Chicago, a city nicknamed America’s Heart for it’s bolstering transport system that effectively linked the entire nation together from land, sea, and air. By the mid 21st century, the mob had more control over the city than the mayor’s office. The final straw occurred in 2061 when the mayor of Chicago bankrupted the city by constructing “The Illinois”, a massive mile-high skyscraper, in a misguided attempt to earn his city some recognition. The leader of the Chicago Outfit (Rumored to be descended from the infamous Al Capone) won the mayoral election in a landslide, effectively turning the entire windy city into mob territory. While the energy crisis of the 2060s ravaged the rest of the world, Chicago managed to stay relatively stable and the Mob reigned supreme until that fateful day; October 23, 2077.

What remains of Chicago lives up to the original namesake upon being founded in the early 19th century, The Mud City. For nearly one hundred years a volatile and turbulent storm imbued with radioactive waste had ransacked the city in total reign. The large doses of radiation made it a perfect breeding ground for all breeds of unnatural wildlife and mutated creatures descended from humans that occupied the streets nearly a century ago. Entire city blocks were ravaged by nuclear bombs, buckling the supports of dozens of skyscrapers throughout the entirety of downtown causing a maze-like ‘over-city’ hundreds of feet above the streets. The underground sewers and canals seemingly spew forth new creatures each day, a rapidly increasing number of species from crossbreeds to mutated creatures embedded with radioactive DNA. Nearly a full century, with no end to this vicious cycle.

But at long last, sunlight showered the city in its golden glow.

In the mid-2160s, the city was rediscovered by several expeditions of various parties; The NCR, The Legion, both the Western and Eastern Brotherhood of Steel, various Commonwealth factions, and dozens of raider cliques that have roamed the midwest for years on end.

Now, in 2170, the Tales of The Mud City shall be forged in blood, steel, and greed for all across the midwest to hear.

Morgan’s Rifles

Colonel Joe Morgan and his squad cautiously walk along the docks. Though the Regiment had established itself here, the Colonel wanted a feel for the new land. Their main base had been set in the warehouses and storage tanks just off the docks. From what they could find, the Reservoir protected most of their base. However that could mean nothing, or anything. The Regiment knew very little of what was around them. And with all their gear broken or inept, no scouts could be risked in this seemingly dangerous place. Reaching the end of their circuit, is a bridge leading into the unknown. Colonel Morgan looks at it with a bad feeling, and waves his troops home.

“Home” was a hodgepodge assortment of scrap huts, tents, and retrofitted rooms. The Rifle Regiment was small in number, but they were of pure Commonwealth blood. Their European heritage and training had led them this far. Joe Morgan and his Platoon leaders were the stuff of legends. They had survived the great crash of their ship. Fighting off scrap scavengers, rad mutants, and even worse. He had led this Regiment across the eastern wast and mountains, to this place. And now they were here to stay. With little options left, the Regiment plants it’s roots.

evgeniy-petlya-rifleman.jpg?1480711968

The first glaring issue was a lack of Metals for just about everything. After weeks of groaning, Lieutenant Pierre du Faunte is granted the resources he needs. He begins to select the best troops of the Regiment, to form an actual Fire Squad. As an actual Riflemen corp is formed, the rest of them focus on collecting more Metal for this big undertaking. Elsewhere the Colonel himself leads crews to build forts for the new HQ. Using the Reservoir system to their advantage, they are able to fortify key points to guard any potential crossing into their zone. Volunteers will maintain the forts as scouts, though they lack any sort of weapon....

Army of the Northwest

Year 2070

———————————————————

The remains of the old school buildings were dark, derelict, and were on the brink of collapse. But, it was the largest building under the control of Northwestern forces. Thus, it would have to do as the chief government facility. General Whitefield trekked through the ruined halls. It was a hub of activity. Sparks showered the tile floors as Army Engineers repaired the structure, or secured electric lines from the finally operational generator. Their progress was good enough, by the year’s end Whitefield’s staff and impromptu government would have a base of operations. In the courtyard, much of the Army’s remaining material was gathered and prepared for a slow assembling in the nearby buildings. The Army of the Northwest had only arrived in the Mud City days ago, and after an unforeseen explosion, they had lost nearly all of their remaining firearms.

Finally, Whitefield reached the end of the long hall. A simple door, marked by the Army’s insignia, awaited at the end. The General pushed the door open, entering into the hastily assembled meeting room. A single long table ran across the center of the room. Maps and ledgers were laid out across it. The assembly of Whitefield’s staff as well as some related personnel shot him a quick salute before he took a seat at the head of the table, brushing off his officer jacket.

