STEEL HORIZON

1882

qLPHYc3.png

And so it came to pass, after a decade of the foulest violence possibly imaginable, that peace finally returned to the lives of men. Widows and mothers wept for their sons and husbands, for many did not return, and those who did would never truly be the same again. Worse, perhaps, is the fact that peace has not yet been attained in this bitter and broken world. Civil wars rage ever onwards, crippling even the mightiest of civilisations, and ruthless Sky Pirates have taken to the air to hunt freighters, now that the great fleets have exhausted themselves.

War continues to be a painful and constant threat, particularly in the far south, where the Klendari Sultan looks spitefully towards his nearest neighbor, his fury at their conquest of Port Carnelian still burning bright. The Carnelian Sultan has much to worry about, in fact, for there are rumours of troops concentrating along the Klendari border. 3 Corps are reported so far, and it is said that General Refik Pasha has raised the flag of his 4th Army in the border town of Ankeyf. Between the two rivals lies the all important strategic line of Kesun. Whether the Kesun Line will be a wall or a gate remains to be seen, however.

Worse still is the civil war in the Anaraein Confederacy. The rigors of the Great War created a terrible schism in the Confederacy, and a full blown conflict has erupted between the Communists and the Confederates. In the West, the fighting is slow and bitter, reminiscent of the past decade. In the East, however, General Shule Corvin has led his XII Corps into a stunning series of victories over the local Red Army forces, and the East has begun to finally stabilise under the control of the Confederates - this has created a major problem for the Grand Principality of Cumberland, as long lines of routed Communist Party forces stream over the border.

The republics of the Mid-Continent are faced with a different threat. The Commonwealth of Valdek and her fellows - the Free Provinces and the Republic of Volta-Solvan - are faced with an ever growing and menacing issue in the form of the Tsornluft Pirates, who launch constant and ceaseless attacks against air trade, causing outrage among their Parliaments and Senates, who demand action be taken against the brigands.

In the North, the United Socialist Pact border many of their hated bourgeoise foes, but most fearsome of all is the Tsardom of Pozharin, ruled by Tsar Laurent VI. Along their long shared border, the Imperial Pozharin Army is well dug in, and a long standoff continues between the Communist border forces opposite. While the USP have found their bitterest rival, the Grand Duchy of Praha may have found their most dedicated ally, for the Tsardom is an ancient bastion of monarchical authority and power.

The Carnelian Sultanate

Long a bastion of trade and wealth, the Carnelian Sultan played his role in the Great War with glee, and it is now that he may pay for it. The old alliances are broken, and Carnelian gains are threatened now by a vengeful Esina III, the Klendari Sultan. Difficult choices must be made to ensure the survival of Mehmet IV’s kingdom, but not all is dark, for the Carnelian Sultanate is not a weak or impoverished land, and her people will stand nobly behind their Sultan, lest their honour be spat upon.
POI: The Carnelian Beach

The Carnelian Beach is over seven miles of wide, flat and sandy beach. A stunning sight to behold, it is unfortunately rather indefensible, providing a perfect landing zone for any determined invader.

POI: The Kesun Line - East of your Borders

One of the South’s few remaining permanent defensive lines, the Kesun Line was built in reinforced concrete along a series of hills, ridges and slopes between Carnelian and Klendari territory. Over the course of the Great War, countless tens of thousands lost their lives on both sides, as wave after wave of troops launched attacks against the position.

The Commonwealth of Valdek

Valdenian naval power - long a point of patriotic fervor for the nation - has been utterly humiliated in the last few years by the increasing savagery of Sky Piracy. The Valdenians are not alone in this plight, and they may find strong allies on their borders, to aid the war to make air trade safe once again.

POI: Fort Pracht

An enormous mountain complex, with multiple layers of defense, dozens of chokepoints, hidden airship docks, massive storage rooms, miles worth of tunnels and bunkers and advantageous artillery positions, Fort Pracht was originally designed as a government retreat, but swiftly became converted into the largest Air Fleet Headquarters in the world.

United Socialist Pact

The USP, through years of conflict and reform, have easily one of the most experienced armies in the field - their revolution provided plenty of opportunity for skill and practice to their officer corps, and the Red Army has made every use of that. And they will need it, for on all sides the USP faces threats against their very existence - but none greater than the Tsardom of Pozharin, who lurk menacingly to the West.

POI: The Father

A major railroad bridge, the Father is an irreplaceable part of the railway lines connecting the North of the Continent to the South - important to trade and military supply, the Father pumps lifeblood into the nation that holds it.

The Republic of Emmeria

The Republic is a land of opportunity - and they are one of the few nations without the threat of brutal conflict hovering over their heads like the hand of death. A well educated nation, the Republic will doubtlessly be a source of many technological advances in the coming years.

POI: The Emmer Valley

In days past, there were many sources of volcanic activity in this region - as those fiery peaks became inactive, much of the ash lay and rotted in the valley below. With a bountiful supply of crystal clear, mountain water, the Emmer Valley is a major breadbasket, providing rich harvests without fail.

+1% pop growth

The Gwangnan Dominion

The Gwangnan Navy! With some of the most talented officers in the world in its service, the Gwangnan Navy is a force to behold. Were it not for the fact that it lay, rotting, in its docks over a chronic Vitraium shortage in the Dominion. Still, the Dominion will no doubt be swift in overcoming her supply problems, for though the Great War damaged her Vitramite industries, she has a plentiful supply of the ore.

POI: Ground-to-Air Battery

One of the few remaining ground-to-air batteries left over from the Great War, the Gwangnan Battery features a large concrete bunker, and three triple turreted 25 inch guns, designed to target dreadnoughts high in the sky.

The Grand Duchy of Praha

Praha is a nation that fortune has smiled upon. Her armed forces are strong, her borders secure and her neighbours focused on other, more pressing threats. With the mighty PRAC at his back, the Grand Duke will doubtlessly find himself in a position to turn the wheel of history, though how he does it is yet to be seen.

