The Plains of Falrus

“Ha. Of course the Conclave is requesting that. Why would I think any differently?” Aulus had a look of anger on his face as he returned home from the Meeting in Aulus. The golden fields of grain glistened in the sunset as the horses made their way down the dirt roads. “We have more important things to worry about. Cancel the construction for now while I adjust our budgets.” He glared at two of his advisors before they nodded taking off towards the construction of the Sorcerers academy.

“Sir, we need to think about raising more forces. We lost all of our men in the last fight.” Marcus Octavian, his lead military advisor spoke up to break the silence that had come over the group. “I know you are upset at the loss of life, however this is what being a leader is about. Balancing the good with the bad, many people would happily give their lives for the Empire and more importantly, you Governor. Your families history in Falrus is well known.” He stopped as Aulus looked back, his eyes lit with a fire that he had not seen before.

He turned back to his horse, after he had silenced the officer. As the group rode in silence the rest of the way. Aulus would handle this how he wanted. Giving back to the families who had endured the pain of loss. Just like he endured with both his parents and his brother.

The ruins of the death cult is explored, searching for anything that is of value and something of historical context. Octavia is sent with the group to help determine anything of magical note (1 AP)

Horses are gifted to the Imperial Capital, not needing them this year anyways. Aulus saw it as a way to gain some favor incase he needed it in the future to fight off the Conclave. (-1 Horses)

Island of Salathai

Stats:

https://goo.gl/zgisg9

Actions (Turn 4):

0 AP: 1 unit of iron shipped to Riviera, to be split between business partners there and in Annor’s Crossroads.

1 AP sent to Blackwoods for lumber

2 AP: A donation is sent to the missionaries from Tamaraad, with Gaius’ blessing to spread the faith.

[20/20 AP]: A section of Farmlands on the island is restored, to help feed the growing population. (5 AP → 20 AP, investment of 15 this turn)

[2/25 AP]: Construction begins on a new mercantile district in Salath. (0 AP → 2 AP, investment of 2 this turn)

3 AP: Word is quietly put out in the capital and provinces that an anonymous party is seeking to hire people skilled in espionage. In the meantime, begin training the veteran galley crew in the basics of espionage: intelligence collection, analysis, deception, interpersonal skills, problem-solving, and additional combat training, both clandestine and open.

0 AP: Six galleys are dispatched north, to scout out the island of Oarsbrekk. Four of them are to make landfall, without drawing attention to themselves, and gather as much information on the lay of the land as they can. Each of these crews shall be assigned a portion of the island to reconnoiter. The other two galleys will verify the location of the pirate port, get a rough estimate of the forces present when they do (as well as the date of the confirmation), and make a note of any other coastal settlements they can find. All six crews are to return to Salathai and report to Gaius either by the end of the year or once they have completed their tasks, whichever comes first.

0 AP: Former Commander Decimus Cradus is put on trial under, inquisitorial procedure and in secret, for sedition. He is found guilty, and swiftly, but quietly, executed, for working to undermine the interests of the Empire for his own personal gain. The body is taken to the eastern side of the island and burnt in a pyre.

0 AP: A letter is sent to the emperor, informing him that Decimus has been found guilty of sedition, and that the situation has been resolved. The letter also includes a recommendation that the other fleets, or at least their commanders, be evaluated to ensure their loyalty as well.

0 AP spent to send letters to the Governor of Aulus’ March, inquiring as to whether the Marshal might be able to spare an officer or two from the First Fleet to transfer into the Fourth Fleet for a period of three years, to help oversee the retraining of the men of the Fourth. Given their previous commander’s seditious tendencies, who knows what damage he may have done to the fleet.

0 AP: Gaius begins drawing up plans for a new training program for the Fourth Fleet:

  • Men in training will be put through:
    • 17 hours per week of physical training
      • 9 of these hours will be focused on combat training, both on land and sea.
      • The other 8 will be focused on calisthenics, obstacle courses, and team sports.
    • 10 hours per week of individual skills training
      • Includes problem-solving, financial management, and communication.
    • 20 hours per week of military skills training
      • Includes seamanship, military fundamentals, security procedures, damage control, leadership, shipboard duties, military justice (cases go to the overall commanding officer of the fleet - the Governor of Salathai), military courtesy, obligations as members of the military, discipline, and expectations for the conditions of their ships and quarters, which are to be inspected twice per month when in port, at random times.
    • 15 hours per week for on large, constructive work projects.
    • 34 hours per week for individual time, to work on areas of individual concern
    • The remaining 72 hours per week is allocated to sleeping and other nighttime activities.
  • Instructors will be pulled from members of the Empire’s naval forces who accept the offer to teach on Salathai. If need be, instructors for some subjects may be pulled from the civilian populace.
  • Men in retraining will undergo this program in a period of three months.
  • Men in their initial training period will go through the program in a period of one year.

