Explorers log Day 1005

“The Days grow longer as spring nears, we have come far since our departure from kaldvask six years ago, new men arrive with supplies yearly to supplement our small losses but i am confident we will make progress, we have begun to prepare to move south. Our journey is still far from end and we must remain vigilant in our duties. Our group will be the first from our nation to explore the world, the ancestors of auldau would be proud at our prowess, but we are far from done  yet.”

Franz closed his journal and packed it a way in his rucksack, the clips buckling and the hard leather flexing as he lifted it onto his back, men around the camp continued to strike the camp and prepared to march onwards, a few men ate but most were simply busy preparing for the long march, it would only be a matter of time before they reached their homes once more, or so they were promised...

It was well past midnight when Padma slipped her bonds. She was tied to a tree, left under the night sky and treated brusquely by her captors. She suspected she’d have been beaten too, but the one who led them, Naig, had kept them away. She understood their anger, even if she didn’t sympathize. Kidnapping an eleven year old girl was meant to be easy, and it would have been, but something had come over her when they had boarded the ship. The bow she carried was suddenly weightless, and the arrows could not miss. She hadn’t counted how many of the pirates had gone down before the inner fire had subsided.

Now the same fire rose within her, the same voice told her to be free. But she was being watched. The party was camped outside a seaside village where they waited for transport, and none wanted to lose their prize. So a large man sat with an intimidating club, grunting at her every time she struggled within the ropes. The rest were in the town, taking whatever loot they liked from the inhabitants.

Padma heard the voice encouraging her, and she knew the time had come. Soon enough, when they had had their pleasure, more thugs would come to watch her. This one could be dealt with.

“You,” Padma said, slowly working her fingers outside the ropes so that they pointed at the man. “Why do you do this?”

The thug ignored her, a single grunt the only evidence that she’d been heard. The voice was stronger inside her, and she began to struggle, slowly wriggling her way free. She kept her eyes on the guard, who could not ignore this at least. He said nothing, just hefted his club and began to stalk towards her. Without thinking, her fingers snapped towards him, stiffened into a claw, and suddenly the man was screaming, his skin going red, blistering, melting before his very eyes. By the time he fell sizzling to the ground, Padma was already squirming her way out again.

Had someone heard the scream? She thought not: the air was still full of other cries, from raucous bandits and terrified peasants. Still, she hurried, and crept toward the town as soon as she was free.

Clouds covered the moon, and she had no trouble reaching the village’s narrow streets. An old woman was being dragged into an alleyway by three of the men, and for a moment Padma steeled herself to help, but the voice stopped her. There was a house near the docks. It was important.

Nobody stopped her. Nobody saw her. She crept through the shadows, her golden eyes darting from doorway to doorway until at last she could hear snippets of conversation in a large two-story house. She listened through the shouts and the sound of waves close by.

“...we don’t have many left, Naig. We keep her with us and we’ll be fighting so…”

“...aren’t any use without her. Ravi would se……..back sooner or later, and…….so easy to find the Mahasattva when she’s nice and comfortable in a city.”

“Ravi gave us one mission. Would it…….so hard to stick to the plan just once?”

Padma crawled to a window, and peered into the room. Two men stood arguing, both tall, thin, and irritated, But her gaze was drawn to the table between them, where two golden loops lay strewn next to each other. Armbands. She didn’t know how she knew, but they were the reason she was here. But how to get them?

“....reason why I’m in charge and you aren’t, Alu. When we bring Ravi both pieces of the puzzle, he’ll take far more notice than if we’d just done the bare minimum. It’s called initiative, Alu, and you’d be wise to develop some.”

“You know how far it is to Ravibad? This is an awful ri-”

A trumpet cut through the night, and the whinny of a horse. Both men looked up, startled. There was another trumpet, and shouts of alarm from inland.

Naig cursed. “We’ll have to take what we can get. Go and fetch the prisoner, I’ll get a dinghy ready. Hopefully these drunken idiots can buy us some time.” Alu hurried out, and the other man scooped up the two golden armbands, pushing his way out the other door. Padma saw him clearly, for the moon showed itself at last, illuminating his escape down a long dock, where a small boat waited.

He never made it even halfway. Stabbing down like the shaft of a cosmic spear, a beam of pure white light slammed into the dock ahead of him, instantly shattering it into a thousand pieces. The shock throw Naig onto his back, splinters dug into his skin, and when he managed to get to his feet the same girl was standing behind him, with the same fire in her eyes that he had seen before.

Others came that way soon enough, fleeing from vengeful cavalry. They paid Padma no attention, and Padma watched them in silence, for their fate was sealed. The Black Suns had no respect for civilians, indeed disdained them, so the lancers had no respect for them. They were hunted down and killed like vermin, and only after the last of them was gone did a man approach her.

