1916 (Early Months)

Central Powers Meddling

(Apologies if you did not post in time. However some ground breaking developments ensue in the later months of 1916. Start planning! And if you missed post PM me your actions for early months of 1916)

Early 1916 marks the start of a whole new phase in this Great War. Brazil capitulates with barely a shot fired. Spain and Russia enter the war, on different sides. Portugal is in a desperate state, barely holding on. And still the war grinds on, though many plans come to a culmination this year……

In Kent Naval Yards several German zeppelins are spotted. Most curiously, one has two German albatross attached to what looked like a retrofitted zeppelin. They begin to drop bombs on the facilities and ships, doing some damage. The two Albatros fliers detach, and make strafing runs. However a english pilot in their new SPADS beats both, making him a star in England. The curious German zeppelins withdraw.

In France the army, navy, and civilian populace is at a breaking point. Verdun falls and Paris is under siege. Morale plummets as more army groups opt to desert, not fight, or mutiny.

Russia marches into Germany, directly threatening her sovereignty in the East.

The British Royal Army Medical Corps carries out the first successful blood transfusion, using blood that had been stored and cooled.

The Romanian football club Sportul Studențesc is founded in Bucharest.

In Munich, German automobile company BMW is founded.

1159407.jpg

United States Marines invade the Dominican Republic.

Spain

Memorial Day is passed! It will become a national holiday and time for remembering past great deeds.

Supporting Alfonso and staunch catholics, the Conservative government is sworn in. They assume the majority, and begin to persecute the war. However many Republicanist, Entente supporters, and Socialist are outraged. They refuse to be drafted, and strike across Spain. It is no revolution or civil war, but they are discontented. In Catalonia the situation seems more dire.

POW camps have the first flux of Portuguese prisoners. Conditions are squalid and the troops [mainly civilians] are relatively well treated.

Great Britain

The Boer Commandos are shipped to Portugal, and start to amass victories.

Knowing her ally is coming, Portugal continues the fight. Mainly guerrilla bands led by Commando teams.

Plans for the MK II proceed as planned. However the Mark I’s showed the many technical problems. It’s a headache for the British and Americans but work continues. The MK II will be improved in all fields, but will perform poorly in offensive actions besides offering good cover.

British doctrine shifts to defense strategy. They begin to do an ‘In Depth Defense’ which is already proving it’s worth.

The Conscript army and Pal Battalions are shipped out on time.

Serbia

Serbian army reforms go quite well, her army being modern, experienced, and well led.

In a move Austria condemns Serbia buys back her rail lines!

Though the head Government was attempting to look benign and reform, it was no use. The Bulgarian atrocities had left a bad stain. Many saw the King and conservatives as ruling by way of the sword.

More Serbians and immigrated Montenegrins take the incentive.

Trying to tidy up the armies fallacies fail. However recruitment goes well as many ex Bulgarian’s join, simply needing the money to survive. (+100k Recruits)

Industry continues as planned.

Though they assume control, the move for Albania is unpopular. Guerilla bands plague Serbian and Greek forces.

United States

The 2nd new deal had already been passed, with some areas not being voted before in the last voting cycle. This remains so, many refusing to budge.

“New Hanover” officially becomes the new name of Nebraska.

Mobilization continues, but shows the U.S unique problem. Every little pen pusher, colonel, or politician had their fingers in the army honey pot. With so much government shut down, and split parties, many orders were contradicted or ignored. Supplies never showed up, some divisions getting only socks, others nothing. All this confusion and mounting raw recruits and the need to train was compounding. Step by aching step the U.S army grows. The new administrations are new, and will take time to feel out their responsibilities.

Discussion about involvement in The great war is hotly contested. Political Parties aside, nationality, religion, and opinion led to differing views. German migrants, conservatives, and others were inclined towards the CP. Many english speaking democrats wanted to rescue French, as she had done for them. No bloody or brutish German submarines had sunk or killed americans. And there was no reason to suspect German aggression. Many were not convinced however. It seemed some would not wait as American volunteers ship en masse to France, much to Centralist supporters ire, they retaliate by sending their own.

Brazil

The Speeches and attempts to reform had big effects on the more moderate rebels. The drifted back towards the Brazilian monarchy and governance. However to others they were offered free school lunches and other slight alterations and saw it as a joke. Perhaps egged on by outside sources, these groups remain persistent. (See Fiddle With Devil Doc)

Central Powers trade deals, and a dissolving army lead to a surplus for the Emperor. As mentioned many army units upon returning from home desert, or demand disbandment. They did not want to be used to kill their own people. About 150k remain many not exactly keen on civil war.

Industry plans continue slightly slower than planned, due to strikes and sabotage.

The growing class of land owning farmers on the Jungle frontier grow, many opting to help in the defense of this new land from incursions.

Thought not shooting to kill, radical Republicanism and Socialism groups are. Initial fights go their way, as docile Brazilian formations get whacked. The fighting in the jungles is cat and mouse, and increasingly bloody.

The Orphanages and Hospitals from Emperor Pedro is loved by his followers and moderates. It will also help for all the wounded men and orphaned kids about to come in….

Poland

The Socialist and Nationalist are both gathering propaganda about the war. Both twisted it to support their ideals, with conflicting reports of battles and heroic actions. More and more Poles flock to the republic.

With such large demands on the Industry, Poland does actually being to make a surplus of equipment. But there was going to be harsh prices to pay. Rationing and lack of goods in Poland proper is now every day. As the army is sustained, it’s citizens are left to starve.

Many recruits defect to the Poles, or otherwise make their way to join. (+30k Recruits)

Germany

With no demand for resources for the navy, and allied shipping, Germany is managing to continue basic war production. THe blockade was becoming strangling but for now she remains afloat.

The Brazilian deal is passed. If the Entente does not actively block Brazil trade ships the Central Powers will get a link to South American markets.

More and more women fill the domestic roles of men and take pride in it.

Ottomans

Reorganization of the army under european standards begin. The Ottomans having successfully employed a grand assault doctrine like the French. Their armies did good when large amounts of artillery and men worked in concert.

Enforcing the new law is a hard matter, but is appreciated.

Some muslim families take the incentive and grow, however there really isn’t the funds for it.

A new class of Ottoman fliers begins, under their German planes and tutelage. They have much to learn.

The Expansion of oil wells continues slower than ‘a thousand’ wells by summer. The Ottomans first work on improving the infrastructure.

