Governor: Andrew Curtin

Population: 3,103,574

Internal reforms

Music echoes down the hall, the building is filled with talking men, laughter, and song. Curtain returned from the back porch of the tavern after taking a final puff of his cigarette and snubbed it out on an ashtray before returning inside and greeting the congressmen who came to have a meeting with him over a few pints. It was a little early still so the tavern was quite empty, with only 3 other patrons in the whole place, and a band performing songs.

The men all greet one another before ordering their pints and sitting down with many matters to discuss. The main topic was that of war. It was congress and the military who had pushed Curtin to send the ultimatum to Delaware in the first place, and now here they were trying to reassure Curtin that everything would work out, and that it would be a quick war, the Delawareans stood no chance he was told. But it was fact that the only reason Curtin supported and went along with these aims was because his party, and his supporters in congress wanted it. And so Curtin stopped them mid sentence and informed them all that while he did not see any need in expanding he would support his ‘friends’ and their ambitions, he would make all the necessary preparations and send word to the military that with Delaware's refusal comes only one possible outcome, WAR.

As the congressmen now sat back relaxed they gave him reassurance and thanked him before turning to the next subject. The hours went on, pint after pint was had. The sound of mugs clinking together filled the room as now more people came for a drink. The smell of cigarette smoke and beer filled the room.

While Curtin drank he thought to himself. And he wondered what the rest of the countries neighboring the Commonwealth might think. He was worried it would get out of hand and something would go wrong. It was no secret Curtin wished to see Pennsylvania succeed in her newfound independence. But he felt it was best to tread carefully when taking others independence, especially with tensions rising all over America, with the absence of the union there was a power vacuum and no doubt there were already those intent on filling it. But in a situation like that America was a powder keg and anything could set it ablaze.

Military actions

An additional 32k recruits are requested for the army, With war shortly starting men are very much needed. the USS Pennsylvania along with 2 sloops and 2 Frigates construction is finished and they are ordered to be ready for war.

A special request for Spencer Carbine rifles, ammunition and Blakeslee cartridge boxes and cannons/ cannon balls is sent to the government via the Army. They request as many of the aforementioned items as possible, so with a stockpile of raw materials coming being mined and being shipped in from almost every neighboring country, So at Allegheny Arsenal production of these items is started in hopes to put the large surplus of materials to use making the goods for much cheaper.

The Commonwealth has her army in place on the border, and navy in place to crush any resistance there is a silence in the air. Each side not knowing when war will come, but knowing it is coming.

Propaganda against Delaware is made and distributed all across the country as well as propaganda about joining the army and bringing honor to your name.

Lastly, Intelligence is gathered of Delaware border forces/forts.

The State of New York

The Battle of Newark

Following a costly but successful battle in the city of Newark, the state of New York once again offers New Jersey a peaceful solution in which the two states unite without bloodshed. This war was not necessary, only the protection of New Jersey and New York’s assets in the state were. The New York Senate arranges for funerals and honors for the fallen and attempts to ensure the bodies of New Jersians reach their own families. Furthermore, New York would grant the First Army two months leave following their valiant efforts, and would attempt to raise more men to fill their ranks and reach the goal of 150,000 soldiers.

The Navy

The State of New York funds research into the design of armored ships. They would work off of reports from the Royal Navy of ships with hulls made of iron and would attempt to produce something of a similar capacity. The shipwrights at the Brooklyn Navy Yard are given what they need so they may build a workable prototype. Additionally, two ships of the line, two frigates, and four sloops fo war are commissioned.

The Elections of 1962

With the upcoming elections, Cornelius Vanderbilt would continue his run for the Presidency. Formally announcing his intention to run, he would attempt to use his company’s aid in the Battle of Bergen to boost his own popularity. He would tour throughout the country and promote his cause, calling for the rise of the New York Central Railway and the continuation of the American Dollar. His entire campaign is centered around the growth of New York through trade and cooperation with the remains of the Union.

West Point

The New York Senate begins to refund the West Point Military Academy in hopes of greatly approving their own tactics and capabilities in warfare. They would continue to use the documents found in the building to promote these efforts, and would even go as far as to quietly offer some of the better officers from other states generous salaries should they teach in the Academy.

