Alexander sit in his study, writing a letter back to his parent.

Dearest, Parents

I’ve been promoted to Colonel of 1st Massachusetts Artillery regiment under Major Charles L. Peirson. It seems General Hooker has taken a liking to me and saw that I was given a position to suit my talents. I’ve poured my time into studying the art of war, and Napoleon's tactics used in his conquest of Europe. I hope to live up to the General expectations of me.

I’m going to be stationed in boston for the time being, until the forts are constructed. I’ll be sure to  visit Uncle Henry when I get the chance as well. And mother, I think you would be happy to hear I’ve met a girl, her name is Sophia and works at the local hospital as a nurse. I’ve even started to court her in my off time, and I hope you both get to meet her.

I miss you both dearly, but I know I’m making you proud.

Your Son,

Alexander

THE DOMINION OF MAINE RESPONDS:

’President Banks,

There is no reason to take such a militant stance toward our Dominion. We voluntarily embarked upon this path. Britain did not seek influence in Maine, rather, we approached them. Britain has not enforced Dominion on us, nor the Pound Sterling on Virginia. In fact, it was partly by our recommendation that Virginia took the currency. We have nothing to be released from. In fact, the British have been a great help, and, with a clear conscience, I declare that we will not waver in our actions. We will not voluntarily surrender to you, nor will we abandon those commitments we have made by any declaration.

The Athenians said to the Melians: ‘The strong do what they can, the weak suffer what they must,’ as Thucydides put it. But we are not weak, and embarked upon this path for our benefit.

There is no reason why peace and goodwill should be impossible. We desire only peace and the Christianlike accord of nations, to which effect we have raised no standing army, but have put that money to education, in order that the free spirit of men be released, and the nobler part of Man embraced. We are no threat to any independent US State and nor is the United Kingdom.

We hope to see you reconsider your actions, and am quite willing to see your concerns resolved diplomatically,

THE PRIME MINISTER.’

The State of Illinois

rlWUOs3VsETwssZPhrlV1zuJWwz1rlgLUn8slPUPDyDI5qGjJgAe0cNH4yBrCLqv6t6gHdo0D_SUqnM854E_01pOqR-R0DBdVFbuApzdSRa11go53xoG-CVqNWh4FunZkZ-raZM7

The State of Illinois was not even a year into its conception, but already the groundwork for this new nation was being established. A military was being made, the economy was in the process of revival, and a more stable currency had been established. Now less pressing, but as important, matters could be addressed. Governor Wood has much on his plate, but with the necessary political and economic systems in place he is able to turn his attention to the future of Illinois.

Military

Governor Wood, extremely impressed with the progress made by Maj. General Schofield, has ordered for the creation of another four-regiment brigade. This brigade will be put under the command of Brigadier-General Stephen A. Hurlbut, and will mostly be comprised of the federal soldiers who chose to join the Army of Illinois, and any volunteers who still wish to offer their services to their state and country. There is no pressing need to fill all four regiments at the moment, so the goal is for the 5th Illinois Infantry to be up to half-strength by the New Year.

The somewhat-disorganized military is beginning to undergo training to shape these volunteers into proper soldiers. Former federal officers are given their old positions, though they are usually promoted, and militia leaders who have joined the army are training to become officers in their own right. There won’t always be a pool of former federal officers, however, so to address any problems that may arise in the future Governor Wood has called for the establishment of an Officer Training School in Peoria.

Economy

Talks of creating a navy have been postponed as more concerning issues have been brought forth. The military, short on uniforms, has requested for assistance in this regard. Production of uniforms for the new military of Illinois is encouraged. Production of weaponry and railroad continues as usual.

Because of the recent recruitment drive there are worries of manpower shortages in both the agricultural and industrial sectors, where the subsidies have not been as effective as intended. To address this, the Congress of Illinois has struck down many of the Black Codes of Illinois. Black Codes regarding the return of fugitive slaves, the requirement for immigrating blacks to show proof of their freedom, and any laws restricting blacks from working in the industrial and agricultural sectors have been nullified. Factories for the purpose of employing these runaway slaves are being constructed, as are several farms in the heart of Illinois. Runaway slaves, especially those from Missouri, are encouraged to find employment in these places.

Noticing the rise of the American Dollar to the east, talks of abandoning the newly-created Illinois Dollar for this more-popular currency have begun.

Foreign Relations

A deal has been brokered with Iowa, granting the state access to its railroad networks. Free trade between the two is also encouraged. The diplomats sent to the know federal outposts find them mostly abandoned, and let the army know of this. The diplomat sent to D.C has begun talks with the federal government there, but there is no word of an agreement reached just yet.

Diplomats have been sent to Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan, presumably to establish free trade agreements with the three. Two more diplomats are being sent, this time to Louisiana-Mississippi and Arkansas. Though the state has trade routes through its abundant rail lines and the Great Lakes, another opening via the Mississippi River is desired. The diplomats hope to strike a deal with these southern states to allow use of the Mississippi.