Work on the Berlin-Baghdad rail line begins again.

“Portugal, cease this fighting, you are only acting as a proxy to a war Britain wants you to fight. They send you men to teach you how to die. Why would you fight against a united Iberia that can withstand the treachery of Europe? Drop your arms cousins! Come to recognize yourselves not as Portuguese but as Iberians! Are we not cut from the same cloth cousins? Did we not create an Iberian controlled world before THEY took that away? The way Britain and France pushed us out of land we had invested in. The land Iberians had conquered dofully from the barbarians. Was it not Iberians who founded the New World and was it not Britain and France who took that away from us! You do not fight for Portugal my cousins, you fight for a war Britain and France WANTS you to fight! They do not care if you die! Look to Bulgaria! Look to Greece! Look to Brazil! Each country was promised by Britain and France and look how they fell. They supplied them to let their men die and their country to be ravaged. Men of Portugal. Nay. Men of Iberia. Let down your arms and join us! See how we treat the men who have surrendered to us, with kindness for Spain does not see you as an enemy men and women of Portugal, we see you as cousins once of the same Roman province of Iberia! We bleed the same blood! Join us! Together Iberia can prosper forever!” - Alfonso XIII in a radio broadcast to Spain and Portugal as well as printed on newspaper articles.

A new flag is designed to incorporate the symbol of Portugal and the symbols of Spain together. The flag designs are sent to the Royal Palace for review. A reporter invited to watch as the royal family and members from the parliament discuss designs for a flag. The theme that is chosen is to reflect the joint kingdoms and houses that made Iberia. The final result that is debated on is reviewed in Parliament.

The organization Real Federación Española de Fútbol (Royal Spanish Football Federation) is established with the goal in mind of providing an expansive football network across Iberia. After the organization is made, Alfonso XIII invites all of the politicians to watch a football game at a local elementary school in Madrid. When press arrived to document the occasion, the king stated, “Any Iberian, rich or poor, should enjoy the game of football. My sons play it, these children play it. I encourage even the members of Parliament to play it. In the game of football, the event alone whether a player or observer, is great fun.”

Actions Taken:

Propaganda is spread out across all of Iberia on supporting a united Iberia. Portugal should lower their arms and not be the subjects of a British proxy war. Better to be an Iberian than a British and French pawn. Hella work is put into this. Mucho worko.

A new flag design is debated on out of the two proposed to Parliament. (I like the second one the most) (Would be adopted after the war if passed)

Spain attempts to raise another 500,000 soldiers for the war.

OUTRAGE – The British Reply

The Right Honourable David Lloyd George, representative of His Majesty’s Gov’t.

’To the Portuguese people,

Do not listen to the lies of the Spanish king. If he wanted to embrace his Iberian brothers, he could have just done so: Portugal is a free country and you have allied to us of your own will. Instead, he invaded you. He raped your land, murdered your people and betrayed his supposed brotherhood. Are these the acts of a brother, a friend, a comrade? They seem more to me more than of a gangster.

And look at the contempt with which he holds Portugal. He thinks you will surrender after 6 months of fighting. He does not at all recognise the Portuguese national spirit that fought the might of Habsburg Europe and Napoleon. He thinks he can manipulate you with kind words – when both you and I know he is a man who inflicted a war of aggression onto you. Frankly, if I were Portuguese, this letter of his would give me only yet more will to fight: this insulting, absurd and hypocritical tract would only serve to inspire me to fight the enemy who thinks me unmanly, cowardly and stupid. We in Britain know better: that Portugal cannot be cowed by mere Spanish arms.

Forever your friend,

D.LG.’

Kingdom of Greece

(King Alexandros I)

Internal reform

The old regime has fallen. All Entente support within the government is disbanded with the firing of all politicians. And the King abdicated. In his place, Alexandros I ascends to the throne and a new government is set up within two weeks. Population Growth is continued, After Greece’s surrender hundreds of thousands of men returned home including Alexandros I himself, who had been fighting in the war at the front lines and was badly injured in the final weeks of the war whilst fighting to hold Bulgarian trenches with his Greek division when the Ottomans sudden charge killed most of the defenders.

Badly wounded Alexandros got as many men together as possible, grabbed equipment and as many wounded comrades as possible and ran like hell afterwards he collapsed and was sent back to Greece to heal. Greece was without a King for about 3 weeks, and the returning military under Alexandros's generals took it into their own hands to make sure Greece didn’t fall apart. Though it is obvious most returning soldiers are still angry at the surrender and waste of their dead comrades lives.

But because mostly everybody in Greece liked Alexandros there wasn’t any imminent threats. The army of this new Greece sends some military generals to Germany and observe the battles on the eastern front as well as to view German military training to improve Greece’s Military in an effort to form a new Military with training and tactics mixed from Germany and Greece. When Alexandros finally gets released from the hospital he is greeted with thousands and thousands of people lined up filling the streets and sidewalks of the surrounding street blocks. As far as the eye could see people were chanting and cheering and crying for Alexandros. He spent time meeting with as many of them and chatting with them as he could, and many females excitedly tried to kiss him and hug him.

When Alexandros got back he formed a new government as quickly as he could picking the best people possible. Among this new government there was a new movement resurfacing in Greece to bring back Latin as a secondary language to Greek. It receives lots of funding and is to be taught more frequently in schools and used in public alongside Greek, this funding was from the new government and King himself. In a project to bring back old Greek society. The second part of the project involves building in the traditional old Greek style. Though with a few slight new changes to work in a modern world. Alexandros personally felt that every Greek not only in Greece itself, but also the Thracian Greeks, and the Anatolian Greeks who were being liberated from their Ottoman and Bulgarian rule was betrayed by the surrender and that they shouldn't have backed out of Thrace. It seemed the majority of the public supported Alexandros I as their sons were the ones killed for nothing since Greece in fact lost the land the king had said they would own. Not only that, but The former King didn’t even fight alongside his country, and Alexandros was right, if they would of kept fighting they would of come out victorious and then every man who died would of died for a purpose greater than themselves. But now it just seemed that they died for an old man who sold them empty promises.

So Alexandros started to form a new elite unit of the most battle hardened soldiers Greece had to offer, and gave them even more training, the general that had gone to observe how Germany trained its soldiers started coming back and their techniques of training soldiers was put into this new unit as a test to see if it would work well. All of this done is relative secrecy, he didn’t want his countries neighbors knowing everything he was doing, Meanwhile he continued doing his daily duties as King but also going out and meeting with commoners and the poor and handing out food.