ACTIONS

[See Battle of Newark]

A prototype ironclad begins development. Two ships of the line, two frigates, and four sloops of war begin to be laid down.

Cornelius Vanderbilt continues his bid for the Presidency in November of 1962 as well as the continued expansion of the New York Central Line.

The West Point Academy is reopened and money is put into developing a proper curriculum, as well as hiring renowned officers throughout the former Union.

Southern Union

The invasion of the rebel North Mississippi begins. The First Army, lead by Bearegaurd, descends upon the Mississippians, with 200 cannons in tow. Separate divisions are lead by Braxton Bragg, Earl Van Dorn, and Richard Barksdale. They invade Northern Mississippi in force, slaughtering rebels when they seen them.(Battle plans will come)

-Judah B Benjamin is tasked with now garnering support for the confederacy with the British empire, hopefully gaining access to weaponry, training, ships, in return for favorable trade deals involving cotton, the confederacies life sustaining crop.

-Tennessee is condemned for supporting an enemy of the confederacy.

-At Gulf Point, calvary tactics continue to be reviewed and reformed to create an effective, renowned, and fearful calvary corps. They utilize the southern tradition of horsemanship to their advantage to hone and breed their skills to a fine tip. If successful, the confederacy will have the best cavalry in the nation.

-Quebecers from British Canada are encouraged to move to Louisiana where they and their culture would be accepted in the former French colony of Louisiana.

-The standard cotton company increases its cotton pool, and begins shipping cotton from plantations in the Mississippi to northern textillery.

-The pound is established as the currency of the union, and a mint is established, functioning on the orders of the Exchequer general.

1862

January-June

Events

1862

The Second French intervention in Mexico begins after Mexico’s failure to meet loan interest payments. It is supported by both Britain and Spain, on January 6, the invasion force lands in Veracruz

Westminster Bridge opens in England, replacing the old one

France acquires the territories of Bien Hoa, Gia Dinh, and Dinh Tuong from Vietnam

The first all american ironclad debuts! In late June, the construction of the Virginia is completed. Boasting two smoke stacks, a large array of cannons, a ram, and a completely metal hull it is the first of its kind on the American continent!

The Union of Concord

The army begins to organize in rally throughout the union. As the early months conclude roughly 13,000 men have joined up.

Pennsylvania Commonwealth

The occupation of Delaware is swift and thorough. Though alike New York’s own invasion, is full of blunders, logistical issues, and leadership errors. As it becomes June, Delaware is completely occupied.

Production of supplies continues. Spencer carbines however are still a rare commodity. They are produced in very small numbers of rather low quality due to the insufficient tooling and the expensive cost.

New York

A designer by the name of John Ericsson is contracted to begin development of the new Ironclad. Estimates show that by mid 1863 the vessel will be fully designed, constructed, tested, and become seaworthy.

Vanderbilt’s campaigning continues, his fortunes help fund tours across the country. As the early months conclude he’s built a large platform.

West point reopens, though the current cost of the NJ war and the funds directed to the fleet restricts much of its potential.

Southern Union

Garnering support for the confederacy within the British Empire begins. Though some success is achieved using King Cotton diplomacy, the British seem hesitant to invest themselves into what is arguably a very unstable region.

The drive to entice Quebecers to resettle is largely unsuccessful. Though a few do opt to pack up and move to the Confederacy

The expansion of the standard cotton company increases

The pound is successfully adopted and put into circulation within the Confederacy

IOWA

A blockade on Arsenal island is imposed, it is met with a Federal denouncement.

The initial railroad contracts are gradually completed by mid 1862, much earlier than expected.

Commonwealth of Massachusetts

The expansion of manufacturers continue

The array of forts guarding the rail and supply lines are finished near the end of May

The order of two ships of the line and three frigates are put in. By December they are expected to be completed.

The creation of the Commonwealth Rangers is successful, though its largely regarded as a low priority organization. The delivery of level action rifles never arrives, either being too expensive or the order never being placed

Commonwealth of Virginia

*Outrage had ensued with the Union failure to help pay for the damages they had done in Virginia. But Lee and Letcher were not looking to force them to pay. Instead they take the apology with grace, and maintain their end of the bargain. They respect D.C’s territory, and the Union army within it. And that was that for the higher up elites of Virginia. But more and more less powerful men were becoming outraged at this chain of events.