Summary

  • One new brigade is being created and placed under the command of Brigadier-General Stephen A. Hurlbut. [Mod]

  • A free trade agreement is reached with Iowa. Diplomats are being sent to make similar deals with Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan. [Mod]

  • An Officer Training School is built in Peoria. [Mod]

  • Production of uniforms for the army is encouraged. [Mod]

  • Factories and farms are being made for blacks and runaway slaves. Slaves from Missouri are heavily encouraged to escape their plantations and come to these places of employment. Any Black Codes that would specifically impede this process are repealed. [Mod]

  • Diplomats are sent to Arkansas and Louisiana-Mississippi respectively, hoping to reach an agreement to allow the use of the Mississippi River. [Mod]

  • The Army of Illinois begins extensive training. Two brigades are sent west, presumably to guard the Mississippi River. Two regiments from the 4th Illinois Infantry Brigade cross the Mississippi River to Kaskaskia, where they are ordered to construct a fort. The other two regiments of the 4th Illinois are sent to Kinder (Granite City). One regiment fortifies Mosenthein and Gabaret Islands, the other fortifies Chouteau Island. [Mod]

The State of New York

The Rise of the Empire

Following the collapse of the Union and the secession of New York, Governor Edwin D. Morgan was said to have smiled upon hearing of the collapse of the Washington Government. In the days to come, it would be clear those tears showed no remorse for the end of the Union and quickly worked on his own plans for the State’s future. A deadline for six months would be set on the formation of the new government, while the existing state government maintained control until then. The next months would be a chaotic, yet calculated scramble for the resources of the state.

In New York City, the Governor gave absolute control over the city during the crisis to a singular man, John Jacob Astor III, overtaking the existing Mayor, Fernando Wood. The businessman would be expected to run the city while the government in Albany wrote the new Constitution for the state, but he had other objectives. Astor would enlist the aid of Cornelius Vanderbilt in blocking off the New York Harbor by quickly amassing his ferry fleet and loading armed men aboard, as well as sending any US Naval ships which could be commandeered. Only ships controlled by New York, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Louisiana, or Ohio would be allowed to leave for the time being. The militia would also be sent to seize the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Meanwhile, any assets controlled by states who did not use the currency of the Union; which most of the Eastern Trade Pact intended to keep using and would be backed by the New York banks until a formal agreement would be made, would be temporarily frozen until proper exchange rates could be determined. The upcoming financier, J.P. Morgan would be requested to enlist the aid of his father who operated out of London in determining the value of the American Dollar to the Pound, as well as the New England Dollar.

Interstate Trade

Any state which wished to continue interstate trade as it was would be invited to with New York, who hoped to ensure that trade would continue as it was. Despite this, New York City refuses to trade directly with Maine any longer, and instead ships it’s goods to Canada or Britain. Import tariffs would be raised significantly on goods shipped in from any non-former state or Maine.

The New York Army

In order to ensure the peaceful transition of power in New York City, the existing militia had been sent to aid in Astor’s transition of power from the Union to the State. West Point would be seized quickly as well, where the formation of the first New York Armies would begin. Governor Morgan to enlist at least 75,000 volunteers during the first months. The army would study the tactics the United States army used by going through documents at west point, and would also look largely into those used by the United States Army during the War of 1812 and what they had developed in the years since.

Federal forts in the state would be besieged by a portion of the militia and the new recruits and would be given the option to leave their arms and return home without any harm being done to them. The Union was dead, there was no reason for soldiers to die for a cause which had fallen.

New Jersey

The state of New Jersey would be offered to be peacefully annexed by the State of New York, where it would have representation in the new government upon its formation at the end of the year. They hoped to ensure the business relationship between the state could continue safely, and that the region would not fall prey to European states looking to expand their influence. Should New Jersey decline, their funds would be frozen and goods from the northern ports would not be allowed to flow out of the New York Port.

ACTIONS

The State Government of New York would take temporary control of the state until a new Constitution could be written, which had a deadline of six months after the date of secession according to Governor Morgan.

John Jacob Astor would be given control of New York, and would temporarily close the harbor. For more detail please see the second paragraph in The New York Empire.

J.P. Morgan would be put in charge of determining an exchange rate between the American Dollar, the Pound, and the New England Dollar. Federal assets controlled by New York banks would also be seized. For more detail please read the third paragraph in The New York Empire.

While free trade would continue with former members of the Union, tariffs would be raised significantly on good from non-American countries and Maine.

An army of 75,000 volunteers would be called for by the government in Albany and would be based out of West Point where government tactics would be analyzed. The tactics of the War of 1812 would be strongly considered as well as more recently developed tactics.

Federal forts would be besieged by portions of the militia and the new volunteers. Once all forts are vacated. Most volunteers would be put sent to training first.

New Jersey is offered a peaceful annexation into New York and full representation in the New York State government upon its formation, as well as a say in its creation.

ADRESSING THE REBELLION IN NORTHERN MISSISSIPI

Mr Henry Rector sat in the presidential room, in the town hall of Little Rock, surrounded by military advisors of the Arkansaw Army, the General, Thomas J. Churchill, Colonel John H. Kelly, Brigadier Nicholas B. Pierce and Military Advisor, ex-Brigadier General James McIntosh. “Gentlemen… Word has reached me that our brothers in Louisiana have arranged a deal with the Mississippi and the northern part of the latter didn’t accept such that well… As per usual, it is the north that disgraces everything. So. Proposed moves?”

