Dissolution

1860, a year that will go down as one of the most significant in history; The final year of the great American experiment. Tensions for decades have been rising now. The “Band-Aids” congress put over the open wound of slavery were insufficient. With every new territory the debate was risen again.

How long could it go on for? Almost a hundred years is the answer. Leading up to 1860 the south was in almost open revolt. At odds with each other, and the Union as a whole, there was major discontentment. Slave states saw their very way of life being infringed upon. Wealthy aristocrats strove to maintain power over the inferior white and black neighbors. Cotton was booming.

The northern states for their part was not a unified utopia. Conflicting business, political, and foreign ideas were leading to clashes. Many simply could not agree. Immigrants flooded the north, forming their own communities and power blocs.

Though heavily industrialized and populous, the North was led by cronies and congressional snakes. Policy was geared towards profit, and the Federals were on everyone’s front porch. It all came to a climax in the elections of ‘60.

It was a four way run, with various parties involved. The Southern Democrat, Republican, Northern Democrat, and Constitutional Union parties all had candidates. It boiled down to two. Lincoln, and Breckenridge. In the end though it was clear Lincoln would win. This lead to nation breaking machinations…

South Carolina was the first to secede Mississippi and the rest of the deep south soon followed. What began was a domino effect, The upper south came next. Virgina, North Carolina, Tennessee, one by one, secession after secession the ‘United’ States slowly collapsed. New York was the first of the Northern states to secede, Ohio came next. In the confusion a New English offer of annexation towards Canada was discovered. As 1860 became 1861 the Union had completely disintegrated in all but the once capital and small forts scattered across the once nation.

The United States was no more

The Fallout

Following the collapse of the United States of America, a major power vacuum was left in its wake. The Federal Armies had evaporated, desertion and defection had set in. Only small bastions of the Federal government remained most notably in scattered forts, arsenals, and Washington D.C. itself.

The government of the newly independent states resembled the former nation in one form or another. The vast majority simply kept to their governments, state governments now in power. State militias became the sole military units at the states disposal

The tensions of the pre-collapse period remain ever prevalent. The abolitionist movement continues its growth in the free northern states. In the south, african-americans remain in shackles. The massive cotton industry is now fractured, as a trade war of massive proportions brews in the deep south. The North is no stranger to the tensions gripping the continent either. The offer of the upper New English states to join the British Empire has not gone forgotten.

A massive conflict between the newly independent states of America is almost bound to occur in one form or another.

OOC

This FRP will begin in a historical manner with a start date of January 1st, 1861. The Governments, administrations, and leadership (both domestic and militarily) of the individual states will remain the same as they are in our timeline. As the game progresses, and history takes an alternate course, introduction of custom/special characters will be allowed.

Alliances, Unions, and confederacies will be permitted within reason.

Any U.S. State pictured on the map above is available

Desired State; Commonwealth of Virginia

History of said State’s history, leadership, and government; Virginia has for a while now been the lone “North State in the South” Meaning she was the South’s sole industrial power. With railroads, forts, and mines, she blossomed.A vast array of former presidents and generals came from this land. Why Washington himself lived here! Virginia was also the first American colony established by the British.

Currently she is upset with both the deep south and north. She had voted for a minority in the elections, and was displeased to be beat by both Beckenridge and Lincoln. Now Virginia will forge her own path….

Desired State: Maine

History of said State’s history, leadership, and government:

Maine had been a part of the American experiment from the very beginning, being part of the original Thirteen that took the fateful decision to rebel against their overlords. A frontier State with Canada, Maine’s early history was characterised by division and conflict. Harshly split between Loyalists and Revolutionists, it changed hands multiple times during the Revolutionary Wars and the War of 1812.

The recent collapse of the American state has led many in Maine to take the British offer seriously, in a time where desperate measures become daily practice. Britain shares Maine’s anti-slavery commitments, and in these anarchic times, it pays to have powerful friends.  But if they to throw their lot in with the Whigs and Tories across the pond, they had better do it on their terms, or so Governor Israel Washburn Jr. would have it!

Nominal Leader/President/Governor/etc.: A prominent but pragmatic leader, Washburn in many ways represented the archetypal Republican. But now that pragmatism comes to the fore and he is facing calls to stand alone or align with Britain. Washburn is determined to carve out a path for Maine that would see both sides satisfied.

Do you want a Custom Character? If so what’s their name and background? (Can only start in low level positions of power): Major Richard Vourne. Born to working class parents from Sheffield, England, Vourne, a hardened professional soldier, a learned stoic and an utter workhorse all rolled into one, is coming to prominence in the newly independent state. His energy and intelligence has lead to him, whatever his official rank, being a voice for a new Maine state army. But many of his ideas take inspiration suspiciously northward, toward Canada.

Desired State; Iowa.

History of said State’s history, leadership, and government;

History

Iowa truly began its explosion when claims by the Indians were ousted in 1812 by the war named after that year. From that many Euro-Americans settled and with the invention of the steel plow Iowa was able to increase its immigration until finally it gained statehood in 1846.

