Turn 4

(2174)

So many bits and pieces to put back together. What’ll be the end result of all this?

Ghostly figures wander the west. Any sign of light sends them scrambling for the shadows, their only common factor between them being a pair of dim neon-green dots reflecting back at whoever spots them.

Western Brotherhood Expedition

The beast is put down, but at what cost?

The men north complete their task, though with losses aplenty. (Discord)

The scribes find some old tin cans and some firecrackers. Primitive, obviously, but maybe they’re on the right path...

More wasters. The same numbers trickle in early in the year, but near the end of the year, a steady populace begins to stroll down the coastline towards the Brotherhood expedition, some now begging and seeking refuge or treatment for their wounds and empty bellies.

The Stone-Faces

More of the same as last time. All that seems to be here is old machinery, with very little to actually pick from. Though one of the Stone-Faces seemingly found quite the prize. Far below in the basement of the museum stands a heavy-set metal door, seemingly untouched since the bombs dropped.

The Sky Reavers

Can grenades are a great idea, given their already growing surplus of empty cans and seemingly rampant growth of explosive materials in the camp?

The men come to the south, only to find that the area was seemingly cleared already. Several dead animals lay around, but the land is up for grabs.

The Republic of Riverdale

Twenty-five men go out, twenty-four return. Odd seeing as everyone could’ve sworn they had everyone with them. Upon retracing their steps, they can only find a spare rifle. (-1 Population)

The scouts report back with some troubling news; the raiders that were described to them by Morgan’s Rifles are seemingly expanding to their south.

Research goes steadily, but no breakthroughs are made. Strapping pieces of tanned leather does some good for the Riverdalians fashion, but making it properly protect the person wearing it is still an issue.

Trade deal with Morgan. (+250 C)

Immigration. (+11 Advanced Population)

Ronto Ratmen

The Ratking finds some lads and gets some costly loot.

The boys that venture around the area seem to find a few stragglers. A few beg for their lives. They shall keep their lives but in SHACKLES! (+10 Civ Population)

Clubbing is quite a primitive way of killing things. Why not… club things from afar? With a slingshot!

ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL

Machine Guns would be a great help for the men of the Rock. Charles seemingly knows this and works day and night to try to make something presentable, unfortunately, he’s just not close enough once he gets to the end of the year. (+1 R)

The men patrolling the borders of the Airport begin filing in some troubling reports. The encampment is seemingly being stalked by someone, the number of scouts is unknown, however.

CHICAGO ENGINEERS UNION

The men find… something resembling a train. After some inspection, they find it is in no working condition without some major repairs. The side paneling is gone and scrapped, the transmission is almost totally destroyed, and several of the cars are dislodged from the track and laying against the sidewall of the tunnels.

Training goes well.

Heavy firearms are easily brought to the production lines, and soon enough to the tunnels of Chicago.

The men just can’t figure it out what exactly you do with a rag, a lighter, and a bottle of alcohol. It’s just a mystery.

Morgan’s Rifles

The men easily clear the area with their handy dandy rifles. No wildlife seems to bother them any longer.

Trade agreement. (+300 C)

Immigration treaty with the River-Dale. (+50 Civilized Population)

The Rust Barony

Wizzo’s magic fizzles away with no blessing from the spirits this year. What’s the point of a magic-man who has no magic...

Brogwad’s journeys are still quite far off. Although he wasn’t able to find the source of these squiggles, he was able to find something else. Set in what remains of the park to their north resides an encampment, seemingly inhabited by several hundred men and women.

To the south, Duke Duke stakes his claim on an area. It seemed he wasn’t quite watching where he was walking as he fell into a PIT OF DESPAIR! Upon closer inspection, this pit seems to go on forever. Duke Duke deems it worthy of an adventure, but many more feet-men would be needed to journey its vastness.

Army of the Northwest

It seems their push to the north and onto the highway has angered… someone. (Discord)

The men of the Northwest begin to cycle in some reports to their higher-ups of sightings of someone, or something venturing around the perimeter of their grounds. Whenever they approach to inspect, there’s nothing. Some men even report disappearances of the inexperienced soldiers within their squads after sentry duty. (-4 Population)

Task Force Bradley sweeps through the streets of Chicago, clearing out the neighborhoods west of the Airfield.

The Rock - what the Rock Islanders had come to regard their operational headquarters. Although, a long shot away from the actual Rock Island from which their names derives, the Rock had finally begun to feel like home. Home or not, someone was trespassing on their territory. Reports had recently trickled in that just beyond the perimeter, a number of sentries had spotted movement, shifting around in the shadows, stalking the men of the Rock.