Once instructors are found, the men of the Fourth Fleet will be rotated through this program six crews at a time, until all men in the fleet have done so.

3 AP: Gaius sends word to distinguished veterans of the Empire’s fleets, offering to hire them as instructors in the training program.

A triumph! A great victory for the empire against the scurrilous forces of Korvic ruination! A Korvic tribal confederacy was driven from the field of battle and slaughtered in their thousands! Loot from the camp and battlefield are paraded through Altaire’s Shrine Road before the effigies of the ancestors! Their women and children are in chains to be sold to the arena or crucified along the roads for the perverse pleasure of the capital’s citizens. The Governors of the provinces are invited to a great celebration in honor of the triumph...

... the triumph of Orbus Kelrum - Legate of the First, Fourth, and Fifth Legion- of course! After relieving the local militia, Orbus engaged the enemy forces and crushed them with almost no Imperial losses. Wasting no time, he and his forces crossed the waters of the Collapsing Falls and took the great valley beyond. Named in his family’s honour, the ‘Kelrum Valley’ has been transferred to the authority of Aulus’ March.

The contributions by the Provinces are noted, however. (+5 Imperial Influence to anyone who sent soldiers to the battle)

A new state has formed in the Hearthlands. Declaring itself independent from both Altairean and Trinnimec rule, the Auldun Commonwealth is expanding rapidly at the expense of the Trinnimecs. Their forces comprising mostly of lightly-armed mobs, they cut a bloody swathe across the Hearthlands, fanatically touting “freedom, equality, and brotherhood.” The Imperial authorities denounce them as ‘brigands with banners squatting on rightful Altairean territory.’

Dire reports pour from coastline villages on the Crimson Sea. Pirates are raiding and pillaging without mercy or restraint. Fast ships baring the insignia of the extinct Third Fleet strike coastal towns and merchant vessels without warning before disappearing across the horizon. No-one seems to know where they come from, as they sail into the sea rather than follow the coast like most ships.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Royal Highlands:

The trade treaty may be placed on hold, as ships are raided liberally by the vicious pirate bands of the Third Fleet. Though they don’t attempt to retake what was apparently their previous port, they cause great havoc along the shorelines of the Crimson Sea. (-5AP and no AP from sea-bound trade this turn)

Annor’s Crossroads:

The newest prototypes of Milus Bombs are still not ready for combat use, but are definitely getting close to something worthwhile. The Sorcerer’s Conclave approves of the advancement however and sends another stipend for its further development. (+10AP towards Milus Bombs this turn)

Though the Conclave shows interest in the idea of oversized hand-cannons, they aren’t willing to invest in any more projects until the first one is completed.

Riviera:

Reports come in from the coastline! Pirate ships from the north have slipped past Blightswamp and the Gray Coast; they are heading towards Riviera! Be wary, Governor...

Blackwoods:

More Korvics are drawn to assimilation from the programs of the governor and his wife. Though many more local Korvics grumble about how Brecca’s tribe seems to be given far more attention and privilege than the other, less important tribes. Nasty slurs about her character ripple through their savage communities.

The Sorcerer thanks the governor kindly for his donation, and promises that he will definitely probably find something soon! He has a few theories, but he’s waiting for another mass disappearance to look into them deeper.  In the mean time, he’s been interviewing local blackwoodsmen about the disappearances and so far only has a 20% death-rate among them! He’s hoping to drop that a bit lower when they get around to trusting him.

Tamaraad Coast:

The donations are sent to the grieving families. They take the money thankfully, but they cannot mask their bitterness at how the glory seems to have been taken by this “Orbus” fellow, and no-one is talking about the Provincial forces lost. There is some clear resentment, there. The charity does not go unnoticed by those in the capital, though. (+1 Imperial Influence)

The gold is received once more by the capital, and they are happy to take it. The generosity of the Governor is truly one to be admired...(+5 Imperial Influence)

The priests approach the Governor once again with a request—as the gold was a gift from the ancestors, they desire a large temple built in the vicinity of the mine. It is a way to honor the contributions of the fallen soldiers that now rest there and the wealth that blesses the Province. They request 10,000 denarius for materials and engineers from the capital. Silus is beginning to get noticed in the Altaire. The priests speak of him fondly, and their flocks listen intently...

Pirates of the Third Fleet plague the coast of Tamaraad and disrupt trade (-5AP this turn, no AP from sea-bound trade this turn).

