor and left the small dock of Salinae Caelus stood with several of the provincial guards. “A very fine haul if I do say so myself your excellency.” Caelus nodded slowly as he removed the lids on one of the five large trunks. Just as he knew. Filled to the brim with a 1000 denarii per chest and five of the large chests sat on the dock. “A fine haul indeed young soldier.” Grasping a handful of coins he doled two out to each man. A fine price for the loyalty of his soldiers and their comfort with a woman in the tavern later. “Thank you your excellency! We shall have this gold moved to the provincial guard right now sire.” Caelus nodded with a small grin as the men set to work moving the chests and he returned to the keep.

This year had been extra productive. The First Governor Lucretia had failed in her promises to Caelus and now the young man had seen her reduced to a petty child refusing all cooperation. Fitting for the most part.

The Island of Salathai:

Year 942

Gaius sighed as he considered the outcome of his troops' first real battle. On the bright side, his men had performed admirably, capturing one galley, recovered some stolen goods, and chased the pirates off of the island, capturing sixteen and killing eighty. Unfortunately, they had found no sign of the survey crew, lost fifteen men themselves, and the majority of the pirates escaped. Further, Gaius suspected that the commander of the Fourth Fleet may take issue with his men attacking before the ships of the Fleet were close enough to intercept the fleeing pirates, which would not be a pleasant discussion.

Still, at least something had come of the whole operation. He would have to find an interrogator to extract information on piracy in the Azure Sea from the prisoners, but Gaius felt confident that they would be able to give him a better idea of the state of the waters of the Sea. It was information he sorely needed, if he was to eradicate the scum from the Empire's territory. He would have the supplies sold, and use the proceeds to search for and hire an interrogation specialist to serve on his staff.

Albinius Valerius and his men had, of course, at least partially completed their mission, as the mine was now cleared. The men had even brought back a few chunks of iron ore. Hopefully, the new survey crew would find a usable vein, so Salathai's new foundry, once further expanded, could begin to produce new iron equipment.

Still, finding 250 pirates using his island for their own operations had both surprised and angered Gaius. It was clear that he needed to have a fleet capable of patrolling the waters and destroying the pirates before they grew too strong. While his navy was being built, however, his men would need to patrol the island on a regular basis. He returned to his desk, and began to devise a suitable system.

(For example: Century A has been in the field for 3 weeks, B for 2, C for 1. Century D has been in the reserves for 2 weeks, and Century E has been in the reserves for one week. Next week, A will go into the reserves, and D will take their place in the field. The week after that, B will go into the reserves, and E will go on patrols. The next week after that, C will go into the reserves, and A will return to the field. After that, D will return to Salath, and be replaced by B, and in the next week of the rotation, E will return to the reserves, and C will go back to patrolling. This continues.)

The Gray Coast

Governor Aurellius Laurentian Tentallicon

eWd3mEg.jpg

Dearest Mother-in-law,

I am worried for Aurellius. His days are spent with his many soldier-advisors, and his policies are slowly becoming more and more militaristic. I fear that without a wife, he will begin to spiral the Gray Coast into a martial state.

Dear Silia,

My son would be a top bachelor, if only he was not Governor of the Gray Coast. Perhaps, should we save our influence with the Empire, we shall soon find him a suitable bride.

[15 AP] - The Grade 1 Military Foundries at Cinereo are completed. [T1 20/20]

[7 AP] - The farmlands of the Gray Coast are expanded upon [7/20 for Stack 2]

[1 Influence] - Pledged to the Treasurer, only for use on a project approved by Aurellius.

[0 AP] - The Legates at the Gray Coast are asked of the possibility of launching an invasion of the Korvic-held islands to the North, with the assistance of one of the fleets. Their families in the capital will gain influence, they will be given vast estates if it comes under Gray Coast control, and there'll be no more need to watch out for Korvic sea-raids, making their jobs thereafter easier.

The Blackwoods

941NE

Governor Varo Macharius

FmS97lH.jpg

DETAILS:

Population - 486,000

50 AP in Agriculture

2 x T1 Lumberyard = 2 Lumber

MILITARY

Blackwoods Ranger Cohort (Light T2 Elite) x 2

Medium Infantry Cohort (Medium T2 Veteran) x 1

Galley x 2

STORY

((WITCHES?!))

