Socialist People’s Republic of Gwangnan

Across the entire nation turmoil and chaos reign supreme. Rice-fields burn and and road networks are destroyed. Through a series of events an all out war has been reached. And now the people are stirring, to resists the shackles meant to be placed on them. Many incursions litter the land, but the people of Gwangnan continue to resist. The nation has reached a state of total war.

STEEL HORIZON

1890

Gas. Fire. Steel. Death. This is the maelstrom that swallows Emmerian cities whole, as Kawakami Adachi fights a brutal war of occupation in the Emmerian lowlands. Ironically, in his homeland, a similar war is being fought from mountain pass to mountain pass, as Praharavkan and Valdenian soldiers advance through the Gwangnan heartlands, all the while contending with the savage efficiency of Lieutenant-General Bijan Khoshbackt and his Kandistani Mountaineer-Commando Corps. In a few short months of combat, this tempestuous conflict has claimed the lives of nearly 300’000, and it would seem that it will get worse before it gets better.

The strain the conflict has placed upon world peace is immeasurable, as surrounding powers take note and make their own plans. Two months into the Gwangan-Emmerian War, Modevian forces begin to assemble along the border of the Vernan SSR. It is said that Enrico Reinzo had stamped the order to begin Operation Skyfall when he received a call from Prime Minister Vagn Axelson of Volta-Solvan. What Axelson said to Reinzo is not apparent, but the Great Powers of the Northern continent - the CNSR, Greater Modevia, the CSAC and Volta-Solvan met in a very secret and private conference and, after much deliberation, Vagn Axelson makes a speech that is played over millions of radios. He declares;

“I have just come from a conference with the other Great Powers of this continent. While there is little that can be done in Gwangnan and Emmeria, we have come to an agreement. There will be no conflict between us. There will be peace, relatively speaking, in our time.”

Still, no amount of negotiation will change the fact that this is a rare opportunity to fight a proxy war, and both sides begin to fill their respective ideological partners with arms, funds and volunteers.

Despite the talk of peace, Volta-Solvan increases military spending this year. A further three Battlecruisers and an additional 2 dreadnoughts are laid down, further securing Volta-Solvan naval supremacy. Modevia commissions another dreadnought and half a dozen destroyers, but most of the annual military funding goes towards the army this year. The CSAC continues to develop a large, short range torpedo attack flotilla, while the CNSR lays down two battlecruisers. The Klendari, meanwhile, construct a dreadnought and a battlecruiser.

In the Klendari Sultanate, Sultan Esmina III has perished, to a long, wasting illness. His son, Crown Prince Altpekin, ascends to the Dawn Throne as Sultan Selim VI. Dignitaries from across the world are invited, but Selim seems to hold little love for the Carnelians and he addresses the invitation to Abdul of Carnelia not as a Monarch to a Monarch, but as a Monarch to a Vassal. Regardless of his abrasive ways, Selim cannot be called ineffective. For years he has ruled the Sultanate as Prince Regent, and under him the Klendari have built a powerful modern army and a magnificent navy. As further testimony to the bright future of Selim’s rule, a formal alliance with Perzah is announced this year, cemented by the marriage of Selim’s sister - Abaza - to the Shah Yubiq Khan.

Grenheim and Estfeld, long rivals, continue their bitter ways as both seek to find passage to the new world, in search of wealth and prosperity. Trading companies from both countries take to sinking their rivals with a plethora of inventive and violent tactics.

Pozharin, ever unstable, seems to settle down for this year, as various factions glare at each other across the barricades. Most of the army and navy falls under Tsar Laurent’s Monarchists, but separtist movements in the undeveloped north - led by Vasily Gredenko - are gaining traction, while Vladimir Popov leads democratic and republican marches through the streets of the capital. These protests are careful to steer clear of the Tsar’s palace, however, for they well remember Bloody Sunday. The Pozharin Communist Party, under Alexei Kuznetsov, are greatly weakened by their failed coup some years previously, but even so, they are very active along the eastern border, where CNSR corps seem to be ammassing in greater numbers than usual these days.

ARCHDUCHY OF ANDROS-BELLICA

Briartown quickly becomes a teeming centre of culture, as actors and directors from the world over flock to what seems set to become the heart of a new world of film. The town crawls with modern, government sponsored innovations, and the End of an Era begins production with an enormous cast of primary actors and supporting actors. Production will be finished in 1892.

Bellican fortifications continue to be constructed, and a solid line of rudimentary bunkers will be in place by 1892. Military experts cannot, however, help but look over the border at the quickly assembling Steel Horizon - a maze of steel, concrete, rails and artillery of a vast and intricate design - and feel threatened.

TRADE LEAGUE OF GALLIAN

Gallian’s days as a peaceful trade league seem limited, as they launch into an intervention in Gwangnan.

COMMONWEALTH OF VALDEK

The Valdenian West Koibita Company takes over the government’s prerogative of subjugating the natives. A largely undisclosed and secret deal with the Volta-Solvan Western Skies Trading Company, however, sees vast amounts of profit as the company begins to exploit the cheap labour and the vast source of illegal opium and heroine. +8000G per turn.

Volta-Solvan is only too happy to pursue better relations.

 VENZEATIC LEAGUE

The atrocities in Vulcan bring international condemnation upon Gwangnan, and many nations denounce the Gwangnanese for their cruelty, especially due to Venzeatic propaganda. The CNSR and the Vernan SSR, however, seem completely unconcerned by such violence, and the tapes are mailed straight back.

GRAND DUCHY OF PRAHARAVKA

With Praha swanning into Gwangdon unchallenged, they capture a rather interesting character. Ienaga Toyotomi claims to be a distant relative of the last Emperor of Gwangnan, and presents himself as the last living claimant to the throne.

