1914 (Early Months)

And so, the world shakes to it’s core. Globalization was akin to modern times. Life was getting better, bigger, and fuller. But but but. It seems the world has brought itself to the brink. Tensions are razor sharp, and all it takes is one little push............

Nationalism is at an almost all time high! Across the world these parties are starting to grow the quickest. Men who believed in the honor of their state, and it’s rightful means to expand.

The St. Petersburg–Tampa Airboat Line in the United States starts services between St. Petersburg and Tampa, Florida, becoming the first airline to provide scheduled regular commercial passenger services

Suffragette Mary Richardson damages Velázquez' painting Rokeby Venus in London's National Gallery, with a meat chopper.

The Brazilian Football Confederation is founded, with Álvaro Zamith as its first president. The Brazilian Olympic Committee is founded on the same day.

Greek genocide: Ottoman Greeks in Phocaea are massacred by Turkish irregular troops.

China debuts as the first Nation to officially have it’s “excrement” hit the fan. Up until an unofficial Japanese blockade in July (Soon to be a very tense month for all) aid has been sent. The Beiyang warlord pact was ruthless in it’s crackdowns. All in the name of President Yuan, still in a secluded hospital recovering from his wounds.

Kill teams roamed the countryside, hunting down alleged enemies to the Republic. The Provincial system is kept. But many representatives are accused (and duly executed) of being enemies of the state. Everyone was terrified, an enraged President Yuan bullying his Republic. It was astounding for how long people meekly let this all happen, still hoping for a Republic.

Chinese troops in pickelhaubes marched through Beiyang, toting maxims and rifles. They marched in lock step, and were the Beiyang Pacts elite troops. Massive ‘Republic’ armies began mobilization on the Manchurian border, after a years worth of preparation.

And then China explodes because of one nurse!

Having escaped from the hospital Yuan was at in the Tibetan mountains, she flees to her uncle. A local warlord, and provincial representative opposed to the Republic. In bits she recounted the past few months. It soon became apparent to the world President Yuan had never ordered these crackdowns. He had died only minutes after the Assassin shot him, his body stored somewhere remote. The Beiyang had been consolidating their power in his name, while the Germans focused on seizing Chinese naval assets.

And now they stood strong, focused around their capital of Beijing. The Provincial Republic died as hundreds began to bicker and enforce their power in their local areas. With no President or power holding them together, they fractured. Warlords and politicians began carving out their own little slices of Empire. Thanks to the crackdowns, German aid, and consolidation though, the Beiyang pact had a formidable sphere of influence around Beijing. An unknown number of seized Republic ships and German ones pre blockade remain safe in docks.

Regardless China explodes into several states, most of them at war with each other. China’s efforts to train it’s populace many years ago now came back to haunt them.

Serbia

Car factories begin in Serbia, soon to be converted to military factories!

The SIA becomes more competent as it plays cat and mouse with Russian officials, hunting them down.

Army reforms continue, Serbia is now ironically the world’s most experienced and modern army.

Montenegrins pour into Serbia, giving their economy a temporary boost. In a few years time they will return home with their skills. Ties between both nations grow.

Spain

Nationalism and patriotic fervor rise, as more people begin to value the monarchy.

Mining and Foundry Plans continued as planned.

Grain Silos however will take longer, they start in the major towns.

With a little counseling and family time the royal couple begins to mend.

Russia

Chaos rips through the country! In a [semi] successful coup as people regard it, the Russian Duma and it’s key members storm the palace. However they did not get to walk right in. Though the Tsar was unpopular, there was no massive mistakes made in  rapid succession or overtly stupid move recently to motivate this response. And so many still supported the rightful Romanov’s centuries long rule, not the 3 year old Duma. However many nationalist, radicals, and ironically worker unions supported them.

The palace escapade becomes bloody immediately. Guards loyal to the Tsar ambush Duma force’s as they approach the palace. After an hour of fighting however, they lose. But in all the confusion the Royal Family had escaped, with a palace guard contingent. Rasputin is found hiding under a bed in the Royal families nursery, and is apprehended. Other dissidents either flee or are mostly rounded up in the capital.

Crackdowns begin as the laws are passed through the Duma. Many had caught wind of it, but were still too slow. Riots erupt in Moscow, St Petersburg, and elsewhere at the banning of these parties. The Duma being stormed added fuel to the fire. Now people saw this as a hostile takeover, not a rightful step to power. Fleeing Socialist run through the country, playing cat and mouse with Duma hunters. The Labour Group ceases to exist as many join other parties or flee.

Work on the rifle does not happen with all this political upheaval.

Support for the Duma is hotly contested. Their promises of nationalism, a progressive Russia, the Societal Front, and constitution seem promising. As a result Duma control in the main Russian cities is the strongest. They control most of the industry and cities. However if they thought this would be a bloodless takeover, they were very far from being right.

The outlawed parties, royalist, and opponents of the Duma were large. While the Duma controlled cities, more backwards areas and rural lands stuck to the Tsar. After a month or two Tsar Nicholas makes his presence known. He had fled to Finland, and was raising an army. He calls for every ‘True’ Russian to resist the Duma. After this the countryside becomes teeming with rebels. Cossacks, loyal Regiments, Royalist, they all took up arms. There was no fronts, merely raids and skirmishes popping up across the entire Empire. Exactly four other Russian provisional governments are set up alongside the Duma. Mostly in the center and east, they are the exiled Socialist/Democrat enclaves. They were whipping up the locals, establishing their own states.

The Russian army enters immobility as the chaos ensues. They were torn on whether to support the Tsar or Duma. Many began to argue, debate, and fight (with fist). Others were already packing their bags, heading to either the Tsar in Finland or the Duma to enlist (Or the Socialist enclaves to the east). The Official Russian army begins to slowly disintegrate. However with the Military Front and several Duma leaning generals, they had command over large portions of available military garrisons in the cities, and all the industry (in the west). Over 1 million men under arms, recent recruitments aside.

Support for the Duma is mixed. However with strong nationalist fervor and reforms, they have avoided what could have possibly been their immediate deaths. Now who knew which faction would take the Russian throne. The Tsar controlled the ports, navy, and army groups of western Russia.

Netherlands

The propaganda has some effect, but the government was paining a very rosy picture. Dutch society is split, and the current government help a minority of the power in parliament. As a result their actions were sluggish, as it met much opposition. As such the army only sees a slight increase to recruits. The Conscript army wasn’t really a thing unless in emergency. As a result there was no true steps to a modern army that way.

As said, they were struggling for  money. As a result most blatantly ignored the equality acts. They made profit where they could, and moved on. The same for infrastructure, many being brutally used up and discarded. However as a result the VOK more or less begins to consolidate power.

The same for their new african colonies. On paper it sounded good, but in execution it was sloppy and imprecise. The population still seethes, mainly out of Dutch public eye. The Dutch see this lessening as good, assuming it’s working.