POI: The Northern Rail Depot

A major hub of northern trade and rail supply, the Northern Rail Depot is an instrumental part of the Trans-Continental Railroad.

+5000G per turn

The Grand Principality of Cumberland

The Grand Principality of Cumberland is in a position of relative security - with the Anaraeins in bitter civil conflict, Cumberland’s greatest threat comes in the form Communist Party rebels, routed in the recent battles in the East. With the Great War over, and the world still teetering on the brink of chaos, the Grand Prince Maximillian will have to struggle to prevent his nation slipping into anarchy.

POI: The Mouth

The Mouth is a large bay, leading into the heartlands of Cumberland. The most notable features of the bay are the two giant, 25 inch ground to air batteries, consisting of four double turreted guns on each headland, and the Vitramite forged boom chains, which draw tight across the bay and prevent enemy naval access.

The Karakhwa

The Karakhwa have long had tense and turbulent relations with their northern neighbours - but perhaps their newly gained independence will temper such terse feeling? Only Yotal truly knows how the world of men will change, and all his devoted Braves can do is worship him with their wind pipes, and defend their honour with vigor.

UNITED SOCIALIST PACT

“Equality comes from shared burdens! Fight and work with your brothers and sisters today!”

Risyetz – Capital Metropolis of the United Socialist Pact

“Great Leader. It is time for your speech.” the adjutant said to Maksim who was eyeing his uniform in the mirror. Fastening his tie, a tuck on each sleeve and the leader of the United Socialist Pact (USP) was ready to give his speech. Today he had the masses to convince and not his fellow comrades. For they needed the aid of the people, the strength of the small, but of the many. There was war to be had, as the revolution was in danger yet again. As it has been for the past years. To last, you must force. And if you force, some have to pay the price. Who would be better to pay the price than the oppressors that followed the false and corrupt ideals of monarchy of capitalism? That was exactly what Maksim would tell the people and he knew they would love him for it, for he was one who stood up against the regime of old and brought change. Freedom. And most of all, equality.

And thus he stepped out on the balcony and opened with the word: “Comrades!”

The assault on the Tzarist Regime to the West begins. They must not dawdle, and free the people.

Diplomatic outreach to the surrounding nations, inquiring for the possibilities of limited trade (as long as it’s equal), as well as gathering information about them. The Great Leader is curious as to whom might be yet enlightened with the true path for the future.

The Party pursues the research of an improved fighter craft that offers more agility and speed than the previous outdated version from the Great War. It is important, that for the current lack of airships, the skies of the USP should remain watched over. (1 R slot)

At the same time on the ground, the General Ramudan Sedivic orders to development of an armored tractor, a vehicle with a powerful engine, that is capable of breaking through lines and trenches known from the Great War, as well as offer fire support and ample cover for infantry that is to conduct the effective push across No-Man’s-Land. The Northern Frontier, August, 1882

General Moore walked along the hastily dug mountain trenchline. The gravel and rocks crunching beneath his boots. The air still stunk of the communists who had occupied the position hours earlier. Craters from the preliminary bombardment still smoked, and the fallen soldiers were in the process of being buried by many around him. The wind howled above him, whispering chilling words into the mens’ ears. Occasionally, one of the howitzers rang out, bringing support to some battle off in the hills. Towards him, one of his junior officers approached. Stopping to give a brief salute before he spoke.

“General Moore, you’ve finally arrived.” The officer fumbled as he spoke, unfurling a map onto a nearby rock. “We’ve just received reports. The last of the Communist X rifles surrendered a few miles northeast our position. Though the remnants of the III Infantry has continued to resist” He gestured to the map with his finger, dragging it across the many hills towards the north. “... Here.” The man paused, looking his commander before picking up on his words. “But it’s of no concern, Sir, reports indicate good progress. They’ll be rooted out before the week’s end.”

The General studied the map for a few brief seconds. “Good, Major General Brown’s formations have reported similar progress. It seems the last of this cursed insurrection will finally be put down. Confined to the highlands, and pressed against Fort Pracht, it will be only a matter months- weeks even until they surrender in full.. Excellent work, Colonel, I’ll have these advances reported to the General Staff shortly…”

The Civil War finishes, The War on Piracy begins

In the wake of the Civil War, and the absence of the White Fleet, piracy is on the rise. To the west of the Commonwealth, and over its plentiful airspace, emboldened Tsornloft pirates has begun to ravage not only the Commonwealth’s many trade routes, but the routes of many others. In opposition to the pirate efforts, the Congress has ordered Grand Admiral Grant Weber and the White Fleet to crack down on the blaring issue, despite the severe lack of Vitramite fuel for the Fleet’s vessels.

As such, a delegations are dispatched to the following nations, The Republic of Volta-Solvan, The Free Provinces, The Gwangnan Dominion, The Grand Duchy of Praharavka, The Grand Principality of Cumberland, The Klendari Sultanate, as well as the numerous smaller states,  inviting them to participate in the War on Piracy. In the meantime, Admiral Weber’s fleets and air wings maintain a protective stance on Valdenian trade and airspace, not yet numerous nor supplied enough to act offensively against the pirates.

GRAND DUCHY OF PRAHA

“There comes a time in which every man must decide…”

What would otherwise be a quiet day in the Praharavkan countryside, soon was interrupted. What were once clear, blue skies, gave way, as the silhouette of a ship hole effortlessly parted through the clouds. Early morning, woken by the soft droning of the Vitraium engines, people took to the streets below and gawked wide-eyed upwards. One of the fabled airships of Praharavkan Royal Air Corps. A most unusual appearance, as the PRAC fleet vessels had served no purpose since the Great War - relegated to patrol duties far from view. Some had even begun to gather dust in port, seeing as the Royal Budget could no longer afford their maintenance. Why should they? Praha was under no threat… yet.

Indeed the voyage of this vessel was far out of the ordinary. For now they neared the disputed lands between Praha, Gwangnan, and Pozharin. For what purpose?

