Republic of Emmeria

Radios in homes, public bars and places of gathering tune in as Floyd Olson is once again sworn into office for his second six year term. Making this the first radio announced presidential speech.

"The past six years have been years of peace..and tension as our neighbours still have yet to learn the lessons of the Great War. Let us remember the millions who died and what has allowed us our freedom as a nation with a moment of silence."

he would take a moment and remain silent before continuing

"Their souls are now in gods hands, and it is up to us to ensure our children learn from such events so that they may never be repeated. I as President, have been entrusted once more with the responsibility to keep our nation out of war and conflict so that we may continue to know peace and prosperity."

"But let us not mistake needless conflict with a capable defense. I plan to expand our military and seek and hunt the lawless and barbaric forces that plague not just Emmeria but the world over. Justice is long overdue, and we shall bring the wrathful hand of god almighty down upon all who commit to piracy!"

The City of Vulcan saw massive construction throughout the mountain the city sits aside as drydocks for Airships expand deep and wide.

It is the hope that once the Pirate and tribal threats to Emmerian and World Trade have been dealt with the armed forces can be minimized and limited to a pure defense force.

Gwangnan Dominion

Events abroad were coming to a major point of concern for the isolated Empire. Generally they ket to their vast mountain ranges, while the outside world kept out. But the Great War had changed that. The Empire had set out into the world for years, slaughtering all they could. Their own mountain ranges were invaded. In savage back and forth war the shackles of the past are gradually broken. More and more Gwangnan is becoming an interconnected piece in a global facade of avarice and power. And what the Yukiko clan saw around them was more upsetting then anything. Though the Republic of Emmeria was seen as a friend and partner, the same could not be said for many others. Kandistan was still prancing around, gloating of their easy victory over Kawakami Adachi. But this year marks a turning point in Gwangnanese history.

Thanks to a large investment, Shibata Yukiko was able to speed up his plans. Already the Empire was making preliminary designs on dreadnoughts. But that is becoming increasingly clear to be a mammoth task. Instead he is forced to backtrack. At the behest of many family members, they urge a more realist perspective. The Empire desperately needed more funds, and better ways of mountain combat. The industry had to be grown eve further, and city growth encouraged. Things were made hard with the lack of easy travel. But perhaps with the advent of the radio, at least words could travel fast.

*With this in mind, General Adachi is ordered to continue the IGA expanding doctrine. Scientist and Veteran Officers from the war are contracted to assist. They will take the lessons learned from the Mountain and Great Wars. Seeking to emulate Kandistan, training begins on with the 1st Imperial Division. The troops will learn the harsh lessons of surviving and fighting in mountains, maneuvering, ambushes, and the other various needed skills. Meanwhile the Research and Development branch of the Empire will focus on emulating Kandistani innovations. The focus is to gain proper mountain gear, and equipment.

Passive Research /  [!] = Responses needed.

1; Studying the 25 Inch Ground to Air Batteries in the PoI [Finished ‘87]

Scientist work with military minds, both hired from the rising ‘Yasuda Big Arms Manufactory’. This company had gladly seized the offered contract to study and learn from these guns. Under strict orders to not dismantle them, the going is slow. The Company itself is trying to specialize it’s work in guns for the Navy. This 25 Inch Canonry though ground based, was a worthy start.

2; Battlecruisers [Finished ‘87]

The cherry on top of the IGN’s work. Engineers, many retired from service in the Combat ranks, assemble to asses these new turbines. With the added gold, the funding helps. The goal is to make a turbine that easily be retrofitted into the IGN fleet.

[!] 3; “Parachutes” [Started ‘86]

One glaring issue for the IGN and the air wings, was a lack of survival rates in crashes vessels. More and more servicemen were clamoring for some way, even a slim chance, to survive sinking ships and planes. Currently the RnD has come up with some form of canvas and cloth rig a solider can strap in. One that will perhaps allow pilots and officers on Airships to survive. The project is focused on quality, and small scale for military elites and pilots. But who knew where it could lead!

Tierra Roja

Tierra Roja, as a whole, is deeply disgusted.

The winner of the Air Race, upon which so much wealth was spent and obtained, has had its champion murdered! The remnants of the train and a freighter are found after both transports failed to turn up on schedule. After a short search along the tracks, the train was found partly derailed, its passengers butchered to a man. The horror of such a thing occurring within Tierra Roja’s outer limits sows some discontent among the people. The culprit was deemed pirates, yet some are skeptical as they never attacked land-routes before. El Presidente, in a public speech, vowed to put an end to the pirates “with his bare hands” if he must. The rest of the speech was mostly interrupted by gunshots and tequila-drinking.

The aftermath proves a boon for other strange groups and peoples. Within far-flung villages and country towns, strangers baring the sigil of El Salvador begin appearing. The Cult of El Salvador was thought to have been exterminated centuries ago after the Plantation Rebellion of 1692. The Klendari rulers hunted down each cultist (of whom the rebellion was blamed on) and executed them without mercy or respite (these brutal pacifications would ironically lead to the Miner’s War of 1697). Nevertheless, the current government of Tierra Roja has no official stance on the cult, and thus they continue to grow on the fringes of society...

Research:
An idea is hatched by some of the drunker engineers throwing together the battleships in the shipyards of Madero. Fighter and bomber planes were quite useful in combat, but trying to bring them to a foreign conflict was frustrating. First, one would have to transport them via air or sea, and then build an airstrip for them to take off. This was a lot of time and effort that could be spent on harassing enemy ground emplacements and aircraft. What if they could transport a landing-strip with the fleet? What if there was an airship that was an airstrip? A flying airstrip! In their stupor, they write down notes to themselves so they could explore the idea when sober.

