Quite a strange year in the Riviera. A man had come to Potamopolis proclaiming to have found gold in the hills of the upper Riviera, and led a band of prospectors organised and paid for by Andronikos himself. It was, of course, a bandit trap - but luckily Andronikos had sent his cohort of Kataphraktoi to follow them. The prospectors had been saved from robbery by the ruffians, but the old man had gotten away.

Through clever use of hostages, the old man was caught in a Rivieran ambush at the crossing to Annor - him and his 6 companions were captured. While the 6 companions were sent to the capital, the old man (who protested he was an innocent hostage) was pressed into leading them to his band's trove. Unfortunately, during an accident the old man managed to escape, and has since evaded the capture of Rivieran forces. A bounty of 2,000 Denarii was put out in the Riviera for any information leading to his arrest, or for the actual successful capturing of him, and the Governors of neighbouring Grey Coast, Annor's Crossroads, and Plains of Farlus were given as much information as the Riviera had gathered.

Meanwhile, a Sorcerer from the Conclave had come to claim the amulet Andronikos' prospectors had discovered - without compensation. He claimed the law was on his side, but could present no documentation to prove as much! As such, the governor's representative in the matter - his Steward Ioannes - was unable to hand it over as if he were from the Conclave. Luckily, the Sorcerer amicably agreed to act as an independent purchaser of the amulet instead, making it fully legal! A large, fist-sized ruby was the payment, making Andronikos more than happy.

It was a busy year too, though. Andronikos announces an agricultural initiative to utilise the fertile valleys of the Riviera and make the province self-sufficient in food production, and maybe even start exporting some. A huge sum is invested - 40,000 Denarii. Within the year there should already be an increased volume of crop production, bringing some 4,000 more Denarii into the Governor's coffers every year.

6,000 Denarii are also sent to the Governor Gaius of the Island of Salathai. Both Andronikos and Lucretia of Annor were making investments into the Iron mining industry there, to expedite the securing of a new iron supply for the Provincial Guard and the foundries of Annor.

Speaking of the Provincial Guard, Andronikos raises, trains, and arms a cohort of Heavy Infantry that will be sent off to join it. Andronikos finds it of great importance that the Empire maintains a strong army of the provinces, and of great appropriateness that the Riviera, as the richest province, be the greatest contributor. The Riviera's own medium infantry cohort receives an equipment upgrade also, using steel instead of Iron.

Rivieran troops begin a systematic process of clearing the old Highways of bandits, ruffians, and ne'erdowells. Watchposts and checkpoints are set up along the length of the roads in the Riviera, which come from the Grey Coast and Annor and meet to head towards Potamopolis.

The Emperor's birthday! He is sent dozens of caskets of the Riviera's finest wine. Even if he doesn't drink it now, his guests could! And it will get better with age anyway!

Tamaraad Coast

Silus Iullius Lutatius

Tamar is a humble but busy city. Especially now, as the first gold is being loaded onto ships under the watchful eyes of the Governor himself. Accompanied by the ever-scribbling Dolon, Silus quietly observes with an expression of... indifference, as the first gold of the Tamaraad Coast is being loaded onto vessels and shipped off to the Imperial Capital. The Empire its due.

"Dolon, please remind me that I need to talk to the missionaries who approached me last year. They shall receive decent amounts of funding this year. Also make sure that five-thousand Denarii are added to the provincial treasury out of the province's tax. There is a battle to be fought soon, and prosperity is a goal for everyone, so we must do our part." Dolon humbly nods and scribbles more on a fresh roll of papyrus. The hours pass, and in the end, the sun sets, with all ships gone. Silus though still stands, staring out into the sea, towards North. "What a calm evening. Might be bad, might be good." He turns to Dolon and his cousin Marcus who just arrived on horseback. "Better get some rest, we have to catch a ship tomorrow, and the trip might take a while, with winds this still." A rare smile leaves his face, as he heads up again, to the city governor's palace.

STORY

"Governor, there remains the issue of the council. They have sent yet another request for a gathering at one of your peers' estates-"

"Outside of the annual gathering?"

"Yes, my lord. The governor of-"

"Send my regrets to the governors, I shall attend only when is absolutely necessary. Travel to the capital takes me away from duties here, as they should well know. If they spent more time improving their own provinces instead of bickering over insipid titles..."

"... How much of those remarks should I include in the reply?"