These ideas for armies like that simply didn’t exist in a large enough way to grasp. Modern armies like the British even would struggle to claim all those claims. Alongside this the government opposition shows in the first major confrontation. Besides colony troops and some royal elements, a Dutch army really didn’t exist. In war time or emergency the conscripts are called into service. However that has yet to happen. Alongside this the opposition is against taking to a standing army. They still firmly believe in armed neutrality, and a conscript army in emergency was the way to achieve that. Arming with new equipment begins slowly. However the foreign officers do begin whipping up a ‘modern’ division of Dutch.

Greece

The Steel Industry falls behind on expected quotas. Instead it was busy being converted into weapons of war for Greece.

Expulsion of Centrist leaning officers starts. However this is met with firm opposition from the King’s son, and royalist. Instead they opt to leave the army (doing the Greek’s job for them!) and found their own paramilitary clubs.

Japan

Mobilization begins, ringing alarms in Asia. However it was already pretty clear matters were soon to grow worse. Army mobilization will be complete by June.

Infrastructure had been receiving small in headway in upgrades. With The increased attention it will speed up. Railways and other commodities might be finished by 1916.

Research begins in better amphibious craft. For now they can only slightly improve current models.

Destroyers begin construction, slightly outdated in comparison Germany/Britain’s ever growing fleets. They are expected to finish on standard construction time.

326307.jpg?1459985211

France

Greece appreciates the help, tying the government closer. But not the Royalty!

The new guns are implemented into the divisions slowly, as factories make the shift over. For now training is only rudimentary, no one really knowing just how effective machine guns will be.

The navy designs will be slightly off time. They are planned to be finished by 20 months.

All three nation’s reject the offer. Romania pronounces it is not eager to make Austria an enemy, while France was so far away.

Great Britain

The highest tax recorded! And yet it was passed through a unified government rather smoothly. Great Britain leading up to June, 1914 steps up to the plate, and matches German production for the year.

The Spanish troops are woefully unready to be trained with such fine weapons. It will take plenty of time for them to adopt to uniform rifles and machine guns.

Films spread throughout the U.S. However many see them as peculiar, or a amusement, not serious. Most are too busy with internal politics to look across the ocean.

Italy

Though the calls for support of the Duma are realized by the government, few take action. Firstly the Tsar holds the routes into Russia. Secondly the Duma seemed to be a potential Italian enemy, what with growing tensions on between the two global alliances.

German and Austrian arms flood in as the army mobilizes and arms as planned. However almost every Italian is still using homeland weaponry.

The Dreadnought plan is better left to nations like Germany or Britain. Instead the Italians lay down plans for 2 dreadnoughts and an armored cruiser.

Elections are in! And it’s a mixed bag. The socialist gained no power. However now the Liberal and Nationalist ideals are blending, becoming a proto Imperial policy. Italy’s government was leaning towards a stronger monarchy, and everyday Italian rights.

“A shot heard around the world!” A tacky line stolen from the Americans, German newspapers nevertheless use it. In the past year or so there had been many radical changes. Socialist in Germany were on the rise in government. They were allied with many Democrats and Liberals. The Reichstag was becoming an actual tool of government. Generals were pushing for a war, to take control of the country.

Amidst all this was the shot that was very loud. King Ludwig of Bavaria had always kept a keen eye on the west. He never trusted the French, and always suspected them. As a result he was not entirely popular with them either. It was this year he was busy touring Alsace-Lorraine. OHL (German High Command) wanted him there to inspect the western army groups. French rhetoric had increasingly been about regaining their lost land. That paired with being allied with Russia, and competing with German industry made them a threat.

Unfortunately King Ludwig III was also a perceived threat to the French. Though no one knows truly, it was indeed a socialist French group that took actions into their own hands. Working in tandem with German and Russian cells, they plotted the King’s assassination. They had no attachment to French government which Germany finds out, but chooses to ignore. While Ludwig was visiting a famous battlefield of the Franco-Prussian war, a shot rings out. They were in an open field, dominated by the famous mountains of the region. A sniper had concealed himself in the mountain, waiting days for the King to arrive. And the shot was perfect, through the heart.

However the assassin and his company are caught, after an off duty soldier reported several armed Frenchmen boarding at the inn. They are rounded up, and brutally interrogated. Germany learns they were socialist, and had connections in Paris, Berlin, and Moscow. OHL, eager to press the issue, whisper in the Kaiser’s ears. He is convinced it was an affront to the Empire, and a blatant threat. The King was dead, and Frenchmen were the reason.

WWI-enfield-sniper.jpg

OHl reasoned Britain would not get involved in a war with German navy might growing, and they would call on Austria’s help. They saw war with Russia as inevitable, and opted to move before the Russian’s could rival them. It would also solidify German command and the Kaiser's control in an increasingly democratic Reichstag.

French government officials and socialist party leaders are accused of supporting the assassination of King. Germany claims they should of kept a closer watch, and even potentially were the ones who armed them. It was indeed the French government who wanted Alsace-Lorraine returned to its ‘owner’ after all.

And so France is met with a list of demands/ At 6:00 in the evening on July 23, they state;

-France offers an apology to Bavaria, and the Empire as a whole.

-France pays 1 million British pounds for reparations.

-France allows German troops to cross the border and apprehend/search for more of the Socialist/Radicals.

-Agreement to end the arms race

-Leasing of french dockyards for German navy

-To suppress every publication which shall incite to hatred and contempt of the  German Monarchy, and the general tendency of which shall be directed against the territorial integrity of the latter;

-To eliminate without delay from public instruction in Serbia, everything, whether connected with the teaching corps or with the methods of teaching, that serves or may serve to nourish the propaganda against Austria-Hungary;

-To remove from the military and administrative service in general all officers and officials who have been guilty of carrying on the propaganda against Germany, whose names the Imperial and Royal Government reserves the right to make known to the Royal Government when communicating the material evidence now in its possession;

It should be noted this was not clear cut actions. It was a sloppy mess of confusion, telegraphs, and misinterpreted intentions. Europe was gradually sliding into war over the chaos German OHL was causing from the assassination. It only got worse from there, with all the demands, alliances, and hatreds. Germany and Austria begin partial mobilization, purely to have a “Defensive Army” should war come. Military men across the continent urge mobilization as well, fearing if they don’t to be caught off guard.

Late 1914

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

US Congress, Washington DC, August 23rd, 1914

President Theodore Roosevelt stood before congress. The noise started to settle down as the matter at hand was starting. There were very important matters to be discussed today. On one side of the room stood Taft, representing the Republicans, on the other side stood Wilson, representing the Democrats. Roosevelt, Johnson and the rest of the Progressive party had decided to take a neutral stance on the matter, seeing how this was something for the President to decide. “The issue on the table:” Roosevelt announced. “The Entente is beyond the verge of war with the Central Powers. Now do we provide aid and volunteers to our French  friends, or do we stay out of it? Remember, my decision on this matter is not subject to congressional approval. The only person you have to convince... Is me. Senator Wilson, you have the floor sir.”