Upon the ship’s deck, a regally clad figure stood upon the foredeck. He leaned upon the rails as the ship cut through the skies. Surrounding him were several advisors and guards. He paid them no mind, relishing in the opportunity to command the skies. Such a technological feat - being able to construct craft capable of flight. Truly, human innovation and ingenuity knew no bounds. But, what came next? He wondered.

What came next, of course, was the journey and mission set forth by his father, the Grand Duke. He had had his moment, stepping away from the rail and ready to receive status reports. As he did so, a lanky runner came down the bridge, practically tripping his own laces as he stumbled across the deck, short of breath. “Your Highness. We’re nearing the demilitarized zone.”

“We’ve made good time then.”

“Your orders, sir?”

“Full steam ahead, take us through.”

“Sir, what if they mistake our intentions and fire upon us?”

“Have a little faith.” he told the boy, flicking his attention midships where what appeared to be a white carpet lay strapped down to the deck. To another attendant he said, “Fly the banners of truce.” And at his command, immense white tarps were unfurled and cast off the side of the hull, picked up by the wind, and trailing with Airship.

RESEARCH (8 Education)

  • Slot 1: Improved Machine Gun Reliability - Whether or not your weapon jams or overheats is a life or death scenario. Thus it is crucial that measures are taken to improve the odds that a continuous stream of suppressive fire can be laid!

  • Slot 2: Armored Brigades - Tanks! Much of the nations of the Great War applied Armored Vehicles to great effect, smashing aside futile resistance imperviously! We must look to emulate these tactics to survive in this modern day and age.

  • Slot 3: Dreadnoughts - The flaws and limitations of the pre-dreadnought have become more and more apparent as the years pass. Drastic measures will need to be taken to ensure the protection and mobility of these enormous, floating gun batteries. Designs are drawn up for a modernized battleship.

  • Slot 4: Aircraft Carriers - The introduction of the aeroplane will forever change modern combat. Thus, we must be able to bring as many to bear as possible in as efficient a manner as possible. Perhaps we shall remove the top deck of a Heavy Cruiser and replace it with an airstrip?

The Carnelian Sultanate

Mehmet, crown prince of the Carnelian Sultanate, minister of reconstruction and governor of Sard, paced the length of his father’s cabin. In his hand was the fateful dispatch, news from the east that nearly guaranteed war.

“If we can just take the lines before they do...maybe we can hold them.”

“We’ve done all we can for today. Calm down.” The Sultan was an elderly and rotund figure, lounging at his desk at the far end of the room. “Esina is many things, but not invincible. We beat him once, we’ll do it again.”

Young Mehmet tossed the dispatch aside. “I’d be a lot calmer if I was there. You really expect Pashik to do the job?”

“I do. I trust him, and you can’t be everywhere at once.” The elder Mehmet grinned.

The prince frowned. “Abdul can take over Sard. Send me where I can do some good, for God’s sake.” He looked at his father expectantly, barely flinching when the airship shuddered.

“I would sooner appoint a donkey than your brother. A donkey might actually do some work.” The Sultan laughed. “Do you trust me, Mehmet? Then trust the plan. Esina’s as predictable as they come; did you really think I hadn’t considered this could happen?”

Young Mehmet grumbled, clearly unsatisfied.

“I’ve been thinking about this a long time, and it’s not as bad as it looks. As long as we’re both around, everything is going to be just fine....”

There was a knock at the door. The prince moved to open it, and no sooner did he see the figure standing on the other side than his eyes widened in surprised recognition.

“Mehmet!” The short figure recoiled. “I didn’t realize...you’re supposed to be…” The visitor trailed off. “Too late now. It ain’t exactly how I pictured it, but maybe it’s for the best…”

The prince opened his mouth to respond, but as if on cue, the ship shuddered again. And again, this time with a sickening crunch, and then a fiery boom, and then he was falling. There were glimpses of twisted metal, sand below, the clouds in the sky, but the wind whipped ever faster past his ears and he was spinning in the air too quickly to react. And then, finally, there was nothing.

1. Hossani-Bradford HB-?? HMG

Hossani-Bradford is a venerable and recognizable company, known for producing quality arms for the Carnelian government and foreign investors alike. At the request of Major General Pashik, they have recently been looking into improving their well-known HB-75 heavy machine gun. New iterations continue to feature a water-cooled barrel, but development has focused on improving the rate of fire. [1 R]

A collaboration between Hossani-Bradford and the Sultanate’s army, the Type 79 has had a troubled history. Conceived as a sudden necessity after the defeat at Kelkit, government funding for the project suddenly dried up when the war ended. Hossani-Bradford elected to continue pursuing the weapon nevertheless, though they immediately sought permission to sell the product overseas, which was granted. [1 R]

3. Akar Steelworks - Continued development

At the end of the war, the once-great industrial city of Pazar was left a smoking ruin. But out of devastation comes new opportunities. A young man by the name of Mustafa Akar, seeking a place to invest his large inheritance, saw the void left by war and decided to fill it. In 1881, Akar Steelworks became the first factory to reopen in Pazar, and a year later it is still miles ahead of the competition. While not a scientist or an engineer, Mustafa Akar has proven to be a good judge of those who are, and already the company has made several small improvements to the old processes which dominated the city. In the workshops of Akar Steelworks, the best minds of Pazar have set themselves to finding superior materials…. [1 R into superior alloys, by any metric]

Roleplay:

Following the Great War the Grand Principality was left weakened, much of the former naval power lost, infrastructure destroyed and industry left stagnant. Though the economy remained relatively stable it was time to act through Royal Decree. Industry must be rebuilt, infrastructure to be improved upon and the Military to be expanded on to protect the borders and foreign interest of the Cumberlanders. As the most recent incident from the foreign communist rebels entering the country had shown the Military was a shadow of its former self. The proud Cumberlanders must defend their nation from those who would seek to impose their ideology and will over their people.