"What? Bah, away with you man. Decius shall write the reply."

ACTIONS

AP Pool: 26

Base: +10

Agriculture: +6

Resources: +4

Treasury Grant: +5

Lumber to Salathai: +1

20AP - The two lumberyards of the Blackwoods, the one at the town of Pons Narponicus at the border with Annor's Crossroads and the one at Elona, are upgraded to Tier 2. LET THE LUMBER FLOW!

5AP - Funds are put into the development of a scheme to incentivise assimilation of the local pacified Korvics into true and proper Altairean society. This primarily involves expanding on the already present policy of bribing tribal chiefs and ranking warriors with fancy titles, gifts and more menial assistance with issues facing their villages. Time to accelerate the process, and turn these former enemies into true Imperial Patriots!

1AP - While the medium infantry are fine for policing the roads from bandits, the Blackwoods Rangers can surely do a better job of rooting them out! The Rangers are dispatched into the woods along major trade routes to sow death, mayhem and terror amongst the criminals. As good measure, it is decreed that the families of those found committing banditry, who DO NOT renounce them and report them, shall be subject to enslavement.

Annor's Crossroads - The Avernatus Family

Thirteen men moaned in a dissonant tune, their cries whipped away by the wind, torn from their parched lips like a dying breath. Their bodies were gaunt, bones poking out at obscene angles, sores lining their wrists and legs and neck. They were spread out as if in supplication to a greater power, their hands and feet kept in place by thick, roughly hewn nails. Everyone of them had fidgeted, tried to break free of their iron grasp and with every move the gaping sores widened, their flesh torn and pulled beneath the strain of their entire body. A few still had their eyes, spared by the crows for a later date, when all the other delicacies had been picked away. Those who did stared out blankly at the horizon, flat and distant, guarded by the encroaching darkness of an early winter night.

Ferro stared at them for a few moments, his hands clasped behind his back. “Thirteen men, thirteen bandit groups, and you and your men dismantled them with great efficiency. Excellent work, Scipicus.” He smiled and patted his son on the shoulder. “I’m very proud of you.”

----

Another explosion, a flash of light and a thundering tinkle of clay and bronze raining against a stone wall. Acera peeked around the corner at the hunks of meat spread out around the Millus Bomb, then turned back to her compatriot, a huge smile on her face. “We’re getting there!”

----

Lucretia spends the Winter in Aulus, communicating with her brother, the Steward Gaeus Avernatus through messengers. For the most part, she tends to her health, observes the goings on and sends reams of letters to maintain her political network. The cold settles deep in her bones that year, and one cold, fresh day of november, she looks out across the snowed-down capital of Aulus and sighs. She was not long for this world, the freeze that gnawed at her bones told her that much. She needed to groom a successor.

They also try a second method, a thin bronze outer casing cast around a clay inside, for solidity without sacrificing shrapnel. The fuse of course, it also continually tested for reliability. Better materials, etc… (8AP) (16AP)

The Avernatus family funds the new iron mine on the Salathai islands. Another foreign investment! (9AP)

A shipment is sent to the Emperor with a selection of UNLOADED fireweapons, mainly highly stylized, as well as some fireworks made of small amounts of gunpowder and other chemicals for colors. The Gray Coast

150px-Crismon-symbol.svg.png

Governor Aurellius Laurentian Tentallicon

Claudia Borian had never seen such splendor as her first journey from the Gray Coast, from more than half a league out of Roin Cress. She had heard her matchmaking with the Governor of the Gray Coast would be a thing of great sadness for her family. After all, the rumors about his temperament reached even the minor families. A scandal of great proportions had foundered its way onto the great family's lap, and she was the rice-glue used to fix it. Her family, a small merchant-house in a place where no ships passed and no convoys but the Tentallicons' needed visit, had jumped at the opportunity to marry into a family of influence, even if they were assured to have no grandchildren.

So she was dressed up in their finest gray court robes, and shipped to the capital. Brought to the foundry quarter, where the snickering of the passers-by was just slightly quieter than in the Temple Street or Harbor Districts. Brought to a large, exquisite villa, disproportionate with the surrounding buildings, the sigil of the Tentallicons proudly hung above its porticos, gardens kept trim, guards lining the lookouts and servants bustling about. One almost wouldn't believe that this was the property of a man so fallen from grace. A thin scholar, thinner than he was two years' past, ushered her in. In the outer rooms, the vestibules and sitting areas, lounged officers, either retired in old age or recruited from the border provinces years ago, desperate to escape death, and for each officer, for each sitting room, the number of escorts seemed double or triple. His family had not only allowed his debauchery, they approved, thinking it would counter the rumors. Instead, Aurellius had become the talk of the capital, leaving even many outer family members wary.