EMPIRE OF SYULLIN

Diplomatic approaches continue. (Discord)

The Corvettes stumble across explorers coming from the south. (You meet Samo)

GRAND PRINCIPALITY OF CUMBERLAND

Simmerson builds his line, constructing a vast series of fortifications, as the Red Army across the way constructs the Steel Horizon. 1896 completion.

The Grand Prince has a mixed reception. In some areas, he is greeted by with cheers and delight. In others, the workers throw buckets of **** at him. One man rushes the Prince with a hammer, only to be shot - an action which nearly results in another riot.

Forth go the explorers. (Discord)

Another conference! (Discord)

TIERRA ROJA

Phillip’s efforts finally come to fruition, and Tierra Roja has successfully reformed its education system to be one of the best in the world. (+1 research slot.)

CARNELIAN SULTANATE

Perhaps urged on by the Klendari, or perhaps simply outraged by continued Carnelian expansionism, Carnelian settlers are seen off - at Perzahan gunpoint.

Erdemir gladly accepts. (Discord)

Unfortunately, the CSAC has something of a need for her tanks are at present, but the CSAC are remarkably amicable towards the Carnelians, and request to establish a proper embassy.

THE KARAKHWA

Completion of Yotal’s Throne’s defenses are estimated to be complete for 1894.

Shadow of the Day leads his ships against the Valdenians, and manages to secure 5000G, at the price of 2 corvettes.

Cockroach that Runs turns pirate these days, and begins constant targeting of Klendari air traffic. After a brutal season of raiding, the Karakhwa come away with 5000G and 4 freighters. They encountered few warships over the year.

REPUBLIC OF EMMERIA

Antibiotics will be available for 1897.

The war rages on in Emmeria, and the Emmerians have struggled hard over the last year. However, from Grenheim and Estfeld, the Emmerians receive a volunteer brigade of infantry, while another brigade of volunteers comes from Volta-Solvan. 2 T1 Conscript Infantry brigades.

PHILOSOPHATE OF ARPINIUM

Tanks will be ready by 1893.

No headway is made on better hulls.

Aurealian salesmanship is put to the test, and they quickly find a huge market for the drug across the world, especially with such a violent conflict raging. +10’000G per turn (until I say otherwise)

PEOPLES’ REPUBLIC OF GWANGNAN

With the war raging, both the CNSR and the CSAC - despite agreements not to begin a full scale war - opt to use Gwangnan as their proxy, and 3 T3 Regular Infantry Brigades arrive to support the Gwangnanese, under the banner of the International Brigades.

1891

The news of foreigners stranding on the shores of Syullin, as well as the encounter with another foreign vessel in the high skies, ripple through the upper ranks of the government of the Empire. Caution is important when dealing with these foreigners, as they may easily prove to be capable foes, but resourceful friends too. Syullin itself was not prepared for a potential conflict, considering the ambition of the Emperor was to bring the realms of his home continent into his sphere. For such, diplomacy must be conducted and formal ties must be established. A step at a time, on many different paths. May the spirits guide the Emperor Jun-Seo Sule-Bahk to be righteous in the coming years of his reign, wise in his decisions and kind to those who support him, but also those who oppose him.

Actions:

The new Emperor Jun-Seo continues his policy of industrial development, in order to increase the GNP, as well as the resources available to all areas of the nation. Similar to last year the improvements are as follows:

The rail system needs to brought to full speed, in line with the newly started development of the new train models, he wants that all cities and towns have full access to the network. Furthermore, the roads need to improved and paved accordingly, to allow for easier traffic, motorized or not, and wide enough so they may avoid eachother and not clog up the roads. (Another -20,000 Syl into Infrastructure)

Several cities receive industrial complexes that are to produce commodities and goods for the civilian populace. An increased satisfaction should boost the market, with people willing to spend more money, they may earn in the very same factories in the first place. (-20,000 Syl, 4 CIs)

The Lord Dedicant orders the recruitment of two new companies of Infantry to bolster the ground strength of the Empire. Recruited from the substantial pool of volunteers who pursue a career in military, this is not really a force of conscripts. (-2 AP, -14,000 Syl for 2 T3 Infantry companies at 10,000 men)

The forges of the Empire bring a new whole array of field guns to the armed forces, who might be in dire need for stronger firepower in the future. (-2 AP, -6,000 Syl for 100 Field Artillery)

Lastly, a squadron of fighters gets constructed, with pilots being trained, to have something lighter in the skies than just the Mae-class corvettes. They shall be piloting the Mogi-Type-A, a recent fighter development that has proven to be reliable and long lasting, in the skies, though it’s armament is rather limited. (-2 AP, -6,000 Syl for 100 Fighters)

The remainder of the available funds are being allocated to the improvement of the train engine, hand in hand with the ongoing infrastructural investments. (-12,000 Syl to the train project, valued at 13,200 Syl)

Continued diplomatic outreach to the neighbours as well as the newly met foreigners from abroad. (MOD)

Assessment of the current research projects. (MOD)

The remaining resources are being stockpiled. (2 ASP, 2 S, 3 VR)

Research (Passive 3 slots + 10% bonus):

The old Longhorn Rifles brought over (with schematics even, probably to be able to reproduce them as needed) from the Old World have proved outdated and very clunky. Whilst there was originally no need to improve upon the ol’ reliable, the Dedicants deem it suitable to upgrade the general equipment, introduce standardization and allow for easier construction of infantry rifles, as the Longhorns were mostly made by hand, with only a few steps automated. They wish to call it the Bohoja Rifle.

(Started 1889, a new bolt-action rifle to replace the predecessor from the Old World, due in 1891)

The improvement of agricultural methods has been a longstanding issue with the Empire. Whilst mostly forgotten due to other more important “concerns”, a new wind to push projects regarding optimal crop rotation and soil retention has come from nobody else than the Empress herself. Having a garden herself, where she grows vegetables for her family and most importantly for her dying husband, it is a very personal topic to her. By her claims, good soil gives good crops. Good crops are inhabitated by good spirits that give good life essence to the people, to prolong their lives and increase their fertility, making them strong and healthy as a whole.

