Following the defeat of the Symon army near Arris, Lord Dunwick has been recalled in disgrace to the capital of Loswarn. However, it is said that he may be too unwell to even be seen by the Emperor, to answer for his great failures. In his stead, emperor Almeric IV has sent Lord Gerroth Veryn, a well established noble from the court, and Dunwick’s long time rival. As such, the front is quiet, though murmurs of troops marching for Ischyros are heard throughout the land.

In the far east, it seems that the nations have earned themselves a reprieve from the bloody mist that hangs so often upon their shores, like a vicious limpet. No village is slaughtered, no ships are destroyed. Indeed, it almost seems as if they vanished into thin air.

The Eadni win another decisive naval battle, soundly defeating the fledling and renewed Mongerellian navy. It is said that the governesse of Monger, Captain Lu’Uma has been slain at sea by the champion of the Danwent Oympics and his crew, Abu Ibn’Bakir. A crushing blow, to be sure, as they take control of yet more islands in the hand. Yet the Mongerellians continue to maintain a firm control of their own lands, despite making no real gains.

The West is shifted by a monumental change. Xian Wa, Queen of the Xian Kingdom of the past 70 years has finally died, in her sleep, at peace. Her funeral procession will pass through every tier of the city, and her body shall be burned in front of a small temple on the lowest level. An unspeakable honor for the priests of said temple, and a vicious insult to those who maintain the royal churches. But those are her requests, and none would dare to defy Xian Wa, even in death. As she dies, so does Xian Lao take  her throne. A young man of the third social strata, he is certain to shake up the established rules and stagnant customs of the Xian.

As with every year before this one, the Bloated Throats renew their offensive, pouring more bodies into the churning death machine on the Ashval border. Every year it spits out more bones and rotting bodies, and every year, the Bloated Throats dump more into it.

After the devastating Field of Tears, both the Hakkan and the Karel take a breather. A moment of respite as envoys travel the land, seeking a solution before another such devastating battle rips through the land. Though some fires have been struck along the edges of Hakkan the Undying, Chosen of God and Master of the Skies’ realm, acts of small bands of Karel raiders.

In the city of Slatewater, upon the Symon coast, the scholars spouting their nonsense ideas about democracy have even formed some sort of party! Though not spoken of in such blatant terms. They have modified their previous name to the “Assembly for Republican Debates,” and hold public forums on the market place. Even fishermen can express their ideas, and be heard! Many nobles are scandalized, but Emperor Almeric IV remains far too focused on his war to concern himself with such matters, it seems.

The Republic of Danwent

Aywentos and Liber thus find themselves welcome most happily into Distro’s home, where scholars of all walks of life give them a position of honor at their tables and within their debates, listening with raptuous attention to their teachings. Most of them seem quite honest in their intentions, though their patron, Lord Distro, seems a little less than pleased with their presence. Certainly, their presence attracts quite a few more people to the debates, as does their gold and added patronage.

The mountains around their new chosen settlement are rough, and nigh impassable, cutting off much of the land that the settlers had hoped to claim. Nonetheless, they do find some open fields, especially along the coast, adjacent to their old borders. A disappointments, perhaps, but land is land.

And so the men of Danwent find themselves upon the landbridge, just south of the Passan. Surely, there is more to see!

The Auldhauan Hierarchy of Melda

Construction and recruitment. It seems that the isles of Melda are a teeming hive of activity, though little news of it crosses the sea and ventures onto the continent. Their colonies remain the small, but prosperous enclaves they have been for years, with little more expansion beyond that.

However, in the far north, more children have gone missing, taken in the night by an unknown force. None are found, and no one is ever hurt or killed, yet it remains a most curious incident that spawns dozens of tales and spreads fear in the rural regions of Melda.

The Fortress Libraries

The Symon Empire seems to have no real issue with the tardy envoy, but accept the gold nonetheless. They appear to be cordial with the Librarians, though not openly friendly. Indeed, it seems as if they consider them to be quiet the normal foreigners, all things concerned.

Tridents are really just three different choices along a shifting path. (Discord)

Medical research continues, and it goes most excellently! In fact, one may even dare to say that the Librarians are the leading experts in medicine throughout all of Naros. Most impressive. Who would have thought that mercury was a deadly substance!

In Ashval, the situation is far less joyous. War, constant death. Long-lasting suffering. The Boated Throats attack once more, in all places, raiders swarming into villages and devouring people in their beds. But one force gathers and grows like an infection, and the paltry Ashval army and its Librarian helpers stand in its way. (Discord)

The Kingdom of Numeria

Moral shoots for the roof after the Battle of Arris. Aemyr is hailed throughout the Kingdom, and once again, Lucius Blackmarrow sends a missive to congratulate him on his determination, and continued victories. He assures Aemyr that his men will stay until the end of the war, and encourages him forward. As he says, “The enemy has many faces.”

