The Kingdom of Hilmedhi

The Ironbreakers return home from their expedition with tales of the famed City of Mirrors, carrying several large chest and a business partner. The men, were pleased with their new found ally in the West. Towards the east, more troubling times were coming. The navy was fresh, and lack experience in naval combat. Fighting the Mistreavers on the sea would be different than the land combat....

1516

A slogging, slow victory for the Eadni, and a defeat for the Antigonids. The War of the Hand continues to divide the region, but now the Mongerellians can only feel the pressure of imminent defeat, as their men pull back from the Eadni army, and their fleet is repeatedly harried and pushed back, as more and more of their island holdfasts fall to the Eadni and their ruthless intimidation tactics. The Eadni have repeatedly made us of keeps as an example, demanding surrender and slaughtering every single soul within should they refuse. With the failing will of the Mongerellians, and the impossibility of being rescued on the islands, the keeps and forts are surrendering more often than not. But on the mainland, many still believe in their army, and their famed Drowned Men.

The free thinkers of democracy continue to spread what is either their ‘wisdom’ or their ‘plague’ in the south of Symon. It truly depends on who you ask. Either way, the local lords have begun to take notice. In fact, Lord Dunwick himself along with his son, Serros Dunwick, have returned to their family holdfast, the Boulder, an ugly, thick-walled castle with a gentle slope on one side, and a cliff overlooking a river on the other. From here, they exercise their control over these thoughts in the south-east of the Empire, sharply halting those who wish to venture into this region by having them flogged, imprisoned, or executed. It seems that most of the efforts are spearheaded by Dunwick’s son and heir, while Dunwick remains in the Boulder for most of the time, drilling his household guard, or suffering from bouts of pain and sickness. The humiliation laid out upon him by the Emperor made it clear, the once lauded general of the Empire is no longer welcome in the capital.

In the east of Naros, the never-ending assault on the Ashval continues, and though they have their Librarian allies to aid them in one place, many others suffer. Nevertheless, what was once a continues advance has been stalled into a slow, bloody grind as the Librarian trainers prepare these unorganized masses of peasants and shape them into a proper armed force with the ability to repell smaller attacks. The larger swarms continue to be a terrifying sight on any horizon.

With a new ruler at its head, the Xian Kingdom, headed by Xian Lao, make a most unexpected move. They settle south of the mountains that have defined their borders for as long as Surya would have known of them. A shocking move, for a stagnant nation, but Xian Lao is said to have claimed in court that for a nation so steeped in the belief of Change, they have stagnated for far too long.

With the disintegration of relations between Hakkan the Undying, Chosen of God and Master of the Skies and the Kingdom of Karel, they march again. This time, the Hakkan urge their allies to march on the Karel and push them back, for without their Swine allies, they can surely not repeat the Field of Tears! (discord for those involved.)

Only a little mist, on the coasts of Ulyadir. Then quiet.

The Republic of Danwent

As the men of Danwent sail south, the land changes. Here, on this new piece of land, jungles grow thick and the animals differ greatly from their homeland. Where the heat may stay the same as their southern coast, the moisture rises, and the screech of monkeys accompanies them as they hack down next trees to shape their new colonies.

In the Symon Empire, the influence of the two envoys words continue to grow, as more and more people attend their forums in the market squares of Slatewater. In fact, the very first break-off groups have formed in surrounding towns and villages, lead by inspired merchants and peasants who heard their words!

The Fortress Libraries

Medical research continues, as the Libraries continue to advance their knowledge past the limits of what they have in their deep libraries. Truly, they are gaining stunning insight into the inner functionings of humans. Best not to ask exactly how or why though.

And battle comes to the Librarians. Finally. Maybe?!

The Antigonid Dynasty

Though defeated at what the Mongerellians are loudly calling ‘The Battle of Fool’s Crossing’, good news does filter in from the south. The Eadni defeated the second Mongerellian army after a long stalemate, pushing them back into their land. Honorable folk, they recognize the significance of having half the Mongerellian army diverted north, and make no comment on the Antigonid defeat.

The Kingdom of Numeria

The Ischyrosi give them mixed responses. Some of the villages welcome them as heroes and saviors, others with sullen indifference. Yet others simply flee towards the city of Ischyros. Nevertheless, the men find more smiling faces than angry ones on their way through the land. It seems that the memory of the masses is short, and few recall just who sparked this whole war. As such, they soon appear within a few days march from Ischyros itself, where the Symon army is desperately replenishing its forces… (Discord)

The Galaharian League

The trip is indeed a long one, and there is still much sea to cross, the vast southern Naros bay, and further beyond. Still, they have cast their nets, and unfurled their sails. Surely they will catch a fat fish soon enough…

The bank continues to spread its tendrils around the world, with a new establishment in Danwent. (+2k a turn for Bank of the World)

Many mercenary groups had already elected to station men in Batista’s Landing, a central place from which they can sail to any conflict in the world easily enough, bar the Symon-Numeria war. Nevertheless, they gladly take the opportunity for more benefits, and many bands large and small soon cluster into this area of the city. It may no longer be a safe place to live in, but the leaders of the League have what they want.

The expedition into the Greenthroat follows the few roots that delve into the woods. A month later, a handful of men, ragged and maddened, straggle out of the woods, their eyes wild, their clothes nothing but tatters. My what tales do they have to tell... (Discord)

The Kingdom of Five

The Northernmost keep, on the border with Melda, sits upon the flat open around at the end of the ismuth. No hills, woods or rivers surround this barren, wind-beaten slice of land.