“You’re Padma Viswan?”

She nodded, looking up from the armbands she had gone to such trouble to find. They were too big for her to wear.

The man sighed. “I am Maharajas Viswan of Chittor. We’re here to take you home.”

A long moment passed before she nodded, and got to her feet. The man stayed near her protectively, and led her to the company’s camp. In the morning, they would take her away. But to where, she couldn’t know.

“The world will not forever languish in this age-old night. Even now, the Twilight is upon us, and Morning draws ever closer. But the inevitability and justness of our path is not cause to relent. While night reigns, we toil. Only when the Promise is fulfilled may we rest.”

The Sermons of Guan Yu

The baby-steps of the Morning Kingdom had been taken, and now Guan Liang was ready to begin making strides. The Bloated Throats that threatened the western border of the Kingdom, and indeed the entire far east, were growing in strength. The Kingdom would have to do the same.

The outpost in the Black Brume mountains is completed, and already people are flooding in from across the densely populated kingdom. Guan Liang is asked to give the new town a name, and he decides upon Heifeng. With the Kingdom’s presence in the mountains secured, orders are given for the construction of a second outpost on the far side on the mountains, thereby locking down a route through the Black Brume.

Meanwhile, in the city of Luoyang, the fortified city on the Bloated Throats’ border, a manufactory begins construction. Guan Liang seemed particularly dead set on making the city a beacon of civilisation and prosperity in the face of savagery and death. The fervour for the Promise of Morning would bring boons to the people of Luoyang, and would be lorded over the fiendish barbarians across the border.

In the same vein, a further 1,000 Heavenly Banners are recruited in the name of safeguarding the Kingdom against the Throats. Once again, they are equipped with the finest steel arms and armour the Kingdom has, and they are to be sent to join the bulk of the armies around Luoyang once trained and outfitted.

The War in Naros continues as Numeria marches towards Ischyros, sweeping aside the remnants of the routed army and leaving it scattered in its wake. Word is that the Symon Emperor is mustering another force, large and fresh, but it will take time, and now Ischyros is at risk. Or at least, it was, until whispers come from the east. A new invader, an opportunist. Caught between a hammer and an anvil, Numeria falters, and the advance on Ischyros halts, the prize slips from Aemyr’s grasp like a diamond turned to sand.

Word drifts from Trident that Tritimus, governor of the city in all but name, was found assassinated in his own bedroom, his massive gut split open like a tent-flap, spilling his guts onto bloodied blankets. The culprit is nowhere to be found, and Jeryn of House Inkwater, the man who rises to replace him, is quick to end the search.

The Bloated Throats continue to rampage unopposed through Ashval, slaughtering thousands. It is said that Lusta Kanve is holed up near the mountains with a few hundred soldiers, defending a cave from a force of fifteen thousand, but little information goes through, and less goes out.

No sign of the Mistreaver and his ilk, precious little can be found in the frozen northern expanses on a normal day and this year, nothing.

Melda, in a break from its characteristic isolation, settles a new mainland colony in the spring, as its ruler breaks away from the deep silence that settled over the nations foreign politics.

The Kingdom of Five

As the pray continues, Dakkar is yanked into a another vision. (Discord)

Some progress has now been made on this dream of Swinium. The first promising alloys have been shaped, but they are brittle, and hard to shape despite their strength. Clearly, there is still work to be done.

The Republic of Danwent

The Cliffside road is mostly over by now. A large part of it consisted of simply levelling the rough terrain, and tossing boulders into the deep sea beside them. Only a few dozen men tripped and fell into the sea during the construction process. Success! The rest of the republic sees middling progress, though much of the gold must be diverted to the cliffside road if it is to be completed.

The dense jungle does not make for an easy trip, and many settlers and soldiers are killed by disease, accidents, and these curious blood-red tigers that occasionally attack them, charging in like maddened bulls and taking dozens of stabs and arrows before they heave out their last, furious breath. But the settlement is finally carved out, though the people who live within these dense jungles will have to toughen up soon, or die. (-150 legionnaires to attrition)

The Kingdom of Bulgar

Monsters?? How rude.

Beyond that, construction goes as planned within the Empire, and Korkus’ children seem to be made of strong stuff, kicking and moving around before they are even born, they burden the mother with their size.

The Fortress Libraries

The House of Blackmarrow agrees to send 500 men to aid the Fortress Libraries in their endeavors. The Symon Empire refuses to send anyone, however, as it ignores the threat and focuses on the west.

A man in Trident finds the Librarians. He is shady, shifty, but he asks for help, help in investigating the murder of Tritimus, governor of the city.