The inner courtyard of the villa, past the gardens and venues, was the personal quarters of Aurellius. Save the bubbling fountain in the center, it was completely silent, unfurnished. As if it had never been touched, never seen. Led through the doors at the other end, she stepped into the chambers to meet the man behind the myth.

[13 AP] - The second set of farms is completed [20/20 total]

[11 AP] - The Capital already knows of this expenditure.

[] - Claudia never meets with men other than Aurellius after arriving at the capital (to stifle rumors), and some months later, she becomes pregnant with his child.

End-of-Year Influence - 5

Roleplay

The Governor would return to his Villa at the break of dawn, dust being kicked up from the dusty path leading from the City in the North. Lucius would look worn from his visit to the Capital to attend yet another meeting that didn't particularly concern him as his priorities were set on keeping Esk safe and making it prosper. With some assistance he'd dismount from his horse, brushing off the dust from his tunic he and his small staff would walk back into the Villa towards his office to begin to work on settling matters. Servants would enter the office as they'd sit, bringing each man a cup of water.

"The other Provincial Council is an affair that wastes most of our time, but we have to win favour with some of them so we can sort out our own issues. As such we've had to send two cohorts of Cavalry to assist in the Northern problems, hopefully they'll return mostly in tact to once more deal with our monster issue."

The Esk would send two Cohorts north to join the Provincial Forces, while keeping one Cohort in reserve in Esk.

943NE

16,000 Korvic warriors are making their way towards the river, with carts and horses ready to drag loot from the restful inner provinces they hope to penetrate. It is a plundering army, rather than an invading one. Raids like these are intended to solidify alliances and baptise new friendships in blood and loot. Such is the way of the barbarous filth.

In the far east, the Trinnimecs have lost control of large swathes of their Hearthland territory. There's talk of new states rising there in the power vacuums, as warlords begin consolidating territory and awarding themselves titles.

Off the coast of Blightswamp, ships appear and then then disappear on the horizon. They never come close enough to be properly observed, but it's a surprising amount of activity in a region where there should be no ships at all...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Royal Highlands

The governor's gems are accepted by the young Emperor's liaison. The child seems uninterested in meeting the provincial governor, however, being as he's overwhelmed by all manner of boring dignitaries and statesmen. The Imperial Councillors still makes note of the wealth of jewels on display. The governor is curtly thanked, and allowed a chance to mingle with the less important guests in the banquet hall. He makes a fair splash there, at the very least. (+5 Imperial Influence)

The sorcerers were at the fight, and were more than happy to help after such a marvellous investment into their research materials! The three adept sorcerers talk happily of ow exciting the battle was, and how one of them managed to burn a whole ship! What fun!

The bandits are butchered left, right, and centre on the trek through the mountains. They're not all dead, but the roads are clear at the very least. (Road trade and upgrades now available)

Aulus' March

You build the things. You upgrade the things. The fleet go to the things. Have fun with the Korvics btw.

Blightswamp

The Imperial Capital is surprised that Legate Ferio managed to perform anything of any value at all. His dreadful reputation seems to override any influence gained from the act of brutalising some filthy Korvics.

Despite an increased interest in slaves, most people in the south don't really want Korvics anywhere near them--especially not swamp-Korvics. Even the people at the Circus Hubectus are unwilling to buy the men and boys for fights. Though there's a little interest in the women and girls, as soon as potential customers hear that they're from Blightswamp they utterly refuse to buy. No-one wants a potentially diseased slave. Looks like the Governor is still stuck with them.

Plains of Farlus

A group of master sorcerers from the capital turn up just after the announcement for the academy is made. They make it very clear--to both the local sorcerers and the Governor--that any academy built will be subject to the will of the Conclave. They will be allowed a modicum of autonomy in their service to the province, but all artefacts will be under the jurisdiction of this new academy and the Conclave. If this cannot be accepted, then the Governor will have an empty building.

The search still turns up very little. More of the hills are found looted clean or are simply just... hills. The further inland from the roads they get, the more prevalent the white stones become.

