Nation applying for:

The Despotate of Tarentum

History of your Nation:

v8EUgKA.png

The area Tarentum occupies is one of rich history, born first of Greek colonization of the southern Italian coasts. Tarentum, otherwise known as Taras, was one of the only colonies ancient Sparta ever chose to form and was met with war at several occasions. While stagnant during the Peloponnesian War, it participated in several other conflicts that would eventually cement its place as a regional power in the area – at one point ruling over many of the Greek colonies in the boot of Italy. It, in light of independence from the Empire, has opted to return to its roots and embrace a return of ancient Greek culture in stark contrast to their centuries of servitude under the Empire. This is all led by the beloved military leader Alessandro Calban, a man who paved the way for Tarantino independence from the Empire and is adored by the people. He has since adopted the regal name Aleksandros Callias and rules his territory in perpetuity under the pretext of stabilizing the region. Though internal conflicts have been largely subdued due to the approving citizenry, wealthy ex-Senators have flocked to the area demanding a return to democracy – a situation Aleksandros and his council are weary of. While Tarentum may enjoy a semblance of stability at the moment, this is certain to change as these ex-Senators and gentry return to power. Some may say it is a powder keg, but Aleksandros says it is his home, a place he is desperate to return to power and prominence at the regional stage.

Leader:

His Despotic Majesty Aleksandros Callias, Basileus of Tarentum and Protector of the Tarantino People

Then ye shall come up after him, and he shall come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead; and I have appointed him to be prince over Israel and over Judah.

And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said: 'Amen; so say the LORD, the God of my lord the king.”

 -1 Kings 1:35-36

A nation wrought out of from the cold grasps of the iron shackles of slavery. Slaves to the Pharoahs of Egypts, slaves to the Kings out of Media, slaves to the Kings out of Greece, and out of Gaul. An entire nations destiny  collared by the leash of foreign outsiders, numerous times, only to reach freedom by the steady hand of a watching God, a merciful God, a God of their people, a God that lead them to a land of milk and honey. All in vain, as it was only to be forced to the whip and lash once more by centuries of masters. Many were cruel, and hated, and many were gentle, and loved. Yet none, save an isolated few, were theirs.

Yet, in the midst of all these strifes, the Jews, a hardy folk, persisted, as master andeEmpire rose, and crumbled. Every master that came, sought to harm the people of David. For many years, the Pharaoh tried to enslave it, yet Moses, with the help of God,  lead the people of Israel through the Exodus, and introduced them to their promised land. Thereafter, the Damned-King Nebuchadnezzar came, and set the land to the torch as he expelled their people from their land, beginning the first exile. Centuries later. the Babylonians crumbled into the dust, their place taken by the Medians, yet the Jewish nation remained strong, prospering in their new homes. The Jews remained in exile, until His anointed one, Cyrus the Great, a gentle ruler, allowed the people to return to their homes, abandoned centuries before by a harsh king. Thus, with his edicts ended the first and second exiles. A period of peace ensued, where the temple was rebuilt and prophets were bountiful in the land. Then came the Greeks, who imposed harsh laws, suppressing the rules that have been inscribed in stone thousands of years prior. The Maccabees, a noble band of warriors, rose up in response to the Greeks and their vile despots, and struck them down, establishing the first Jewish nation in many centuries. The third exile ended, peace came, and all was well for a time. Yet, then came the Gauls, a nation who with their savage methods of warfare and bonded hair struck the noble jews down, no doubt as retribution for straying away from the divine path. These Gauls, attempted to impose upon us the teachings of a false prophet, Jesus ‘Christ’, after we rightfully had him put to the cross for his endless spout of slander and heresies. Revolts and unrest came shortly after, and out of spite, the Gauls drove us from our lands once more, commencing the fourth and final exile according to the prophecy of Daniel.