Looking over aftermath reports of the Cumberlander’s raid on the pirate base, it was concluded that Tierra Roja would need a fighter plane to counter future pirate raids involving smaller craft. The only necessary detail given to the engineers is that the new planes are to have lots of guns.

The year itself called for expansion in the battered economy of the Principality, seeking to put the majority of the years purse into the economy and expanding the nation's borders through new settlement programs. There would be massive expansions through civilian industry and constructing new commercial buildings in one of the more neglected of Cumberlands Cities. Though this causes some grumblings in the Military due to the lack of sustained expansion in either the Army or the Navy.

NAZR DYNASTY

A riders chestnut horse giddly trots along the gravel road, the path shielded from the menacing rays of the sun by the cool embrace of oak trees, its branches  saturated with green leaves. The rider, dressed in crimson red vestments with some scrub hardening his face, gazes between the thick trunks of the trees, towards the orchard, and all its rows of smaller sized trees. As he passes each row, he notices entire families, dressed in stained and dirty robes, tending the trees. The story repeats itself. The children stuck under the leaves, on their backs, picking at the fruits near the bottom of the tree. The women and older girls are on their feet, their fingers at laboring away at every branch, removing every single fruit. And the men, where are the men? He strains himself to look, adjusting himself in his saddle, until he spots a long train of dozens of men, hauling woolen sacks laden with fruits along a lonely country road cutting in front of him, towards a desolate looking farm-house to his right with a dense thicket behind it. The hose stops, but the laborers don't. One of the men does stop, looking up to the rider with solace, beads of sweat dripping from the tip of his nose and his chin. The two men, of vastly different backgrounds and lifestyles, exchange reflective glances. The rider clicks with his tongue, and spurs the horse forward with his legs, continuing to trot along the road.

Finally, he arrives at an airy luxurious palace like home-with a terraced roof, an elegant garden surrounding the house, and beautiful mosaics depicting myths and legends found in the BOOK OF THE MOUNTAIN, the religious source for many of the nations military class. The gravel road encircles a cool fountain, with butterflies and birds habiting at the wild flowers planted around it. The rider follows the road, stopping his horse and dismounting, tying it off to a tree off the road. He grabs a satchel near the rear of the horse, and walks over to the fountain, performing the ritual cleansing necessary before entering the home of a higher-class. He washes his arms to his elbows, his neck, his face, and his feet. This is called tumat. He completes the ritual, and approaches the home, following a path created by tiles. As he nears the door, he is addressed by one of two guards, posted on each side of the wooden door, plain looking but solid, its only feature standing out are its door knob and the knocker, fashioned of gold and engraved with the calligraphy of Badias family.

Sh'lam” states the guard on the right. “Sh’lam lek”  responds the rider. “I have a message from the capitol.” He gently taps the leather buckle on his satchel. The guard extends his hands, beckoning towards the satchel. “I will ensure it reaches him.” The rider shields his satchel, shaking his head thrice. “Er, i have explicit orders to hand it personally to General Badias.” He fumbles momentarily, procuring a small folded piece of paper, a seal of the caliphate greeting the guards eyes as he receives it. “Racha, can you read?” he says, unfolding the piece of paper. The other guard shakes his head thrice as the others brown eyes hopelessly zip across the note. “Just let him in, it has the seal anyways.” the other guard states, annoyed. He hands the note back to the rider, who stuffs it back into his trousers, and raises the sleeves of his ankles, legs, and exposes his neck. The guard passes a pristine white towel through each body part, inspecting it afterwards for any blemishes or stains. He folds it and places it within a pocket in his coat, and opens the door to the palace.

As he steps up, passing the threshold, he is immediately hailed with a gush of cool air, and overwhelmed in stupor with the elaborate ornateness of the interior. The white tiles of the floor polished and shining, the wooden furniture decorating the house finely engraved, the silverware and other previous artifacts lighting up the hall, and the artwork framed on the walls awing any visitor. The door shuts behind him, and the guard interrupts his daze. “Right this way sir.” his arm is outstretched towards a corridor on his right, which he follows, walking behind the guard as a dog being guided by a leash. The guard comes to a large set of double wooden door, and raps it twice. From within, a harsh, raspy, serious voice resonates. “Come in.”

The guard bows down, and opens the door, shutting his eyes and looking away from the room. The rider enters ,the sound of his steps intermingling with the scratching sound of pen on paper. He immediately sprawls across the floor after a couple steps into the room. “There need for such formalities is void, for we are of the same birth.” announces Badias, his trademark voice compelling the rider to stand. The rider rises to his feet, his gaze down. The sound of pen furiously scratching paper stops.  “Look at me.” The riders head slowly rises, meeting the icy expression of the general. The rider feel his green eyes opening his soul, and cannot sustain eye contact with him for more then a few seconds at a time. The rider breaks the silence, his voice fluctuating. “A message from the capitol, Majar.”  The messenger procures a scroll from his satchel, died green. Green meant from the desk of the Chief Minister.  Badias outstretches his hand, confusing the courier. His hand remains frozen, his eyes never once break their grip on the envoy’s. He strides forward several places, placing the scroll gently into the Generals hand’s and striding back. The general immediately unravels the seal, and his eyes glide over the paper. The envoy eyes eyes begin to drift across the room, the austerity of the room surprising him. The room is humble, the desk and furniture simply crafted, the only decoration being a map of the known world, and a romantic painting of a family on a homestead.  His journey is interrupted, as the General rises from his desk, thanking the emissary with a nod, completely out of character to the man before him, as he bypasses him, walking briskly in his military uniform, gripping the hilt of his sword. The rider is left lost in confusion. The doors behind him open, and shut with a loud bang