In the ‘50s Iowa began its turn towards Republicans rather than Democrats – after all it promoted a lot of what Iowans needed. Rails, land ownership, and banking all were required for these eager Iowans who wanted to make something of themselves. War was coming and Iowa was unsure of picking sides; sure they had a railroad running through their land but grain was still a major export for Iowans.

Not only that but with the chance of Northern states defecting to the Empire once-more it became apparent that Iowa has a vital choice to make. They had to choose a side or get left in the dust...

Desired State; The Republic of Louisiana

History of said State’s history, leadership, and government; Louisiana was a slave state and southern throughout and through. The state was predominantly agricultural, and the entire state economy relied on slave labor to function and to run the many farms planted on the rich fertile soil. Naturally, as a result of these phenomenons, the state Louisiana had overwhelmingly voted for Southern candidate Breckenridge. And naturally once more, when Lincoln, a man who contradicted nearly all views and philosophies which the average white Southerner held dear was elected to office the entire state was in flames. It could not stand, and neither could the Union.

Following the deep southern slave states, and the rest of the United States, a declaration of secession was formulated, and secession was announced in the capitol of Baton Rogue. This was met with songs of joy in most of Louisiana, from the Bayou to the Gulf coast, except in arguably the most important place of all, New Orleans. New Orleans had received an influx of North men drawn to the prosperous port city, and was one of the largest cities in all of America. New Orleans, contrasting from the rest of Louisiana, had remained Unionist as a result of this. The city of New Orleans itself succeeded from the state of Louisiana, and declared its alliegiance to the Union, even going so far as to elect a northern governor. They had seemingly been forming barricades and laying various ragtag defenses along the roads into the city. To the state government, the city of New Orleans had been preparing for battle. And judging by the events unfolding in Baton Rogue, they were going to receive one. In Baton Rogue, a mob had been brewing. A mob that was  furious that New Orleans, rightful Southern lands in their eyes, had been infiltrated by the Northern enemy, and separated from its rightful owners. They were determined to retake the city. After a couple months of slowly drawing men in from the country side, the mob had swelled to up to 10,000 irregulars, armed with their own rifles, and some men even armed with simple swords, however these limitations was not going to slow down the mob. All these men had it engrained in their heads that their state, their home, will not lay weak and divided because of foreigners.

And so, with the state government supporting, The Thugs of Baton Rogue, with the famous Louisiana Tigers, marched onward to New Orleans. The march was a long one, but one that would go down in folk legend. Along the way it has become song that the waters of the Mississippi vibrated with the chants of the Thugs on their way to save the city of New Orleans from the sin of the Northerners. After a month of marching, they reached the outskirts of New Orleans, and gained thousands of Southern Irregulars from the city itself. Now the thugs had swelled up to 25,000 unorganized irregulars, made up of men, slaves forced to fight by their owners, and sometimes even young boys. The Mob, on a Sunday that will forever be remembered in Louisiana history as Bloody Sunday began its attack. The city of New Orleans was under siege, and while they had built defenses, the Thugs of Baton Rogue overpowered the defenders by too large of a margin. The defenders of the city, had been made up of roughly an even split of volunteers and the garrison from nearby forts gaurding the mouth of the Mississippi. The city held for one day and one night, before being overcome by the mob, and chaos ensued.

The cities black population was either raped, killed, or forced back into slavery. All of the cities defenders that they could find were slaughtered, and the Governor was lychned in a humiliating ceremony. After the blood ended, the Mob began to break into Northern businesses, before order was established by the commander of the Louisiana Tigers, a renowned corps of which most were from New Orleans. Colonel Wheat quickly assumed control of New Orleans, and prevented widespread pillaging and looting from continuing, however conceded to the Thugs the black population. Semmes, the President of Louisiana, wrote the following after news arrived of the events that transpired on Bloody Sunday had arrived on his desk; “Had it not been for the actions of Colonel Wheat, the Thugs would have ruined New Orleans as Odoacer did to Rome.”

The State government quickly established control over the city and the state shortly after, formulating a basic state constitution that outlines how the Government of Louisiana should function. The Constitution had been written by the elite of the state, which had come to be wealthy white land and slave owners, the group which formed the economic high class of the Deep South, and which had been responsible for the creation of many of the great southern slave states, including beautiful Louisiana.

Nominal Leader/President/Governor/etc.;  Thomas Jenkins Semmes

Desired State; Connecticut

History of said State’s history, leadership, and government; What is now Connecticut initially began as several disunified colonies along the Long Island Sound. Still meager in size, the state is often overlooked by their neighbors in New York and Massachusetts. However, the State has played a significant role in American history; giving rise to individuals such as Nathan Hale, Eli Whitney, and Mark Twain, and J.P. Morgan, as well as hosting the prestigious Yale University. And it is because of Connecticuters that the Connecticut Compromise was proposed, allowing for America’s bicameral legislature. In part due to Eli Whitney and the Industrial Revolution, Connecticut has become home to significant manufacturing plants, a booming textile industry, and expansive railroad infrastructure. With the collapse of the American government, the state is left in a precarious situation. Will they hold strong, or will they become the battleground of their feuding neighbors? Many look to the guidance of the governor, William Alfred Buckingham, who has quickly set about militarizing his state.

