CITIES AT SEA

“My father would be rolling in his grave -- were he to know we have ceded control of the oceans to the Pinoys and Ladyboys…” remarked the Chief of the Maritime Staff, Nobusuke Ozawa.

He was met with a collection of stifled, quiet chuckles. Around him were much of Japan’s upper brass of the ‘self-defense forces’. Much of them were aged men, stern and stoic in their devotion to the Emperor. While they may have not have appreciated Ozawa’s joke, he was relieved to find that some still had humor left within them.

They gathered around a long rectangular table among the skyrises of Tokyo. The chamber was buried deep within the building, hidden from any outdoor view, illuminated through dim lamps hanging from the surface.  Discreet and secure.

From the end of the room, a decorated individual cleared his throat, visibly unamused. He was wrinkled from head to toe, though clad in all manners of medals and honors upon his breast. From the opposite of the table sounded the Minister of Defense, “I concur, teitoku. As an island nation, a naval force is a paramount asset to ensure the safety of Japan. We have brooded much over the past decades and learned immeasurable amounts. It is time to reinvoke the Imperial Navy..”

“And to do that, we must first achieve parity with the Pan-Pacific…” stated another admiral.

“And we’ll not end there, I presume?” inquired the Chief of Maritime Staff.

“No. We will overcome -- no expense shall be spared.”

“Which is why I propose to expand our carrier fleet to ten vessels, Sato-kakka. From there we can truly project power over the Pacific.”

The weathered Defense Minister merely smirked, leaning back in his reclining chair. He appeared most pleased, and as he sank it became ever more apparent that his garbs would soon no longer fit him. “Then, we are in agreement. Arrangements will be made post-haste.”

THE ARMS EXPO

Rumors circulate that many investors, scientists, engineers, and CEOs of Japan’s chief manufacturing corporations were invited to an arms expo in an undisclosed location in Japan. In the event, many ideas were exchanged, and new technologies were unveiled and put on display. In an act by the Japanese government, they had hoped to inspire ‘friendly’ competition between the domestic arms industries of Japan and beyond. The Japanese government were eager to see what they would come up with, having promised these arms industries very lucrative and potentially long-term agreements. Naturally, many of these developers lept at the opportunity and pounced at the drawing board, and immediately began fronting their designs.

In attendance, were several corporations international corporations and nearly all of Japan’s; such as the Mitsubishi Group, Howa, Sumitomo, Kawasaki Heavy Engineering. Mitsubishi Heavy Engineering unveiled a new replacement for Japan’s main battle tank, supposedly designated as the Type 13. Meanwhile, Japan Steel Works had developed the new 130mm cannon said to be mounted on the vehicle. In terms of handheld weaponry, Howa and other firearms producers presented their submission for new assault rifles; whispers circulate saying that the new Howa rifle will enter service as the Type 136 in the coming years. On the other hand, Minebea and Sumitomo fought for the attention of the upper brass of ground staff with their new squad automatic rifle designs. However, what caught the eye of many attendees was the project that Mitsubishi General Robotics had been toiling with for the past year; the MAID or Multi-role Autonomous Infantry Drone. It was evident that the unit was very much still in prototype stages, yet it opened a whole door of possibility of adding automation to the Japanese armed forces and in a literal sense, mechanized infantry.

PROCESSION IN TOKYO

Citizens from the home islands to those afar flock to the streets of Tokyo to gaze upon a military parade throughout the city. It is a clear, sunny day, with rows of people stretched out as far as the eye can see. A main avenue is cordoned off by local law enforcement, stemming the tide of many ecstatic and patriotic Japanese citizens. Ever vigilant remain the gendarmerie and police forces, establishing makeshift tape and barricades along the sidewalks. It was within no time that the Emperor arrived, assuming a secure and elevated position overlooking the route of the parade. Shortly after, the soldiers and vehicles had come into sight. As a rhythmic tapping of steps marching to the beat proceeded down the length of the road, the band harkened back to previous glories of the Japanese militaries with melodies such as Yuki No Shingun and the March of Tsushima. As the soldiers marched, clad in their Flecktarn fatigues, rifles propped, snapped to attention, with intrinsically sharp steps, the Rising Sun flag flew proudly over their heads. The local times and news outlets had much to say regarding the symbolic display of Japan’s re-emergence onto the world stage. A few brows were raised but were mostly suppressed, many welcomed this new change in Japan’s view. A sense of pride, and purpose washed over the minds of many.