Wilson started right away. “I call you all back to the birth of our nation. When we were on death’s door, when we were needy… We made a promise, we signed a treaty. We needed money and guns and half a chance, who provided those funds?” “France...” murmered Thomas Marshall who sat behind Wilson, loud enough for people to hear, causing various Democrats to make remarks of agreement. Wilson continued “In return they didn’t ask for land, only a promise that we’d lend a hand and stand with them if they fought against oppressors.. And we’re quite late, but now is the time to stand! I know that Senator Taft here would rather not have this debate, but I’ll remind you: he is NOT secretary of State! He knows nothing of loyalty!” “Nothing!” Yelled some democratic senator in the back, causing Roosevelt to glance in his direction with a glare. Wilson continued with his insults “Smells like new money, dresses like fake royalty.. Desperate to rise to his former station, everything he does betrays the ideals of our nation!” A loud “Ooh!” sounded from the democrats, as well as a few progressives who didn’t like Taft. “Hey and if you don’t know, now you know, Mr. President...” said Wilson with a grin.

Roosevelt rolled with his eyes and nodded. “Thank you, Senator Wilson… Senator Taft, your response...”

There was a moment of silence on Taft’s side. “C’mon...” “Get him..” were some of the incentives heard amongst the Republicans. Suddenly Taft slammed his fist onto the desk. “You must be out of your GODDAMN mind if you think, the President is going to bring the nation to the brink, of meddling in the middle of a military mess, a game of chess, where France is Queen and Kingless! We signed that treaty more than ages ago! Time to let the French go ‘head and face their own foe! Now, Mister Francophile, do you call those insults a thread? You’re gonna have to get real and fill my head with lead if you want to see me filled with dread!” Taft yelled at Wilson, his response wasn’t stylish to say the least, but it got the point across.

Roosevelt intervened “Enough, Senator Taft is right!” “Mister President-” Wilson started before Roosevelt motioned for him to remain silent “This war is not our fight!” “But sir, do we not fight for freedom?” Wilson complained. “Sure, when the French figure out how to lead ‘em...” “Their generals are leading!” “Their generals are making a mess, there’s a difference! Frankly it’s a little disquieting you would let your ideals blind you to reality. Johnson.” “Ready sir.” said the vice president. “Draft a statement of neutrality.”

Fort Lafayette, New York City, New York, September 7th, 1914

Fort Lafayette was demoted to solely being an ammunition storage in 1897, on this day, that decision was reversed though. All over the United States, mobilization began to slowly be planned out. Fort Lafayette for example became a training camp and recruitment center for New Yorkers who would later be transported to other forts and camps all over the Union. Military spending was gradually increased as the war in Europe got more fowl by the day, and the United States started arming itself just in case war came knocking on Heaven’s door.

Wall Street Stock Exchange, New York City, New York, October 15th, 1914

There went Benjamin Franklin, multiple hundreds of times to be exact. 100 dollar bills were becoming more common than ever at the Stock Market in NYC. Capitalism was at it’s finest here as usual, but on the other side, the Stock Exchange was trading blood money nowadays. More and more companies in the USA were starting to make a profit from the war in Europe. The American government had somewhat supported this, knowing that there was a good opportunity in the war for the American economy, and thus they had helped arms companies in reaching out to the warring nations in the old world. Multiple of these nations had quickly agreed to a variety of deals on weapons, supplies and resources and American companies were starting to make their sales to the fronts in Europe. War Profiteering had begun.

The White House, Washington DC, November 1st, 1914

In November 1914, Theodore Roosevelt announced his plans for the second part of his third term as president. His plan, which he called “The Second Square Deal”, named after the successful and very popular prequel, was ambitious, but he said he didn’t see it likely to make all of the plan happen. “It doesn’t matter if I finish the plan or not though. For the plan will see benefit for all of our nation, and my successor will recognize that, and thus will see to it that it gets finished. I have faith in that, as I have faith in our government, even in dire times like these.”

The Second Square Deal included, but wasn’t limited to:
-Trustbusting and disassembling hurtful monopolies
-The founding of both more Natural Parks throughout the country, as well as ‘reservates’ for the remaining Native American tribes where they may live in peace, undisturbed by our fast-changing world.
-Greater development of the Pacific, Caribbean and Philippine territories.
-The “Uncle Sam’s Schools” programme, that aims to improve the quality of education both in the states and territories.
-Further integration of the state of Jefferson and infrastructural development for the state’s citizens and companies.
-Formation of the previously proposed GACA.
-Voting rights for women.
-Further introduction of laws regarding consumer protection.

Kraljevstvo Srbije

The third Balkan war is raging, all but a separate theatre from the wider Great War due to lack of Entente intervention. It’d been the most bloody conflict that east Europe had ever seen, hundreds of thousands of men dying in just weeks. The Serbs started with a flawed assault in the Struma basin, teaching them that plans that look good on paper don’t always work in actuality. Then the war was quiet for a while, until Serbian generals deemed that the front was undermanned, and Serb forces outnumbered. Thus, a second attack took place in the north, to scare the Bulgarians away from a counter offensive. This led to the capture of the city and region of Vidin, and gave Serbian forces a - finally - not mountainous frontline.

4LA_Mdy-NEsFF6DHYZ5H2ZCjIigLo-PGd75bii-kawRRD1l450vBvF4WdkZ1Riq8H-7ChS3B5xiHJmLH7ynTsHT3xczMPBXBxN9t6KFk54d8VI6M9keHAtcSvH5FmfFWRwmOq7sp

Then the Austrians arrived, led by Franz Conrad von Hotzendorf, who promptly ignored Serbian officials advice, and sent 400,000 men to their deaths in the Balkan mountains, for no significant gains. After witnessing this catastrophic failure on behalf of the Austro-Hungarian forces, King Peter I tasked Field Marshall Radomir Putnik to show the Central Powers how war is done. In a show of cunning and genius, Serbian forces misled the Bulgarians into thinking an attack was coming from the south, before surging forth along the Danube river in the north, capturing some 170km, along with the major city of Pleven. But more importantly, they captured or destroyed vital Bulgarian supplies, and almost halved the agricultural production of the country. This meant the Bulgarian troops defending Sofia, as well as the 200,000 or so civilians living in the valleys or the city itself, had to survive off of just what they produced. They had Austrian forces to the west, Serbs to the north, and the Ottomans pushing in from the south-east.

They were under siege.

tLF3E-u-G0_bzvZgSxypUweeYz28eaKMdC4eQ_jG1Tl4QA0xU2v86RBUiv9OhQaGPlNGEl3OJosrfYGHNbywdOFvpw6AEmDWpHB60Y7-KezgHHoGtbuOaqiX-ceOI5DAbxEvqOsa

From all these wars in recent years, one group of soldiers in particular had made quite the name for themselves. The men of 2nd Company, 1st Battalion in the 88th Belgrade Regiment went by a different title across Serbia. Led by one Captain Vasko Aleksic (born in Montenegro in 1886), they had fought in both Balkan wars prior to this one, where they quickly became the talk of the army due to their unwavering bravery, brutality, and the fact that they painted their faces red before every attack. Their name, “Mrtav život” (meaning “Dead Soldiers” in Serbian) came from the third Ottoman garrison who faced them, who claimed the Serbian soldiers continued fighting even after they had been killed. In the second Balkan war, they were deployed to northern Macedonia, where they suffered heavy casualties but were instrumental in holding the line during several enemy attacks. They also took part in the counter attack into the Bulgarian hills, where they supposedly fought savagely, fighting in such a brutal manner that their actions were close to being called atrocities. This war was no different. They were one of the first over the top in the October offensive, and fought on all the way to Pleven, taking trophies from the bodies of the men that they’d killed.