Mr Thomas J. stood, presenting forwards a map of the Mississippi…

“Our troops will have hell if we are caught in between the Pine and North Central hills. The Yazoo Basin is close to our border, and I suggest an approach from there. I don’t know about the other’s opinions…”

The military advisor nodded, Mr McIntosh curled the map back up and settled it aside. The men then all looked to President Rector, whom gave the nod…

DECLARATION OF WAR

THE REPUBLIC OF ARKANSAS FORMALLY DECLARES IT’S FULL SUPPORT TO THE REPUBLIC OF LOUISIANA AND FORMALLY DECLARES WAR ON THE NORTHERN REBELS OF THE MISSISSIPPI. Governor: Andrew Curtin

Population: 3,027,463

Internal reforms

Curtin sits in his office, sighing as he begins flipping through the mound of paperwork on his desk. He’s had months and months of nothing but this and meetings, and debating with members of the Government. So in the dead of night Curtin decided he'd break from work and walked the streets of Philly till the early hours of the morning when he started getting tired. The city started coming to life with the galloping of horses and the horse carriages clomping against the brick streets. One thing Curtin enjoyed was how many citizens would always greet each other with good mornings and kind gestures while passing on the streets. In his daily life as a politician he never saw that sort of thing amongst the snakes in power, everyone was a cut throat. And only interested in money.

As Curtin made his way back to his office there was a light downpour which pelted each brick in the street with small droplets of water. And covered everything in the open. “What a beautiful morning” he thought to himself as he walked up the steps and into the building which housed his office. As he entered you could hear his desk clerk yell out about a series of meetings he had for the day, and that he still hasn't finished his paperwork from yesterday.

It is decided that the Commonwealth will use the American Dollar along with New York. Construction of a set of factories throughout the country continue. Next on the list for the Government is to create a national bank for the state, build hospitals, and give funding to create more schools and university to better improve literacy rates and give an education to more youth across the country. Also tariffs are raised on england.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania joins the The Eastern Trade Pact along with Virginia, New York, and Ohio.

Another source of income in Pennsylvania is Alcohol, there are a large number of breweries in PA, but the country wants to increase the amount of them so that more money can be made, so to encourage this the price for a brewing license is lowered substantially in hopes of more Breweries like Fuhrmann & Schmidt’s Eagle Run Brewery, Graupner’s, George C. Baer and Charles Stegmaier, and Hanover Brewing Co. to name a few. Though regulations and a newly created Food and Drug Administration inspects the businesses and the products they offer to make sure they are safe for human consumption.

Military actions

An additional 32k recruits are requested. Around 5-6k of which is needed for the Navy Construction on a series of Naval ships begins. A second model of the USS Pennsylvania along with 3 Brigs and a Frigate. Construction begins in haste.

Army wise things are going great, uniforms, ammunition, firearms, and cannons, and canned food supplies are being churned out as quickly as possible to meet the demand for the ever increasing size of the army. And this is all with just the existing factories and the three new Arsenals. The Government sets up a horse breeding program with the best horse breeders in the state to start being able to replace horses lost inevitably in battle. The army also offers to buy horses off from Pennsylvanian citizens as the demand for good horses is only increasing by the day.

A special request for Spencer Carbine rifles, ammunition and Blakeslee cartridge boxes and cannons/ cannon balls is sent to the government via the Army. They request as many of the aforementioned items as possible, so with a stockpile of raw materials coming being mined and being shipped in from almost every neighboring country, So at Allegheny Arsenal production of these items is started in hopes to put the large surplus of materials to use making the goods for much cheaper.

Since the first 45k men have finished basic training the army decided it should implement medals you can earn, mostly they’re the same as the ones from the union army, but a new one is the Franklin Medal. Which you get if you show outstanding qualities and go above and beyond in the line of duty and show bravery.

Small amounts of supplies and men are being shipped to the entire length of the Pennsylvania- Delaware border, where they have begun setting up camp. More men and supplies are shipped in daily. All 45k soldiers are to be shipped to the border by the end of the year and await orders while more men are being trained and also sent to the front after their training.

_____________________________________________________________

Foreign policy

A letter is sent to Delaware offering annexation into PA. They would get full representation in Pennsylvania government, PA investment into their industry and land, and unrestricted trade between each other.

In better news Arkansas and Pennsylvania have struck a deal for a trade agreement, Arkansas will send Lead, Iron, and Steel, and rice. And in exchange for those goods Pennsylvania will create Spencer Carbines and ammunition and sell those to Arkansas at a much cheaper rate.

___________________________________________________________________

Actions

  • 45k men are garrisoned on the border with Delaware and await orders

  • Building of a series of factories around Pennsylvania for an upcoming project finished.[mod]

THE UNION OF CONCORD

ywT8ZAyvac4U1__V49dNGao7GyApFhDS904SwAd62NYRCKaGaTNFaftNa9uEkSdAs9J7IZc-quEBXGIb16Jir5Ov51AWEiUQ8U4Cbsp0NoIwndKfH5K0EpInLmQ5CYlKdqPbeOif

The Lord’s Year of 1861.