*Men like JEB Stuart, or Fitzhugh Lee. They had spent the past year helping West Virginia rebuild. They saw the devastation and death first hand. Many shattered homes, or burnt farmsteads. They were not so easy to forgive. No money, just empty words. Robert Lee and the Northern Army were in Virginia proper. But here the 2nd Volunteer Army was embedded in West Virginia under Henry Thomas. He opted to remain in Virginia, and lead through Brigadier General John Mosby, until the army was properly formed.

*Mosby, Stuart, and Fitzhgh all met one dark night in Harper’s Ferry. The moon was blotted from the sky. With several prominent W. Virginians, they decided to take matters into their own hands. They don Union standard issue uniforms, and wear cloaks and caps. Many daub their faces in black, or wear cloth or more elaborate mask. And they are armed to maim, whips, torches, pistols, blunderbusses. JEB uses him and his veteran cavalry to scout a path into Maryland. There the riders will conduct quick raids on the Marylanders, under the guise of Union Troops.

**The Virginia Ironclad launches from her dock in Richmond. She was the first of her class, and deadly. Admiral Farragut had spared no expense. The hull was all steel, and had a strong enough motor. It had required two smoke stacks, for the amount of steam pressure needed. She will begin her maiden voyage with quite the test. Her, and the rest of the Virginian fleet, will make an arduous sail.

**They are headed to Africa, to establish a military fort. Numerous supply ships and barges will go with the fleet, to carry troops, and supplies. They will aim to establish a fort in a suitable harbor south of the Portuguese lands in the mysterious congo. They will not sail in one massive fleet. The Virginia and her fellow ships of the line will spear head the fleet with some troops. In increasing waves over a few months the colonist and extra supplies will follow up.

***Virginia praises the French intervention in Mexico, and offers several of her Generals to assist in operations, them being veterans of the Mexican-American war. She denounces the northern notion of enforcing the Monroe doctrine. It was the start of an increasingly clear Virginian shift towards supporting European powers.

sumter-3.png

In other news over the past year, Virginia continues to manage her economy and slaves carefully. Industry will continue to slowly grow, the government not wasting extra money trying to subsidize it. However thanks to the wealth of local aristocrats, the main government did have somewhat of a surplus budget. The Army was paid by the Commonwealth as a whole, and supplied themselves.

As a result this year will see a good portion of Virginian mines, industry, and shipyards dedicated to forming her first Ironclad squadron. Most of Virginia is left to it’s self {as confederates love over Gov intervention} as the main government focusses on building the Virginia two sister ships.

The Federal Empire of California - El Imperio Federal de California

Early and Late 1862

Population: ~476.000
Army Size: ~14.000

The Oregonian Provinces:
After Oregon’s refusal to join the Federal Empire, ten thousand Californian soldiers were sent northward across the border to make the state’s government reconsider. Without too much of a struggle and a minimal loss of soldier lives, Oregon and the Federal Empire were able to come to an understanding, and thus the territory was brought under Imperial rule. The invasion had begun on the 10th of February 1862 and practically ended little over a month later as Californian troops seized Portland on the 18th of March. By the end of March, order had been established in the occupied territory, and the Treaty of Salem was signed, citing the full annexation of Oregon by the Federal Empire of California.

Organization:
With the brief invasion of Oregon over, the Federal Empire looked to make some consolidations. Two thousand Californian soldiers remained in Oregon to keep order there, while the rest of the army moved back south. The former counties of Oregon were made into provinces of the Empire. Construction would also be started on a new road network with San Francisco as its center. Focus would be put on the road to Portland, as no proper infrastructure was present yet in the new Oregonian lands. Professionalization of the growing Californian armed forces would also be a major focus of this Organization effort.

Economy:
Attention was also put in the productivity of the Californian economy. Gradually, steps would be made towards state-capitalism, with the founding of enormous state-ran orchards and vineyards in the south of the empire, as well as the founding of the “Californian Lumber Company” which entailed setting up vast plots of land for woodcutting, mostly in what used to be Oregon and northern California. Similar efforts were made regarding the lifestock industry, all at the expense of small homesteads, which would slowly be getting outcompeted by the state-ran companies, according to the plans of the Imperial Government. These small, local farmers would of course in turn be provided work for at the larger companies.

