The Second Interregnum

Spoiler

4E 837

During the Skyrim civil war, the Imperials had invested much into keeping the Nords under their control, yet a hardfought loss at Whiterun would put an end to their campaign. In turn resulting in the Treaty of Windhelm, effectively crippling the Empire. Soon after the Skyrim campaign, High Rock made bold demands of separation. A few tense encounters later, and said demands were accepted.

The Aldmeri Dominion faced a similar issue as the Bosmer rebellion in 4E 309 happened and ended in success. The Khajiit also declared independence after witnessing that their overlords could be beaten and just as the Bosmer won, the Khajiit did too. Both of the rebellious puppet states caused the Altmer to once again take a stance of isolationism, where they now fight and squabble amongst each other for power in the Summerset Isles.

In the south the Argonian Kingdom invaded Morrowind viciously taking land and slaves. They then turned their attention to the now weakened Cyrodiil who were still humiliated by their defeats. The Argonians launched attack after attack seizing land along the border. Seeing their time to shine, the Nords, Bosmer, Dunmer, and Khajiit launched simultaneous attacks. Cyrodiil desperate to not be demolished got their act together assembling a colossal army. The Imperial forces delivered decisive blows to each of their invading neighbors forcing one after another to sue for peace but to immediately end all fighting the territories taken were allowed to be kept by the invaders.

After years of defeat and disgrace the Imperials tried again to conquer Skyrim and parts of Hammerfell with their colossal crusading force. The initial strike was devastating and all was looking good for the Imperials until the King of Skyrim himself led an ambush forcing an Imperial retreat. What then ensued was infighting, officers bickering over control and decision making, the campaign was halted. It did not take long before the colossal Imperial army dispersed. A long period of relative peace reigned over Tamriel lasting near five hundred years. During this time the Kingdom of Skyrim dissolved, the Argonians fractured, Hammerfell split apart and chunks were taken by the Imperials, the Orcs in Highrock fled to their mountains where they formed the Orcish Kingdom, and though the Empire was weakened it reorganized into the Imperial Confederation.

Grand Duchy Of Kvatch

Marcus sat in the great hall in front of his family, bannermen, merchants, and other important peoples. The room was lit with chatter and drinking until Marcus banged on the table in front of him three times silencing the large number of people. “We are gathered here to discuss the future of our people that have been here for eras. The Empire is no longer around ladies and gentlemen and it appears that the heartlanders are as useless as the Nibenese!” The hall erupted with cheering laughter. “First I will ride to Colovian holds and seek out a wife and other alliances. While I am gone men will be needed to form a legion. This legion will be our way of conquest and I already have my eyes on lands ripe for the taking. Enough of me talking! Enjoy yourselves! I am tired and will retire to my chambers. I bid you farewell.” As he left a musician began playing Red Diamond and the hall soon resumed it’s laughter and drinking.

The next morning he was awoken by all three of his little sisters storming into his room jumping on his bed and shouting. Their intrusion was met with a disgruntled look from Marcus. Although he was the lord of Kvatch now, they acted like he wasn’t their lord brother and nothing had changed. Nonetheless they had awoken him for the days trials which would not be easy. After throwing them out of his room, he donned a modest set of clothing and walked to his study where he started writing up letters. The first letter was an extensive list of soldiers that needed to be raised with haste. The second was a set of letters sent out to all Colovian holds that he would be in need of a wife, and is planning on visiting some of the holds if that were alright. And the third and final set of letters were to some of the same holds asking for trade agreements.

Activity:

Jarl Oskar had only recently taken the throne of Windhelm though he had yet to take a seat in it since his ascension. It was, at last, the day into the early winter seasons that Oskar had called for a court with the people of his city. Many requests were simple, such as the dealings with thieves and bandits due to the harsh winter bearing down on them, though some were considerable like the impending shortage of food due to lack of trade into the city.

The Jarl took into account each of these issues, before dismissing his subjects to their daily tasks once more. He had called several members of his newly appointed council and assigned their duties. The Marshall, Olaf Thvarjsson, had been tasked with assigning patrols throughout the city to keep the criminals at bay with the recently recruited soldiers, as well as designate new leaders for both the infantry and archers. His final order was to, by the end of the year, find a suitable class of soldiers that would be candidates to become Housecarls to the Jarl.

The master of coin was to send each surrounding nation a request of trade, as well as deal with all foreign affairs relating to the intake and sending of goods and resources. He had made a point of the roads being stable, though the docks had been dwarfed in size since the war had closed. It would be dealt with.

The master of speech had dispatched several elders south, to the Rift, in order to better relations with the bountiful and lush holding.