After the Gallic Empire had become decrepit and weak, a noble man, of Davidic descent, rose up to lead the Jews out of the Gallic shackles, out of the final exile, per the prophecy of Daniel. Abraham ben Gamliel, a nasi of the Hebrew nation, a warrior-priest was inspired by a vision of a massive temple standing once more, in the city of David, Jerusalem. A righteous man, he listened to the cries of his people, and lead the Jews back into their homelands, against the whims of the waning Gauls. Thousands of Jews trekked through foreign, hostile territory back into the promised land in a scene reminiscent of that of the revered journey out of Egypt. The Gauls were forced to end the exile, and the Jews, spread throughout the corners of the world, returned to the very same lands their forefathers had abandoned centuries before, when the Gauls were feared and respected. It is here, then, when the first brick was set in the Jewish nation. Abraham, in his prime then, was a learned scholar, and had read the Holy Scrolls countless times, and was fully aware of the prophecy, a prophecy that was fulfilled. The Fourth and final Exile ended, and a Jewish state, the final one for all eternity, would need to rise, for it was the will of their G-d. And it was so. On the first passover the Jews celebrated in the promised land, Abraham ben Gamliel lead an angry mob throughout the streets of Jerusalem. Thousands of Jewish citizens marched through the streets in his program, slaughtering the remains of the gaullish garrison warding the ancient city. After a week of chaos, fires, and violence, the last soldiers holding out in the last Herodian stronghold fell to Abraham and his men, and a Kingdom of Judea was announced, on the steps of the Temple Mount. The Gaullish soldiers were all crucified, to spite them in the same manner the Gauls had mass crucified the Jews on their arrival. Much of the city was ruined, including the Holy Church of the Gauls, amongst other important buildings. Yet even so, Abraham, when the Holy city was his,he turned outwards, beyond the thick stone walls of the Davidic city. He and his army of zealots went campaigning across Judea, seizing town after town, city after city. Many times, Abraham arrived to see a line of Gauls burning in the desert sun, nailed to the cross, behind a slaughtered lamb and other burnt offerings to the Lord. And this put a smile on his face.

All of Judea fell to Abraham, and the jewish people had finally been imparted with a just savior. However, the success of the new Hebrew nation were the envy of others. The Gauls had abandoned their losses, and extracted their last men from their last fortified position in the land, and finally the land was Jewish, at last, what they had been waiting for. Yet, there were still those who sought to test the new nation, God's chosen people. The Great  Median Empire to the east, wrongly thought the newborn nation was weak, and sought to bring the Jewish nation to their heel, as they had done thousands of years before during a time when the nation had strayed from the words of scripture, the word of their G-d. Now was not that time. Droves of Persians flooded over the river Jordan, spouting their flame-worshipping nonsense, burning temples and slaughtering Jews by the thousands. Every alley they swept through was stacked with resistance, and stoned streets of Jewish towns were stained red with the blood of persians. Yet they were many, and when one died, three more came to take his place. The persians were a strong foe, and they conquered a vast part of Judea, even reaching the gates of Jerusalem itself. For a time, it seemed as if it were all a sham, a intricate game played by their God. Yet, to refute all other claims, Masada, a fortress manned by merely 200 men, still held out against an army nearly a hundred times that size. As long as the men at Masada held strong, the nation of Israel survived.

“Masada will not fall again…”

-King Abraham,

on the gates of Jerusalem fending off a Persian siege.

The persians and their unholy armies crossed Judea, and flooded into Egypt. Their generals were smart, brilliant even, and every army they meet on the field was met with defeat. Except for Abraham. Jerusalem would have been a crown jewel, for the Persians, and for many years they besieged it. Yet no matter how many catapults, how many trebuchets, how many men they would toss carelessly at the walls, the Jews would not bend. For years, the scene was the same. An endless siege, trebuchets wreaking havoc on the roads and buildings, yet the wall remained firm, drenched in the blood of Medians. It was only when an army arrived from the north, after routing a Persian army, that the siege was broken, and Jerusalem was relieved. The city was safe, yet swathes of the king’s land still remained under occupation of the enemy. Abraham, riding at the behest of a united host of the people of Israel, retook his lands, and forced the Persians to return, all the way in Egypt now, over the river Jordan to their temples of fire and desert cities. Victory was declared at Masada, which never fell to the invaders, and Judea was Jewish once more.