International Relations:
An envoy is sent north to Vancouver to seek diplomatic relations with Canada and in turn, the British crown, as well as for them to recognize Californian claims to former U.S. territories west of the Rocky Mountains, especially regarding the Californian-Canadian border in what was currently known as the Washington Territory.
Also, a secret telegram is sent to the French Staff in Veracruz, who were intervening to establish the Empire of Mexico with Maximilian I of Austria as its leader. The message would be brief, but suggested the establishment of Franco-Californian relations with an embassy in San Francisco, and the discussion of Californian participation in the conflict alongside the many other parties that were involved, for which the Imperial Federation might want ownership of Baja California after a French victory.

Joseph Hooker is sitting in his office when a man comes rushing in, stopping to salute. The young man holds out a piece of paper, “Sir, I have news from the naval yards the ships have finished.” Joseph offers a nod as he takes the paper.

“Thank you soldier, your dismissed.” Joseph tosses the paper down, walking to his window. ‘An Ironclad has just rolled off the docks in Virginia these wooden ships aren’t enough,’ he thinks to himself. Hooker walks back to his desk and quickly pens a letter to congress.

Meanwhile congress once again meets towards the end of December. A new bill proposed by the recently formed New England party that hopes to lift the tariffs on European goods as been blocked by the commonwealth party which makes up a majority.

Naval Funding Act

By request of commander and chief Joseph Hooker, funding has been directed to the ever growing commonwealth navy. The new funding shall be put forth to the construction of the commonwealths first Ironclad.

Actions

-Designing of an Ironclad begins with plans to construct and test it. Joseph Hooker looks for an expert to help with the construction.

-with the forts finished, men are sent to garrison them across the commonwealth. Fort Alexander which defend the capital of Boston has been named the headquarters for the Commonwealth Military.

-Plans for the production of Spencer Carbine rifles, ammunition and Blakeslee cartridge boxes and cannons/ cannon balls are sent out to the manufactures to start producing them.

-Two new parties now make up congress, New England Party (minority), and Commonwealth Party (Majority).

-Congress has passed the first draft, calling all men white and black between 16 and 30 to register for the draft. Able to be called on if the country needs them.

-The army continues to drill and train.

Dear, Sophia

I miss you dearly, I plan to visit once I have leave next month. Fort Hooker has becoming full of men, nearly 3,000 here alone with twenty thousand station along the border. Most of my days are spent drilling my men, and patrolling the surrounding roads.

How has your father been? I know he was sick when I left, I hope he's gotten out of bed since then.

Your Love,

A. Wellington

FEDERATION OF CONNECTICUT AND RHODE ISLAND

(multi turn)

tbHSOUPj4w8D9a0nQNJYLDPddNMABp03kSfeeU93Omy-Amrsc2AJhgn58yXiQc9uLHMH5dqw--hMmDABF9kyQGDqN6MqprLffx7XYxREWoJKlVucB6ktEtWv_SPKNP-vdBA8DqN6Providence, Rhode Island, 1861

“...It pains me to say that the once United States of America are now no more. Brother turns against brother in this new age of turmoil. But yet, the men and women of Connecticut stand arm and arm with those of Rhode Island, in solidarity. There is hope yet for our future. All is not lost. As we always have, we shall prevail.”

“I ask much of the Connecticutian and Rhode Islander. No longer can we rely upon the aid and the protection of the Federal Government. We stand alone, a potential feast for the wolves of the southern yolk. And to that I say, we will not go silently. Nay, we will fight for every inch of Connecticut and Rhode Islander soil with tooth and nail.”

“We all must do our part, citizens of the Federation. I ask that those with heart for their homeland, those proud sons of Connecticut or Rhode Island, and those courageous enough enlist within the new Federation Army. And I ask that their families support their decisions, give food and quarter should a serviceman need and donate what precious iron you can spare to our industrial effort. For it is time to get the gears of our Federation moving once more.”

And with that, the Governor stepped off the podium. His strides indicated urgency as he walked with an entourage of men into a cordoned off theater, presumably to meet with his Cabinet.