Ichabod Goodwin sat solemnly in his chair. He stared out the window, into the the landscape surrounding the city of Concord. It was a new dawn, a new opportunity. The first state to set up their own government in 1776 now stood alone again, a good 85 years after. The Union had fallen, died like the decrepit nation it was.

He knew that New Hampshire was not strong on its own. He knew that he they would have to make friends, make allies, make partners. But this could not be done until internal policies were sorted out. It was only an hour or so until he would meet with the newly formed Assembly of State Affairs to discuss their newfound independence.

The state would need to first and foremost develop itself before it could see much play on the new international stage of America. But it would eventually have to play its part.

CONCORD REFORM ACT OF 1861

The State of New Hampshire, to further its severing of ties with both the fallen United States of America and the decrepit British Empire, will henceforth be known as the Union of Concord.

THE EXECUTIVE POWERS ACT OF 1861

The Governor, henceforth known as the President of the Union of Concord, will be the sole executive power of the Union of Concord. Ichabod Goodwin will assume the position of President-Regent until the next election.

THE LEGISLATIVE POWERS ACT OF 1861

The Assembly of the Union is established. It will seat four hundred representatives of the Union of Concord and is the sole legislative power of the Union of Concord. All members of the Assembly of State Affairs will become part of the Assembly of the Union until the next election.

THE ELECTION REFORM OF 1861

The Office of President of the Union of Concord will be elected every sixth year. The next election for the President of Union of Concord will be held in 1862.

The Representatives of the Assembly of the Union will be elected every third year. The next election for the Representatives of the Assembly of the Union will be held in 1862

MILITARY REFORM ACT OF 1861

All state militias are hereby called to join the Army of the Union of Concord. Officers and leaders of these militias are invited to become take higher positions and become officers in the Army of the Union of Concord. The army is currently a volunteer force, but the act allows for expansion of the army through conscription.

NAVAL REFORM ACT OF 1861

All ships stationed in Portsmouth are hereby seized by the Union of Concord and will create the Navy of the Union of Concord. The ships, two sloops of war, are hereby renamed from the USS Marion and the USS Dale, to the UCS Concord and the UCS Ichabod. The act also calls for the construction of a single Ship of the Line in Portsmouth.

FARMS RELIEF AND SUBSIDIES ACT OF 1861

Acknowledging the possibility of famine in many of the newly formed states. The Government of the Union of Concord will send subsidies to farmers throughout the country, as well as offering pieces of land to families willing to farm it.

THE CURRENCY ACT OF 1861

The Union of Concord adopts the currency of neighbouring states Massachusetts and Connecticut. Concord also establishes a national bank.

  • The Union of Concord is declared, cutting all ties with the United States of America. (Mod)

  • Delegates are sent to the Commonwealth Massachusetts and the Federation of Connecticut. (Players)

  • A delegate is sent to the State of Vermont, realising the situation of the two neighbouring states, and thus formally inviting them to join the Union of Concord. (Mod)

  • President-Regent Ichabod Goodwin commissions a Ship of the Line to be constructed in Portsmouth. (Mod)

Commonwealth of Virginia

Jeb Stuart and Fitzhugh Lee heeled their horses hard, making them rear. The two gain controls of their mounts, and pause. They take out field glasses from their kits, and survey the land. They had ridden long and hard to get here, at the head of five hundred good Virginian cavalrymen. Under Robert Lee’s strict orders to not engage, they scouted the Union troops. Governor Letcher was trying to appease the Union in Washington. They had made a deal, and the honor of Virginia was at stake. Those Yankees were under Virginia’s oath of safe passage to D.C. So even while they burned Virginia, she had kept her honor and let them continue.

I) However with the troops now in D.C, the terms of safe passage were now over. But Letcher and Lee were statesmen, and had been Union. Virginian honor is worth more than Virginian glory. However they could not let this matter rest. Letcher, Farragut, Hunter, Bowden, and other notable politicians convened. In the new government of the Commonwealth, power lay with the Elite. Across the state wealthy land and slave owning white males were in control of the local level. The state’s higher body was more flexible though. Free black’s are allowed the vote, and option to buy family member’s that are still in slavery [only if the owner consents, and may set the price.] Yeoman farmer’s and West Virginians may also vote/send electives. But Letcher, and the most rich/powerful land owners controlled the Governorship and cabinet.

II) The Commonwealth took pride in it’s heritage, but also flexibility. She would bend with the collapse of the Union, and remain strong. The government agreed the Union federalist and army in Washington D.C must pay. They do not demand the price of blood though. Instead a formal draft [quite like the declaration of independence sent to King George] is sent to Lincoln. Virginia, on behalf of Robert E. Lee, a massively respected man in the Union, ask for help. They want the Union to pay, or compensate, for the large damage to Harper’s Ferry, and West Virginia, alongside reparations and an official apology.