The guard posted by the door is already standing at attention, while Badias returns the favor.  ‘Prepare horses for the guards and I, with provisions long enough for a journey to the capitol.Summon your accompanant on your way out,`` states Badias, as if relaying orders to a subordinate in the field. The guard begins marching in perfect step away from Badias, opening the door and leaving it open, to which the other soldier marches enters. Badias gaze harshly analyzes the guards every step, longing to find something to criticize as the guards leave and enter the home, and approach him. Once the guard is within his presence, Badias barks another order.  “Bring me Jethro.” The soldier performs an about face, and marches out of the house. Completely alone now, Badias’ stone stare relaxes, the buttons holding in his stomach strain, and his shoulders drop ever so slightly. He now projects the appearance of a homely man, instead of a forbidding , prideful prideful general. His hand runs over the seal of the Caliphate, as he reads the letter once more to himself. His frigid expression and pride returns, and he steps towards the main hall of his house, losing himself in the winding halls of his house.

Roughly an hour later, Badias is saddled upon a horse, three soldiers adjusting their saddles and mounting their provisions on a luggage mule. He is watching a soldier approach in March, while a tall, lanky, scrawny looking man strides calmy beside him.  The pair eventually reaches him, and the soldier stands to attention to Badias, while the man remains unnerved. Badias nods to the soldier, who begins to mount his provisions on the horse, and prepare himself for the journey. “ Jethro, you are entrusted with the upkeep of these grounds in my absence.” Badias says, staring down Jethro. A man with long locks of curly hair, a full beard, and a labored face, stained and littered with wrinkles. “You are freed from your obligations for the time being, organize and run this stead as you see fit, my only demand being you uphold my rules, maintain the peace, and satisfy these quotas, is this clear?” He hands over a slip of paper with a set of scribbles on it, Jethro reading it over. “Yeah.” he calmly replies, returning Badias’ stare. He procures a small black cane, with the same seal on the butt as on the door knob. “Promulgate my will.” He hands it over to him, who receive it carefully, and places it on the ground, leaning on it. He nods in gratitude. Badias leans over his steed, nearly whispering into his ear. “Zephethiah won't give you much trouble.” Jethro nods, moving out the way as Badias yips the horse forward, the five guards following his lead. Once the guards are out of his vicinity, Jethro begins making his way back to the farms, resting the cane on his neck as he walks with a new life in his step.

The Karakhwa

The airship burned a spiral down to the earth, tracing its descent in black smoke and falling bodies. The air inside was boiling, so hot that Heart of Iron could feel the skin on his back crisping and charing even as he struggled at the controls.

“Come, we must go now!” shouted one of the crewmembers, grabbing his shoulder and jerking him back from the controls. “We must go!”

“Then go,” said Heart of Iron, spinning around and shoving the man back towards the nearest exit. For all the good it would do him. The escape boats were all burnt or gone by now. “I will stay,” yelled, before turning back to the controls. He laid his hands on them and hissed in pain. They were burning hot.

“You’re a fool, Heart of Iron. A dead fool!” yelled the man. Then he was gone.

The ground was closing in and the air valves were not responding. He needed more energy from the last of the vitrium. Maybe he could slow the landing enough, just enough to stop a catastrophic structural failure. All it would take-

But the ground was closing in too fast. The white sheets of sand consumed his vision, his hands were sealed to the controls by the heat, his eyebrows were singing off-

Heart of Iron woke with a start, sitting up quickly and looking around. A familiar bedroll, with his ancestral rug on the wall and his wife curled up beside him, her iron colored hair flowing freely. He pushed aside the covers and stood.

Beside him, she shifted and looked up at him with amber eyes. “A nightmare?”

“Yes,” he said, looking down at his hands. They were mottled, scarred and many of his fingers were fused together. Useless.

“Which one?”

“The crash aboard the Spirit of Revenge.”

His wife sat up, the blankets falling to her waist, revealing the enormously intricate tattoos covering her entire body up to her neck. “You know what that means, don’t you?”

“I have dreamed it every time a threat has risen that threatened to end me or my own,” he said, slowly curling his hands into tight fists. “And everytime, I have overcome it.”

She rose and walked up to him, putting a hand on his old, withered chest, it was cold enough to make his hairs stand on end. “This threat will not come from outside the tribes,” she said. “I can sense resentment. Anger. A hunger for power. It grows and festers within our own.”

“You speak of Cloud Hunter,” said Heart of Iron, stepping back and frowning at her.

“Who else but that vicious girl?” said his wife, her eyes flashing with anger.

“She would be the last to turn on me, wife,” said Heart of Iron, steel lining his tone like wires. “I will hear no more of such betrayals. Even from you.”

Actions

-Heart of Iron’s warhounds, staunch loyalists to the last, raid once more this year, in greater numbers. They call themselves the Iron Dogs, and launch various raids with 6 destroyers and 4 corvettes in small groups, or alone. This year, they specifically target Klendari infrastructure, hitting bridges, traintracks, mines, factories. Whatever they can hit without embroiling themselves into dangerous airspace or enemy formations. The goal is clear, to disrupt this modernization of the Klendari state.

