Fintons

Origin

The Phoenix, as all have heard tales of, is a majestic firey bird that once it dies returns in a burst of flames. Though these birds do exist, there are hybrids of phoenixes and humans. This only happened due to one of the birds being experimented with and having its properties bestowed on a human child magically. The effects of this transferring of abilities changed the biological structure of the human slightly. This is how the FIntons came into existence. So, in a way, some phoenixes are more humanoid than one would expect. Half-human and half-phoenix, the mix created a new species. The Fintons never really roamed the earth, as they do not reproduce often (they tend to be recluses and can only reproduce during a certain time) with many becoming scholars. There is a tale that arose from one of the creatures as during a masquerade there was an accident involving an open flame and the original Finton’s costume caught fire. Not knowing it was a Finton, it ran panicking and ended up failing to put out the growing flames. Once it died, the other humans around who were of no help gave it a not-so-proper burial. After two months of being dead, smoke was seen rising from a nearby trench of the unnamed village. Once fearful individuals checked it out, they saw the costume lit afire with the Finton rising from its grave. Fleeing, they told and sang stories of a ‘dead-man walking’. Hunting parties chased it down and shot the Finton dead with an arrow from a longbow, but were unable to find its corpse until another month later once smoke rose from inside the forest. Once more, the Finton was seen as something to fear and not just a fearful being behind a mask, so the story of the Finton is very misinformed. In some areas, the tales of dead men walking are told with an air of danger to it. Children are warned to stay away from such beings. They dubbed the creature a Finton, after the last name of the person that died at the ill-fated party. Fintons are humanoids that can pass through the streets unnoticed and look exactly like humans, but are also somewhat feared despite being similar to humans.

TLDR: Phoenix/Human hybrids are humanoid creatures known as Fintons, and they tend to be regarded with fear at first.

Physical Description

Fintons look very similar to humans. In fact, biologically there is no difference except for a portion of the brain seems to be slightly different as there is an extra part on the frontal lobe. Due to this, it can only live as long as an average human before having to die and be reborn. Strangely enough, the brain has been destroyed and the finton still returns after a month or two. A finton can die every way that a human can, and has no real advantages or disadvantages against them. They are a rather rare species, with only a handful in existence, and blend in anywhere humans are. However, they also despise the cold. It doesn’t hurt them, but it just gives an overwhelmingly uncomfortable feeling that they avoid it at all costs. However, most common folk do not even know that fintons exist, but elder elves and kings and queens may have heard tales or even met one. Fintons can also only be born when all of the Four Brothers constellations are visible in the sky, and if more than one child is born only one will survive while the others all perish and do not get reborn. A child finton has feathers instead of hair on top of its head, and the grow quickly, but fade into normal hair after about 5 years of age. On top of that, until the child is 18, the finton would not be able to rebirth and if killed in that time frame it would not return. However, not all children of a finton have the abilities. A child that does not have the abilities is human (and if the partner is from another race ½ human), and does not drain the finton of its rebirthing. If a finton dies not from natural causes, a scar will be seen in the form of a burn where the killing blow was placed. For example, if the finton was stabbed through the chest it would revive and have a burn mark in the shape of the wound. These scars do not go away with any rebirths, and some injuries if not crippling stay. Broken arms, burns, and superficial wounds tend to stay after rebirth as if they are a punishment for the fintons’ existence. Missing appendages (fingers and toes only) seem to stay gone for at least one rebirth if the appendage is not kept with the body during rebirth. Their rebirth will automatically start if they eat an apple or chocolate and they will have no control over it as the finton would fall to the floor and instantly light on fire. They would return momentarily with all the effects of a normal rebirth. Ice will kill a finton faster than any other weapon... and it also keeps them down longer. Rebirth will still occur, unless the ice was sent through the fintons brain where it would be perma-death, but it is slower and less powerful.  Fintons also have their fleshed burned off if they have direct contact with iron, leaving a permanent burn that doesn’t fade after rebirth and can only be healed by extremely powerful magic. On top of that, witchcraft can weaken them immensely, even stopping them from rebirthing for up to 6 months in-game. Witchcraft is also especially effective on them when their physical prowess comes into play.

Strengths: Can rise from the dead within one or two in real-life days, most people know not of its existence.

Weaknesses: Cold can be used to torture it, if the brain is removed and kept away from the phoenix’s body it will be permanently dead, can only reproduce when the Four Brothers constellation is visible, superficial wounds do not vanish with a rebirth, iron burns it badly, and they are very susceptible to witchcraft (especially when it comes to their physical abilities).

TLDR: Hate the cold, can permanently die, weak to witchcraft and iron, returns from the dead within a month or two if not killed properly, and most people do not know it exists.

Mental Description

Mindset: Its mindset is that of a human. Whatever culture raised it up in its first life, when it was born under the constellation, determines what their morals and values are. Therefore, a finton can be as evil or as good as their parents were. On top of that, fintons do not know what they are. They entirely believe that they are human.  Nothing proves otherwise unless they are detected by a magical being that senses it isn’t a human, in which case it is up to the magic-user to inform the individual. So the mindset of every finton varies. Once they die, they lose all memory of their previous life. No matter what other creatures do, the memory is lost. However, the original personality stays the same. It would be as if your best friend or mother didn’t recognize you at all. Fintons would be aware that they have memory missing, but no explanation as to why unless a friend or magic-user informs them for the first time or once more and manages to convince them. All magic and abilities they once knew and had are also forgotten and nothing can bring it back except being retaught and trained. For example if they were a master swordsman, they would have to learn how to wield a blade once more.  No matter the finton, however, they always have a soft spot for children whom they feel a strange urge to protect and keep away from those who would harm them in any way.