Talking about white stones, Octavia performs her research and discovers that the white stones are definitely stones, and certainly white. They are completely mundane, with the exception of one point--she cannot identify what kind of stone it is. Even local masons are puzzled by it. It's not magical by any means, but it's not found anywhere in the Empire.

Riviera

No information on the old Kook's whereabouts come forward,  but he is finally identified! Luvenis Senem, semi-famous athlete and notorious con-artist, has been scamming people for almost 30 years. Having found no fortune in marathon running and hiking, he took to petty theft to seize honest citizen's hard-earned money. His silver tongue and exceptional energy has kept him out of the hands of the law for now. He's apparently only 50 years old. Who can say where the miserable ruffian is now...?

The roads are painted crimson from bandit's blood! The filth are unable to outrun the thundering hooves of the Kataphraktoi and those that hide are quickly found and slaughtered by the Rivieran infantry. Though not all the bandits are gone, they're certainly no longer a constant threat to the Rivieran merchants. (Road trade and upgrades now available)

The young Emperor is ten years old, and his mother refuses to allow him a chance to drink the Provincial wine. It is sampled and enjoyed by the Imperial Council instead, and it is lauded for its quality. (+1 Imperial Influence)

Tamaraad Coast

The missionaries are relieved to know that their request was remembered and will be well-funded by the devout Governor. They buy ships, supplies, holy books, and hire pious sailors. With the blessings of Neai, they depart knowing that ancestors will grant them success. The news of the mission is sent to Her Temple in Altaire. They take note of the Governor's piety, and continued service to the faith. (+1 Imperial Influence)

The gold finds its way to the capital and manages to get into the hands of the right people. Some of it ends up in front of the Emperor, some in the hands of bureaucrats and Imperial Councillors, and others to "concerned citizens" of high standing. Many important  people make note of this gold-bearing governor. (+5 Imperial Influence)

The Blackwoods

The Korvics are none-too-pleased with the sudden interest in assimilating them. Before they had simply gotten by on pretending the Provincial authorities didn't exist, but now that they're trying to change their way of life! Though there is a lot of grumbling, there are many Korvics that are interested in adopting a culture more advantageous to themselves--the money they are getting being one such advantage. It seems that there's a social divide forming among the Korvics in the Blackwoods.

The rangers stalk through the trees, bringing death to all they see. Eventually, they start running out of bandits. Strangely, more bandits were predicted to be in the woods, but other than empty campsites nothing more can be found. For the most part, the Blackwoods has now cleared its bandit problem.

Family loyalty is a big deal among the Korvics, which unsurprisingly are the majority of bandits. As promised, the families of those who were proven to know their kin's activities are enslaved. More grumbling among the Korvics occur.

In the meantime, the eccentric master sorcerer has managed to finish his incantations among the forests and homes of the citizens, with very few Blackwoodsmen casualties at that (though a few huts and burned down here and there. He is very unpopular among the natives now). He draws out a final, massive sigil on the fields just outside Elona, and with a whisper and crackling white bolts of magical energy, the thousands of sigils light up in unison and locate...

... nothing. There is nothing magical about the foggy woods. This doesn't seem to phase the Sorcerer, but rather make him even more excited to uncover the mystery! He informs the governor that he plans to stay longer. Free of cost, too.

Annor's Crossroads

The tests actually come back with some success! The newest Millus bomb variant seems to actually have a greater chance at killing the person it's aimed at, rather than the one throwing it. There are still a lot of dangers involved with exploding pots regardless of how well designed they are, and none of your troops are yet willing to carry them on a battlefield.

The Sorcerer's Conclave shows some interest in the project though and they show their interest in the form of cold, hard cash. They are willing to invest 10,000 denarius (10AP), provided all schematics are shared with the Conclave.

What is a "firework?" Is it what the woodsmen does when cutting firewood? Strange, alien words, Governor! Perhaps Lucretia has finally gone mad...

The Emperor receives the weapons, and orders them to be brought before him. The young man is excited by the strange, pretty bang-bang tubes, as he's seen them fire before during training drills outside the capital. He's very pleased to have his own, though his mother seems less excited. (+3 Imperial Influence)

The scouts find something in the mountains! Gold! Beautiful, gleaming gold tucked away in an abandoned mine high up in the mountains bordering Riviera! Such riches are sure to pl-...
... wait, this isn't gold. This is some sort of bizarre material that looks somewhat like gold, but is completely worthless. Surely, though, there's someone willing to buy such a silly thing for the humour of it. (+2AP per turn from Fool's Gold)

The blood of bandits flow, and their screams are heard on the crosses that dot the roads. Crows feast on the dead happily. The bandits have now been dealt with, perhaps never to recover...