ACTIONS

AP Pool: 20

Base: +10

Treasury Grant: +2

Agriculture: +4

Resources: +4

10AP - Agriculture investment. The deforested lands around Elona's peninsula are already host to many farms. Work is done to improve yields, including the provision of enslaved convicts and vagrants for labour. The concept is somewhat ironic, seeing as many of the non-Veteran or -Blackwoodsmen residents of the province were themselves convicts and vagrants prior to being shipped up north as "Imperial Pioneers", but oh well. Free labour is free labour!

4AP - Sorcerors Academies are contacted around the Empire, detailing the odd threat faced by disappearances of peasantry and korvics in unexplained circumstances. To be thorough, and to prevent panic among the already HIGHLY superstitious peasantry, Varo requests that a sorceror attend the province to be sure there is no magical cause behind this phenomenon.  4000 denarii is put aside for the costs of protected travel and up-front fees for an assessment of the situation.

5AP - Another cohort of medium infantry is raised from the populace. Again, Varo spends much of the time in the field overseeing the training.  (500 Medium Infantry, ELITE with T0 GEAR)

1AP - The FULLY TRAINED medium infantry and Blackwoods Rangers from the previous year are dispatched to secure the roads as best they can, restoring law and order. They'll be reinforced in the years to come, but for now the priority is the lands around Elona. Cruxifictions are mandated for bandit prisoners. Severed heads will do as well.  Locals are paid off to locate the bandit hideouts, with the amount of 1000 denarii allocated to the overall effort.

942NE

Joyous tidings for all that live within the empire--the Emperor has reached his 10th year! Much celebration around the whole empire (mostly), knowing that the Imperial succession is strong and secure! As a result, all Imperial funds sent to the provinces are halved due to the lavish celebration for their young liege taking priority.

In other news, due to upkeep costs the First and Fourth Fleet are ceded to the governing authority of Aulus' March and Salathai respectively. To be used at the governor's whim in order to deal with the piracy problem.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Royal Highlands:

The trip through the mountains is long and difficult, but these abandoned ports are sure to be discovered. What they find, however, is more than they bargained for. One of the old ports is as it was left, but utterly rotten and collapsing in on itself. The foundations could probably be salvaged, though. (10AP towards one port)

The other port is a different story. It’s still occupied, but by pirates. About six shabby galleys and two biremes are anchored in the small harbour, and pirates mingle, eat, gamble, and drink far from the eyes of any Imperial authority. A few watchtowers on the surrounding hills keep an eye on any trespassers that come by land, but the pirates in them don’t seem too observant. The surveyors, luckily, managed to slip away before being spotted.

The spies come back with some success. Due to the prevalence of banditry the criminals are hardly subtle about their occupation, especially when drinking. Before long, a dozen major bands are identified along the rubble of the old highway. They’re in the mountains, too.

Tamaraad Coast:

Those that are working the mines are proselytised to by a small division of priests that have made camp around the mine entrance. They have set up small shrines to Neia and remind all who are laying the foundations for the mines that the wealth extracted from the mountains is holy, and the will of the ancestors.  While some of the workers try to ignore the deluge of prayers, blessings, and idols, most of the workers get into the spirit of things. One supposes that dull work is made easier by believing that it’s holy.

Annor’s Crossroads:

Scholars study old buildings, and work out some of the mathematics needed to set the angles and measure the dimensions. They’re still perplexed by much of the processes that bring about the shaped stone.

... and it still isn't working! Especially the timing! The clay pots break very easily, and the fuse is tricky to deal with. Although the explosive still has a long way to go, it's not as lethal as it was before.

The Sorcerer’s Conclave in Altaire give their blessings for Annor’s Crossroads to continue their research into gunpowder weaponry. They will be observing their progress with interest.

After so many years of running free, the bandits in the region have clearly gotten lazy. Some don’t even post lookouts around their camps. The bandits that resist are killed without mercy, with those captured being sent off to piteous, endless labours, chained up in textile workhouses. Their leaders decorate the roads with their fetid, rotting corpses as a warning to others. Though the bandits are yet to be wiped out completely, the rest are certainly more wary (Road improvements unlocked. See rules).