(Alexandros meeting with supporters 1916)

Economic actions

industrial growth within Greek industry is slowed but still being worked on, especially in arms and artillery manufacturing and development. Farming in Greece picks up even more with the returning troops needing work. Though mostly every soldier that returns is still employed as the army wants to keep every soldier it can get.

The economy starts to look up as men come home to their families, more and more babies are born and jobs are widely available to most citizens. Just not the disenfranchised Anti Centralist soldiers. Of which only a couple thousand are able to get jobs as the new regime is weary of them and fears that they will be a threat to them. King Alexandros Talks to his government about his idea to upgrade and update Greece’s infrastructure including rail lines and communication lines. which would if passed by the government make many jobs and help in tax collection, military access of the country.

Plus he also had hired a train company to build him a giant train with as much armor and guns on it as possible. Not nearly as advanced and armored as other countries had but for Greece it was never before seen. Lastly a fund is set up to repair old Greek arenas and build new ones. Greece would start to focus on its athletic programs and the Olympics. Greece would have its own Greek Olympics like in the days of old, Hosted in Olympia for Greeks to take part in. Where the ancient stadiums will be repaired or remade to have competitions and hold many spectators. As well as a new law is enacted allowing all people the chance to have their debt to the country wiped away if they work in some of the arenas and fight for their freedom. Otherwise the state will use Criminals and Prisoners of war as fighters for the public to watch and bet on.

Kraljevstvo Srbije

The second half of the year rolls round, and another six months of internal going-ons follows. The summer kicks off with a general election being called, as several parties kick up massive propaganda campaigns in a desperate struggle for power. The first round of elections and debates go through, with the main competitors to the top job being as follows: AcuT7JzS5Mn7m0ce1KFoU7a5x8bOfpVFVqkgKiQ0ocmIx_tzzCvxJYjIqdEIrpcJpme1UHmGIh_tsFO_FMOgf4Kh6aVjIIAtJbdWp9zxi2nIEPzR0Lr-hNrRPFpzMdT-0HOf1Wn9

The currently ruling Serbian Radical Party put forward Nikola Pašić to once again run in office, owing to him the many reforms that’d been conducted under the reign of Peter I, as well as the current stability within the Kingdom itself. It essentially promised more of the status quo, with increased - and almost sole - trade with the Central Powers being a key point. This is criticized by opposition parties however, who claim that the increased reliance on the likes of Germany and - more prevalently - Austria Hungary would lead Serbia into an economic alliance that they could never leave nor change. It also somewhat neglected the minorities of the Kingdom, subjecting them to just the benefits of the constitution (can own land, property, right to work etc) but no other reassurances.

axo9sUNn_OtMnyP1Ll9jS8_eNDYqXajsGf-3qShI7b3bUKBTwTy0HYl9b0mUnGQyrdEU58l34VDdjJcN3MUjbw_B0J-nauXZE9pnIvIq80U5TL_CKM9sEhhp5ua7cGuBPmIcR0Xa

The further left Serbian Progressive Party put forward Stojan Novaković, who was the cheerleader for decentralization of power from the government and crown to local governments in order to better represent minorities. He also wished to uphold Austrian hegemony of Vojvodina and Bosnia, citing that the honourable King Peter I had signed away claims on these provinces knowingly. He was a staunch opponent of Pan-Slavism, and against the invasion of Albania, whilst also thinking the Bulgarian peace terms were too harsh. Whilst he was rather popular with the Bulgarian and Albanian minorities (only certain cooperative regions in the latter were allowed to vote), he faced heavy backlash from conservative Serbians, as well as the far-right.

The final candidate put forth was a controversial one. Montenegrin-born Major-General Vasko Aleksic, a famous war hero in the Kingdom for his speech against the Bulgarians whilst receiving the Order of Karađorđe's Star, had used his fame and immense popularity to catapult his way through the ranks of the military, and now to kick off his political career. His party, the National Slavic Centralist Party, was a new one, and so voters couldn’t really decide which bench - right or left - they should be put on. The main points of their campaign were a mix of both:30yr8VlUTvjEZLPySMpC6_jPAVkZErzTXyXDjJE-JF_eE9bugFnWcpFN-l8--o8PCdNwMh8XQvxw92GNoiqUFuqeAAT0OG_zF6WYuxSIJHbd5DhvFMFqMgPZ4IF54mtICiYx9gSD

  • Bulgarian and Albanian citizenry will benefit from the same rights as Serbs and Montenegrin Serbs offered forward by the constitution, that being the right to work, travel and own property within the Kingdom. All companies must ensure equal work opportunities, and, like the military, must not discriminate based on background nor ethnicity.

  • The Orthodox Church will be re-established into local authorities, but not intervene in federal or state laws or trials, lessening the bond between Church and State whilst not abolishing it. Those of other religions, notably the Muslim population of Albania, are given freedom and support to emigrate to other nations such as the Ottoman Empire should they feel persecuted for their views. However, emphasis for tolerance is focused on those born of Slavic blood, regardless of creed.

  • Pan-Slavism and unity among Serbs and their brothers. This is a main talking point, as it undermines the crown’s signing off of claims to Austrian held, but ethnically Serbian land. This is accredited to Point 17 of Article 4: The demanding of the unification of Serbs in Greater Serbia, under the pretext of self-determination.

  • Emphasising the duty of the state to provide for its dependencies, and the duty of individuals to the state.

  • The reduction of powers of the crown and the increasing of power to the head of the government whom is elected by the people. The crown would still be able to attend and debate laws, and has the right to offer advice to the head of state, or directly intervene only in times of national crisis.

  • The centralization of the government, with state law overriding local provincial laws. Education, though encouraging various subjects, will be the same across the board regardless of location.

  • Returning to the liberalized reforms of 1909, before King Peter I’s government shifted towards Austrian appeasement and abandonment of the constitution.

  • Nationalization of the railroads and industries, purchasing of industries from private sources unless approved of by the state.

  • Farmers have the right to work their own land on their terms, cutting out the middleman, meaning trade between the supplier and the state is easier and frictionless.

  • The encouragement of women to work, with their hours and pay being equal to that of a man’s should a man not be available to be employed to do said work and the woman not have underage children who are dependent on her.