In the south, the keep resides over its domain from the top of a large hill, with a forest climbing up the southern side.

As for the search for Swinium, well, it goes slowly. The Swinemen are not reknowned for their intellect or their acumen with steel. As such, progress is a slow grind as attempt after attempt fails and is discarded. Surely, it will work eventually.

The Kingdom of Bulgar

With its decision to announce itself as an Empire, the Symon Empire sends a delegation to the Lithborn with a basic treaty for peace and trade as well as polite assurances and congratulations to the newly formed Empire and Emperor.

The settlers struggle to find good ground in these tall peaks. Indeed, such is the struggle that the two groups of settlers bound for the deeper mountains must abandon their mission, along with many good men and materials, in the craggy crests and valleys of the Roots. Those sent to colonize the foothills should count themselves lucky, for they must only contend with blizzards and storms, not ice and death. (5k reimbursed total, the rest is lost in the mountains.)

The Empire of Bourdeleaux

The colonists, as always in these harsh lands, settle the rough terrain with little trouble. An outlaw here, a highwayman there, nothing that the Black Army cannot deal with. However, one day, a shepard from the newly established town nearest to the land of the roaming Herzaka rushes back into town holding a red arrow. He claims that five riders came up and shot it into the ground a dozen meters from him, then galloped off…

The Duchy of Ulyadar

Many a ship built, but before they can be launched, a large village disappears into the mist. The only place struck during the year, it appears to also be the village in which some of Gnupa’s loyal men, and a few members of his family lived. The family is found dead, the men are never found.

Surprisingly enough, the trappers find no real signs of life. The waters in this region are empty, no seals bask in the cold sun, and no whales make their lazy way around the islands. The longer they stay, the more the paranoia eats at them, like a cancer devouring their brain, until some of them either flee home, or resort to violence. Whatever is in this place corrupts the mind, that much is clear.

The Princedom of Volarucio

The Volarian scholars are allowed into the hallowed halls of the Chapel, though many of the rooms and sections of the libraries are restricted only to the eyes of the Monks, they still may learn a great many things from this place, should they respect the rules of the establishment.

With their limited insight into inner magical mechanisms of the land, the scholars find very little of significance. These lands are constantly filled with a terrible smell, and gouts of fire erupt at random throughout the land, killing more than one man as they erupted beneath his feet. But these men, limited as they are, find no magical traces in the land.

Few people arrive in Volarucio following their establishment as a Kingdom dedicated to their god. Indeed, those rare few who trickle in are those who suffered persecution in other lands, for the most part. The nature of gods and magic, and their innate jealousy towards intermingled worship has never stimulated a cosmopolitan approach to religion in surrounding nations. (+5000 population and 1 adept.)

The Volarucian emissary is accepted into the Imperial halls in Loswarn, the capital of the Symon Empire.

The Kingdom of Fyr-Darrick

Little happens in the forest, beyond the eternal stand-off with the Darkyrians in the north. No wolves make their way into the Fey regions this year and the Darkyrians, as they have been doing for years, make no attempt in regaining their lost land, now that it is overwhelmed by regrowing trees. It seems that the forest is holding its breath, waiting for something.

The Commonwealth of Ruhn

A momentous day. For the first time since they began their research all those years ago, the scholars working on the Levers of the Five Divines have managed to make a single aspect of the mechanism work, and now gain insight into the way with which it interacts with the rest of the machine! A wonderful leap forward, as they continue to shower praise on the complexity of the creation, and assure the Commonwealth that they must be on the verge of a major breakthrough of the likes that will allow for *gasp* full comprehension! (Maybe, adds one dreary and dubious old scholar at the back of the room.)

In other news, Lord Karx, the once lord Celisto, prince of Lem and son of Lord Celis, sends an envoy to Ruhn. It seems that the acolyte he saved from execution so long ago has converted him to the faith of He Who Waits. In doing so, he has converted the city of Hwait, the newly founded Free City on the tip of the Bay. Lord Karx, it seems, would be most interested in an accord between his thriving young city and Ruhn.

Surya

And appraise they do. (Discord)

This new settlement sits below the great mausoleum, and amongst the ruins of an ancient nation. Every day the settlers find more pottery, old weapons, pieces of furniture and art. They seem to be buried or strewn through this city in great numbers. Most of the art comes in the shape of semi-demolished mosaics, but all of them clearly depict the sun in one way, shape or form. Some may find eerie to live in these ruins, but the connection between their culture and the one left before them is clear.

In Esma (Chittor??) a few tribes have begun to strike out at the Suryan settlements on the northern coast. They come from the forest, though they do not bear any traditional Surukai markings. Typically, they strike fast, plunder and kill, then flee back into the jungle when the Suryans approach  the villages in numbers.

The Kingdom of Icefeld

The supplies, and the explorers continued contribution to the well-being of the tribes in which they have been allowed to say, ensures that they are well-fed. Certainly, a few die in the winter, but this is the north. If men do not die in the winter, then it is a mild one indeed.

The Blackmarrow scholars and courtiers with which they consult as notably close-lipped about this. Instead of giving any real answer, they often glance at third dark tower in the fortress of Sentinel, make a small gesture with their hand, a curled finger before their neck, then shrug and state that the glaciers are a dangerous place. Those who do not react in such a way seem entirely clueless about the whole thing.