1*8JeDjhzL-0j8y11QVkmoog.png

III) In Virginia itself the impact is felt much harder. The Union had razed a West Virginian city, Harper’s Ferry very well could of supported the Union. But now it seemed that was at an end. Jeb Stuart and Fitzhugh Lee begin to tour the Appalachian folks abode. Their five hundred horse, and a further three thousand foot under Brigadier General William Hays arrive to help. They symbolically put bayonets on their rifles, and stick them stock up in the dirt. They then are equipped shovels and picks, and begin to help rebuild Harper’s Ferry.

IV) Fitzhugh Lee begins to meet with the newly elected West Virginian officials. They were allowed their own body and militia. On the more political side Lee and Virginian newspapers tell the accurate tale of the razing of Harper’s Ferry. The newspapers of Virginia proper are censored, to tell the truth. They did not want radicals inflating the numbers or destruction. They use the Union raid though as a moral point to justify a continued united Virginia, alongside the increasing rights for West Virginians and non whites.

V) On the more military side Jeb Stuart and a dozen officers meet with West Virginian militias. With Virginia’s state body approving, they would begin to raise ten thousand men for the Army of Virginia. The West Virginians added a “conscience” rider, which was approved. It detailed any man not wanting to serve who lives in West Virginia would not be obligated to do so. Those Jeb does recruit he takes back to Robert Lee and the growing Army.

War-Council-B.jpg

VI) In Virginia proper the land owning elite are outraged at the damage of north Virginian property. Out of their own pockets the richer Virginians who supported the Union deal are made to pay for the damage. But it united them more in their resolution. The Union was still the enemy, the election of Lincoln and the consequent events had proven that. The 1st Virginian Corps is dispatched to the razed land. They will maintain order, and help rebuild. The border will be lightly manned, to ensure no Union sorties damage more land. The 2nd and 3rd Corp remain training in Virginia. This was the official 1st Army of Virginia, and nicknamed the “Army of Northern Virginia” after the recent events.

The 2nd Army of Virginia is formed. Entirely out of West Virginian and North Virginian volunteers. For now the “Army” will only have the 4th Corp comprising twenty six thousand men. Major General George Henry Thomas will assume command of the new army. Colonel John Mosby is promoted to Brigadier General and put in direct command of the 4th Corp. They begin assembling at Harper’s Ferry to train, and assist in repairs.

VII) In other news Farragut continues a slow accumulation policy for his desired two million pound. The wealth of Virginia, Northern loans, and British loans will be the backbone. However he runs fundraisers, and other projects to get wealth from the landowners. He reveals the ultimate project. To build a ship of iron! The details are told to enthrall Virginians of their new potential super weapon. The Engineers hired months ago are put together to begin designs.

VIII) Virginian mines and railroads are the major employers. The government seeks to bind the Commonwealth closer, and have proper infrastructure. Trade with Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York also continues. Raw resources are exported from Virginia. Textiles, manufactured goods, and guns/canons come back down. Virginian industry is also receiving attention from her government, and NY investors.

The State of New York

The Constitution of New York

The State of New York would reform its government upon the signing of a new Constitution. The entirety of the United States bill of rights would be carried over into the new one, as the state still relied heavily on the belief in democracy and free capitalist trade. Amongst this through, was the addition of the abolition of slavery throughout the state. The state would transition much of its existing government into the new one but would elevate many of the positions. The Governorship would now become the Presidency, with Edwin D. Morgan becoming the Acting President until the first state elections could be held in November of 1862. With news of these new elections, Cornelius Vanderbilt would quickly become a rising star in the Republican Party for a nomination for Governor as the man who was considered paramount in the seizing of property for the state following the dissolution of the Union.

The Act of 1861

Released to the public shortly after its formation, the Act of 1861 would give the command for the New York Central Railway to be granted funds in order to begin building new railways throughout New York and in order to buy up stocks in companies of other states. Pennsylvanian and Massachusetts railways would be the primary goal of the New York Central Line, but as an independent company, it was given the liberty to build the rails as necessary. A primary point made when attempting to buy the rails from their own companies would be the need and promise for a Trans-Continent Railway through the northern states. Funds acquired from the federal government’s holdings would be used in part to fund this expansion.

The New York Military

Following the denial of New Jersey’s annexation by the Commonwealth of New York, the Army would be ordered to once again attempt to recruit more men, hoping to secure an additional 75,000 soldiers. Recruiters throughout the state would call for New Yorkers to defend their independence and economy by joining the Army, and many within the Army seemed to begin to consider New Jersey’s independence as a threat to the security of the state.

The New York Navy would be formed and based out of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. It is ordered to take inventory of ships confiscated from other states and the former United States government. The new navy would be tasked with releasing ships owned by states who were on trading terms with New York, including ships owned by Virginia, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Ohio. Ships owned by other states would be either commandeered by the New York Navy or sold to businessmen from the state.

New Jersey

The State of New York would declare war on New Jersey, citing their need to protect their holdings and trade interests within the state. New Yorkers would be called upon to enlist and aid in this necessary act, which ultimately would ensure New York’s security against the rising power of the southern states and England within the former United States of America. President Morgan still hoped for a peaceful resolution to the matter but has made it clear that he would not accept no as an answer to his request for the annexation of New Jersey.

