Brave New World

Spring-Summer of Year 1601

The year 1600 was eventful, the state of Europe had caused many to flee their once home for the New World. However this New World was not devoid of hardship, in the rush, many arrived ill prepared for the perils present in this new land.

The new colonists arrived in early summer of the year, getting straight to work, establishing the foundations of their colonies. Many wonder who else took the fateful journey to the New World. Even more wonder what waits beyond the meager borders of their settlements

No news from the Old World has arrived since landing

*Henry Hudson on the Halve Maen (Half Moon), entering the New Amsterdam Harbour*Afbeeldingsresultaat voor painting of henry hudson

As the men of the Halve Maen entered ashore, they set out to look on the surroundings of what would be the sights of New Amsterdam.

As the ship went further up the river the Hudson, they encountered Indian tribes who traded them fur pelts.

After their long journey, they made it back to Amsterdam, where the Fur pelts became a huge hit on the market.

After a few years, with enough investments from wealthy families, Governor Verhulst set out with his expedition, on a quest for riches and fame, backed by the West India Company. Families and lone men signed up for the trip to get away from their lives in the old world, on their way to the new world.

Upon Reaching the place of Hudson’s discovery, they set off to build their settlement. After the initial first houses came a port that was build from the timber, next came Markets and Barracks and lastly they fortified their settlement with wooden walls.

Once their walls were up, every eligible men was conscripted and armed, put on training duty to form a Militia, 500 men in total became the New Amsterdamer Militia.

It became clear that the area they had settled did not contain Fur, so Governor Verhulst send out five groups to scout and claim territory around the new Settlement.

The proud Andalusian's, looking to create a better future for their people found refuge on the edge of the Pontchartrain and on the banks of the Mississippi. With water on both sides it provided a great defense from any would be invaders. The leader of the expedition, Rashid Mustafa, laid ground and declared to his people that Allah would have not created such fertile lands had he not intended for the Ummah to inhabit. As such, work began in setting up farms to get through the first winter. Rashid was a clever administrator back in the Kingdom of Morroco and first sought to create great walls to protect his people and bazaars for them to work in. Within the year the colony had stone-walls, a flourishing marketplace and enough farms to feed them well into the winter.

As soon as the colony had become self-sustaining, he sought to scout the surrounding area for anything out of the ordinary.

St. Lawrence River, Early Spring 1601

The Don-de-Dieu, at the head of a small fleet, slowly sailed down the rough waters of the St. Lawrence, the tide strong and pushing against them as they sailed further up the river. Her captain stood uneasily next to the ships helmsman, carefully scanning the land surrounding them on either bank of the river, hints of worry showing occasionally through his focus. After about two months of hard sailing across the great Atlantic ocean they had finally reached the lands he had set out for, a great relief as his gamble to brave the stormy winter weather of the sea had payed off. Of course the risk was necessary in his eyes, as if the colony would have any chance of surviving the coming year they would need to begin farming as soon as possible to prevent starvation. Though none of that mattered, he thought to himself, if he could not find the land he had laid his eyes on his previous journey the year before. Upon his previous trading trek under his uncle, he had spied upon a great hill along the western banks of the St. Lawrence, near an area where the land encroached upon the river and it narrowed. The river and hill had enticed him, as he had figured the hill would provide a perfect spot for a fort and the St. Lawrence provided a natural harbour for trade. The natives they had traded furs with that year had called the land “Kebec”, though he had never learned of it’s true meaning or origin. He sighed as he stepped to the railing of the ship, a great galleon he had brought to protect the fleet and fledging colony, and closed his eyes. He had promised all of his followers that these lands would bring them great riches through trade and a chance to free themselves of European politics, yet without his perfect spot how could ensure any of that? He shook his head quickly, dismissing the notion as soon as it came to him. Of course he would find the spot once more, it’s not as if the land had just disappeared in his months of absence. His men would just have to put up with a few extra days if sailing, what’s another week spent sailing after so many anyways? Yet lady luck appeared to be his side, for as he had returned to his helmsman to get the pace up, he had caught sight of the great hill he had dreamed of since he returned to France. Quickly he laid a hand upon his helmsman’s shoulder, pointing out the land and having him slow the ship to a standstill, the fleet of three behind them following suite. As the captain walked back to the railing once more a grin now beamed across his face, as he looked down not upon what was the empty lands they would soon settle but the soon to be prospering colony of Quebec that he had envisioned and dedicated his wealth to. He could already imagine the praise and riches he would receive from the French King, the name ‘Samuel Champlain’ becoming famous across all of France.