Beyond that, with the victory, Numeria now has an open path to Ischyros, where the Symon army is gathering its forces once again, throwing men into the ranks whether they want to or not. The war is not over yet, but the tide may yet turn.

Surya

The people of Sekh are hard-faced and lean. From their accounts, it seems that they were keepers of an ancient city who were attacked by foreigners from the mountains in the north. They claim that these foreigners slaughtered women and children, and ejected them from their sacred lands, sending them through the deadly desert of fire and stone, to these shores. The horrors of their trip are manifested in their low numbers and hollow eyes, but they seem happy enough to trade, though they have precious little to offer but fish and stone.

A trip with many an eventful encounter! (Discord)

More buildings, like decorations upon a golden statue. Truly, it hurts to look upon Surya. In the daytime, its brilliance blinds those who might be fortunate to sail past it.

The Commonwealth of Ruhn

The Island settlement is not a pleasant place to live. Though it is quite isolated, so it may attract quite a few dreary Ruhnmen with a interest in solitude, grey rocks, grey seas and grey weather. Who knows! The other settlement is established in a small, green plot of land next to the Loba river. While long, the river is easy enough to control thanks to its wide waters.

Finally, with many workers under their command, and much more gold to throw against the unyielding levers, some results trickle back to the Commonwealth. A group of workers broke through a thick stone wall and found some of the inner mechanisms! Though old and rusted in many parts, this will no doubt offer huge insight into their functioning. Perhaps the scholars can breathe a sigh of relief, and lay off the Alex Jones™ pills.

A random encounter, up in the mountains! (Discord)

Mystery solving? (Discord)

The scholars quite simply find nothing that the Swinemen had not found beforehand.

The Antigonid Dynasty

Both the Eadni and the Mongerellians accept the trade offer, though trade with the Mongerellians is restricted to land trade, as they are quite incapable of fielding a merchant fleet with the Eadni attacking and raiding any ship flying one of their banners.

The Empire of Bourdeleaux

Recruitment and war, the fuel of the nation.

Though the priests of the Bright One still claim to feel some sense of distance, their fervor has been renewed by the news of Adrian’s fall, and they claim that the Bright One feels closer than before. As if the sacrifice turned his eye back upon the people of Bourdeleaux.

The Duchy of Ulyadar

Bruce the Red seems no smarter or wiser than before. Indeed, his emotions seems to fluctuate like fire, jarring him from though to thought, and leaving him more impulse and restless than before. But GODS is he strong, surpassing other man by a few factors in speed and strength. Many wounds do not linger upon his body, melting back into seamless flesh easily.

A new settlement, its surroundings similar to its neighbor in most ways. However, as explorers venture north, they find themselves in a curious place. These islands are barren of all life, they find no birds, no penguins, no seals, no fish in the sea, and the longer the explorers linger, the more they find themselves growing paranoid of each other, their boats, and the land itself. An unsettling place.

The trade offer is refused by the Mongerellians, who learned of Ulyadar raiding practices, and have no wish to have their ships near their land.

The iceglass does reveal itself to be quite the vicious weapon. When touching the slaves skin, it immediately freezes it, causing nigh-immediate frostbite and spreading patterns of frost across his skin like frozen spiders.

The Galaharian League

Their searches do yield two Mercenary groups of some prestige. In the east, ranging across Naros are Kato’s Men, a group of higlhly trained and well organized men from all walks of life and all regions. Despite their apparently varied nature, they are well known for their ability to act as skirmishers and raiders. They do not appear to be men of high morals, and rarely say no to a job. To the west, a group of ships under the command of Lord Boros, who is certainly not a lord. He commands a dozen galleys that roam the land looking for missions, often jumping from city to city and fighting in smaller battles. Nevertheless, they are quite a respectable organization.

Unrefined bog-silk makes a poor string, but the potential is clearly there. Nevertheless, with no previous knowledge on the product, the Galaharians will need to work harder to understand it.

Nationalism is a foreign concept in the Passan lands, and falls completely flat. Every city welcomes its heroes, but none of them feel particularly tied to their neighboring cities. Nevertheless, a good community of transient merchants and prospective taverners and innkeeps gather around the bank. A merchant gathering place more than town, it still has some popularity.

The Kingdom of Fyr-Darrick

Construction of holy places, and the recruitment of men, but in the deeper places of the forest, the wolves speak once more. (Discord)

The Princedom of Volarucio

The Chapel and its monks seem happy enough to trade, and invite the Princedom’s envoys to share their simple fare during their stay. They appear to be a quiet, studious folk, but friendly enough, and non-aggressive.

Point of Interest - The Emberfields: As for the explorers to the west, they smell the point of interest before they see it. It is covered in dark clouds of smoke, and stinks of burning peat. Upon their approach, they understand why. Here, the ground is less stable, and many gaps exist within it, from whence great gouts of flame erupt sporadically. The grass was burned away long ago, leaving a barren region of dirt and fire. It seems as if a thick layer of peat lies beneath the surface, still simmering and burning. Whatever happened to cause this is long forgotten. Only the fire and smoke remains.

