Mystic Seaport, Connecticut

At the dry docks of Mystic, the first of the Connecticuter lain ironclads was nearing the end of it’s construction. Suspended above the incline funneling the ship into the Sound was the F.S.S. Charter Oak, the first in it’s line. By all means, it was a prototype vessel. Ironclad technology had existed for some years in Europe. However, it’s introduction into the landscape of the raging American wars would come to change the face of naval warfare forever. A naval arms race had quickly developed. No doubt their foes in New York and Virginia had already devised plans to expand their current fleets. Thus, it was of essence that as many of these vessels as possible were pushed out into the blue waters.

The Ironclad had already demonstrated it’s awesome and destructive potential in the Battle of New York Harbor. Federation observers aboard wooden-hulled vessels carefully observed as the Virginian ship emerged from the fighting nearly unscathed, while sending two New Englander vessels to a watery grave. There was no choice but to develop their own. Within a matter of seconds, it was proven how wooden construction had become nearly obsolete. The weakness was ever prevalent; high susceptibility to explosive and incendiary ammunition. With the terrain being exploited to its fullest extent, iron and iron substitutes were shipped from the countryside to the manufacturing plants, and eventually to the shipwards. It was a scrounging in the most literal sense, yet it was necessary to fuel the warmachine and at least kept local populations employed.

As workers and engineers toiled away amidst the brisk New England winds, the ship was truly beginning to take shape. Atop, several workers were fitting the main gun into place, ensuring that it fit firm into its encasement. New, and largely untested technology was being utilized for the Charter Oak. A turret mount would allow for the cannon to strike targets all around the ship. Yet, would it be enough compared to a traditional broadside? Was there enough firepower? Had broadsides too become obsolete? Everything about this vessel and the new age it ushered in was a drastic break of convention. The Charter Oak stood as a testament to the resolve of New Englanders in the face of adversity. As the first to raise arms against the British, they were no stranger to amounting fierce resistance. While harkening back to the days of old, it also represented the possibility of a bright future, one paved by industry and advancement.

The vessel yearned for the sea. And so was the eager crewmen selected to service the magnificent vessel. Soon, it would time to put the ship through its paces. And soon the time would come when control was wrestled back into the hands of the New Englanders.

Hartford, Connecticut

In the aftermath of the Siege of New York, both sides had taken numerous casualties. The New Englander endeavor had proven fruitless as they seemed locked in eternal stalemate with New Yorker and Virginian forces. As word arrived to the homefront, a Convention once more was convened within the State House at Hartford/Various representatives from of Connecticut and Rhode Island assembled once more to voice their concerns and discuss the future of the nation.

The Federal Party was very eager to state their intention in continuing the war and bringing the offensive to the enemy. Yet, following the indecisive yet costly battle in the drive towards New York, many politicians had become slightly disillusioned. A new minority bloc had formed within the legislature, calling for a cessation of conflict and amends to be made with New York; comprising individuals from the Co-Prosperity Party. However vocal they may have been, their cries fell upon deaf ears. The Federalists held a resounding majority, and single handedly drove the agenda of the Federation. They had argued that to pull out of the war now would not only be seen as weak foreign policy, but also would force the New Englanders to pay large reparations for a war which very well may spark several years down the line. On top of that, some of representatives had sons serving in the armed forces, and they were determined to not let their sacrifices be for naught. With an hour or so of pointless bickering, the issue was settled.

Connecticut faced very real threats to her border, and thus a representative from New Haven County proposed the suggestion of creating various weapons caches throughout the country, should swaths of the Federation come under foreign occupation. It was not a scenario that one would like to think about, yet it was one that should be prepared for nonetheless. Dispersed throughout the countryside would be large amounts of weaponry, gunpowder, and sabres for future youth; the locations revealed only to local leaders. Should the need arise, the people would be armed in the defense of their nation.