Blightswamp:

5beqctI.jpg

The missionaries from Tamaraad begin their work preaching to the people of Blightswamp. They prod and scorn the locals for mistakes in their shrine-tending and prayers. Every small transgression from orthodox tradition is elevated to a grievous sin.

The Plains of Farlus:

The exploration of the hills finally turn up something useful. As the prospectors dig into a hill far off the beaten track, they are surprised that it didn’t contain ruins, but what appeared to be a whole building buried beneath the earth! (Skype)

The explorations into the moldy town reveal that it is definitely an abandoned town. But could there be more...? (Skype)

Island of Salathai:

The missionaries are gladdened by the donation from the clearly devout governor! However, the people are less pleased. They grumble about the mainlander Neaists proselytizing on their island, and those who are not as faithful as they claim are getting restless when being publicly declared ‘heathens’ by the fiery clerics.

An unassuming man – possibly from the capital – answers the call for people skilled in espionage. He doesn’t give his name, but shows his skill by breaking into Governor Gaius’ office and leaving a letter of acceptance on his desk. He also infiltrates the staff and learns the schedules, home addresses, and favorite wine of everyone in the building.

The information of Oarsbrekk is handed to Gaius by the end of the year. Some of it may be surprising. (Skype)

The Imperial Council answers the letter, as the Emperor is not yet of age to tend to such things. They are surprised at the commander’s treachery, but accept the resolution and punishment. Not completely though, as Decimus had quite a few friends in the capital. Among them are a number of wealthy traders who were very interested in his career, apparently. (-5 Imperial Influence)

The sailors, so poorly disciplined, are not happy with the sudden change in their daily routines and drinking time. Serious discontent is spreading through the fleet but it has yet to find an outlet. Only time will tell if this spirals out of control.

Several veterans from the Imperial Fleet and the First Fleet answer the call, eager to get back into the service, or just make a few denarius on the side. They will certainly be necessary if the Governor hopes to get the Fourth Fleet under control.

Bahzuuth Jungles:

The Governor of Bahzuuth’s name is well known among the poor of Altaire. Whole poorhouses have been fed by his charity, and the forgotten unfortunates who scour the crumbling streets pray for his health. Beggars whisper his name to one-another, wishing that he were on the Imperial Council rather than the greedy lords that occupy their chambers.

A number of skilled surveyors come to Bahzuuth as a favor from some mining guilds in the Four Isles of Arai. Sadly, they can’t seem to find anything in the Hopeless Crags. Not that they dared go too far in, as they spotted a terrifying creature the size of a village perched on a mountain top. If it was like the monsters they heard plague Esk, they had no desire to linger there.

They did spot some ruined stonework deeper in the jungle, however. Perhaps that information would please the Governor?

Aulus’ March:

The pirates of the Third Fleet seem to avoid the March, as the first fleet is docked there. The merchants are still too afraid to step out of port, however. (No sea-bound trade this turn)

The lands of the Kelrum Valley are transferred to the authorities of Aulus’ March. The people here who were not enslaved, didn’t run, or weren’t taken by the soldiers are cowed enough for Imperial rule to take hold. (+30,000 population, 2 Farm stacks).

(Dev’s Expenditure)
29AP in total:
5AP towards a T2 mine,
5AP towards reinforcing 4 cohorts of veteran medium infantry,
9AP towards Mercantile district,
10AP into 2 regular cohorts of steel-clad medium infantry.

All players who didn’t get their posts done in time will have their AP carried over to next turn.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No old kooks are spotted this year. Perhaps he’s retired...?

Tamaraad Coast

Silus Iullius Lutatius

“Took you a while.” Silus notes, as his cousin Marcus unmounts from the horse he has ridden for the past few weeks. “Time well spent to get boring landscapes for my eyes and sores for my butt.” Marcus counters, not looking too pleased. “If I had known that pirates would take control on the Crimson sea and raid all the provinces, I’d have stayed away. But then again, you needed your documentation. Tried to do my best, I think the allocation of the funds was decent.” – “Yes, yes, you did well, cousin. Let me see... mhm. Yes. Did you go to that parade?” – “For the fallen? No. I was in Esk already.” The two continue to chat, as they walk through the main gate of Tamar into the bustling city. The coast was attacked by the pirates, fishing villages and hamlets robbed dirt poor. The city itself, fortunately, given its natural defenses, was spared. Not that it would have been easy for the pirates in the first place, but blockading took less effort and was very profitable for them too, to catch those first few merchant ships that did not know better.