“Brief me on our situation, gentlemen. How much material was lost in the munitions explosion?” The General, a now aging man said with a sigh. He ran his hand across this beard as he examined the maps before him.

Before any of the other men could reply, the Chief Engineer, Joseph Halleck speaks up, “Inventory indicates that essentially all of our firearms were lost in the explosion, sir. My company is establishing a small facility to begin working on a replacement design, but until that, we’re sitting ducks..”

“Very good Lieutenant, keep me informed of your progress, its critical to our survival.” The General replies

“In regards to our position strategically, the newly formed 1st and 3rd Company have secured the general area. Engineering units and civilian elements have begun to set up the Hydroponic equipment throughout the area. Additionally, some minor facilities to begin producing raw metals have been established.”

“Excellent, keep our focus inwards. The Army is too ill equipped to deal with any external threats at the moment. Our focus should be on the establishment of a functioning colony, as is our mission”

“Of course, sir…”

The Stone-Faces

POSTCARD - CHICAGO - JACKSON PARK - STATUE OF THE REPUBLIC - DANIEL CHESTER FRENCH - ART INSTITUTE CARD - SEPIA NICE - EARLY.jpg

‘Relic’ after her introduction during the World’s Columbian Exposition.

As the Stone-Faces wound down into their new surroundings, it was clear to most that the spirits had relented in their fury. Headman Feenix had seen his people fight through hordes of afflicted abominations, seen them curl up and expire from dehydration, or simply up and die from exhaustion. Yet when he saw on the horizon the splendor of the old park’s ruins, his faith was returned anew. At the top of the hill, brilliant golden light reflected off of her gilded carapace, the weathered words of her pedestal read, ‘The Re---lic’. A god of retribution truly did exist, and her name was ‘Relic’, an idol of the Old World preserved to protect his people from despair.

Feenix would clamber about his muddied home, helping construct the many lodgings of his tribe. Before long, the large mud plains were covered in many dwellings and it was clear enough that this land was occupied. After the preparations were finished, he had Red-Eagle take a small force of scouts north to examine the old world ruins which lay nearby. The mysterious domed building drew his curiosity ever since they had settled there, and it loomed forebodingly over his personal lodge on Wooded Island.

Population 1R/-4S/1,000C

Actions

Clan smiths and dedicated warriors get to work using the materials available to them to produce weapons to arm a larger portion of the Raiding party. Kronos himself would oversee this production to ensure they are properly armed. (1M, 240 T1 Melee)

Isabel would organize small scouting parties to the surrounding areas, being as proper weapons are in short supply for the moment the men are told to simply scout and scavenge. Hopefully either other groups worthy of a fight are found or more materials and supplies to keep the Raiders content. Isabel personally leads the group north, all other adjacent blocks are scouted by small groups of 10, 40 total. (Mod)

Rackam is unhappy with the state of the area they call home, claiming it doesn’t look intimidating enough. He forces others in his group to aid in increasing the local fortifications of their home, with Kronos’ blessing he uses this years Cap income. (Level 5 Block Fortifications, 2,500C)

Ratchet takes it upon himself to work towards ensuring his fellow Reavers are better armed, can’t make a living selling arms and armor if they all end up dead. (4R, Melee T2)

ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL

“...How far we’ve fallen.”

Was the thought that came across, General MacArthur’s mind. He stepped out onto the middle of tarmac, boots crunching upon debris and decay alike. Around him lay vast remnants of a once great civilization. Grounded planes of a once prosperous hub through which travel flowed.. And beyond that a skyline which now lay in ruins - rusted, on the brink of collapse. But for mankind, that Collapse had already happened. What left was there to even reclaim?

“Enough of that.” he scorned himself subconsciously.

That was coward’s talk. MacArthur shook his at the thoughts that lingered. While he still drew breath, he would do everything in his power to ensure the safety and growth of his people. Though few in number, they made up for it in resolve and pride. He looked to the men surrounding him, descendants of proud American servicemen and veterans. He knew he was with the most capable of people he could be with. Afterall, they had spent decades plotting their return to the surface. With that, perhaps salvation could be found and hope still had.

Having had enough of sightseeing, he stepped down from his pile of rubble, and returning to his Staff and immediately set about organizing the remnants of the Rock Island Garrison.

“Get me a team prepped and ready to scout the perimeter”

“Get this airfield fortified. As far as I’m concerned, this is our only safe haven in this hellhole.”

“We’re gonna need motors to get anywhere fast in this city. Draw up some designs.”

Goldman’s Caravan

Tobias Goldman, was a middle aged man. One of fame and riches from his previous life on the west coast, one who up until he came into Chicago. Had experienced hardships of the waste, through his travels. His group had grown quite a bit recently, and he was worried. Worried about their safety, and what else laid in Chicago.