Captain Samuel Champlain overseeing the establishment of Quebec, Late-Spring 1601

Quebec, Mid-Summer 1601

The previous months had been a whirlwind of activity as the very foundation of the colony had been established. Upon first landing upon the shore, crews of men began working upon establishing a port to direct the transfer of people and goods from the ships to the mainland while the remaining colonists began tilling the land and preparing to plant seeds brought from the homeland, the beginnings of farms on the southern edge of the colony. Once the port had finished and the ships aside from the galleon were able to properly dock  the work crews were split between establishing a lodge for forestry and fur trade just north of the main landing and building permanent settlements, with extra hands being brought in from the fields as the hardest of the work was finished. By the time mid-summer had approached the colony had shown good progress with most dwellings complete, the farmlands in the south beginning to reach harvest, and even a small marketplace forming as people began to settle in. Of course for Samuel this was not enough, he had come to establish a centre of trade in the New World and Quebec was still a mere fledgling in comparison to what he intended. So, scouts were sent to the South following the St. Lawrence to hopefully make contact with natives willing to trade, and focus was put upon expanding the marketplace to deal with any trade and bring in more riches.

Floride Française

France

Southern Florida, Spring 1601

The French colonists had made landfall at the Southern tip of the Floridian peninsula. They had all but exhausted their resources and food supplies and had to come ashore. They took to their rowboats and paddled to the coast. Andreas Piccard, whom the aristocracy had chosen to lead this expedition to the New World, felt the pressure upon him. As they slowly inched closer to land through the choppy waves, he was bombarded with thoughts, concerns, and even regrets. "If this journey fails, it will be on me. This climate is nothing like I thought it'd be. What if bloodthirsty savages inhabit these lands?"

He snapped back to reality only when he had heard the sound of one of the sailor's hurling off the side of the ship, liquid dribbling from his mouth. He turned to the man, still engaged in deep thought. I must not think this way. If I have any doubt now then I have already admitted defeat. The sailor practically had his face in the water as the small vessel rocked back in forth. He reeled back in, wiping the residue off his face, before nearly throwing himself off the rowboat again, hurling into the water. These men are counting on me. I cannot let them down. Andreas had suddenly found himself renewed in resolve and courage, more than he knew that he had within himself.

As they pulled the rowboats up the beaches and away from the tide lines, they wasted no time.

Within weeks, their first permanent settlement had taken shape. Several lodgings, wooden walls lining the perimeter, a weapons foundry, a barracks,  and outlying farmlands. He had called it Couronne. The name land around - Floride - due to its flowery nature. They expected the worst and prepared. Finally, after more than two months at sea, Andreas had something to be proud of. Yet, with this new settlement, he knew he could not sit idle. His people needed to prosper rather than merely get by. After a survey of the area, he believed he already had a grasp upon the region's shortcomings. Issues varied from inadequate trees for lumbering, pesky insects and alligators, and to concerns about agriculture. They would have to make do.

Couronne, Floride, Summer 1601

In an effort to sieze as much of the coast as possible, explorers were sent out to the east of Couronne. Andreas knew that having such uncontested access to the Atlantic could prove beneficial in the near future.

“Damn, we really escaped.” Yep, they’ve been saying that for months now. Too be honest they thought they would’ve been caught and killed in battle or, if they were captured, hanged once they reached land. Maybe thrown overboard if food was scarce. Which it was, Marcolo’s Brigands flopped on their asses immediately when they reached dry land and for a couple months simply partied with what they had.