The Fortress Libraries

1517

VK1pbNl.png

Under the supervision of the High-Quartermaster Maria Vane, the town of Hardshore has flourished into a true fortress library. Once a simple outpost on a rocky promentory on an eponymously hard shore, the settlement now is more of a city. A grand central structure stands on the great rock, soaring into the sky, and delving even further downward into the stone. Work still continues, and at breakneck pace. Walls and a keep are constructed around the outer town and its buildings, and the natural harbour of the shoreline is further excavated and dredged to create sufficient berths for ships. Intended to by the Fortress Libraries’ link to the wider world via the sea, and surely a hub of trade, a new merchant guildhall is constructed to regulate and see that the Great Endeavour and its custodians receive their due.

Elsewhere, life continues as normal. Foreign dignitaries are met and knowledge is exchanged, notably with the neighbouring Volarucians and the distant Fey. More farmland is cultivated in the homelands, reclaimed from the vile Stinkswamp or in new fishfarms copied from Ulyadi designs. Yes, life continues, but word is eagerly awaited from their brothers and sisters, sons and daughters in Ashval, where the wolves are baying ever closer at the door. Fresh troops are recruited in preparation for a longer campaign against the chaotic horde, but surely the good men of the Kryze Expedition are enough to smite such barbarians.

Surely.

This did include the attempted construction of a fortified road from Rohsor along the rocky cliffside to the newly founded town of Razryii. (-7,400 Duwats)

Nation Roleplay:

The salty ocean splashed into Dakkar’s boots as men ran behind him along the port, thousands of workers had been preparing Ockham’s port for months and the signs of construction was obvious. Shipyards were placed directly next to the fisherman wharves with Feobald’s keep overlooking the scenery. Plenty of guardsman had been assigned from his duke’s levy, their chain-mail and sallet helmets recently cleaned as to show the order of these veterans.

A courier approached the King, the proper oink greeting occurring before he speaks. “Your majesty, I bear word from the southern cities with reports of great success coming along with their shipyards. Ser Hog personally says he estimates about 10 ships a year with the current shipyards under production.”

Turning to look at the courier with his flowing red-black cape flowing behind him, the guards turned as well ensuring a net of protection around their king. “Appoint Ser Hog to gather up the citizenry required to settle south near Ruhn, we will need more if we’re to join the seafarers. I expect this done by the end of the year, they’re to settle on the coast for this reason.” Dakkar uttered a deep oink to his courier who nodded and oinked back before running off and boarding his horse.

Feobald’s gallop alerted the King to once again pivot, his duke disembarking with a smile and oink. “Your majesty, I’ve waited too long to show you how it is in the north!” Dakkar oinked and returned the smile coming in to give the old man a manly hug. “Not as cold as I thought it would be save for the ocean. How goes the family?” Sounds of thousands of peasants made this almost inaudible, Ockham was a truly alive city.

“They’re growing up well and the wife's happy, I can’t complain.” Cheerfully Feobald spoke, his fame from the one battle war brought his spirits high as it did to the elated folk of the city. “Grand news though I hope not to turn you sour friend. I had a dream, an unspeakable dream.”

Antigonid Dynasty

1517

Mongerellia, Early 1517

Long columns of soldiers snaked across the landscape in front of Aegos. As the sun slowly peaked across the horizon, the pillars of smoke arising from Mongerellian villages become fully visible, retaliation for the previous year’s defeat. Many of Aegos’ men were battered or bruised from the previous ‘battle’ If one could call it that. What was intended to be a surprise attack across the ford, ended in total disaster and humiliation. Hundreds of bodies filled the small crossing, and morale seemed to be at an all time low, all because he had foolishly believed they could take the crossing by storm. Since they departed from Pelos only last year, nothing but death and failure plagued the Antigonid host. However the past was written, and the men lost in battle could not be brought back, the mistakes could not be undone, only the future could be altered. Voleus had been absent, surely he had known the crossing was ill-advised and thus remained silent. Still, one could only hope for a sign, a message, anything…

He spurred his horse, riding forward towards the front of the column where Lord Byrron, clad in his silver armor and plumed helmet shouted orders to departing horsemen. “Byrron” The King spoke as his horse arrived at the scene. The small contingent of his bodyguards trailing only several yards behind

“Your Grace” the Lord replied, giving a small nod.

“What news from the Capital?”

“It seems all it well in the Royal City of Pelos. According to Lord-Governor Leontius Royce’s report. It arrived only yesterday. Economic expansion has continued as planned, and Leontius has succeeded in securing several profitable trade deals. Though, he states it would be nigh impossible to raise any reinforcements until next year, at the earliest.. ”

“We will have to make every man count it seems then, how many day’s march are we from the next Mongerellian city?” in front of him the march of Latesian boots continues, almost drowning out his voice. Rows of pikes distorting his vision of the countryside.

“We are still unsure, it cannot be far. It will have to wait for further scout reports, your Grace”

“And of the Mongerellian armies themselves?” The King inquires, peaking an eyebrow.

“Our Eadni friends have won a grueling victory over a second army in the west. The one that repulsed us at the crossing has shown little activity of note, especially during the wintering months. We should proceed with caution, Your Grace, we could be put in real threat of a pincer.”

“It matters not, I will not be undone by mere forces of nature again, nor the mere wills of men. This I swear not only to yourself, But with Voleus as my witness. He returned my dynasty to the mainland, with our loyal swords for a reason, and I will not disappoint him. We will make the Mongerellians pay tenfold for the losses incurred on us at the crossing.”

“So I hope, Your Grace” the Lord replies grimly, as he once more nods, departing to the rear of the column. Leaving the young king with his thoughts.