Thomas was his second hand man, his best friend. They stood their on top of their headquarters smoking some cigarettes, as the watched their people work on some. Gathering scrap for the upcoming buildings and production that was going to be needed for some projects. “Beautiful isn’t it?” Thomas looked over to Toby, and smiled. Patting him on the back.

“Struggling to survive?” Tony Laughed. Taking a short drag off the cigarette.

“No people working together to create a common goal. We have a chance to produce something great here. We need to get out in front of this though and start expanding out. We are going to hit our production cap soon.” Thomas looked over towards the west, and then south pointing out. “These two blocks over here. Securing these should be our priority.” He finished off his cigarette and then took a drink out of his canteen. “I spoke to Sarahbeth, if we keep this pace of expansion and immigrants coming in. We won’t be able to produce anything else but food. So I allocated our scientist to her for research for the next couple years.” Thomas put his stuff away, tapped Toby on the back and walked away.

“Alrighty then.” He laughed and sat down on the roof, pulling out his journal and began tracking their supplies and production.

The Rust Baron

uiylwzQ.jpg

“A sign! A sign!”

The Tribesmen screamed in joy as they pulled an old statue up from the rubble. A man with a giant fish--the greatest fish any of them had ever seen! Truly, this would be a land of bounty and happiness, safety and prosperity for their children, and scrap as far as they eye could see! They gathered their simple spears and tools, and clambered into the main hall of the Aquarium. There, Duke and his two brothers stood before them, and the chief addressed his people.

“You have seen the signs, brothers and sisters! We were meant to be here! We were meant to tame the ‘Forbidden Metal Forest of No Return!’” The old tales talk of fighting dragons and honorable duels with knights, but not of tribes and fishermen! Thus...”

He pulled from a scrapping-sack a plastic crown, possibly taken from a display in the slightly flooded lower areas of the building.

“... I name myself Duke! Duke of the erm... Barony! And When we take more stuff, I’ll make good people barons! And they can have their own castle, but also give me stuff. Not a huge amount of stuff, but enough stuff so that we can make more stuff. And uh...”

He looked to his confused brothers for reassurance or reminders, but saw none in their blank expressions.

“... yeah, that’s it I think. Back to work, my people! We have much to do! We’re gonna need way more food! And swords! And armour! And steeds!”

Turn 1

(2171)

The rediscovery of Chicago has brought travelers from across the continental States together. Many of these settlers claim The Mud City as their own. Though only time will tell who will rule.

Morgan’s Rifles

A rather eerily quiet year for the Regiment. Men begin to wonder how they can live off the land and eventually find their tin-coated ration packs make for good enough knives if cut the right way. (T2 Melee)

Some men could’ve sworn they saw someone walking around the eastern parts of the docks. It looked like they needed a shower. Badly.

The Republic of River-dale

A generous offer from their El Presidente. The men take the caps eagerly, as work is sparse. A total of 200 men begin their training within the walls of the River-Dale throughout the year. By the time winter comes around, some of the men actually hit their targets, even with their scrappily made pipe rifles.

The men find that simply putting a bigger barrel in a gun isn’t as easy as it sounds. More work will need to be done to create a heavy weapon to fit the needs of their soldiers.

Army of the Northwest

A groundbreaking discovery for the “Army” of the Northwest! Joseph’s engineering background seems to have done some good in the research department. (T1 Gunpowder Firearms)

The men sent to scout the local blocks soon find themselves between a rock and a hard place. Early on in their scouting, they find a nest of Mole Rats to the direct west of their current settlement. One estimates are in the thousands, though that is only from a hysterical recruit unprepared for the wasteland.

To their north, they find a clique of feral ghouls, their minds long since shattered from the test of time. To their east, nothing. Picked clean of any useful resources and devoid of life. The most interesting find comes late in the year, in the block directly south of them. Seemingly a campground with dozens of corpses, all of them bare and devoid of any kind of valuables, but clearly human and very fresh.

The Stone-Faces

The men sent north have nothing of interest to report on. Their scouting of the museum returns with reports of some nearly ancient machinery, long since past their time of usefulness to anyone.

The Sky Reavers

To the north, Isabel finds nothing. An open territory, ripe for the taking.

The west holds a different story. Some of the Reavers return with sightings of some kind of a military presence in the old industrial docks. Not many men, not even half as many rifles. A prime raiding target, perhaps?

Brotherhood of Steel Expedition

The scribes do their best to create something to show to the Paladins, but only end up with broken parts and something resembling a blow dart gun… How uncivilized.

ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL

The researchers use what knowledge they have to attempt to recreate what they find in pictures of old motorcycles. The framework is quite easy, merely getting an engine that small to effectively power the machine seems to be an issue.