The Antigonid Dynasty

The area around Asterion seems wild, untouched by man. Truly they delve into savage lands, as they find exotic beasts only heard of before in tales, such as tigers, hippopotamus and other such strange creatures. But there are no traces of man within this thick jungle, nothing but animals and untamed country.

The Empire of Bourdeleaux

The only passage is a small, dangerous cliff-side path, delving sometimes deep into rocky uneven valleys, other times ranging into the permasnow, where vicious winds replace vicious falling stones. A brutal path, and the scouts report seeing fires, and watchers, deeper within the mountains. But the army marches forth, to the foot of the great Roots. (Discord)

The Duchy of Ulyadar

Assirbanakh, obviously, has not moved. It waits there, for those who wish to ask. (Discord)

The lone vessel follows the mist at a distance, but as he goes forward, the scratchy call of madness leaps forth, eating away at his mind, and leaving him with two choices. To go forth and succumb, or to return, before his sanity is flayed from his mind like a fragile veil. Around him is naught but freezing water, ice and mist.

The Galaharian League

Greenleaf, it seems, is some sort of painkilling plant. When chewed, it dulls both the mind, but also the limbs. While research remains to be done if the League wants to extract its full potential, chewing on it has already become a passtime for the guards around the settlement. Though that does not always work in their favor, as more than a few have disappeared, what with the greenleaf being  beneath the eves of the forest.

The adepts are already moderately proficient in guiding winds. Nothing major, but they can give the gusts of wind rough directions.

The Kingdom of Fyr-Darrick

War on the horizon, and a battle in a hilly land, of burnt trees and ash.

The Princedom of Volarucio

The Volarucians receive a polite, but firm letter from the Trident, requesting an update on their plans to repay the loan. Beyond that, there is little to say. An army on the rise, and rare few viable targets. Where might they be going?!

The Kingdom of Hilmedhi

The Hilmedhi engineers have an easy enough time devising a sort of pulley system that is able to lift stones up using a large crank operated by significant amounts of men, or horses. While rudimentary, it can lift far larger amounts of rock than simple men.

The Commonwealth of Ruhn

A great clank and a groan. The entire cliff seems to shudder as the Levers sway and grumble, noises rising from deep, deep within the cliff. Deeper than it was thought that the mechanisms went! But then the large basins sway, rock. The scholars are cooped up in a large room, jutting out from the edge of the cliff upon one of the arms of the levers. They tank levers the size of men and turn old wheels, chains rattling beneath their feet. Then the basins begin to move. The ship caught within one of them a month or two ago finally reaches the river below, and above, a new ship begins its trip. After centuries, a new road to the east has been opened. (+6000 G per turn, Levers of the Five Divines.) (New trade route East is open.)

The crawler’s skin is tough, and hard to handle. The researchers will have to hack at it a little longer, hidden within their dark tents as the winds toss sand around their little camps like swirling demons.

The Kingdom of Icefeld

The explorer, after long months of walking, canoing down rivers and scaling mountains, reaches a new sea. A warmer sea, less unforgiving the blasting, freezing monsters of the north. This one gives onto a Meldan city, surrounding the Grelhau canal, the only passage between the sea of Krel and the sea of Five. He is welcomed by the Meldan’s, and given food and shelter, in exchange for tall tales about the north.

The explorer caravel to the north manages to slip through the dense ice-packs in the high days of summer, slipping around the Ulyadar peninsula. The sailors see the tall, eerie glaciers to one side, and to the other, they claim to see great banks of mist, then they are gone, and every day brings them to warmer seas, until they arrive in an island port and are welcomed by people of a yellowish tint, with slanted eyes and stiff manners. The Order.

Surya

To get to the bottom of this, then men will have to delve into the jungle itself… Are they brave enough to take the risk?

Republic of Danwent – 1519

A chaotic year to come, yet the Republic intends to weather it as unharmed as possible. The declaration of war from the Empire of Bourdeleaux towards Numeria comes as a shock, it is completely unexpected for most, given the supposedly neutral relations between the two, though others have predicted it to happen. The decade old defensive treaty once signed under Aywentos’ Rumarii’s guidance, which also politically bankrupted him back then, was the pending topic for the Senate of Danwent this time.

With Thoryus Armon leading an army towards East, the head of the Stalwart Guard was out of reach to partake and lead his party to the vote. Theodos Abemani was with the League, leading the fleet of the Republic to find the steam stealers to defeat them for good. Kaylius Sarnari was in Fyr-Darrick, on a diplomatic mission. Otto Mikkelbach as well, to the Empire of Grimsborith (or Bulgar). Leading senators Aywentos Rumaari, Dionius Liber and Royolus Artonii were present to host the vote. And the question was simple. Shall the Republic join the war in defense of the Kingdom of Numeria, or shall it stand aside.