The Northern Frontier

Ser Edrich Palgos looked out from the watchtower constructed in the semi permanent camp. To the west, the vast jungle enveloped all he could see, what really swelled inside, none could be certain. The thick humidity slowly began condensing on his face as he turned to the east, the sun gleamed across The Expanse, yet another realm of mystery. Truly, he was stationed on the edge of the known world, what lurked beyond, he knew not. The knight quickly began descending from the tower, grumbling and muttering to himself about the blasting heat at even this early in the morning. The camp was filled with little activity. Several sentries dotted the walls, slowly going about their morning duties. Amidst the tents, the garrison was slowly rising, several men chatting as the others cooked their breakfasts. Edrich walked through rows of tents towards the  command tent, garnering a salute here, and a nod there from the few men who had yet woken. He lifted the flap of the command tent, several other soldiers already inside, pouring over the areas that had been charted and they maps they did have.

“News? Orders?” Edrich asked, addressing the men.

“A little bit of both” One of the soldiers, a grizzled and older man, answered before digging through a small chest and producing a piece of parchment, the Royal seal on it broken. “The additional funds I requested have been denied by the Lord-Governor, as is the request for ships to better travel the coast. As far as orders go, we’re to remain here another year, as the expedition proper will begin in 1518; Additionally, we have orders to fulfill a request put forward by some royal scholars. Dig around, look for anything regarding the areas past. It gives the men something to do other than sit around and visit the local brothels..”

“May Voleus help us then, I don't think I can withstand another year of this god forsaken frontier. Especially digging around in the hot sun” The Knight stated, his complaint met with solemn nods and grumbles from the rest of the camp leadership.

“Your grumbles and whining won't change the Lord-Governor’s mind. We’re stationed on this frontier hell-hole until Aegos’ mind is content knowing we’ve discovered and seen all there is in the area. I only wish we were south, fighting with them now.” He tiredly leaned back in his seat, placing the parchment back onto the table.

“Any additional orders then, Commander?”

“Keep the watches as is, I’ll have some men south to get more supplies, as i'm sure we’re running low. As for the rest of you all, you’re dismissed, get back to your work”  His orders were met with various nods and grumbles as the men quietly filed out of the tent.

Dark envelops the world. Men and women and cities and kingdoms collide blindly under the black. The people are lost, and are without hope or purpose. They cannot see the Mother and the Father. We shall be the cresting rays of the sun, the promise of Morning.”

The Sermons of Guan Yu

The Nascent Morning was not just a kingdom. It was purpose; it was faith; it was destiny. As sure as the sun rose over a new day, the Morning Kingdom would rise over Aros and Naros.

This was the idea that the Guan dynasty had gone to such lengths to create and instill, travelling across the entirety of the known world to find the right place to give birth to a new age. Doubtless, the various peoples now united under the Kingdom did not believe in it as wholeheartedly as the Xian exile caste did, but at the very least they had trust in the people who had brought them their current fortune, and the promise their vision had.

With the birth of a new nation come the first reaches for contact, and Guan Liang dispatches emissaries to the various nations of Naros’ far east to make such. The Morning King makes offer of trade to the Ulyadar Northerners, the Eadni desert-dwellers, the Ashval who resist the Bloated Throats, and the Antigonids. Trade would be vital to the prosperity of the Kingdom. The Morning King begins the construction of a merchant guild in each of the cities of the Kingdom to accommodate and promote the future commerce, as well as two manufactories in Liangjing to start the production of luxury goods to send abroad.

The Kingdom’s early expansion had been successful, and in addition to the land of the mercenary-led Order during the rebellion of their mainland holdings, Guan Liang had seen the Virid Brume to the north pacified and consolidated. The forest had long been the subject of fear-instilling children’s tales, and many living near the treeline knew of at least one person who had gotten lost and been found a dessicated husk. Now though, the edge was safe and most no longer stared through the trees half-expecting their death. The long-dreaded giant spiders of the forest had too been largely pacified, now contained to their own areas, with progress even being made on their being tamed.

However, the Morning’s expansion was not to be ceased, and so the Black Brume to the west would have to be breached and a path made through it. The mountain range’s security was certainly not helped by the ubiquitous fog, and so Guan Liang decrees that he will establish the Morning’s control past the Black Brume. There was no rush when victory is inevitable, and so caution is taken and only one outpost established this year roughly halfway through the mountains in order to begin the claiming of the area. The settlers and builders and accompanied by 1,000 medium infantry and 500 medium cavalry in order to protect them from bandits, or worse.

Equally in the interest of establishing control in new areas, the Morning King decides it is time to map out and secure the crypt-city of Cairn, below Liangjing. Even if empty, the ruins could prove useful as storage or a refuge. Large numbers of scholars and laborers are hired out, and supplies bought for the expedition. Some 500 medium infantry are sent along with them to provide security and prevent pilfering by any unscrupulous workers.

Some 500 Heavenly Banners are called up out of the Xian nobles, the first of the finest that the Morning would employ. They are outfitted with the best equipment that money can buy. Meanwhile, the rest of the Kingdom’s armies are sent to the fortress on the border with the hated Bloated Throats, some 8,000 men in total.

Commonwealth of Ruhn

Life goes on mostly as normal in the Commonwealth. The usual economic investment is partially undermined by a magnificent new church in the capital proudly perched on a jutting cliffside. Reinforced by Loba-derived supports and stonework, it is yet another edifice surely to earn the Ruhnnites more favour with their patron Lord.