As they approach within a days march of the city of Trident, they are met by a host, gathered before them along the main road between the two nations. It appears larger in size, or equal, to the Volarucian force, and in their center is a great, elaborately decorated tent of gold and blue, with pinions and statues around it. Two envoys wait to meet the Volarucian force, wide friendly smiles on their faces, and unsmiling, stern men surrounding them. They invite the envoys to speak with their commander in his tent. (Discord)

The Hilmedhi Kingdom

Deep into the continent they go. This time, they find inhabited land. Men of brown skin, living in villages and fresh settlements, where the logs are still seeping sap, and traders still pour in with essential resources. Nevertheless, new people to meet! (You have discovered Surya)

The Kingdom of Icefeld

The secrets of iceglass are revealed easily enough to these craftsmen and miners. While the effects are already known, the true issue had been the way in which it is forged, shaped, extracted and use as weaponry without freezing everything around it, or shattering like glass. Yet research bears its fruit, as Icefeld masters the methods, and unlocks the secrets of Iceglass.

The raids are fruitful this year, and many a slave is liberated, many a slaver killed in his home. Innocent karelians die, but the Ice Bears do not seem too concerned about collateral damage. Or looting their houses once they are killed. They find no boy though, and few can even remember him. But wherever he is, he no longer lives in the border regions of Karel.

The last the Kingdom knows of their expedition to the north is that they stayed in a Ulyadar village near the coast. They never return there, and never return to their kingdom.

The Kingdom of Bulgar

A lot of troop training. One might wonder why the Bulgar are doing it...

Antigonid Dynasty

The Army Marches

Large crowds gathered before the Royal Palace in Pelos. The King was to speak, a rare occasion indeed, especially when it concerned the looming threat of the Mongerellians to the south. Rumors of Mongerellian raiders torching villages en masse had spread like wildfire. Now it was finally being addressed. The King, Aegos himself finally emerged from his palace, before he begun to speak. “The Mongerellian menace to our south has once more proven to us they are nothing more than frontier barbarians, capable of nothing more than violence and destruction. As many have already heard, last year, a path of destruction has been waged across our south western border. Villages of innocent civilians, innocent families, slaughtered and plundered. No survivors left alive. The Mongerellians have denied all responsibility for this attack, and refuse to accept our envoys. As such, I will march our armies south, I will turn back every Mongerellian barbarian who dare opposes us, I will scourge their lands and tear down their castles, I will bring into the fold every hold I march on, This is swear not only to you, citizens of Pelos but to the Voleus himself! May he bless our march south” As he finishes the crowd erupts into cheers and applause.

Through the streets of Pelos the army of Aegos VII marched through the main causeway, directly to the city’s main gain. Royal banners hung from every standard and building, snapping and cracking in the wind. Marching drums and trumpets announced the departure of the host, playing joyous tunes. Royal splendor showered the departing men as they marched. Crowds of civilians cheered and waved, handing gifts and flowers to the soldiers, the chance to bring honor to their families and house hand finally arrived.  At the head of the columns, Aegos and the nobility led the procession. As they trot through the streets of the capital, Lord Miros approaches the young King, handing him a small report. “Your Grace, it seems you have found favor in Voleus. Reports from Lord Byrron’s investigations indicate the mist covering the coasts has subsided, or at least the disappearances have stopped. This can only mean GOD approves of your march south. He has quieted the realm so you may better wage war. The masses will take it as fear spreading in the Mongerellian ranks” Aegos listens intently as he grazes over the parchment, rolling it up and returning it to Lord Miros’s hand, “Indeed, it seems Voleus has blessed our campaign. However It would be unwise to lose his favor so soon. Send word to the company officers as we exit Pelos, informing them of this great news. I will have a shrine to Voleus constructed on our march south, and ten bulls will be sacrificed in his honor” With that the Lord was dispatched along the column, and the young kick looked to the clear skies, the crowds and drums beating in his ears. If even GOD has endorsed his war against the Mongerellians, who could hope to stand against him.

A man of his word, upon exiting the capital, several miles south the King halts his armies, constructing a small shrine to the Antigonid god, Voleus. When construction is finished, Aegos has 10 bulls sacrificed in the God’s honor along with a small festival, in the hopes he would further bless his campaign to the south.

The Royal Army

The Royal Army is the true extension of Antigonid power throughout the realm and surrounding areas. A well maintained, trained, and equipped army has been the staple of the dynasty for generations. With ambitions at home and abroad, especially against their neighbors. The Antigonid leadership sees it fit to restructure the armies. The new organization is meant to standardize fighting units into groups called ‘companies’, allowing them to be easily interchanged both in battle and on a strategic level. Additionally, equipment is also to be uniform across every unit.