Initially, they were dismissed as just mere Scavs. But as more and more men reaffirmed these claims, perhaps it wasn’t the wasteland deliria that had initially been suspected. That left General MacArthur in a tough situation. Indeed, he sought to be more proactive. He wanted to root out the issue before it festered, dealing with it before it could ever truly threaten the Rock.

To claim as much of salvageable daylight as possible, a sortie was organized as the crack of dawn. They were to secure more of the perimeter around the Airfield. The target of this year’s operations would come in the western block. Some 60 men depart to sweep these new grounds with their wits about them.

For now, the men of the Rock hunker down - ready to move on a moment’s notice.

Current Residing leader: Senior Paladin Blackburn.

Walls, towers, sandbags, all of these things have something in common. Security. Wrigley field now being under control will serve as a sizeable base of operation, yet it needs to be cleaned and repaired substantially. Another problem lies with the refugees flooding through the blocks. Hopefully they could be of use to us, otherwise I have no clue what shall be done with them.

Wrigley field is in need of cleaning and repairs. First we will strip the stadium of any materials for later repair, and clean up the collapsed areas for repair. (-8,000 caps.)

On the wrigley block, walls are put up, sentries are assigned and there will always be at least one patrol patrolling. (-1500 caps, 3 defenses.) On top of that, a system of alarms are set up in each of the blocks that will sound if any trouble arises.

Continued work on the “Can Grenade.” (4 R + 4 R already invested.)

More rifles are produced by the knights. ((T3) 3m, 1E.)

All the refugees are rounded up and given a test of sorts. Those that pass said test are allowed to stay and given initiate status. Those that fail are ordered to leave. If they do not comply with the orders they are to be disposed of. If the refugees would like to set up a camp to the north two blocks, the Paladins would gladly assist and possible further assistance would be provided.

Morgan’s Rifles

Teams of Republican troops move throughout their newly won sector, celebrating. Though they mourned the death of the 3 Riflemen, victory had been achieved. Morgan had personally led his troops on the field. In a vicious firefight, their tactics and skill proved superior yet again. And the growing amount of Reaver corpses in the mass open pit attested to it. And with it came the spoils of war. The troops were combat tested, and ready for more. As the Riflemen consolidate their new gains, Morgan is already moving on.

With the victory under their belt, the River-Dale and Riflemen units shift their attention back to the next major objective. With all bridges secure, the Northeast along the river and their frontier was a glaring issue. And so a concentrated push is made this [turn] to secure the ‘East Side’.

Faction Name: Ronto Ratmen

With the cost of loot being blood the Ratking takes claim on the Heavy laser weapon, scraping the rest into gear for the boys. But the raid would have been a huge success had the boys carried some of those fancy fire bottles, while the throwing and burning seemed simple none of the Ratmen actually knew what was in those bottles. Bone-Neck the brightest of the Ratmen could make most chems known to the boys, he should be able to figure out the riddle of the fire bottles.

The Stone-Faces

Image result for native american concept art

News of the iron chamber which lay beneath the rubble and steel skeleton of the museum spread quickly among the violent tribesmen; tales ranging from trapped demons to entombed riches were told often to assuage their intense fear of the unknown. Yet the holiest of the tribe remained fascinated by his find, scribes and shamans clamored to catch a glimpse of the antique shape. An item of intense religious value due to it’s age and wisdom.

Back at the Phoenix Garden, Feenix prepares his raiding party for it’s second major expedition. His group will depart from the gardens to head further north, exploring the unknown land and scavenging for gifts from the stone trees.

The Rust Barony

“A sign! A sign!” The tribesmen whooped and screamed in grand cacophony. They pointed and bellowed down the great hole, shaking their spears and performing war-dances to intimidate it. The hole, to its credit, didn’t appear phased by the frightful displays of the feetmen. After all, it was just a hole.

Duke Duke sat at its edge, face twisted in contemplation--was a great hole worthy of a quest? He looked to his Shaman Wizzo, who donned his Brahman-headdress and breathed deep the scents of spirit-smoke to enhance his wisdom.

“Many dangers sleep in this despairing pit, Duke of Dukes. The sparky spirits warn of death, and the sparky spirits are never wrong...”

“Your spirits always warn of death, Wizzo. How can you be so sure this time?”

Wizzo pulled from his loincloth a strange spirit-box, that contained a sparky hole. The Shaman performed a short incantation, and stuck his finger in the hole, withdrawing it just as fast with a yelp.

“A sign! They have spoken!” He yelled, billowing spirit-smoke from his mouth and nose. “Perils rest in the great pit! Shall you quest in it, Duke of Dukes?”