The Kingdom of Rihad

TcyIsrl.jpg

Haserick sat in his throne room, contemplating what course of action he should take. He had only recently come to power into his position and defeated the usurper that had tried to take his family’s lands. However, due to retaking his birthright most of the army was in disarray and had been scattered as well as weakened. Thus he needed to build up the military of the nation once more. To make sure it was safe from both threats inside and outside of the realm. Considering that his domain was bordered by two imperial duchies it was important he could defend himself in case of any attacks. However, he also needed men to control the countryside.

Bandits were always notorious and would always rise up at the first signs of weakness. Thus he needed a strong military to crush any bandits already in his lands as well as discouraging any other peasants from taking up the job of a thug. Inevitably he would also need to improve the lot of the citizens and peasants but that was later in the future. A realm first needed to be able to defend itself and it’s citizenry before it could attend to the wishes of the citizens.

Haserick mind then drifted off to the quality of troops. During the battle to retake Rihad from the usurper he had noticed that his troops did not have enough organisation. They were mostly led by uneducated sergeants who did not have the skills neccesary to make the force fight effective. Thus he would need to train better officers in order to properly lead his troops. Thus Haserick called for a meeting with his closest advisors and explained his plans and ordered them to be executed as he desired.

The Rift

In the absence of young Carsten, Skegglund would oversee most business in the Rift. With the Holds bountiful resources it was far past time to start putting the many goods of the Rift on the market, and so riders were sent with offers to the nearby Holds and Duchies.

Leaving the city with some gold, a horse, weapons and basic tools for life on the road. The young Jarl would travel around the Rift, speaking to its people taking any job within reason. Be it from Highwaymen, Wolves or any other nuisance that plagues his Hold. Carsten improving his martial prowess slowly throughout the year would be making a small name of himself.

With the cities guard practically in ruin, it was time to rebuild the defense of the Riften, Soldiers would be recruited trained and sent on their duties throughout the city. Stomping out crime where ever it came up, and considering it's the thieves capital of Skyrim, there was always stomping needing doing.

Quintus Scipio Nasica looked out from the Ducal Palace, over Leyawiin and out across the Niben. One his side was a bustling, wealthy city. On the other was a disused, foreign-occupied swamp. On his side was civilisation, on the other was chaos. On his side was Cyrodiil. On the other were the Argonians. The Republic of which he was Dux was lacking in farmlands while the lizards across the Niben wasted the good land they had stolen from Cyrodiil. It was intolerable, and Quintus would see the status quo broken.

The raising of a great host was going to be key to this endeavour. The swamp of the Blackwood would likely hinder heavy troops, and so the recruitment of a lighter, more flexible force would be necessary. Quintus takes a bill for military expansion to the Senate, giving an impassioned speech about the recovery of Cyrodiil for the Imperial peoples. After some deliberation and debate the patricians of Leyawiin are swayed, and agree to the formation of the Leyawiin Legion. In all, 7,000 Light Infantry, 6,000 Archers, and 1,000 Light Cavalry would begin training and their equipment produced in this first year.

Furthermore, scouting parties are dispatched into the Blackwood to attempt to identify the location and size of the Stonewastes’ forces.

Meanwhile, the need for trade with fellow Imperial states was evident, especially given the mercantile nature of the Republic. Dispatches are sent to Kvatch and Cheydinhal asking for free trade agreements. An agreement is reached with the Khajiit city of Torval. It was important to continue to build up the economic power and reach of the Republic even while the military was the focus.

Additionally, a petition for a defensive alliance with the Duke of Cheydinhal was made. The pressure from Nords, Argonians, and Dark Elves who sully Cyrodiil with their occupation was impressed upon the Duke, as well as the need for co-operation between Imperials being of peak necessity.

The Imperial Confederation was dying, Marcus Linius, Grand-Duke of Cheydinhal noted. There was no companionship or real kinship between the states of Cyrodiil. And their supposed leader, those Heartlander scoundrels, just sat in their Imperial City doing nothing. Such incompetence and inability needed to end, but first a century old problem needed to be addressed.

Swathes of rightful Imperial, Cheydinhal land was under foreign and alien occupation; Dunmer, Nord and Argonian each held a slice. There would need to be repercussions for such unlawful and unethical oppression, but first the land needed to be reclaimed. Legions would be raised to do this; like those of old, Cheydinhal would have it’s vengeance and rightful land. A missive would be sent to the imperial city inquiring about the cost of purchasing two of the border provinces to whiterun held Brumen land.

The envoy that had been sent by the Merchant Republic of Leyawiin was received with courtesy and respect, the Duke listened to his petition thoughtfully. Beckoning him away with his answer; that Cheydinhal would stand together with Leyawiin against any future threat and would also aid them in any future wars provided that the Republic did the same. Trade was also agreed upon.