(Re-started 1889, after six years of “pause”, due in 1897)

In order to not only increase the capacity, but also the speed of transportation for wares and people across the growing Empire of Syullin, a new train engine is to replace the old fashioned coal powered models. Vitramite comes in mind as a potential candidate.

(Started 1889, due in 1895)

Communication over long distances proves to be still difficult. The wiring is often faulty and outdated, the cables not always capable of resisting the unregular electricity from the power grids of the nation. So, Project Bosang, is meant to streamline and optimize these grids of the nation. Starting with Voltage, Ampere, et cetera, they are to eliminate and unify the methods of generating power as well as bringing them up to par, so that the cables (and other devices of course) may not suffer the same issues they had in the past.

(On Hold)

The Archduchy of Andros-Bellica

as it was the Year of Our Lord, 1891

-+-

“Good Count, let us be clear; the return of Vosterburg is a splendid achievement; but not nearly so as Rienzo’s ousting of the scourge to our north. No, no, it was a triumph; do not mistake the new for the dangerous, it is simply a change...The Free Provinces were no better! Look at how that ‘Republic’ failed, Petyr, and see how we are now treated. It is the Nikstranan...no, if you allow yourself to believe the Communists, those vile beasts with their flagrant atrocities...If you believe them the same as the Modevians, you are most utterly mistaken. In any case, how was the trip from Andreapol, my dear? The roads as squalid as ever?”

A cold evening in Bellograd set the backdrop to Anatoly’s wedding banquet, in which his new bride eagerly greeted her guests. Anastasia, who spoke Bellican (which had always been quite mode in Pozharin’s inner circles as a third or perhaps fourth language, but in this case was learned as her second, and indeed it showed in her relative fluency), was here known as Anastasia vi Laurnovich, but perhaps in Pozhar better remembered as the first Princess Laurentovna, and while the arriving Androsian and Bellican nobility showed her all the honors of a princess, their generally quick aversion and masked condescension were not lost on her. Travelling the upper circles of society as she did, it was mandatory to be quick on the uptake; in this case, far less skill than hers was necessary, for all knew the losses of the Pozhar Tsar to the governments of lesser folk. Her family’s ill fortune took little away from her grace, though, and from the prestige viewed from such a match - seeing her stunning red locks frame a freckled face as pale as moonlight, and her wonderful figure accentuated by a bejeweled gown of white and sash of blue, one might have forgotten themselves for a moment, and others would be wholly understanding; in the courts of the old world, after all, her beauty had been made quite famous, and it was viewed as Anatoly’s good fortune to have been matched with such a woman.

In Bellica, moreso perhaps than in Andros, the rights of the highest nobles had been preserved half a millenia; the House vi Androssov ruling with grace much of that era, and in past marrying wide and far among the noblesse of the Arissian continent (the name of which, in Bellican, had once been understood to mean ‘old’, but over time the word had fallen out of favor in common speech and eventually came only to be the name of the land). The Count Andrograd, and now also Vosterburg, was the primary inheritor to this great wealth of history, and of the somewhat lesser wealth of land. He was a young man, and was filled too with the self-assurance that came with that youth, but also of that which came from being the center of one’s social circle. Anatoly Viktor, after all, was as handsome as Anastasia was beautiful, cutting a dashing figure in his dark gray Fleet uniform and his blonde hair slicked back, and perhaps the only flaw in his stature was his rather average height, which, when standing next to his wife, did not seem so much of a flaw at all. The eldest son had long been the Archduke’s easy favorite, being granted the largest estates to practice ruling and found the best match, and for whose wedding was given a stipend of ten thousand Andro-Bellican Marks with which to develop his new estates, as well as a set of grand jewels and dresses to keep well the honor of his Pozhar wife, who the aged Archduke thought of as a daughter, and thought to make her new living circumstances in Bellica so grandiose as to forget the Tsardom, or at least not reference it as higher than the Archduchy.

The conversation at hand, and the one in which Anastasia, with her fluent but perhaps accented Bellican (speculated to be because Anatoly’s third language was Pozhar, and so in their home court she did not speak the greater tongue, though more likely simply because she had arrived only a year ago), was so vehemently arguing, was with Anatoly’s youngest brother, the good Count Petyr of Andreapol, which was not much of a pol at all but more of a castle-town of eras past. Among the combined royalty residing in Bellograd, the oldest was of course Anatoly, who was twenty, and less than half his grandfather’s age, and the second oldest Cassian Markus, the middle child of the Androssovs, who was as average in appearance as he was short and dumb (and short and dumb he was). Third was Anastasia, of eighteen well-celebrated years, and fourth was Petyr, who was seventeen, and possessed much of the same self-assuredness of Anatoly, but less than half his demeanor; for, at an age when boys should have already become men, he was both more stout than his brother and had half his natural appearance, with an ugly grimace of a grin and pinched-together eyes; and, should that not have been enough, he was able barely to carry his own weight. Whilst he lacked in all measures, he was still Anatoly’s brother, and Anastasia, being both a good hostess and now his sister-in-law, had taken it upon herself to ingratiate herself with the family. Petyr had, upon his entrance, greeted her with all the proper formalities, and his brother similarly, but soon grew weary of the event, and accosted the young woman on the fate of the Laurnovichs, a difficult subject to speak on for all nobility, and a faux pas greatly unexpected from an Androssov. She had taken it in stride, at first, before Petyr began to declaim the repurchase of Vosterburg; that, and his latter arguments as to the nature of the social contract and the rights of the people, and then his talks of loosening the Crown’s restrictions upon the Lyovdiet, and indeed how the Modevians were not their natural allies against the red hordes but instead an even greater threat, had drawn Anastasia into a rather easily expected fury given her family’s war against said hordes; this, of course, having ended in her spiteful reminder to the young princeling that he had been sent to moderate a rather ugly, decrepit old keep in the Androsian countryside, far from any politics of import.