Yet, that is to say, only if morale holds out for the duration of the war. As some representatives were disillusioned with the war, only likely would be those they represent. To have an uprising or any falter in confidence of the war would be crushing to all. As such, farther right constituents of the Assembly of the Federal Party proposed that a massive public opinion and propaganda campaign begin to ensure the stability of the nation and confidence in the state. Newspaper agencies would be pressured to paint the Federal government and war effort in a positive light. Meanwhile, the Pathfinder Boy Scouts would see a surge in activity. Now more than ever, comradery and loyalty was stressed. In addition, the option to buy war bonds was proposed to every citizen who wanted to give to the Federation and receive monetary recompense when the war blows over.

New Rochelle, New York

Following the fighting at the Siege of New York, a corporal serving with the Connecticut 10th Infantry Regiment, otherwise known as the “Gallant 10th”, writes home to his family,

“Dearest brother,

Do not worry for me. Thus far I have emerged from the fighting unscathed. Initially, we had made considerable gains. However, the advance slowed down considerably -- the New Yorker resistance grew fiercer the deeper we penetrated. That and their Virginian allies - damn them. Because of this, the war may drag on longer than anticipated. It is often said that your destiny is within your own hands, but never more have I felt that my fate was not up to me. During anyone of our skirmishes, I could have fallen in battle. All around me men were struck by rounds, blown to pieces by enemy cannon fire. It is a truly bloody affair that no man should ever have to bear witness to. I’ll spare you the details. But for now know, that I am in good health physically and mentally. As always, send my regards to our family. To mother that I miss her chicken roast now more than ever and to Emily that not an hour passes without her racing across my thoughts. And you brother, continue your schooling and do your country proud. You were always a bright one, I’m sure they’ll have a place for you at the academy at New Haven, yet.

Sincerely,

Thomas

1863

June-December

______________________

Events

1863

In December, Mexican forces are pushed over the brink. They had suffered defeat after defeat at the hands of the French Army. Baja California had been absorbed by the Empire. Mexico City had fallen earlier in the year along with many of Mexico’s larger cities. The government only loosely held the northernmost areas of the country. On December 15th 1863 the Government officially surrenders. The Empire of Mexico is established with Maximilian I at its head.

Following the death of Frederick VII of Denmark, the 2nd Schleswig-Holstein crisis begins.

Commonwealth of Massachusetts

The draft largely fails. Massachusetts had already conscripted huge portions of their manpower and the ones called up were vital for production of war material.

Loans are taken and the Ironclad project is kept afloat, adding even more to the Commonwealth’s national debt.

Public opinion of the war rises, though a portion of the population still sees it as unjustified.

Production of the spencer rifles begin to fall off. Most of the skirmishers and portions of the cavalry had already received the weapons. Commonwealth command saw the weapon as far too expensive, overly complicated, and to taxing on supply for regular infantry.

Pennsylvania Commonwealth

The five year plan continues as planned

A contract is obtained for the Whitworth rifle and small scale production begins. However alike the Sharps and Spencer rifles, it's far too expensive and complicated for large scale production.

A sister ship to the PCS Bismarck is laid down.

Union of Concord

Diplomats are dispatched to Europe, though embassies are established, most of the continent looks unfavorably on the New English.

Commonwealth of Virginia

The new government is formed in Richmond with Lee named ‘Lord Protector’. The reform invokes widespread and furious debate. Supporters of slavery and the aristocratic and landholding elite both supported the change, die hard southerners remain eerily quite. However particularly in northern and West Virginia where support for republicanism and abolitionism was more than prevalent the regression in slavery laws was unacceptable. In addition to the abolition of a seemingly democratic government provokes violence. West Virginian delegates officially separate themselves  from the government in Richmond. In December the area officially declares INDEPENDENCE from Virginia. Upon hearing this news, the West Virginian 4th Corps in New York refuses to continue fight and demands transportation back to West Virginia.

Congo expansion continues as planned, Virginians begin to penetrate deeper into the jungle.

Rifling of muskets and cannons begins in arsenals across the state. Tredgar Iron Works in Richmond is contracted to chiefly spearhead the project.

France laughs at Virginia asking for concessions after sending volunteers themselves.

The 300 Needle guns are delivered, at great expense to the government

New York

New York Central Railway and Erie Lackawanna Railway solidify their deal.