News of these men spread across Serbia like wildfire. Already far fetched stories became exaggerated even more, and soon the red-faced undead soldiers of the 88th Belgrade Regiment became national heroes. Soon after the siege of Pleven, in which the Captain personally risked his life to save countless Serbian soldiers in a daring field gun raid, Aleksic was awarded the Order of Karađorđe's Star, at a large ceremony in Macedonia. There he gave an inspiring speech to thousands of onlookers:

“Brothers and sisters, I am honoured and humbled to receive this medal, for a deed that any true Serbian would have done in my position. These times of war are proving the strength our people have from the Slavic blood that runs through our veins. Thrice I have faced our enemies, and thrice they have been driven from rightful Serbian lands. The cowards we face are nothing compared to the sons of Serbia. The soldiers we fight with pale in comparison to Serbian warriors. For every Serb that falls, ten of the enemy are taken with him. Believe me, once this war is over, the scourge of the Balkans - the traitorous Bulgarians - will be held accountable for the betrayal of our nation once again. Then, and only then, will Serbia reign as the strongest, dominant power in the Balkans. Then, and only then, will we unite Serbdom as a whole, and bring unity to the Slavic peoples, who have faced oppression for so long! само слога Србина спасава!”

The speech received thunderous applause, and soon the phrase “Only unity saves the Serbs” began to be plastered across the nation - billboards, newspapers, pro-war graffitti. Seeing his massive popularity as a tool to increase nationalism in the country, Peter I awarded Vasko Aleksic the title of Hero of Serbia, and used his likeness in propaganda to drive up more volunteers. He did also see some of the man’s statements in the speech as a threat however. Aleksic had just claimed the average Serbian soldier was leagues above the Austro-Hungarian men. Peter did not want to damage the relationship he had managed to build with the Austro-Hungarian empire, and so when this speech was rewritten in newspapers, publications were ordered to omit this statement.

With the frontline secure, soldiers in training had a more intensive 5 month course before they were deployed, in which they were taught how to best counter machinegun fire, flanking tactics and - due to the Mrtav život’s success - elements of psychological warfare. The armed forces continued to grow, with arms and artillery coming from the Germans, and motorvehicles made in Macedonia specifically for the army being used in the extensive logistical network that the Serbs had made. In fact, the success of this network led Field Marshall Radomir Putnik order a new type of division to be made - the Logistical Corps. Due to the need for men of fighting ages, older people and women were permitted to volunteer to serve in it, doing what they could by driving trucks and carts, building bridges and helping to maintain road networks. This branch of the armed forces worked closely with the Medical Corps, often working together to set up forward medical bases, or ferry wounded and healed troops to and from the front.Ozc7af_HTKfnugxPTtrjzoYvm8ZqhMg7yylSNqUJ2MmjtrGReouWi7lGMPtb-XPRngNds4Ta0OcCFOSVmV26BMu0YywpkUekyrPNfHhwPPIsi1js38sNfMbO2Lq7G4BaU2__YUMZ

Meanwhile, more places for Montenegrin apprentices are opened up to compensate for the amount of workers joining the armed forces, as hundreds join the construction or industrial practices. Work on the Berlin-Baghdad railway continues, but many begin expanding the industry in central Serbia, creating factories to produce consumer goods, whilst the main military industrial complex is in Macedonia. Many also go into farmwork, to learn the trade and also help on harvests for the next two years, as well as assisting in the exporting of livestock to Austria-Hungary and Germany.

The Austrian chief of staff von Hotzenberg is urged by Field Marshal Putnik to use the Serbian assault to his advantage, and attempt another attack. The sooner Sofia is captured, the sooner the Bulgarians would have to surrender.

Peter I also addresses Constantine I of Greece, and urges him to liberate ethnic Greeks in Thrace from Bulgarian occupation, before the opportunity is lost because of the advancing Ottomans. This would also cut off Bulgaria from any imports save from the Black Sea, which would bring the war to a close without any more needless loss of life. Further assaults would just lead to slaughter, and the Bulgarian people have to push the military to surrender in order to bring the death and hardship to an end.

The military are ordered to treat the civilian populace well when occupying towns - any rape, looting or murder would result in a court martial. However, they are ordered to fight with all the ferocity they can muster against the Bulgarian troops, only showing mercy if the enemy surrender and beg for their lives. Prisoner of War camps are set up in Serbia, where the prisoners are fed and clothed, but made to work on repairing war damage.

Finally, four aeroplane factories are commissioned in Leskovac, in order to begin producing the beginnings of the Serbian Air Force. The first plans are for biplanes, small but maneuverable, to be used as reconnaissance vehicles.

ACTIONS -

Internal reform

Eleftherios Venizelos and King George I of Greece along with parliament enacted bills to promote an increase in population growth offering benefits to families who have more than 3 children per family. Alexander 1 of Greece is sent to the borer of Bulgaria.

Economic actions

industrial growth within Greek industry is continued, the steel industry is also given more funds to improve as much as possible. Also farming production is ramped up using new farming technology in combination with more farmers in economy. The plan is to improve the entire economy of Greece along with massively increase the Greek populations in each province.

Foreign affairs

Eleftherios Venizelos along with the king send letters to the Ottoman empire condemning the actions of the Ottomans troops in the genocide against ethnic Greeks in phocaea. The two nations were supposedly friends. Prince Alexandros I along with most of the Greek army marched into Thrace and took it. The Greek government cited its reasoning for this action as protecting ethnic Greeks from Ottoman occupation.

Actions

- population growth encouraged

-economic growth and steel industry funding

-increase in farming output and workers

- massive public outcry against the Greek genocide

-march into thrace

The Homefront

With the outbreak of war on the continent of Europe once more, the Kingdom of The Netherlands officially issues a statement of neutrality. Though the Netherlands is not directly involved in the conflict being dubbed ‘The Great War’ streets are filled with hundreds of men, instilled with the glory of nationalism and empire waiting to join the army.

Great strides are made by the government to use the war to unite the country and destroy the ‘pillarized society’. Emphasis on a single unified Dutch culture is heavily encouraged throughout the country. Propaganda continues to fill the streets and the Queen herself commissions several military parades.

(Dutch troops parade through Amsterdam, late 1914)

The Industrial Effort

The growth of industry is heavily encouraged throughout the homeland. The Great War is seen as an opportunity to expand industries and break into new markets. Government subsidies, grants and tax breaks are offered to industrial firms looking to expand. Raw materials imported from VOK facilities in the colonies and spare capital from the government budget is personally invested in startups in an effort to spur industrial growth. In addition, the development of industrial theories begins. In late 1914 a system of quality assurance standards known as ISO 9000 is put into effect. Widespread acceptance and adoption of ISO 9000 has quickly spread throughout the country and assures Dutch products will be among the best available. Special attention is given to companies looking to expand the extraction of resources in the Dutch homeland.