With the general displeasure at the current government’s ruling, it’s unlikely that Pašić would see a third turn in office, though the same could be said about the Progressive party, who’d upset the conservative populace and undermine the nationalism that’d been building for the last four years. The National Slavic Centralist Party was a dark horse, and potentially one that the voters would risk a chance on. The latter also has the backing of many military men, including the ageing Field Marshal Putnik, due to Vasko’s military past in all three Balkan wars.xl9gZo9eX7_Os6R3QMuMNaXPRvv7u8puGNEpjOsXOIZlnK-1RVAT317D1LVUWL4_yqCJsh0XzHy3XyNqjom3AmYrHeOBSNxGao_tKdelxy6FpRlHAGZUurPH70k_iCZWSfLziBBd

Meanwhile, Serbian military occupation of Albania and by extension Northern Epirus continues, with garrisoning troops receiving strict orders to stick to the rules of engagement and work alongside cooperating local police forces to ensure stability. Those caught committing crimes or treating the civilian populace unfairly face court-martial. Several skirmishes break out with Albanian guerrilla fighters, who then retreat to the hills afterwards. The military’s response to this is to use the overwhelming numbers to work to quickly turn the attacks into counterattacks, and use overwhelming fire and the numerical advantage to chase the enemy out. Commanding officers are ordered to write about the success and disadvantages of the Albanian tactics honestly, before sending them to Serbian High Command. The reason for this is unknown. The Greek government is invited to take over the occupation of Northern Epirus whenever they are ready, as detailed in the Treaty of Thessaloniki.

The port cities of Albania go under heavy industrialization, many tankers being loaded already with Serbian goods to be exported to the world. Several shipyards are commissioned for construction also - the kingdom may eventually build their own navy.

The reform of the army went through well, and soon Bulgarian troops are implemented into the roster, boosting the total number of men to 550,000, meaning the total number of divisions is at 45. It is emphasized that there are no solely Bulgarian divisions, in order to defend against potential mutinies and the like.

Somewhere in northern Serbia…

Gavrilo was awoken with a start, as rifle fire went off rapidly for around 15 seconds, before ceasing to a halt. The young Bosnian Serb sat up with a start, before relaxing his shoulders and yawning. Final week of their training, he thought, standing up and slipping on his boots. They might last just as long when it all kicks off, if they’re lucky. He got up, coughed and walked out the small shack, seeing men loading and reloading their rifles repeatedly, practicing formations and building mock fortifications both in between buildings and in the ground. A few hundred men, training here and several other places just like this, across Serbia over several weeks. Some spoke Serbian, some Croatian, but all were beat into shape under the unofficial military training of the Serbian army. At the head of this was a military man simply known as “Apis”. He’d never met him, but all the orders came from him. The Bee, he thought, followed by a small laugh. “The Greatest Rebellion in History” organised and orchestrated by a f*cking bee. He could’ve picked a better name.

He walked over to the arsenal, where some recruits were loading up a horse and cart with the standard - multiple rifles, a chauchat, ammunition and a couple of grenades and pistols. After six months of supplying and delivering, the uniformity of it all had for the most part gone as stockpiles of captured weapons began to run thin. Now damaged weapons (missing buttstocks, rotting wood etc) were a more common sight in the deliveries, none of them Serbian or German made however. It’d almost be time to leave, having spent the last four weeks helping to train the recruits. He dreaded going on that damn supply route again, all paranoia and tension. He, just like all the nationalists he was dealing with, just wanted the green light already. But they all knew it’d soon come.

He came across a young Bosnian, screaming about the futility of the cause and the certainty of death, with a small chance of success. Gavrilo stormed over and quickly punched the Bosnian in the gut, kicking him to the ground. “What are you scared of? The Austrians? The Hungarians? Why?! Do you not want to live freely?”

The young man groaned and whimpered, still hysterical. Maybe he’d run a few too many miles. “What about when they overrun our barricades, when they send us running to the hills?!”

“We’ve thought of that. The fight doesn’t end if you lose your homes. We’ve set up strongholds in the country, in hills and mountains. Should we lose the cities, I say, we can go where we want, to a place they’ll never find, and fight on from there. Plague their supplies, slaughter their garrisons. We’ll surprise ‘em with the victory cry! Unity or Death!”

His shout was echoed across the camp. “UNITY OR DEATH!”

It’d been many months, this rag-tag bunch of hotheads being beaten into a militia, and from a militia to a competent fighting force. Not as numerous as the Empire’s men, not as trained, but they had a cause. An ideology. They were scorned and oppressed and had nothing to lose. Princip really didn’t, his illness was getting the better of him daily. But he wouldn’t die to a disease. He’d go out on his own terms. If anything, that meant more to him than the cause itself…

---

ACTIONS

  • General election called.

  • Albanian tactics to be responded to with counterattacks using superior firepower and a numerical advantage. The results are to be sent to Serbian High Command.

  • Greece is invited to occupy their part of Albania, Northern Epirus.

  • Albanian ports and shipyards are industrialized. First Serbian goods are exported navally through interned Albanian convoys.

  • Bulgarians are integrated into the army.

Siege of Paris, June 6th, 1916

The sound of artillery filled the air machine guns chattered and men cried out as the battle raged in the outskirts of Paris. The trap had already been sprung, revolutionary forces fiercely battled with Loyalist and BEF troops across the city. Charles’ regiment had made good progress, Loyalist troops were surrounded everywhere, the city would soon fall.

“Continue the drive north east, we must link up with Germans. The republicans are routing in droves. It shouldn't be long until the city is ours.” Charles ordered, the men were quickly notified and the offensive continued.

Fighting continued, every street, building, and room was pried from the hands of the defenders. Some fought fiercely, the smart ones threw down their arms and surrendered. Finally, the Germans were spotted. Charles’ men, clad in red cheered as the Germans entered the city proper. The day would be theirs!

The Fourth Republic

The establishment of the Fourth French Republic was a great step forward for the 2nd Internationale, but the job was not finished. Only a token portion of France fell under the control of the republic, this most certainly would not do. Every portion of France would be liberated from the tyranny of the Republican Government.

Following the victory at Paris, and the establishment of the Fourth Republic, Jean Jaures a prominent socialist politician, a popular figurehead, and a staunch anti-war supporter was unanimously named head of state. Not long after his rise to power Jean named Paris a global seat of the 2nd Internationale, and promised an end to the war under the new regime.