-Cloud Hunter also returns from her travels, and with her she brings back her small fleet. They, contrary to the Iron Dogs, will focus on raiding on the Klendari for ships and material. Guns, dhows, destroyers. They focus on ambushing and boarding isolated ships and taking them home, or stripping them of useful technology.

-Solomon continues to dream, his ship sailing over the sands to the west as he tries to understand himself anew.

STEEL HORIZON

1886

The 1st Congress of the First International concludes! The huge assembly of communists, socialists and syndicalists had many discussions and decisions to make, but two were of the utmost priority. First was the stance the First International was to take towards the Anaraein Civil War, and the second was the trial of the would be spy, Orfino Calligieri. Calligieri’s trial was a massive, public affair in the United Socialist Provinces and the world - perhaps the most prolific trial of modern times. Despite many diplomatic protests by what the International describes as “bourgeois” powers, Calligieri was tried on numerous charges. After several weeks, the Venzeatic Ambassador was found guilty of espionage, crimes against the people, counter-revolutionary thought and counter-revolutionary action. With his case closed, the Court determines that for his crimes, Calligieri is to be brought from his cell and executed by firing squad. On January 2nd 1887 Orfino Calligieri is shot, despite the great controversy surrounding what has been called a “kangaroo court”.

On the matter of the Anaraein Civil War, the First International determines that Corvin cannot be allowed to win at any cost. Across the world, the call to arms is sounded. With huge funding by the First International, the International Brigades are summoned to battle boldly singing “The Internationale”, and huge funding is set aside for these tens of thousands of volunteers who sally from every country under the red banner, to fight the tyranny of Corvin.

And all the better it is for the ACP, for Corvin has slowly but surely fought his way into the capital of Aranak. The Corvinists have had to fight hard for their gains - every street taken is bought with blood, and the red defenders give no ground willingly, giving their lives for their cause - for the freedom of the oppressed, as they see it. With the battle having lasted longer than a year, more than two hundred thousand casualties have been sustained on both sides, in the bloodiest action in the Civil War, and the largest battle since the end of the Great War.

With his coffers empty, Tsar Laurent of Pozharin is in an increasingly unstable position. Poverty is running rampant in his country, and after a particularly bad harvest and an extremely cold winter, a terrible famine has sprung up across the country. The commoners, freezing and hungry, are becoming increasingly angry with their absolute monarch and several riots have been quashed by extreme force. One attempt by a large peaceful march on the Tsar’s palace - demanding change, democracy and better rights - was crushed when the Tsar sent in the Imperial Pozharin Army, armed with rifles and machine guns. More than a hundred people are killed and a thousand wounded in the massacre that has become infamous around the world as “Bloody Sunday”.

Further south, the Free Provinces have concluded a peace agreement with the Peoples’ Republic of Verna, which has seen them give several economic and land concessions. Public feeling has turned even more violently against the Free Provinces’ Government, and Enrico Rienzo and his Nationalists ever more loudly protest such action. Further, Rienzo attempts a coup in the Province of Modevia, but he is arrested after a short and bloody confrontation with the National Guard. Rienzo is sentenced to life imprisonment, and several massive riots have broken out all over the country in protest - these riots being especially violent where members of the CPFP and Rienzo’s loyalists clash.

The naval arms race continues as Volta-Solvan, now convinced of the superiority of the Dreadnought, quickly lays down another 3 such capital ships to rebuild their fleet anew, likewise, the Klendari lay down a further 2 such ships. Pozharin fails to build any more due to mounting unrest, but the USP has apparently gained Pozharinite designs through espionage, and the USP seeks now to build a capable battle fleet - they lay down 3 Dreadnoughts, and nearly a dozen destroyers, as their status as the great champion of international socialism is solidified. Grenheim and Estfeld, long rivals, begin their own lesser race, purchasing a dreadnought apiece from Volta-Solvan.

News from the south west is tamer. The Klendari continue their reforms, focusing especially on the Army. Rumours abound of experimentation with new and modern methods of combat, and Klendari observers have been sent to witness the Anaraein Civil War and the new mechanisation of the Praharavkan Army. What’s more, Arslan Pasha, who played a game of cat and mouse with Cloud Hunter, has been promoted to Vice-Admiral and given command of the Border Squadron, tasked with defeating the ongoing Karakhwan incursions into Klendari airspace. Finally, changes are abound in the constitutional monarchy of Perzah, as the Shah Yabiq Khan appoints an extremely territorial and nationalistic government. Protests by the CPSW quickly begin and a small riot begins in the capital, but the new Prime Minister - Ashkan Farzad - responds by setting the paramilitary wing of his party upon the rioters. These well armed paramilitaries butcher most of the Communists in the capital after a week of fighting, and the survivors flee the city, taking refuge in the countryside.

Abigdal Ben-gal has not been inactive either, and his piracy is now spread across the whole northern continent and it continues to rage unchecked - though whether this will continue as a new age of naval development begins remains to be seen.

THE VENZEATIC LEAGUE

The explorers from Venza go forth with great hope in their hearts and minds, and who knows what they will find beyond their shores. (Discord)

Piracy continues. -3000G

THE GRAND DUCHY OF PRAHA

Praharavkan research into aircraft carriers goes fairly well, and such technology will be ready by 1891.

Pozharin, starved for cash, eagerly sells their Praharavkan allies Dreadnought technology, on the terms that the Grand Duchy do not sell or pass it on.