Investments continue to flow into the Republic of Asbury.

A contract for the production of Parrot rifles is given out. They enter production and distribution begins late in 1863.

A 2nd Ironclad is laid down, it is a sister ship to the first one finished only months earlier.

The additionally 25,000 men are recruited.

Federation of Rhode Island & Connecticut

The two additional Ironclad keels are laid down in Mystic and Portland shipyards respectively.\

The endeavor is completed and ready for 64’

The stockpiles begin dispersion and warbonds are but up for purchase, helping to supplement the Government’s spending. Additionally the light press censorship helps to raise public support and demonize the New Yorkers.

The brigades are raised

Musicians tour the military camps, raising the spirits of New English soldiers across the front.

Cincinnati League

The newly adopted firearm is put into production. Foundries across the league begin to churn out the rifle. By the end of the year sizeable portions of the army sport the new gun.

Expansion of the army in terms of manpower is authorized and completed. However the absurd amounts of rifled cannons and gatling guns requested are not met. Small deliveries are made but the ordinance is far to expensive for an outright purchase.

Michigan rejects the invitation

CSA

Thomas Semmes is re elected as president of the Confederacy. Seen as the main force behind southern unification, public opinion of him is very high.

Throughout Louisiana, the revival of French culture is well received. In schools French language begins to be taught again.

Discussion for the expedition is conducted. The census is that 64’-65’ would be perfect for such an endeavor.

The ironclad is laid down. Drawing inspiration from New York’s Commodore, its planned to feature a rotating turret with two Brooke guns of a larger caliber than on the existing Ironclad.

Development of a 300 pound Brooke gun begins

The Standard Cotton company slowly begins to absorb and assert dominance over the exportation of cotton to the north.

Treaties/Laws are solidified.

Military actions

Construction on multiple other vessels continues on 1 frigate, 1 sloop of war, and 1 steam sloop and 1 ship of the line.

The military and its militias focus on drilling and perfecting tactics. And the government of Pennsylvania and the Army decide to implement ‘Sniper’ units into the army. The best of the best hunters will be accepted into this unit and a trial run will be implemented in order to test its effectiveness.

Production on Spencer Carbine rifles, ammunition and Blakeslee cartridge boxes and cannons/ cannon balls is continued, Sharpe's rifles, Whitworths rifles, and now Colt Dragoons continues.

The Commonwealth demands a countrywide investigative law enforcement agency modeled off the Texas Rangers. They are to have many very important duties and training and recruitment will be very strict. All Pennsylvanian Rangers will be given a standard kit of a Hawken Rifle/ a colt dragoon, and a knife, with a spencer carbine being added if more are available.

‘Blessed be the LORD my strength which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight…’ - Psalm 144.

Maine, with the full backing of Britain, enters the war on the side of New York and Virginia. 7,000 militiamen, trained for years in skirmish warfare by now-Colonel Vourne, go into battle under the command of General Joseph Chamberlain. The army is ordered to observe strict discipline, refraining from looting or other crimes. Instead, the militia attack any military forces on their border with New Hampshire, and, if possible, advance into their territory.

Prime Minister Coburn recites Psalm 144 and says that, whilst Maine is a Dominion of peaceful intentions, aggressive attitudes on the part of the New England Alliance, including attempting to undermine the very foundations of the state by encouraging treasonable actions, have shown the Alliance to be warlike and hostile. ‘If, in a position of strength they attacked and undermined us, we cannot allow them to gain that strength again, for they WILL destroy us. Therefore, we must strike while it is THEY who are weak, and secure peace and security for Maine for years to come.’

‘I have just received a letter from Mister Temple. [British PM] We have his full backing. Freedom or death for Maine!’

The 1st Connecticut Light Artillery Battery, shelling Coalition forces near S. Washingtonville.

Not much had changed on the homefront of Connecticut. Families and wives eagerly awaited a cessation of conflict and the return of husbands, brothers, and sons. However, the war persisted. And it was everyone’s duty to uphold their loyalty and service to the state. Tears would be shed but everyone knew their duty in this dire time of need; beset upon from all sides.