ACTIONS

The New York Constitution transitions the existing state government into a new one, with Governor Edwin D. Morgan becoming Acting President until an official one can be elected in November of 1962. Cornelius Vanderbilt quickly becomes a major candidate for the Republican Party as President Morgan insists he does not intend to run for reelection.

The Act of 1961 is passed granting the New York Central Line funds to not only expand their railways within New York but in other states as well through both the building of new lines and the purchasing of existing lines and companies within the Eastern Trade Pact. Funds formerly owned by the federal government are granted to the company for such an operation, and Cornelius Vanderbilt quickly becomes one of the men working alongside the existing owner of the company to help facilitate these deals.

The New York Army would call for another 75,000 volunteers to secure New Jersey and New York from potential threats.

The New York Navy would be based out of the Brooklyn Navy Yard and would immediately begin the construction of new ships. They would also be tasked with releasing ships owned by Virginia, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Ohio. Ships owned by other states would be either commandeered by the New York Navy or sold to businessmen from the state.

New York would declare war on New Jersey in order to secure her borders and economic interests. The Acting President would hope for a peaceful resolution to this but would accept nothing less than a merging of the two states.

Shipments of cannons would be sent to Louisana to be sold.

CONFEDERACY OF SOUTHERN STATES

Pc1uvtP_9vf61YjVml9U1vuxequpx1scfLWjOddQpsaVCpyrEj4xnfyS3qhBVXYOxnuaaEkuYxKgKE18fLVNtir3qwkKcekb2wnAVD3Losc3-DiTyCCTDpvMQpVWGjRCFFgjUSbM

Snow fell upon the vivid green grass, the spacious meadow in front of the protruding fort being a stained white canvas with spots of an earthy green and brown scattered throughout. The fortress stood tall and supreme, however its sworn defenders stood weak and frail, many recognizing and making dark assumptions regarding their fate. The men under the orders of the official in command are to be ready at all times. Men peer over the walls to the unknown, where they are constantly canvassing for their enemy. The darkness of night is not the defenders advantage, thought Colonel John B Magnolia, the last Federalist leader of the fortress. These men, these passionate men who find themselves fighting-and giving their lives for a lost cause witnessed the atrocities committed to their compatriots across the sound. Death, even after surrender, was the sentence. To many, this empowered them, gave rise to a baptismal flame inside their souls to protect this bastion of unity and truth against the hordes of southern traitors and liars. To others, the simple thought of their fate spawned dark thoughts in their heads, of premeditated defeat and death. Whatever their fate, it would be decided by the bloody sword.

On the other side of the sea wall lay a completely different realm, with a completely different nation with a completely different mentality. Thousands of soldiers lay in the dark, on their backs in the thicket to avoid detection by the Unionists in their fort. They are fighting for their state, for their Southern values and traditions. A bearded ginger peered over the wall, eying the brick defenses. He returned to his previous position, resting his back against the wall. Rifle in hand, he gently placed a kiss on its barrel. “May yer shot forever be troo” he said quietly. He eyed the black outlines of the artillery several hundred yards away, the deep black abyss of their barrels pointing to the fort. He looked towards his left, and he could make out the jolly uniform of the famous Louisiana Tigers, many of them sleeping on the soft swamp grass. He gazed across marshland and placid bayou waters, across protruding cypress butts and half submerged ferns to the white tent of the General, which had a dim light casting upon the tarp. He looked back up to the snowy sky, up to the moon. He could see it, a full moon radiating the dark night sky. Its yellow tinge and gray stains creating a beautiful image for the world to see. The soldier thought to himself, What would the moon think of what we were doing here? Would it sanction the fight in the name of honour, and glory to our state? Or would it rebuke us, cursing us for fighting such petty squabbles. A dark cloud quickly moved in front of its bright radiance, and the soldiers thoughts were interrupted by the music of a large artillery barrage. The battle had begun.

DNIXyPWOEYASM8bAwBrWCk4YbZw7sZiKEAGw9nnIvBnhL5MUvfVVdRvUb0GsBexbc8TtzWKSoqtaCXfkLw1iHKFMZ3Ga6lF5a7NAxh1T5HFNCjYRkkJOZ1F-uPE9o1aig-ZRhEhB