(Head of State, Jean Jaures)

Spirits were high among the army and citizens alike. The Fourth Republic was no doubt the more legitimate of the two states. It had a message, a reason, and a will to continue fighting. The loyalists were shattered. The capital of Paris lay in revolutionary control, Verdun encircled and lost to the Germans. The revolutionary government had secured a treaty with the Central powers, a far more lenient one that would have taken place under the old government.

Propaganda posters become common place, an effort to consolidate power is launched as well as one to win over the hearts and minds of those within and outside the French Republic. Leaflets dropped from German planes urge Republicans and Loyalists to lay down their arms. Under the new regime there will be peace, prosperity, and bread for all, Verdun has fallen, Paris has fallen, there is no use fighting.

Cogs of Industry

The core of pre-war French coal and steel industry lay in the north east, the border regions, the areas under revolutionary control. In the previous years, it had been ravaged by war and destruction, something had to be done if the revolution is to survive. Jean Jaures and the newly established government order the immediate re establishment of the industry. Any factory is commissioned to dedicate itself to the production of arms and war material.

Armée de Libération Nationale

The Armée de Libération Nationale or the National Liberation Army was founded upon the birth of the Republic. Consisting of a moderate core of well-trained previously Republic aligned soldiers and a moderately sized chunk of foreign, the National Liberation Army gets right to work supplementing their ranks. A massive drive is launched, irregulars are given basic training by the more seasoned officers. Large recruitment drives are launched, playing off of recent Republican failures, and Revolutionary victories.

In addition, the higher ups of Revolutionary command realize the necessity of consolidating their gains. Huge defensive projects begin in key locations along the front in order to repel possible Republican counter attacks.

The French Countryside, 1916

The NLA Aurora, one of the Fourth Republic’s only armored trains steamed across France, away from Paris. The Aurora was by no means the most modern of armored trains, but it served its purpose well. Equipped with an array of machine guns, a printing press, a telegraph station, and of course the flag of the Fourth Republic the Aurora was outfitted to rally men to the fight where ever it traveled.

Over the course of the later months of 1916, Charles Faucheux and the Aurora choo choo across the the 4th Republic in an effort to win the people over and solidify Charles as a public figure head, a voice of the revolution. The poor and wounded are helped wherever they may be found and Charles delivers rousing speeches. Propaganda spews from the train, urging the people to fight to cement the revolution.

The Empire of Japan

Naval_Ensign_of_Japan.svg

Shall Ashura

subdue a man like me ?

I shall be born again

and then I’ll cut the head

off Katsuie...

Private first class Satow Kenzo stood solemnly inside of the metal dingy that the sergeant called a ‘landing craft’, to him it seemed more like a death trap and a cooker. Little room to move due to the amount of people inside, the (relatively) little projection it provided and the sound of that GOD DAMN ANNOYING ENGINE !!!!!!!

But in any case for either good or bad this long wait would not last much longer. The Sergeant had said that it would only be one more minute until landfall. Where they were to meet fierce Chinese resistance. Though Satow did not worry about that, it were merely Chinese after all. Any halfway decent Japanese could take out 10 of them with ease. That is what his parents had told him from birth, his father a former soldier in the Imperial army who fought in the first sino-japanese war and in the samurai rebellion.

Then Satow felt the landing craft shake and saw the hatch which was several men removed from him suddenly drop down to the ground. This was accompanied by the General screaming to move out. Satow felt that the sergeant was over reacting, they were to be the first wave, the Chinese would have long been defeated at this point in time. But he still did as commanded, seeing as honoring your commander is paramount to survival.

Then as Satow rushed out of the landing craft he was greeted by the sigh of mayhem. Lines of fellow marines rushing forward towards the dunes in waves as the doctrine had taught them and to quickly overwhelm the enemy. But Satow also saw dozens upon dozens of corpses upon the ground. Some even rotting due to the combination of the water and salt affecting the body as well as the heat this time of year. Satow felt the need to barf but he could not do so, feeling the training stopping him from delaying his time and energy like that. So he pushed forward

In front of him were several small dunes. Even now fellow marines were shouting battlecry and charging up the hills. Or providing covering fire for their comrades, whilst taking cover behind the dead boddies of their comrades. Satow noticed that the Chinse had emplace several pieces of machine guns on top of the low dunes and only just now noticed several wide spread out holes indicating artillery fire. Seeing this Satow rushed forward, not wishing to share the same fate as the others who had made this beach their final resting place. As such he rushed forward, running faster than ever before even with his heavy uniform and weaponry. Even with even his fellow squad mates getting torn up by machine gun and artillery fire beside, in front and behind of him.

Eventually Satow made his way towards the low dunes where the Japanese and Chinese had proceeded to maul each other in melee combat. It was absolute chaos. All Satow could do was attach a bayonet to his rifle and charge forward screaming. In front of him he saw a Chinese soldier who had a rifle. He stood next to a now silenced machine gun and to what seemed to be his loader. Seeing a clear target Satow charged forward. The Chinese man then seemed to noticed him and grabbed his rifle steady which already had a bayonet attached to it.

As he charged towards the man Satow for just a second saw his life and saw several memories flash before him flash before him. Memories playing samurai with his brother and the sad looks his Grandfather had sent him. The look of a veteran seeing another generation of warriors be trained. A new generation to either live or die in the fires of war.

Almost as soon as the flash begun it ended. Now Satow was charging once more, he twisted his body to the right as the Chinese soldier thrust a bayonet in his direction. HIs side still got grazed and a thin cut but that was all. Nothing threatening as long as it did not get infected. The chinese was not so lucky. Sawo with his training and childhood of play fighting had a steady aim with his bayonet which hit his enemy right in his center of mass. With what was almost like panic Sawo just kept stabbing even after the Chinese man had stopped breathing. After he did this for a minute he looked around. THe rest of the marines seemed to have gotten past the ridge and were making their way to the harbor to secure it.

Satow’s hands were shaking heavily, with Satow looking at almost something like disgust at his hands. This was not what battle was supposed to be like, battle was supposed to be honorable dueling, easily defeating the enemy and showing the savages the superiority of the empire. But this, this was just wrong. And as he looked at the corpse of the man he killed and one of his fellow comrades Satow wondered for a moment what was really the difference. One man was of a different nation than the other but they were both Asian. ANd now Asians were slaughtering Asians, slaughtering their kin.

Satow then looked upon the man once more and in a morose and still shell-shocked state of mind supposed that looting the body would not be any problem. The Chinese man would not have a use for it anymore.