Connecticut and Rhode Island had allied themselves with Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont in SOLIDARITY with their New Englander brothers. However, this compassion and sentiment was not present within the hearts of the Mainers. During the Revolutionary War, New England stood at the forefront of the British incursions Americans living in New Englander towns had everything to lose, gave everything, and claimed their INDEPENDENCE from their British oppressors TOGETHER. To forsake these age old bonds for the chains of servitude of a former overlord and oppressor disgusted the people of Connecticut. However with Maine’s unprovoked invasion, valid justification was not required for the New Englanders, who had long sought to wipe the British boot-licking excuse of a nation off of the AMERICAN Northeast.

Maine once formed an integral component of Massachusetts, only relinquished to allow the entry of a free state to balance out the South’s addition of a slave state. Would Massachusetts reclaim their long lost land -- would Connecticut? Many questions had arose during the course of the war, leaving many uneasy about peace and stability of the nation and America as a whole.

Nothing was certain. Connecticut and Rhode Island would endure, ensuring their foes pay the bloody price. What remains of America is now littered with nothing more than treacherous and opportunistic hyenas, preying upon the weak. A lamb no longer, a new order shall be forged in the flames of war, be it New England or the numerous enemies that conspire against them.

Congressional Elections of 1864

The election for the second term of the House of Representatives has arrived, the main issue on the platform is the war against New York. With the Commonwealth Party supporting the war, and currently holding the majority. Meanwhile the New England party calls for an end to the war and holds the minority in the House. After a heated season of debates between the pro and anti war factions, the election results come just as predicted. With a majority of the population still in favor of war, the Commonwealth Party holds on its majority in the House while the New England Party still clings to it minority. Meanwhile the campaign plans for the  1867 presidential election begin to be drawn by both parties. Representative Henry Wilson and current President Nathaniel P. Banks have shown interest in running for the Commonwealth party candidate, while Representative Edward Harris is seen as a front runner for the New England Party.

Dearest, Sophia.

The past week has been nearly nonstop fighting around the city of New York. Today we finally drove the New Yorkers back toward the city. My regiment was positioned near washingtonville. I’ll spare you the worst details of the fighting but in the the end it was the French soldiers who won the day. It seemed as if they broke at the sight of the French.

The battle lines have settled, it seems both armies will be waiting till winter to resume the fighting. Now I sit and watch the best minds of my generation waste away in the cold and diseased riddled camps. However, in these hard times I know the harder the conflict the more glorious the triumph.

Forever yours,

Alexander

The State of New York

The Battle of Troy

After nearly a year of folly and attempts at removing the New England Army from upstate New York, General Rickett’s Army successfully ran the occupying army from the city and hopefully, the state. While New York City still lay under siege by New Englanders and now Frenchmen, President Vanderbilt speaks in Albany which finally began its reconstruction, addressing the war. “Thousands have fallen in defense of our great state and it’s independence, in defense of your liberty, defending against those we once called our allies, our friends, our brothers. New England has betrayed us for their own gain, seeking to dismember our state out of false fear and the misbelief that New Jersey had been annexed into our state. Now they have invited the Frenchmen into the war, likely so they, once a friend of our own as well, may profit through the gain of our land! This war has raged on and I am heartbroken to say it must continue to do so until the invaders have been expelled and now it has become clear they can not maintain this war. While more men pour in to defend New York City, their own defense falters. Our brothers in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and now Maine will be avenged for the loss they have taken during our war.” President Vanderbilt would soon after return to New York City where he continued to lead the nation and aid in the war cause.

The Fraudulent War

Horace Greeley is requested to meet with President Vanderbilt to discuss the war, and write a piece on its origins and New England’s involvement. He calls for Greeley to discover the truth and make it known, as New England had all but abandoned New Jersey in the latest Peace Conference. It was clear with the invitation of foreign soldiers and disinterest in peace that New England had ulterior motives for this war rather than believing they were doing this for the independence of New Jersey as it had maintained its independence and New England seemed to even realize that. The piece written by Horace which is intended to criticize the New Englanders' cause for war would be published throughout America and Europe, hoping to show the world that New England and France were engaged in a war of imperialism in America, with no justification but their own gain and no reasonable end but the suffering of thousands of Americans.