Gwangnan Dominion

Miyoshi Yukiko and his entourage stood at perfect attention. A middle aged man, he regardless held himself with great control. Miyoshi was not a man to be trifled with, and radiated control. A prime member in the Yukiko regime, he helped this lesser branch of the Imperial Family take control. As a reward he was given what he ever truly wanted; a Navy. It was he who had ensured the full embracement of Airships. The crews were trained to peak performance, the training programs brutal. As The Great War began, the young Admiral Miyoshi entered it with gusto. Throughout the countless wars, he kept earning more and more victories. Using Airships in cunning ways, and the power of his men, the IGN was seldom defeated. They flew above the blood of the trenches, and earned glory next to the stars.

And yet things had taken a turn for the worse after the War. Though alive, Gwangnan  as a whole was battered. Vitramite productivity had dropped to basically zero. The IGN watched as Shibata and other prime Clan members argued over the IGN. Many were hearing rumors that the fleet was going to be mothballed. Miyoshi himself was furious, but kept his reservations private. He would trudge on as loyal as ever to the Dominion. But it stained his pride, to see his elite crew making preparations to put the Airships to rest. As they stand watching this all, a messenger in Imperial livery hurries up. Bowing to the Admiral, he offers a scroll. Taking it angrily and opening it, the Admiral reads the letter. Then blinking his eyes, he reads it again in disbelief. Mothball procedures are cancelled.

53a3c264-003e-11e8-8060-ac162d8bc1e4.jpg

With a burst of energy the Crews start reversing their work. They begin to prepare their Airships for once more glorious combat. As the months roll by it becomes apparent why. IGA troops start to arrive in the airfields, guarding large shipments drawn by serfs and ox. Freighters as well help with a more modern touch, dropping their cargo off into massive warehouses. It would seem though they lack their own, Vitramite was flooding in from somewhere.

Emperor Kanemoto Tetsuo signs an official declaration of war, many months after April 16th. In a show of solidarity with their northern monarchial neighbor, the Dominion will join the war to stem the Red Tide. The USP was clearly expanding with rhetoric pointed straight at the heart of any monarch. Their wanton aggression had to be checked,  and the Gwangnanesse were happy to oblige. However such matters take time, and months keep rolling by.

Republic of Emmeria
1882

qaCpQfH.jpg

--------------------------------------------------

A Realm of Peace

Across the vardant and fertile lands of Emmeria, the people live their day to day lives. Trains and people move about the cities and countryside, the occasional plane makes a fly over as they come and go to deliver mail.

Having secured its existence they’d need to look outside the nation, to resources, trade partners and possible rivals that could threaten its very being. Luckily the latter appeared to be in short supply within the moment as the Great and Broken Powers struggle against one another. Emmeria was too small and perhaps insignificant in the eyes of the world to be bothered with, which they would use to their advantage.

While the Republic of Emmeria knows peace, the world itself is a boiling pot of conflict and war. Emmeria must be prepared to defend itself, as such the military has been given particular attention for technological advancement. (5 Research Slots)

Being one of the more numerous heavy weapons in use across the world, Emmeria begins work to re-create their own version of the Machine gun. Though it is more commonly referred to as a Heavy Repeating Rifle. (1R)

While the Mountains offer good protection and a natural ground stronghold, the Skies are the ever persistent and vital field of battle. Planes need to be stronger, faster and more maneuverable. But for now they focus on its power to create a far more capable Engine. (1R)

Everyone wants more powerful planes and airships, but perhaps matching the great powers in the Air is too much a step to take. So Emmerian Military Officials agree a ground to air defence is far more conceivable. Anti-Air Cannons! Flak? (1R)

One issue commonly noticed and never solved in warfare with the advancement of Airships was a proper way to communicate, forcing Airships to rely on flags and light signals to communicate drastically affecting its communication and cooperation abilities negatively. STEEL HORIZON

1882

Though the War is done, the thousand shattered fragments of its consequences force conflict and unrest wherever they fall. In this age, where men should be laying down their arms to return to their families, events cause a constant downwards progression, with slaughter and barbarism commonplace. Peace is a rare and priceless commodity in this era - and it is a wise leader that will protect it at any cost.

In the North, the Tsardom of Pozharin has won an overwhelming victory against Ramudan Sedivic’s First Socialist Army. Tens of thousands litter the field in what has been the bloodiest battle since the end of the Great War. The River Izon is clogged with the corpses of United Socialist Pact infantry, and their withdrawal from that gory field has left a lasting impression on the troops and officers that survived that hellish day. USP pride has been shattered, and their retreat is conducted in grief and ignominy - it is a rare day that an army suffers 75% casualties. Worse still for the USP is the joint Declaration of War by the Grand Duchy of Praha and the Gwangnan Dominion - it is rumoured the Tsar and his allies are preparing an expeditionary force to launch a counter-invasion of the USP. For the Communist Party, however, all is not yet lost. The Communist Party of Kandistan (CPK) - in conjunction with the Communist Parties of Holgograd (CPH) and Turmensk (CPT) have declared their unanimous support for the USP. The CPH and CPT have dispatched reinforcements to the Great Socialist Army, while the CPK has launched a ruthless series of probing attacks into the Gwangnan Dominion. It seems, in the days to come, that yet more blood will be spilled.

Meanwhile, the Anaraein Civil War has only become bloodier. In the south-west, a brutal stalemate has been reached between Confederate and Communist forces, while the Communist 2nd and 6th Armies advance swiftly on the capital of Aranak. Confederate hopes had been pinned upon General Shule Corvin, but political intrigue has seen Corvin stripped of his post, and an attempt was made upon the General’s life, by the Dictator Wallius Martek, and Corvin was forced to flee the city. What Martek did not count upon, however, was the intense loyalty much of the army felt towards their most heroic general. The 1st and 2nd Anaraein Armour Groups, joined by the 4th through 8th Confederate Armies, deserted the official Anaraein government and fled east with General Corvin, where they declared him Dictator of the Confederacy, and appointed the city of Hunthelm as temporary capital. With Martek’s loyalists in the south-west pinned and the Communists free to move in the North-West, the capital of Aranak is all but taken by the Aranaein Communist Party (ACP), and Martek has officially fled the city with his government.