 KING ABRAHAM BEN GAMLIEL

Nation applying for: The Kingdom of Wales

BRIEF History of your Nation: After taking its independence from the Imperial State, Wales swiftly found itself alone in a broken British state. After Cadwallon ap Cadfan died to achieve the independence of Wales, his son Cadwaldr, now King of Gwynned began a conquest of his own. Within a year the King of Powys had submitted causing Gwent to follow suit not long after, peacefully. While parts of the country were occupied the Sea Kings, Cadwaldr looked elsewhere to the south where his uncle, Cynfor ap Cadfan ruled, though he had grown quite old. Rather than fight King Cadwaldr waited, and within the decade Cynfor died with no issue, leaving Cadwaldr as the King of a united Wales since the Imperial State had taken control. In the year 685, Cadwaldr died peacefully in his old age leaving his son Idwal to rule the Kingdom, but it swiftly fell from the golden age of Cadwaldr ap Cadwallon. New Kings of Pomys and Gwent soon arose, threatening to again throw off their shackles likening the new Welsh state to that of the one which had nearly been forgotten. The rebellion lasted a decade until Idwal ap Cadwaldr was slain by the Pretender King of Pomys in the Battle of the Rock where his son Rhodri then took up his sword and killed the pretender and ended the northern rebellion for good. Not long after his army south where they met the army of the King of Gwent. As the rebellion began, Idwal had begun to train longbowmen in Wales though they had never seen the battle with King Idwal insisting they continue to train. They joined the army of King Rhodri on its march south, and as the King of Gwent, Meurig ap Tewdrig and his army began its charge they had not expected the rain of arrows which soon fell upon them and struck down their king, having known the army of King Idwal relied largely on crossbowmen and other divisions. As the longbowmen continued to shoot what seemed to be an endless barrage of arrows upon rebels, nearly five-and-ten found their way to the Meurig, leaving the army to scatter upon its loss. Five years later the Kingdom of Wales had remained peaceful after the sack of Caerwent where the family of King Meurig and his last supporters were brutally slaughtered.

Nation applying for: The Highland Confederacy
BREIF History of your nation:

Caledonia, as the Imperials refer to the region, is comprised of a number of differing tribes and kingdoms. Yet in Pictland, seven of these kingdoms have been members of a Highland Confederacy - which year by year, has come to look more like a kingdom. The Confederacy began as a purely defensive alliance of clans, pooling their armies together with powerful results to repel Roman legions. The Confederacy however, has become increasingly centralized. The King of Pictland now rules over it from an established capital at Scone, the traditional coronation place and location of the Confederate Moot. Though he enjoys titles, privileged in taxation and wartime leadership, the legacy of the Pictish kingdoms has maintained their autonomy. Kingship is based solely upon one's ability to wage war on his neighbors. The Confederacy has defended itself successfully from foreign threats when needed- yet it remains constantly primed for civil war and strife upon the drop of a pin. The ruling Alban dynasty has only held onto power for forty-two years. Clans fight with one another freely; the region is rarely at peace.

Culturally, the region adopted Christianity in large part thanks to the efforts of St. Columbia. The outer fringes of Pictland are dotted with Christian Monasteries which furiously produce beautiful manuscripts- the most valuable luxury item in the whole of the Isles.

Nation applying for: Crimean Khanate

BREIF History of your Nation:

As the Borjigin mongols drove westerwards they came in contact with turkic kipchaks, mixing quickly began as the Borjigin, led by Bodonchar Munkhang, incorporated various kipchak tribes. This mixture of peoples resulted in the “tatars”. Bodonchar settled in the middle of the scythian steppe, dividing his tribe upon his death, his son receiving parts.