Luckily for them they had a few that weren’t as mentally handicapped, a couple actual colonists riding with. And these pirates sent them off to do well… Colonist stuff of course. Though unluckily for them, it’ll take a while before any crop is grown and so the pirates are left on an island basically stranded, trying to round up whatever food they could get.

Well it wasn’t all horrible, Marcolo set himself a chain of command once they landed. Dubbing captains of the frigates, sloops, and the lone corvette. Though that’s all he did, simply the captains. Marcolo was a man who had freedom in his heart, so he left those to their own freedoms. Only asking that they scout the land to see if those Venetians landed or any other colonists landed.

Meanwhile the actual colonists… are doing useful things. One notable fellow has rose above the others, being a charismatic lad and such. He also seemed well-versed in farming and this kind of thing; he was so experience some thought he had done this before!

Anyways the man got all these colonists rounded up and ordered them around, telling a few to search the land while another few begin to start tilling the soil. They had only a few cattle (as well as the other cattle) to plow with but together they got it done. It wasn’t much but hopefully it got them through the year, maybe not the pirates though...

Former Prince of Tyrone Donal Mac Consaidin stood firm on the city ramparts. He looked inward, at the massive expanse of Jungle. His people had fled a starving and oppressed land. It's true he and his immediate kin were free. But they knew the English would come for them. As sure as they knew the sun would rise every morning. And so Donal and many like minded Irish aristocrats gathered what they could. And they departed in no loud manner. No, they fled. Their servants were left behind, to fend for themselves. The nobility and wealthy merchants were the only ones left. It was a nobleman's dream in a sense. But someone still had to clean the latrines.

They had banded together, on what seemed the tip of a large continent. They had no idea where they were, but it was certainly not Ireland. Monkeys screamed in the trees, and swung around. At night in the early days settlers had hear strange growls. They didn't investigate. Instead they had a almost manic devotion to where they landed. It was situated in a bay, and free of the all encompassing jungle. They had cleared away the nearest woods, and used it to build. Eventually Dyflin as they came to call it grew. But they never pried further then Dyflin's permitter. They were all scared of the jungles, and had not a pike or musket between them. And so they became heavily entrenched. Great stone walls surrounded the town and it's natural harbor. They were built nearly three times as big as the town itself. They were planning on growth.

For now they were content to stay in their walls, and live. The Commonwealth was formed around this time. It was an association of purely aristocrats. The former Earl of Tyrone Donal would lead them. But their would be councils for every aspect of life, to ensure efficient governance. The town was very small, and control was complete. There would be no land grabbing or hoarding of resources. They would grow rich, but together......

Vinland:

The Land of Meadows

scandinavian_commonwealth_flag_by_rarayn

The Vikings had discovered Vinland long before any others had. The old sagas of Eric the Red and the Greenlanders both spoke of this land near the coast of Greenland. They had settled there long before Christopher Columbus had even discovered the continent. These tales had long been passed down generations of Danes, both Kings and Peasants alike had heard stories of this rich land that they had called Vinland.

Now, the fleets of Denmark-Norway had set sail once again. Prince John, Duke of Holstein, the Brother of King Christian VI, was leading the settlers on their travels. A young man who had been named as a suitable Viceroy for these far off lands. They set off from Skagen, sailed to the Faroe Islands, then Iceland, and lastly Greenland. And now their final trek from Greenland to the believed Vinland was coming to an end.

John smiled as the coastline approached, being the younger brother of a King was never something that gave you much recognition. You had to achieve your own things, and John had certainly done so. His Brother had originally intended to send him to Russia to marry the Tsar’s daughter, but John had insisted to attempt to travel to Vinland instead, and he had been successful.

BBJnNa4n7ajhLuvRaYCpqw2Mky6VM5PGHo-FziGUFmsAbWaKKjkn9eKY-fPBPPc2asU8CvfwKHIba5_IVBBx8whRBjV5P2e1F3EirUl0wAxfRakGe07RtejOJ9kL3vOcKpLFtsMv

The settlers were eager to settle the lands, and construction of the first farms went swiftly, then came the port, and lastly the barracks. The island they had landed on seemed easily defendable with the ships they had, no one would be able to simple march an army here, they would have to land with ships.