______________________________________________________________________________

The Observation Effort

The course of the Great War has taken ‘unexpected’ turns in the eyes of Dutch High Command. Mobile warfare has begun to halt in favor of a more sedentary fighting style. Massive amounts of casualties plague both sides. Groups of military observers are sent to all belligerent nations in order to better learn how modern war is conducted and help develop Dutch doctrine. By the end of 1914, an extensive report on the observers findings across Europe sits on Cornelius Snjider’s desk.

______________________________________________________________________________

Foreign affairs

German victories in Belgium and France early in 1914 had caused a wave of refugees. Up to a million Belgian, and French refugees poured into the country. The welcoming and generous people of the Netherlands are expected to offer residence to the refugees and house them across the country. ______________________________________________________________________________

(I Corps training outside Amsterdam, instructed by a foreign advisor)

Armed neutrality has long been a policy of the Netherlands. With the outbreak of the Great War, the country has been thrust right into the middle of the action. Cornelius Snjiders responds with a full mobilization of the armed forces, redirecting them to the southern end of the country, closest to the fighting.

Improvement of the armed forces still continues unimpeded. With each passing day, foreign advisors improve every aspect of the army. The I Corps has developed into the pride of the Dutch army. The 42nd Infantry brigade in particular, headed by Christian Vrolijk has become the best of the best.

In addition to the mobilization and endless drilling, Snjiders petitions the government for permission to conscript another 100,000 men. Citing the reason that in order to efficiently protect to country, he will require more men.

Spanish observers watch from distant fields the chaos that occurs during the first few months of invasions across Europe. Spain had talks with England and had initially denied joining in on the war on either side due to being ill prepared for the combat. These observers confirmed the decision. Thousands of French were dead across their own lands, Belgium had been invaded and occupied in only a few weeks and now the Balkans were a mess with tens of thousands captured or dead across Entente and Central Power sides. With periscopes Spanish reporters document the incidences of massive carnage unlike what has ever been seen. Alfonso, nor Congress, have decided to censor these reporters gaining recounts from the battlefields. Generals across the board in Spain request for a larger land based military, petitioning for an increase of 100,000 more men to be added to the military by the end of 1915.

Booms of artillery are heard across Western Sahara, the military is restructuring its army into functional modular units encompassing multiple weapon elements and practicing with the new weapons delivered by Britain. The 1st Army is founded consisting of Army Corp Poder de España (23040) and Army Corp Escudo de España (23040). The Lee Enfield rifle is declared the standard infantry rifle of the military. Spanish contractors are asked to produce the weapon to the exact format as the law allows copy cat designs to be made when the manufacturer does not produce the item in the nation.

A young Spaniard named Issac Kronos, a moderate politician and city planner by trade, proposes an idea within Madrid’s City Council. Ildefons Cerda, several decades ago had created several books detailing how to develop a city’s railway systems and manage waterways to allow for transportation and proper city planning. In his book, Teoría de la Viabilidad Urbana y Reforma de la de Madrid ("Theory of Urban Roadspace and Reform of That of Madrid", 1861), he denotes how to structure a transit system to link major parts of the city together to provide easy access to all by rail, road, and waterway. Issac Kronos proposes to the Madrid council in a quote:

“The land must be accessible to the men and women of this land, to trade, transport, and provide greater access to the resources of Madrid.”

This idea catches the eye of politicians to the Spanish Congress who begin to look into the development of a national transit system of railroads.

Actions Taken:

Spanish war reporters and tacticians begin to observe the war and the methods used to conduct warfare. This information is relayed back to Spanish generals who are counseled on the new forms of warfare being conducted.

The attempt to recruit another 100,000 men into the army is started.

Army restructuring is implemented based on the modern army model.

Plans for a national railway system are drawn up starting in Madrid and spreading outward to every major town. The plan starts with connecting all of the railway systems in Madrid by December 1915. The expansion to every major city would finish by December of 1918.

Spoiler

I will have an aneurysm if restructuring the army fails and I am unable to recruit 100k people over a years time when everyone is conscripting 5 million people out the gate in half the time and shoving them into units with no issues.

VICTORY AT BOHAI BAY

In late September a fleet, holding most of the heavy ships of the Imperial navy sailed into Bohai bay to destroy possible Chinese naval opposition and set up a blockade. However instead of merely the Chinese navy it found that there was a combined German and Chinese navy. Giving definitive proof that the state of Germany has been interfering with Asian affairs. The Imperial navy whilst outclasssed by the German navy and the puppet Beiyang fleet, managed to defeat the enemy with great vigour and with absolute loyalty to the emperor. Now the pacific lies open to the Empire of the rising sun. Will you aid the empire in freeing Asia from Imperialist influence ? Then sign up at your local recruitment office or buy war bonds near your local Imperial garrison.

Actions

Admiral Shimamura noticed during the battle of Bohai Bay that the German ships had much less casualties than should have been expected. With victory coming at a harsh price. He specifically noted that shots that hit the hull which should have sunk the ships did not. Even as the areas that were hit should have been filled with water. Wishing to know the secret behind this technique of the Germans the 2nd class battleship that had been sunk by the Japanese navy is to be investigated and the secret that kept it from sinking reverse-engineered if possible. Furthermore, if any munitions of the for now designated ‘light shot’ are found in any of the ship wrecks orders are to give it to the R&D division to see if they can also reverse-engineer it. [MOD]

Seeing as a large part of the Imperial navy was destroyed at the battle of Bohai Bay it is logical that the navy should replenish it’s numbers. Thus, the emperor and naval command have ordered another 10 destroyers to be build, replenishing the losses of Bohai Bay. Seeing as the 10 destroyers from the beggining of the year are already done there should be room in the dockyards. On top of that 1 dreadnought and 2 battlecruisers are commisioned to help replace the losses of Bohai Bay and strengthen the navy. In some ways Bohai Bay was a boon to the Japanese navy as it meant that many of the outdated ships were due to be replaced by more modernized versions [MOD]

With the naval part of the war proceeding expertly the focus is now put on the land war. Knowing that it is heavily outnumbered as of right now the Imperial Japanese Army are ordered to fortify their positions. These positions are focused around rivers and open stretches of land. In particulair the open stretched of land are to be fortified, seeing as a river crossing can easily be stopped with a well-trained brigade. These fortifications mostly rely on machine guns as it is expected that the Beiyang forces will mostly rely on their overwhelming numbers rather than large amount of artillery support, especially once the blockade starts taking effect.[MOD]

On top of that 500k more soldiers are to be mobilized, if possible it is hoped that they will be ready around late 1915, seeing as a year is adequate enough to properly train soldiers. The recruitment is not to be rushed but seeing as the Empire still has a large available manpower pool this should not be too hard. [MOD]