The Central Intelligence Division

President Vanderbilt pushes for the passing of a bill to create an intelligence agency who could protect New York from such threats as New England in the future. They believe due to the close trade ties and existing relations the invasion should have been foreseeable and preventable with a proper intelligence agency and hope to prevent a similar situation from occurring in the future. The program enlists the aid of the Pinkerton Detective Agency to aid in the development of the Division, with a nice sum offered for such help.

ACTIONS

President Vanderbilt speaks in Albany proclaiming the liberation of upstate New York, and calling upon New Yorkers to remain hopeful and proud, for the enemy was on the defense. He also notes that France now had a stake in the war, and would likely attempt to establish a colony in their proud and free nation.

Horace Greeley is requested to investigate and publish a piece on the Northern War, hoping to shed light on the false justification used by New England to brutalize New Yorkers and their land. Vanderbilt cites their disinterest in New Jersey’s independence as well as their lack of interest in peace which shows that this war is motivated by imperialistic, or worse causes. Mr. Greeley’s findings would be widely published throughout the United States and Europe, and hopefully within New England where freedom of speech was still expected to exist and the widely known journalist’s reputation should be untarnished.

The Central Intelligence Division of New York is created in order to prevent surprise attacks such as the one which began the Northern War, as well as providing intelligence regarding enemy or potentially hostile nations and entities.

An additional ironclad is ordered as well as upgrades to the design of the ironclad.

New York uses the commandeered designs of Connecticut gunmakers to begin producing more weapons, as well as working to improve their own standard issue rifle.

The Republic of Asbury is offered further investments and funding into the industrial expansion of their state. It is hoped this can begin to replace some of the lost income from New York.

Work begins in Cape May, RA to begin improving the port. The hope is to divert New York City shipping to southern New Jersey for the duration of the war where cotton and other goods can begin being produced at newly opened factories in the state. Jobs are almost exclusively offered to residents of the Republic.

The Federal Empire of California - El Imperio Federal de California

Late 1863 and All of 1864

Population: ~850.000
Army Size: ~38.250

Imperial Friends:
With the war of French Intervention in Mexico over with a French success, and California having aided the victors, the Imperial government was eager to establish good relations with the new Mexican emperor, Maximilian von Habsburg. Therefore, Emperor Norton invited the upper classes of California and Mexico to a ball in his palace in San Francisco, to make his acquaintance with his new colleague, establish good relations between the two nations and invite them to sign a pact of economic partnership between the two nations, called “The two golden crowns of the West”.

Kalifornische Armee:
An envoy of the minister of foreign affairs and the minister of defense is sent to the Kingdom of Prussia to seek an audience with Wilhelm I and discuss options for military cooperation between the two nations, primarily the request for Prussian military advisors, drillmasters, quartermasters and professors to educate Californian generals. The goal is to reform the Californian army into one of Prussian organization and quality. What the Prussian Crown would want in return for this, is entirely negotiable.

Council of Old and New:
All Native American Chiefs that have opted to join the Empire of California, are invited to a summit in Sacramento. Here the so called “Council of Old and New” is established as a council between the Old and New Americans. This is to be chieftains’ primary way to discuss matters with the Imperial government, as for the most part, they are left to live in isolation from the rest of the Empire. Various matters are discussed though the main one is one of military concern, as the chieftains are requested to sign a bill that will form the “1st Native Cavalry Division”, which is to exist entirely out of Native American horsemen and expand the Californian army with thousands of men. The main argument for this request is that the Native Americans should help in protecting their new nation, one that has given them more freedom than they’ve ever experienced in the past century or so.

Industrializing the Frontier:
By far the biggest part of Government investments in this period is spend on the primary and secondary sectors of the Californian economy. Sizeable investments are given out to logging, mining and ranching companies, while even bigger investments are given out to industrial companies like kerosene and tar producers or manufacturers, not to be overlooked are the nation’s military and gun manufacturers in this section.