ACTIONS

  • The state-owned manufacturing plants finish construction (Turn 1). The plants are given the directive to new weapons such. M1861s are ordered in high quantity, as well as Colt Army Models and sabres for the officers and cavalry. (Mod)

  • A number of 12-pounder Napoleon guns are ordered. (Mod)

The State of New York

The Election of 1862

With Cornelius Vanderbilt sweeping the Republican nomination for the Presidency, he continues to campaign into the second half of the year for the upcoming elections in New York. He is expected to win by a large margin, and promises to ensure that the state exceeds where it was when in the Union. Railway expansions, a strong New York Military, and a rise in the New York dollar are all promised as his primary goals to ensure the success of the state in the coming years where more turmoil is easily expected. A primary focal point of his candidacy also includes the completion of a Trans-American Railway, allowing New York to connect with the western states who housed an abundance of raw material.

The American Dollar

New York continues to aim for the other states to adopt the American Dollar and reaches out to the governments of Tennessee, Kentucky, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Indiana to see if there is any interest in adopting the currency. It is backed by the banks of New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Iowa who continue to contain some of the largest industries after the fall of the Union. In New Jersey, occupied regions would also be introduced to the currency as a means to spread its use more.

Fort Jay

The Fourth Infantry Corps are formed out the new recruits, consisting of 25,000 men. They are ordered to besiege Fort Jay and offer the federal soldiers the option to lay down their arms, walk out of the fort, and return home. Should they not accept, the soldiers would settle in and prepare to lay siege to the fort until the men surrendered it. Upon acquiring the fort, supplies and stocks for be quickly accounted for and transitioned into the existing army while the fort becomes occupied by a garrison as a fort controlled by the state.

The New York Navy

The navy doubles its prior order of ships from the Brooklyn Naval Yard, and orders four ships of the line, four frigates, and eight sloops of war begin to be laid down to bolster their own fleet. The New York Senate and presidential candidate Cornelius Vanderbilt both lead the push for the massive naval expansion as a way to protect shipping routes with the Confederation of Southern States and Virginia, as well as their connection to London.

Continued Industrial Growth

New York capitalists are encouraged to continue building and buying land throughout the state as well as in other states who upheld private ownership. Oilmen were encouraged to begin looking in other states, and a young man by the name of John D. Rockefeller is eyed as a man to begin searching in Ohio for possible sources of oil. Financiers such as J.P. Morgan are encouraged to and often begin to loan and finance new industries which seem exceptionally promising to aid in the foundations of the oil industry, and are also used to help propel growth in the occupied regions of New Jersey where it can be hoped the population can be quickly swayed to the side of New York.

Mod for the Election of 1862. Vanderbilt runs on the platform of promising railway expansions within New York and a line to California, continued military growth and improvement, and a continued rise in the economy of New York.

New York reaches out to the governments of Tennessee, Kentucky, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Indiana to see if there is any interest in adopting the American Dollar. New Jersey is also requested to use it following the end of their war.

Fort Jay is besieged and the soldiers are granted the option to leave peacefully if they lay down their arms. The Fort would then be occupied and controlled as part of the New York Military.

Four ships of the line, four frigates, and eight sloops of war are ordered for construction at the Brooklyn Naval Yard.

Oilmen such as John D. Rockefeller are pushed to look in western states such as Ohio and Pennsylvania for oil, while financiers such as J.P. Morgan are encouraged to fund such ventures, as well as projects in New Jersey.

New York investors would approach Smith and Wesson, Springfield Armory, and Volcanic Repeating Arms to offer them generous sums in order to open factories within the state.

Events

1862

The French Intervention in Mexico continues, on April 9th Britain and Spain withdraw from the military coalition, leaving France as the sole participant in the campaign. Virginian officers, some with experience in the Mexican-American war arrive to aid the French in their campaign. On May 5th at the Battle of Puebla, French troops win yet another victory over their Mexican  foes. Later in the year, both Tampico and Xalapa were occupied.

The abolitionist movement continues its spread across the ‘Border States’ many abolitionist parties begin to form in states such as Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, Maryland and Missouri.

In direct response to the C.S.S’s formation and takeover of much of the Cotton industry as well as the rise of cooperationist ideas, the states of Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina join together as the Confederate States of America.