With the wish to free up troops for the main front and to involve the Korean part of the empire more in the war Koreans are (to a limited extent) allowed to enlist in the army. This mainly involves the local garrison, with this new act Koreans are allowed to recruit in the Garrison until at maximum 20% of the Korean garrisons are made up of sufficiently loyal Koreans. On top of that ten thousand Koreans are allowed to enlist for front-line combat. Though doing so they would be mostly added to Japanese units. To make sure that the Koreans and Japanese will intermingle and thus cause the Koreans to become more loyal to the empire. (With there also being a focus on assigning Koreans to squads that are not too racist.) There is one exception though. A single brigade of 3000, consisting mostly of Koreans is allowed to form. Mostly for the purpose of propaganda but also to see if the Koreans are sufficiently loyal. [MOD]

The marine force is expanded to 10 thousand soldiers. This is to make way for the second part of the grand battleplan. They are to, similairly like with the other marines, train mainly on naval landings and establishing beachheads. The hope is that if succefull the marines can help in a crucial future push for Bejing. [MOD]

To enable all of these actions to happen and to get sufficient fundings for military projects the economy is partially-mobilized and the military/navy budget is VASTLY increased. Accompanying this are increased war-taxes except for producers of military arms. They are encouraged to expand so as to better fuel the Imperial war machine [MOD]

Finally some propaganda is spread around the empire. Urging the people of it to unite against the Imperialist threats that want to subjugate Asia under them. This is also part of creating a common goal for all people under the empire, as well as making the peoples under it more united. The hope is that this will decrease racism and further work to make Korea a part of the empire. [MOD]

French Frontline Trenches

German troops had failed to take Paris, but it was a minor setback. Back across the Aisne River the Germans regrouped and prepared for the next phase of the war. Millions fought on the frontlines. A young Austrian, a Corporal in the German Army sat in the trenches on the frontlines. Others passed by and ran moving from position to position, he was enjoying his meal. A rare time to be able to enjoy an honest lunch.

“Runner!!!” An officer called, it was too good to be true. But he was a soldier, a proud German soldier. He abandoned his food and ran around the corner where a larger man stood holding a folded leather case. “You there!” The young man turned to him standing at attention “Yes sir?” The officer held out the leather case “Command wants this ran to the third battalion immediately, what's your name?”

The young man accepted the case putting it securely in his shoulder slung satchel “Lance Corporal Adolf Hitler Sir.” The Officer nodded “Well get moving Lance Corporal, don’t let the Kaiser down!” with a quick shove the young man took off, turning left..right..running through the winding trenches until he reaches a ladder climbing his foot stumbled, before crawling out of the trench. Dirt and blood flow through the air as artillery and mortar shells struck the ground.

It was just ahead..another hundred feet..safety and cover. He lunged into the trench narrowly being struck by a mortar shell that landed outside, he landed atop of someone. He rolled going to get up, he looked down and he froze a moment staring at the tan uniform of the human being he fell atop of. The soldier stood up raising his sidearm aimed at the German Corporal, he pulled the trigger and the gun clicked but never fired. He charged forward tackling the man into the trench wall, the two fought over each other. Adolf wasn’t a strong soldier and quickly found the fight not going his way.

He fell to the ground, looking up the British Soldier drew his knife. Suddenly a loud noise filled his ears as the soldier fell back against the wall as blood spattered. A soldier grabbed Adolf’s arm hoisting him up “Go get back behind me!” he ordered, he didn’t wait to be told again as he took off back past a group of german soldiers pushing through the trench. He ran into an officer, his uniform was marked ‘3rd Battalion.’ with a breath of relief “Sir! Sir! This is for you! Orders from command!” he called, they exchanged looks a moment before he took the papers “Good work lad, get back there and rest.” The officer pushed past him, Adolf stumbled past into a small makeshift shack. Several wounded men lay inside, others exhausted from the fighting. He laid against the wall closing his eyes. The fight for the Vaterland was long from over.

(Entente & German Leadership: Portrayed)

December 2nd, 1914

German Airfield, Undisclosed Location

Eckhart Glockner smirked as he read the reports come in from the Belgium Front, The Zeppelin devastated Entente Forces. He sat down his cup of coffee watching as a group of men tried aiding a another plane for take off. They were excellent for recon and guidance, but they were barely good enough for much else. As a flight engineer for DELAG he was ordered more or less by the Kaiser himself to aid in the creation of a more purposed German Air Force. They had to try harder, more robust designs, perhaps even a mounted machine gun for combat. “They’ve done it for cars...why not a plane?” He wondered. He turned as men rushed to the field, one of the Zeppelins had returned. He stood as if to go help. An officer quickly came over “Sir, There is an announcement on the Radio. You best come hear, the Kaiser is making a speech.”

15 Nautical Miles North off the German Coast

NRRRutZ.jpg

The Ship rammed straight through a wave as the others came with it, The enemy had been spotted and the orders had been spread. They were to meet the British Scum and drive them from their waters.

Admiral Scheer stood on the bridge of his Dreadnought as the fleet made its way to intercept the enemy fleet. He surrendered the bridge to his captain as he turned to hear a speech from the Radio.

“A momentous hour has struck for Germany. Envious rivals everywhere force us to legitimate defense. The sword has been forced into our hands. I hope that in the event that my efforts to the very last moment do not succeed in bringing our opponents to reason and in preserving peace, we may use the sword, with the help of God, so that we may sheathe it again with honor. War will demand enormous sacrifices by the German people, but we shall show the enemy what it means to attack Germany. And so I commend you to God. Go forth into the churches, kneel down before God, and implore his help for our brave army.”

“For it is with his divine grace, and guidance that Germany and its peoples shall push through this dark hour against those who would destroy everything we have worked for centuries to build. So I swear, that until I draw my last and final breath! Germany will never surrender! Germany will prevail! Let us cheer! Cheer for the thousand year Reich!”

Russia

During the early months of the Civil War, Chairman Purishkevich seemed to disappear, rarely being seen outside of his office in the Duma’s temporary capital building in Moscow while Ivan Ilyin led the country and its military effort for the time. It was long rumored that he had shut himself in while working on the first draft of the Constitution, before bringing it to the entire Duma. By the end of the third month of the war, the Chairman would give a speech to the Duma as the new tricolor flag of Russia flew behind them.

Today is a day for the people of Russia to not mourn for the loss of their country, and for some their identity. The Tsar fled his palace when the Duma arrived and put a declaration of rights on his desk, demanding his signature. The traitor Grigori Rasputin was found cowering under the bed of the young Prince he claims to have saved and is charged with treason due to reports of an affair with the Tsarina, a secret which is known by many and discussed by few, damaging the dignity of our great country. No longer. The Tsar denied his right to remain as the head of a constitutional monarchy and instead fled so he could keep power out of the hands of the people. In the east, the Soviet’s seek to overthrow all government, fighting for Marx’s ideas of a violent revolution but fail to see the greater threat that this division will bring to the country. When Russia is undefended the vultures will come to rip it apart, even more, so we must rise together as a country and end this division, fighting for the rights the Tsar and Soviets seek to take away from us. Nearly a decade ago we were promised rights, fair elections, and much more but they never came. Now they have, and will not be taken away from us. We will offer peace to the Tsarists, allowing Tsar Nicholas to sign the document and will admit his power as being derived from the Duma and thus the people. Any action he wishes to take will need to be voted on and approved by the Duma, finally allowing Russia to modernize. If Ukraine and Poland will accept, we will make peace and form a union of independent states, which would unite us on the international stage and ensure their protection from hostile powers. If all or most parties accept these offers, we will be able to focus our efforts on the enemies who seek to take the basic rights of man away violently, in favor of an anarchist and unprotected country. The Soviets.