Traders would be sent to Senchel and the Imperial City as well, to begin filling the Dukes coffers. He also took council with his advisers on the political situation in Morrowind, Argonia and Skyrim. Requests were also sent all across Cyrodiil for marriage pacts. After all this business had been attended to, the Duke took personal charge of the organisation of the first Cheydinhal legion. Agents were sent into Oreleth and Stormhold to discover their alliances and their attitudes with their fellow nations. 500 Septims were invested into the docks near Cropsford.

The Kingdom of Senchel

Kiseni stood at the ports of Senchel, admiring the waves and the ships that were leaving in the setting sun. He looked around and sighed the once great trading city had seen better days. He wanted to grow and expand the reach of his people’s caravans.

But that investment would come in time, protection of these caravans and the protection of the Kingdom was at the top of the list. His diplomats had already set out towards Leyawiin, with the goal of purchasing back territory from the Merchant Republic. The other terms to sweeten the deal were hidden away from the public eyes.

As he sat down and looked upon the ocean waves crashing against the pier, he looked towards the moons. Bowing his head in pray, wishing for protection in this troubling time. To guide him to the riches his empire deserved.

X=====][  Kingdom of Orsinium  ][=====X

So it was that Agrum, son of Garthag, ascended to his throne in the Great Keep of Orsinium to hold court once more. Much had been accomplished in the reign of his father, and much more had been consolidated so far by Agrum. The clans and strongholds of Wrothgarian and eastern High Rock had either willingly sworn to the resurgent Orsimer state, or had been brought to heel by force. The Code of Malacath was absolute – strength ruled, and Orsinium had demonstrated its undisputed mastery of its territory and vassals. The great king’s mind turned to other matters. For the first time in over a thousand years, Orsinium stood as a strong independent nation, not shackled to an Empire in Cyrodiil, a Dominion in Summerset, or to the whims of the jealous kings of the Bretons or Redguards. No. Now was the time to build a kingdom that would never again by divided and conquered by its foes. No more would the Orsimer be maligned as a barbarous servant race. The sons and daughters of Malacath would never again be scattered to the winds. This land was theirs, and Orsinium would never again be sundered by the fearful outsiders.

To safeguard the kingdom, Agrum decreed the creation of a new Grand Army of Orsinium, an expansion of his own clan’s forces independent of any stronghold or tribal affiliations, sworn to the state of Orsinium and its King alone.

Golden Kingdom of Aurion

the_elder_scrolls__flag_of_the_aldmeri_d

Athaere marched her way through the training yards, scores of recruits and soldiers training and preparing. “How soon can they be ready to be sent out?” she looked to the armored elf behind her “Within the year your grace.”

Martial Adus glanced over the troops “This is quite the demand you have going for me, to raise such an army in a short time.” he comments, she nods “I have full confidence in your ability to do as I asked Martial, if you’ll excuse me I have a meeting with the rest of the council.” she turns walking off from the yard.

Barthir let out a sigh as he sat at the table, the only Bosmer in the room as he listened to the others argue back and forth.

“Diplomacy has no place here at this moment Aelsinire, I understand your position but it's useless.” A darker robed Atlmer would comment.

“Diplomacy is ALWAYS an option Vianmir, just because backstabbery isn’t in my nature doesn’t mean I’m any less an asset to this council.”

“Your place on this council is because Queen Athaere sees you as useful down the road-..”

“For the love of Auri’El can you both just stuff it?!” Barthir speaks up, the two men glare at the Bosmer. “Perhaps you’d watch your mouth Sagelock..remember who you are in the presence of.” Vianmir would sneer.

“And the lot of you should all remember who you are in the presence of.” A man in a white and gold robe would speak walking along Queen Athaere, the group would stand quickly and bow.

“Now that all of that is out of the way..We can get this started..” She’d smile.

Archduchy of Camlorn

Silus’ arrival was met with mixed feelings of the populace. There were many in doubt of his capabilities, some concerned about his heritage, others hopeful that he might be the one who will bring new glory and prosperity to the shattered Breton realms, and few that were merely clinging on to the old Archduke’s heritage, which they saw living on in Silus. Considering he does look like a young version of his father, aged nineteen.

Silus surprised everyone with his first order as the new Archduke. Raising an army. And he spent much of the treasury to do exactly that. The noble families and other prominent people of the realm let him do, knowing that they were safe, should any adventure of the young Lord fail and that they were the first to strike a deal with the new foes.

The next action would be a letter of interest towards all surrounding holdings and realms, that he himself, Silus, was looking for a maiden’s hand in marriage. Given also the prospect of trade and a potential alliance of course.

