The Venetian Plot

Louis is surprised that his nobles took the word of a Breton newspaper so seriously. “I be damned,” he said, “if Catholic gossip governs the affairs of France.”

presentation-des-membres.jpg?strip=all

However, the sheer pressure from the nobility renders the affair not at all worth the investment. Louis caves, unwilling to risk his system of control over the kingdom which is so dependent upon the nobility’s preservation of their perceived rights. He is much surprised that they summed the courage to present their complaints as an ultimatum before his royal personage. Ugly memories of the Fronde resurface in the coming weeks, whilst Louis puts a positive spin on this disturbing ultimatum as it being patriotic pride for the sake of protecting French prestige; a commendable effort no doubt.

The official position of Louis XIV is thus: that the troops and monies sent had been a response to Venetian overtures for military aid, in exchange for long-term payments of gold and their “diplomatic support”. The intentions of Venice in using their troops were unknown and had no part of the deal. The notion that these troops were meant for some Ottoman excursion is dismissed as absurd; why would Venice seek to find foreign aid to attack a country they had just orchestrated a treaty with?

Louis now considers the ownership of Catholic press by any French official or noble as being an indicator of disloyalty.

Les Grande Fonderies

Louvois and Louis had high expectations for their grand domestic flint musket foundries, spread around the country arming regional regiments in a neat, easily controlled system of logistics. However, they were also painfully aware of the costs and risks of such an operation. Thus, it is not without much surprise that immediate production output is minimal, and costs titanic. Louis perceives the establishment of domestic weapon production as being extremely critical to French military expansion. He thus charges Louvois to submit to him, proposals for modifying their system to be implemented more effectively – and more quickly.

Yet Louvois is already working on a solution. Instead of establishing multiple foundries and gun smitheries across France, Louvois chooses the three largest and most successful foundries as sites for expansion and consolidation. Working with the premier members of the Gunsmithing guilds, Louvois proposes a model of production based upon what he coins as being a linge d’assemblage. Instead of each gunsmith taking his time to produce a single musket by his own hand, each will specialize in producing a single part of a complete musket, before passing it to the next part of the “line”. This model of production should be much faster and requires less skill. The three foundries – Paris, Lyons and Reims – are expanded with designs that emphasize this mode of production. Segmented buildings house the means of producing these parts; the largest structure in the Parisian Grande Fonderie is comprised almost entirely of forges for smithing multiple gun barrels at a time. Echoing Colbert, Louvois offers tax breaks and fine quarters to gunsmiths both foreign and domestic who choose, on French coin, to resettle in these three cities and work at the foundries. Colbert used this method to swipe professional craftsmen from bordering countries to found French luxury industries with great success. Louvois intends on using this well-proven model to make sure these new, gigantic foundries are well staffed.

Recognizing both the general importance of logistics to any successful military, and also the need for improvement as demonstrated by the regional production method’s shortcomings, Louvois pairs the Les Grande Fonderies with an improved system of logistics: the Bureau de la Logistique Militaire. The re-named Bureau of Military Logistics shifts its distribution model to a centralized one that is not tied to the regional origins of regiments. Supplies as a whole, including the newly produced muskets, are meticulously recorded by professional bureaucrats and are marked for distribution to warehouse complexes in strategic border and mustering locations. The weight of distribution is dependent upon strategic concern for the proficiency of troops in these border areas. Most interesting is the expansion of each Quartermaster’s responsibilities. He now runs an entire office of bureaucrats whose job is to report on the local army’s supply and make sure supplies reach them with military efficiency. No supplies will be wasted, or missed.

Concerning Naval Reform

The intense summer sun rendered the lower decks of the cramped, ancient ships of the line virtually uninhabitable. The gun decks were slightly better, for the gun ports were wide open- the naval artillery of varying quality and size rolled out with their gun crews standing by. Sweat threatened to douse the slow-matches in their tubs- if not the sheer humidity, which was indicated by the constant creaks and groans from their overworked, rotting knees and trusses underneath the sailors’ feet. A cry from the quarterdeck- Vive le’roi!. The officers grabbed the slow-matches and, all together, lit their fuses.

Louis looked on with a mild, perhaps slightly forced smile from the shaded stern of his royal barge as the fourteen ships of the line stretched out in front of him let loose their saluting broadsides. The largest was a three-decker, like six others before the barge, which sported ninety-four cannons and some impressive stern livery. Further down, smaller three-deckers had perhaps eighty to seventy guns, and then two-deckers with fifty or so cannons. They looked quite brilliant, all gleaming in the sun with fresh paint, beautiful gold trim, the royal standard billowing from every topmast and pole aboard- but Louis could have sworn the fourth ship down seemed to almost sag in the middle. What was obvious though was the lack of coordination in the saluting broadside. A thundering majestic roar? No- perhaps more like fireworks, the individual packs of gunpowder exploding randomly and without much control. Differing degrees of booms, some deeper and others shorter, others crackling and others dull, popped in the royal ear. French pride however, depended on just how wide his smile was.

“Excellent, just excellent- my deepest compliments to Admiral Cecile for the performance of his fleet,” said Louis to the entourage of officers surrounding him with a grin from ear to ear. Then, suddenly, another rolling boom- a line ahead of the ships of the line, comprised of frigates, let out their own broadside. Louis of course, did not let his companions think for a moment that he hadn’t realized they were performing their own salute as well. His attention was occupied however, to the leading frigate – a very stately looking vessel of twenty guns – which put her helm hard over and was now luffing up through the wind. Turning towards the barge, approaching from the opposing side…

The frigate, with naval quality, completed her tack as the ships behind her let loose their courses and followed her through the wind. Now bow-on, the beautiful crow emblem upon her bow gazing onwards, she happily surged forward with the fleeting speed of a gazelle, shaving the wind close-hauled yet not daring to give an inch of leeway. A touch of the wheel here and there kept her sailing straight, angled away from Louis and his gilded barge as though she would pass on the opposite side- just until she defiantly gave way and let the wind spin her around with shocking agility- bracing quickly on a speedy beam reach and crossing the bow of the barge closely. Now she delivered her thundering salute – the guns all firing instantly to Louis’s satisfaction very close by. And the second ship had only just now, finished her tack.

Thoroughly beaming, Louis turned to his companions. “Who was that captain?” He said, examining the gilded stern of the frigate as she rejoined the line ahead of the lineships, her less impressive counterparts lagging behind in the complex maneuver.

“Captain Jacque Corneille, Your Majesty; son of Admiral Corneille in Toulon.”

“He must certainly be the most remarkable seaman I’ve seen,” said Louis, before taking a sip from his wine- almost ignoring the second frigate which still struggled to complete the saluting turn.

Louis XIV visits the fleet in Le Havre, the primary base in which the French fleet operates. Though the lavish fleet review is a prestigious event, Louis is much displeased with the quality of the fleet. The ships are almost all outdated, suffering severe issues. The sailing master of the seventy-four gun Fondant sheepishly reports he is under orders not to bring the ancient ship under anything more than topsails or courses; her knees cannot sustain an acceleration of more than five knots and are being reinforced for a third time in ten years. Though his mind is occupied with military reform, he cannot help but think of his decrepit fleet.

Louvois is much overwhelmed directing the Grande Fonderies but nevertheless finds himself nodding wearily at plans slid across his desk to approve construction of a competitive seventy-gun ship. The requirements are straightforward and should match her English and Spanish counterparts of the same armament: two decks with comfortable sea room, twenty-four pounders upon her gun deck with eighteens on her upper gun deck. However, where the design should differ from her counterparts is a conscious sacrificial offering of quarterdeck rail and the bulwarks in exchange for less windage: more speed and better sailing qualities at the expense of protection. It’s hoped the new seventy-gun ships will be good, reasonably priced means of replacing the weak, old middle-powered ships of the line.

