Immortality & Aging

This thread covers the stance currently taken on lore that includes immortality.

Aging

Aging is an odd thing on the server. Ideally everyone should age, but it’s not something that is strictly enforced. Why is that? It boils down to the benefits/costs of enforcing it. For simplicity’s sake we’ll divide the server into two groups. The casual and the serious side. The casual side logs in every now and then to RP, not getting heavily invested in the happenings of the server but still being around enough to enjoy what they are doing and to partake in what’s going on. The serious side logs in near daily and constantly contributes to RP on the server or to doing things on the server in some capacity.

Someone who might only be able to log in twice a week will not get as much out of their character as they age compared to a person who logs in six times a week. So if we enforced aging, we’d be upsetting a large portion of the community. So let’s say we went through with it, what is the benefit of it? A minor continuity boost, with maybe seeing the side effect of more people making elves or to bypass the aging. The cost of upsetting the casual players outweighs the benefits of it. At the end of the day someone who is having their character age slower than the others is not really harming anyone, and if the community around them dislikes the character for it, they can handle it in roleplay as many groups have done ostracizing characters of this nature.

The only part of aging that is enforced is if you are RP’ing a character who is older than they could be canonically. If you are claiming that your human is 250 years old OOCly, we’re going to step in. This is actively lorebreaking and is less tricky to enforce.

Immortality

With the above in mind, aging is still something that is advocated for and as such immortality is something seen as a legitimate boon. It gives those properly RP’ing aging something for their character to strive for. It is also a boon that should not be thrown around willy nilly. If a person is getting immortality, there should be something balancing it. For example, certain creatures receive immortality in exchange for having to fulfill some duty or purpose IRP. This ensures that the person getting immortality has to make use of it and create RP for those around them.