Riviera:

Inquiries into the amulet do catch some attention! But not from the sources the Governor was probably hoping for. A master sorcerer from the Conclave in Altaire informs Andronikos that he will be arriving at his home this year in order to take possession of the amulet. Notably, without compensation. He advises Andronikos not to "accidentally" lose it while he's on his way. He also mentions he's bringing along 20 elite Prophet's Guard to ensure easy transport back to the capital.

Aulus’ March:

Legate Orbus apologises to the governor, but expresses that he has no time to allow your soldiers to train with his legions. The Korvic warband over the collapsing falls has grown to 8,000 savage warriors, and Orbus has come to the conclusion that they may not actually collapse on their own this time. He is therefore moving supplies, having his soldiers perform drills, and doing a lot of very important war things. He requests that you send any provincial forces available to his rally point. Looks like you’ll be training those troops yourself!

Blightswamp:

And they find things. A surprising number of things. (Skype)

Plains of Farlus:

The cavalry are an excellent choice for hunting bandits, as most of the criminals can’t afford horses. The riders run them down without mercy on the flatlands. There is still work to do, but the roads can now at last be travelled (road improvements unlocked. See rules).

There are a lot of mounds on the plains. The ones closest to the old highway appear to be picked clean of anything worth denarius. Most of the mounds were once ancient primitive graves, but others contained strange white stone. You mark out the ones that are pillaged or are simply regular hills, but it’s a large operation and may take a few years.

Despite looking through taverns, local gathering spaces, and the usual criminal hotspots, no-one is willing to speak a word of grave-robbing. Some claim that they’re unsure what the words themselves mean! No-one’s talking, and the black market is silent. You might need to wait a while for them return to their practices.

Baahzuth Jungles:

The poor of the capital appreciate it, but there are so many poor and needy there that a thousand denarius barely causes much change in the daily life of the wretched. It’s still appreciated, and the citizens of the capital make note of it. (+1 Imperial Influence)

Legate Pius returns covered in blood once more, this time with only 30 women and children bound in ropes. According to him, all the men, and some women and children violently resisted him. None of his men disagree with his statement. He also makes it known that he will not perform any more of the governor’s veiled slaving. If he desires something killed, he may call the legate, but from this point on all requests for “patrols” are being refused.

Island of Salathai:

The survey team returns in quick order. The mine has clear traces of iron, and a great number of human skeletons. They’re not sure what the skeletons are indicative of, but this mine WAS abandoned in the past.  Perhaps it was raided in the past? (5AP invested in abandoned mine) (Gain 1 iron resource)

A retired torturer from Morothai applies for the position. He apparently has an Imperial commendation for the most information gained from the least fingers removed. The pirate prisoners talk quickly, but aren’t too knowledgeable on the navigation of the ships themselves, but they often wait out the winter at an old fortified port on Oarsbrekk. They meet pirates from many bands in the port as well as it’s a major recruiting spot. Other than that, they live transitory lives on the sea and in hidden inlets like on Salathai, the Gray Coast, and Riviera.

The absurdly rigorous and organised patrol route is executed. Though it’s a bit complicated for the newly-minted soldiers at first, after a few weeks on rotation it becomes routine for them. Dozens of bandits are killed on the first set of patrols, and the land is far more peaceful as a result (Road improvements unlocked. See rules).

Gray Coast:

The legate informs the First Governor that he has no right to authorize any invasion without the say-so of the Imperial Council. Though he certainly sees the benefit of removing that particular Korvic stain, he does not wish to hurt the position of his brother-in-law, who is currently angling for a position on the council as he speaks. If the Governor wishes to push the issue, he is welcome to petition the Imperial Council for it.

Blackwoods:

A very curious master sorcerer (and avid traveller) arrives with 20 Prophet’s Guard to look into the situation. He’ll investigate as the year goes on, curious about the mysterious disappearances. He takes the denarius immediately, and begins poking around villages and abandoned farms. He’ll sniff out anything magical occurring for sure (he’s also known for being quite the eccentric back at the capital).

The infantry are dispatched along the roads and butcher slow and relatively lazy bandits. The miserly captives are strung up on crosses along the road, making a grizzly spectacle for those who pass by. Many, however, disappear into the thick woodlands without being caught by the armored soldiers. Despite the problems, the roads are now clear enough for both work and trade to continue relatively unmolested. (Road upgrades unlocked. See rules)

Esk Savannah:

(Taken from Skype, since Will’s a nerd and attending some kind of acronym conference)

20AP towards port.