These ships will form the backbone of a new navy. If these first designs go along well, Louvois looks forward to directing a more ambitious standardization program.

All the while, large model ships under canvas covers are ferried into Versailles- design proposals for a new super-flagship. The stern gallery of one such model which Louis proudly displays in his study says Soleil Royal. Designers disregard cost and begin work dreaming up a wild 110-gun design; a prestige project under Louis’s gaze. It’s thought this new flagship will awe and strike fear in enemies- whenever Louis feels he can afford it, of course.

Other Actions

The French government spends some more! A moderate amount of money is used to buy and stockpile grain and other foodstuffs during the Fall harvest, kept in government storehouses in case of famine (or war).

Hunting laws, whose punishments remain medieval and rather barbaric, are negotiated down to less extreme consequences. It’s perhaps the most absurd example of the French nobility’s flagrance; so obsessed with their hunting privileges that limbs are removed for simply having things that could be thought of as hunting equipment on their lands. Louis portrays the laws as inhuman, and forwards the new ones as equally just, but reasonable.

Fortifications on the border with Spain receive funds for improvement- primarily in the form of new artillery and earthworks for greater numbers of defending infantry.

Louis approves the Artillery Redistribution Plan, which formally establishes that he reserves the right to take old naval artillery from naval warehouses or laid-up ships for use as field artillery if deemed necessary in wartime. This is not extended to cannons designated as important for the naval war effort by the Navy leadership, or from ships in active service.

All Things Summarized:

-Louis responds to the overblown Venetian scandal: The intentions of Venice in using their troops were unknown and had no part of the deal.

Louvois and Louis stubbornly persist in the domestic musket production program.

-The Les Grande Fonderies are established; three of the largest and most successful installations are expanded upon, consolidating manpower and resources from the others.

-A new model of production, the ligne d'assemblage is introduced. Gunsmiths will not work on one musket at a time, but per the guild's order of senority distribute tasks in constructing individual parts of muskets at a time. Each member specializes in a stanardized part, which are assembled by the most senior gunsmiths. The architecture of the expanded foundries reflects this.

-The Bureau de la Logistique Militarie enforces a centralized model of distribution to rectify the issues of regional production. It is a titanic bureaucratic engine, complemented with increased staffs for army quartermasters to improve efficiency and speed.

-Much coveted Naval reform begins: a standard 70-gun ship of the line design is ordered.

-Louis dreams of building a prestigious super-flagship of 110 guns.

-The government stockpiles grain and foodstuffs after the harvest.

-Hunting laws are made more reasonable in their severity.

-Fortifications near the Spanish border receive funds for improvements, with focus on the quantity of troops they can hold.

-An emergency plan to take non-essential naval artillery from naval warehouses for field use is prepared.

The attempt to teach Islam, and give courage indeed backfire. Innocent Christians were killed, and the Emir blamed the Holy Warriors of Allah. There would be justice. The band from Usama Ibn Rashid starting the killings must be punished. In which Amar Al-Husan devised a plan.

A trench was made smaller, un-normal for the Suqur Allah, but to experienced eyes would wonder its purpose. The Men of Usama Ibn Rashid’s men was called, to be trained in the cause of Allah.

Men of the Suqur Allah were ordered to load their flintlocks, and have their weapons ready. If they heard the signal, they would begin to execute their order, But Amar was no harsh man, He wanted to attempt to save their souls. The morning came, but no gunfire, the city of Damascus woke with fear...Something might be happening after all the recent attacks, who knows what would be going on.

Usama Ibn Rashid and his men came, a few dozen, they were struck by awe at the discipline of the TRUE soldiers of Allah. Amar stood before them, arms crossed behind his back, but to their eyes, they could not see the two fingers that were lifted. With that, unites marched off, as one remained, around two hundred men. The two men gave each other their salams. Amar told Usama’s men to jump into the trench and they would begin with learning gunfire. They all done so and Usama remained above to speak to Amar.

“Is this all your men my brother in Islam?" Amar asked, at this point the men sent off blocked the camp off, ensuring no escape.

"This is all the men I have. But when I attacked the blasted kaffirs, it quickly escalated, and some others joined us. But the silly Emir believes it is all my gang." Rashid replied with a grin upon his face

"Alhumdillah, Though, If we are to liberate Syria, you need to bring them All here in a Month akhi, or we are weak and disunited. I do not have contacts with them, but you do, do me this akhi, for the sake of Allah." Amar stated trying to gain his trust though Alarmed if there was to be a swift victory. They needed to be found.

"I do not command the mobs, they just joined us. But remember, the Koran, Surah 2, 'How often has a small party vanquished a numerous host by Allah's permission, and Allah is with the patient.'" Rashid stated with his quote, but they did not understand the chapter of Bakrah and its meaning Woe to them Amar thought.

"I command only these men, but we are faithful, and wish to join you, in your fights abroad. We are impressed with your preachings and your fighting spirit." Rashid’s statement gave Amar hope, maybe these men could come back to Allah’s way

"Akhi, I want you to be aware...That attacking Christians...Is haram in our faith...they are under our protection Akhi...Allah only tells you to fight the aggressors and oppressors...They Emir is not an Oppressor, nor the Christians... The prophet Muhammad said these exact words 'He who unfairly treats a non-Muslim living in a Muslim State, or undermines his rights, or burdens him beyond his capacity, or takes something from him without his consent; I will be his opponent on the Day of Judgment. '  Do you want to be The Prophet's enemy on the day of judgment." gives a signal to have the men ready to defend themselves, in case a bold attack, and himself sets his hand to his shamshir's hilt.

Rashid Seems suddenly suspicious. "You lose the big picture. The Caliphate is being attacked from all sides by the Kaffirs. These people - these Christians - would side with the invaders!"

"Look" He seems to realize his situation. "We can fight with you, no more assaults on Christians. You could use me, I know how to lead young men."

Amar would Interrupt And shout at him "The prophet said 'Whoever kills a non-Muslim citizen under a Muslim government shall not smell the fragrance of Paradise!' ARE YOU BETTER THAN THE PROPHET!?"

"Surrender to Allah's Name!-”

"Half of them were not paying Jizya, I bet! The Emir is a fat cat, and he knows they do not give the proper respect to Islam!" Rashid would Cut Amar off

"Do you know the SURAH AL MUNAFIQUN?”

"Our duty in Islam is to provide peace to the world...These Christians....are under our protection....as Muslims, Allah says we are not allowed to kill them if they have surrendered to MUSLIM RULE!" Amar attempted to give him this plea, but with Rashid’s next action, convinced him that it was too late for these men...but they would be a warning to those who attempt to use Allah’s name falsy again...

"They have not surrendered! not in their hearts. As soon as the Christians come they will side with the invaders!" Rashid then pulled a sword from his sheath but Amar halted his men from shooting him.

By this point civilians of Damascus rushed to the camp to see what was going on, to see why there were no drills this day, to see Rashid weapon on and aimed to Amar. With this Amar raised his hand and said allowed the signal “Allah sent down Issa, and his blessed mother to teach us mercy.” with this, the Suqur Allah, took aim, and unloaded a volley into the trench, crouching, another volley fired, crouching, and then another, and then another final time.

oq9_VhB0lRw46riDlwNrpgt1hP83A_vUWDB4AKS9OhCSU_o1vzJwDBLDnDRdLGk4TWGuqWtYdwOFQB0WGEYN1VHUujFK0iaLzV4wOzxkUjpeFz03x_LXG6GWmqD38K0xuPUX0kCp

Now the crowd witness Amar, And Rashid, Amar, took his shamshir out, and paced it to Rashid. In which the man charged thrusting to Amar, the citizens gasped at the sight but Amar was fast, turning to his side, and swiftly hitting the man with the blunt end of his pommel. Rashid fell to the ground knocked out.