The Interregnum:

Grand Duchy of Kvatch:

The Grand Army of Kvatch expands with it’s new recruitments. Over 11,000 men and women enlist into the army. Completing their training by the end of the year. A majority of these troops are young men, having seen little to no combat in their lives. Although they may be green, these troops are ready for anything the gods may throw at them.

All envoys return from their assignments with wonderful news, Anvil, Chorral and Leyawiin have all accepted the proposal for trade. Caravans from these nations begin their journey to Kvatch. However the roads are not safe anymore. Ever Since the collapse of the Empire, highwayman and bandits plague these traders. The merchants of Kvatch plead for Marcus to deploy troops to protect the trade routes.

Marcus returns to Kvatch with a new bride, Iyria. She is the sister of the Grand Duke Arminius Horanis, the leader of the Grand Duchy of Chorrol. This causes an alliance to form between the two nations, as their dynasties become closer.

Any caravans trying to enter Kvatch are stopped and searched, already a large skooma ring has been discovered and dealt with. As well as many smugglers and thieves trying to pose as merchants and traders.

Jarldom of Windhelm:

The Windhelm Dockyards experience a large renovation. With this expansion the volume of goods entering Windhelm is nearly doubled. Which increases economic stimulation. Trade agreements with The Pale, Rift and Orsinium are accepted. (+1,000 Septims per turn)

A garrison force is made, from the local men and woman in Windhelm and the surrounding villages. With this force Oskar begins to survey the ranks to find any potential candidates for his force of Huscarls.

The Kingdom of Rihad:

Men and woman from across the Kingdom join the ever growing army. Many of them becoming palace guards and skirmishers. The construction of a military begins, by the end of the year the basic facilities are built and instruction can begin. However an investment this small may not provide the adequate results that King Hasericks was hoping for.

All envoys return with good news, Wayrest, Sentinel and Hegathe accept their offers for trade. However only Sentinel has suitable consorts for marriage. Leaving Haserick with few options.

Jarldom of the Rift:

Carsten leaves Riften at the age of 16, a baby-faced boy who has little to no experience. His first few encounters allow him to gain the combat experience he needs. After a few more adventures he sets on a quest to explore the disappearances of some villagers. Entering the cave he has run ins with dangerous were-beast. A werebear attacks Carsten and almost kills him, the beast mauls him and nearly leave him dead if it were not for a traveling mage healing Carsten’s wounds.

He then continues on his journey, ending up in Whiterun by the end of the year, now 17 he still has much to learn. Meanwhile in Riften Skegglund begins recruitment of an army to protect Riften’s territories in Cyrodiil and Skyrim. A main bulk of these troops are Nords, however a few Imperials volunteer. A majority of them becoming Skirmishers and archers.

All trade deals are accepted.

Merchant Republic of Leyawiin:

Scouts tell of a force of 10,000 being assembled near the Cyrodiil border. Many of the senate doubt these number, believing that the argonians only have a meager force of 5,000. However scouts also report forces of imperials being pressed into Argonian service.

Trade caravans come in from Kvatch and Senchal, boosting the Merchant Republic’s economy.

Grand Duchy of Cheydinhal:

Imperial city agrees to the trade agreement that Cheydinhal proposes, however they state clearly that they are not willing to sell the two border provinces to Cheydinhal. Agents send a report that the Dunmer are raising an army about 10,000 strong. The exact makeup of this force is unknown.

The agent in Stormhold reports that their base of operations have been discovered and they have been forced out of the capital city of Stormhold for the time being. The Harlun swatch docks are constructed by the end of the year. Prepared for whatever the crown needs of them.

The Kingdom of Senchal:

A massive harbor is built allowing for an immense amount of imports and exports. Stimulating the Senchal economy and promoting business growth as well as an influx of foriegn merchants buying Khajiiti goods. (+1,000 Septims per turn.)

All trade offers are accepted and soon caravans from these realms begin to enter Senchal, however many of them are attacked by bandits and brigands. One bandit group call themselves the Ghosts of the Sands they are known for taking no prisoners and killing everybody in the caravan, sending their decapitated corpses to Senchal.

Kingdom of Elsweyr:

The economy of Elsweyr grows, giving boosts to taxes and production. (+1,000 Septims.)

Kingdom of Orsinium:

Troops are recruited and garrisoned around Orsinium. This year was simply uneventful for the orcs.

Kingdom of Aurion:

Troops are recruited, men and women are ready for the eventual reunification war against the Kingdom of Auridon. Other than that, not much happens in the Summerset Isles.

Archduchy of Camlorn:

Troops are recruited and finish their training by the end of their year. Along with investments to the economy and envoys returning with a list of potential consorts to the Archduke not much happens.

World Events:

Not much happens in the world, for now, there seems to be peace in all corners of Tamriel. However tensions rise, soon all it may take is a spark to set the world aflame.