Piracy has now spread far enough to reach the trade lanes of Praha. -3000G

THE CARNELIAN SULTANATE

The Perzahns meet this request with a counter offer of 3’000 Shekels, and for a lease period of ten years.

Baresh, always threatened by the Klendari Sultan and old friends of the Carnelians, eagerly agree to this proposal. They put forwards 7’500G towards a joint railway project, and also propose a military alliance.

Akar, considered to be a genius of steel production, declares that he shall have a stronger alloy prepared for 1892.

Piracy continues. -5000G

THE COMMONWEALTH OF VALDEK

Valdenian investment still proves to be far too little to significantly develop their abysmal infrastructure.

Anti-piracy operations continue, and the Volta-Solvanese are suitably placated, though little to no piracy occurs in Valdenian trade lanes.

Aestas refuses the contract.

Valdenian scientists fail to make any headway into Vitramite research.

A mechanised vehicle will be available by 1893.

The Battle of Aranak rages on… (Discord)

THE REPUBLIC OF EMMERIA

The smoke screen will be ready for deployment to ships in 1888.

Piracy runs rampant now over Emmerian airspace, and the pirates constantly thunder in from the West, raid Emmerian shipping and then flee back in the direction they came from. -5000G

THE GWANGNAN DOMINION

The IGA troopers, born and bred in the mountains, take to this training well. A veteran Mountaineers brigade will be ready by 1888.

Likewise, the IGA need only modernise existing mountain gear, and it will be ready for 1888.

A rudimentary parachute will be ready by 1889.

TIERRA ROJA

Phillip’s thugs quickly clear out the old universities, often enjoying their grimey work. As ever, more will be required before they are actually usable again.

Infrastructural development continues - more labourers are needed, cry the foremen! Better tools are needed, cry the labourers! Do it better, cries El Presidente!

By 1892, Tierra Roja will have access to a particularly heavy kind of fighter, with a long combat range and capabilities to deal with corvettes and freighters - so long as they somewhat vastly outnumber them.

As ever, drinking impedes Tierra Rojan creativity, and it will be 1893 before an aircraft carrier is ready to build.

Piracy continues. -5000G

THE GRAND PRINCIPALITY OF CUMBERLAND

Corvin gladly accepts this honour, though he cannot attend any ceremony until the end of the war. Corvin also awards the wounded Pryce the Anaraein Cross of Valour, 2nd Class. One of the highest awards available in the Anaraein Confederacy.

The Battle of Aranak rages… (Discord)

Piracy continues. -5000G

THE NAZR DYNASTY

Attempts at a mechanised vehicle blow up - literally. No progress is made on this new machine.

Piracy ignores the Nazr Dynasty, for now….

THE KARAKHWA

The Klendari oppose these incursions into their airspace. Arslan Pasha musters his squadron to challenge their aerial invasion. (Discord)

“And you completed this job, that they contracted you for?”

“That is correct..”

“So why have you come to me then, Outlaw? It seems your problem lies with Morzen”

“You say that as if you weren’t one yourself. I did my work, I wasn’t paid. I will extract payment. I assume you know of what I speak of?” He flicked the safety of his Orston 50 on an off, a chronic habit.

Old Henson’s house was dark, almost completely black actually, on account of the man going blind several years ago; Though, the old man still lit a candle on the dining room table, out of habit one might guess. The wind whistled through the house, the whole structure groaning and creaking, as if it was about to collapse in on itself.

“Splitting open Morzen’s man’s skull wasn't exac-”

“Quiet, answer.”

Henson paused for a long time, scratching his short, white beard as he did. He was wearing a simple white shirt, the top few buttons were left undone, revealing his bare old chest, covered in a thin layer of equally white hair. “Well… A good idea”

“I’m not paying for a.. ‘Good idea”’  He pushed the chair back, preparing to stand before Henson stopped him.

Henson sat up in his chair and brought both of his hand to the table “well- hold on now..” He drew a small booklet from his pocket and handed it across the table. “He will be there. An important shipment is arriving in two days. Th-The Lieutenant-Governor will be there as well- In on it, I hear. You’ll make up more than what you’re due.” Beneath the table, he nervously tapped his cane on the cement floor, over and over.

He picked it up, flipping through its pages briefly, A full list of the Di Loren’s transactions, schedule, assets, etc. “Where did you get this? You can’t even see, old man” He probed, raising the booklet in the air.

Henson replied, waving his hand away, “No questions, I don’t ask you any, do I?… I take it this is sufficient?”

“It is.” The Outlaw replied, stuffing the booklet into one of the bags around his waist.

“Payment then?”

He tossed a sizeable sack of coins onto the table as he stood, which was eagerly snatched up by the old man.

“If this is even a fraction of a portion short.. I’ll make sure you pay for it? You hear? Be on your way now..”

“The money is all there, Henson.. Don’t stress yourself.” He walked out of the decaying old house as the blind man dug through the bag, meticulously counting his payment.

GRAND DUCHY OF PRAHA

In the months following the establishment of the First Internationale, the very foundations of Praharavkan society had been shook. However, the good men and women of Praha had yet to turn their backs upon the state. As long as that was the case, the Army could continue their watch on the border with their minds at rest. To ensure that minimal communist agents would infiltrate the Army command structure, a new series of background checks were implemented for all enlistees. All individuals with radical party backgrounds were henceforth banned from obtaining public office and/or serving within the Praharavkan Royal Armed Forces.