As Satow searched through the man’s pockets he did not find much of value, just some little knick knacks here and there, just human things until he came upon what seemed like a picture. He took it with his hands and saw as the blood of the man he just killed partially stained it.

Then he weeped, just sad tears leaving his eyes and Satow shook and cried in agony and regret and the picture fell from his hand.

The picture was of the Chinese man, smilling happily in the foto together with his wife and little daughter, all of them happy. With what seemed to be a bright future ahead of them all.

A future now cut short.

Actions

Early 1916:

- An investment is put into the Research and development department of the Japanese Government. Hoping to improve the rate of technological research that the Imperial state has. [MOD]

- Much of the war taxes and military budget it lowered, making the civilian economy able to prosper once more. Though the taxes and goverment budget remain larger than before the war started. [No mod action]

-In order to connect the empire properly a project is done to improve transport in the empire.

Firstly a new railway is built being based off already existing ones in Manchuria and Korea. This railway will connect the major cities of Korea with each other, it will go through Manchuria and then through the major cities of the newly occupied Beiyang territory. Allowing for faster movement of people, including troops ?

Secondly the port city of Tianjing is rebuilt. Allowing shipping from the Japanese mainland to arrive more easily and spread throughout occupied China. [MOD]

-New schools are built in occupied China. Focusing around the cities and major settlements. Here schools will be set up which of course give a good standard of education but also focuses on partially indoctrinating Chinese children. Letting them believe in the quickly spreading ‘Way forward’ and in a pan-asian state with Japan at the lead. [MOD]

Late 1916:

-If not finished then the transport projects continue

-More schools are built in China to help teach a new generation of children to be loyal to the empire.

-If funds are left remaining then progress will begin in revitalizing the Chinese economy. This is done partially by subsiding and supporting new local factories to be build. On top of that other subsidies and tax cuts are made to ease the expansion and setting up of new companies. This should help in creating a greater wealth in China and together with the railroad network increase local prosperity. [MOD]

-The new ideology of Issho Ni Tsuyoko is encouraged to be spread througout the country. Hopefully resulting in it becoming popular and making the eventual goals of the empire easire to achieve https://docs.google.com/document/d/1J89zDi6Zy3qlUvTGWKgPr8Afe8Iq40IQiMQXW1dNDgo/edit?usp=sharing

EMPIRE OF BRAZIL

AN END TO THE CIVIL WAR!

Rebel groups today opted to accept the offered terms of the Imperial Government, apparently content to cease fighting in return for a series of reforms and guarantees.

His Imperial Majesty, Dom Pedro III, gave a major selection of reforms, pledging to allow a constitutional monarchy, allow a force of National Guard militias and to enact major reforms to benefit the lives of the working class in Brazil.

Euphoria across the nation was the response, with many near years of joy that the prospect of Brazilian slaying Brazilian was now passed.

The relief of the Brazilian people was further marked by the huge burst to continue industrialisation, with major deals offered to foreign investment, and Brazilian companies receiving huge subsidies to advance the national interest of a new, united Brazil.

But all was not united in the Empire of Brazil - with The Emperor officially calling an election, and then going on his South American tour as to not be accused of influencing said election - political parties already at each others’ throats.

Interestingly, Emperor Dom Pedro III had allowed universal suffrage, and political activists were now forced to canvass both men and women in an attempt to gain their support.

On one side sat the Conservative Party, true monarchists, imperialists and capitalists - the nation's noble, commercial and military elite.

On the other sat the Workers’ Party, not true socialists, but a conglomerate of radical Trade Unionists and Republicans, the Champions of the people.

Finally there was the Liberal Party, made up of moderates, constitutional monarchists and other such groups, providing a mixed series of in-between policies independent of both the Conservatives and the Workers’ Party.

THE SOUTH AMERICAN TOUR

Dom Pedro III, in the interests of allowing a perfectly clean election, had opted to spend the campaign touring the length and breadth of Latin America, in an attempt to foster better relations between Brazil and her neighbours. Traveling by rail, sea and road, the Emperor began his tour in Argentina, and ended his tour in Venezuela, where he famously met with the military strongman and de facto ruler of Venezuela, Juan Vicente Gómez.

Throughout the entirety of his tour, the Emperor had met with workers, with orphans, with generals, with privates, with capitalists, socialists and politicians. He had left no stone unturned, using the tour to meet with representatives of every caste and class of society. It was in Venezuela, to an assembly of the Venezuelan Congress, that Pedro III made the final speech of his tour, played over the radios of many South Americans, and published in many papers.

“Latin Americans! By the grace of almighty God above, we are siblings, comrades and countrymen! Irrespective of past rivalries, regardless of bitterness and of past conflicts.

For a century, our nations have been divided, almost to the extent of schism, when we have had need to stand together - to stand tall as proud Latin Americans - and that is the way forwards for us now.

Our fair continent cannot be confused with North America, nor with Europe - why should we live in fear of an overbearing set of Empires scattered across the globe, when we can rather stand together as brothers, supporting each other through thick and through thin.

It is not as adversaries that we must stand, but as friends and as brethren, as trading partners and as allies  we must stand against foreign incursions and foreign interventions in Latin America. We must stand together against US attempts to make protectorates of us. We must stand against German attempts to make colonies of us! We must stand against British, French and Dutch colonialism continuing ever onwards, abusing Latin Americans for their own personal gain!

United, we are lands filled with promise and with potential, with the prospect of ever greater wealth and prosperity coming ever closer.

Divided,  we are a series of poorly industrialised and militarised states,  weak in the eyes of other world powers, bitter and jealous of what little we have - and vulnerable to any tyrant who desires to exploit our division!

There is only one path for Latin America, and that path is together! Together as partners, as allies and as kin! Together as Latin Americans of various nationalities, but as Latin Americans all the same!”