Commonwealth of Virginia

Jeb Stuart leads a number of successful raids into Maryland. The state is slow to respond, and raids continue to hamper the state until late fall when the attacks become more dangerous. The raids, though it is unknown who is responsible for them are largely praised in West Virginia and much of Virginia proper.

The French accept Virginian support in the war after losing the support of both Britain and Spain earlier in the year. Many of the men sent to France prove decisive in the Battle of Puebla.

Only a portion of the planned funds are committed to the Ironclad squadron, and plans for two sister ships are drawn up. However this sees lots of controversy within the Government and public alike. The plan to commit all of the planned funding does not pass and instead a compromise is made, Many see the expansion of the fleet unnecessary, especially when other areas are being completely neglected.

A small military fort and accompanying settlement is established in the Congo. Domestically, few care for it and many more question the government's expenditures.

Pennsylvania Commonwealth

The ‘5 Year Plan’ is drawn up and put into effect

Production of Spencer Carbines slows significantly. Several factories purchase more advanced machines and tooling. Overall the quality of the rifles improves, but they are delivered in even smaller numbers.

The act to begin conscription is vetoed as quickly as it is proposed. However, partially copying New England, an act calling for fighting age men to register for a ‘draft’ should the nation need soldiers is passed. Additionally, more volunteers bolster the armies numbers after the occupation of DE, bringing the standing force to 75k.

The government begins subsidization of paramilitary forces and militias. Many begin to spring up over the course of the year.

Development of the Ironclad begins, several engineers and designers are recruited to design one. Though it is far from perfected, good progress is made. Many of its characteristics are blatantly copied from the Virginia

Federal Empire of California

The Organization effort begins. Military engineers and companies are contracted to expand the road network of the Empire. Additionally, a growing sense of professionalism and nationalism festers in the Imperial Army as they continue their training throughout the year.

Steps are slowly taken to introduce ‘State-Capitalism’ though it is gradual. Many of the new state run institutions such as the “Californian Lumber Company” and many of the Southern Orchards see very immediate success. Public opinion of this program are quite low, especially among farmers, ranchers, and lumberjacks.

The Envoy dispatched to Vancouver is mildly successful. The British Crown recognize the Empire’s claim to much of the former US’s western territories; however they do not seem willing to help enforce them.

The French seem eager to worker more with the Empire. French-Californian relations are established in an embassy in San Franciso. Should California become more involved in the conflict the idea of ceding Baja California to the Empire is reasonable.

Commonwealth of Massachusetts

A staff of engineers and designers are recruited to begin work on the Ironclad. They make good progress, copying lots from both European designs and that of the Virginia. Good progress is made, but estimates suggest a working model won't be ready until next year.

Plans for the manufacturing of Spencer Carbines are laid out and production begins late in the year. Many of the early models suffer from the same issues as PA’s. The rifles are expensive and complex compared to regular muskets and many are delivered in low quality due to improper tooling and machines.

Federation of Connecticut and Rhode Island

Much of the military’s ordered ordinance such as m1861s and 12 pounder Napoleons are successfully delivered to the troops.

The growth of the private industry continues with the aid of Government subsidies. Uniforms and caps are delivered to the Army in good amounts. Every man has a uniform and cap.

The call for another 30,000 men is largely unsuccessful, the peacetime army of 20,000 is largely considered to be more than sufficient at protecting the Federation’s interests. The act to register all men for selective service passes however.

The development of the Ironclad begins.

The Boy scouts are successfully founded, many of the troops get a large influx of membership.

The 1st Connecticut Pioneer Regiment is successfully formed. The best and brightest of the regular army is transferred into the regiment. They begin arduous and extensive training.

New York

Cornelius Vanderbilt experiences lots of popularity on the campaign trail. During the elections he wins by a strong margin, making him the 1st official president (for life) of the state of New York.

Of the Governments reached out to, only the Republic of Asbury and Kentucky adopt the American Dollar.

Fort Jay, one of the last Federal holdouts surrenders in early December of 1862 after realizing the futility of their cause and the desperate lack of supplies. The New York military successfully occupied it following the surrender.

The ships are ordered and expected to be finished by mid 1863.

Many of the approached companies eagerly open more facilities within the state.