On a more pleasant note, the Republic officially announces and invites many of the neighbouring realms to the Second Games of the Republic. The contests are including Spearthrowing, Running, Swordfighting, Archery, Riding, Hand to hand, Sailing, Rowing, Boulder hurling (a favorite of the citizens of Hybria) and Wrestling. Ten contests, and each winner shall be sponsored by the Republic with 1,500 unmarked gold coins, as well as 5,000 gold coins for the overall winning nation.

Invited are the Symon Empire, the Empire of Bourdeleaux, the Kingdom of Numeria, the Men of Äulem, the Trident, the Volaruccian Princedom, the Kingdom of Fyr-Darrick, the Librarians, the Kingdom of Eadni, the Hilmedhi Kingdom, the Commonwealth of Ruhn, the Passan Cities, the Galaharian League, the Herzaka and the Chapel of Knauledge. If word reaches other realms, they are cordially invited to send entourages to be verified and entered as contestants in the games they wish to partake.

It was another evening, as the army of the Republic rests in the realms of the Volaruccian Princedom to march further East the next day. A messenger bird brings a note to Thoryus Armon, written upon it the decision as to what the Republic has decided. In the light of candles, the Senator reads:

“The Republic stands by. Senator Thoryus Armon and General Hasoran Alaari are to continue East. Primary objective remains to aid the Librarians in defeating the Bloated Throats or contain them.”

The senator did not even finish reading the note, after the first few words, his fist crumples it in anger, only to toss it into a corner afterwards. Thus he made a decision, for once he returns, there shall be consequences.

More Roleplay might be added, once some things are sorted out.

Nation Roleplay:

“Use your ******* legs!” The foreman shouted from his blood red face as every man in the shipyard pushed and pulled with many of the men in the water pulling on the boat. Every heave left up an inch of land until a great crack threw the men in the water forward into the ocean. The boat had broke free of its chains and slithered quickly into the sea. Cheers erupted as the first galley of the navy floated successfully ahead of them and down the coastline more and more of these ships began to hit the waters all to form up in the capital.

To the north of this port town marched a force thousands strong, the forces of the king marched to siege the Meldan’s whom no relationship blossomed anymore. The first army arrives right outside the canal built years ago and with it the keep and city standing over them, a large and precarious event to transpire. Ser Hog personally has been told to lead this assembly and before the Auldhau stood him shouting up at them with his oinks and squeals. “Give up your arms and city, those who govern here will be left in charge but as vassals to the king in the mud!” Not far away stood the Keep of Ockham, preventing any Meldan pushes into the Kingdom itself.

In the south marched another group of men, more importantly the most quick of the army arrives in the south using the keep there as a base of operations. Thousands of horses and rangers flood the town there in an attempt to force the town into capitulating. A bloody affair for all involved indeed.

ADRIAN’S CORRESPONDENCE

To Princess Sophia of Bourdeleaux,

My dear daughter, I hope you are well. It has been sometime since we have last spoke. Your husband assures me you have been a wondrous wife, though what father would I be did I not check in myself. You should travel back the Imperial City whenever you have the chance. I’m sure you’d find the renovations to the Gardens, quite to your liking. That, and your Mother would love to see your face once more. I worry for her. She has taken the death of your brother far harder than I’d ever have imagined. Perhaps it’d mean all that much if one of her children were to return to her embrace.

To Crown Prince Philip,

My son. I know you never expected in your lifetime to be thrust into this position. But now, more than ever must you take charge of your own actions. A new order is rising in Naros, and Bourdeleaux seeks to be top among the pecking order. I know you were never fond of playing soldier as a boy, but I beseech that spend time among my general staff and advisors, for they will one day be yours. Regardless, I entrust the Imperial City to your hands. It is that time of year where I must venture to Carrow and ensure that all has not fallen to ****. I’m sure you understand. With that aside, try not to get too drunk and do not invite those whores into my throne room.

To the Lord Theobold of Onofrio,

My longtime friend and ally. I hope you are in good health and the men be in high spirits. It pains me that I cannot venture past Roots of the World with you. Yet, there is important work that needs to be done back in the Heartlands. Bureaucracy and land management - the Siege of Carrow, which still must be dealt with. Nevertheless, while I take care of business in the west, I expect great things from you in the East. Vast, new lands ripe for the taking. Potential converts to the Faith, and sprawling cities with vast wealth I’d reckon. There is no other man that I trust than to fulfill our destiny than you. Truly it inspires me how many freemen enlist for the Great Cause, all of whom will be sent eastbound at the turn of the year. You’ll have all the resources you’ll need. I’ve seen to it personally. With this blank check, I expect to hear of great things in the coming years.