In the Free Provinces, separatism is at an all time high - the Provinces of Tormina and Sorent, in the north, have each declared themselves as independent republics, while a major Communist revolt is underway in the Province of Verna in the south, where the Communist Party of Verna seeks to establish a new People’s Republic, outwith the corrupt and increasingly unstable Free Provinces. Free Province troops have been dispatched to each revolt, and already horrific tales of torture, rape and genocide are circulating among neutral military spectators and reporters - who are suspiciously barred for what the Free Provinces’ Army HQ calls “hot spots”.

Sky piracy is at an all time high, and it seems that the Tsornluft Pirates have a monopoly on such criminality. Abigdal Ben-gal, Captain of the Battlecruiser Restoyn, has largely imposed his own hegemony upon a previously disparate group of pirates with a shared heritage. Tsornluft attacks have increased in their ferocity in the past months, and Ben-gal has even succeeded in defeating a Volta-Solvanese expedition into Tsornluft hideouts on their western border - the sound thrashing of the Volta-Solvanese has been a huge loss of face for the Republic, and they are eager to mend the damage done to their reputation.

In the south, war is a constant reality, and none know how the conflict between the Klendari and the Carnelians will turn out.

UNITED SOCIALIST PACT

The Peoples’ Republics of Kandistan, Holgograd and Turmensk gladly agree to trade with the USP, and their troops are already en route to aid in the war against Tsarist tyranny.

Attempts to design a better fighter craft meet largely with failure, as the project hits problem after problem early in its life. No headway is made, and it is recommended to ministers that the project be scrapped.

USP attempts to design a working tank fair better, however. Having observed Tsarist armour in action at the Battle of Izon, USP officers quickly set to work with engineers to create a war machine capable of orchestrating breakthroughs in the bloody world of stationary warfare. It is speculated the tank will be ready for production by 1884.

COMMONWEALTH OF VALDEK

Most ignore Valdenian efforts to build an anti-piracy coalition - Sky Pirates being something of a secondary concern to the raging civil wars plaguing the Confederacy and the Free Provinces, and the Klendari Sultanate seems largely unconcerned with the Sky Pirates.

Trade deals are accepted.

The Valdenian squadron make some headway in staving off pirates, but the sheer number of pirate vessels mean that some will always get through the screens. Valdenian trade survives largely intact over the year, but there is still damage done. -2000G.

5’600G does not go a long way to solving chronic Valdenian infrastructure problems. Indeed, the money is swallowed by the project, which seems to have made little headway. More, much more, will be needed.

Vymen and Rolf produce a passably effective machine gun prototype, that has some advancements over previous models - like a slightly better rate of fire. It is not, however, ground breaking technology, and it will be ready for introduction by 1883.

Projects Wire and Horseshoe. PMs.

GRAND DUCHY OF PRAHA

The Grand Duchy succeeds in developing a radically improved machine gun model that is far superior to the current model in service. What’s more, it will be ready by 1883.

Attempts to develop a tank end in abject failure - the designed prototype is so unreliable that it explodes and kills its whole crew while in tests. The project proves to be a sink hole for money. -5000G

No headway is made on Dreadnoughts.

No headway is made on Carriers.

Trade is openly accepted by all who are offered.

Pozharin accepts the non-aggression pact, and sends the recently recalled Lieutenant-General Loginovsky to oversee a military envoy to Praha. It is expected that the victor of the Izon will have much to offer the Officers of the Grand Duchy.

CARNELIAN SULTANATE

Trade is accepted by all offered parties.

Hossani-Bradford succeed in creating an excellent HMG for the Sultan’s armies. With an improved water circulation system and a drastically improved rate of fire, the HB-82 will be ready for introduction in 1883.

The Type 79 continues to have a troubled and indecisive history - little progress is made on the weapon, largely due to the confused and incomplete way the weapon was left at the end of the war. Some tentative reports have been made that the Type 79 may be available for implementation by 1890, but this remains to be seen.

Akar makes little progress into a new alloy at present - though the potential for a stronger and more enduring metal is not far from his fingers. His primary innovation is one of efficiency - in his attempts to improve metals he has instead improved production and, should the Sultan choose to adopt his proposed new steel mill reforms, Carnelian steel mills may be produced an extra unit of steel by 1885.

Without any kind of airforce, the Tsornluft Pirates run rampant with Carnelian trade - in fact, Tsornluft ships seem obsessed with the Carnelians, they are often observed leaving richer looking prey alone to chase Carnelian traders, and ships that look vaguely Klendari in design are often seen under their banners. -5000G

GRAND PRINCIPALITY OF CUMBERLAND

Trade is accepted by all who are offered.

Cumberland’s attempts to contact Martek’s government largely meet with failure as, currently, it is nowhere to be found. However, military attaches are found to be welcome with Corvin’s newly arranged government - so long as Cumberland acknowledges the legitimacy of the new Confederate cabinet, of course.

Principality attempts to develop Battlecruisers fail at this time - engineers report that the project struggles to make any breakthrough on a modern turbine system that would propel the ship at any great speed.

Ben-gal’s Pirates make an impression on Principality trade, and they enjoy a year of living on the Prince’s dime. -3000G

GWANGNAN DOMINION

Trade is accepted by all who are offered.

Study of the 25in batteries proves to be slow, as there is little they can do but guess, short of taking the guns apart. Still, it is estimated that Dominion Engineers will be able to replicate the guns by 1887.

Vitraium technologies are neither easy nor simple systems to work with. Gwangnanese scientises, for all their education, struggle to improve the current lift capabilities of a Vitraium core or engine.

Rifle designers declare that they may have an improved infantry rifle ready for deployment by 1885.

Engineers, under supervision from the IGN, successfully begin the process of designing a new turbine system that will drastically increase ship speed. It is expensive, but the potential for this new design is present and IGN officers are universally excited. Predicted to be ready by 1887. -1000G.

Carrier designs submitted to the IGN prove to have little of the desired traits, and designers must return to the drawing board in an attempt to produce better systems for these new carriers.