The following is the new organizational structure for every 500 man infantry ‘unit’

-Cohort (500 men)

------Company (100 men)

----------Decanus (10 men)

THE KINGDOM OF NUMERIA

The Royal Era of Aemer, A.E 416 (Year 1516)

LW6SmwIzDcJnjhE9FeUp6qoRnAg0kyE-1uPed3u0U-cph3jD3Qq3zYaggRfGwVGJPhR3eaeIugCac6l1bXH4PPXevmTkpzNYksOopko7nmyC2AWEsr5_H9xEex1mrN73Rxm4rLAD

As the armies of Numeria are once again sent forth from their homeland in order to secure victories in central Naros, life back in the heartland continues as usual. Tensions throughout the nation dissipate as the King achieves a tremendous victory, saving the City of Arris from ruination.

During his campaign east, the King is encouraged by the letters of his northern peer, Lucius Blackmarrow - Aemyr corresponds with his own affirmations, promising a stupendous victory to shock the annals of time, though notably lacks a response to Lucius’s final claim, unsure of the meaning behind the words.

Within the realms of magical science, a Sorcerer of an erudite disposition from the Sect of Nyria, discovers flight. Accidently mispronouncing an incantation led to the man being lifted off of his feet, and consequently smacking his head against the ceiling of his workplace as he drifted upwards. This remarkable discovery was henceforth declared to all, with the Sorcerer responsible, Haenyr Naryos being lauded as a genius. However the burgeoning military-industrial-complex of Numeria takes quick action on this discovery; with a new theater of combat exposed to the current military doctrines, Central Command organizes the establishment of new tactics, stratagems regarding the skies.

ROYAL ACTIONS

Available Imperial Denarii (Gold): 52,500

The Numerian Army once again crosses over into Ischyrosi territory. The political situation within these lands is gauged by the King, as he expect turmoil and unrest to be prevalent within the people of the Iris. He makes a notable attempt in preventing the pillaging of the Ischyroi, instead opting out to requisition their goods for enforced low prices to those who have not fled from his advance. Aemyr knows he cannot permit the Sehmonians to gather more of their forces, and marches straight for the location of his enemies, said to be gathering under the Spire of the Iris.

Sorcery and Divinity, ever interlocked with one another within Numeria, proves beneficial. With the establishment of the Hermitage within Lyria, the God of the Elements bestows more of his powers onto his subjects, granting them the ability of flight, among other things. The masses continue their worshipping, while Sorcerers dabble within the Arcane realms of the Elements. [Finishing the construction of a Hermitage, +20000 | 50000/50000]

Another division of Sentinels are brought forth from their posts around the Well of Eternity, primarily Sentinels from the Northwestern segment of the Lake. They’re tasked to trail after their King’s Army, eventually reaching him in a year’s time. [A unit (500) of Lyrian Sentinels are recruited | 6000/6000]

With Numeria sharing the world’s longest peaceful border with Danwent, the need for the Rangers of Numeria to remain on-guard of their forests diminishes. Galaharian League

The ports of Batista’s Landing this year are especially busy. Two of the League’s towering Nuncios dominate the horizon. Anchored beside them is a panoply of carracks, caravels, cogs and galleys. The glue to any naval power, something Galahar knew well. Their fleet had suffered a humiliation from the mistreavers power once. But it would not be so again, Galahar was prepared this time. Long columns of merchants, slaves, soilders, adepts, clerks, lords, and all other sorts are making their way to the ships. Ormanno Sforza leads them in all his splendor. He wears a suit of black armor, stylized into a snarling wolf. Behind him are his renown Wolf Slayers, and row upon row of heavy infantry. However as Sforza approaches his Nuncio, he sees someone else is waiting for him...

Duchess Arraign Barbaro used to be a beautiful women. Some may still say so, her husband included. But the truth was her face is hideously scarred. Short a nose, ear, and eye, she has a gash through half her face. And so Arraign takes to wearing a bronze mask, in the image of the Being. It serves it’s uses as well, hiding her emotions. It served to reming Leaguesmen of the more firm side of Barbaro rule. Coincidentally, the Duchess was doing just that this day. As Sforza arrives at the docks, he dismounts and kneels. Arraign picks him back to his feet, smiling behind her mask.

“My lady, I did not expect to see you here.” Sforza begins, looking bemused. “I thought you had a League to rule, don’t let the likes of us detract you.” Arraign’s grin grows broader. Always one to enjoy the discomfort of Sforza, she states in a rather monotone voice. “It has been decided differently. You are the one with a League to rule. Don’t let me detract you from that Lord Sforza.” As expected the burly Admiral begins to bluster, quite angrily. “The command is mine! The Duke has prompted me to sail east, we all heard his mes-“ The Duchess icily cuts in “Giovenco is not here, and he has given the ultimate command to me, overriding yours.” A few clerks and scribes murmur their assent. They were sticklers for the rules and protocol after all. “It is personal, Sforza. That mongrel did this to my face.” She takes off her mask, showing her wounds. “He killed my men, spat on my family’s name, and slaughtered many innocents. The Hilmedhi fleet will follow me better, and the Danwenti senators praise House Barbaro. I am sailing east.” An so she does.....

