The Jackal Sect is the field unit of the organization known as the A C S. Tasked with the collection or destruction of anomalies and artifacts deemed hostile or potentially damaging to the descendants.

Oriented around event and ‘anti-dark’ RP, we strive for heavy character building, IC research / investigation, risk / consequence and militant RP. At this time, we have little to no interest in the political climate of the server and have no intent to really get involved.

Guild History

Spoiler

The A C S, originally known as the Broken Lance company, was founded by John “The Greedy” Selm, his brother Edward Selm and a dozen disgruntled farmers following a dispute over a local lord of Redna, Lord Richmond, and his tax hike. Unbeknownst to the common people of Redna, a subterranean threat, only referred to as ‘The Brood’, had been waging a costly war on the allied neighboring kingdom of Ackaland.

Lord Richmond of Redna, a farming village of only 63, answered the call of his King and began to cart off goods to the stronghold city of Kilika in quantities three times that of the previous decade. The village’s stores exhausted and a particularly cruel harvest season brought about an event known as, “The Day of the Wilted Harvest,” in which 42 men and women stormed their lord’s estate with makeshift weapons consisting of farming tools and dinnerware. Guarded by only 5 men, 3 of which were out of shape and out of practice, the farmers of Redna beheaded Lord Richmond, and murdered 2 of his guardsmen. The conflict is said to have lasted but seven minutes and in that time, the Lord’s head was marched from his quarters to the outer gates of his estate and piked atop a lamp post. The remaining guards were publicly executed the following day and shipments to Kilika were ceased.

John, a local merchant and opportunist, quickly established himself as a figurehead of the village. He’d made claim to the remnants of the lord’s estate and in exchange, promised to evenly distribute the goods and wealth of the estate to the people of Redna, a promise he would fail to keep. Three days after the murder of Lord Richmond, John had his brother Edward bring their cart about the back of the estate where a dozen hired hands, farmers of Redna that had abandoned the idea of peaceful life following their actions, loaded the cart with every last object of value in Richmond’s estate, down to the Silver cutlery and stationary. The men departed in the dead of night, uncertain of their futures. Simply headed east, the goods were sold or exchanged for materials needed on their aimless journey with each stop at the neighboring villages and towns. Eventually, the men grew tired of aimless wandering and John began to preach the concepts of banditry to his followers, an idea that enraged Edward and most of the men.

Discussions rose into arguments and arguments into fights. Eventually, the men settled on the idea of offering their services to caravans as guardsmen under the name, “Broken Lance,” a cruel joke directed toward their eldest member’s impotence. The last of the company’s funds were spent on damaged, ill forged and near worthless armaments and the men began to offer their services. Many of their initial jobs were without event, the men following the carts to their destination then taking a day at the local tavern only to follow the next caravan out of town. Having amassed a fair bit of coin, the men took to better arming themselves and more men were hired on. Eventually, the company’s reputation spread and a job was offered near routinely that’d made both John and Edward’s stomachs turn, the execution of the peoples of Redna so that Kilika’s supply line of farmed goods might be re-established by more loyal subjects.

Unable to direct their personal armies to retake the land, Baron Ichelin invited John and Edward to a party in his estate. During the party, the brothers were drugged, beaten and threatened with death. John was taken hostage and Edward was given the task of securing Redna, else his brother would be executed and the company arrested for fabricated crimes of treason. Begrudingly, Edward led the company in a midnight raid on Redna. The people of the village were scattered and Redna was surrendered to a small detachment of Ichelin’s forces. John was, as agreed, returned to Edward and the two fled North toward Kilika. During their travels, Edward wordlessly departed in the night, sickened with his actions alongside 6 of the company’s original men. For a time, it was rumored the men collectively committed suicide though this was never confirmed.

John was, for two year’s time, broken. He rarely spoke to his men, drowned himself in spirits and lived life as but a shell of himself. During this time, the company came to be headed by Arthur Stroll, a crutch the company had come to rely upon for the man’s talent on the field and his quick thinking in situations of near impossible odds. The Broken Lance had become known as accomplished field skirmishers and an excellent auxiliary force, earning Heinerich Killry, the King of Kilika’s attentions. The men were shipped off to the fronts of Ackaland in a war that felt like a battle against the darkness itself. Their first battle against The Brood was a total defeat and a third of the company was lost, John amongst the losses. Men twisted by dark magics and lusting ever onward for more power, The Brood pressed their assaults time after time. Waves of fire would reduce squadrons to ash, walls of ice would deadlock men in unwinnable battles and a creeping sickness sapped the life from men in a matter of hours. The battle nearing its perceivable end for the Broken Lance, something akin to a miracle occured. John and Edward surfaced with a batallion of men, their arms and armor of foreign, alien-even, make. The magics of The Brood faltered as the brothers and their men drew near and over the course of a week, The Brood were pressed back into an Iron-mine, the tunnels of which were said to pierce deep into the earth and to go on for miles.