He rather crudely bowed to her, then, and while doing so his eyes latched upon her generous figure until Anatoly stepped before him, staring with great threat at the family’s dishonored child. Petyr then awkwardly took his leave of the banquet, assuring with all proper formality that he would have attended the ball afterwards, but he was in desperate need by his local regiment in the controlling of the only half-freed serfdom of Andreapol, which was deemed an acceptable excuse by present company (for indeed, much of Andros was still undergoing reform, for there was far lesser crown authority in that territory, and whilst the third-generation ancestor of the current archduke had demanded the release of all serfs, the most impoverished of Androsians had generally returned to a similar role). Having rid himself of his troublesome brother, Anatoly turned then to his new bride, and they shared a few words in hushed whispers, which the lesser nobility took to be promises of gifts and future balls, or perhaps a state visit to her homeland in Pozharin, for her beautiful visage cooled, and she stared quietly into his eyes before returning to greeting the guests.

The procession continued, and so too did the general chatter of the hall as it gradually filled; the Kaltzbergs and the younger Bellograd of Salovo, esteemed brothers-in-arms of the good Archduke and well-remembered veterans of the Bellican Offensive, paid their homage, leaving gifts in the now-quickly accumulating pile, and saying apologies for General Fieldmarshal vi Bellograd and Fieldmarshal Linden’s absence, for after all they were leading the buildup of defenses along the border, but to please give his lord father their best wishes, and have a wonderful evening. He responded in kind, for after all it was his honor to host the two marshals, and that they needn’t worry about their good commanders’ absences, and how banquets are mere formalities in today’s day and age anyways, and how much he would appreciate the appearance of their lovely daughters at the coming nights’ ball, and how much Cassian Markus might especially enjoy mingling with the young Lady Kaltzberg (who, against Cassian’s wishes, was currently the highest pick for his future bride, for while she was rather plain her family was also rather rich), and indeed how Maria (Petyr’s twin sister, who, while they bore a striking resemblance, was at least passable in appearance, and far less prone to failures in etiquette) so longed to see her good friends once more as well. As the two marshals smiled, and nodded their confirmations, and the two newlyweds smiled and returned their gestures, and then the marshals saluted the Count Andrograd and took their assigned seats, and the banquet so began.

YEAR IN REVIEW, 1891

-+-

3 Jan. | The Ministry of Commerce continues their plan of capital improvement; in Bellograd, they build two more entertainment-oriented civilian industry distrits, likely to ensure a continuing influx of such talents. The majority of their budget, however, flows elsewhere; their eyes, as with all in Andros-Bellica, are upon the newly reacquired Vosterburg, known internationally as the Bellic Strip. There, they build both a commercial district and a trade depot, which is made known to be for the purpose of ensuring stable flows of goods to and from Modevia. Nationally, the airshipyards begin to churn, but not for Bellican use – it soon becomes obvious that they’ve been leased to Modevia for the year!

5 Jan. | In celebration of their young heir’s marriage to the Pozhar Princess Anastasia, Andros-Bellica hosts an incredible set of celebrations among its nobility, including all the usual festivities like balls and banquets. At the end, Archduke Karl Fredrik presents his new daughter-in-law with a beautiful set of jewelry and gowns, and his son with the territory of Vosterburg. In total, the festivities and gift to Anastasia are said to cost a whopping 2.000 ABM.

16 Jan. | The production to start this year is named Beyond Nikstrana, and is the first of a set of movies rumored to be requested by the Modevian dictator. It is to be a romance set in the newly-Communist USP in the days after the end of the Great War. The main character, a Nikstranan, was a young mistress of a old family of the Republic, and the love of her life a minor Pozhar nobleman. It shows the brutality of the Communists, though somewhat lessened (likely to prevent censorship from younger viewers), and of her harrowing escape from that evil regime!

20 Feb. | Now able to connect their borders, the buildup of Andros-Bellica’s border continues – this year, they pay an additional 5.000 ABM and dedicate a vast majority of their military capacity [15 AP] to its construction and upgrading the current line, building stationary artillery, preparing reinforced concrete, and setting up barbed wire lines. It is called, as time wears on and its strength increases, the Vosterburg Line. [Total: 10.000 ABM, 15 AP]

21 Apr. | Four brigades of alpine-trained Light Infantry are raised from across Andros’ mountainous territory to defend the fatherland!

8 Jun. | The department of education’s research projects beginning this year are announced, being forays into mechanization and the improvement of steel mills, the nation obviously hoping to improve its output.

20 Aug. | 20.000 ABM is written off the books.

1891 The Karakhwa

A burning freighter spiralled past the bridge, trailing debris and sailors. Their screams were almost audible through the thick, reinforced glass of the Red Petal’s bridge. Shadow of the Day could almost imagine them, flames wreathing their bodies in agony, charring their skin, bubbling lips throwing out their last, boiling breaths in hopeless wails of pain. His hand twitched around his cane, jerking it around the floor with a skittering sound.

ov4OhpB.png

He licked his lips, sloughing off his jaw like rubber and took a wet, mucus-filled breath. It rattled through his lungs like a plug being pulled from a tub. “Bring him in,” he rasped.

One of the braves near him looked at him for a brief moment. Their eyes met, and Shadow of the Day saw disgust in the mans face. He snarled and rapped his cane on the floor. “Go.”

“Yes, Ship-Father,” said the man, nodding and leaving the bridge.

A moment later, he re-appeared, leading a procession of a dozen braves, all of them liberally covered in blood. Shadow of the Day’s eyes darted down to the tomahawks at their sides. Each one was covered in gore. These men moved upon the deck with a sinuous grace, so perfectly balanced and poised that it seemed like they were about to pounce at any moment.

