[Red = Vathacian States, Purple = Knyos, Orange = Myridios, Teal = Amidia, Green = ‘Barbarian' Kingdoms, Yellow = Nomadic peoples & tribes]

The city of Polis, once the cultural, economic, and political center of the Vathacian League, later the Vathacian Empire. A city home to the greatest works of the civilized world. A city that once commanded armies across Aegos, and asserted its influence even farther now stands alone. It has been over 40 years since the last Hegemon was ousted by a coalition of Polisian factions and the Periochi were established by the signing of the Práxi Enótitas.

After the reign of the Hegemons and the collapse of the Vathacian Empire, The power vacuum left in Polis led to a period of disaster. Foreign powers stripped Polis of control of most of its lands and territories. Hegemony over what remains of Vathacian territory is nothing more than symbolic. Many states flock to foreign powers, believing their fortunes will better there. In the wake of the collapse the Polisian factions waged war across the city, covering Polis in death, disease, and devastation. After over a year of conflict a victorious faction, Illerius, emerged and established the rank of Polemarch. The rise of the Polemarch ceased the city’s internal conflicts and secured peace with Polis’s various neighbors. Finally after almost a decade of instability, there was peace.

Available Factions

Polis is divided into 10 Periochi, or districts. Every Periochi is governed by the Archon of one of Polis’s 10 factions. The Archons, though mostly independent, still bow to the Polemarch who maintains direct rule over key sections of Polis.

Each Periochi has vague cultural traits that will serve as a guideline for you to expand upon. However it is to be noted that they all stem from original Polisian culture, a culture very heavily influenced by Vathacian Culture, which is based of that of Ancient Greece

Massive destruction of Oreus during the Polisian civil wars forced the economically struggling district to accept mostly unfavorable trade deals with the Inner Periochi, particularly Decelea, in order to gain financial support. These trade agreements remain mostly intact, which has prompted widespread resentment from Oreusians. The culture of Oreus is similar in nature to their Sestosian neighbors, however it is significantly less pacifistic and more traditional in nature.

However they were eventually forced out from the city walls. Application

1. Thespiae

2. Demetrios of Thespiae is a military man by any right- A big and boisterous commander, those under his command theorize he was a local noble who rose high through the ranks through his sheer charisma, for nobody knows where he was truly born.  Not lacking in political skill, some say that the previous Archon allowed him to purchase the seat for half its worth.  And the people loved him- his rough way of dealing with the inner city folk earned him respect amongst the country aristocracy.  Dissatisfied with how things are, he has dreams of restoring Thespiae to its former glory... if he can deal with the city boys, and make use of the vast natural resources of the Thespiaen country.

The man, however, is not the leader.  Demetrios is in private a high-functioning alcoholic, his boisterous attitude being a coping mechanism to earn praise.  The love of the people does not fill the hole in him that tells him he isn't worth them yet, that he isn't worthy of what he has.  So he will continue to strive to be bigger and better than what he is... and perhaps that will make him feel like he deserves to be in this world.

3. An agricultural society, Thespiae is proud of its landowning elite, with their vast farms.  These are the men who make up the elite cavalry of Thespiae.  Although the smallest in population of the outer districts, Thespiae enjoys its legacy and holds that it is no less than the others but far greatest.  Whereas other districts hold themselves to the state, Thespiaens hold themselves to Thespiae.  And Thespiae's enemies are the city boys, the people of the walls who so rudely cast them out from their homes.  Leading in efforts to cut off food to the city, the Thespiaens are an aggressive people who hope to achieve their former glory and bring themselves back to proper standing.

After losing all they did, Thespiaens are fiercely protective of what they see as their land- even in the case of the property of a neighbor, a community will rally and fight anyone seeming to be encroaching upon it, be it thieves or rich nobles from the inner city.  The laws of Thespiae deal with such men harshly- the illegal seizure of land is considered to be a far worse crime than murder itself.