*The Galaharian fleet under the stern command of Duchess Arraign Barbaro head along the Revar coast. Stopping to meet some Dourdelaic merchants, they continue down to Aulem’s port. Finally, they arrive at the Ivory City. There they pick up gold and supplies for the final trip. It is also when the grand Hilmedhi fleet meets the League’s. The Hilmedhi greet their long lost Princess with joy, and the two navy powers become one for a time. They make a final joint sail to the League’s easternmost outpost, on the Island off the Aulem peninsula. There they will also meet a strong force of Danwenti galleys. Expecting the voyage to take the whole year, the fleets focus on sailing. But a net is gradually being cast to catch the Mistreaver.....

khang_le_02.jpg

Leaving a sulking Sforza behind to rule proved most useful however. His personal guard kept order in the city, and senate. No talks of freeing the slaves or democracy are tolerated. Though Duke Giovenco to the west is spouting the new creed, the League overrides him. It was however a delicate balance. Barbaro power will be maintained, but monitored. Neither side can be allowed to go too far, thus putting Sforza right int he middle. He focuses on doing what the League does best, being busy.

**The Lord of this mercenary fleet is invited to make way to Batista’s Landing for employment. He is however the first of what will hopefully be thousands. Sforza and the League will start to turn Batista’s Landing into the home seat for all Mercenary regiments of renown. What can be offered is their own district in the city, next to the ports. There Mercenary Captains can make their offices, to recruit and conduct business. It will also give them access to making connections with over twelve different nations arriving in the Capital to trade. The Captains will be given free reign to conduct their business, with no tax. The League simply wants to have them based in their Capital for the prestige it entails. Monetary incentive is also offered to base units in the League’s Capital.

***In other more exciting news Sforza finally gets around to the Wet Throat expedition. A few Banners of his best men are selected for the mission. They will hire Fey living within the League to assist in the march. Their goal is to sail to the Wet Throat, near the League’s newest and westernmost town. Basing there to gather supplies, they will then head right to where the roots meet water. The next part is simple, yet the most dangerous. Follow the roots inward to wherever they may lead..

Nation Roleplay:

The flap of the tent opened and shortly a guttural Oink interrupted, much to Feobald’s surprise five grey cloaked men entered. Quickly reaching for the dagger next to his cot, they revealed themselves.“My lord, we’ve come from your home of Shaw.” the tallest of the two spoke in an unsettling raspy tone. Slowly they lifted their cloaks to reveal an older man and his young disciple lacking any sort of hair including their eyebrows, their entire eyes only black. “A kingsmen, you should oink louder next time.”

“You might have gone deaf from all the screaming you faced last year. We’ve arrived at your new keep now m’lord, you should come and see the welcoming party.” The ragged man stood, his tired bones reminding him of his age. “I guess I should, how many are gathered?” The disciple opened the tent flap for his Duke, he could see his guards fighting back a group of young women. It was time he thought.

The people before him erupted in a cheer of thousands simply filling the valley between the city and keep with a human chorus. Feobald thrusted his hand and following it came the loudest “OINK” the kingdom had ever heard, it took several minutes for the chanting to stop. It was for that moment of calm that the people remembered those that died but their loss was not in vain. Drinks were raised and barrels emptied, houses and the keep of Ockham full of strangers.

The night came with the moonlight shining inside the great hall of Feobald’s keep, sounds of peaceful sleeping and quiet laughter emanating throughout it. Our duke sits on his throne, tired and weary. “How many men have been assigned to my levy Ser Hog?” A prompt oink followed by a shuffling of papers.

“Over 1,500 your grace with most of them directly from the city, the king demanded you keep a strong core of 500 veterans.” Feo stretched his legs. “I’ve gained another keep aswell and our majesty has instructed me to find someone to watch over it.”

Feobald raised his hand for Hog to come and kneel before him. “I declare you now the Baron of Highgate, you are responsible for the city and its people and answer now directly to me.” So it was, Hog the first knight of the boar was raised.

With the vassalation of the Chapel of Knauledge’s populace, the kingdom pulls back its troops, leaving a garrison of humans in charge of guarding the vassal populace. As the capital celebrates the bloodless victory, the kingdom restructures itself to handle the population increase. As the crown has subjected humans to its will and won a 1 hour war called by the Lithborn ‘The One Day War’, the nation renames itself to the Holy Empire of Grimsborith. Assuming the title of Emperor, Relis Korkus now reigns as one of the largest nations in the known world with one of the most premier armies. Several farms are created within the kingdom with three settlements being founded at the fringes of the nation to control the mountain border with the southern horse tribes and provide a buffer to possible southern aggression northward.

To the west the king leaves with thousands of troops to relieve the fey in the forest. The men are heavily armed and seem keen on finishing the war. Mages train their newly acquired magic skills in preparation for the holy war in the forest. The kingdom has grown well and it is time to impose the might of the lithborn onto weak nations both near and far.