However, serious and directed action would be needed to placate the working class. As a matter of fact, upon a warm June morning in the Praharavkan capital of Abelsburg, hundreds of workers took to the streets in a strike, calling for better working conditions, wages, and less hours. More radical elements among them called for the overthrow of the government and its replacement with a new, communist regime. However, many of the workers did not want their name to be associated with far left radicals, and therefore, on the Grand Ducal Administration’s **** list. For centuries, the State had been regarded as a benevolent entity, truly in the best interest of the people at the heart. However, should one fall out of their good graces, there would be to be raised.

Since the State claims no divine right, an idea long since discarded, it has henceforth been rather difficult to convince the public of the Grand Duke’s legitimacy and right to rule. However, the simple fact that all Praharavkan monarchists champion is that the right to rule is too great a responsibility for the people - one that will be misused, and misguided, and one in which the majority oppresses the minority. Over the past decades, Dukes of Praha have increasingly shed their autocratic power, returning many rights to the people - universally seen as enough. In the last few decades, a bicameral institution was created, allowing the various estates the representation they so deserve. Surprisingly however, most people would rather forfeit their rights to suffrage if it meant a job with the government, a secure life, and a stable country.

However, with the advent of global socialism, many concerns have been brought back to the forefront of the nation’s politics. Many more radical elements question the institution and the rule of the Grand Duke. These radicals begin to sow seeds of sedition in the minds of the workers and impoverished. The Grand Duke’s Stalwarts serve as the thin line between anarchy and order.

Outside the Semenov Motor Yards, several hundred auto workers took to the streets, ensuring their voice was heard. Blocking access to one of the city’s main streets, they formed a roaring mass of bodies - one which called for change and shouted various slogans and waved signs in protest. Of course, the military was mobilized to keep the peace - a battalion of infantry and a company of tanks was detached from the nearest duty station to ensure these protests did not erupt into full-fledged riots. As always, the power of the State was displayed, with the formidable T-89M tanks and riflemen cordoning the protests off from the greater city.

News quickly spread up the chain of command, falling upon the ears of party leaders, military officials, and the Grand Duke himself. Today would certainly not be a one-off event. More protests would come until the inevitable grinding of the Praharavkan economic sector to a halt. Concessions would need to be made to appease the masses. By cooperating, the very foundation of the radicals’ arguments are to be shaken. Henceforth will it be proved that the monarchical institution truly acted for the people. Publically, the majority party, loyalists to the Crown, showed bipartisan cooperation with their opposition, working together to hammer out bills which favored improving the lives of the working class. Privately however, contingencies were being drafted in the event of a popular communist uprising.

Praharavka will not succumb to the Red Menace.

1887

The first beams of light were breaching over the crests of the waves of the river Mina. Minute by minute passed, and the rays flooded the land, and nature was awakening itself. The charming songs of the birds filled the air, the trees yawned to life with the rustle of their leaves, and the mysterious and solemn cracks of twigs in the forest began to frequent the full orchestra of the forest.

The sun's light began to also awaken a different part of the forest. The suns rays passed over a small hill, and they began to bombard the face of a still slumbering portion of the forest. A golden line slowly creeped up the slender body of a man, sleeping, reclining against the trunk of a tree. The line moved up his torso, up his neck, trekked across his chin, mouth, and nose, until it reached the very crevice of his eyelids, and he bag to stir.

The man shot up, still sitting on the ground, but admiring the beautiful vista at his dispense, of the sun rising over the banks of the river Mina in the background, and the rolling hills and dense thicket of broadleaf trees in the foreground. It was this same site that he was greeted with every morning, and yet he never grew tired of it.

He sprung up on his bare feet, dusted and stained black everywhere. He brushed some clinging branches and leaves off his canvas white tunic and trousers, but to little avail. He was covered in tree-litter and stains of dirt, from head to toe, even on his long, messy, straight strands of hair.

His stride was long, quiet, and confident as he made his way through the forest. He bypassed all the social norms and rituals usually performed upon wakeup, and walked as if one with the forest, graceful as a stag, nimble as a fox, and whistling as if a songbird. He traversed his away around every tree trunk, every hill, every brooke as if he knew the land by heart, like it was his home. Until finally he arrived at a small shaded clearing, with a small tree in the middle, standing out from the rest. It was filled with a small, round fruit, different from anything else grown in the area.

Upon approachment, the fruits were green and yellow in hue. It was the forbidden fruit in Nephite society, it was a Lemon tree. Casually, with no remorse, the man strides up to it, pushes some branches away, and inspects the fruits, rejecting them all until he finds one that he is pleased with. Round, yellow, with little blemishes or bruises. He yanks it downwards, removing it from its host, and removes his head from deep within the mess of leaves and branches. He looks at it, spinning it around his hand lightly, examining it, caressing it. He pulls out a small pocket knife from his waist, and slices it in half, sticking one half completely in his mouth, unnerved, and sucking it, lacking the usual response people have towards the sour taste of Lemons.

And on his way he goes once more, going over hill after hill, leaping over swirling streams, until he reaches a large hill, with a lone, sprawling oak tree on top. The man hikes up the hill, leaving back the shade and entering the domain of the sun once more. He reaches its thick, aged base, and grabbing the black cane given to him by the General Badias. He holds it crudely, as if alien and unaware of its true purpose. He lays it down  beside a patch of roughened, disturbed soil beneath the tree, and on top of it sets down the remaining half of the lemon. He discards the other half, near a large pile of several old, decomposing lemons, and begins digging, using his two hands to move the soil aside. Eventually, a tin box begins surfacing, enough to see the glimmer of its top, then enough to see the size, then enough to grab it. He lifts it out of the hole, placing it to the side, popping open its lid, exposing its contents to the elements.