Amar stood silent as he looked to the people of Damascus as they walked forward “This day…” Amar stated aloud for all to hear

“At Maghrib time, tell everyone of Damascus to come to our camp. I will address the recent events to everyone. Let it be known, As Syrians, your duty is to provide this information to your brothers and sisters. Go now…” with that said the bodies from the trench, were devastated, the volleys at point blank did not give them a single chance… the fight was over in ten seconds. The men of Suqur Allah carried the bodies out to the graveyards and gave them a proper Muslim burial.

(those wondering, the RP was discussed, and played out in PMs with the moderator. Thank you.)

The Gathering of Damascus

The city was gathered. A podium, with sniper towers around the camp, were already made. Ready in case of an assault. Patrols around the camp to ensure the order was made, everything was nice and orderly. Throughout the day men made papers for the exact same speech. Before the entry of anyone, they are ALL SEARCHED, making sure things are safe, patrols and men are at the ready to arrest if there are any assaults. All the Christians who lost people will be collected from all over PEACEFULLY and be brought to the front of the area and once it is over, they will have escorts home. Once everyone is ready Amar would begin.

“there are people in the world of Islam...

who do act in a manner that is against Islam...

which you can label as terrorism...

no doubt in my mind...

I know it, you know it...

there is no point denying it...

BUT it is not fair! to judge Islam

for the actions of 'some' Muslims

otherwise All Christians are crusaders...But they are not!

And all Jews are liers...BUT THEY ARE NOT!

We know there are groups amongst every religion that are military

but let me tell you in terms of the teachings of Islam...

We believe that there is war...

because you have the right to defend yourself

otherwise if defending yourself was a crime

then I call on to all of the countries in the world to throw their weapons in the ocean!

but they won't... they have Army, Navy...why?

Because someone may attack them

and we have to be ready to defend our soil, our land, our honor, our whatever.

Okay and Islam is what?

ISLAM IS A NATION like any other nation, and we have equal rights

BUT YOU TELL ME A NATION, WHICH SAYS TO THE PEOPLE...

1. Do not kill any child, any woman, or any elder or sick person.

2. Do not practice mutilation.

3. Do not uproot or burn palms or cut down fruitful trees.

4. Do not slaughter a sheep or a cow or a camel, except for food.

5. If one fights his brother, he must avoid striking the face, for God created him in the image of Adam.

6. Do not kill the monks in monasteries, and do not kill those sitting in places of worship.

7. Do not destroy the villages and towns, do not spoil the cultivated fields and gardens, and do not slaughter the cattle.

8. Do not wish for an encounter with the enemy; pray to God to grant you security; but when you encounter them, exercise patience.

9. No one may punish with fire except the Lord of Fire, Allah.

10. Accustom yourselves to do good if people do good, and to not do wrong even if they commit evil.

NONE!

they destroy shops, they kill children, they kill women, right before our eyes!

SOME MUSLIMS misrepresenting Islam....through violent acts...

such as going to a market or to the streets, and killing innocent people IN THE NAME OF ALLAH

WE SAY... ISLAM IS THE FIRST TO SAY THIS IS PROHIBITED, NOT ALLOWED, FORBIDDEN!

First You can not Kill innocent civilians, If they DO go and join an enemy, let them and then face them on the battlefield...

What Islam permits... is that two armies meet...like how armies are meeting all the time..then you have the right to do what you have to do on the battlefield...

People buying vegetables to have lunch is not included!

So to kill them in the name of Allah is OPPRESSION!

and the prophet peace and blessings be upon him said

'the believer will remain within the margins of his religion... Unless he spills blood illegally..'

Once he kills one innocent soul! HE WILL BE HELD RESPONSIBLE BY ALLAH and it may be the reason he will enter the hellfire...

We are the SUQUR ALLAH...The Falcons of Allah...We studied in the way of Jihad...Before we allow any of our men to go fight jihad, they have to understand these rules… To those of you who are out there...Killing INNOCENT PEOPLE, You are fighting against Allah… ALLOW YOUR GOVERNMENT, YOUR EMIR, to HANDLE these things and stop doing acts which you have no authority in.

I Just talked to one who started these killings! DO YOU REALLY THINK, YOU ARE A MAN! Your A MUSLIM, for killing INNOCENT PEOPLE… We are People of ALLAH…. You claim you want to be a martyr and fight for the sake of Allah, THEN JOIN THE OTTOMAN ARMY… OR JOIN US… Don't be a coward..and kill innocent Christians in the streets…In their homes...on the roads...Allah did not teach us to be murdered like the Russians...

STOP QUOTING QURAN THAT YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND! ALLAH HATES THIS! IF YOU THINK YOU CAN KILL INNOCENTS THEN YOU'RE WRONG!

The Russians...have done the greatest war crime in history… They burned down an entire Provence of Muslims and Christians and Jews...they put them all to the sword…Their fellow Christians even! DO YOU KNOW WHY!? Because they do not follow our rules of jihad…

Allah promises hellfire to those who break these rules… YOU WANT TO BE A MAN! DEFEND YOUR PEOPLE, NOT BY KILLING A MAN JUST BECAUSE HE HAS A DIFFERENT FAITH! Go and join the army to defend your people…

There will be liars who claim WE THE SUQUR Allah are liars and hypocrites...Tell me one rule in ISLAM WE BROKE?

The prophet says

‘“Whoever kills a person who has a truce with the Muslims will never smell the fragrance of Paradise.” This is in Saheeh Muslim.

“Beware!  Whoever is cruel and hard on a non-Muslim minority, or curtails their rights, or burdens them with more than they can bear, or takes anything from them against their free will; I Prophet Muhammad will complain against the person on the Day of Judgment.” this is in Abu Dawud

THE QURAN SAYS

Say: O unbelievers!

I do not serve that which you serve,

Nor do you serve Him Whom I serve:

Nor am I going to serve that which you serve,

Nor are you going to serve Him Whom I serve:

You shall have your religion and I shall have my religion.

Qur'an 109:1-6

“Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

Allah only forbids you from those who fight you because of religion and expel you from your homes and aid in your expulsion - forbids that you make allies of them. And whoever makes allies of them, then it is those who are the wrongdoers.”

Quran 60:8-9

Even Allah says, Only fight them IF THEY aid...And they must have joined the enemy in their ranks with their swords facing you on the field of battle…

“O you who have believed, do not prohibit the good things which Allah has made lawful to you and do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like transgressors.”

Quran 5:87

IF you want to fight, then Join the ottomans AS THE QURAN SAYS

“And why should ye not fight in the cause of Allah and of those who, being weak, are ill-treated and oppressed?- Men, women, and children, whose cry is: “Our Lord! Rescue us from this town, whose people are oppressors; and raise for us from thee one who will protect; and raise for us from thee one who will help!”

Quran 4:75

“You may fight in the cause of GOD against those who attack you, but do not aggress. GOD does not love the aggressors.”

Quran 2:190

Now...Do you dare question the word of Allah...Halt your fighting...and pray to Allah for forgiveness… ALLAH DOES NOT FORBID US from fighting you who break his laws...

Now we give to the families who lost people to these acts against Allah, gifts, and give them our dua’s…”

Amar would then have each of the members of the families come forward and Dinars would be given, BUT to ensure no one gets greedy guards to form a line to ensure there is safety for them. And later provide escorts home.

“It's your duty to spread what you have heard here to your neighbors and those who did not attend… Remember, You can not kill Christians or others of faith unless they are in your enemy's army…”

All of this would have been written down, and sent to every house, and pinned around Damascus and Syria.