A squire aids in his knight in equipping his battle armor.

A child sat alone in the study of his Lord’s keep. He appeared fixated on a tome which lay in his lap. It was a an aged book, though showed extravagance, crafted from red velvet and fine parchment. He was consumed, eyes prying between the lines of which he read. Beside him was a towering knight, clad head to toe in his black plate - though, unhelmed.

The child pointed to the right page, which shown an illustration of a certain coat of arms. A shield bearing two golden towers, connected by a low running bridge with the Sun on the horizon. “The House of Therevault.”

“By God…” the Knight said, “Completely wrong. How can you confuse the House of Therevault with the House of Suttre. Are you even reading or glancing at the pretty pictures?”

“Apologies, Sir Chilfroy.” the young page said, “I promise I am. There’s just… so many. It’s hard to remember/”

The Knight laid his steel-clad hand upon the boy’s shoulder, consoling him, “Fret not, for I know. When I squired to the previous Knight-Commander Sir Massone the Exuberant, he would not let me leave the libraries ‘til I memorized every word ‘pon this book.”

The boy nodded.

“Here, you can make this up. Get this right, and we’ll head to today’s practice and sparring.”

The boy smiled, “Okay.”

“Right.” said the Knight, “What is the motto of the House of Therevault?”

The page paused, consumed in thought, digging to the farthest reaches of his memory. “Uh… is it… er… I know this - Our resolve is tempered?”

“Ah!” the Knight exclaimed, mussing the page’s hair, “Perhaps you’re not so useless after all. Come, meet me in the courtyard when you’re ready. And bring steel.”

Bourdeleaux’s future lay within their youth, inspired by their elders and the tales of greatness spouted by the faith. Every expense possible was spared to prepare brave for the fight that lay ahead. All signs pointed to ‘the Darkness’, a vague, supernatural entity which opposed the forces of Light. None, fully comprehended it. As such, it was used as a fear tactic, both by the faith and by parents to bring their children in line. In all, they were raised with the notion of combating it someday. The day would come where every man and woman would need to fight it. Naturally, they would seek to be prepared for this incursion.

--

Through the past years, Bourdeleaux’s armed forces had taking a substantial hit - from the Hakkans campaign to the assault upon Carrow. This created a situation which needed to be rectified. More and more bodies would need to be drafted into the ranks. Men from throughout the Empire were drawn to serve in the Army. The next few years would undoubtedly see an increase in personnel.

--

As national and regimental pride have increased, so has inter-unit animosity among His Imperial Majesty’s Armed Forces. Initially beginning during the monotony of camp life at the Siege of Carrow, what was once banter has now turned into conflict between the Bourdelaic ranks. But these weren’t just men from the rank and file. They were among the Empire’s most elite troops, who had grown hostile to each other. Whether that would become a hindrance to the Empire’s campaigns would be unknown, and was doubted from all reaches. The notorious Black Bastards who had served with distinction in the Carrow War, and longtime household guard of the Phoenix Brigade were at odds. With the death of the late Crown Prince Adrian, the Black Bastards had made the claim that were they on the Field of Tears, that the battle would’ve had a far different result. Meant to incite or not, the honor of the Phoenix Guard was challenged. A confrontation had ensued in the middle of the camp, though was dispersed by senior members of either faction who quickly moved to reprimand their subordinates.

_XWodDVqmD2nSHPWha6mO979PFcAeBZtUk29NudBga5hEI7HjRaTXFIF8wk6cht0wL3ZVpTwUl0SwYiMqJgJ8lHbbdFDveheNj6IJmDiOYG7vw_oAfsYRTfBbAIZSfs8bGBT7pHv

A duel between two Black Army soldiers.

The Black Bastards, renowned for their shock infantry tactics and use of great two-handed weapons, had shouted various obscenities regarding the incompetence of the Phoenix Guard and that the old guard should be cast aside for the new. Naturally, it would be quite upsetting to an individual who has dedicated his whole life to the preservation and protection of the Imperial Family. A fine divide had been created and a line in the sand drawn. The Guardsmen and the Black Bastards Battalion kept to themselves, seldom inclining to physical confrontation. Merely, they cast scornful glances across the camp and made their banter just audible enough for it to be heard.

A depiction of a Black Bastard infantryman after the Battle of Carrow Fields

Yet after that sole incident, there was no fight since. They were members of the Imperial Army, owing allegiance to Empire and Emperor before all. Engaging in petty squabble would detract from their ability to adhere to their sacred oath. Childish as it may be, there were several underlying issues afoot.

DUCHY OF ULYADAR

Related image

1514

Bruce the Red, as he has been denominated as, lay restless in the throne room. He paced to and fro, up the stairs that led up to the throne, and back down. He had been told that there had been ill-news for him to receive regarding the raid. The raids had soon become an integral part of the Ulyadar economy, introducing foreign wealth and slaves to the nation's coffers. The Duchy depended  on these goods, whether it be for stacking up the treasuries, or for sacrifices to Tykir.

