“I hope to one day travel from end to end of the empire without it taking days.” Augustus Horen

Origin

Mankind and Man’s progenitor are a smart and adaptive specimen. When there is a need, a change is made, the Vaeyl being the exemplar. In a land that is cold, and where the only means of transportation are hard to train bears, and heavy horses, mass transportation was needed to move to and from their land. From their dilemma, development was born; innovating to solve their problem. They designed massive things, iron beasts with a burner for its heart and pistons for its muscle, fixing their problem. It allowed for transport, of both men and cargo; yet time and neglect put an end to these marvels. Their corpses all over Serrimor.

The descendants are curious things, sometimes looking at what previous civilizations left behind, or being born with ingenuity; perhaps both. What the Vaeyl left behind surely proves useful.

Description

The Iron Charger -- sometimes referred to as a Rail -- is a hulking machine meant for transport, be it for resources or people. It is comprised of multiple parts on hardy metal wheels, though at its essence it can be a minimum of two sections, or ‘couches’, lest the means of transportation be completely inefficient. The most important part of the Charger is something known as an Engine; a device that produces energy, or fuel for the Rail to actually move.

To one’s understanding, the engine takes in fuel and must be either the head of the Charger, or tethered to an attached couche, which translates to some energy that in turn moves mechanisms for the wheels to turn. These engines are typically too large for a man to carry, often bolted to the ground, and nearly 3 meters in height, with large bulk. Verily, the engines take up most of a couche, and requires a good deal of fuel to run, which is why there are usually multiple couches, as having only one would fit a singular Charger Engineer (people maintaining the engine and controlling the Rail), and the engine, which will lead to the machine being unusable after a few feet of travel. Notably, the concept of engines can be taken out of the Charger, and applied elsewhere; while it cannot be made portable, the engine can be used for many technological developments, mostly in tandem with clockwork mechanisms.

Current Engines are:

  • Coal Burners: By using coal and a large metal furnace to create steam, which is exhausted from various pipes on the Rail, the steel wheels are able to move. These Engines  require a team of mechanics and people to methodically work the furnace, shoveling coal into the flames. Often, the team will wear protective masks to help fight getting black lung, or steam leakages from the pipes.

  • Gear Hulk Engines: These devices, crafted by inventors and alchemists are large crucibles with various tubings that protrude from the engine, with its interior comprised of cogs, springs, and pistons. The mechanical energy produced helps in stimulating conductive alchemical fluids that surge throughout the pipelines and activate various clockwork mechanisms and hydraulics that span the length of the Charger. Much like the Coal Burner, it requires a team of Engineers, often making sure the churning cogs are performing well, and being sure to maintain the vessels that stem from the engine. Often, these folk keep spare alchemical fluid in the couche to keep feeding the engine, and are skilled and jump starting mechanisms to further aggravate the compound. They also wear protective gear to help against potential harmful fumes from leakages, and burning hot fluid. The worst case, these Engines can leave harsh chemical burns, or even suffocate its engineers if poorly kept.

  • Arcane Engines: These hulking  engines are a set of enchantments fueled by large mana obelisks, which with the aid of arcaurum, transmit magical energies to the wheels, and cause them to move. Notably, these typically have multiple obelisks, and a team of mages feeding mana into the device, as well as alterationists to maintain the enchantments. These Charger Engines must be handled with absolute care, as they can be prone to violent explosive power, should one shatter its fuel. The following explosion can spread the voidal blight, and cause peculiar events.

  • Runic Engines: These large devices are similar in concept to the Coal Burner Engines and its pipework, but powered by runic magic, namely steam+push runes. These engines are maintained by a team of runesmiths, mechanics, and scribes that continuously rewrite the runes and make sure to supply said runes with fuels. These folk wear protective gear while handling the engine, which is due to the steam possibly leaking through the pipework.

Now, even if one was to have the Charger complete, they would find that the Rail will always go off course, or fail. This is because it requires a laid out path (or Railway) for it to follow; often bolted wood with steel linings so that their wheels can travel along. These can be set up either underground or on the surface; though they must be built on something stable, as a large machine is going to travel on it. Most notably, these Chargers have difficulty traveling up long inclines, which is often why Nations terraform or adjust for such, breaching mountains with explosive might for these hulking machines to travel.

Mechanics

[To be expanded or edited]

  • Each railway will have one or more stops, which will be discussed with the World Development team.

  • A build needs to be made for the railway and Charger, copy pastes can be allowed at each stop. These will be warps that require a minimum amount of people for it to move. In addition, there will be a delay as to allow some Roleplay on the machine.

  • Only nations or charters of people can make Chargers, surely one can have the know how as to how to make one, but the sheer resources and labor is far too much for one person, let alone a couple of people.

  • Rply, a team of people must work on building the Rails (this requiring the approval of Story Team and Dev Team), though the actual Engineers that pilot and maintain these can be NPCs, unless someone wants to work the Charger.

  • A group of people can damage the railway (Chargers themselves are built to last, so it will be very difficult to actually destroy the machine), which will make the Rails unusable until a team of Engineers go to fix the railway. This can be done by messaging a member of the Moderation Team and doing the roleplay with them. Engineers will be given the exact location of where it is broken, as to not spend hours trying to find where the damage is.

~+~

Redlines:

[To be expanded on]

  • Engines, while able to used on things that are not Chargers, will require separate Loreposts as to what they are being used on.

  • The engines are far too large to make small vehicles, let alone be ran by one person.

  • Cannot one man a Charger.

Is it an april fool’s joke? **** if I know. Dardonas challenged me, I sort of went into an au---tic fury and wrote it out

yes but do they fuel LotC’s carbon emissions like wraiths?

Now we can finally have an LOTC rip-off of the Pullman strike.

I get the joke, it’s cause Rune Smithing is shelved so Runic Engines won’t be a thing!

On the other note, **** yeah trains!