5AP towards 1 cohort of light cavalry with veteran experience and T0 equipment.

5AP towards upgrading one stable to T2.

15AP towards 1 mercantile district.

Events:

A toothless old kook is running about towns in Riviera, exclaiming to all who listen that there's "gold in them thar hills!" He invites anyone willing to come with him in order to gain an early chance at striking rich!

There's something strange occurring down near the borders of Bahzuuth Jungles. Some unusual activity deep in the jungle...

Imperial Province of The Royal Highlands, Caesaria, 942 NE

Celebrations spread throughout the Highlands as a rush for gems occurred, with the Provincial Government staking itself the largest claims of the veins in the Mountains. The coffers increased substantially, allowing the Government to invest into more ambitious projects while the people reaped the benefits of such a boom in industry. All seems good.

LOZsn1bi9hh0gEULCMAGwlD-1teFSi69QADlTAFpgcpnhLN6XzE7Zjaq1KprO7gzIgYHbh6-Pjqe52dMVJnZ6kudfP8YtyqX9P3m7EDqeRXVwjFsNkkZ1KjGOFH1jDqd648xZMVD

Within the Provincial Capital, Caesaria, bickering occurs as usual, and once again between the Governor and his Second in Command, his Praetor.

“It’s the Emperor’s tenth birthday, and you would have me remain in my own Province, Aquilius?” inquired a bemused Governor to his Praetor, though showing clear signs of irritation.

“Well, you see Your Excellency, there’s this issue we have, you know, the bandits? I think it’d be best if you oversaw the operations yourself.” replied the chief executive loftily, waving a hand about.

“Damn the campaigns, Praetor, have one of the up and coming Officers handle the situation, I’m leaving regardless of the issues at hand. I leave domestic issues in your hands.”

“As you say.”

PROVINCIAL ACTIONS

In light of the young Emperor’s tenth birthday, the Governor himself leads a convoy to the Altaire, letting word know in advance to the Imperial Court of his expected arrival. With him are sixty guards, followed by twenty servants, but more importantly are the newly extracted gemstones packed into the crates lying in the carriages, the best of the selections. Approximately ten-thousand Denarii worth of gems are transported to the Imperial Capital, with the Governor’s intention of meeting with the Emperor himself in Court. (10 AP gift to the Emperor)

Following closely behind is another armed convoy, though their destination differs. They’d follow the now safe Imperial Highways into the Plains of Farlus, heading for the Province’s Capital. Within the crates, once the Governor of the Plains opens them, he’d find within gems from the Mountains of the Highlands. These gems are of the highest quality from the ones currently being extracted, and are estimated to add up to five-thousand Denarii. (5 AP gift to the Governor of Farlus)

THE WAR ON TERROR ARC

Given the recent discovery of the Pirate Conclave, the Provincial Council argue on what to do, but eventually settle upon a choice. A sum of five-thousand Denarii is dispatched to the Academy of Sorcerers with the intention of recruiting their assistance in bandit extermination Campaign. If all goes well and they agree, the Provincial Army would mobilize its one-thousand soldiers for combat, marching out of Caesaria to lay waste to Brigands and eventually the Pirates on their route to the eastern coastline. (5 AP spent on Bribes for Sorcerer support)

While on Campaign, Provincial Officers of the 1st Caesarian Cohort of Light Infantry take the chance to recruit the aid of any Imperial Officers willing to lend a hand in further training the Soldiers to proper standard, at the cost of two-thousand Denarii. (2 AP spent on upgrading Experience Level for one Cohort to Veteran)

The same Cohort also takes the chance to have their equipment upgraded, purchasing sets of armor and weaponry in bulk from the Province of Annor’s Crossroad, shipping it to the Cohort. (2 AP spent upgrading Armor for one Cohort to Basic Leather, T2)

Additionally, the Provincial Court comes into contact with their assigned Legate of the Imperial Legions in the Highlands, requesting for military support in their effort to rid the Province of the Bandit Issue. There is clearly no effort made by the Provincial delegation, but they can at least say there was an attempt.