The Jade Corps

In early 2037, a more than interesting company emerges from China, entering the worldstage. Known as the Jade Corps, they are a private military group. Boasting some of the most technologically advanced and mechanized forces on the world supplemented with contracted veteran chinese military officers from the Civil War period it is a more than capable force. The Corps publicly issues a statement offering their services to world governments and organizations alike.

To the public, the Corps was nothing more than the latest in private military companies, however there was far more to it. The corps, founded in close cooperation with the Chinese Government in Tianjin was more a tool than anything. An anonymous and neutral extension of the Government’s power. It was completely funded by the Chinese armed forces. Of course, this was a closely guarded secret only the highest echelons of the government would know about.

Hong Kong Military Expo

The Armed forces, constantly searching for new technologies and innovations hosts a military expo in Hong Kong, a historic hub for commerce and business. The expo would invite foreign and domestic companies alike, asking them to present recent research, prototypes, anything that might be of interest to the armed forces. To incentivise these companies, large military contracts are offered to companies that present worthwhile material.

Chinese Space Program

Among the other events throughout the ever active China, the government has sought renewed interest in the long neglected Space Program. Compared to her contemporaries, China was leagues behind even North Korea! In 2037, Portions of the Government’s budget bigger than the entire DPRK’s economy is allocated to this program!

Federated States of Ellada

On the outskirts of Istanbul, fighting has reached a standstill. Fortified lines sit only a few hundred meters from one another. On the home front, the bay is littered with broken ships, either resting peacefully at the bottom of the Mediterranean or floating as smoking ghost ships. The town of Kalmata is brutally contested, but the Egyptians are surrounded but slowly being reinforced by Turkish infantry. The rural areas surrounding the coastal sections of route 82 are now a strenuously held Egyptian beachhead.

Meanwhile, at factories inland, the Greek airforce has been completed and new men have been trained. Helicopters and passenger ships swiftly transport 2,500 Hoplites and 10,000 men to a coastal town outside of Istanbul known as Avcilar, escorted by fighters and gunships. Another 1,000 Hoplites are rushed to the Greco-Turk front through Greek occupied territory, as well as 5,000 infantry. Said infantry bring with them the new laser technology- stationary machine guns. All men on the Greco-Turk front prepare to charge within the year, hopefully in unison with the assault on Aviclar to regroup and storm the city. The remaining 5,000 infantry and 1,500 hoplites are sent to Kalmata to push into the city, their assault preceded by several bombing runs. Hellenic minutemen meanwhile resupply the line near route 82 with said Laser Heavy Machine Guns (LHMGs) for defensive purposes.

Meanwhile, the Greek warmachine continues to churn out troops and ships with a passion.

===Nation Post===

Federated States of Ellada -

All military construction goes as planned as the Industrial base of Greece still remains unharmed from the hellish nightmare at its borders.

The battles are expected to continue in earnest this year.

Republic of China -

All construction for the years be it military or civilian goes well and continues and or finishes on schedule, the fighters engineers hope are not too much longer off.

Much like Japan’s expo, Turkey appears and seeks to look at the technology that China is offering. They also seek to discuss a deal about the Jade Corps...

DPRK -

The military station now floats proudly in orbit with North Koreans running up and down the atmosphere. Alongside this the meager NK space fleet is completed giving them a whole new field of warfare to prepare for.

Empire of Japan -

The South Koreans politely decline the offer citing the power struggle already existing with their northern neighbor, they seek to remain neutral in the matter.

Iwo Jima receives its fortifications with the old inhabitants there being reminded of the old glory days of World War 2, modern knowledge works upon the old with bunkers being placed with even more camouflage everywhere.

The Australians decline having already placed a base of their own there coupled with a small flotilla of ships.

Clamor for safer batteries leads scientist to draw up a theory of a Fusion battery, a cleaner and much more efficient version of the Fission one. It’s also much, much safer given the fact that it won’t leak or explode and give nearby users cancer within the first year.

Few nations attend this year as peace has been proactively at the forefront of many nations, Turkey however does appear looking to bolster their forces with new technologies.

Polish Republic -

The successful finish of the the next generation combat vehicles, tanks and APCS received the most attention with armor being improved and fixed to reduce heat signatures, their speed being amped up with fission power plants.

All military units are completed and so are their opponents as the Bulgarians and Lithuanians are seen enforcing their border with a plenitude of troops.

The Bohemian State-

The prospectors hired out by the government find a vein of naturally occurring Graphene.

All military recruitment and construction is finished and put onto active duty.

German Republic-

All recruitment and construction is completed for this year, eagerly the German men deploy to their assignments adding much needed youth to the military.