8027de4f1ed75d7354da341972d9f98e.jpg

“My Vultures return,” said Shadow of the Day, beckoning them forward. “With a gift.” He chuckled to himself, his laugh echoing through the silent room like a wet boot being squished into mud.

“He is the only surviving officer. The others died,” said the lead Vulture, his eyes unflinching, staring straight into Shadow of the Day’s. They were like two slivers of flint, grey and flat.

“Good.” Shadow of the Day motioned with one gloved hand and the group of Wind Devils parted, revealing a shabby looking man with a rough sailors beard and a thread-bare, blood-stained Valdish merchant navy uniform. He had a massive bruise over one eyes, but the last remaining one glared at Shadow of the Day with enough hatred for two. “Welcome,” said Shadow of the Day. “I hope you find our hospitality to you-” he bent over, his lungs burning as he hacked and coughed until a wedge of phlegm pushed into his mouth like a slug. He lifted his veil and hacked it onto the ground.

With a growl, he stood up straight. “Your name?”

“Captain Tuvick of the Valdek Merchant Navy,” said the man.

“Tuvick,” said Shadow of the Day. He took a limping step forward and looked down at the man, leaning heavily on his cane. “I’m sorry for your men, I’m sure they fought bravely.”

“We are an unarmed freighter,” ground out Tuvick. “There was no fight, you gutless coward.”

“Of course, of course,” said Shadow of the Day. “Your soldiers offer no better a fight.” He paused and coughed, wincing beneath his veil. “It is hard to ah… tell the difference.”

“The relief fleet will judge your fate,” said Tuvick, crossing his corded arms over his chest.

“Relief fleet or not, surely you must realize, you are doomed,” replied Shadow of the Day.

“Better to die now, than turn into a twisted creature like you,” said Tuvick. He hawked and spat his wad of tobacco onto Shadow of the Day’s black robes.

It clung to them and Shadow of the Day howled with anger, lifting his can and smashing it down on Tuvick’s head. The first blow stunned him, but he remained standing. The second one brought him to his knees, blood leaking from a gash on his head. The third put him on all fours. By the time Shadow of the Day was done, his face was a bloody, ruined pulp. Shards of broken bone stuck to Shadow of the Day’s cane like nails in a club.

He gasped and wheezed, his lungs struggling furiously to fill as he stumbled away from the corpse and collapsed into his captains chair. He grasped his cane heavily, the shattered bone cutting into his gloved hand.

“Wrap this up. We are leaving,” he hissed, before collapsing into a fit of coughs.

The hidden journal of Kiss the Sun, Ship-Father under the Warchief Cloud Hunter, known to her new people as Shà Hashtaal, Goddess of the Storms.

Ncma8KQ.jpg

1st of June

I fear that I may have led my Warchief down a path from whence I cannot lift her. Day by day, she spirals deeper into madness. The braves follow her with the blind adoration of those who see naught but glory in her eyes. But I see the madness, the will to see all bow before her for no other reason than to be the only one standing.

10th of June

The colony goes well, but the slaves suffer. I try to relieve their pain where I can, but Cloud Hunter rarely lets me from her sight. She heeds my words, for now. Yesterday, she ordered the structuring of her nation. I aided in this. I am proud of it. It goes as such:

The Throne of Thunder shall act as the centerpoint of the People. The chiefs must gather twice a year. They are to be seated in two curved lines, with Cloud Hunter at the end on one side, and an open doorway into the sky on the other.

Those in favor will be seated closest to her, and receive the best weapons, the best roaming grounds. They also receive priority in all matters. They are her sycophants, the fake loyalists.

Those who have accrued her ire see themselves sitting at the very back. It is their people who have it the worst. Many slaves are taken from their ranks.

7th of August

Today, Cloud Hunter had the first human sacrifice in her name. A boy, a slave who had stolen, was brought to an altar below the Throne of Thunder. His heart was torn from his chest and the blood squeezed onto his face as he died. She watched from the railing of the Storm Chaser, smiling the whole time.

8th of August

Another sacrifice. She has mandated that they be done every morning in her honor, with wrongdoers taken from the worst of the tribes.

10th of October

I no longer see her without her facepaint of gold and white. Her eyes seem to burn with a vigorous cruelty of the likes that I have not seen in years. She is always surrounded by her priests now, young girls who attend to her every need, picked from the most loyal of the children below. They are everywhere, I hear the braves call them the Golden Eyes.

30th of December

No time to write. The Golden Eyes watch everything. I saw two little girls have a slave executed for cursing Shà Hashtaal. She rarely speaks to me anymore.

 All must bow.

Instead, the raids are led by Chases Fire, the Iron Dog and loyalist to Heart of Iron. He leads his group with a brutal, rugged efficiency born of a long lifetime of looting, finally at the prow of his new Battlecruiser, the Spirit of Blood. Once again, he aims to capture, plunder and kill. (1 Battlecruiser, the Spirit of Blood, captured from the Cumberlandish people. 1 Veteran cruiser, 1 Yotal’s Hawks, 2 Destroyers, 7 corvettes.)

>This year, Shadow of the Day turns away from Valdek. Instead, he focuses his attention on Ozan, isolated as it is from its benefactor. After some initial prodding raids to test their air capabilities, he begins raiding them, searching for weak-points to exploit, so as to hit their industry, railways and cities. (1 Battlecruiser, The Barbed Vulture, 1 veteran cruiser, the Red Petal , 1 Yotal’s Hawk, 1 regular cruiser, 2 Destroyers, 5 corvettes.)

>Solomon follows the raids against Valdek, and keeps an ear open for any murmur of strange folk and red orbs...

>Cloud Hunter continues to spiral into madness. (See RP) Concretely, she sends her new people in search of rare goods, potential places to raid and anything of interest in the surrounding area.