Attempts to produce gas prove to be a roaring success, despite the moral implications of such research. Gwangnanese chemists prove able to whip together hideously toxic mixes, and they will be ready for production by 1884.

REPUBLIC OF EMMERIA

Emmerian designers prove capable of producing an inspired machine gun that is superior to basically all of its foreign contemporaries - either in design or in general usage. The Emmerian design will be ready by 1883.

Again, Emmerian designers prove to be far ahead of their fellows, and a solid tank design will be ready for production by 1884.

Emmerian air designers prove to be utterly inspired - they successfully design a fighter plane that is leagues ahead of all others. Armed with the most modern armament available and possessing keen speed and agility, this new aeroplane is a true masterpiece of aerial engineering. Ready by 1883.

Emmerian attempts to produce Flak guns meet with pure failure, and the project quickly becomes the trash can, for all scientists and engineers deemed incapable of working on more prestigious projects.

The genius of Emmerian science is impossible to miss by now, for it is predicted that there will be a working radio system in full circulation by as early as 1886.

All trade is accepted.

THE KARAKHWA

Project Godwhisperer is well underway. PMs.

The Karakhwa see strange things in the desert, for the Hasan are a people with beliefs totally opposite to their own. While both may be nomadic, the Hasan hate the sky, believing it to be home to the Devil. Instead, they openly roam in large convoys of horses and trucks, traveling freely around their desert. What’s more, the Karakhwa see large, mobile towns built upon huge tracks, traveling across the desert. Heart of Iron’s Braves failed to take much loot, for the Hasan are quick to turn their artillery upon ships they see in the sky, but they learned much.

Trade is accepted by all.

Tierra Roja

IoWSm3L.jpg

The palace of the colonial administration was a vast marble complex, built in gorgeous fashion by a particularly corrupt Governor some decades ago. It had beautiful, scenic gardens, classical colonnades, and marble fountains that juxtaposed themselves against the simpler red bricks that made up most of the building’s construction. The outside of the palace was merely a foreshadowing for the luxurious interior--mahogany wood, gold leaf, and expensive art spanned every piece of furniture and wall. Haggard servants and bureaucrats rushed around the lower portions of the palace silently, sticking close to the walls and deliberately avoiding certain rooms and higher floors. Loud cracks and booms reminded them why, as a pair of bullets whizzed down from roof and struck an expensive bust of the former governor. Muffled cheers reverberated through the palace as Phillip de Triste morosely ascended the beautiful steps to El Presidente’s meeting room.

As he approached the doorway, two grizzled looking revolucionarias stood up from their chairs and gave Phillip a lazy pat-down. After their search, Phillip was unceremoniously shoved through the door into the party.

Surrounding a magnificent table were about fifteen men, all sporting thick, black, greasy moustaches and wearing strange combinations of expensive suits and wide-brimmed peasant’s hats. Each one was fully armed, with pistols, rifles and shotguns, with bandoleers of bullets hanging off every belt. All of them surrounded the rotund, red-faced figure, “Toro Rojo,” El Presidente Miguel Doritaros, who was currently hammering down shots of Tequila. His associates appeared to be quite pleased with his efforts, indicated by the number of bullet-holes around the room.

Phillip meekly pushed past some of the revelers, who groaned in contempt upon noticing him. El Presidente, for what it was worth, kept his visible disgust to a minimum. His sombrero was slightly askew as his encroaching inebriation began to take hold. Beneath a sweaty face and a thick, luscious, black moustache, El Presidente grinned politely.

“Hola, compañero!” He roared, spittle flying from his mouth. “Ministero de Comercio is here, amigos! That calls for another round!” Loud cheers erupted from his associates, and Phillip quickly covered his ears as gunfire roared around him. One of the borrachos pulled a bottle from somewhere and filled another glass in front of Miguel. “What is it, my bean-counter?” Miguel continued. “Need help looking through the sofas for pesos?”

The burrachos laughed heartily, and one started shooting at the roof again, prompting the rest to immediately start firing further rounds above them. Phillip did his best to remain calm under the circumstances.

“No, Señor Doritaros.” Phillip quietly stammered while brushing falling roofing-plaster from his shoulders.  “I simply ask for you to look at some documentation for-“ He was cut off almost immediately by six large guns being pointed at his head. A particularly greasy, foul-smelling man leaned into his face, so close that he could smell the tequila and rancid enmolada on his breath.

“That’s El Presidente to you, burócrata!” He spat. “Don’t you dare show him disrespect! He is the Liberator! The Boundless Bull! The Hero of the Revolution! The Man of the People!”

Miguel slammed down another glass with a burp, and the men began cheering and firing into the air once more. Phillip tried to calm his breathing in the meantime.

“I told you already, compañero.” Miguel leaned back on his chair and stretched. “You handle all that numbers ****. I don’t pay you to come sauntering up to me like a puta every time a peasant needs their cock waxed.”

Si, El Presidente, but due to Tierra Roja not having a constitution I literally cannot host foreign dignitaries or approve trading contracts without your permission. No-one will do anything unless you give the word.” Many of the borrachos remained silent, somewhat confused by the conversation. Rather than listen, they took the moment to reload their guns.

“Wait, pig-****, are you telling me we have some foreigners coming here now?!” El Presidente’s eyes opened wide, sobering up briefly.

“Er, no, El Presidente. We have received s-“

“Then tonight, we drink!” Miguel roared at the top of his lungs, and the gunfire started back up immediately. Dozens of shots pierced through priceless art and expensive wood, sending the pieces flying in every direction. “Bring me the city’s finest whores! One for each man, and three for me!” He yelled to no-one in particular. Assuredly someone would do what he asked. He picked up the bottle of tequila, and filled a glass in front of Phillip. “Have a drink, amigo! Get us all started!”

Phillip stuttered at the suggestion. “I probably shouldn’t, El Presidente. I have much work to do, and I prefer not to drink before lunch.” The room went completely silent. Slowly, but surely, every gun was drawn from the men’s holsters and pointed directly at Phillip’s head. Though his face appeared as rosy as ever, Miguel’s eyes revealed a cold, and cruel countenance only a drunken tyrant could properly pull off.