Unsure of what to make of the sudden appearance of both John and Edward, Arthur broke away from camp one night and allegedly snuck into John’s tent, intent on having a word with the man. Arthur words on the matter were, “John stood in the center of a circle drawn in blood, a green stone in his palms, about the size of a young man’s head. He gave praise to the stone, thanked it for the return of his brother and pledged his services to it for as long as he drew breath.” This, as one might assume, stirred Arthur and he broke away from the camp of the foreign men and retreated to the camp of the Broken Lance where he was greeted by Edward who questioned where he’d been and spoke of a new assignment. Arthur, fearful for his life and driven by curiosity of what trick lay before him, agreed. Within the hour, the Broken Lance and roughly 200 of Edward’s men descended into the tunnels of the mine. The fighting was described as crawling through the bowels of a great demon, its insides intent upon killing you with blades and stones at every turn and the shadows themselves played host to countless threats. Eventually, the winding tunnels led to a series of chambers, each housing an item of mundane appearance. The men of the Broken Lance were threatened on more than one occassion as they attempted to collect the items and Edward laid claim to each and every artifact in passing.

The Dark Magi were eventually ground to dust and battle was declared won. But a dozen men returned to the surface from the Broken Lance, the men, Demons as the men of the Broken Lance came to know them, loyal to Edward seemed to of suffered very few if any losses amidst the chaos. At the surface, John welcomed his soldiers and the remnants of the Broken Lance, commenting on the pleasant surprise in seeing their faces again. Morale teetering on broken, the company trailed behind the anomaly that laid before them on the march back to Kilika. Intent on finding an excuse, any excuse to flee, the men of the Broken Lance were eventually moved to the center of the march and Edward positioned himself amidst the remnants, saying little but keeping a blatant eye on the men. Eventually, they arrived in Kilika to a mixed reception. The men loyal to John and Edward were frowned upon as ‘ugly foreigners’ and their deeds were spoken of as unnatural and a greater threat than that of The Brood. Killry offered the brothers elevated status as lords. John, without hesitation, lept upon the opportunity. Edward, however, quietly declined and expressed an interest in simply serving his brother. Having little to say on the matter, Killry offered the brothers a modest port town by the name of Hag’s Spire on the edges of his kingdom.

The following day, the men departed and headed for Hag’s Spire. Upon arrival, a modest fortress was erected and a set of tunnels were dug deep into the earth under the fortress. Akin to holdings of The Brood, a series of chambers were hollowed and the artifacts were contained within them. The men of the Broken Lance were forbidden from entering the fortress and threatened with death should they ever be found within the tunnels.

Under the watchful eye of Edward, the Broken Lance was disbanded and a secondary entity was erected in its place. The Broken Lance’s remnants were forced into enlisting in Edward’s inhuman army and the men were sent off to distant lands on suicidal tasks, slaying monsters and securing artifacts, each hauled off to the chambers under the fortress of Hag’s Spire. Generally viewed as incompetent and incapable by Edward’s men, The Broken Lance were isolated and often left alone to tend to the particularly gruesome tasks in hopes of seeing the men dead. Time and time again, Arthur led his mean to victory, fulfilling their tasks and sending home dozens of artifacts. Eventually, the men were tasked with raiding a temple said to house holy artifacts wrongfully stolen by heretics. Unable to refuse, Arthur led his men into the temple, slaughtered the monks and collected the artifacts. On their return home, Edward’s men stopped Arthur and his men, put them into shackles and led them to Kilika. They stood a particularly one-sided trial and were sentenced to death, a sentence halted by John’s abrupt appearance and declaration. Instead, the men were branded Jackals, war criminals, and exiled but were still expected to serve the purposes of their Lord.

Arthur and his Jackals were sent out into the world with a small detachment of Edward’s men. In the decades since their departure, the organization has become known as the Anomaly Containment Society and any mention or influence of John and Edward have faded from perspective. The Jackals, however, remain the dumping grounds for the unwanted and exiled to this day.

One, disarmed child in stained threads and a state of hygiene to be pitied, stiffened up, lugged his shortsword, then lashed out for the third time at the trunk of an inanimate scarecrow. It stared him back, silent as the moon, with a loose smile cleft upon its wood.

”Tragic thing . .” the battered figurine grumbled in, unannounced.

Boots caked in mud and shovel caked in ash, Aldrik, a middle aged Highlander with an ever receding hairline paces through the swamps. In his right, he’d grasp the neck of an urn, bits of dirt and ash smeared over its face. The words still echoed in his head and he drove onward against fatigue, in a daze. Hours had been spent seeking some remnants, some single bit of fabric to tie the man to the place. Ultimately, his efforts yielded nothing. Amidst the ash, the bone and shattered steel, nothing distinguishable remained. A companion had simply vanished. In silent anguish Aldrik did the only thing he could, hoping to put some morsel of a lost companion to rest.

[!] A young man, schooled in service to the Sect, came to bear the guild's insignia.

It would depict their pennant, signifying the end of five-years in training, and the transition from fledgeling to Jackal.

Upon its iron was engraved the youth’s name, and the plight from which he had been inducted;

Bedrich of Morce, an orphan of war.

The distinct chaotic song of construction about New Hilden has come to an end and the once rhythmic beating of hammers has been replaced by the routine cries of practiced struggle. Recruits from Heckelin have returned to the Sect and local recruitment has been opened. Men once soft will be shaped and molded to serve greater purpose.