Bahzuuth Jungles

The fort is slowly restored, and beneath the collapsed stonework, southerner refuse, and scrub, skeletons clad in rusted armour lay in and around the walls. Perhaps its previous occupants? The soldiers of Pius occupy the fort on its completion.

The scouts are sent on their mission and begin to prospect around the Hopeless crags, but find nothing of any worth. The mountains are barren rock with little indication of anything else being available. They are tall, however, and they make note of stonework relatively close by. Perhaps another abandoned fort.

The poor and needy of the city sing praises to the Bahzuuth governor who feeds and clothes them through his sheer generosity. (+2 Imperial Influence)

Island of Salathai

As the restorations are completed on the newly recovered mine, the miners report that there are clearly foundations and ruined supports for even deeper shafts. They don't have the expertise and tools for excavating further, though. Perhaps if they had more knowledge in engineering they could perform such work (+15AP towards T3 iron mine [when you can actually build one]).

The mine is patrolled heavily by the soldiers, and nothing out of the ordinary is found. Perhaps it was abandoned in the past due to banditry, or collapses? Though the bodies aren't covered in rubble, and iron mines aren't known for attracting thieves like gold and jewel mines do. Very mysterious.

The commander arrives, and only slightly drunk as well. (Skype)

The Gray Coast

The Tentallicon manor, just outside the local craftsmen districts and foundries, is purchased at some expense. Cheaper than most due to the smell of smelting iron wafting around the place, and the previous owner being desperate to sell.

Though the Governor's escorts make the capital's gossips snicker, they are surprised to actually see Claudia become pregnant. This leads a number of people to reconsider their previous assumptions, but there are still plenty of rumours abound as such a spicy topic is unlikely to die anytime soon. Some more lurid rumours imply that Claudia's child was fathered by one of the manor's servants.

The Esk Savannah

The scouts travel far to the south, deep into monster-infested territory. What they spot is more of what they saw before--beasts attacking and eating one-another ravenously. Abandoned villages have become impromptu nests for the creatures, and their numbers swell their greatest there.

The most alarming news from the scouts is that they spotted a third variety of beast. About the size of a village, covered in scales, and flying high in the air near the mountains to the far south. Some of the more paranoid soldiers claim that the massive creatures were watching them.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Events

No sign of any old Kooks this year. It seems he's gone to ground due to the bounty on his head.

Messages are sent to the Governor of Blightswamp and the Governor of Salathai! Rejoice! Missionaries (by the grace of the Governor of Tamaraad) will be arriving in their provinces next year! To bring the faith of Naei and the auspicious ancestors will require much work, and they are happy to receive any donations from the provincial authorities!

A message is sent to the Governor of Aulus' March. Apparently it's been penned by a pirate.

Imperial Province of The Royal Highlands, Caesaria, 943 NE

From the Eastern Coast to the Capital inland, crosses are propped up in the hundreds lining the old decrepit Imperial pathways. The wailing cries of the defeated soon follow as the old pirates are now staked upon the crosses alive, left to rot under the sun or be picked off by scavengers. A sure sign to never cross a Highlander. All in all, the Bandit Subjugation Campaign had been a tremendous success, not even a single death was reported among the ranks while hundreds of lowlifes lay in chains or dead in ditches and on crosses.

Fairs and festivals sprung up throughout the Province as the people take to the street to celebrate their recent victory over the brigands that would prey upon them. Elated that the Provincial Council had taken notice of the common people's plight, hundreds flock to Caesaria to enlist into the now famous Cohorts while those with careers work with more enthusiasm and zeal.

With the ports on the shoreline now being rightfully under Provincial control, the Council mulls over the restoration efforts needing to be taken in order to return these seaside cities to their past glory; they estimate that within a year’s time they should be able to amass enough funds to refurbish the recently seized pirate haven.

The Governor made his return to Caesaria downtrodden, having wasted a fair portion of his wealth in order to appease uninterested Imperial Capital Nobility, nevertheless, he reassumes his position, dutifully working away at improving his Province.