Outside the Emir’s office

The Men of Suqur Allah arrived at the palace of the Emir, Delivering a letter, and the criminal Usama Ibn Rashid, to allow the Sharia Law court to happen, And send a man in with a letter to the Emir

“As-salamu Alaykum, Emir of Syria, We give you the one who started this. We found out it is not only his group which caused issues within Damascus, But other gangs, inshallah we have ended the attacks with this sign and our speech. The Sultan made it clear it is your duty to ensure safety, and that you have done. We suggest more patrols for a while and we hope these actions provide a sign that we are not your enemy… We hope that you will allow the doctors to join us. As Allah states it is haram to forbid medical and aid to fellow muslims. We will be leaving Syria for the war, and leave our homeland in your trusted care. The Russians are bold people from what we have seen in our jihads… Make sure syria is protected… Thank you for your service to Allah, and Islam, and to the caliphate, MAY ALLAH’S mercy and blessings be upon you.”

With this, USAMA SHOULD BE PUBLICLY EXECUTED in accordance with the Sharia law by the govt.

Anwar With guards stepped to the podium, the market buzzed

“As-salamu alaykum, those who provide in the name of their lord, Oh my people, many of you have asked to help the Suqur Allah in their jihads, but can not travel nor fight. Remember Jihad means struggle, so those who wish, we are setting up a permanent business here in Damascus, We will provide work, and pay. We will be building the best of rugs, to sell to support ourselves, as well as pay you. We are hiring around 500 people. May Allah bless your hard work and hands, Ameen.

Let it be known, that we are still looking for doctors and NOW are looking good builders to join and follow us in our travels, Come and seek the rewards of Allah…

And one final announcement, We will be shipping out to Jihad, but inshallah we will return soon. May Allah bless Syria, and you the people of Damascus, please make dua for our brave lions. ”

The March

The men, were lined up, the supply carts well defended, doctors and builders sat in their carts ready, artillery lined up and lumbered. The Army of the Ottomans sat outside the city of Damascus. The Suqur Allah, Began marching in their new ‘Falcon’s march’ through the city, recited the Nasheed they made for it, louder than before, the roar of the unified march were like drums to the Unified voice. Such a Sight brought awe to everyone. At the head, Amar and Anwar rode upon their horses. The city cried out with Salam’s and Praise, these men they have known for so long, were about to march into the unknown for the sake of Allah...All the while singing for the glory of their lord!

“A fire blaze up at our hearts,

We have lost to happiness,

The almighty God bless you,

My Islam!

As a cheerless child,

So don’t look at me,

For shining your star,

I sacrifice myself for you, my Islam!

There is no God except Allah,

The almighty God bless you,

There is no God except Allah,

My Islam!

Breaking you will not make you kneel down,

THE KINGDOM OF SWEDEN

THE ROYAL SWEDISH ARMY

Image result for swedish line infantry uniform

The Swedish Army has once again surpassed all expectations, but King Karl XI asks for more! Swedish gunnery is considered to now be the paramount task – the Swedish always fought with superior firepower, and there is no reason to change that now. Swedish line infantry regiments are drilled constantly in firing exercises, with the aim being withering volleys at five shots a minute. Guard status and a bonus of 10 Gold Kronas for each man is the prize for being the first regiment to achieve this rate of fire.

In the Great Religious War, Swedish artillery could fire anywhere from 3 to 5 times faster than enemy artillery – the artillery is thus drilled to achieve a consistent rate of fire 5 times faster than any foe they may be facing.

Additionally, the Hakkapellita was the first attempt to reintroduce shock cavalry to Western Europe – the Swedish Cavalry have become less notable than their fellows of the past, but they are still a force to be reckoned with. As during the Great Religious War, the cavalry are instructed to close into point blank range before discharging their pistols, to allow maximum penetration. In addition, a further 1000 light dragoons are raised. The light dragoon regiments are then split up, and a company of 200 light dragoons are attached to every 1000 Hakkepellita. The idea behind this is quite simple – the light dragoons will dismount and provide constant musket fire to support Swedish cavalry when they make attacks on infantry formations, essentially adding more firepower to the Cavalry to allow it to cut down enemy infantry.

Finally, the Swedish Dragoons, essentially mounted line infantry, are expanded by a further 2000 men to a total of 6000. Furthermore, the dragoons receive 6 light guns per regiment (1 regiment = 1000), making them swift moving, heavy hitting mobile infantry.

THE SWEDISH NAVY

In an attempt to further develop the navy, 4 more of the new frigates are constructed. In addition a major refit plan goes under way, with Swedish ships being stripped of guns, and refitted to be made more viable as open sea ships – this will also see many Swedish ships moved down in the ratings as the guns are removed, but the hope is that it will become viable for Sweden to have a true ocean going fleet.

Additionally, a new first rate is designed – primarily to be an ocean going ship, with a maximum of 100 guns. The hope is to build a large ship that is weatherly and well armed that will form the core of the Swedish line of battle. Designs for second and third rates are also made, with similar specifications.

FOREIGN POLICY

Swedish Officers are sent to partake in the French Drilling Tournament.

2000 additional Company troops, along with 4 light guns, are sent to the command of Colonel-Governor Stig Wennerstorm in Karlstad. In addition, a company of 200 militia cavalry is trained by the Colonel – the objective is simple, once men and ordinance have arrived, the Colonel will lead a series of campaigns to subjugate the local tribes and force them to obey Swedish rule – his secondary objective is also to build a series of outposts and minor forts to secure Swedish dominance over as large a chunk of South Africa as possible.

The Most Serene

Republic of

Venice

1685

Background

The year of 1685 is another bountiful year for the Venetian Republic. Successful news reaches the lagoon regarding the surrender of Modena and the continued march of the Republic’s army in terra firma. Two months later boatloads of riches enter the city and celebrations erupt. In this time of splendour a new reform commission headed by senator Rocco de Benetto stirs the city with questions over naval and administrative decline. Meanwhile, economically the City of Venice begins to suffer from an acute labour shortage due to war and shipping requirements; Labour costs increase accordingly.

Military

Francesco Morosini, in grand spectacle, accepts the surrender of the Duke of Modena outside the city walls. In the coming days many of the city’s greatest works are spirited away back to Venice to be installed in various churches and government buildings. With the achievements of the campaign so far Morosini winters in Modena. The populace spends the winter with the Venetians and their condotierre whom they loathe. The winter is one of animosity as petty thievery and fights break out between the populace and the Venetian soldiers.

Finally, as spring arrives and the Venetian new year begins the citizens of Modena riot in the streets demanding some Hanoverian soldiers be brought to justice over the murder of a tavern keep. This eventually turns into general disapproval over the high taxes which were raised to provision the Venetian force. Francesco II d’Este, the Duke of Modena, appeals to Morosini for help and Morosini orders his soldiers to clear the streets. At the end of a march day hundreds of Modenese citizens lie dead but no sacking takes place. The next day the Venetian army of 22,000 break from their quarters and move south towards the borders of Lucca and Tuscany in fright of the populace.

Lundardo di Mazi sets up a second supply point with 2,000 soldiers in central Modena. From here he gathers provisions from the countryside and cities to supply the army, including the seizure of Modenese gunpowder where possible.

Once again demands are sent out; Both to the city-state of Lucca and the Duchy of Tuscany. 200,000 and 5,000,000 gold sequins to be paid in fifteen years respectively, and promises not to take up arms against Venice. Demands are also made specifically to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany: Exclusion of taxes and free movement of Venetian merchants, Venetian monopoly on grain import and export, and a ban on foreign merchants from outside of Italy.

Meanwhile in Crete discontent bubbles to the surface. Muslims and Greeks complain against the return of extensive Venetian taxation and bureaucracy. Several local clans are also outraged by newfound segregationist and restrictive policies instituted by Venice putting all political power in the hands of returning Venetian colonists. Senator Geronimo Renier requests new Venetian soldiers to bolster the ranks. The doge acquiesces and 1,000 soldiers are sent in a fleet of 5 sailing ships and 10 galleys to Candia to reinforce those already on the island.