Duke Duke rested his chin on his hand, and shrugged. “I guess it could be somewhat chivalrous... but would there be a dragon in a hole? Dragons live in mountains, sleeping on great piles of fish and comely womenfolk.”

“Ah, but--“ began Wizzo with a triumphant grin. “A pit is a reverse-mountain! At its bottom would surely be a reverse-dragon!”

“What would the reverse of a dragon living in the ground be?” Mused Duke Duke. “A worm?”

“Nay, most knightly one!” Barked Wizzo as he joined the other warriors screaming at the hole. “A Wyrm!”

“A sign! A sign!” Roared Duke Duke.

CHICAGO ENGINEERS UNION

-The remnants of a mighty vessel indeed... The Locomotive Gods are honoured greatly – the Chief Engineer commands the destroyed machine be raised up on blocks, and that there be an effort to re-purpose her. Faulty machinery and other such dross is stripped away and examined, to see how easy it would be to repair, while and examination of the engine goes underway, to see what still works. Paul Hughes, a rather talented engineer, takes charge of the process. (4 Intelligence, 2 Perception) [MOD]

-Meanwhile, the ruined carriages provide an ample source of material, and the Chief Engineer orders them scrapped. [MOD]

-Jack Aubrey (2 Intelligence, 3 Perception, 1 Luck) leads a party of 9 other Trained men, dressed in T1 Power Armour, into the block directly to the east of the CEU HQ. [MOD]

-CEU research this year goes into expanding the yield of metal production facilities. (6R) [MOD]

Turn 5

(2175)

The sounds of war; thunderous tremors, cries of sorrow, the snap of a bullet.

The factions around the downtown area of the Mud City begin to hear more commotion coming from the heart of the city. Each day it grows more intense; explosions, gunfire, and hums of revving engines.

ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL

Research goes well for the men of the Rock. Some of them seem to have at least some experience with fashioning some old fashioned molotovs. But mass-producing them may be an issue.

The men find little resistance in their newly acquired block. The bikes are not needed, at least for this expansion.

A dignitary is sent to the northwest, returning with news that the Caravan may be open to negotiations. (Cleared to talk to Sneaky)

Brotherhood of Steel Expedition

The can grenades come along swimmingly. By the end of the year they have not only a working prototype, but one that can be produced. (T2 Explosives)

Some of these men and women seem to be at least slightly capable. Some of them explain their backgrounds as being from a local vault within Chicago or being descendants of those that lived there. The ones that are denied put up some resistance, though, after some ‘negotiation’ from the end of a laser rifle, they disperse and head north. (+21 Advanced Pop)

Wrigley field is somewhat cleaned up. The left over seats are taken out to make it easier to move around, but there is still much work to do to make it into a fortress.

The Republic of Riverdale

A research agreement they shall have.

The Riverdalians do well with their new armor, looking both fashionable and being well protected. Each piece is guaranteed to be “Wahlberg Approved”. (T2 Armor)

Morgan’s Rifles

The men encounter the Reavers once again as they expand, but they are quickly dispatched.

The artillery research is far off from anything that would be considered a WMD, but in these times a large slingshot could be considered a WMD… (T1 Artillery)

Heavy firearms are a welcome addition. Seeing their brethren in the Riverdale using them to dispatch the Reavers was reason enough to improve their own.

Ronto Ratmen

Molotovs make tummy hurty, but they also make other people burny. (T1 Explosives)

The men find themselves lower in numbers coming back from their patrols. Only a few have disappeared, however. (-5 Raider population)

It seems they have hit the jackpot, or rather the jackpot hit them. From the south, several hundred weary and disheveled looking settlers wander upon the Ratmen’s warren and are summarily rounded up and put to work. (+280 Civ population)

Army of the Northwest

The men return with reports of sightings of multiple ‘disorganized’ camps to their direct east, as well as their northeast. The northern block to their expansion is seemingly barren, though several patrols of raiders would’ve been reported.

Joseph finds himself with a VERY capable rifle by the end of the year, truly a masterpiece to spread the good will of the lord democracy. (T2 Gunpowder firearms)

With the recent breakthrough of the T2 firearms, making a lesser version of them but just bigger is all too easy for Joseph. (T1 Gunpowder heavy weapons)

The Stone-Faces

The tribe does well with not blowing themselves up, but as for actually making something that blows up their target is another thing entirely.

Blood-Mother finds little to worry about as they occupy the territory.

Stone-Father finds that the door is impenetrable by both conventional and spiritual means. It would require much more willpower and much more technology to begin to break through this door.