“So... that ring on your finger. That’s new.” Marcus peeks at Silus’ right hand where a small golden ring glimmers in the afternoon sun. “The first piece of jewelry from the new goldsmith. As a token for myself.” – “Very humble, eh? What about the old families of Tamar? Aren’t they getting their grubby fingers on all of your achievements?” – “No, not this time. I have the support of holy men. And I will stay true to our ancestors. This province, their home, my home, our ancestor’s home. That is what I am protecting and improving. Bring back the fortunes of old days. And the old families know that very well. So they let me do.” Marcus hums at that answer, saying nothing for a while as they walk across the bustling central plaza where a cohort of light infantry is preparing to march out. “Going to war, are we?” Silus laughs and shakes his head. “Not on the seas with these men. They are to stay here at home in the province and finally make it safe to travel again. Rooting out bandits and the likes. The Imperial Legion present here should guarantee our safety against external threats, but internally, we ought to make our own efforts.”

A minute later Silus closes the door of his office in the governor’s palace, then to take a seat behind the desk where his cousin already sat down. “Dolon, fetch me some wine. Cold if you can.” – “So thirsty Marcus?” – “The Esk Savannah and the Tamaraad Coast are not known for their snow or harsh winters.” Marcus replies to Silus’ unnecessary question. “And I do not drink wine all the time. I had water on the last stretch here. Because there was no wine to drink.” Silus merely chuckles and begins to read through a few scrolls Marcus brought him. The latter picks up a piece of parchment himself that lies rather loosely on the table. It’s quiet as they read. Dolon who humbly enters the office again holding a mug of wine and two cups almost spills it as Marcus shouts loudly. “You ordered ships from the capital?” Silus looks up with furrowed brows. “Yes?” – “And they actually said yes? To build these three Biremes?” – “No, no. We don’t get the ships. We get the equipment and the materials for the ships and the Nautae.” – “Nautae? Never heard of them. Who are they?” Marcus looks confused as Silus stands up with a rare smile. “Oh, you will like that. Come let’s take a walk.”

Imperial Province of The Royal Highlands, Caesaria, 944 NE

“That so?” mused Septimius upon being informed of the battle’s outcome at the Collapsing Falls. He appeared uninterested in the actions of his fellows governors, content with keeping to himself and his province. His peace would be broken just moments after, for a ragged tired man bursts through his chamber’s doors, pursued by his guards.

Offering the proper Altairan salute to Septimius, the man exclaimed the following news; informing Aetius of the plight brought upon his newly reclaimed coastlines. Pirates and raiders from the Third Fleet decimated their way through the various coastal settlements, plundering vital resources from the Province and making their way off into the open sea with their loot.

“Have all returning Cohorts redirect their rendezvous points along the coastline. We have to secure our settlements and set up perimeters to deter anymore opportunistic predators.” the Governor stamped his seal upon several enclosed documents, dispatching them to his messengers to be sent throughout the Province.

PROVINCIAL ACTIONS

The returning raiding Cohorts are dispatched alongside the coastline in order to further deter any seaborne raiding from Privateers and the likes. Watchtowers are established in key locations along the coast with pyres of logs ready to be lit as signals for the others when enemies are sighted.

To further reinforce the protection of the coastline, the remaining three galleys are sent out in a group to establish a patrol route along the coast, outfitted specifically to be able to flee at first sight of the enemies once sufficient information has been gathered upon the subjects.

The Provincial Government begins the reconstruction of its old coastal ports. Workers are lured to these sights at the promise of gold and protection, while the necessary resources are imported or manufactured in the Capital. The population of the smaller settlements along the coast are assimilated into the Port-towns to serve as their first citizens and establish an economical center. Maritime trade is expected to resume once the Pirate threat has been dealt with. [40 AP spent into rebuilding the Ports]

The groundwork for establishing the second Tier of Engineering throughout the Province begins. [1 AP into Tier 2 Engi]

The benefits and social privileges granted to Brecca’s clan are extended to the noble lineages of other Korvic groups in the Blackwoods. Indeed, they invited to a public feast amongst Blackwoods high society at Elona. The Gray Coast

150px-Crismon-symbol.svg.png

Governor Aurellius Laurentian Tentallicon

After a year of doing nothing, presumably to force the Imperial Capital ironworkers to remember that their iron shipments from the provinces were quite generous, Aurellius’ villa issues more commands.

[27-1{Maintenance} This Year + 26 Last Year = 52 AP]

[40 AP] – Grade 2 Military Foundry Constructed [prev. Grade 1]

[12 AP] – A Mercantile District begins construction.

[] – The Imperial Council is notified that the Marshal has not done his job in clearing out the Empire’s roads, as the Gray Coast is still plagued with bandits and Korvic raiders have not stopped appearing every so often. Additionally, the Coastmen cohorts are preoccupied defending Imperial mines and shipments, so cannot clear the roads themselves.