But despite these creations, strange rumours abound in the city of Ruhn as gossiping merchants and soldiers jabber in the markets and taverns. It is said that an envoy from the Kingdom of Five – a nation with little diplomatic ties to the Commonwealth beyond trade – arrived shortly after the expedition from the West returned. Whispers abound of foreboding visions from their heathen pig-king and requests for alliances and pacts to ward against the Western mountain men. The superstitious commoners are dizzy with fear at such a notion, and some are even angry that parliament did not even humour such requests. Visions, even from heathens, ought to be taken seriously. The temple Speakers work long and pious hours to suppress such ignorant thinking from the simple folk, and it is quietened for the most part.

The learned men of the School of Natural Philosophy pray for success in their endeavour to uncover the secrets of the ancient Loba levers. Almost a decade of study had now been invested into this structure and in that time a large city had sprung up around the site. The Lord Mayor of Leberstradt had already invested in a port and merchant quarters in anticipation of the ancient trade network reopening. Interest in the Loba and their ancient works increased drastically in the city forthwith, with recreations of Loba trinkets being sold in the market places. They are reasonable recreations all things considered, with the exception of having the symbols of Metar replaced by the righteous glyphs of He-That-Waits.

And speaking of He-That-Waits, the citizens and parliament of the Commonwealth of Ruhn are pleased to learn that such a pious and righteous people could be birthed from the repugnant barnacle that is the city of Lem. Parliament happily accepts an opportunity to engage with honest folk, and offer a representative of the Commonwealth to visit them in their new city.

Citizens hailing from the city of Shatterbridge quietly settle a new town on the other side of the isthmus. Mainly made up of retired soldiers and pioneer farmers, they establish themselves at the eastern entrance of the ancient bridge, mirroring the city over the water.

Curiosity grasps a small sect of Ruhnnite scholars about the Woeful Mountains to the east of the Seljin Straits. The time had come to finally end the mystery, and seek out the source of the Commonwealth’s frustration. A small party is sent south, skirting between the terrible deserts of the Loba and the distressing mountains. They would seek the answers they needed from the Kassadenian Guard at their very home. What was it they were guarding against, anyway...?

-The Office of Pioneering and Resettlement accidentally files a few papers in the wrong places, and a whole county in the countryside of Eichenholz is ordered to relocate precisely fourty-five kilometres to the east. This makes a number of less successful farmers quite happy for the opportunity of richer pastures but annoys the local magistrate, due to him no longer having anyone to rule over. (-9500 gold towards 2 farm stacks)

-Money. The root of all good things in the world. The Lord Mayors of Eichenholz and Shadowcliff tend to agree. (-17,000 gold towards 2 Merchant’s Guilds)

-Why send millet and barley south by road when one could simply ship the goods out of the city itself? A bustling port is established somewhat informally by unscrupulous and shady merchants in Shadowcliff. Due to the Lord Mayor being mostly incompetent, he simply throws money at the people who want to build it, and gives himself the rest of the day off. (-12,750 gold towards 1 port)

-With great bands of strangers popping up on the horizons of the known world, entrepreneurs open their own businesses to take advantage of future markets, and prepare themselves for opportunities that may present themselves...(-11,900 gold towards 2 trading companies)

-The Mausoleum of the Pious officially opens, much to the pleasure of the First Speaker and the Veiled Diviners. Melchior Hoffman himself officially opens it, and performs the first service within its splendid hall. The ancestors would no doubt be greatly pleased by such a wonderful structure built in their honour. (-19,000 gold towards a church in Ruhn)

-The eager scholars can smell success in the air! They were just so, so very close to cracking the great mystery! Whole fields of math had been discovered in the process of unraveling the functions of the Loba Levers, and morale is high. Will the plucky scholars finally work it out, or will this merely uncover the next riddle...? Find out on Monday, 20th of May, Belgoid Time! (-10,000 gold towards research into the Levers of the Divines, total of 60,000 gold invested)

-Plucky colonists from Shatterbridge make their way across the isthmus for the purposes of building a new town away from the hustle and bustle of the busy city. (-4750 gold towards a settlement)

-With most of the Loba River secured, and their curiosity of the dreadful western mountains sated, the hunters start a thorough search of the river east and south for the fabled, thick-skinned sandcrawlers. Their skin would fetch a fine price, and ones to find their home would be wealthy men indeed... (-5000 gold towards searching for the origin of the sandcrawlers)

-The expedition to the Kassadenians is prepared. First, they send a message ahead, but the group plans to leave before they get a reply (can’t allow them an opportunity to deny them a visit, can they?). Headed by Captain Konrad Ziet of the Second Cavalry Battalion, twenty horsemen would act as protection, with ten crag-runners serving as scouts and survivalists. Along with the civilian scholars, three acolytes from Ruhn come with them. Just in case the desert is more unforgiving than usual. (-1000 gold towards a small scholarly expedition to the Kassadenians)

THE PRINCEDOMS OF VOLARUCIO

image.jpeg.5b8e7289b733e178d8cc59b97fab977d.jpeg

The Volaruci Scholar, Carlos, in study in the Chapel of Knauledge.

”Company! Ground pikes!” came the thundering roar of a small sergeant, casually leaning on his spontoon, his chestplate gleaming in the afternoon sun. Beads of sweat ran down his stubbled face as the ‘company’ in question – little more than a rabble – tiredly went through a motion they’d been going through for hours. They had been having little success before, and they were scarcely doing any better now. “No! NO! You have to present them in such a way that the horse will stop! You stupid bastards will be trampled underfoot doing that!” shrieked the little sergeant, his face bright red with fury, his eyes flashing with malevolence. He looked as if he were about to say more but, fortunately for the men at hand, their officers arrived at the best possible moment.