“Now now, compañero. You are in my house.” He leaned towards Phillip, the antique chair groaning and creaking beneath him, and hissed through a toothy smile. “So when I say ‘drink,’ you ******* drink. Comprendes?”

Phillip ******* drank.

Gwangnan Dominion

Massive crowds flood the capital streets as Admiral Miyoshi Yukiko readies his precious Navy. The IGN was the pride of the Dominion, and an elite force. They put on a show for the crowds as they depart north. The Battleships surrounded by the smaller ships fly by in formation. A single volley is released in salute of the Emperor. A sullen brigade of IGA soilders sit in the Freighter, few fans of their accommodations. The fleet heads off to the Tsardom to continue the promised fight against the USP. As the cogs of war churn, it becomes apparent things are becoming more dire.

For as the IGN leaves for glory, at home trouble strikes. The odious Kandistani regime in their mountain holds was forever a thorn in Gwangnan’s side. And now with USP urging, they had become a knife. General Adachi of the IGA is tasked to hold the line with whatever units he can patch together. As the fight grinds on, across the Dominion Imperial officials are put to work. They begin to better administer much needed funds directly to fledgling Dominion companies. This growth will be the start of a resurgent Dominion.

With war erupting on all fronts life can be far from normal. The Dominion under the Yukiko regime keeps a very tight grip. Order and Law must be preserved, and the indoctrinated masses kept fed. The Emperor of the Tetuso Clan continues his mediocre rise to teenage hood. Spending little time in his palace, he instead tours the hundreds of small Dominion towns and hamlets. A peculiar sight, the Emperor arriving in simple IGN garb. The Yukiko cared little for his moves, especially if he was seen groveling with peasants. But he was an earpiece for the Tetsuo clan. A defeated and oppressed clan that had lost the aristocracy. And so now this Emperor who treated the serfs well spread their plans.

The radiantly beautiful Shintani Tetsuo also holds a strong mind behind her looks. The leader of the Imperial Research and Development teams. The Dominion holds many bright minds, all coordinated under Imperial guidance. This project however requires only Shintani and her best. They continue this deadly game of chemistry. The other half of her team begins to ready it’s actual implementation. Working with artillery officers they begin to devise shells to fit the gas into, for Artillery, and Naval Guns.

Passive research

1; Studying the 25 Inch Ground to Air Batteries in the PoI [Finished ‘87]

Scientist work with military minds, both hired from the rising ‘Yasuda Big Arms Manufactory’. This company had gladly seized the offered contract to study and learn from these guns. Under strict orders to not dismantle them, the going is slow. The Company itself is trying to specialize it’s work in guns for the Navy. This 25 Inch Canonry though ground based, was a worthy start.

2; Improving altitude capability of Airships [Started ‘82, Ongoing]

The IGN has a growing need to allow their Airships to rise higher and higher. Already accustomed to the mountainous altitude, they try to learn from what they know. However it is much harder with the Vitramite systems. Still a new technology , and regardless of their education and aviation skill, the IGN considers itself in an infantile stage. And so they have to build from the ground up. They start with looking at the basics, and seeing how it operates in lifting Airships. Some laugh at such easy work. But the Scientist are determined to fully learn the art of their craft.

3; Modern State-of-the-Art Infantry Rifle [Finished ‘85]

4; Battlecruisers [Finished ‘87]

The cherry on top of the IGN’s work. Engineers, many retired from service in the Combat ranks, assemble to asses these new turbines. With the added gold, the funding helps. The goal is to make a turbine that easily be retrofitted into the IGN fleet.

5; Carrier Designs [Started ‘82, Ongoing]
Here too the IGN is forced to start from the basics, and work their way up.

The Concept of a Warship on land hasn’t been one to slip by the Military's ears as a possible reality. They begin the workings of creating an Armored Tractor (Armor Brigade, 1R To be Completed in 84)

One issue commonly noticed and never solved in warfare with the advancement of Airships was a proper way to communicate, forcing Airships to rely on flags and light signals to communicate drastically affecting its communication and cooperation abilities negatively. Beginnings into Research of the Radio (1R, Completion upon 86)

The war draws ever closer, the people of Emmeria worry if it will come onto Emmerian Soil! The Military looks to find a new styled Aeroplane, one capable of delivering precise bombardment upon enemy troops at the expense of speed and agility. (1R Bombers)

A Massive expansion into Industry is approved by President Olson, He doesn’t seek to join into the open conflicts. But in the horrible scenario that war seeks them they will be prepared! (57,500g - 5 Heavy Industry, 4 Steel Mills, 1 Vitramite Mine, 1 Vitramite Refinery)

February, 1883

“To where!?”

“I believe you heard me quite clearly, Representative Anderson. Do I have to repeat myself?” The President stated calmly from his desk. Behind him, a view of the vast grounds surrounding the President’s Home, and the complex of administrative buildings within the capital. Campbell continued to look down at the paper, continuing to write.

“Why am I being sent there of all places. Surely there are more fitting assignments..”

“Your instructions will be delivered shortly. A corvette is awaiting you within the shipyards, prepared for the journey of course.” He finished writing, folding the paper before sealing it and stamping it. The president outstretched the paper to the representative. “Do not, open this. Just deliver it. This is to remain completely secret, Anderson, do you understand?”

“Yes, sir” Anderson said quietly, as he took the letter out of Campbell’s hands

“Then go”

The man turned on his feet, leaving the President’s office, and house as quickly as was respectful. He walked through the administrative grounds, and through the gates where his transport awaited him. The now-pale man quickly boarded the truck, unusually silent. As it moved through the various streets and roads of Cesan towards the docks, Anderson could feel the letter burning in his coat pocket. Like a hot iron. It wasn’t until the airship was boarded, and the information stored away safely was he able to calm down...