-------

-Industrialisation continues, and even more money is invested in growing Brazilian industry and introducing new industries to Brazil. [MOD]

-Brazilian efforts to clear the rainforest and establish mines, farms and ranches and to survey for resources continue. [MOD]

-10 National Guard Brigades are established and armed. These part time militia units are formed in geographical regions, and are essentially mounted infantry to be raised in the event of an invasion of Brazil. 2’500 men are in each Brigade, and their uniform is merely an armband and a plumed hat. [MOD]

-A constitution is drafted and several rights are enshrined. Freedom of speech, freedom to strike, and universal suffrage are but a few. [MOD]

-A minimum wage, basic safety standards and a requirement for every factory to have a union are enacted. [MOD]

-Housing regulations are enacted, including laws regarding cleanly outhouses in tenant apartments and safety standards for construction of these tenements. [MOD]

-Tax cuts and subsidies continue to entice more industrialists to Brazil. [MOD]

-6 new cruisers are laid down to be constructed. [MOD]

-More schools are built, and scholarships are paid for out of the Emperor's personal fortune in order to improve the minds the Empire has at her disposal. [MOD]

-The Army Aviation Wing is established and Brazil begins to train Aviators. [MOD]

-The Brazilian Navy is repaired. [MOD]

The Global Times

SUMMER AUSTRIAN OFFENSIVE ANNOUNCED

VIENNA, July 20th 1916 - Breaking News from our war correspondents in the East as reports of a massive Austrian advance emerge.  A press release by the Austrian Central Command boasts of the participation of millions of soldiers across a nearly 700km front.

In this photo obtained by the Global Times, the Emperor himself is shown inspecting Guard regiments hours before the offensive.

The most potent zone of this conflict is in the Galician city of Lviv, where Austrian commanders opted for a “ordinance over men” style of fighting.  In the Siege of Lviv, many of our analysts point out the great successes the Austrian army had in forcing the Russian forces back while minimizing casualties.  But the costs are great for this form of assault. Much of the city and its countryside lay in ruins. A once thriving industrial hub now lays decimated by Austrian guns, and its once proud population dispersed into refugee groups.

Aerial footage, taken with the latest form of airborne camera-photography depicts the destruction suffered in the Lviv city center.

The offensive comes at a time of strenuous discussions of peace in Geneva.  Will this new offensive break the fragile peace process? Or is it a careful tactic by the central powers to apply pressure on the Entente to secure more favorable terms? Stay tuned until the next edition.

THE EMPIRE OF AUSTRIA-HUNGARY

The Death of a Monarch

Emperor Franz Joseph was in critical status, his health had rapidly deteriorated ever since he was caught outside by his attendants taking a walk during the last cold months of the year past. He was unable to observe the state of his Empire while bumbling fools tore it apart in front of him, being bedridden.

He had come to terms with his heir though - His nephew, Franz Ferdinand had come to his side during his last moments, to which the Emperor had officially entrusted the Empire to Ferdinand.

And so, in the year of our Lord, 1916, Emperor Franz Joseph of the Hapsburg House had breathe his last breath. The central territories of the Empire fall into a state of mourning as the funeral procession proceeds, but due to the war, the majority of the citizenry are not permitted to halt productions, and shortly after, all states are returned to their normal status.

Furious Reforms

With the Greater Austrian Empire now under his control as Emperor, Franz Ferdinand was deeply disgusted by the state of it all – From the Rape of Bulgaria, to ineffective Austrian Military, to the massive ethnic tensions that plagued his lands, he sought to lay down the foundations of repairing such an Empire. He slowly begun to replace the old Imperial Cabinets with his own, knowing that his future plans will no doubt cause massive issues with the already established ruling Nobility. He was even more so concerned about the backlash he may acquire from the Magyars in Hungary, he had to tread upon a tight line to ensure his reforms are to pass into reality.

Regardless of such concerns, his control over his portion of the Austrian Military was strong. Like most Habsburg males, Ferdinand enlisted into Army early on in his life, to which he would make connections and would have his influence be spread. Upon his ascension to Emperor of All of Greater Austria, his control over the Military bolstered - his first concerns were the criminalizing of those involved in the Rape of Bulgaria, from the highest Officer to the lowest, those who had a major part in sacking Bulgaria were called to Court. A move that would boost his popularity while replacing inept Commanders within the Army. His own Imperial Regiments being sent forth to bring these people to Vienna, as the remainder would remain stationed around the Emperor and his key assets.

Upon matters of personal military matters; Franz Ferdinand quietly expands the Imperial Guard, incorporating more of the Empire’s Nobility into it. Handpicked for their loyalty and competency, they are soon expected to be put to use as the usually ceremonial Guard Regiments are put into active training.

Following the expansion of his Imperial Guard, the Emperor sought to build a Party centered about himself within the House of Lords Parliament in Vienna. Utilizing the fact that the children of some of the Lordly Politicians have now been enlisted into his Regimental Guards, he begins to build his political influence by operating together with these people. Now his concerns then laid upon the matters of his Legislation within the Parliaments, though here he wouldn't be heavy-handed. He couldn't afford an Hungarian outrage at this time if he attempted to fix upon any of the situations currently plaguing the Government.

The Hungarians elite, being naturally complacent, did not want to alter the status quo, for they were kept content with ruling over their already established zones dictated in the 1867 Compromise, even if it meant it was tearing the Empire apart - they will be dealt with, eventually.

The Emperor can although hire translators to work within the Parliaments, ensuring that the various ethnicity of the Empire are heard and comprehended, but not yet acted upon, a minor action that would hopefully appease the politicians for a time.

Seeing that further actions may cause increased instability within his Empire, Franz Ferdinand awaits for the Summer Offensive to be completed before acting upon anything else. Leaving his hope into the hands of those he chose to strike back at the Russians.

IMPERIAL STATE OF AFFAIRS

The Austrian Economy continued to operate at regular wartime readiness - though Galicia was lost, it was not of major importance like the Hungarian valley, or Bohemian flatlands. Trade continued between the Central Powers, forming a strong link of land commerce all the way from Berlin, Vienna, Rome, Belgrade and Istanbul.

In return for the land transfer to the Kingdom of Serbia, the Serbians pledge their logistical support to the Austrian Offensive into Galicia, hopefully able to alleviate the issues of re-mobilizing over five million troops.