Then, a side door opens, and a servant pops his head through. He kneels, and avoids eye contact with Bruce, as he states, “Your Grace, they have arrived.” his face fades from view behind the door, and from within emerges a convoy of members of the elite, the royal family, and other members of the court. They assume their positions about the throne room, standing next to their seats. Bruce, has already taken his seat on the throne, his knee bouncing quickly in anticipation.

The oak doors fly open, and a large contingent of soldiers in chain escort a group of 3 men, wearing nothing but a thick bear fur and ripped trousers, followed by a group of men dressed in foreign mail, with olive faces.

The envoy collectively fall on one knee, and drop their heads out of respect for the royalty. Bruce stares as the men cold heartedly, his knee continuously bobbing. Bruce extends an arm, and motions upwards with it. “Rise, lost-men, and speak.” booms Bruce bluntly, not being a man of many words.

The sounds of silence resonates throughout the room, as the three fraily dressed men rise, they glare at each other, exchanging half frightened, half encouraging expressions. Out of the blue, a slender individual finds his voice. “Your Grace, blessed of blood, the tales we have brought back from our voyages amongst foreign warm waves, where the sun shines brightly and the ground is green, are not that of the pub type, no, my lord. Upon those dangerous waters, we were pitted against an enemy which from the very commencement of battle we were doomed to lose against. The enemy rose  in the form of the common mist cloud that greets every sailors sunrise, but this mist, this mist was different. It was a blinding, encompassing mist. I tell you, by my very mother, that it was not possible to see my very brother in front of me, and we certainly could not spot the other vessels. Fortune was in our favor, that we were placed under the Honourable Gnupa’s wise command, for if we weren't, then the fate of our brothers would have been replicated.” he pauses, as if remembering the very day it occurred.

He continues his monologue,”We then heard the sounds of a ship, then two, then a fleet, in front of our very noses. But alas, it was far to late. Before we could unhinge our shields and draw our swords, two of our ships had already been condemned to the seas by ramming, and battle was upon us. Hundreds of them boarded our ships, dancing in and out of the cloud, dropping us one by one. It was Gnupa who took hold of the situation, and organized us, and we drove them back to the hell they came from. We attempted to rally the others, to find the other ships, but our calls went unanswered. We were the only ones left. Then, a booming voice, as if Tykir himself were speaking upon our ears, demanded our surrender. Valiantly so, Gnupa rejected.  Valiance he did have more than us all. Our hull was snapped in two by a ship that materialised only when it was upon us, and subsequently the horde of the pirates disembarked. We attempted to hold the lines, to repel them, to slaughter them, but numbers favored the enemy. We were cut down, until the only ones that survived were us three, because we laid down our arms, and Gnupa, who confronted the captain of the bastards. A massive, pale individual, with a glimmering blade of gold, and black rags draped across his body, with a blood red sash. Gnupa and he exchanged words, and they soon dueled, but Gnupa was overpowered. The captain was skilled, but we never saw Gnupa relent, never. They threw us on rafts, and left us out to die upon the waters. By god's grace, we landed upon the lands of these hospitable men over here, bannermen of the House of Antigonid, whom sheltered us and sponsored a journey back home, to these lands, so i may relay this information to you. Gnupa, my lord, was not with us, and i have not seen him since.” The man bows, and turns his gaze towards the stone floor.

Bruce’s leg ceased to jitter, and instead he leans forward in his throne, balling his fists, his veins bulging in his arms. “Gnupa…” he says, rage filling his words. An old man, in silk robes and holding a staff in his arms, tilts his head and speaks up. “My grace, are you well?” Bruce snaps towards him, his eyes filled with wrath. In an instant, he calms himself, and reclines back upon the stone throne, ignoring the comment. “Eloquence you have, man, but a warrior-heart you do not have, as Gnupa did.” he states, staring the man blankly in the eyes. “Nevertheless, I thank your cowardice, as now we know we have an enemy to slaughter.” Bruce stands, followed by the rest of the court.

His voice resonates across every corner of the hall, as he states, “A reward of 150,000 gold coins now exists for any man who can recover Gnupa, and bring him before me, alive.” He turns towards a guard standing by a door post. “Spread this through the realm, and the neighboring realms. Gnupa will be found.” Without saying another word, he turns on one foot, and exists the court, slamming the oak door, leaving the men inside in a whirlwind of gossip and chatter.

Padma stood in darkness, gazing at moon-flecked waves as they washed against the hull of the ship. The ocean wasn’t so bad - she’d stopped vomiting after a few days once they passed Varchas, and she had her balance now. But she could not longer call herself Sattva.