And as for the matter of the so-called Symon Empire… Give them no ground and do not falter in their presence. As vast as they may be, they have thus far faltered in their campaign against Numeria. The easterners are weak.., riddled by years of strife and warfare. Fate smiles upon us, for there has been no greater opportunity. The time has come - and the angels ride with Saint-Villard. Let us show them the true might of the Great Sun. Let us test the mettle of this King Aemyr the Mad.

BY THE GRACE OF GOD, Adrian II Olivier of the House of de Solis, forever August, Emperor of Bourdeleaux, King of the Westfalians, Luombards, and the Beninbingians, Prince of Souvois, Lord Paramount of the Carrowlands, Grand Duke of Lorent, Duke of Selroc, Vytrelor, Upper and Lower Avaroc,Yvonne, Nor, Rindilea, Chanteverry, Trinovantes, and Plecy, Margrave of the Herzmark, Count-Palatine of Detrice, Count of Senzia, Gentra, Courderellia, and Vespani, Viscount of Bourdogne, Lord of Sunspire and the Northern March, Protector of the Solar Faith, First Among Men, etc. etc.

Commonwealth of Ruhn

“You knows the story of that there bridge, sirrah?” the toothless ferryman wheezed to the old soldier.

“Can’t say that I do.” Jurgen replied wearily. He glanced back to his wife, who smiled apologetically to him as she cradled their child. He had walked away to distract the old man, as his constant yammering was keeping his young son awake.

“They says the Lobans built it!” He cackled. He pushed the ferry’s rudder to the right, and a shadow passed over the boat. The enormous, isthmus-spanning bridge loomed over them like cliff, and the boat passed through a decrepit hole in a rusted, hundred-meter portcullis. The old man cackled again, as he watched the family stare upwards at the majestic structure.

x2EhjCG.jpg

“Them Lobans were a miserly lot, not fond’er getting thar feet wet ‘n such. So’z they made this ‘ere bridge to save their fancy feet from the damp!” Another bout of wheezing cackles seemed to echo beneath the bridge as they passed back into the open air.

“Folks weren’t as tough as they is now! Mountain folk were still praying to them Loban fires too, I reckon!”

“Loban fires?” Jurgen asked, half-interested.

“Aye, sirrah! Lobans prayed to fires, they did! S’all sorts ‘a fire whittlings on the bridge! They called the fire ‘Moterr’ and painted rocks pink and scribbled Moterr’s face on ‘em!” The kook shook his head with a sad chuckle.

“Ign’rant savages, they was. They didn’t know ‘bout the bones. Gotta pray to the bones, sirrah!” He capped off this statement by rattling a set of fingerbones he had on a necklace.

Jurgen nodded his head slowly, now deeply regretting taking such a cheap ferry. The trip to Brakkenbridge seemed to drag on longer than it should. It might be faster had the old man refrained from ducking and weaving beneath the bridge as they sailed.

“‘Course, maybe it were a heathen wardin’ ritual ‘er somethin’. Put Moterr’s face on everything, an’ keep away the Mountain Ghosts!” He placed a kiss on his fingerbones, and murmured a prayer to them.

Once more the old man’s statement piqued Jurgen’s curiosity, if only for a second. “Mountain ghosts?” He queried half-heartedly.

“Aye, aye, aye! Evil spirits that lay to the east in the cursed mountains! They’z bereft o’ peace and no folks want to calm their tortured and dishonored spirits! ‘Cept for me, sirrah!”

Now Jurgen was paying attention. He turned to the old man and spoke sternly. “You have been to the eastern mountains? Did you see anything?”

“Eh?” The madman stared back at Jurgen, as if surprised someone was listening to him. “O’ course I have! The grey peaks of dismay! The dread, sirrah! The dread! The fear that gnaws at your ears an’ worms into your skull! They are watchin’, sirrah! They is always watchin’!”

The old man shivered, and hugged his sides while his wild eyes darted around the calm waters beneath the bridge. “Sometimes I can feel the eyes on me again. Like I was back. Deep in the crumbling peaks and lost to the world. The hills lookin’ all the same. The maps, worthless. And the feeling on the back o’ your neck that something’s there. Something’s waitin’ for you to get tired and to look the wrong way only for a second. Like something don’t want you there. And the dreams...”

The old man paused as he stared blankly out into the water. His grip tightened on the rudder and his jaw clenched.

“A single, unblinkin’ eye. Peerin’ at you from the dark places of your soul. Never approaching. Never leaving the shadows. Jus’ watchin’ you. Always.”

“Why did you go to the mountains?” Jurgen asked quietly.