Harry and his squad don’t seem to find anything out of the usual. The chain-link fences that usually surround the perimeter have been torn to shreds, letting not only wildlife but possibly any curious survivors freely roam in and out of the airfield.

From a quick survey, the airfield is somewhat barren. Planes that used to be airworthy are now nothing more than simple skeletons sitting next to the terminals, picked clean of any electronics and heavy metals. However, by some divine intervention, they do manage to find, although the fuselage rusted and worn away, a civilian-grade passenger plane. It doesn’t look airworthy, as parts of the tail and wings are missing, though the engines don’t seem to be in too bad of condition...

Old Chicago

The northern block is taken with ease. There were some rad-roaches, which gave a few of the lads some gnarly and potentially radioactive nibbles, but nothing serious. The southern block is a bit more hard-fought for. A small band of raiders, no larger than a couple of dozen, seemed to have made their home there. Upon seeing the large group of armed Pizza-boys coming down the street, they put up some resistance before being overwhelmed by the Chicagoans numbers. After a speedy getaway, they left behind a small stache of stolen goodies to pick from. (Both territories are taken, +2 S, +10 T1 Gunpowder Firearms,  -25 Population)

Molotovs; easy to make, not safe to drink. (T1 Explosives)

There is much work to be done to upgrade their current firearms, but at least they have a few hastily-drawn designs on some napkins they found at a local diner.

Goldman’s Caravan

Damien and his team stumble upon what seemed to be a ‘den’ of sorts for a small band of feral ghouls. If not for the keen eye of Damien, one of the men would have fallen right into the den. They return home, one of the men being a little more thankful for his life before heading to bed.

Research for a drastic improvement is far off. Although Sarahbeth has quite a background in science and studies, it is hard to improve what has already been near-perfected for thousands of years.

The Rust Baron

Wizzo pokes finger in wrong hole. Wizzo get shock. Wizzo stab shock-hole. Wizzo no like shock-holes now.

Brogwad finds himself in the grounds of what seemed to be an old outdoor aquarium. Many of the fish seem to have died long ago as the water is spoiled to an earthy green color with hundreds of small skeletons floating above the muck.

Duke would find himself far within the aquarium, and although not finding a large table to call his own, he would instead find a partially bombed-out section of the Aquarium that’s roof gave way to the sunlight and directly into one of the aquariums. An entire ecosystem, isolated on its own, although slightly irradiated as the Clown Fish have now turned purple among many other alterations from what the signs show these creatures looked like nearly two hundred years ago.

The Sky Reavers

Kronos sat in the old building he used as the ‘Bosses’ Place. “You said there were only a few?” He asked, the raider nodded. “They seemed to be squatters and only a few warriors. I hurried back to spread the news”

“Excellent, I know a few of us have been itching for a fight. Go find Rackam and tell him to gather the boys.” he would stand. “We have some slaves that need to be told their place.”

Rackam would gather many men, some would remain behind or were told to. Can’t leave home undefended!

Kronos along with Rackam, his favored warrior lieutenant would lead a raiding warband of 160 Warriors to attack the small presence their scouts had located earlier. There will be tons of loot! (MOD)

Many of the men that remain behind take the opportunity to the scrap and cobble together makeshift armor for themselves. (1M, 60 Scrap Armor)

Ratchet takes it upon himself to work towards ensuring his fellow Reavers are better armed, can’t make a living selling arms and armor if they all end up dead. (1R, Melee T2, 5 Total)

Some of the boys have taken to putting together a more...deadly means of combat. Burning folks is cool and all but explosions are so much more manly. (2R, Can Grenades.)

Current Residing leader: Senior Paladin Blackburn.

With the block almost full, new whereabouts to expand are looked into. Wrigley field might be a good location for an actual FOB to run operations out of. Scouts are dispatched west to observe what lays in the once great baseball field.

As for the very disappointing performance from the senior scribe and his scribes, he is put on notice. One more atrocious failure like that and he will not only lose his position, but he’ll also be on janitorial duty for the next 6 months. Then possible reclamation of his old position will be allowed if and only if Senior Paladin Blackburn thinks he has atoned for his mistakes.

The scribes know the consequences for failure, especially the senior scribe. But Senior Paladin Blackburn is willing to give them another chance to show more effort. (10 R)

The block is growing quite full. The block north is examined, and the western block is  observed by a couple forward observers. (mod)

A couple trade shops are built in the block and are to be run by the quartermaster and his assistants when not on duty. (-500 caps)

The training of all the population takes place. No brother or sister will go untrained and unprepared for the horrors of the wasteland. ( 5,000 caps)