Desired State; Arkansas

History of said State’s history, leadership, and government; Ruled over by the Quapaw indian tribe for years and years, the spanish explorer Hernando de Soto, in 1541, found these tribes and the Arkansas river, and climbed the Ozark mountains. Founding resistance from the Indians and nothing of value, de Soto and his men retreated to the Mississipi river, where he fell ill. In his deathbed, Hernando ordered for the massacre of the Quapaw people in the village of Anilco, and a year later, in 1542, he died. Soto’s men tried an on-land return to Mexico, and where eventually backtracked and returned to Arkansas. They built a fleet off the trees in the region, nothing more than two or three boats, and returned to the Mississipi river and down to Mexico. Later, Henri de Tonti and Robert La Salle in 1681 founded the Arkansas post and the region was only truly organized in 1819 as the Territory of Arkansaw and admitted as a US state in 1836 as simply ‘Arkansas’.

Nominal Leader/President/Governor/etc.; Governor Henry Massey Rector.

Do you want a Custom Character? If so what’s their name and background? (Can only start in low level positions of power); Orval Kidd, hardened wildlands explorer and soldier, became police officer in the city of Little Rock when he became thirty years of age. Proud patriot of his state, he’s said he’d murder any men under the flag of Arkansas, and so he plans to do, rising through the ranks of the police force, eventually into the military.

Desired State; Minnesota

History of said State’s history, leadership, and government;

Minnesota’s first European contact began with the French fur trades who encounters many tribes such as the Sioux and the Ojibwe. Later, the Minnesota territory became part of the greater Louisiana territory until said territory was bought by the United States. After the Louisiana Purchase, the North West Company established Fort Charlotte on Lake Superior this led to a growing attraction of settlers to the Minnesota Territory, most of them from New England. These migrants came for the lumber work and to establish farming homesteads. Near Fort Snelling a group of lumber workers, squatters, farmers and government officials settled, when the army forced them away they moved down river, establishing St. Paul.

Relations between the natives and the European settlers aren’t good. The current Governor, turned president, Alexander Ramsey  is known to have said: "The Sioux Indians of Minnesota must be exterminated or driven forever beyond the borders of the state." While he supported the potential presidency of Lincoln and the potential freedom of the Blacks he saw the natives as little else than pests.

Minnesota’s economy is primarily dependent on lumber, having numerous sawmills in its river systems. Agriculture, especially of grains, also makes a rather large percentage of the State’s production.

Nominal Leader/President/Governor/etc.;

Alexander Ramsey is the President of the Minnesota Whigs. Anti-slavery but also anti-native American, President Ramsey wishes to expand Minnesota’s economy, especially by acquiring more land from the now federal-less territories in the west.

The Legislature is overwhelmingly made up of representatives from the Minnesotan Whig Party, a federalist party with agrarian leanings. Heavily anti-native with some anti-catholic leanings as well, they view that the only way that Minnesota can thrive is through its natural resources. The only opposition the party has are from some independents from St Paul, but even then they mostly vote in favor of Whig policies.

Do you want a Custom Character? If so what’s their name and background? (Can only start in low level positions of power); Frederik Steinback, 24, a migrant of Scandinavian origin. After his father’s passing in Norway, Steinback used his inheritance to buy a sawmill near St Paul. A hardworking man, poised to make a great fortune.

Desired State; Illinois

History of said State’s history, leadership, and government;

Illinois began as one of the early frontier territories of the United States with the construction of Fort Dearborn in 1803. By 1809 Illinois was incorporated into the U.S as a territory and officially joined as the 21st state in 1819. Southern Illinois was settled first, but a gradual push northward followed soon after.

Though slavery was deemed illegal in Illinois due to the Northwest Ordinance, laws against slavery were not strictly enforced and the ordinance became null and void upon Illinois’ ascension to statehood. Southern migrants flooded into the south of Illinois, but their attempts to make slavery official were all blocked. By 1860 the majority of the state’s population opposed slavery, but it was by no means a bastion of civil equality. Slavery was declared illegal in the Illinois Constitution of 1848, but it upheld some of the strictest Black Codes.

Because of Chicago’s strategic location it grew to become a vital port city and economic center for Illinois. The Illinois and Michigan canal allowed shipping from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River and Gulf of Mexico, and by 1850s over 30 rail lines passed through the city. Industry also grew in the Chicago, making it Illinois’ most vital city by far by the 1850s.

Nominal Leader/President/Governor/etc.;

John Wood currently sits as the governor of Illinois, but given the current Federal President, and the other notable Illinoisians with Federal ties, there is a large amount of Pro-Federal support around the north and east of the state.

Do you want a Custom Character? If so what’s their name and background? (Can only start in low level positions of power);

Jack Stevenson – a leader of one of the few radical Pro-Slavery militias in Southern Illinois.