Administration

Statistics

R2aGNoh.png

The Venetian Republic, with the bringing in of Crete and Negroponte stands at just under two million citizens. Only around five percent of the country lives inside of Venice as of now, however.

Meanwhile the Republic of Venice brings in over 2,400,000 in revenue and army expenses are dropping drastically due to payment and provision from Modena. At the same time the Ottomans provide payment for shipment across the Black Sea.

Government Affairs

In the summer of last year the Ottomans came to Venice with an intent to procure a hundred ships for the purpose of the transportation of their forces into Crimea. With some hassle the Republic was able to draw up one hundred ships modified for the transport of cannons, horses, and large quantities of men. These ships are mostly government owned but a fourth are drawn from merchant ships. This leads to a stark decrease in merchant shipping as 12,000 sailors are sent to Crimea for eight months. Venice profits handsomely over this, making 300,000 gold sequins and a large profit after payments are made to captains and crew.

Senator Rocco de Benetto, previously a merchant, heads yet another reform commission in the Senate. Demanding that new money pouring in is spent on new improvements in Venice and that old restrictions are repealed. The reformers propose the following:

 – The construction of a proper training ground and large barracks in the city of Venice.

 – The repeal of many old restrictive commercial laws.

 – The extensive refurbishment of the arsenal and private shipyards.

 – The gift of more rights and privileges to the Senate.

 – The expansion and redoubling of maintenance in the colonies. Particularly in Corfu and the Aegean.

The Council of Ten opposes many of these changes and runs it’s own parallel discussions on improvements that could be made to Venice with the incoming gold from Italy and the Ottomans. Discussions are made over the improvement of estate infrastructure and defences in terra firma. Additionally the Council of Ten looks to support a larger Arsenal. These two groups are looking to come to loggerheads in the coming year.

Francesco_Guardi_034.jpg

Senators and the Doge meet to discuss reforms. Members of the Council of Ten watch.

Citizenry

Art and celebration in Venice are on an uptick. Paintings from Morosini and his army are in high demand amongst the patrician class and are sold at a pretty penny. Celebratory beads and jewelry are sold on the Rialto by resolute merchants to bureaucrats going home for the day. Senator Rocco de Benetto remarks to his friend Antonio Foscari in a letter that, “Moral in our city remains steadfast. The city has had to release grain from it’s stores to accommodate celebration by the common people”.

Paintings and sculptures from Modena are also a welcome sight into the city. Many of the most prized pieces are hung in the entrance of the Ducal Palace while others are placed in Church’s and state buildings. One Greek-styled sculpture is notably placed atop the entrance to the Arsenal inviting workers into the shipyard. More sculptures and artworks are also sent overseas to Crete to adorn the future Governor’s room. Others are sold to Patricians in auctions raising more than ten thousand gold sequins for the state. Unanimously approved by the Senate, and at not insignificant cost to the state, St. Mark’s Square is slowly repaved with flagstones.

Diplomatic

Diplomatically Venice does little in 1685. Discussions with France, Portugal, and the Ottomans take place. The only event of important yielded was the receivement of payments and return of Venetian ships through the Bosphorus with the Ottoman Empire.

!Must Mod!

  • Labour shortage fuels migration.
  • Long-Term reaction of the Modenese towards the Venetian occupation.
  • Unrest in Crete.
  • Florentine and Luccan response.
  • The conflict between the reform faction and both other senators and the Council of Ten. (You don’t have to do the entire thing, just maybe setup some elements or part of the conflict).
  • Comment on the general prosperity of Venice between now and two years ago and maybe the affect this has on the population and Venetian exceptionalism.

Kingdom of Portugal

In order to settle the recent divides in the Marinha, King Pedro II Pacifico has ordered Admiral Luís Inocêncio de Castro to determine the optimal way for a navy to be run. The heads of the Marinha are to investigate the navies of Europe with especial focus on the earlier Portuguese navy as well as the British, French, Spanish, and Venetian navies. Comparisons between the Lisbonites and Oportonites are to be made with the existing navies, aiming to reduce inconsistencies and impractical measure in creating a Portuguese naval doctrine. Additionally, a report on naval doctrine is to be written as a manual for the admiralty of Portugal. [Mod+Responses]

Colonists are rallied to join an expedition to the Cape Verde Peninsula and the minor islands along the coast along-side a contingent of 1 000 garrison men. The first order of action is to prepare adequate fortifications for settlement and construct a harbour for basing of the ships. Half-way through the year, a second group of colonists are to join the colony along with extra supplies of materiel, textiles, dried foods, and seeds. [Mod]

Since the prior year’s kick-starts to the manufactories have proven successful, further generous investments are provided to crockers, magnaneries, and textile manufactories. Off-season subsidies are offered in exchange for partial ownership from 20-50% of the manufactories by the crown. [Mod]

Qing Empire

Emperor Kangxi sat in his throne, overlooking the royal hall. Hundreds had come to the palace today to witness the new turn of events. The Emperor’s adversary have been temporarily halted. Though the situation was not sustainable, some time had been bought. Days ago news had reached the court of a grand victory. The Green Standard Army had secured a fast and efficient victory in Sumatra. The revenues and spices from their tribute would bring back an entirely new market for the Empire. With such a grand victory, the end of Taiwan, and Kangxi’s temporary measures, the time has been deemed ripe to keep Qing centralization rolling.

-The first edict announced is the scaling down of the Qing army. Several European attaches sent to serve the Emperor had all agreed. The hundreds of thousands of Chinese troops barely had spears and shields, let alone equipment or training. To balance this is the formation of a entirely new Army. One where the most elite of the Empire will serve. The Imperial Banner Army will be a multi ethnic army, to serve directly under the Emperor. A great honor, all soilders and officers are allowed to apply from any army. The Emperor himself, European advisors, and his top generals will run the screening process. This year focuses on finding 10,000 veterans for the Imperial Banner Army. They are chosen by way of experience/skill, and loyalty to the Emperor and Qing government. Meanwhile 50,000 troops are charted to be released from the army, given rebel land to farm in the south and a yearly stipend. This will hopefully also help a ‘yeomen’ class of loyal Qing in the south grow.

Qianlong11-600x381.jpg

-With the Imperial test in full swing, the Emperor has been gathering skilled and intelligent bureaucrats. They have formed the basis of the Emperor’s new centralized government in Beijing. With the south already ravaged from the civil war they were relatively weak. The Warlords had been quelled for now at least. And so now the Qing begin to extend their influence. This year the Officials will travel through the provinces to tally taxes and enforce the law. Local magistrates will be built or expanded upon to handle each local town or city. Governors of provinces will be kept separate from generals, and must answer to Qing law. The magistrates will be backed up with the power of the Empire. Han and Manchu generals loyal to the Emperor will respond to any armed revolts, while diplomats respond to any vocal complaints. The loyalist Generals had just spent three decades fighting rebels and Warlords, and the resentment ran bone deep. This would ensure the reform policy had power behind it.

-With relative peace the Qing begin their next project. In the bustling ship yards of Taiwan, they will be an expansion program. Assisted by English advisors, the goal is to modernize the shipyards. Though nowhere near ready to build ships of the line, minor improvements are sought after. Reforms such as giving the workers proper training and lodging, and small adjustments to the junks. Things such as the capability to make triangular sails, and better types of wood combination. The overall goal to modernize the process.