“The old man cackled loudly, kissed his fingerbones, and muttered a prayer beneath his breath.

The trip was fairly quiet after that.

The Levers of the Divines – the world’s greatest engineering marvel – now returned to clunking, clattering, churning life. The enormous construct lifted ships from the Hungry Sea up the steep cliff sides and waterfalls into the Loba River, which would then sail off to the free city at the end of the waterway. Every city and town that had positioned itself along the winding river happily rubbed their hands with glee, knowing that they finally had a reason to be living in the perpetual hellscape that was the Loba Desert. The scholars at the School of Natural Philosophy are ecstatic, and allow themselves a singular, triumphant ‘hurrah’ within their lecture halls before getting back to their studies. There were other Loba treasures to rebuild and investigate, after all...

-With a larger budget than previous years, Lord Protector Charles Ortmeir petitions parliament to forge thousands of sets of armour for the frontline soldiers. The idea of his men facing a force like the Hakkan with mere iron mail both worries and irritates him. (-42,000 gold towards T3 armour for 9,250 soldiers)

-The unceasing efficiency of Ruhnnite pioneering has become a near artform. Not only can cities be erected quickly, city expansion itself is now been standardised and optimised. Of course, with standardisation comes rules, and with rules comes hundreds of pages of new paperwork. The Office of Pioneering and Resettlement must sure be pleased. (-42,750 gold towards upgrading three cities)

-Two new settlements are plonked down, officially ending phase one of the Commonwealth’s official expansion plan. (-9500 gold towards two settlements)

-A group of plucky leathersmiths have made their way down the southern fork of the Loba river. Hoping to turn the implacable sandcrawlers into a profitable armour business, they spear and study the skin with great attention. (-5000 gold towards sandcrawler armour)

-Seeking trade with the strangers to the far west, an expedition is sent out to find and offer trade. Now that a major artery of trade was open, nothing was beyond the reach of the Commonwealth’s envoys. (-2000 gold towards Surya expedition)

-Another missive is sent to the Free Cities requesting trade. Now that the river had opened again, surely they would be interested in mutually beneficial commerce? If not, well...

Antigonid Dynasty

1519
Music

Triumph in Mongerellia

Triumph in Mongerellia had come swiftly and effectively. A short campaign of only several years had begun with minor setbacks, only to end in a resounding victory after the ‘Battle of Fool’s Ridge’ as Aegos’ army was calling it, an obvious play on the humiliating Battle of Fool’s Crossing. Nonetheless, after short negotiations at the Eadni capital, the remaining Mongerellian strongholds and cities threw open their gates for the approaching army. Koribalis and Sûm were brought into the fold, local officials and governors were raised to equivalent positions. Ser Euryleon Aetes, for his nearly life long service to House Antigos and skillful diplomacy is named Lord of Sûm. Lord Byrron, in exchange for his excellent leadership both during battle and campaign, is named Lord-Governor of Voreia Mongerellia (North Mongerellia).

In Pelos the army returns as triumphant and extravagantly as they had left. Banners flew from every window as horns and drums sounded, welcoming the returning soldiers. At the front of the columns, King Aegos VII with a crown golden laurels on his head led the procession. Behind him, the various Lords and Generals rode. Wagons with paintings depicted the great victory over the Mongerellians and displayed the army’s martial prowess rode throughout the city. Barrels of gold and captured loot followed behind the aforementioned wagons, now displaying the great wealth brought to the Freehold through conquest. Truly, the army of Aegos VII was the finest in the far east.

In the Royal Palace, King Aegos VII was once more crowned and bestowed with more titles by now surrendered Mongerellian officials, Latesian Aristocracy, Antigonid Nobles, and Holy men alike. The young king entered the palace as humble as one in his position possibly could be, but arose King Aegos VII, Voleus’ Chosen, Redeemer of the East, Titan of Averos, Hegemon of the Latesian Freehold, Triumpher of Mongerellia, and Upholder of House Antigos, truly a new man.

Return to Averos

A frequent waystation and bustling area of activity for those who remained loyal to the House of Antigos following the collapse, Averos has been the closest thing to core territory many Antigonid rulers could claim to control or rule over. Despite this, the dynasty was forced to abandon the isle millenia ago for a variety of reasons. Aegos’ ancestors had vowed to return to the island and reclaim it for the house, though it would be Aegos who would finally act on such vows. In early 1519 the first wave of Latesian settlers are dispatched to the Island. The planned settlement, known as Solace, is hoped to become a bustling port and a strong buffer to the capital, should invaders attempt to take it by sea.