THE EMPIRE OF VALDEK

Year 1891

_________________________________________________

The Gunship’s vitarium core hummed as the light vessel tore through the weathered mountains west of Pracht. A thick fog, penetrated only by the intense beam of a single light, originating just below the cockpit of the vessel. Within, silence. The crew, woefully understaffed by normal standards, performed their various duties. A green light accompanied by a short transmission from the site signaled they were cleared for landing. The Kell slowed, descending, before coming to a complete halt. The sound of hydraulic landing struts being deployed, followed by an abrupt landing.

Yovek flipped an array of switches, levers, and dials, before finally the hum of the Vitarium Core subsided and eventually stopped. He rose, walking through the bridge. “Torek, come.” the Ship-Master called to one of his crew members as he retrieved a large pistol and a stout ‘Kevik’ rifle.

As he stepped onto the landing platform, the thick smell of smoke hung in the cool, misty evening. Scattered throughout the platform, members of Yovek’s crew had begun to unload cargo, perform much needed maintenance, purchase supplies. The complex surrounding the ship was built mostly of white and grayish stone, in a traditional Valdenian style, the roofs were mostly flat, and the buildings much wider than tall. Slim and narrow windows jutted out seemingly at random, adding to the run-down appearance of the complex. Above the roofs, faint pillars of smoke rose from the east end of the complex. While the crew slowly filtered out, three Yetsin officials approached the platform, the lead figure flanked by two others bearing a pistol and crude sub-machine gun respectively.

The official approached Yovek, his hands stuffed into a thick jacket, bearing the easily recognizable insignia of the Yetsin. “I was told, that you had a variety of deliveries for Perak?”  Yovek nodded, “I will have them unloaded shortly. These individuals are rather nasty. The ordeal caused my ship extensive damages…” He turned to one of the crew members with a nod, before pressing onward with Torek, leaving the officials to return to their posts, and his crew to finish their jobs.

----

The ceiling lights hummed obnoxiously as the two men sat. The room itself of oval in shape, worn stone walls marked with bullet holes and gashes surrounded them. A large, oval desk sat square in the middle, with a large tower of safes and other assorted lock boxes rising behind it. The man sitting at the desk was clad in common attire, aside for the large Yetsin insignia often seems throughout the complex.

“They’ve all been gathered?” He asked, in a hoarse voice. “Indeed, troublesome, but complete… I have heard rumors that the Yetsin have been lacking in revenue?” Yovek replied, as he sat in the squat chair, cradling his longrifle on his lap. “This is true.. Business has been, slow, since the Restoration. Smugglers disappear, strange men with even stranger rumors accompanying them..” “The Ketch-Master, is not pleased with these state of affairs. He has ordered me to collect overdue payments…” “I.. You will not find any here, but assure Kovik he will be paid! A contact has obtained the location of an Old War storehouse, untouched.. You know as well as I d-“ “where is it?”

GRAND DUCHY OF PRAHARAVKA

ROLEPLAY

Poludnitsev grabbed the handle of the commander’s hatch, opening the tank to the outside world. He sighed, climbing out the turret and rested atop the vehicle. In his periphery was a serene, lush valley - one that had thus far been untouched by the fighting. White-capped mountains with coniferous trees scaling the sides, shrouded by large white clouds. The sun shone through, gracing the Praharavkan men with their warmth, often not felt in the far northern reaches of their homeland. It was unsettling. All of it. Aside from the blunder at Edo, there had been no real fighting. After being granted the honor of being a leading element of Fyodorovich’s Armored Fist, he did not expect to see so little combat. He shook his head, “So much for a war.” he said subconsciously.

“Chin up, comrade Commander. I’m sure we’ll see our share of it in the coming weeks.” called Ludomir from the front, driver’s port swung wide open.

“If they don’t surrender by then.” he tapped his fingers upon steel.

Baranovich interjected, “Why have we seen so little resistance?”

“Maybe its bait.” called Ludomir with a strain in his voice, hauling himself out the front of the vehicle, relieved to set his boots on firm ground and soil. For a moment he stumbled, as if he had lost his land legs. Composing himself, he patted down his pockets, and looked eager to take a walk.

Poludnitsev squinted, “You don’t ensnare your foe by ceding half a country.”

“I hear they’re gearing up for a large offensive.” Bogdan said, seemingly appearing from thin air, cradling a 76mm shell in his arms. “Now uh, if you’ll excuse me.” he said, making for the tank.

Poludnitsev took that as his cue to exit, hopping off the tank while Bogdan climbed it and joining Ludomir. “Best keep our wits about us then.”

“Aye, we ought to keep our guard up. I hear to the North, resistance is fierce. Our boys are squaring up against the Kandistani Mountain Commandos.” said Ludomir.

“Pfft.” Baranovich scoffed, joining the two on the ground.

“Apparently one of their marksmen shot General Kolodkin right through the skull.” Ludomir continued.

“Such is the price of war.” Poludnitsev murmured, then eager to change the topic of conversation, “Alright, I’m starving, enough of this. Bogdan, we’ll be at the mess if you care to join us.” he then called out.

From inside was a dull thud, followed by a hollow, “Ow.” no doubt, Bogdan hit his head on the roof. “Yeah I’ll be there.” he replied, rubbing his scalp, cursing himself under his breath, gazing down the armor piercing shell he had so recklessly dropped and lay propped upon the floor of the tank, “I’m more a danger to myself than are these Gwangnanese.”

Research 1: Heavy Tank, LV-5 (Complete in ‘93)

A conflict of interest between the Leg Infantry and the Armored Cavalry! While the Armored Cavalry requests additional funds for rapid and lightweight cavalry tanks to keep pace with the motorized troops, the Infantry fears that such vehicles will be unable to weather the modern weapons of war. The War Ministry, for now, agrees with the Foot, allocating resources to the R&D of a next-gen heavy tank!

Roleplay:

The Year for the political establishment was one of relative calm, the Government focused almost purely on economic growth, though allowing Military spending to surpass merely the upkeep required to maintain the Military. Tanks are built for the Army and a brand new Randgritz is laid down among many other foreign vessels that are being built by the industrious shipbuilders of the nation.