The first night had scared her, for in Surya there was never any true dark. She felt blind when she went belowdecks, had screamed for the sun as if it was never to return. Some of the crew worried about her, others grumbled. Most covered their ears and ignored her. There was no going back though, and as children often do, she soon got used to the world without light.

A creak sounded behind her - the captain, a black Golishman with a gaunt face and a scar across his lip. The two were alone on the deck, and luckily so: the man was carrying the gilded bow Padma had brought from the capital. Arjun’s bow, famous throughout the land.

“You left it out belowdecks,” the man explained. “You are the one, aren’t you?”

Padma stood in shock. She’d been careless, too careless to realize she could so easily be recognized.

“It’s alright. You paid for transport, transport is what you’ll get.” The older man crossed to stand next to her, watching the waves. “I just wanted to know why you left.”

“Bad things,” was all Padma could think to say, but then went on. “I had a dream. There was nothing I could do to stop it from coming true there. So I’m going somewhere else.”

He looked at her for a few moments while she thought. The Mahasattva, on his ship. There were more than a few people who would pay good money to have her turned over to them, and there was nothing she could do to stop him. But something in her bright eyes spoke to him. He could never betray this girl. She was important.

”Where will you go now? After we make port.” The captain handed the bow to her, but it was some time before she answered.

“I’m still thinking about it.”

“Still thinking?” He leaned on the gunwale, amused.

“I have time! And I have to be sure. The Mahasattva can’t be wrong.”

The Golishman was silent, observing her sympathetically. He had a daughter himself about this age, but she was never so serious. In fact she was probably still playing with dolls, all the way in Ratnagiri.

”Sattva Sarkar always said to think things through. But I never can, not fast enough. I’m wrong sometimes.”

“No one’s perfect.”

“I have to be!”

The captain chuckled quietly, and there was a long pause. “I think, memsahib, that if anything you need to think less. You’ll be no good to anyone if you cannot make your own choices.”

“I was not thinking when I came aboard this ship,” the young girl replied sullenly.

“Perhaps it will be for the best. One rarely knows for su-” The captain suddenly paused, squinting across the water. “Boats,” he said, but he was stating the obvious. They had anchored close to shore, and now a dozen longboats were clearly visible in the wan light of the moon.  Men shouted from the boats, and above the leading one hung the clearly visible banner of the black sun.

DbTLwyEiU5-uQE2fmeT4bvWqTbug4cuuo-tWPOLrLInfN-UhasYVYoK9M-kTNw7fwpm-n3C6s2lNpqlbyt4Mg7VF308y04WQixuA0JIe_uitA1ME26w7v5NybBWo9xapD6S0yE1O

Crewmen rushed to the deck, armed with whatever they could find, for all of them knew what the banner meant. The followers of Ravi Singh had left it behind at a hundred scorched villages, and now they were here, closer to the sacred city than anyone thought possible. They were coming fast, and though the anchor was already being raised it was clear they’d catch up.

The captain looked down at the little girl he’d foolishly agreed to transport. Her amber eyes were staring across the water blankly, and the bow she held seemed far too big for her.

“Can you use that, memsahib?” He asked, jerking her shoulder back to face him. She was frozen, and just looked back at the approaching longboats, mouth hanging slightly open. The captain scoffed, and pointed at the hatch to belowdecks. “Run!” he commanded, but he turned away then for the boats had almost arrived, hemming his ship in, pushing it towards shore. They were trapped, and now was the time to fight. So captain and crew fought, and Padma went to hide.

---------

As turbulent events wash across the twin islands, a worrying discovery is made in Aros. The Nameless Dark has taken root here, and it yet resists the light of Mihir. For now, Surya has conquered, but they must be ready to defend their conquest.

Kingdom of Icefeld

Diary of Franz Josef, Lead Explorer

Day 875

“The Harsh winds continue to blow. As we focus on the journey ahead we must be wary. The Icefeldian hand has grasped across a continent, and King Havvard’s Colours adorn mountains every 100 leagues. It has been 800 and seventy five days since we left the capital of Kaldvask. 700 days since we left the Auldic tribes and began the long trek. It has been only 400 days since myself and 50 of the best explorers left the other 200 explorers with the Chief and his Western Auldic tribes.

With the warmer seasons coming it is prevalent that we must make more progress. The men have begun to show the first signs of fatigue. Many wonder when we will return to our Kingdom. Many were only boys when we departed. But the north has a way of breeding boys into men, and that is much more true out here in the wild.

This year will be spent preparing, i have conferred with King Havvard through long delayed letter and we are of the opinion south is the way to go. When the ice thaws next spring our expedition shall depart the Ice tribes to the unknowns. What lies there we will soon find out.”

____________________________________________________________________

Expenditure

As the Expedition to the Auldic tribes begins to expand through more than just one continent. No movement is conducted this year. Instead the year is spent gathering supplies and ferrying the other 200 explorers to the Ice tribes from the Western Auldic tribes. Supplies are stocked and the hardy explorers of Icefeld under the leadership of Franz Josef prepare to depart south.