Mental state: Same as humans, fintons can suffer from any mental condition that humans do. PTSD, Dyslexia, Dementia, etc.  However, unlike humans, when they are reborn the issues can possibly disappear. The only times said issues stay after the transformation from the dead to the living occurs when it is interrupted from a rebirth, forced in any way to be reborn, or if they die of old age/natural causes. Once they die from natural causes, the scars on the mind have sunk deep enough that even after being reborn it will still suffer from any previous issues and only magic (or really powerful therapy) can fix it. Cold seems to have an extreme effect on the way they react to things, however. Fintons become snippy and aggressive whenever surrounded by the cold, but they also become prone to shut down and be tortured with it. The low temperatures can make a finton talk faster than any blade could. Despite this, the cold does not stop the finton from returning to the living.

TLDR: Fintons are like humans, they do not know what they are, they lose memory when they transform and can suffer from any mental illness.

Abilities

Rebirth:

Description- The finton, once slain or when it dies, will rise from the dead. If the body is intact, the transformation will take a month. If the body is destroyed, it will take two months. The brain has to either be destroyed or with the body for this to work. If the body is underwater or somewhere fires will not light, it will slowly disintegrate as if on fire (however the transformation will take 2 to three months instead for this). Flames from a resurrecting finton will do no harm to those around it, nor will it catch anything flammable on fire.

Mechanics- The finton will return from the dead if its body is intact in one IRL day (a month in the game). If the body is destroyed, it will take two IRL days (two months in-game) to resurrect itself. If the body is in an area where a fire is hard to start, add an extra month to the transformation time (2 to 3 in-game months). If killed by ice, it will significantly take longer to rebirth. 4-5 months in-game if killed by ice, 6-8 months in-game if killed by ice near the heart or brain, and they will not rebirth if ice is driven straight through the frontal lobe.

Specific Red Lines- If the brain is separated from the body, the phoenix can NOT resurrect and will be permanently deceased. Ice is permanently lethal if it goes through the brain. Rebirth is lost if they have a finton child until the child is 18.

General Redlines/Restrictions

-No matter what, unless informed, the finton does not know it is a finton.

-If the brain is separated from the body, it has to be destroyed or placed back in the body in order for the finton to resurrect, otherwise, it is permanently dead.

-Fintons hate the cold. No matter how many layers are put on.

-They can only pass for human, not any other race, without a disguise.

-As they are biologically the same as humans except for the addition to the brain, they are just as strong and weak as a human. On top of this, they also tend to live about 80 to 90 years before they die of natural causes.

-No magic or anything else can return a revived finton’s memory. It is lost for good.

-If a finton suffered a physical injury that is not life-threatening and is really only inconvenient, rebirth does not heal it.

-Cookies and Apples and Chocolate will instantly kill the finton and cause a rebirth.

-Ice is permanently lethal if it goes through the brain. No exceptions.

-If they have a finton child, the parent finton would lose rebirth abilities until the child reaches the age of 18.

Purpose

The purpose of a finton is to become the best or worst (Depends on upbringing) humanoid it possibly can be in its lifetimes. As no one is perfect, the finton consistently tries to make itself better and fix its flaws. It loses its memory when it dies due to not being able to cope with the pain of death and having two separate lives co-exist inside of its head.  The good fintons purposes are to protect those around it, no matter the cost. The evil fintons purposes are to create as much havoc in the lives of those around it as it can without being slain or affecting those it loves. The purpose of the lore itself is to add an interesting race to the world and broaden the diversity. This lore offers interesting and plausible roleplay scenarios as people try to figure out how their friend came back to life, what exactly a phoenix is, and how the creature affects the world around it. Not only that, but it offers interesting character development as the creature struggles to grasp what it is, deal with memory loss, and reconnect with old and new friends and lovers that its past self once knew. Another purpose for the finton is

tldr: Cool RP opportunities, good fintons try to help people, evil phoenixes try to create chaos, and adds diversity to the LoTC world.

Or is it really the art of NOT understanding that makes them like that?

An irl day is 1 month in-game.

This is circular logic. Its only purpose is to have people discover what it is, which wouldn’t be necessary if it didn’’t exist.

However, unlike humans, when they are reborn the issues can disappear.

So just take away anything that could make a character genuinely interesting then?

So every other character on the server then?

Phoenixes already exist as an animal, and reusing the same nomenclature is just going to get confusing. Realistically you should have come up with a different name for this CA.

I can’t see these beings as either necessary or really unique. Maybe the first two would be interesting, but people will just apply for them for pseudo-immortality and they’ll just be a tool abused by players so they feel no obligation to PK.

Needs an average life span thats more defined because right now it sounds like they're Immortal it they can just come back from old age.

Redlines are quite lacking in my opinion for being creatures that look human yet are technically immortal.

(Same creature being reborn over and over i’d count as immortality, it depends on the opinion though)

It is and isn’t at the same time. It depends on how you look at it. Cause physically it doesn’t reset entirely, but mentally it loses everything. I guess it depends on your definition of immortality. Physically, yes, it is the same creature. But without any memories at all is it really the same person? Yes, their personality stays the same but they have no connection with any of their previous allies.

Perhaps change their name a little and make them a bit different physically? It’s interesting but seems a bit OP in some terms since it’s technically immortal.

I'm trying to wrap my mind around on how this RP will be different than normal human RP. The Tinton looks exactly like a human, acts exactly like a human, and comes back from death exactly like a human.

I think it’d be cool to add more Phoenix traits to them.