Away from the gruesome events occuring in the bayou there was a different type of battle occuring. At Vicksburg, the capitol of the newly established confederacy, a fierce but bloodless battle of the words was raging on between fellow countrymen. “We must wage war against the unhonourable traitors! The legislature of the former Mississippi voted, and if they do not accept the result, then we must force them too!” Stated Jonathan B Petteridge, the elected representative of Gulfport. We must! We must help our countrymen across the river regain lands which rightfully belong to the union! At all costs!” championed New Orleans native Robin Robichaud, leader of the Standard Cotton Company. Judah P Benjamin, a man with a resounding reputation throughout the south, spoke calmly, opposite to the rambunctious and vocal southerners. “Gentlemen, blood is not needed in this feud. This uprising can be put down with logic, and thought, something which is vacant in the head of their leader Davis. That land, as many of you know it, is bad land, i once heard someone say that grass grows rough in that soil. Let me reach out to our brothers in the Alabama, along the Mississippi, and Tennessee. They'll starve before they can create a nation of their own.” The State Capitol imploded with arguments, applauses, and cat callers. “Order! Silence!” called repeatedly the President of the union, Thomas Semes. “We shall have an honourable debate here, and at the end there shall be a vote, as we have inscribed in the Charter. The floor belongs to Franklin Culpeper.” A old man rose slowly up, using several adjacent delegates as well as his strong oak cane to rise to his aged feet. “I believe what Mr. Benjamin speaks has merit! Why rush to use a sword to complete a task a pen can do better!” “CHARLES CLARK” yelled a voice that was quickly drowned by the congress. “I agree with the respectable Robichaud! If we stay idle, then we may risk losing 10 times the men as they prepare for their impending doom!” The deep rings of a large clock resonated throughout the hall. “Finish up, Clark.” “We must fight! We must send a message written in blood to all those who go against the south! WE MUST KILL THE BLUE DRESSED SCUM!”

The hall’s voices quieted down as the President of the Union rose from his seat at the head of the hall. “This Honourable House will now vote on Act 00.00.4C, those in favour please raise your hand high and say Aye.” A large chorus of Ayes, including several yells from the back of the court. The tallyman, dressed in a wood brown colour, scurried through the pews quickly counting the protruding hands. “Those in favour please lower your hands. Those against please raise your hands and call Nay.” A wave of hands rose in the air, and the tallyman once again began his job. A large whisper overtook the hall, as the tallymans eyes drifted up to the stage and found that the President's hand was raised as well, which the tallyman promptly recorded. All eyes shifted from the President to the tallyman, as he went from row to row, counting each hand raised in the air. When he reached the back of the hall, he walked briskly to the front of the delegation, and handed a cream folded paper to the President. The delegates were silent as each man was anxiously awaited the verdict. Each man tracked Semmes fingers as he unraveled the paper, and paused for a moment looking at the results. He then redirected his gaze to the crowd and he calmly stated, “The vote has been tallied. 64 Ayes, 59 Nays, 6 abstainmentss. The act does pass.” The court goes wild after the decision is made, and many make the long trip down to the front pew, where they rejoice with the ecstatic Robichaud, the self proclaimed leader of the faction of the Pro-War delegates.

War, it seems, while it has already begun and ended to the west of the Mississippi, will blaze to its east and the state begins to rally its forces to put down the traitorous rebels who have rejected the will of their people.

-A new government is formed with the union of the two former nations. It is much similar to the prior government of Louisiana and the disintegrated United States, in a republican form with a congress and a president, however majority power is delegated to the Congress, and the President, while being the executive figure of the Confederacy, has decreased power compared to its historical counterpart in Washington. “Power to the little people” becomes championed by Semmes, the father of the charter of the Confederacy.

L4EvUjNby1-odigdtuvXLTdJhDpLUeX0mPHPTjRww3nCwjgEG5rgYaTnBBHrpkcNMcgSdiAV4LOdscMOq1q60LZLjV6V3CrgnCkJagl7bKYQNep8P11CweLKJgZc4Kp8fBFz_E6G

-The capital of the confederacy is chosen to be Vicksburg, chosen because of its accessibility to both states, and because of its position on the Mississippi. Work begins on developing the Louisiana side of the Vicksburg, as the government encourages settlement on the western side to expand the capitol. Businesses and administrators begin building their stores and buildings across the Mississippi as the city is encouraged to grow with the migration of the Government.

-The Forts of Jackson and St. Phillip, now under the flag of the Confederacy, begin repairs and remodelations to achieve their former glory. Several river batteries are commissioned to be added, 2 on the side of St. Phillip, and 3 in the Fortress Complex of St. Jackson. All of these batteries are armed with state of the art weapons imported from Europe, including 7-8 inch rifled artillery pieces, capable of demolishing ships of the lines and other wooden ships. Each battery contains 4 of these massive guns, under an assortment of mounts.

-The State calls for the recruitment of 60 thousand men to put down the rebellion. Three divisions of 20,000 will be assigned to the following Major Generals of the Confederacy: PGT. Bureagaurd, Earl Van Dorn, and. Bureagaurd, for his maneuvers and valiance displayed at the sieges of Fort Jackson and Fort St. Phillip, is named General of the Army of the Mississippi, as it has been called. The various generals are given leeway to pick and choose their Brigadier Generals as they choose to maximise coherence and command efficiency. The Secretary of War relays to the Major General that they will have their own Armies at the end of this conflict.

-After a long debate in the legislature, and followed by a close vote, the nation has decided to adopt the British Pound as it currency. Several main driving factors fueling this decision is the power that it holds, its renowned stability, and the fact that it eases trade with one of the largest markets in Louisiana, Great Britain and therefore most of Europe. The President of the Confederacy drafts a formal letter to the British Sovereign, relaying their wishes to the British Government. The Spanish Dollar was heavily advocated for in the legislature, as well as the Northern Dollar by several individuals with personal trade interests in the companies of the North, however the pound has won the day.