PROVINCIAL ACTIONS

Under the overseeing Governor, new Provincial Public Projects are funded in order to better organize the mercantile aspects of everyday life. The roads leading from the interior to the coastline are refurbished with way-houses for caravans transporting goods to and fro- While within the Capital, the Markets see a major boom in activity and renovations as funding and population grows exponentially. [25/25 AP into Mercantile Districts]

The 3rd Caesarian Cohort of Longbowmen (Light Inf) is recruited, trained and mobilized for an upcoming operation. They spend a good part of the year training extensively while shipments of premium equipment are ordered in from the neighboring Province of Annors Crossroad. [500 Veteran Trained Light Infantry/Longbowmen with T2 Equipment Recruited - 4 AP]

A general call of assembly is sounded, gathering all Caesarian Cohorts at the northern border of Aulus March. No formal declaration of intent is issued to any onlookers, but when ready, the Cohorts march northward into Korvic territories at a rapid pace.

A flurry of diplomats are sent out from Caesaria, contacting all nearby Provinces upon the matter of trade in order to establish links of commerce between themselves. It is expected for maritime trade to take place within the next year once the ports are renovated and ready for use. [Annors Crossroad, Aulus March, Farlus Plain, Blackwood, Riviera.]

After the Battle of the Collapsing Falls, in which the Provinces had secured a costly victory against the Korvics, it was more or less business as usual in the Riviera. In order to compensate for the losses of the battle, Andronikos orders the training of 2 cohorts of steel-clad heavy infantry. Furthermore, he very generously makes a donation of 14,000 Denarii.

For the Riviera's own provincial army, another cohort of Light Infantry is trained and equipped with steel weapons and boiled leather armour. The operations to hunt down the Old Kook last year had proven the need for a more mobile component of the army to combat both bandits and potential enemies.

With the roads cleared, Andronikos orders their upgrading. A great many workers are hired to begin the paving of the currently dirt roads. These paved roads will certainly prove a boon to the Rivieran economy, facilitating trade and travel and assisting mining and production by easing and quickening transport.

Tamaraad Coast

Marcus Galerius Lutatius

Marcus Galerius scratches his chin, showing himself mildly displeased. The reason was simple. He was to travel to the provincial governor's meeting alone. Not even Dolon with him, because Dolon stuck to Silus like the stench to a beggar. And Tamar had a few by now. So he stood on board of the ship, eyeing the harbor of the city as the ship slowly departs and the rowers begin moving the big hunk of wood through the quiet waters off the coast. Silus has decided to stay back in the Tamaraad coast, simply due to the fact that he was aggressively investing almost the entire budget of this year into one thing and one thing alone. Building that blasted Goldsmithy. All of it, in one swoop. No brick should be amiss, not anvil and hammer forgotten.

"How did he say it...? For the prosperity of the Tamaraad coast, for the prosperity of the provinces AND for the prosperity of the Empire." Marcus grumbles to the captain, who looks mildly confused. "Well. At least I get all the comforts he has. Which are glaringly none, I hate his overly spartan lifestyle. Do you have some wine on board at least?" he asks the captain, who nods and calls over a crewman to bring the representative of the Tamaraad governor some wine. Whilst not cool wine, it was wine at least.

Blightswamp

Mye2u8C.jpg

Marcus is forced to lock himself in his office for two weeks to protect himself from his spoiled harridan of a wife. Though she hates the food, hates the accomodation, hates the weather and the people, the last straw is that their son Lucius hates none of it. Without informing her, the governor has allowed his seven-year-old to go on a long hunting trip with some of his loyal Venandii.

By midyear, Lucius has arrived in Bronak, where the trappings of Korvic life still decorate every stilted walkway and muddy house. There, the Venandii teach him of life in the vast swamp, and of how best to move through the terrain without being seen. But Lucius is restless, and they do not stay there for long. Towards the end of the year, they journey north along known waterways to see the Green River, where the civilized world abruptly ends. The boy looks upon the ramshackle Vallum Frigus, where Imperial soldiers hug their tiny patch of drained land. And finally, the trip across the province takes him to the Green Bay, where the plague-racked port of Pago Esuriit once stood. It is not a place to linger.

On the way back to Vallum Palus, the adult males are separated from the group of captured Korvics, while the others are told that a buyer has been found for them. Once out of sight, they are butchered and buried in a ditch, while the women and children are brought back to Blightswamp. There, they will work the catfish fields for the rest of their days.