((Phasic or plasma???))

USSR-

The OSS Program continues in earnest and its progress goes well with military officials having it completely structured by the end of the year.

Great effort eventually leads the Russians to establish a safely orbiting Hydroponics station filled to the brim with seeds and eager workers assigned on monthly rotations, seasons would never affect the plants here and year-long growth would be guaranteed.

The Russian space fleet grows this year with the two corvettes being celebrated by the people as a new era of Russian progress.

===Events===

The Brazil-Latin war ends in a stalemate with the total casualties in military measuring at 67,000 men and its civilians at 235,000. A great waste of life with no gain, both nations send aid to each other.

The ODI is seen developing a new class of warship after finishing construction of its new shipyard, the first destroyers and assault ships. These ships are soon to be some of the largest to ever be fielded by a corporation let alone nation, intelligence officials state they’re most likely preparing for something with the missile platforms being tested and reloaded daily.

Anterior coalition forces announce the unveiling of wide-spread titanium armor with videos now circulating worldwide of tanks being hit by modern weaponry with previous penetrating rounds simply bouncing off their tanks.

2039

With operation Slavic endurance ending in tragic failure, plan B was enacted. The Polish military are given their battle plans and situated along the border of Lithuania and Belarus. Most armored vehicles with their new chassis along with airplanes are mobilized. No time is wasted as tanks, APCs, and troop transports zoom towards the border singing songs of conquest and heroism. There is much blood to be shed, and the Polish intend on it being their neighbors. Bohemia is notified of the massive mobilization and they are urged to join the fighting in the name of Visegrad. A trial for the newly trained and anxious men of the Republic.

In the name of progress a research facility is constructed with many more planned in the near future. The main target of research for the government after tackling armored vehicles is infantry equipment, specifically kinetics.

Japanese cruisers present at the Battle of Tsushima, c. 1905

At last, it would seem that the Japanese rearmament would not be in vein. With the declaration of war against China, the fleets were placed on high alert, dragged away from their fruitless patrol duties to waters around the Korean peninsula. Intelligence knew not of the location of any Korean or their allied Russian ships, though many of the naval staff suspecting nothing short of a crushing victory as in the Battle of Tsushima some century ago.

Flight crews were on standby. Several craft littered the tarmac that made up the top decks of Japan’s floating cities. Meanwhile, guided missiles were prepped in the launch tubes of cruisers, and destroyers trained their gun on the same bearing -- toward the Korean peninsula. Aircraft were quickly scrambled in the face of impending attack at any moment, doing multiple runs around the battle groups.

The time to strike was nigh.

THE EMPEROR SPEAKS

The Emperor was the very symbol of Japan. Japan would not exist without an Emperor. The Nippon Kaigi had successfully restored the role to its former influence, and the Emperor shirked not from his duties. No longer is he merely a symbol but at the forefront of the nation’s very politics. Now, he would offer a speech to the people of Japan over the current state of affairs and Japan’s wartime policy.

My humble subjects,

I regret to inform you of this terrible news. The People’s Republic of Korea has declared war upon our sacred nation, backed by their Russian overlords. It has come as a surprise to us all. They attempt to destroy the goal of unity and prosperity between Asian brethren, demanding we absolve our alliance with the Chinese. To that I say, we will not be bullied into submission. The Empire of Japan bows to none.

Evidently shown through history, our people are warriors. We will adapt and overcome as always. The entirety of Korea and much of the far reaches of the Pacific once felt the weight of our boot. I decree that all loyal citizens of Japan show them why that once was. Japan will not be trifled with. That is why I ask every one of my beloved subjects to do their role and aid in the war effort; be it through enlisting or taking up various jobs on the homefront.

We are reborn anew. The Sun rises over the East once more.

“In response to the North Korean conflict with the China and Japan, the Motherland must answer it’s honored treaty with our fellow comrades! The Asian Axis push hostility and militarism unto the world, they must not be allow such domination in Asia!”

“As such the entire wrath of the Soviet People’s will come down upon China and Japan like a hammer upon an Anvil. This war will require more than the brave soldiers already serving the cause, so we ask that any true son or daughter of the Motherland head to the nearest recruitment center and join the fight!”

With global conflicts heating up, the USSR has chosen to engage China and Japan. As if China wasn’t already meddling in Turkish/Greek affairs now it seems war was a requirement to keep the would be giant in check.

The Russian Army and Airforce work in tandem as they deploy to the Chinese border to begin an immediate invasion of Chinese lands. They are ordered to show no mercy to any resistance, and any attempts are to be met with unyielding fury.