-The New Orleans government opens up the Mississippi river exit into the Gulf for commercial ships from nations with an agreement with the Confederacy. All other nations allow ships through, however with a massive tax. Ships are ordered to stop at New Orleans on their way through, and cotton begins to be exported once more from plantations on the Mississippi to Textile factories and farms in the North, and in Britain, where a everly increasing market for cotton is found.

-With the massive loss of life of the Louisiana Tigers, the division begins to scout out able bodied, experienced, brave veterans from the infantry to replace the lives lost. Being a part of this famed brigade brings honour to a person's family and is thought to be a peak in a infantryman's military career, often serving as a pipeline into the officer core. The best infantrymen make it into the Tigers, whom continue intense drilling and trainings to maintain their high level of skill and discipline.

-A military academy is made in the city of New Orleans, called officially the Military Academy of the Confederacy of Southern States, but among the military elite and alumni, it is called South Point. This academy, while it was intended to be a place for infantrymen to learn to lead men and divisions into the horror of battle, quickly specialises in cavalry tactics and training under the administration of Major General Earl van Dorn. “I have capitalised on the natural southern talent-horsemanship.” He writes in his personal diary. Many Southerners grew up on horseback and were very skilled with them, providing a exceptional opportunity to create a fearsome cavalry corps.

-The old Federal mint of New Orleans is seized by the government, and to their surprise, they encounter thousands upon thousands of Gold and silver coins, almost half a million dollars in value. The coins however, were obsolete under the dissolution of the Union, and were useless now. Therefore the government begins the task of slowly melting down the gold and silver into bullion, which is kept in a discrete highly guarded military establishment known to only high members of the national government.

-A Negro labour corps is established for the Army. This is a corps of government owned slaves which are forced to do menial tasks in war time. Mainly dig trenches, carry the baggage, prepare defenses. The labour corps follows the main army around, and are often entrusted to the responsibility of the corps or divisional commander. The purpose of this is to maximise the number of white, Anglo-Saxon able bodied soldiers as possible for use in the preservation of the Nation.

-Judah P Benjamin, a prominent figure of the Confederacy, is sent to Europe to negotiate a variety of deals with a variety of European Governments and complete a list of tasks in the name of the Confederacy. He is named Ambassador, and is sent to London as his first destination.

-With the Mississippi open, the slave market begins to flourish. Blacks from the Carribean instead of African natives are used as merchandise however. Blacks often times already live in slavery or in extreme poverty in many areas around the carribean, and slavers preach of freedom, and wealth to be found in America. These men are then impressed into slavery, never to return to their homeland again. Instead these men are shipped up the Mississippi to other Southern Slave states such as Arkansas, Tennessee, and Kentucky.

-Letters are sent to Alabama, and Tennessee requesting them to close all markets to the rebel state of ‘Northern Mississippi.’

THE UNION OF CONCORD

ywT8ZAyvac4U1__V49dNGao7GyApFhDS904SwAd62NYRCKaGaTNFaftNa9uEkSdAs9J7IZc-quEBXGIb16Jir5Ov51AWEiUQ8U4Cbsp0NoIwndKfH5K0EpInLmQ5CYlKdqPbeOif

The Lord’s Year of 1862.

Ichabod Goodwin looked out the window. The Union was prospering. Vermont had accepted their proposal to join the Union. However, there was still much to do, but the election was coming up.

He hurried around his office space, writing the documents that could well be the last ones he’d write as President. He believed them to be important, one of them particularly so. He had simple called it “A Declaration for the People of Maine”, a title that in itself did not reveal much, but it read as such:

“To the People of Maine,

It saddens us to hear about your corrupt and despicable government, once again throwing you into the shackles of the decrepit British Empire. You do not deserve to be a Dominion of them, you do not deserve this treatment.

Dearest People of Maine,

I, Ichabod Goodwin, the President of the Union of Concord, encourage you to rise up against these tyrants that have shackled and imprisoned you. I encourage you to fight them, every one of you. We are free, we should be free, and we will forever remain free. Your government will not be able to stop you. The Union of Concord is by your side. Rise up, and join us.”

’No Sympathy for Concord Bullies’

People of Maine,

Do not listen to the ramblings of this bitter and covetous tyrant. We offered them the olive tree and peace, but they seem desperate to undermine our State; to inflame famine, war and fire. These are the works of evildoers, and not good Christian souls.  I for one shall not be bullied into their ‘Union,’ and will fight for the liberty of Maine.

They call us a tyranny, yet have no proof thereof. I ask you, how has the Dominion acted tyrannous toward you? Have we suspended the freedom of the press, raised a standing army to occupy our towns, or mistreated our people in any way? Verily, we have not, but have sponsored learning, prosperity, and the free enterprise of Man. Meanwhile, this so-called Union has attempted to bully you into their gang using contemptible tactics. Who is the real tyrant? Who is the real enemy? I say it is them.

Britain never forced us along this path. We in Maine simply desire peace, prosperity and isolation. The British bring those things, whilst these Unionists render destruction, embody greed, and are evildoers; they wish to force us along THEIR path.

THE P.M