The Deployment of the II ‘Hoch’ Air Corp

Over the skies of the Anareia, the recently deployed Valdenian II Air Corp has been making quite a name for itself through its almost year of sustained and constant combat against the communists. Utterly outclassing their communist foes’ air forces, UAM 82 fighters have become the terror of the skies, and one of the Corvinists’ most useful assets.

At home, certain members of the Corp have become well known and celebrated national heroes. The most notable of these is Frederick Van Alkmaar, the most decorated pilot in the VCAF thus far. Throughout his year deployment, he has been credited with downing or destroying 18 communist fighters in the air, and many more on the ground. The president of the Commonwealth, Benjamin Campbell even publicly congratulated the pilot at Cesan, and awarded him several decorations.

Air-Marshal Simon Hoch has also become quite celebrated as well, though not as widely within the public. Many officers and staff members within and outside of the VCAF have formally congratulated him on his victories, and he was promoted to 1st Air-Marshal in late December, 1883.

Despite the closure of 1883, the Commonwealth has remained committed to aiding in the war against the communists in Anareia. Encouraged by their victories, Campbell publicly announced the governments’ ambition to deploy VCA forces to the area, and pledged increased reinforcements to the II Air Corp.

The 1883 International Arms Expo

In this age of rapidly advancing technology and innovation, the Commonwealth was not keen on being left behind. Both the army lacked the contracts and funding to adequately and continuously develop enough new equipment. As such, after a quick congressional vote, the hosting of the First International Arms Expo was arranged for. The exposition would invite private companies from across the world to display and present the latest in armor, aviation, infantry equipment, etc technology. At the exposition, teams from every branch of the Commonwealth Military would go about evaluating projects, those deemed effective would receive Commonwealth funding, and be granted contracts to produce the equipment of the Commonwealth Military.

The Carnelian Sultanate

In the city of Sard, there was a palace. Surrounded by broad gardens, guarded by veteran warriors, surrounded by citizens eager to see their monarch, the house was home to the Carnelian sultans and had been for centuries, even before they came to power. The house was an architectural masterpiece: imposing to all who looked at it, comfortable to all who entered. The rooms of the house were all exquisitely-appointed, and everyone who stayed in the house was served the finest food with ingredients brought from all over the world.

But it had never been a house that Abdul wanted to live in.

The young prince had never been happier than when the Great War arrived, when the family had to relocate to the countryside. It was quiet there, quiet and uncomplicated. While their father directed new offensives, Abdul and his brother had been free to explore the hills, to hunt and swim along the creeks, to wander without the need for constant bodyguards.

But Mehmet was not Abdul, and Abdul could never be Mehmet. The two walked different roads as they aged, and the crown prince was insatiable - as he grew older, he threw himself into preparing for his birthright. Abdul watched as his best friend grew distant, how the prodigy was soon swarmed by courtiers even at the country estate. They were false men with false smiles, and Abdul wanted nothing to do with them.

When the war ended, he stayed in the country against his father’s wishes, wanting to escape politics entirely. Maybe it was foolish to think he could avoid it, but Mehmet had seemed so sure of himself at the time, and his letters made it sound like things were going well. Apparently not. Abdul’s brother was dead, and now he was on his way to the one house he had resolved never to set foot in again.

As the young prince’s car passed through the gates, he stared sullenly at the crowd of citizens gathered for the coronation. Most didn’t look much happier. “Understandable,” he thought. He wasn’t the Sultan he’d been expecting either. Soldiers saluted as he approached the palace steps, until at last he was in view of the men standing there. He recognized most of them: his father’s ministers, waiting for his arrival with welcoming expressions.

False men, with false smiles.

Abdul had never had a reason to go into politics. He lacked the patriotism of his brother, and he thought his father’s ambition misguided. But looking at these men, he couldn’t stop thinking of the face of the only friend he had ever had, and something else awoke inside him. And as the band struck up the anthem and he stepped out to take the crown that should never have been his, he felt it in every fiber of his being: turgid, white-hot rage.

Abdul was not Mehmet. But soon, the murderers in this house would wish he were.

Science

1. Scarab Type 83 Forward Firing Aircraft Rocket (FFAR)

Scarab arms, maker of the ScaF-10 air superiority fighter amongst other things, has for most of its history been owned by the Carnelian royal family. It has always been a profitable enterprise, though by virtue of sending its profits directly to the Sultan there was never much pressure to actually compete. Finally unable to reconcile the potential for corruption with his desire for a quality military, Mehmet III formally divested himself from the company in 1860, and since then Scarab has operated as a publicly-traded corporation.

Now, following the extensive use of ScaF-10s at the recent battle of Kesun, Scarab sees an opportunity to make their vehicles even more useful. Engineers have proposed small high explosive rockets to be carried under the wings, to be fired at targets which can currently only be strafed. They believe the rockets could offer several advantages over bombs: particularly with the rise of large airships on the modern battlefield. [NEW RESEARCH.]

2. Type 79 80mm AA Cannon

Development on the Type 79, whose name is now a source of embarrassment due to both the year and the government nomenclature, stubbornly continues. Managers at Hossani-Bradford must continually fight to keep the project funded, citing various markets and variants they can apply the design to. [1890 estimate??]

3. Akar Steelworks - Continued development

Akar steelworks continues its expansion in the city of Pazar. By now rivals have begun to spring up, but the young newcomer’s effect on the industry is already pronounced, and many other foundries have had no choice but to adopt his methods. The future is bright for this enterprise!  [Reforms complete in 1885]

How do we get there? How did you get here, by the way?' [Will asked].
He heard Halt's deep sigh and knew he'd done it again.

'Do you ever,' the older Ranger said with great deliberation, 'manage to ask just one question at a time? Or does it always have to be multiple choice with you?'

Will looked at him in surprise. 'Do I do that?' he asked. 'Are you sure?'

Halt said nothing. He raised his hands in a 'See what I mean?' gesture...

'Halt,' [Selethen said], 'I could be wrong, but I think you were just guilty of the same fault. I'm sure I heard you ask two questions just then.'
'Thank you for pointing that out, Lord Selethen,' Halt said with icy formality.