“People of Vinland!” John announced from his manor, the settlers had gathered outside as requested for his speech. “We have done it! We have settled Vinland! The area of our ancestors! This is a great pride to all of Danes in the world, you, myself, even the King!”

The people roared in support of John, “Prince John! Prince John! Prince John!” They all cheered ecstatically.

“But now come the hardships.” He carried on. “It will be tough to settle this new land, but we shall do it! We are the descendants of the Vikings! We are the Danes!”

The crowd cheered even louder now, surely there was no end to this joy they were feeling.

Trompsylvania
Virtus libertas est, et independentiae
Afbeeldingsresultaat voor statenvlag

Former Dutch Admiral Cornelis Tromp and his small fleet with followers slowly sailed into the large bay they had found. The "Chesapeake" the map said, but being Dutchmen, they soon 'corrected' the spelling to "Tjessepieck". At the start of the bay they found a river feeding into it, the land was nice for settling on and the soil seemed fertile. They anchored the ships and went to investigate this new land.

The settlement had been constructed quickly and almost nobody was required to live on the ships anymore by the end of summer, something they had aimed for, as they all knew how cold life aboard could be in the fall and winter. Tromp sent out colonists to claim some of the surrounding land as well as the mouth of the Tjessepieck bay, nobody knew who or what lived around here. They had heard news of the so called "WIC" sailing off to America from Amsterdam at about the same time Tromp and his followers left Rotterdam, so who knew. There'd been rumors about people with feathers on their heads looking at the Dutch settlers from the treeline at twilight, but there hadn't been any contact yet with these strange feathered humans.

Administratively, Tromp and his topmen weren't entirely sure yet what to do with this new land. They knew they wanted a republic, but how this republic would work wasn't sure yet, they also still flew under a Dutch republican flag, but that wasn't of their biggest concern currently... THERE'S THOSE FEATHERED HUMANS AGAIN.

Explorers are sent out across land and sea to see if there's other humans in the region and to possibly figure out what those featherpeople are. Some are sent to scout the coasts, some are sent across land and some are sent to travel up the rivers in the region, like the Susquehanna, Potomac, James and Delaware.

The town of Nieuw Rotterdam develops fairly quickly, with a market and wooden pallisade already being built. A sizeable militia of most men in the town (500) is also put up, as to serve as a means to protect the colonists if needed. Land is regulated, but handed out for free, there's plenty of it, and there could never be too many farms. The settlers were delightedly suprised when they found wild turkeys, which they thought came from the Indies rather than America, but nonetheless were quick to catch and domesticate.

As the mouth of the Tjessepieck was settled, Tromp's colonists stumbled upon another settlement, much like theirs. After some distant observing they realized these were also Europeans... Maybe there were more people in America than just them... Soon one of them pointed at their flag, recognizing it as the English flag from his time in the navy. They sat around discussing what to do for a while before they simply headed for the settlement with a small band of armed men, wishing to ask why the English of all people were here too. And well, if they were here in America, might as well get some trade deals out of them... [JAMESTOWN]

Spring, 1601

The Captain of the Spaniard colonists, Lord Hernan Cortez III stepped off his small row boat onto the beach. He turned to the rest of his personal guard, "This will be the birthplace of a new land for our people, Soon all of the new world will be under Spanish control! Signal the ships, we need to erect a temporary camp before nightfall. After today, the work will begin on a new town. I shall name it... new Toledo. Now hurry!" He clicked his fingers, surveying the area.

From this fragile beach haven, the jungle took root; guarding and watching. He would need to send scouts out to survey the area, some would return but he knew the jungle would be dangerous, some... might never return. The risks his people would take to achieve dominance in their rightful land. He stood, and watched grimly as the row boats began to dis-embark from his small fleet. Spain would be borne anew in this foreign country.