The Headsman finds little else around them, it seems they have free reign over the territory.

The Sky Reavers

The grenades are a great idea, so great that the focused minds of the Reavers find a way to create them by the end of the year. (T2 Explosives)

The Rust Barony

The new block is secured with little troubles for the Feetmen. Though they do seem to find some traces of others that had been there before. Throughout the block are large camps that have been seemingly abandoned.

Wizzo is chief of the Wisdom. His mighty thinking hut brews and stirs as new engines of carrying on Duke Duke’s divine will begin to flourish in his mind. (+3 R)

Not the most civilized of approaches, but they continue to approach nonetheless. (Discord)

Duke Duke requires many training sessions to get any bigger, but the drive of impressing the tribeswomen is reason enough. (+1 Strength, +1 Agility)

CHICAGO ENGINEERS UNION

Hughes determines that the entire engine section of the locomotive is to be refurbished and replaced for it to begin working again. Along with the already damaged suspension and rail system.

The carriages are a great find for the Union, bringing forth many extra materials at the cost of more locomotive cars. (+10 M)

Chaos is the only word to describe the block to the east. Almost as soon as the men cross the bridge that leads to the eastern block, they come under fire from several rooftops of low buildings, and even from the over-city above. It is clear that they are not welcomed here. (-1 Population, -1 T1 Power Armor)

Finding any kind of improvement to the already efficient scrap yards is a stretch. The use of machinery is needed; machinery that they have neither the technology nor the fathomable designs for.

Current Residing leader: Senior Paladin Blackburn.

Nothing of note happens this year. More materials must be gathered, and more work must be done. Senior scribe Hayes has looked over the assignment I’ve given him and he seems pleased. The man is smarter than anyone can imagine, quite honestly it’s terrifying. Meanwhile the new initiates appear to have promising futures. Most are young and full of vigor. The rest of the rabble were wasters and outcasts, no good to us by any means. The best they can hope for in the harsh wastes is a quick death.

The scribes are assigned a mighty task, the creation of Combat armor. Power armor is a luxury only the Paladins are provided. The Knights will need something more than fatigues if they wish to take a more active role in supporting operations. Senior Scribe Hayes will be in charge of the project but he will be assisted by Journeyman scribe Chase. (6 R, 11 intelligence and 11 intelligence.)

The Holy Nation

Year 2075

———————————————————

And so the state within the humble colony had begun to deteriorate throughout the past years. With the coming of Reverend Issac Hayes, and his holy text, only strife had followed. Indeed, and with what strange rapidity the Reverend’s teachings had stuck into the minds of the fair citizens. Nothing was more remarkable than the ability of the faith to take hold, burrowing into the mind like a parasite, and such, its sole concern. Now the spread of the faith had greatly- fain tremendously distrubed the General. In his age, his mind had betrayed him. Where once swift action would’ve been taken, only hesitation prevailed- until of late. The General’s hand, finally swayed by the incessant bickering of his subordinates, had made an outrageous decision. The practitioners of the faith were to be expelled, cast from the perimeter, to settle anew.

Before the old schoolhouse, its form renewed, though its walls still discolored by nuclear blasts and decades of decay, the crowd gathered. Bearded men, clad in white, red, orange, and purple colored garments, stood assembled before the doors, of which was emblazed by the army’s seal. At the head of the unruly throng, stood the Zealots and Magistrates, named by the faithful and led by Issac Hayes. The amalgamation had appeared outside the site of colonial administration for no less than stated previously, to overturn the most outrageous decision in an act of divinely inspired rage.

Now the General Whitefield, an intelligent man, knew his hesitation had failed him. The pious were too numerous, and the loyal too few. Even the Colonel Kingston had abandoned the Generals’ side, killed within the colony, or joined with those who opposed him. His options dwindled, perhaps 30 men remained loyal- no more. He stood little chance of resisting, instead the General would surrender to the faithful, not another drop of colonial blood spilled.

The heavy doors of the school slid open, to a colony, which now if observed by an inhabitant of only half a decade ago would be unrecognizable. No longer did the red-white-blue eagles of the army crack in the Mud City’s wind, replaced by holy iconography. The General stepped outwards from within the building’s protection, his men lying their arms down beside their feet. It was to this scene that the most pious magistrate, Issac Hayes, was greeted with as the throng parted before him. The magistrate was clad as impeccably as was stated earlier, his white attire without mark, decorated with threads of gold of red. Behind Isaac, two followed, an acolyte known as Jacob Williams, and in close companionship with him, the Zealot, Amos Troyer.