Dominion of Maine

The militias continue their regular trainings and subsequently improve. Men from the British Rifle Brigade are a great help.

The prints are well accepted virtually everywhere, American public opinion of the state begins to improve. The Dominion even sees a minor influx in immigrants over 1862.

The docks at Portland begin improvement, much is done during the later half of 1862, however construction isn't estimated to completely finish until the spring of 1863.

Ohio

Subsides to Ohio’s industry continue to flow, over the course of 1862 it sees major growth, continuing to maintain its position as one of the largest on the American continent.

The additional 3 brigades of infantry are recruited, supplied, and trained.

The continued expansion of the arsenals is successful more tooling and machines are purchased to help produce more sophisticated weaponry and additionally improve production of standard issue equipment.

WAR is declared on Indiana

Commonwealth of Virginia

Across West Virginia tales are told of the glorious raids into Maryland. They had hardly responded, and were whipped good and proper. However the fun was not to last. A few of Stuart’s best men had died. They did not let it sadden them though. They had all gotten some good and proper revenge. The Union and Maryland alike had submitted to Virginia’s will. However Lee recalls both men, as more interesting ventures arise.

In Virginia proper the higher government is forced to reroute their plans. Quite the ambitious lot, they had thrown too much into the naval expansion. Regardless it was still a year’s worth of work, alongside the next six months. However they did not try to dedicate the budget instead. They stick to using excess revenue, and whatever money Admiral Farragut can raise. This continued need for high finance raises a new issue. The British Pound is working great, but Virginia wanted a official source. Great Britain is invited to build a bank in Richmond.

In general the budget is balanced back to normal. Slow growth and taxation will continue to better Virginia’s industry. The slaves continue to work, rails continue to be laid, and seeds continue to be planted. The officers sent to assist the French spread tales of their battle, and continue aiding the French campaign. It is even suggested a Virginian regiment could be sent.

In other news it is announced Virginia and it’s main trading partner New York will host a war parade. Here men will march and drill side by side, to better train the armies. It is in light of recent militarization in the North. Some states had completely renounced slavery, and offered haven. Places like Indiana, or further west. Many southerners were worried, and New York was too. And so they will make a display of power. Two corps are sent, the 4th West Virginian and 1st Virginian. Lee himself commands, landing in New York City. He keeps a close eye on the men, with his officer cadre. They will ensure no fighting ensues. The 4th were Westerners anyway, and non slave owners. The 1st were well disciplined and veterans.

In the Congo the fort garrison begins to patrol nearby areas to project their power. However when encountering Tribal land they do not posture. They instead offer good trade deals, and access to Virginian markets. In respect to European law no slave trade is practiced. Brigadier General Ewell and the minted ‘6th Congo Regiment’ retain control.

Governor: Andrew Curtin

Population: 3,221,799

Internal reforms

Curtin makes a slow recovery and returns to office.

Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania is renamed to Neu Osterode. 64% of the 415 residents are German.

The question remains what to be done with the 1.4 thousand slaves that Delaware had. A solution is found by the government and done in secret. They are to be “Freed” by sending them to Maryland where they will be picked up by Virginian officials and sold in Virginia. In exchange for this Virginia will supply Pennsylvania with LARGE amounts of whisky.

Military actions

Construction on multiple other vessels starts on 1 frigate, 1 sloop of war, and 1 steam sloop and 1 ship of the line.

The military and its militias focus on drilling and perfecting tactics. And the government of Pennsylvania and the Army decide to implement ‘Sniper’ units into the army. The best of the best hunters will be accepted into this unit and a trial run will be implemented in order to test its effectiveness.

Production on Spencer Carbine rifles, ammunition and Blakeslee cartridge boxes and cannons/ cannon balls is continued, Sharps rifles are produced in small batches to be used in testing by the Military in a ‘war game’ involving rapists and the aforementioned ‘snipers’. The rapists will be released into a wooded area in which the snipers will have been set up in. If they can make it out they earn their “freedom” and will be pardoned from the state. The Sniper unites goal is to pick these moving targets off effectively and efficiently with limited ammunition. This will be a challenge for even the most veteran hunter. The prey will be very keen to make it out alive. This of course being withheld from the public.

Development on Ironclads is started.