-With control of Sumatra in the form of a tributary state, the revenue begins to flow in. The island has granted access to the rich and vibrant trade of Indonesia. Qing Merchants begin to accumulate these goods, and sell them to the growing market of European merchants. The prices of these in Europe are checked, and adjusted for when selling these goods. Most Europeans will only be able to afford small quantities, but each sale will bring the Qing more silver on top of what was gained from the tribute. / In military terms the Qing respectfully refrain from occupying troops. However work begins on coastal forts at the northern tip of Sumatra, and down her western islands. The troops massed there will trade their spears for shovels. Tens of thousands set to work with Ottoman advisors helping, to build as ‘modern’ of fortifications as they can to cover the coast and Sumatran straights.

Actions

-Demobilizing army/Forming Imperial Banner Army

-Continued Centralization

-Expanding Ship Yards in Taiwan

-Sumatran Market Opens/Sumatran Forts

[!] A force of some 25,000 Cavalry under a small General cadre are tasked west. They will travel the route of the Silk Road portion under Qing influence. They seek to instill stability, and root out bandit nest to ensure the trade flows smoothly.

[!] After a year of travel, Qing military observers reach the Russian army to witness the war.

The Kingdom of Great Britain

The East India Company

As the East India Company reached the Far Eastern countries such as China and Japan, they began to negotiate deals with the respective Emperors. In China, a gift is granted to the Kangxi Emperor of furs, tobacco, indigo, sugar, and other British luxuries, as well as some silver. They would later enter discussions for further trade involvement in the East which culminated in the creation of trade being allowed to Britain within Canton. In Japan, a similar gift would be granted to their government, as well as the beginning of a new trade tactic recently started by the Company. They would attempt to negotiate a formal exemption to the Christian Ban. Each gift would contain a letter from Richard Tudor and his brother George as a greeting of the foreign Emperors.

The development of the Forçado colony continues, and an attempt to bring in an additional 500 settlers is made. A regiment of soldiers is sent along with them to protect the colony. The colony would begin to focus on trading with the locals, hoping to discover connections to valuable trades such as gold, slaves, ivory, and pepper. A policy of cooperation with certain locals would be highly prioritized.

With recent successes in Asia during the British East India Company’s foreign trade expedition, the push to formally create a colony in India to aid in the advancement of Asian trade. After heavy considerations, officials within the EIC opt to begin a colony at Bengal and with funding from the Crown, a colony begins planning with the hope that settlers can land there by the end of 1685. A focus is put into the region of Bengal and the river flowing out of the Bay of Bengal.

A second attempt would begin to survey the St. Henry River, with the surveyors being sent with one thousand colonial soldiers.

Alexandra Tudor would continue her efforts in Scotland to bring the country into the British fold by extending her charity efforts to Glasgow as well. A large number of Catholic officials would be brought to the north with her and priests from throughout Europe were invited to partake. She would continue to personally oversee the extension of the charities funded by the Catholic Church of Britain in both Edinburgh and Glasgow as a means to show the people of Scotland that the Tudors saw them just as they saw any other in Britain, not as lessers. Despite the highly Catholic nature of the charity, it would be largely void of any specific Christian reference in an attempt to show British unity over religion.

King Richard and the Prince of Wales would fund the opening of two new shipyards in Glasgow as an effort to bring more jobs and help grow the northern cities, which is announced by Princess Alexandra during her trip to the city.

Henry Tudor, the Earl of Calais would begin to oversee the opening of his own shipyard in the city. For the time it would operate as a part of the royal navy but in time it was intended to act as a testing ground for new British ideas. The shipyard is planned with a significant amount of security. Henry also continues his tutelage under Admiral John Hammond.

Actions

  • King Richard and the rest of the Tudor family commission two great gifts. Two trade ships would be filled with bounties of sugar, indigo, tobacco, furs, and silver to be sent to China and Japan, each with their own purpose. The one bound for the Emperor of China would contain a British diplomatic mission and a personally written letter from King Richard and Prince George. Trade port is granted in Canton.
  • The second ship would be bound for Japan and would be a gift to the Emperor of Japan, with the hope that a show of some of the unique goods from the new world would prompt them to keep the doors to Britain open. Other goods would be sent as well, though the East India Company would not disclose all aspects of the trade [Sent as PM]
  • The East India Company also continues its development of the Forçado colony, hoping to expand trading with the natives, especially in regards to slaves and gold or silver.
  • The East India Company would begin funding a colony in Bengal, with the support of the crown. Gains from the Asian Trade Expedition are used for this colony. Two thousand men are called for as well as a regiment of soldiers to protect the EIC during its endeavors.
  • In Scotland, Princess Alexandra continues with the charity missions and even begins to expand them to Glasgow during the first half of the year before relocating to the city to oversee the effort to relieve those affected by the war.
  • Before the end of the year, Alexandra speaks publicly in Glasgow where she announces the King’s plan to open two new drydocks in the city, which will be offering jobs to those in the local regions, regardless of their past allegiances.
  • Similarly, in Calais, another new drydock would be built, with this one being overseen by Prince Henry.
  • By the end of the year, a second surveying expedition begins down the St. Henry River, this time accompanied by 700 colonial soldiers.
  • Henry Tudor’s schooling under Admiral John Hammond continues.

THE SUN NEVER SETS

-Upon reviewing older maps and charts, a group of colonists depart from spain and make their way to settle the island of Madagascar and establish a trade outpost there, after presenting the local rulers with many silver trinkets, spices, silks, metals, and other goods and prizes to earn the local rulers favor.

-In Angola, the Spaniards began to attempt to win the favor of many kings in the interior, by sending expeditions and diplomatic parties along rivers in the interior loaded with luxury goods and trinkets to trade for the African Kangs. They attempt to expand their influence into the interior.

-With the recent Chinese invasion of sumatra, Spanish merchant ships, previously unhindered to travel from India to the Philippines, are now subject to a tax imposed on by Han officials in domination over the crucial trade chokepoints of the Sumatran Isles. A Spanish captain set out from Manila, with a fleet of ships to search for a new trade route that Spanish merchants may take to avoid the Chinese tax, and cross to india with maximum profits.

EL EJÉRCITO

-As a part of a wider scheme of modernising the army, the incoming cadre of young officers begin to do away with the outdated pike, in favor of gunpowder weapons. As young, innovative officers are promoted and placed into leadership positions they outdo with pikes in their men, on their own account and on the account of the captain generalcy. It is a slow, gradual outphasement, and in 5 years it is hoped that the pike can be replaced with the flintlock.

-Tilly, along with Verboom, both begin to research and invest in creative innovations to speed up siege warfare, and make it much less costly. Tilly utilises Verboom to refine siege warfare to an art and develop it to a pinnacle of perfection and efficiency.

-The same is continued to be done. Verboom begins to draw many plans and blueprints for forts, striving to improve on the now-centuries old bastion fort with improvements that could render it extremely hard to siege. What Verboom seeks to do is revolutionise and change the formula for making bastion forts.

LA ARMADA

-In the docks of the empire, particularly in the new world, shipyards that are laid down are tweaked and improved, overseen by experienced navy officers and commanders in order to churn out ships that are hardier, sturdier, stronger at sea. Engineers and master shipyards test out new programs and methods in the shipyards at Havana first, and if they prove better then the ones traditionally used, they will be instituted throughout the empire.

Sorry for the lower-effort MP than usual:

EVENTS:

‘AT LAST’

‘Three messages, Your Majesty,’ a messenger informed the inept Charles II. After last year’s victories in the Netherlands, he was hopeful. What was said next confirmed that feeling.

’Your wife’s pregnancy has been entirely safe.’

‘Rejoice!’ Spluttered Charles in answer.

’The child is healthy and strong.’

‘Rejoice!’

’She is also a girl.’

‘Rejo-wait, no! No cause for rejoicing!’