Across the Ocean the explorers of Cumberland come across another continent, yet another apparent new world to be discovered and established contact with the nations of this land. It is ordered to establish outposts in this land to eventually become colonies of a new overseas Empire, a small start but a hopeful one at that.

Actions

Twenty Four civilian factories would be set up in the following year as part of the economic liberalisation program. (120,000)

With the leftover shipyard space the Navy orders a Randgritz Class Battlecruiser to be laid down, to be fully armoured. (5ASP, 20,000)

The Steel Industry receives further investment this year, with a further four mills planned. (10,000)

Airshipyards are once more expanded by three. (30,000)

Heavy Industry is also expanded upon with five new Heavy Industry Factories planned. (37,500)

[Redacted] (20,000)

Research into Dreadnoughts continues. (1RP)

Two Outposts are constructed in unclaimed land in the Eastern New World. https://i.gyazo.com/7361891cc4965b2f46560066eeacccf4.png  (5,000)

Three Armoured Brigades of Medium Tanks are to be constructed this year. (9AP, 24,000)

A Defensive Pact with the Archduchy of Andros-Bellica, Grenheim and Estfield would be signed in Randgritz, dubbed “The Randgritz Pact” it details a defensive pact against Communism, for Cumberland to mediate the disputes between the rivals of Estfield and Grenheim and levels of Military cooperation between all states involved, including army exercises and coordination along the Simmerson Line. The Carnelian Sultanate

Hi6K1ssP-hQGAS0e8RsF2IPsCm7pef6oD-C2KZQxUOcZbEL8j3ZPACaPpwsbbcvcaPvQ5sX1KubJsZxzQnSuQ-H19kWPwpxJiJPqMYQZla8ja7rZQXNxlMlnVNaDxNlS8Vy5adra

“I, Abdul, Sultan of the Carnelian Coast and protector of its people, do hereby grant stewardship of Hossani Island and its people in its entirety to the Hossani-Bradford corporation, and do delegate the rights of taxation and policy in the territory to the same. I do hereby appoint Omar Bradford as my official viceroy, and expect that his actions shall reflect my will in the new world.”

The page was stamped with the royal seal, and bore the royal signature. Omar spent an appropriate amount of time appreciating the gesture, before tossing the letter on his desk.

“Lao! Coffee!”

He raised an eyebrow as a short native carried a tray into the room, as if questioning his servant’s performance. He sipped the coffee, and motioned the man out. He waited, his mind on the future.

Soon enough, there was another knock on the door, and this time it was a Carnelian who entered.

“Mr. Bradford, what’s this about a ‘Colonial Squadron?’ It’s hard enough to get fuel here as it is.” Omar’s secretary, Selim, looked concerned as usual. The man couldn’t stand the natives, and always seemed to be under the impression that they could rise up and kill them the next day. Omar smiled at him.

“It’s Emir Bradford now, actually.” He pushed the letter across his desk. “And I wouldn’t worry about that. Our benefactors at home will see to it.” Omar leaned back, still smiling. “How soon can we go to the mainland?”

“The mainla….Mr. Bradf...Emir, is that really wise? We’re stretched thin as it is.”

“Not for long. And it’s not about soldiers. As long we have the sky, the land is ours. I’m going to sail to this king of theirs’ castle, I’m going to demand he disband his army, and when he refuses I’m going to blow his castle to pebbles and disband it for him.”

Selim sputtered. “But, Emir, even if we do have the skies it would take weaponry beyond what we have to destroy fortifications, at least five inch guns!”

“Twelve inch guns.”

“But my lord, we have no such ship!”

At that moment, a reverberating foghorn blasted somewhere overhead, and Omar’s smile became an outright grin. Getting to his feet, he pulled back the room’s curtains, and there in the sky were what looked like two heavy cruisers, escorting a full battleship as it steamed into port.

“The colonial squadron, Selim. More than enough, wouldn’t you say?” He sat back down. “Invite Commodore Pryce to meet me at his earliest convenience, please. And tell Lao to make some tea for the visitor. They’re quite good at that around here.”

Foreign Policy

[Qi Toph Di Zhao] - With his new heavy ships, Omar steams toward Zhao Lin Bei’s seat of government. These rustics will soon learn to respect the superiority of the sky people, and in time, to obey.

[Mejhai - 10 AP] - In a single year, the arms companies of Carnelia send enough weapons to fully modernize Mejhai’s entire army.

[Perzah] - The use of force against Carnelian citizens is unacceptable. Rents cease immediately for the island base, while the air cavalry under general Orbay sits back as if daring Perzah to do anything about it. (Please notice the railroad I started building last turn.)

[Klendari Sultanate] - The Carnelian Sultan has no desire to attend any ceremony in a nation which so disrespects him, and the Carnelian people have no desire to show courtesy to a nation which bombed their nation to ash and subjugated their families. The Sultan does send a coronation gift, though: a crate of Klendari muskets captured at Kesun, all stained with the blood of those foolish enough to tread on Carnelian soil.

Tierra Roja

“Well?!” El Presidente screamed – his face crimson with fury. “Which one of you putas did this?!”

The night sky was alight with tall flames some hundred metres away. Several hovels were caught up in the inferno and local peasants were rushing to and fro, grabbing buckets of water from wells and carting them towards the outskirts of other homes. In the distance, a tinny blare of sirens could be heard. The Cuerpo de Bomberos and their large hoses would be arriving soon, but perhaps not soon enough. The cries of newly homeless children added a morose tone to an otherwise frightening situation.

Two men, Santiago and Patricio, stood with their arms held tightly behind their backs by a small mob of heavily-armed sycophants. Such men often followed El Presidente around for free drinks and policia-free antics. They also acted as impromptu thugs whenever something annoyed El Presidente, and happily engaged in violence for their own amusement. Today’s thuggery involved viciously beating a pair of engineers whom El Presidente and Phillip de Triste were visiting. Phillip had chosen to remain inside his hotel while El Presidente conducted his “investigation.” The two gentlemen had not only caused grievous damage to local infrastructure, they had performed an entirely more devastating crime.