“What have we here!” cried the good acolyte, looking with surprise at the figure of the General before him. “I have never seen the like, the sinner hath come forth. I profess, I had never believed the proud Whitefield would come before the faithful, his arms surrendered!” “Ay, Indeed” The Zealot Amos retorted “I was prepared to water the grounds of Providence with sinners’ blood!” “Hold thine tongues, children of the Flame, the sinner has yet to speak his purpose! What sayest thou, o’ General.” The magistrate Issac said, in a calming tone.

Whitefield, a proud man, would not entertain whom he saw as traitors in speech. He would stand silent, akin to a statue, tucking his hand into his coat. At this a small smile graced Issac’s lips. His hands folded behind his coat until he spoke once more. “Too proud then, eh? Take him, the General will repent, we are patient..”

----------

The heretic prisoner, arguably not even a real person, stood in chains upon the roof of the building, overlooking the highway, overlooking the block that had just been lost by the Holy Nation. Pillars of smoke rose on the horizon, hallowed ground, tread upon..

In front of him, a wooden pole mounted on the roof. He was pushed forward, his garments striped, pressed against the pole. A final time, he was asked to repent by a stone faced Acolyte, a final time the heretic denied and spat in his captor’s face. Then, the nails were produced, the hammer began to swing, screams rang out. It could not become worse than this, surely..

The two soldiers brought forward a small vat, hastily opened it, and began to collect the substance from within in a large spoon. Confusion. Then they began to smear it all over the prisoners’ exposed flesh. As they finished the two guards joked, the man caught only a quick line was caught “The last was weak, only nine days, I give this one eighteen” “Ay, he’ll be out here for a while.”

Indeed, he was there for a while. The poor soul, in view of his comrades spent the next twelve days festering in the hot chicago sun, unable to move. It wasn't until the end of the first day the torture became clear to him. The hot sun beat down, the insects flocked to the sweet sweet honey. The man festered and burnt as the small creatures devoured him alive, slowly.. The more days passed, the more insects arrived. His only human contact was a daily visit, when an acolyte would force the man to drink a quantity of milk. It wasn't until the twelfth day, when one of his comrades eventually felt sorry for the husk that the man was reduced to, and put a bullet in between his eyes. It didn't matter, the man suffered thoroughly and the message was sent to the heretic filth

The General briefs the men of the Rock, prior to their deployment.

Arrayed on the tarmac, was the pride of the Rock Island Arsenal. 1st Infantry Battalion Combat Team. Numbering slightly over 200 men, they were a shadow of pre-War army formations. Nevertheless, they stood at attention, dignified, in their Olive Green BDU’s. There was an immense disparity in the equipment wielded by infantry. Some men had been afforded rudimentary plate armor and decently passable rifles. While the new draftees had only been handed pipe rifles - liable to frequent malfunction and jamming and slacks. For now, it’ll have to make do, the General always assured himself. Things will surely get better.

… But in order for things to get better, the Rock would need resources… manpower… perhaps at the cost of other Wastelanders. General MacArthur strided the line of soldiers during his inspection - each motionless, eyes front and chin slightly raised. He’d enforced a strict grooming standard. The men were all clean shaven, with their uniforms washed. While they served within his ‘Army’, they were expected to maintain a professional decorum. … Implying they had a life outside the Army. The term of enlistment was some 10 or 15 years, depending on whether or not they had received a commission. The Army was the only life many of these men had known. In the scheme of things, it wasn’t too bad. Frequently, men would be rotated out from frontline service to return to Midway on leave. Given the small nature of their theater of operations - within the ruins of Chicago, they were able to have a wife and kids, whom they could visit frequently, while serving the Rock.

The tips of their rifles bristled in the cool morning air. With the miniscule nature of their outfit and having all emerged from the Vault, the General knew many if not most, of these men personally. Thus, he was not keen on sending them headfirst into a suicide mission. They were like sons to him - to whom he was directly responsible. And like the loving father to which they would look up to, he set the golden standard. Yet, he would not allow his emotions to prevent him from securing the Rock’s position in Chicago. Indeed, they were not standing on the tarmac for no reason today. They would perhaps get to see their real first taste of combat for the first time.

“Men, today we embark upon a perilous journey. We know not what lay beyond the boundaries of our perimeter fence. But know that the Wastelander may appear similar to you - though trust no scoundrel on these streets.. They be ruthless, cutthroat, willing to go to extreme and brutal lengths to get their way. Show them no remorse, and pay back every loss tenfold. Let us secure our destiny in the Mud City and let God judge it righteous.”