After news that Theodora would have a baby sister, it appears that Charles II is doomed to die without a definite heir. Plans must be made to secure Spain’s future in the now almost inevitable eventuality of Charles dying without a son. In the court, factions schemed and plotted already about what to do in the inevitably disputed succession that would come, one day.

OTHER EVENTS

-In BRITTANY, in a dispute over taxation, a French merchant murders a bailiff attempting to collect from him. As a result, the city of Brest is flung into riots. French merchants are driven out in violent fashion. There is outrage in Paris.

-King Pedro II, on the other hand, rejoices fully to find he has a healthy baby boy.

-A SHOCKING assassination attempt on Princess Alexandra fails in Glasgow. A Presbyterian radical, armed with a bandoleer of flintlock pistols, was somehow able to openly wear the weapons and get in range of the Princess whilst in a crowd, about to announce plans for new shipyards. He fired the first bullet, wounding her, but was bayoneted and killed by a redcoat before he could get off anymore. The Princess made a full recovery, and was found to be in exceptionally high spirits during the whole affair, more determined than ever to continue her work.

-See VENETIAN post for ITALIAN COALITION forming.

-In the Ottoman Empire, discontent grows over the Venetian trade. Ottoman merchants are being utterly out-competed by their Venetian counterparts, whilst several key towns are expected to become destitute over the next decade on the Asia Minor seaboard.

-RUSSO-TURKISH WAR: tbd

-WARS IN GENERAL: tbd

MOD RESPONSES

Suqur Allah

-Usama is made a clear example of, and the Emir praises the Suqur Allah for their discipline and virtue. He apologises for accusing them wrongly, and, in a show of goodwill, releases twenty more doctors to the band’s service.

-It seems the men have already reached a great level of discipline and skill, and so the training has little effect.

-Disaster! 2 cannon are destroyed, 5 men killed, 6 wounded beyond healing, and 5 tended to by the new doctors back to fighting condition, due to a firing mistake. The premature explosion makes the cannon crews more nervous and they seem to be much less well-coordinated.

-The soldiers buy the wool in Damascus, and sell it for a premium on their way to North Africa at Sinai. They make a large profit; enough to buy many muskets.

-As the Suqur are forced to ship out to Africa, the advantages of their new connections are lost.

-One Imam, known as The Firebrand, a very popular man, begins to take issue with being shipped out to Africa. ‘We should be fighting the Russians! The Sultan has sent us out to do menial work. Why are we making rugs? We should be in battle!’ He gets a lot of sympathy from the men, with only their good discipline preventing them from openly grumbling about it. Even that may falter.

-The Suqur Allah find themselves with an abundance of supplies for their next campaign.

-The men begin to build more advanced things, including tunnels.

-Even with the new money made from the rug-trade, the Suqur just cannot compete with the nobility, who can offer higher pay for doctors. This turn, only the 20 given to them by the Emir join up.

-With the new money, the cannon are bought.

-The new business is set up and is expected to generate a profit within two years.

-The Suqur Allah become popular with Christians as a result of their actions.

-See first sentence.

-No siege engineers are available. They all see to be working for the government, and already bought out.

-750 men of the expected 1,500 turn up. Aware that they are sent to Africa, few seem to want to join, instead volunteering for the army where they can fight in the real war.

-They cannot seem to increase the range; it seems they have reached the maximum.

-Noted.

-The new messenger system is a success, ensuring a fast alert for the Ottoman forces.

-The new recruits are quickly and successfully trained.

-The North AFrican army have plenty of enough food and water.

-The sale is successfully made.

-Ammunition is saved.

Brittany

-The Breton army continues to grow in efficiency and training.

-Sapper training goes smoothly.

-New engineers fail to make the constructions any more speedy.

-Ideas for a Breton uniform do not go down well. The army, many of whom are former militiamen, like to wear their own clothes. The idea of uniforms causes dissent in the army, and in the heat of this, the new flagpoles largely go unnoticed.

-The new Red Cross has little effect. There seem to be few trained doctors in the country, because it seems most French Catholic doctors went to Calais, because the English offered them greater wages.

-Several key scientists and thinkers are attracted to Brittany, impressed by Duke Leo’s interest in the arts and sciences.

Brandenburg

-Prussia begins to stock up successfully on small arms and ammunition. She has now muskets and ammunition stocked for a further 5,000 men.

-The Prussians strike gold as a new manufacturing firm opens up in Berlin, manufacturing 15 further cannon for B-P at little cost.

Sweden

-New incentives quickly inspire the infantry to work hard on their reload speed. As a result, 4 new ‘Guard’ regiments are made: 4,000 men in total. They quickly become elite, composed of the best troops in the Swedish infantry, and known as the best in Europe.

-The Swedish artillery’s famous fire rate is maintained, but hardly increased.

-This new re-structuring of the cavalry is well-received in military circles, and proceeds smoothly. The new dragoons are raised without incident, and quickly get a sense that they are the ‘cutting edge’ of the Swedish army. ‘First in the field and the last out of it’ becomes their unofficial motto.

-The 4 new frigates are successfully finished by the end of the year, with refits proving extremely successful. Karl gains the nickname ‘The Refitter’ in the navy, because he takes a personal interest in the matter, and quickly finds ingenious ways to increase armaments at a low cost. The refits will be complete by 1688.

-The new heavier ships prove to be moderate successes, somewhat better than any current designs. However, they still form a third place behind British and Spanish designs. Admirals doubt whether these ships can out-manoeuvre and outfight their rivals.

-Through a terrible campaign, and, due to the excessive force available, the tribes flee or are brought to heel, one-by-one. During a famous last stand, a company of 100 Company infantry, known as Karl Company, is caught in the middle of the tribal army, numbering thousands. Their stand against the odds excites European interest once the tales reach European shores, and the heroic loss inspires the other Company troops to press on, decimating the locals in the Battle of Karlstad.

Venice

-Whilst it seemed most of the Italian states were keen to oversee the Venetian aggression, thinking it an isolated incident, the demands on Tuscany and Lucca prompt an instant and unified response. Savoy, Genoa, Tuscany, Lucca, and Mantua join the anti-Venetian coalition, whilst the Papacy offer moral support, ordering Venice to stop her ‘warmongering’ and promising ‘severe consequences’ should she refuse to back down from the demands. Even the Spanish King, Charles II is warned to watch the situation closely, and to treat Venice with caution. Emboldened by this widespread support, Tuscany rejects the demands. The Council of Ten, alarmed by the coalition amassing against them, order the return of the Venetian army and the ending by Giustinian of any more foreign expeditions. The people are jingoistic, buoyed by their victory at Modena, and eager to press forward, with the Doge greeted by throngs of jubilant onlookers in every street.

-The locals of Modena do not, it is found, take kindly to their Venetian occupiers. The local nobles, stripped of much of their wealth and patronage by the invaders, are completely outraged, and are supported in that by the common man. In one instance, a Venetian ‘foraging’ party attacks a Modenese village with sickening brutality, committing all man of atrocities. (This partly, as well as due to the threat of Venetian power, prompted the Pope to act) This survives deep in the memory of the Modenese peasant and burgher alike, and it is speculated by some more intelligent men that the situation will not last, with rebellion/insurgency expected. By these methods, the Venetian army successfully keeps herself supplied – and more than well-paid for her efforts.

-New troops and ships sent to Crete seem to calm the island, at least temporarily. Grumbles of open dissent are still to be seen and heard, with little the authorities can do against so universal an action, but any risk of further trouble is averted.

-The reformist agenda hits a stumbling block. The anti-reformists quickly band together, whilst the reformists and divided by the issue of the affairs in Tuscany. Whilst not technically the issue at hand, they do sow bitter blood between the reformists, who divided further into the pro and anti Doge factions. Therefore, any concessions they gain are limited – and do little to improve the things they wish for.