Inside, a rustic, long barreled Iaret revolver, lain neatly on a bed of ammunitions. Rustic looking, its barrel a hardened, slick wood, and the rest of the gun, cleaned and well maintained, shined in the summer sun. Iaret revolvers are popular amongst the Zamanites and Nazr, the officer core, and are expensive pieces of equipment. He examines it closely, holding it as a mother holds an infant child. He runs hand along words engraved along the barrel, spaced evenly, slowly, as if deciphering each letter, “P..E...A….C...E...M...A...K...E...R” His hand moves from the engraving towards the butt of the revolver, and his dirty, stained nail runs along an artificial notch made into the wood. He shuts his eyes, bowing his head, as if reminiscing over a past incident.

He remains a minute in solace, his long strands of hair, falling to his shoulders, shielding his face from the harsh sun, now elevated in the sky. It is around 9, nearing the start of the work day. He pops open the gun barrel with a click, his eyes still closed, and begins to grab one brass bullet at a time, placing it in its chamber. When he is done, he clicks the chamber back into place, spinning it once for fun. Methodically, he moves the gun towards his back, and he places it on his belt. He begins methodically cleaning up,  putting the tin box back into its hole, brushing the dirt back into it, and patting it down with his callused hands. He grabs the lemon first, sticking it in his mouth, and then the cane, his dominant hand on the butt of the cane. He opens his eyes, and rises, his regular warm, cozy features everso present on his face. He begins descending the hill, sucking the life out of lemons, and heading towards the smoke of civilization, and away from the songs of the wilderness.

Jethro materialized from the woods, holding his cane as if a bat, or club, with authority. Hes greeted by a thousand or so soil-faced, poor farmers, clustered by families, the children sitting down, the men and women chatting and conversing. When Jethro appeared, the drones of the conversation died down, and everyone's eyes were on Jethro. He paid no mind, and strode to the front calmly, a massive, gray barn to his back. He let one end of the cane drop to the ground, kicking up some chunks of dirt. He begins pacing back and forth, examining each family, looking them up and down. Whispers, begin to assume control of the air, until he reaches the middle of the column, and stops, turning towards the crowd, and preparing to speak.

“We got work to do.” he declares. He quite effortlessly projects his voice so that it reaches the ears of all, and beyond. His soothing voice carried, and its volume was renowned. After a short pause, he begins to name off surnames of families, and assigning them to specific tasks and locations, barking orders to them much like a general orders his soldiers. “Hilak, tannery..” a cluster in the middle rises, and the mother and father begin ushering their children onwards. “Kames, Rakhor, wheat” on so and and so forth, until the space in front of him was cleared. He accomplished this seemingly at random, yet all the laborers knew it was not so, they were aware of his unorthodox methods, and why they worked. There was a reason as to why Jethro was always given the mandate in the Generals stead.

He was constantly going back and forth, from barn to barn, ensuring work got done, often times strict handed, yet he was efficient, well organized, and confident in what he did. The first day passed with ease, all quotas were satisfied, and Jethro went to rest against his tree soundly, and comforted.

The Caliphate contracts  the services of a famed engineer and owner of a large industrial manufacturer in the nation, Hiram Malek, to manufacture a cheap, efficient, semi-automatic rifle to outfit the pride of the nation- the army. Currently the military utilizes an outdated bolt-action, that has served the military well in its time, however with the changing times, upgrades are necessary.

The Free Junta

8MMCdGoOVkA6rlOoPZXLdt3I90J_vB13lVcUwT4XLQZ30rDI8AyZYseq4mNUvRHzFhPWuzTy38cw8Hp5dgHK4qalojpv5Wdl57X_AZyztgxqJrtSV7KjPhocSG5SytLlVyE7EV9i

Life under the Junta was relatively peaceful, the plains and dunes kept in check by the armed guard and small patrol fleet that had quickly been laid after the big three took control. Military service remained voluntary but offered great benefits with cheaper government mandated housing. After all there was plenty of
wide land available for construction and land-ownership.

The people were satisfied with the sweeping changes that the Junta had brought along within its first year and with no real roadblocks, they had much trust in the decisions of this powerful group. Recent trade income greatly bolstered their income and left little interest in electing a true government.

It would just be another year in the Junta.

Population: 40,000,000 Juntans

Nation’s Yearly Expenditure Budget: 65,800 Aurum, 4 Steel, 1 ASP, 1 NP, 6 AP

(40,000 Aurum) 4 Civilian districts are built in every city greatly expanding the breathing room of the free people… (16,000+)

(10,000 Aurum) 1 Trade Depot in the capital.

(10,000 Aurum) Another Vitra mine and refinery.

(5,000 Aurum) Development of more rails, roads, communication lines, the likes of development.

Research Expenditure: 3 Slots [6 Education]
[Slot 1] [Infantry Rifle Research] The R21 Bolt Action rifle had served the Juntan’s military since their arrival on the continent, it’s reliability never questioned until now. Many ideas began to circulate in the Defense Ministry, replace the bolt with a magazine-fed weapon and creating a mechanism to allow it to fire without manually chambering it. It will be dubbed the R31 Semi-Automatic Rifle.

[Slot 2] [Improving Explosives Yield] A few men had drunkenly thought of the idea to mix chemicals and other commodities with the intent to create a stronger explosive blast. Sobering up they awoke to their chicken scratch scribbles but the idea was agreed upon as worthy of further insight.