[1 Iron resource] – Coastmen iron once again flows to the capital, though this year, not nearly as much.

[] - A second child, a son, is born, and the now-one-year-old firstborn, though a daughter, is paraded around by Aurellius at a yearly Tentallicon family reunion.

The mood in Vallum Palus is sombre: of the many men sent to the collapsing falls, none returned. None can say that the Blightswamp has shirked its duties. Nevertheless, the citizens know what their relatives died for, and understand. In time, the blood of other Altaireans may protect them. They say their prayers and return to their slowly-improving lives.

The missionaries from the far south are quite the curiosity. Most of the locals in Vallum Palus are fairly dutiful in their worship, but the Venandii are less so. While they are nominally brothers of the faith, Venandii are often so isolated that their religion differs on innumerable tiny details. The visitors will be hard pressed to make their message heard among people that have often never even heard of a proper town.

For the time being, Marcus continues to turn his attention to the expansion of agriculture in the swamp. Catfish has proven a successful source of food, as the animals are not affected by the blighted soil and breed rapidly. Nevertheless, under no circumstances could the province be called civilized. Though his Venandii scouts have brought back more detailed information on the region between him and Bronak, the route to the Green River is still far from safe, and the entire western half of the province is completely uncharted. Truly, the legion did the bare minimum when they claimed this place.

Though all investment this year goes to the governor’s agricultural project, his attention turns to a ruined port at the northwest edge of his domain. Clearly, the province does not have the resources to recolonize it just yet. But if it could be reclaimed, it would serve not only as a superior point of export to the south, but also as a civilian forward base, allowing civilization to be brought north, in time. Colonists begin to be gathered...

The Plains of Falrus

Through the halls of Aulus’ manor, his shouts could be heard. The luxury materials used to build it carrying his voice down throughout. Many of the servants were in shock as they had never heard the quiet, level-headed governor yell this much and sound this angry at one thing.

“You found what?” He yelled, the death of one of his own had sent him in the a spiral. “What possible could take TWENTY OF YOU TO KILL. TWENTY ******* SOLDIERS AND A SORCERER. YOU COULDN’T KILL ONE THING MOLESTING A STATUE.” In the moment he took to breath, Octavia stood up and gave him a quick left hook. One that packed a surprising punch. The whole room fell silent. As not one soul in the room knew what to do.

As Aulus stood there in shock, anger and disbelief. Octavia used this as her time to speak, “Now that you’ve shut up for once. I can speak, this thing was not living Aulus. One slash deep into its chest, still kept coming. We had to hack, hack and keep hacking the limbs for it to stop.” She took a deep sigh, “I regret not setting that thing on fire, but my magic would’ve cost us more lives.” She looked down, tears forming in her eyes. “He gave his life for me, as did Sepius. Blame me and me alone. I was careless, it was a long day.” The tears were streaming down her face, unexpectedly. Aulus came and took her into his embrace, to comfort her.

“It is okay, I should’ve known.” He brushed his hand through her hair. “These people are my duty to protect. Death hits me the hardest, especially when I order it.” He let go of her, as she looked up and nodded. Before he turned to the rest of the group. “If I catch a word of this leaving this room, you will not return to your families or loved ones. This is of the upmost importance.” He stared down into each one of their eyes. “I will not let loose lips endanger the Empire’s fragile existence.” He turns towards Octavia, “We have something else to discuss in private.” He’d smiled, as the pair left through the heavy wooden doors. “Together is how we will spend the rest of time together.” would be the last few words heard before the doors slammed shut.

“I don’t like it, Your Excellency. He didn’t even give you his name! Just a letter on your desk. How can you trust this man to train spies loyal to you?”

Gaius turns to his scribe, looking grave.

“The man is a spy. Trusting him with no evidence of his loyalty would be the height of foolishness. However, just because I cannot trust him, does not mean that I do not need him. My knowledge of espionage is extremely limited, and I need better sources of information than I have.”

Julio shakes his head. “But--”

“Enough, Julio. This conversation is over. I allow you a significant amount of leeway in questioning me, out of respect for the length of our acquaintance, but in this matter, I will not change my mind. Trustworthy or not, this man is necessary. Still, if it makes you feel any better, I will be increasing security in the Manse, to help prevent him or other spies from gaining access to things they shouldn’t be able to.”

“I… see. I am glad to know that you are not blindly trusting him, but I still feel that--”

“What did I just say, Julio?”

“I-- yes, Your Excellency.” Julio quiets, still looking disgruntled.

“Now then. I believe there are some men for me to interview. Have them sent in, will you?”