“They are green yet, Sire.” Diego Alatriste announced to the Prince of Toulagoza, who was watching all with a critical eye. “But there is potential among them, it shall not be long before they form the core of a disciplined and well organised army, under your direct authority.”  The pikemen gladly seized their chance to stand to attention, happy to stop the drills and to lean their long pikes against their shoulders, almost relaxing as their liege trotted past, with his advisers in tow. Prince August examined the troops silently, but old Beltrán harrumphed loudly. “I see not why the retainers and levies of old are being replaced by these cur.” He spoke loudly, harshly, but watching the Viscount de Palma carefully, obviously hoping to provoke a reaction. However, the reaction came not from Alatriste, but from August.

“Peace, Beltrán, this matter is decided.” The lords trotted past more companies of men drilling with pike and bow, sword and crossbow, their identical breastplates and helmets polished to a high shine by raw and tired fingers afraid of the abuse thrust upon them by cruel and vindictive sergeants. “I desire a crown.” August said, quite flatly. “And to have and protect a crown, I must have an army. Not an army dependent upon the loyalty of you or Grandíz, my lord, but a well armed, well trained and well equipped army that serves me.” He brought his horse to a stop quite suddenly, stopping to watch a drill of cavalry across the field. “Grandíz will rise against me, Beltrán, as soon as he learns of this. He will seek to deny me both an army and a crown.” August grimaced uneasily. “His conniving ways have left him with a considerable girth of marital alliances. How many men can he raise against me?”

Ronbarra tapped the pommel of his saddle, pondering the question. “Three thousand horse perhaps. Fifteen thousand foot at least. He will turn every peasant out of their homes to fight for him, if needs must.” The grizzled horseman hesitated, unsure of his lord’s temper. “You have barely six thousand foot, Sire, and they are not ready for battle.” Don Diego glanced at him sharply, but reluctantly nodded his approval. “It will be six months before we can field a truly cohesive force. Until then, the Prince of Ronbarra is correct, Sire, they are not ready to fight.”

August gritted his teeth, anger in his eyes. “It will take him weeks to assemble his army. Best to rout them before they assemble. Keep the horse ready for action, I will not lose a day when he makes his move.” Sharply, he turned his horse and rode off to inspect the archers, with Ronbarra and Palma struggling to keep up.

Dim. Yes, dim was the best way to describe the Chapel of Knauledge, Carlos of Volarucio thought as he hurried along those damp and dingy corridors, a bundle of scrolls under his arm. His slipper-clad feet tapped sharply upon the cold stone floor as he rushed along, desperate to throw himself into his newest articles of study. A scroll slipped from his cluttered hands, and he struggled to reclaim it, while keeping his robes in a respectable order. To his dread, however, he was seen. “Carlos Rodriguez! You have been told before, boy, mind those scrolls!” snapped an older monk, clearly not caring that he chided a man near thirty as if he were ten.

Rodriguez ground his teeth, but refused to rise to the old man’s digging. “Yes, Brother.” he muttered, gathering his scrolls and hurrying on even faster, back to his small room, a simple monk’s chamber. Carefully, he placed the scrolls out on his desks, and prepared his quill and parchment, readying himself to study yet more of these texts – the ones the Chapel allowed him to witness, at least.

For hours, Carlos studied and wrote, copied out texts and memorized passages, but found little of interest to occupy himself in those records. He leaped to his feet, a recipe for bread with half a cup of honey crumpled in his fist, furious at the lack of progress he had made. He paced angrily, and hurled his bowl against the wall, concentrating furiously on his hand, attempting to conjure something.

He let out a grunt of rage, booting his chair loudly to the side, pace aggressively around the small room.  Eventually, a knock came at his door and a monk stuck his head in the door. “Carlos..?” The angry Volar Scholar turned sharply, face red. “What!?” he roared, and with a bright purple flash that filled the small chamber, and a hole punched straight through the sturdy wooden door, with a load bang. The monk looked at him with a mixture of shock and anger. When he spoke, his voice was terse and irate. “I think it best that you speak to the Abbot.”

“Before the days of land and sea, of earth and sky, of men and mages, there was but a pulse, a pulse that flooded emptiness with its steady purple glare, that quivered with the rawest of pure power, a pulse born from pure, unadulterated magic. That pulse was, in his true form, Edios, God of Magic and Master of Creation.

This world, the sun, the stars, the moon, the earth, the sea and all creation was born from the Will of Edios. With a single blinding purple burst, life was created, and the great lord created his Children and his Creations. His Creations, loyal and loving, worshiped their Father with wholehearted honestly, devoting much of their short lives to pleasing the lord Edios, but his Children, jealous and bitter creatures, grew envious of the adoration given unto their Father by these mortals.

The Children, led by Maravil, Lord of the Sun, grew steadily more jealous of Edios, and slowly began to consolidate their power. Over centuries, they garnered support and allies among the mortals, and finally they turned upon their lord Father and attempted to cast him down from the Altar of the Heavens. But Edios, finally suspicious of his offspring, had prepared for this betrayal. As the mortals, on the temporal plains of existence below, brutally warred against each other, fighting either for Edios or the Children, Maravil led his sibling to the very height of the Heavens and there confronted their father.

As Maravil prepared to strike down his Father, Edios struck. With a brilliant glow of purple light, he imprinted himself upon the very earth below, collapsing the path between Heaven and Earth, and trapping his treasonous Children. It was with these actions that Edios forged the Paths of the Spirits, the routes that connect the spiritual world to the temporal. His body dissolved and instead stuck to the Earth, forming a twisting and complicated series of paths.