[Slot 3] [Designing stronger alloy] Steel armor had been tried and tested, its capabilities would certainly suffice for the near future but what about beyond that? They would need an alloy that would be even lighter than steel and quite possibly sustain even more damage.

Republic of Emmeria
1887

qaCpQfH.jpg
With the 1st Communist International having finished and the ECP returned home to Emmeria there return and public view was mixed. Emmeria being a place of free thought and open discourse many simply viewed it as just another ideology or a slightly radical group. However a man by the name of Arthur Cooke and his fellow members in what they declared the Emmerian National Party clashed openly in the streets of Gracemeria against the ECP before being broken up by local police. No was killed and injuries were limited to bruises and cuts.

Since then both sides have taken to publicly denouncing and attacking each other vocally in rallies and conferences. President Olson has denounced both parties for their acts of violence and claims that if either group truly believes in the Emmerian Value of Open Discourse that they wouldn’t stoop so low as to resort to violence.

Mighty, MIGHTY Carnelia faces off against the Klendari, while uppity nations show themselves all around it. The Sultan seems almost absent! He spends his days in quiet meetings with private advisors, and none can tell what he’s up to. The country is run by the national assembly and their appointed ministers...when they can avoid the monarch’s ire.

--------------

Foreign Policy

[Perzah] - The Carnelian National Assembly approves the lease, and rents begin to be sent over effective immediately.

[Baresh] - The Carnelians happily renew their alliance with the southern kingdom, pledging to defend them from Klendari aggression. They also match Bareshi investment into the new railroad, with 7,500 of their own shekels.

--------------

Expenditure

[158,150 Shekels]

[20,000 Shekels] - The navy purchases an upcoming ship design from Cumberland in advance, and eagerly awaits the chance to build it.

[19 Civilian Industry; 95,000 Shekels] - The marketplace continues its boom, and is on track to finally return to pre-war levels in a couple years.

[1 Town/1 Outpost; 8,000 Shekels] - A new town rises to prominence in the west! (Blue circle) Less notably, the Sultan orders another small outpost settled to the north, under his direct rule. (Orange circle)

[100 Fighters; 2 AP/6,000 Shekels] - News of the Klendari buying large quantities of fighters, along with a desire to make full use of the new FFAR, motivate the purchase of a new wing of ScaF-10 fighters from Scarab. The company’s stock price skyrockets!

Science

1. Hossani-Bradford - HB87 Submachine Gun

The Bradford family has long been a treasure to Carnelia, and now that the tortuous flak project is finally at an end, they and their engineers can dedicate their minds to what truly interests them - innovation. Years ago, Salah Bradford drew up a schematic for what he called a “machine pistol,” a self-defense weapon to be sold on the civilian market. Unfortunately, this promising product never went to market as the Sultan specifically requested that such destructive weapons not be made too available to his citizens. There was a war on, after all, and the government was wary of giving too many tools to dissidents within its borders.

Now though, Salah revisits the project. Aiming it for the military this time, he seems optimistic. After all, in a world where unarmored soldiers routinely fight in close quarters, there may be a place for lower-caliber weapons….if they can fire fast enough.

‘Darkness to Darkness’

For the first time since he was a little boy, the leader of the only philosopher-state in the world was in tears: a pathetic sight. The rabble-rousing of the Elder Cato and his minority, as well as his own younger brother’s combative tendencies, made the meeting a disaster before he could even unfold his dreams for re-invigorating the Aurelian state. Instead, the meeting had descended into a brawl. Since Councils were so rare, once every age, even, it was supposed to be a big statement. O, and how it was that! But a statement of failure, recklessness and factionalism – the very opposite virtues that Gracchus held dear from his close reading of Aurelius’ work, Res Publica. And the accusation of crypto-monarchism hit the staunch traditionalist deep. ‘I lurch from darkness to darkness...’ Gracchus lamented. His wife, seeing him in such a state, wrapped him up in a bubble of sweetness, but in truth her heart was cold. She is an actual monarchist: she wants her children by the Elder Gracchus to succeed him with supreme power – a power she intends to exercise, of course. Uttering sweet little consolations into her husband’s ear, she persuaded him to seek a personal reconciliation with Cato – and to cancel the Council, during which he had intended to ban Communism, democracy and monarchism as a matter of dogma. Numeria’s Machiavellian mind breathed a sigh of relief: her scheming for monarchy could yet continue.

The Elders of Cato and Gracchus were reconciled  after Gracchus promised to give Cato a second role to him. Cato apologised for his accusations. But the disaster of the Council still revealed that factionalism was internally tearing at this once-known beacon of stability. Could the Aurelian state survive the challenges of modernity, if even here councillors were throwing bricks at one another? Fortunately, the transcript remained secret...The average person had no idea any Council was even attempted. The business of government continued the next day, as if nothing had happened.

ACTIONS

-Lovely messages are sent to the Nazr Caliphate. The Elder Gracchus sends an essay, personally and beautifully written, explaining how similar their philosophies and manners are. Offers are made for a trade partnership.

-Trade offers are alike send to The Grand Principality of Cumberland and The Republic of Jurevin.

-1 Vitramite mine and 1 refinery are built.

-Secret action.

-1,000 gold kept in the treasury as surplus.

-The first two professional football clubs, Arpinium Rovers and Arpinium United, come into existence...

-Arpinium begins to research radio technology as a widespread form of long-distance communication.

-She only begins to look into better techniques for mining and refining Vitramite.

-And, finally, antibiotics.