IMPERIAL ACTIONS

  • The Western Expeditionary Armies are recalled from France. Using German infrastructure, they make a quick withdrawal back to the Eastern Front against the Russians and Her allies. The majority of the one million strong force is expected to re-mobilized within the year’s end, they are expected to reinforce the Austrian Push into their lost territory. [Troop Re-mobilization from West to East]

  • As the Imperial Battle-Groups are ordered forward, the Austrian Command meets its first obstacle, Lamberg. The operation begins to recapture the City lost previously at the start of the War. The battle-lines are drawn out throughout the surrounding region. Once the Austrian armies reach their line, they are under orders specifically from the Emperor to be arranged into battalions that are consistent with their ethnicities, with as many translators sent to them as possible in order to alleviate any communications issues or language barriers. [Battle Plans]

  • The ‘Sale’ of Bosnia and Dalmatia amongst other regions to the Serbian Kingdom is concluded without issues. The Slavic people in the region reunited with their homeland. The K.K Gendarmerie from Austria-Proper is positioned about in key ethnically Slavic enclaves throughout to prevent any sort of hostile behaviorism before it comes to fruition. [Trade Deal with Serbia]

  • Communication issues are brought up to the Emperor. Seeing as the Empire speaks a multitude of languages, finding a common balance is difficult to achieve. The Emperor although does promise to make it so that all languages within his lands with a large population are equal in a Public Statement Report, and plans to pass through several laws in Parliament after the War’s end. [Promises of Language Equality]

  • The majority of the Imperial Income is funded into the Military in order to keep it in fighting shape, any sort of public projects will have to wait till the war’s end. [Mass Funding of Imperial Military]

Russia 1916

January - June

The February Revolution

Vladimir Purishkevich would stand in front of the Grand Assembly building in Moscow, not only speaking to the members of the body but also the citizens of Russia. He calls upon them to watch as their home is threatened on all sides, and not to run in fear but instead to stand up and fight! Any man who believes he could aid the cause should enlist just to protect their freedom, for now, Stalin marched on them from the east, threatening to take their wealth, land, and freedom. He denounces communism again and condemns the entirety of the Soviet Union government as traitors for their breaking of the ceasefire and treaty.

The Non-Combatants

The Duma would order the establishment of a medical and engineer corps who would specialize in specific military roles. The names of each role are self-explanatory in what they would do, and while each corp would have basic training and some additional training, most would not be on the front-lines and rather operate as support for the men on the front-lines or in occupied regions. Positions were opened to educated women, largely from the cities.

The Defense of Capitalism

President Purishkevich, Prime Minister Ilyin, and a number of important politicians and business would give speeches to the Russian public in Moscow, hoping to rally support for not only the Duma but also capitalism. They promoted capitalist ideas and called for people to become entrepreneurs, and for existing businessmen to put everything on the line to defend their country from the foreign threats, especially communism which now threatened their very livelihoods and all they have worked for. Using this, the Duma would also push again for the production of fighter planes and proper synchronization technology.

The Iron Beasts

The Duma would commission the construction of three new heavy armored trains and two new light armored trains. For the light armored trains, a focus would be put on long-range attacks, with the hope that engineers can design something comparable to the railway guns.

Inhumanity

Gas masks were produced en masse for the military, and although the Russians were unwilling to be the first to use poison gas, they expected the Central Powers armies would not feel the same way. Thus they would begin to stockpile some gas when possible but would keep it located in cities where it could only be used if absolutely necessary.

Food Rationing

The Grand Assembly would vote on food rationing, and President Purishkevich would argue it was necessary to ensure the nation did not starve during the time of war. During the war and rationing, no food would be allowed to be exported out of the country. The Duma promises Russian farmers rewards upon the end of the war which will make up for rationing tenfold.

July-December

A Call for Peace

The Duma would announce its support for the British propose Geneva Conference and again emphasized their belief that this war was futile and must end justly. “No more lives should be lost on this quest for what anymore? Justice? World socialism? Domination? Does either alliance agree on why they are fighting the war together or has it just come down to pride and ruthless bloodshed?” - Vladimir Purishkevich

The Communist Threat

While infuriated by the actions of the German government, the President instead directs that east, calling Josef Stalin dishonorable and a traitor to Russia, as well as the rest of the Council which ran the Soviets. He shows the treaty they presented to the Russians as yet another sign no nation should trust the Soviet Union. Propaganda throughout Russia displays the Red Menace as what it is, calling for its immediate end.

Water Tanks

The Duma would order research into the mobile “water” tanks the British were developing. They hoped to also create their own designs in order to protect “water” as it was brought to the front lines of the war. They would be designed with armor and armaments to defend the “water” from enemy threats and with permission from the British government, would be based somewhat off her own designs.

The Socialist Compromise

President Purishkevich and the entirety of the Russian Duma would make a formal apology for their past misclassifications of political ideologies as radical revolutionaries and the oppression of the socialist parties of Russia, Poland, Ukraine, and Finland, as well as to Leon Trotsky himself. With this announcement, socialist parties would no longer be banned throughout the Union and would be invited into the next round of public elections. The Grand Assembly even offers pardons for socialists who had rebelled during the Civil War and invites them back into the country to return home unmolested. The Duma would make clear though, Josef Stalin and Vladimir Lenin, and the radical revolutionary governments of the Soviet Union, who were considered violent, radical revolutionaries, would still be considered traitors and the war to end their Marxist regime would continue. The socialists in Caucausia would also not be recognized, as the independence of the region itself was not being seen as legitimate by the Russian government.

Education Initiatives

The Education Initiative in Russia would continue, hoping to expand the school system to the rural areas surrounding the cities which have seen education rise significantly over the last years. Teachers would be sought for and offered relatively high salaries in order to promote the field, though a requirement was made for teachers to have a verifiable education at a university.

ACTIONS

Early 1916

The Duma would call for more volunteers but would conscript nobody else following the end of World War I.

Medical and engineer corps are created for the military and would allow women to enlist in non-combat roles.

The Duma called for production of armored trains and guns to be increased, and Purishkevich alongside other invited leaders of industry gave speeches claiming how if Stalin and Trotsky reach Moscow Capitalism in Russia will end. They would also call for research of fighter planes and synchronization tech in order to better protect Russian airspace.

Russia orders three more heavy trains and two light armored trains.

Gas masks are put into production.

Food rationing begins to ensure that Russia’s supply lasts the war.

Late 1916

The Russian Union would echo Britain’s for a conference to discuss peace for all participants of the war.

The threat of Communism is emphasized after this, reiterating the death of capitalism and freedom that will come at Stalin’s hands.

Russia begins research into takes and with permission from the other members of the Entente, would work off of their designs.

[See the Socialist Compromise]

Education initiatives would begin to be extended into the rural regions surrounding the cities as well as larger towns, and the Duma hopes to encourage educated people from the schools to begin teaching elsewhere. Salaries for teaching positions are intentionally boosted to promote the field in its infancy, and the Duma immediately begins to work on workers protections for teachers.