Among mortals, the worshipers of the God of Magic were alone given the right to cross the Paths of the Spirits, to forever live in the Light of Edios. For this reason, warriors are the most prized worshipers of Edios, for it is upon warriors who have fallen that Edios must rely upon to defend the gates and paths, for the Traitors have ever wished to seize the last vestiges of their Father’s power, and constantly send their servants and creatures to attempt to seize the Paths, to finish their Father once, and for all.”

The Kingdom of Hilmedhi

The halls were cheering with laughter, though notably empty due to the navy being away at sea and some of the military gone with them. The King looked around the table and sighed a bit drinking from his cup before looking down the long jungle wood table that was engraved and lined with gold trim. “Sylas! Describe that Mirrored City, the landscape of it all.” Throck’s facial features were aging fast, though that is just what is wife saw. The men, cheered and clapped to hear the story encouraging Sylas to drink and tell about the mystic city.

He stood up, in a drunken stupor. Leaning in, and leaning out as he took one last gulp before slamming the cup down. “Alright, alright. Calm down.” He smiled wide, his pitch black facial hair covering most of it. “The city was packed full of people, giant creatures we will never witness on this continent. Giant gray beast, that could trample a unit of us Ironbreakers!” The crowd booed playfully, the hall mostly filled with the old guard. “Shhhh!” Sylas hissed. “The city itself, though was something truly to behold for what it lacked in ale. It was made up for in women! An old dwarf can still get down.” He chuckled and stood their taking in the moment, “The landscape around the city and Surya, was similar to our homeland. Humid, massive jungle, and mountain ranges. Nothing beats our homeland though.” He cracked a big smile, as the men cheered around the great stone hall. He even got the Throck the smile, which was seldom on his mind these days with his fleet away at sea tracking down the Mistreavers, and other concerning news on foreign fronts. The King saw the benefits of not keeping his people shrouded from the darkness that covered the world, but keeping these secrets is what lead to a happy nation. He broke his momentary glaze and looked back towards Sylas as he continued.

“The city itself was spectacular for the three days we were permitted to stay. Paved with gold, leading up to a magnificent temple. It did smell like ****, in some parts but that is for another time.” He looked around the table with the eyes wide of some of the newer Ironbreakers not yet experiencing the outside world. Engorging in these tales, “We made our way to a temple, which I suppose is their government of sorts. Fanatics of the sun, something I do not understand. Which I understand, was the reason for the mirrors, and the city that never sees the night sky.” He took a deep breath, “The people were not exactly as bright or educated as ours. Which might explain why their city smells like ****.” The group as a whole had a hearty laugh, in good fun. Sylas kept on, dragging out the conversation some more. Encouraging the crowd even more, as the King and Queen took their leave, heading for the bedroom. Exhausted from nothing but stress of events that were soon to come.

Noble Maharajas Scindia,

This letter should reach you with the corpse of one Captain Samo Apu, who took his own life on the day of writing. He is the first casualty of this wretched place, but though I have ordered the temple off limits I daresay he will not be the last. Discipline among the men remains strong for now, but morale has suffered since Apu's death and I do not think it would be wise to keep this garrison here longer than necessary. They have seen too much.

There is only so much that I can commit to writing, but since our last meeting I trust you will not have forgotten the urgency of the situation. If Surya will not act to defend its interests, then we must secure the resources to take matters into our own hands. I hope you will not think me overly dramatic if I say that the Enemy could arrive here tomorrow.

Your faithful servant,

Alu Kovind

“Cut this rat’s throat and leave him to rot.”

“No!” The man scrabbled at Kunwar’s boots, pleading in fear. “It was a mistake! I’m not one of them, that’s why they left me here!”

“So you’re a Black Sun and a liar,” the Maharajas smiled cruelly. “You’re not doing yourself any favors.” He nodded to a sergeant, who roughly kicked the prisoner to the sand they stood on.

“You want to live, you should start talking. Why am I finding Ravi’s vermin this far west?”

The man got to his knees, hurrying to speak. “There was a man, a Rajas like you, noble sir. Naig was his name, sir. He said he’d been sent to get something important from the capital. Wouldn’t say what. Was recruiting too, needed me as a guide. That’s all I was sir, a guide!”

“Of course you were. Why else are you here.” Kunwar scowled, glancing to the shipwrecks which littered the beach.  Once Ravi would have protected the innocent, would have stopped crimes like this, not caused them. Now he was a monster. His friend had turned his back on everything that was good in the world, had turned his back on him, and every day the pain of that betrayal tore at him. The Sattva no longer trusted him, for he had defended Ravi so many times before his treason. The people led sullen lives under his reign, terrified that they could be attacked at any moment. The worst was that he could do nothing about it - no one knew where Ravi Singh hid himself, and he always disappeared long before he could be followed.

The prisoner seemed hesitant, so Kunwar drew his own saber and laid it at his throat. “Why were you attacking ships?”

“T-there was something else, sir. When we was leaving Surya, w-we heard the Mahasattva was gone. Naig, he had friends in the city.  He found out what ship she was on.”

“And you caught her?” The Maharajas’ words were quiet, restrained.

“Weren’t easy! Girl may be small, but there was something about her...still, we- Naig and his fellows, they caught her all the same. Set off down the coast just this morning.”