Word is sent to the newly made Commander of the First Imperial Fleet in Aulus Reach, Governor Sorbath Tielson with the intention of requesting his support against the Pirate force in the eastern coastline of the Royal Highland Province. A full list of the Pirates’ weaknesses and strengths are attached to envoys in Veledon.

“They didn’t even know we existed? Are you serious?”

“Aye sir. Didn’t even seem te know what eh Vellum is.”

“But the legion’s controlled this province for fifteen years! How could a whole Korvic tribe be living here without knowing?”

“Ye’d be surprised, govehneh. Folks in te deep swemp don’ get out much. An’ te legion doesn’t exectly run regular patrols. I’d weger thet wesn’t the only one out there.”

Marcus shook his head. This place would never be tamed, not in his lifetime. Settlements had to hug the rivers to stay in contact with each other, and the more he tried to understand the deep swamp the more he realized just how deep it was. The northwest was still completely uncharted!

“I suppose there’s not much more we can do about it now,” he mused. “You’ve done well, Titus. Very well.” From the walls of Vallum Palus, Marcus could clearly see the boats full of Korvic prisoners heading downriver. On the shore, his young son Lucius was watching too, accompanied by several of the local children. The governor couldn’t help but wonder how a capital child would turn out, brought all the way up here to be raised.

“Keep an eye out for trouble out there, Titus,” Marcus said after some thought. “Who knows if this is really over.”

----------

As the Stalkers garrison the now-abandoned Korvic town of Bronak, Marcus continues to put his effort to use developing the south. Having resolved his conflicts with several other provinces, internal matters can now take up more of his attention. Yet more agricultural investment establishes orderly fish farms in the area surrounding Vallum Palus, bringing a bounty of food and a trickle of wealth to the impoverished town. Remaining funds go towards better equipping the provincial military.

----------

Swamp Stats:

AP Expenditure:

As a reward for their exemplary performance against the troublesome Korvics, Marcus orders new equipment for his Stalkers, from the foundries of Annor. Boiled leather armor, superior bows and steel weaponry are sure to make the elite troops even more effective. [6 AP for T3]

Having been promised that equipment will be provided for the newly-recruited heavy infantry, the governor holds the cohort back for extensive training before sending them off to the marshal. [3 AP for elite]

The Blightswamp agricultural initiative continues, with new aquatic farms providing food for a larger population and bringing more Venandii out of the realm of subsistence farming. [15 AP]

450 Korvic slaves are soon shipped to the capital to be sold. The account of their capture mostly credits Legate Ferio with the victory, as Marcus does not expect capital citizens to be receptive to the idea of Venantii being responsible. [0 AP]

The Plains of Falrus

“What are these white stones?” Aulus would look confused, at the pile brought back to him by Octavia and the surveyor crew.

Octavia would smile, “I am going to study them for a few months and see if the sorcerers know of these and what they come from. Won’t take me long just will require a bit of funding!” She’d wink playfully and smile bright

Aulus would roll his eyes and shake his head, “I’ll see if it fits my budget Octavia. I am working on establishing a sorcerer academy, the plans are being drawn up. It should be done within two years.” He looked down towards his paper’s and looked up towards Octavia.

She was awe stricken, “Whose going to be the head of this academy? Me?” As Aulus nodded, “Oh thank you so much. You know how much it means.”

Aulus interrupted, “However, it will cut into your trips to the capital with me. As I need you focused here.” He’d frown a bit as he saw her face.

She’d stutter a bit, before nodding and continuing “Is this because I threatened to set fire to those peasants?” She’d place her finger in her mouth as she started to bite her nail. “You know I am sorry.. That guy is a wreck! Who does that?” She’d shut up as Aulus raised his finger for her to silence.

“Yes and no, you embarrassed our province with such violent threats. It is appreciated you have such passion for keeping the peace but in times of political meetings, we must keep cooler heads than those we oppose.” He’d take a step back from his papers and look up at her, “This is not the main reasoning though. My magical interest are growing more and more. The stories I hear of these trinkets and these mysterious white stones have been stuck in my head. I need someone I can trust to keep a secret, if any our found it will be us and only us that know.” His face would flash a smile, “I’ll miss the trips, but now as we grow older. It is time we act as adults and bring Falrus to its glory.” The pair would nod at each other.

“Time to get to work.”