Activity

A victory had been secured for the Fey and their close allies, the Darkyrian countryside was sure to fall to their army in this year and any potential reinforcing of the forces of death would be slowed once their capital had been surrounded. Soon the realm of pestilence and decay would find itself surrounded by forest with the Greenthroat once more flourishing in this cursed land. Whats more a point of interest the Adepts had spied as they communicated with the birds and beasts of the forest would now be open to be taken, the War in the Forest was drawing to its end and with it new information is sure to be revealed about the mysterious continent spanning forest that they call home.

Losses still needed recouping however, it was now time to rebuild troops that were lost in the recent battle, even if there were relatively few. The Fey knew they had to keep strengthening their army as opposed to the lethargy that gripped them during the first siege. More heavy and medium infantry would be recruited in the coming years in order to keep the military dominance of the Fey around during this war. As such the treasury would be put back to work ensuring sustained economic growth along with meeting the demands of the Military. The more Liberal Princes of the homeland growing dissatisfied as they had hoped for another year of pure economic growth.

Prince Anaeran would find himself attending the Second Republican Games after his most recent success commanding the Cavalry in the battle in another great success and outshining his previous achievement. The young Fey Prince now a veteran of multiple battles and earning a reputation as a skilled fighter, rider, archer and having a beauty that most foreigners that is what is considered stereotypical of the Fey by many foreigners. “There are those who cannot fathom an end to Night. There are those who wish to preserve what they have eked out under the Night. They refute the destined, and the righteous. They refuse the Promise of Morning. They must not be suffered.”

The Sermons of Guan Yu

Fa Xian had not slept for some time. The days and nights had blurred together since the expedition. He saw and felt the cold, undying rage in that black-crowned skull’s eyes every time his were closed. The image followed Fa everywhere now, save for during prayer. Even that haven was tinged with the fear that it would be taken away.

And yet, the young priest continued his study of the black gems without his resolve faltering. The Morning King himself had assigned this task to Fa, and his dedication to the Morning’s Promise was at the core of his being. He would shed light on this most recondite of treasures.

It was the remembrance of this goal that stirred Fa from his malaise, and he turned his gaze back toward the object of his studies. A black gem, taken from Cairn. Under the crystal magnifier, the insides were clearly visible. The cloudy interior swirled and churned within the gem without end, and every so often Fa was sure he could see something moving among the smoke. He noted all this down, omitting the latter part, which he was sure was simply his sleep-deprived delusions.

The whispering returned louder this time, Fa was sure of it. He could not tell if there were more voices. He did not really want to think about them. He turned away once again, waiting with bated breath for the voices to end. At first they had always stopped when he looked away. They lingered for increasingly longer nowadays. Especially long this time. Panic began setting in his heart. He clenched his eyes shut, and held his hands over his ears. He kept waiting.

Then the Black King’s skull resurfaced in his mind. The voices grew louder. Fa could feel all his perception being drawn into those two baleful eyes. They came closer and closer, fog stirring within. His eyes now refused to open, and the whispers had become a hushed and hissed cacophony. Fa suddenly felt the sensation of falling as he was pulled into the black eye, and he was soon swallowed completely.

The clouds were now all around him. Shapes, barely discernable, danced and leaped all around him, their movement so lacking in grace and fluidity that Fa felt deeply uneased by them. He strained his eyes to make them out, but the fog was too thick. Fa tried to move closer, and felt slight relief at the return of his ability to walk. As soon as he moved, though, the shapes ceased their uncanny dance. In fact, they weren’t moving at all. He could see now that they were humanoid in shape, but impossibly thin.

A deep dread filled Fa, the same complete death of hope and love and joy he had felt in the Black Room. The clouds were dissipating, and the still motionless shapes were becoming clearer and clearer. He could see now that there were many more of them, they too motionless.

Suddenly the rest of the fog cleared completely, and Fa Xian was struck with absolute horror. Black extending forever around him, and the shapes’ nature was revealed – hordes of corpses in various stages of decomposition, though most appeared entirely skeletal, all bearing black gems for eyes. They too extended forever into the distance, but none of them were moving, frozen mid-dance.

He blinked, and in the instant his eyes were shut they had all turned toward him. Thousands upon thousands of the dead stared at Fa with hatred. Fa did not have time to take in the magnitude of the sight before they all surged towards him with unnatural speed. Dozens began clawing at his flesh, scouring his body to the bone. Fa tried to scream, but couldn’t, even as his ribs were pulled open and his lungs tore out. Eventually his entire skeleton was exposed, and only then did the dead relent and stand up off him.

One more emerged from the crowd, its grinning skull bearing a black crown. In its hands were two of the black gems, and it stood still for a brief moment, as if allowing Fa to realise what awaited him. Some unseen force pulled him upright, and the Black King’s grin seemed to widen as it pressed the gems into his eyes. Fa screamed at long last, and his soul joined him in chorus.