The soldiers turned their eyes to Kunwar, for it was no secret that the Mahasattva, Padma Aswan, was his daughter. Since her disappearance unrest had wracked the countryside, and he had worked to quell it without a word to anyone about his personal feelings. He showed them now: no sooner had the man finished speaking than he was upon him, pressing him roughly into the sand, the sword digging into his skin.

“Is that all you know, you manure-eating gutter trash? A child-stealing rat like you would try and hold his tongue on something. It won’t work. Not with me. Where are they going?” He roared, and blood trickled onto the ground.

The man choked and sputtered, feebly pushing back against the blade. “Down the coast, to near Chittor, to pick up a boat to Ravibad! I don’t know where that is, I swear!”

Kunwar nodded. “Thank you,” he said, and then with a feral snarl he brought the saber back and slashed through the prisoner’s throat. His horse was brought across the sand, and he mounted, scowling at all his men.

“For too damn long have we let this demon menace us and our families. Now he reaches past our city, to the capital itself. He kills our brothers, and now he snatches our children? I have seen enough. Ravi Singh will go no further.” He turned his mount to the south, down the beach. “We ride until we catch these brutes...then we kill them all!”

Current Statistics

Expenditure (187,818 Gold)

Raiders from the jungle are nothing new, but some are worried about these in particular. The peasants living in the region take them for more of Ravi’s goons, while certain individuals in Aros suspect something darker drives their attacks. Either way, all that can be do for now is to fortify the area, and increase patrols. [5,000 Civil Watch to the east, city upgrades below.]

Routine farm expansion. [3 Farms; 15,000 gold]

Routine industrial expansion. [5 Factories; 37,500 gold]

Unbeknownst to the governments of the tamer regions, a ramshackle settlement has taken shape at the mouth of the Surukai river. Its inhabitants call it Ravibad, for they are there to serve the mad Tamas who would overthrow the righteous Sattva. And in Aros, another settlement forms south of the very edge of Suryan control, in the shadow of the evil mountain. There, citizens mine the silver in the rocks and aid the soldiers who wish to stave off the endless night. [2 Settlements; 10,000 gold]

More disciplined infantry arrive from Varchas, joining their brethren to form a significant fighting unit. [1,000 T3 Veteran Med. Inf; 20,000 gold.]

The great war mounts of the Mirrored City each need their own ship to transport across the sea. They tower above man and horse, they lumber forward with the confidence that very few things can hope to kill them. The great elephants of Surya have been trained since birth - trained to shrug off the puny blows of soldiers and to smash their ranks for the glory of Mihir. Their armor glitters in the sun, masterwork plates from the Hilmedhi peninsula which cover them head to toe... [2 Elite T3 War Elephants; Enchanted armor; 18,000 gold.]

The city of Surat makes a welcome contribution to the military: a company of skilled archers, ready to strike down foes in the Mirrored City’s name.[250 Veteran T3 Med. Archers; 5,500 gold.]

Thugs and lowlifes gather around the growing army of Aros, swelling the camp when it moves. They make illicit profit from the vast flows of gold that follow every army, but most seem to be ardent fanatics of Mihir, so Maharajas Scindia tolerates them in the hope that they’ll fight when called. [1,000 T1 Light Infantry; 2,000 gold.]

Surat and Varanasi grow quickly, and are given fortifications in order to resist increased violence in the east. Meanwhile, the town of Surada grows rich as a major settlement on the Suryan sea. [Three cities and guilds; 72,000 gold.]

More chests of gold are shipped to the Hilmedhis, sweetening the pot to continue providing service to Surya. [1,000 gold (4,000 with equipment profit)]

Special construction. [2,000 gold.]

[4,818 gold remaining]

Herzakan Marches

A lone sentry stood watch upon the wooden ramparts that ran the perimeter of one of Bourdeleaux’s border outposts. It was hastily constructed, though would serve as the anchoring point for the new frontier that the Empire would continue to push outwards. Bourdeleaux’s ambitions were great, but came at the expense of sovereign nations. They justified this to themselves as they told themselves that they were leading these stray souls to salvation. Yet now, the realm of Bourdeleaux bordered that of the Herzaka, a nation of nomadic horseman who knew no boundaries? How would they respect Bourdeleaux’s rightful claim, if at all?

Their warning was ominous, though their point had been made. Clearly, the Herzakans did not take well to the Bourdelaic presence encroaching upon their lands. A single red arrow, shot by some five riders who mysteriously disappeared. Whether it was a threat or a warning, the Black Army mobilized to protect the settlers who had just begun to establish themselves within the region. Fast moving Cavalry and  Infantry was peeled away from the Carrow Siege and stationed to the Northeast. No chances would be taken on the frontier. Caltrops, stakes, and barricades were to be erected in a timely fashion. Rumors of these horse lords spread far and wide. The Black Army soldiers were anxious, having never yet met such a foe.

Spears pointed outwards and bows at the ready, they awaited any movement on the horizon.

Carrow Citadel

The siege was as unmoving as ever. Camp life was monotonous, and there was no attempt from the Carrow defenders to break out - at least, that they knew of. It was perhaps that promise that stopped many men from deserting out of boredom. The Black Army was used to waging quick and decisive campaigns, and had not once expected to meet such an insurmountable fortress. Yet, their discipline held true. Many had to resort to creating their own means of entertainment. However, the bonds with one another were as strong as the armor they wore upon their backs.

It was their only hope that they could live long enough to see the Siege through to its end.

Unbeknownst to the common footsoldier, key intelligence had reached the ears of the Master of Troops. And now, His Imperial Majesty’s finest - the Special Tactics Group were now deployed to investigate. An opportunity had arisen, begging to be exploited.