ACTION

The Duma signs the Russian Constitution written by Purishkevich. It is modeled off of the American Constitution and the French Declaration of the Rights of Man of the Citizen. It guarantees basic rights as well as voting rights for women but does not protect communists or socialists.

The Tsarists are offered peace on the grounds of the Tsar, or his son, signing the Constitution and relinquishing power to the Duma.

Ukraine and Poland are offered peace on the grounds they create similar constitutions and join a Russian Union, uniting the countries internationally and ensuring their independence from hostile powers. They also must hand over Russian assets that have been taken, and allow the rest to be peacefully vacated. Other details could be discussed by the two powers.

The reserves are called forth by the Duma while propaganda calls for volunteers who are ready to serve their country.

The Duma declares neutrality in World War I

Propaganda regarding the Soviet’s is soon widespread, showing the poverty of the communes.

OTTOMAN EMPIRE

The Great Bloody war, as a small Syrian Farmer had called it, had reached the Ottoman Empire. Young Muslim men were sent off to the army, being ordered to fight for the salvation of their country and their Muslim brothers and sisters being threatened by the powers of Britain, Bulgaria and France.

At the outbreak, war had the connotation of defeat in the Ottoman Empire. Most of the wars that the Empire had fought in the 20th century had resulted in some form of territorial loss, but that was the least of their concerns for the Ottoman Administrators. With every section of land that is lost, the people lose hope, they lose their pride for the Eternal Empire. An Empire that had lasted for 900 years, that had ruled over the Arab world for over 500 years, was looking weak, and fractured.

However, when the first news came in from the front lines, many people rejoiced. The soldiers were pushing forward, gaining land and territory. They were driving the British back, which for many across the Empire, gave them hope, that perhaps, the Ottoman Empire truly stands a chance of winning in a major war.

One story that resonated through the mouths of Ottoman boys and girls was the story of a regiment of Janissary troops that valiantly broke through Bulgarian front lines and slaughtered 3 entire Bulgarian regiments by disguising themselves as Bulgarian Soldiers. Once they got to the secondary Bulgarian lines, it is said that the commander, the son of a wealthy Palestinian Merchant, fought until the only weapon he had on him was his helmet, and was allegedly shot 13 times, and before he fell, his last words were the iconic Islamic Chant, Allahu Akbar.

However, the war was nowhere near from completion, and the Ottoman Army was in a poor shape to say the least. Soldiers were being sent with barely any training, and in some cases not even a functioning rifle. The Empire begins to purchase massive amounts of weapons to hopefully outfit most, if not the entire army. A new organizational structure is also implemented, created by a combination of military minds such as the various German Officers in the military, and some prominent pashas. All Ottoman soldiers that were called up will receive a gun and basic military training, for the Sultan commands them to do their duty.

Actions

-Ottoman Empire purchases massive amounts of weapons from the United States to outfit soldiers that are in need of a weapon.

-The Empire pushes for training for all the new soldiers that were called up, this is done with a new organizational structure and training methods.

-The Empire continues to try and exploit the oil reserves that are rumored to exist in Mesopotamia and Arabia.

1914 (Later Months)

War, war, and more war! What is already being called a European conflict has exploded. Tens of thousands are already dead. Most nations firmly believed they could win, in one master stroke. The German’s almost did, to be frank. 3 million men slammed into Belgium, violating it’s neutrality. The French did as well, both sides violating Belgian rights.

--

“An excerpt from the fighting that has ensued.”

And so, lines in the sand are drawn! With a French failure to meet German demands, war seems possible. The German, Austro-Hungarians, Italians, Ottomans, and Serbians all begin mobilization. As a direct result France, Bulgaria, Japan, and Great Britain do the same. This just makes matter worse, everyone pointing fingers. It's all settled however by June 20th. Germany officially declares war on France. Spirits are high. EVERY nation believes it will be a short, quick war. Many hope it to be over by christmas. Officers lead their large column of men, music playing giddy tunes. People begin to volunteer by the hundreds. And so as mobilization ends, we reach the month of July. War plans begin, who knows how the fighting will go?

Captured-Italian-soldiers-are-escorted-t

Mobilization begins, the first combatants ready being Germany, France, and Italy. Amidst all this chaos many simply don't believe a war will actually happen. That hope is SMASHED, as the first battle of the war takes place! A single Italian scout high up in the alps encounters a French probe. Single handedly, he holds them off. With just a rifle and three extra clips, he kills four. He is later blasted to bits by field artillery. This is perhaps an ominous foreshadowing of mountain warfare. It is now August 2nd, when the war well and truly begins.

A Belgian NCO shares a cigarette with a comrade, looking to the skies. He sees what appears to be three dots moving high up. Pigeoning it back to command, he gets out some field glasses. Panning up the first thing he sees is massive Black Iron Crosses. Germans. Planes fly lower, guiding the zeppelins in. Over a hill, he sees hundreds of spikes come into view, Then faces, then grey torsos. Germans, in all their glory, marching by the million, invade Belgium. The Zeppelins drop bombs on Belgium troops as the German group smashes them out of the town of Liege. The same day French troops turn up on Belgium soil, with NO permission. However King Leopold knew he could not fight both of them, and reluctantly sides with France. The French and German plans both called for marching into Belgium swiftly. But that is not where the first major battle takes place.......

_75058029_75049947.jpg

The first real battle takes place on the German/French border. The French enact PLAN 17, a righteous, bold, sexy, sleek, cunning, smart, and overall top notch offensive plan. Officers on horse back waving sabers lead large troops of men, all brightly clad in a blazing Blue and Red. Military bands play cheery music, as the French troops attack on the German right. They encounter German army group 7, mainly comprised of eastern Prussians, freed up from Russia not being in the war. France led the attack on German positions. Most French officers did not account for machine guns and modern artillery. And they lead their men into slaughter. Waves of men assault German positions in forest and hill tops. Maxims begin to chatter, rifles pop, and artillery rounds THUMP. French are killed by the dozen, though German casualties are also high. The French are decimated, and sent retreating back to their side of the border. However now shows a major German problem. Their field Generals were notoriously independent. And with Italian divisions arriving daily, a counter assault is launched against orders. Now a German army is advancing en masse against French positions. Chauchats and rifles mow them down, as they charge in waves. The Germans are sent reeling back, and a MAJOR French counter to the counter begins. France troops advance on a soon to be notorious hilltop in Alsace Lorraine. On august 22nd, in a single day, France has 27,000 men killed in action.  As the battles die down, elsewhere other battles are just starting

France

The movement of factories was one that was one of those fatal choices. France bent a lot of her effort to moving industry. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers are charged to assist. The ones not going and dying in the bloody front that is. As a result France manages to salvage a good amount of her mobile industry and stockpiled resources. However more permanent fixtures such as the valuable coal mines and equipment are seized by Germans.