One of his sons, Bodonchar Batu, known as Batu Khan, led his host south, moving to the old Kingdom of the Bosporus. The greek colony had been in a long state of decline over the centuries, being subject to countless raids from northern steppe peoples, both of turkic and indo-european extraction. This led to an easy occupation of northern crimea. Whilst cities in the north like Tanais along the Don river had fallen, cities like Kimmerikon, Theodosia and Scythian Neapolis resisted the northern advances of the tribes. A local despot had arisen, Alexandros Gabras, claiming the title of “Basileius of Kimmerikon”, and as a military man he proved to be a competent leader, causing the Tartars many defeats. Seeing that the south would not yield Batu Khan approached Alexandros and a compromise was met: Batu would marry one of Alexandros’ daughters and their progeny will inherit both the Khanate and the greek colonies.

Batu married Alexandros’ daughter, Athena, the ceremony being performed in both the hellenic and tengri rites. With the death of the aged Alexandros, Batu placed his son, Aegimon (Ayushiridara in Tatar), as Basileius of Kimmerikon. The aged Batu spent the remainder of his life subjugating surrounding tribes and greek colonies.

Passing away, Aegimon ascended as both Basileius to the greeks, and Khan to his father’s people. The fusion of greek and turkic beginning in his reign. To cement this he took the name of Bargion-Garbas (Bargion being the hellenised version of Borjigin).

Nation applying for: The Despotate of Syracuse

BREIF History of your Nation:

The city of Syracuse has been defined by its struggle to preserve its autonomy and Greek identity despite being surrounded by unfamiliar and larger neighbors. An ancient city, on the cusp of a millennia old, Syracuse has served as a vital port linking the east, Africa, and Italy, via the Mediterranean Sea. However, its strategic location has made it a target for as long as its been around. In more ancient times, the city found allies in its Greek sister cities, often banding together with them in order to resist the imperial ambitions of the warring states around it The city fell under the firm grasp of a multitude of dictators, tyrants, and despots, but each were able to keep the city out of the hands of its neighbors.

As the years grew on, the Syracuse’s distinct Greek identity would begin to fade as people from all over the Mediterranean found home within its wall. When the city was finally taken by the Franks after a long siege of three years, it fell into a state of decline. Though it was still a vital Mediterranean port city, the city’s freedom and unique identity had been all but snuffed. However, the city’s spirit of independence had not been crushed, and when the Italian states revolted against its Frankish overlords, Syracuse was quick to join the rebellion. Taking advantage of the relatively light Imperial presence in Sicily, the Syracusian armies were able to inflict a few key defeats on the Frankish forces, driving them from the island by 643. In 646, Syracuse launched an attack on the island of Sardinia, easily defeating the tiny Imperial garrison within a few months. By the time the war had ended, the city found itself independent once again, but still in the precarious situation it had been in since a thousand years ago.

Nation applying for: Ionia
History: Ionia, originally, was an Athenian colony, having been founded a thousand years BCE.  Even if the state has evolved over time, it still remained an important center of trade, likely along with Athens, and a link between all nations in western Europe, and those north of Ionia.
Once, Miletus, a city in the State of Ionia, due to the many colonies it had, was famed to be one of the richest in the Greek world. This city, later in history, would also be praised for an intellectual revolution. A man named Thales, also from Miletus, would also suggest that natural phenomena would have causes, not supernatural, but natural, as he believed in the world having its own set of laws. He would be one of the first, if not the first, to deviate from the traditional way of thinking, which heavily relied on religion and religious stories.
Miletus would go on to eventually influence the other Ionian cities. This means that, while the traditional Greek belief system was still the main one , many, though not by majority, slowly deviated from many of the concepts taught by Greek mythology.

In the later periods of history, when Christianity became relevant and presumably was introduced to Ionia, it was first incorporated into the Ionian religion, but later instead dominated the region with only a small percentage of the population worshipping the traditional gods. Even though the population was still somewhat divided,  no important conflicts have occurred due to religion.
Its government is a monarchy, though somewhat influenced by Athenian democracy, in which, while the King holds many powers(Notably religious and military), an elected council still exists. The monarchy was introduced soon after Christianity was, meaning some five hundred years before current times. A King, claiming to have had the right of God and the gods to ascend to supreme power. After a struggle for power between him and the old Government, he emerged victorious and his heirs have ruled the State ever since.
The Monarchs, while having accorded some importance to the military, still encouraged intellectuals to develop theories and technology, believing in its potential.