Then his eyes opened once more to the sight of his books, his desk, his study. The gem. Without hesitation he returned it to its lockbox, paused for a moment, and then began sobbing uncontrollably. After some time sat there, Fa Xian began a prayer of forgiveness. Then he got up, grabbed the lockbox, and began walking to the Great Temple of the Mother and Father. He could not continue his work. He had failed.

Guan Liang had come to a conclusion, and his court had too. No more would the savage mutants to the west be tolerated. Their minor raids had become an intolerable nuisance, and other peoples had formed a coalition against them. As such, the Morning Kingdom would join forces with those fighting the Bloated Throats next year, and send an army to their west to invade led by the King’s elder brother, Guan Zheng. For now, some preparations were in order.

Saving some garrison troops, the entire forces of the Kingdom marshalled at Luoyang, the fortified city on the border with the throats. The newly built manufactory there was requisitioned for the year by the Morning King, and began churning out steel equipment at an unprecedented rate. The entirety of the army was to be outfitted with better arms and armour in order to help them in the coming fight. Furthermore, an additional 1,500 medium infantry were to be recruited and trained, also outfitted with steel equipment.

Meanwhile, the newly constructed outpost on the far side of the Black Brume had many thousands of settlers sent to occupy it and its hinterlands. The swiftly growing town was gifted the name Xian Zhanguo – First Grasp.

THE PRINCEDOMS OF VOLARUCIO

Dpksnx1.jpg

Volaruci Tercios drilling outside the Castill de Ronbarra.

“And so it was, upon the betrayal of the Children of God, that only one remained loyal – Elluto, Master of Death. As Edios, in his divine sacrifice, merged his power and mind with the Paths of the Spirits, the Veins of the World, his loyalest Child swore to uphold his duties, to gather the souls of the faithful, and to lead them to Salvation in the Realm of the Soul, the beating heart of magic itself...”

The low drone of monks’ prayers reverberated through these monastic halls, as the Cardinal of the Faith serenely floated through the corridors – well, serenely for a man with a girth as wide as he was tall. The gentle tap of his slippers gave a strange rhythm to the prayer songs, as they echoed through the walls of the temple. The Order of Sorcerors - a collection of knights-magicka they may be –  were nothing if not truly dutiful in their worship of God. To perform the tasks entrusted upon you by God was often considered to be the greatest form of worship to Edios, so the Order of Scholars studied and the Order of Theologians preached, but the Order of Sorcerors had no chance to practice their skills save in war, and so they prayed.

The gilded halls, thick with the iconography of the Volar Church, seemed to stretch for miles, and the Cardinal’s breath became strained. Finally, after passing yet another Cross of Edios, the highest dignitary of the Volar Faith arrived to his solar, where he hurriedly sat upon his couch and poured himself a goblet of wine. No sooner had he arranged himself upon this perch, and sorted his purple-white robes, than appeared an orderly, his secretary to be exact, a scion of the Orda Scholarium. “There is a letter for you, Holiness.”

The Cardinal, Virtuous III as he had been known since his ascension to the Cardinalate, gestured impatiently for the letter, awkwardly breaking the seal one handed while gulping wine with the other, the first sentences, however, made him hurriedly sit the wine on the table, and he began to read the rather extensive parchment quickly, eagerly devouring the words writ upon it. He glanced up at his still present secretary. “Quickly, go and fetch the Archbishop of Toulagoza.” the order was curt, but the orderly was long used to such treatment by old Virtuous, he was known to be cantankerous when excitable.

After a few minutes the Archbishop, Juan Ortega y Montanes, was bustled into the room, looking indignant in his somewhat hastily donned and ruffled robes. “Holiness, I was preoccup-“ Virtuous, who had long since taken to pacing around his study wheeled on the taller man in annoyance. “I don’t care that you were busy with your whores, Juan, here read this!” A bright flash of anger had come upon the Archbishop’s face, but that quickly subsided as the Cardinal thrust a sheaf of paper under his nose, which he read quickly. Ortega blinked in surprise. “What is this, Holiness?”

Virtuous gulped down some wine, glancing at the Archbishop. “It is how we will secure the supremacy of the Volar Faith. It has come to us by the Will of God, and we must make every use of it – It is the path to a Kingdom of God, ruled by August I of the House de Hontiveros, it is our path to a Kingdom of Revalia, of Dule and of Auldhau.” The Carbinal shuffled around his desk, and sat down clumsily. “Send a mission to Ischyros, Juan, it is the Will of God that all his subjects understand his Teachings. Thankfully, Agostin thirsts for regal power, it is now up to the Volar Church to attain it for him.”