Conscription though getting 8 million under arms at once is not possible. Many millions however are pouring from the 1st layer of reserves. They were the ones now being thrown into the front, the new ones to die.

For now Joffre is still kept as commander of the French forces. He was beloved of the people, and thought to have a valuable mindset. Many still believe in the offense, though admit it was an embarrassing defeat.

Taxes and Food are grumbled about but accepted.

Research goes well, as the French scramble to match the German’s heavy artillery.

U.S

Though small the army of the U.S is relatively modern. The vast sum of their numbers are still sitting on the Mexican border, sweltering. However as reserves are called up morale grows. They see the brotherhood growing. However the army and congress is vastly unprepared for anything resembling actual build up.

Great debates begin on the proposed Second Square Deal. For now nothing is agreed upon. But for once it seems the damn parties are debating, not arguing. It was likely it would get passed through next year in one form or another. The hotly contested issues are the GACA, Women’s Vote, and overall meddling with the big business. Who could guess the rich to stay rich?

Serbia

Mr Aleski’s speech is well received, many young Serbs aspiring to be him. Though he and his regiment become angered at their Speech being edited. They cared not what the Austrians think. As a result the regiment post the full speech, certainly not helping with tension.

The new recruits reworked training system will take longer, but help increase life expectancy. Many recently wounded Serb veterans begin to train the next generation.

The Serbs indeed had learned a lot of the power of logistics. They were vital keys to both their offensives. The new Corp while mainly full of old men and women, will grow fast. However they will need training, and time.

As more Serbs join the army, more Montenegrins with the expanded act move in to work.

Serbian treatment is still rough of the Bulgarians. Many had been fighting them in three wars, and all had lost comrades. As a result atrocity is common place, Bulgarians fleeing into the mountains to escape the Serbs. It becomes hard to locally supply, meaning a massive strain on the new logistics corp.

Greece

The increased family plan kicks off well. Many already meet the requirements and enjoy the extra benefits. The population and industry plan continues at a small rate, it will take time.

Farming reforms go quicker, as the relatively infertile Greek land is improved.

The Greek occupation of Thrace causes quite the stir. Many agreed with it however, weary of the Ottomans, Serbs, and Austrians.

The Netherlands

Depillarization is a failure, it is far too early to be a method of Dutch thinking.

Weary of a possible war cutting off trade, the interest into home industry is well placed. The Government is actually praised as they begin to grow business.

The Refugees in growing numbers are flooding the Netherlands. Almost all of Belgium is occupied by the end of the year. As a result quaint Dutch cities and farms are the place for refugee camps. It angers the conservatives, and Centralist. However most take them in and feed them, improving local relations.

Full mobilization is enacted as the army moves into defensive postures.

However assuming the improvement of the armed forces is ‘unimpeded’ is an exaggeration. Just taking experience from foreign advisors does not mean the men improve. Almost all the men are conscripts, and little concerned with being a standing army. However the standing army is learning their lessons well, modernizing and restructuring.

Spain

Army reorganization goes as planned! 100k new men are recruited in.

Trying to make Spain a railway system that extensive however is not as smoothly implemented. It will take time and vast sums of money to make such an extensive line. Foreign investment or smaller ambitions will be needed. For now Madrid and it’s neighboring towns are the start.

Japan

No phosphorescent shells or night time equipment is really salvaged. However they did notice the Germans used massive searchlights to pinpoint enemy ships. A lesson learned hard. The German ship pulled out is found to have wonderfully engineered well everything. Their armor is thick, and compartments in their hull allow water in without the ship sinking. Reverse Engineering is not possible yet.

Ship production goes as planned.

Defensive measures also go as planned.

Mobilization goes as planned.

The Korean acts help solidify the imagery of Japan caring for it’s slav- citizens in Korea. Many indeed do enlist, almost all wanting to join the all Korean brigade. Garrisons begin to be freed up.

Marines are recruited however training for them has to start all over again.

The government military spending act is passed.

Propaganda has little effect known yet.

Germany

The German army begins to entrench as the French do the same.

“Combat” is a relative term for airplanes. Instead a premier recon plane is put forth, to be ready for production by the end of the year. It is the precursor to the Albatros.

Russia

The new constitution has mixed reviews. Socialist of course despised it. But by and large most if not all of the articles are supported. Plenty of Duma statesmen want to rush in a new government. They saw a drawn out civil war killing them all. Not too mention the massive war erupting to the west. It passes with a resounding vote to aye!

Though not disagreeing, the Tsarist also don’t openly agree. Nicholas and his cabinet, advisors, and generals are concerned of being purged. Instead they dig their heels in, and entrench key areas. As the fighting draws out, the broach the possibility of a less radical change. Tsar Nicholas admits he would be inclined to sing it. But wants his family, generals, and politicians to have a new part in this government, even if he must relinquish autocratic power. It would seem the Tsarist were prolonging the war to at least get in on the growing government.

Ukraine agrees and is discussed elsewhere. Poland disagrees for now. (Also mentioned elsewhere)

Ottomans

Shipping was a major problem from the start. Ottoman merchant marines could not exactly travel through the suez or Gibraltar freely. Instead it had to be landed in places like Iran, and then shipped by land over. However the

Janissaries receive the beginnings of an American stockpile.

With little else to do the mobilized army begins the training regimen.

Oil production continues as stated before.

Spaniards wave flags all across the country, conscription of the army has been declared unanimously by the government, Spain is mobilizing. The neutral country builds a protective shell of troops against possible military actions by her neighbors. Alfonso XIII declares in a congressional meeting, “No foreign army shall ever conquer Spain! Men serve your country and join me! Protect Iberia!”

Many Spanish soldiers are seen exchanging their issued standard uniform of red trousers and blue dress coat for a newly designed brown drab uniform. This command comes from the internal military council determining the resource fluctuation that would occur with importing dyes and materials not made in Spain. The blue dress uniform as it is called, is declared to be in use during formal events and is not authorized to be used in combat.

“Your Majesty, it would take time to provide this new uniform to the military,” spoke General Hijuero. Alfonso stroked his shaved chin, “Yes, but we have also neglected the army for several decades, the issue of exchanging this uniform should be no issue,” replied the king. Nodding respectively, the general continued, “This is true my King, but how are we to gain the uniforms to cloth every man? If we are to establish a million man army, how are we to effectively cloth each man?” “Is the history of industry not that of the textile manufacturer? The ability to cloth every man should be no issue, as men are trained, they should receive their equipment. General, to conscript does not mean 1 million men will suddenly be in the military and to this, each man will be equipped as they enter and finish training. We are not reinventing the wheel, we are only having it mass produced. We have the industry, submit the papers and the men will have what they need.”

Actions Taken:

Conscription of the army, increasing the military to 1 million men by the by January 1916. (Mobilization)

Blue Dress Uniform is written into the military codex of rules and regulations to not be fit for combat and is exchanged for a new ‘Service’ uniform consisting of brown clothing that is mass produced in Spain. In exchange of the loss of flash, a swagger stick is implemented and provided to all officers and non- commissioned officers. The Blue Dress uniform is designated as a formal attire clothing.