-As mentioned, the Venetian public are buoyant, and the common man seems to get behind the Doge in these times. The city is prospering, and different sections of society are benefiting, even if the proceeds overwhelmingly go to the merchant class profiting from the Ottoman trade.

Portugal

-After a year of fruitless negotiation, the king finally makes progress, with the Oportonites slowly gaining more ground. By the end of the year, they have a narrow primacy over the navy that can, with formal royal support, be allowed to dominate naval affairs, and push the navy forward. Reports steadily push toward imitating the British model in everything.

-The expedition to the Cape Verde peninsula is a stunning success. Establishing prosperous relations with the natives, slaves and ivory are traded at a mighty profit. Noblemen and merchants in Portugal quickly rush to back further colonial projects, and this is seen as proof that Portugal is capable of handling an Empire.

-The companies reject partial ownership of the crown, preferring to keep their own independence. They continue to do well.

China

-The 10,000 troops are raised, elite and loyal. Well equipped and professional. Too loyal, as it turns out. Tired from the obscure tactics of the warlords, one of the new yeomen fighters gets into a brawl with a nobleman. In the end, a mini turf war ensues, with shots fired. Only the intervention of government officials prevents further escalation. Further tension between the new soldier-settlers and the locals is expected.

-After all the troubles with the local warlords, a damning report issued by a magistrate and sent to the Emperor personally gives one conclusion: the issue was never with the warlords, but with the magistrates themselves. Their arrogant and over-zealous behaviour, shortly after a war, did not do them any favours, whilst the new banner army reflects this, with 10,000 troops arrogantly plonked in inconvenient places by magistrates to deliberately get the ire of the petty lords. This rivalry, it is found, does not go away.

-Expanded shipyards progress well, and seem to instantly improve on the originals by the end of the year. This gives fresh prospects of better designs in future years.

-The trade proves indeed prosperous, but plans for coastal forts have difficulty in their implementation. Building forts so far away from home is found to be difficult, with the Ottoman advisors having difficulty in working with the Chinese, as Qing officers have difficulty in seeing things from their western point of view. In the end, only a few of the promised forts are constructed, and little is achieved by them being built.

-The silk road patrol successfully secures the route, purging many bandit bands from the region, whilst also giving the cavalry vital experience.

-The military observers bring back vital information from the Battle of Krovaviy Hill, among others. They learn much about the western way of war, with some beginning to wonder as to its superiority. The infantry advance of the Janisarries particularly affects observers, leading one to comment: ‘they are not bad, these Turks.’

GB

-Negotiations begin, but exemptions from the Christian Ban are found to be more difficult to secure than expected. With the bad blood from persecution of Catholics and the resulting rebellions still fresh in the mind of many, it is a bitter pill to swallow. The negotiations drag on for a year with little result.

-The HEIC in Bengal set up their colony, whilst has little effect on the Company or her fortunes, or British control of the region. The local Nawabs and their allies still control the vast bulk of territory and manpower outside of the British ports. The new men are successfully recruited.

-Glasgow seems reluctant to convert, with but a few dozen won over to the Church. Meanwhile, the incident temporarily indisposed the princess, causing her to have to temporarily cease, although she will return more determined and popular than ever.

-The new shipyards, and Calais’ in particular, prove a moderate success. Calais gets a chance to put his ambitious theories to the test, it proving an important learning curve for him, in which he makes many mistakes. This is largely what holds the project back and prevents it from being a larger triumph, but Hammond encourages this experimentation in order to engender hard-won experience in his bright pupil.

-Trade with the natives is quickly expanded, drawing fresh profits for the colony and attracting new settlers.

-The Japanese are more open to discussing trade, with the Emperor, and indeed, the country, flattered by the British gifts. It seems the merchant has won the heart of the Japanese man, in some ways ‘going native.’ Negotiations for a permanent arrangement are expected to drag on for another year, however.

-The second St. Lawrence mission is a success, inspiring European hearts and seeming to inspire a new fervour for trade and exploitation of the region. The number of settlers in the northern parts of British America is marked by a heavy increase.

Commonwealth

-The nobles get the impression that they are being spied on, and speak very little of any use.

-The new military academy is an embarrassing flop. Riddled with corruption and favouritism, the powerful magnates quickly co-opt the project, sending their own sons, however incompetent, to be trained. Run by over-prestigious dimwits, the academy sows great confusion among the officer class.

Savoy

-The system of intendants is a success. Adminstration quickly becomes more centralised, more effective and more prosperous, proving a boon for the royal treasury.

Spain

-See article.

-This new targeted sponsorship campaign is successful in garnering loyalty among large sections of the Catholic population. But it will be some years before the effects will be fully realised. It is a much needed boon to a country threatened by war, with relief provided to many.

-The Californian expedition is a stunning success. Large numbers of the natives are converted in a very short period, whilst California is found to be continuous: part of the American continent. Suitable land for a colony is found at San Francisco.

-After an initial honeymoon with the gifts, relations with local kings in Madagascar are found to be difficult. A small outpost is established, but many of the settlers and soldiers died of disease along the way, greatly weakening the outpost. Forced to adopt caution, contact with natives becomes limited, whilst the outpost becomes a footnote.

-The ship sails through the bountiful East Indies, emerging on the other side (Will send route.)

-Hopes of replacing the pike in 5 years are found to be too over-ambitious: many of the new officer class are still young and lack authority. The pike is expected to be phased out in 8 years.

-New siege techniques greatly increase the speed the Spanish can breach the walls, launch a surprise attack, or block off supply routes. Tilly gains the nickname ‘Poliorcetes’ or ‘THe Besieger’ for his new tactics, which gain fame across Europe.

-With the focus on offensive and the matter at hand, fort designs are less successful. However, some minor improvements are made.

-New shipyards are a success. The cost of reforming the army and the ongoing war makes these improvements relatively minor.

Year: 1686
Duke: Maximillian II Emanuel von Wittelsbach

Maximillian II would adjourn the Bavarian Council, his group of advisors with which he’d been talking all day now. The council of officers, administrators and noblemen had been held to discuss the future of Bavaria in the years to come, with the Turks posing a growing threat in the East, Spanish and British influence growing, and half of the Holy Roman Empire adhering to Protestantism, the entire council agreed it was time for Bavaria to step up its game. And the path they decided on, was one of reforms and progress.

Domestic Policy

As part of the reforming proces, a new administrative system is installed that is meant to help with the centralization of the Duchy. Bavaria is split into counties, called Landkreisen, each having about the same population size.

Along with this, in each Landkreis, a census is held to accurately record how many houses, inhabitants and other noteworthy characteristics the Landkreis holds. The administrators of each Landkreis then pass on their information to the governing body in München. This way, Duke Maximillian hopes more soldiers will be able to be drafted in wartimes and taxes will be able to be collected in a more accurate and efficient manner.

Economic Policy
The Bayerische Landesbank is founded as the National Bank of Bavaria, its goal being to establish a central authority for financial matters, especially for matters like inflation rates, state loans and organizing the financial market.

Bavarian scholars, scientists and the Bavarian Army’s Engineer Corps have convinced Duke Maximillian to send a letter to French Scientist Denis Papin, who recently left France in favor of Hesse, inviting the man to come to München to further develop his work there with government funding, skilled craftsmen and anything else he could need for his scientific efforts.

Foreign Policy

Austrian and Bavarian ambassadors sign a treaty to promote economic prosperity between the two allied countries. Trafficking of goods across the Austro-Bavarian border is made tax-free, the Austrian government grants some sizeable investments in the Bavarian economy and Austrian merchants are allowed to set up manufacturing workshops in München.

An anonymous Bavarian spy is sent to the Palatine capital of Heidelberg to set up a network of contacts around the Palatine Duke, aiming to make a setup for some sort of plot.