Summer, 1601

From his Governers palace, Cortez gazed over the busy settlement of New Toledo, they had received news that a sister colony had been established in the Caribbean. Trade would be set up between the two, but not yet, there was much work to be done. The Spanish Explorer had ordered work on a port, a market and wooden walls to better defend his people. Yet there was still the issue of food supply, that could be remedied once he established full contact with the fellow Spanish colony, of course.

He had sent colonists out into the unknown a month ago, there had been news, success. Metals had begun to flow back into the capital of this new Colony, which would prove beneficial to Spanish Military ambitions in the area. Yet first he needed to better secure his position in this new world...

The Story of the Founding

After months at sea and a great hardship, Japanese dissidents led by General Iyoyushi Tokumaka, finally make their landing on the eastern coast of what they call Mekishiko.  General Tokumaka declares this land to be held in the name of the Emperor. As a ceremony marked the breaking ground on the colony, an eagle was seen flying over the colonists.  A previously unseen animal, the eagle captures the attention of all. It swooped down and flew back up with a snake in its arms and perched on a cactus. In amazement, the colonists agreed that this should be the symbol of their divine favor and of their new colony.  A flag was made by the artisans. The brave men and women begin to build a better land for their children. The first settlement is named New Edo.

The day was coming to an end. The caravan of ships, led by the lead ship, the Santiago, had been following courses and maps more than a century old, written by a man from a previous expedition, the man who discovered these mystical lands. The ships, were finally coming into the view of the green, mountainous island. With a shout of “Tierra! Adelante Caballeros!” from an unknown sailor, immediately all the men working throughout the ship scurry to the sides of the ship, rejoicing and embracing each other, for their long days at sea have ended. The ships, after reaching a couple hundred yards, drop their anchors, and 5 rowboats are suspended from the deck, and dropped onto the almost clear blue water. This was to become the vessel for Spain into the new world. The group was led by a man, dressed in fine robes and chain, anxiously examining the mysterious coast of this unknown land. The ships, all make for a white sandy beach, with a thick, dense tree cover, behind it. Finally, the ships come to almost a complete stop, beaching themselves on the white beach. All the men, from simple sailor, to renowned merchant and noble, direct their eyes to the man in fine robes. The middle aged man, after pausing for a moment, leaps over the wood of the sides of the ship in an almost surprising athletic maneuver for a man of his age, and makes a light splash into the shallow water as he briskly walks onto the dry, white, sand of the island. The men in the boats follow almost immediately, happily eager to explore this unknown land. Immediately after making it on dry land, most the sailors drop down on their knees, praying, others crying, other grabbing fistfulls of sand and throwing it up, to the skies. The leader, would extend his arms towards the sun, and proclaim: “Gracias Padre! Tu palabra va ser la ley en esta tierra! Con tu voluntad llegamos, y con tu palabra nos quedemos! Esta tierra es para el Reino!” With those words he would place a wooden cross on the sands, and would later proclaim that the cross shall never be removed, and the men would return to their ships.

The next day, the colonists would begin to clear a opening for their houses, and after that, their lives.

The Colony of Hanseong

1600

hwasung_011.jpg

Che Ji-Sun and Kae Ji-Sun worked next to one another driving a hoe into the dirt. Having nearly finished the field, Kae felt his sister tap his arm “Brother! Look it’s Pae Seung-Su!” the two children look over at their leader and a few of his men walking the path between the fields, clad in their armor.

The two children watched in fascination. Sae Seung-Su gestured over past the farms “I’ll need you and your men to garrison the outpost. We don’t yet know what we may find out there. Understood?” he asked. The captain nodded, and he and his men went out.

Pae Seung glanced over at the two children, they scrambled to get back to their job. He chuckled as he turned to head back into the colony passing under the gatehouse and the stone walls that protected it. Men armed with hyeopdo stood watch over the walls and gate, professionally trained pikemen.

He walked through the small town to the shore looking out onto the horizon as the sun rose above ocean, the colonies single corvette floated just offshore.

He didn’t know what lay in wait for him or his people, but he would have to do everything in his power to see them through.