4. Thespiaen Cavalry is a powerful force to be reckoned with- born and bred in the plains of Thespiae, they are the greatest horses and horsemen in the whole city, skilled in maneuvering their horses in such a way that they can strike and retreat in a matter of moments.

Application

1. The District you are applying for: Argos

2. Your Archon's (leader) name and history: Andronikos Mourtzouphlos or Andronicus the Bushy-Eyebrowed. A man of very unusual appearance. He has a limp, a stutter, very bushy eyebrows as his nickname suggests, and was known universally as a fool and an idiot. That was, until he started writing his history...'Here Andronikos presents his inquiries...' he began, unveiling the 12-book masterpiece as one of the greatest historical works ever written. Certain circles started to take more seriously this laughing stock of a nobleman, one going so far as to call him the Father of History, until the previous Archon himself, a veteran of the Civil Strife, an hardy warrior called Alexios began to groom the boy as his successor, recognising his intelligence and potential in spite of his obvious flaws. Such was Alexios' respect among the people that he was able to persuade the electorate to vote for Andronikos on his retirement from politics.  Thus someone who would usually be regarded as something as a joke candidate became Archon. Now Andronikos must guide his district to glory and prosperity in these uncertain times.

It is worth mentioning that there are some rumours that Andronikos is overcome by Eros or erotic love for his beautiful wife, Zoe, and that she is the real power behind the Archonate. But in a republican, democratic system such a rumour is unlikely, for the business of state is done in public, and not in privy chambers where who is in power can be far less certain.

3.Argos represents one of the intellectual heartlands of the world. Fiery debate is everywhere, and elections are harshly contested. But there is more than just a civic side to be an Argive. An Argive must be an hoplite in battle and without his shield and spear he is no citizen at all. Thus, the intellectual, civic and military duty of every Argive is drilled into each and every free adult male. This culture of civic service does not just extend to the middle class citizenry, but to the upper classes to, who feel a strong sense of public duty. They build great public works as opposed to closed-off private estates, and take up position on the battlefield alongside their less wealthy fellows.

Law in Argos is harshly dealt. The most horrific punishments can be dealt for what other districts might consider minor crimes. The civic duty of the armed citizenry to enforce the law, and their willingness to be ruthless in doing so, mean the streets are well-ordered. Argos does not suffer from much hooliganism.

The flowering of intellectual life has led to a recent religious revival. The purpose and meaning of the Gods are discussed daily, and the people tend to be pious and observant of religious practices. However, with the free-flowing nature of these debates dangerous new religions and ideas can emerge that could be the source of strife.

 4. Unique unit (military). The Sacred Band of Argos represents fully the kind of civic duty embodied by the wealthier parts of Argos. Encased in bronze or iron and trained from a very young age, these represent some of the finest hoplites around, preferring to fight on foot alongside their fellow citizens rather than atop a horse as some other nobles might. As such, they have plenty to shell out on gear - making them exceedingly well-equipped.

1. Oreus

2. Your Archon's (leader) name and history

Lucretius Julius is a stubborn man.

He was the son of a miner, and grew up following his father's footsteps only to make an awful living, barely sustaining his family. The pay was specially bad due to the mistreatment of the Docelean trade prices. He joined the Legions and proved to be a skilled opponent. As he climbed through the ranks he reached the rank of princeps Sunmus, he vowed to claim Oreus it's right to economic and total sovereignty. The people looked to their Archon, a familiarized military tactician optimistic to prove his worth. He readied for war..

3. An explanation of your districts culture

The people of Oreus are as hardworking as they are loyal. Their mines breed strong soldiers and their abundance of wood provided them with homes. Their tough living conditions are dictated by  the unjust trade prices they are forced.to accept. The people are enraged and their wealty of natural resources only made it easier to form a militaristic society.

4. Unique unit (military)

The infamous Oreusian Legionnaires are a force to be reckoned with, equipped with a set of heavy iron armor and round iron shields. They rely on their jevalins from afar and broadswords up close to wreak havoc on their foes and are considerable adverseries to all infantry.