They had destroyed El Presidente’s personal yacht.

“My ship was innocent, you miserable monstruos!” he roared. He flailed his revolver around furiously, jabbing it in the general direction of the tallest flames. “I had barely any time to party in her! I only had time to go caca in my golden crapper once! Once!” He drew very close to the faces of the terrified men and glowered. He stood so close, the men could see the saliva beginning to foam at the corners of his mouth.

“Have you imbéciles any idea just how much tequila I had in that thing?”

As if on cue, an enormous plume of fire erupted from the centre of the blaze, causing locals to scream for more water. El Presidente began grinding his teeth. “Again, I ask; which of you is responsible?”

Santiago and Patricio looked at one-another. Both of them nodded towards the other.

“He did it!” They both yelped, followed quickly by each of them angrily growling towards the other; “liar!”

El Presidente rubbed his temples with a sigh. “Alright alright. Then tell me what happened.”

“Well,” Santiago chimed in despite his bruises, “We were doing some experiments in pre-vitrarium thrust theories.”

“There were lots of crazy ideas on how to lift something off the ground before the first vitra’ ship, you see.” Patricio added.

“And one of those ideas involved mixing oxygen and a rare, refined oil product referred to as ‘gasolina.’”

Liquid propellants, señor! A very interesting subject!”

“Si, si! So, we were putting together this muy big cylinder...”

El Presidente started waving his revolver in the face of Santiago. “Parar ahora. Stop, stop... I am no scientist, but I’m pretty sure both of those things are extremely prone to catching fire, si?”

“Why, yes!” Santiago said. “That’s how we achieve the thrust! A sort of... controlled explosion that pushes the cylinder forward!” The man smiled with excitement. “Isn’t it brilliant?!”

El Presidente pressed the barrel of his gun against Santiago’s head for a moment, before inhaling heavily and drawing it back. “So what did you do then?”

“Well,” spoke Patricio, “we filled the cylinder with the propellants. I think we had two chambers and then they mixed together? Or did we just pour it all in...? I’m not sure. I don’t remember. We then stuck a big cone on top of it so it would fly up straight!”

“Right. So why did your cylinder hit my yacht?”

“We decided to launch it over the town.” Spoke Santiago, shuffling his feet.

“And we mixed kerosene in with the other fuel.” Patricio mumbled quietly.

El Presidente stared at the two, gobsmacked at the sudden admission. He walked away for a moment, muttering, and then returned looking more confused than before.

“Why?!” He stammered.

“I dunno. We were drunk.” Santiago whined.

“We still are drunk!” Patricio slurred.

At this, El Presidente rubbed his eyes. A few moments of silence passed and he looked both men in the eyes, smiling—the sort of fatherly smile one gives their children when they have made an enormous, catastrophic accident that cannot be mended. Beginning quietly he began laugh jovially, joined in turn by his sycophants, the captured engineers, and some nearby locals drawn to the group. El Presidente petted the two engineers on the shoulders, shaking his head with a smile.

He then shot them both and threw their bodies into the fire.

-The infantry of Tierra Roja are spending an inordinate amount of money on marching boots, tents, and camping supplies. Clearly, this is an unnecessary cost in an era when vehicles are easily available. Some rough-and-ready trucks and cars are procured from some very happy automobile companies. They are partially redesigned, repainted, and given to the soldiers for transport.

Westerfield Confederacy

President of the Confederacy Levander Bixby sighs and sinks deeper into his chair. He flicks a match on the table, and promptly lights his cigar. Mr. Bixby was a big man, one with an appetite. His top hat, and black dress suit were crinkled and tattered. Suede patches covered the worn out elbows, and his tie was hand made from the prairie. But one could not say he was a poor man, he was humble. His fortune had been carved out of the prairie, and it’s people. Levander was a man of the people, one everyone could trust. Sadly Mr. Bixby could not say the same for the men arrayed around him today.

Westerfield was a volatile land, and one that had only recently become a true Nation. Many people were fleeing from their past. Millions flooded in on the promise of land and a future. And they were being handed one piece by piece. All were welcome, and their word treasured. Every town and hamlet had its council. Committees were formed to resolve issues, and the people on it came from all walks of life. But as one went higher up, the risk became greater. The risk of power and greed. The new Government of the Confederacy has certainly raised the stakes. No longer could different factions sit in their little plot of land. They were all bound together. Now law and power was decided here, and everyone wanted a representative.

What resulted from the formation was a simple system. The President and his cabinet formed the executive branch. They were in place to finalize the bills that the Chamber would vote in. The Chamber of Ordained was the elite and rich of the Confederates manifesting their power. They ran the various organs of the Confederacy that made it run. However they were kept in check by the massed ranks of the Peoples Council. The largest branch by far, every single settlement was allowed representatives based on their population. Every Westerfield citizen had the right to vote, and they eagerly did so. Nationalities were from across the world, and ideologies varied.  But out on the prairie their culture had blended, and neighbors looked out for one another. This great democratic experiment on the frontier of the known world was a peculiar one.

With no elections coming up, the Confederacy was in a turbulent time of policy making. They had stayed aloof of foreign affairs for a full two decades. Busy times of forming Westerfield, it’s military, law, and everything else. But more and more the world proved to be too connected to ignore. Plenty of wars and fights had erupted. The south itself was a tense place, one of posturing Sultans and savage raiders. For now the various branches of government can all agree, Westerfield needs more internal reform. But friends and trade partners were needed. Envoys are sent out to begin Westerfield’s entry into the global politics.

*In other news Westerfield’s open arms immigration policy continues. Every immigrant is promised some form of payment to help them travel here. There is land aplenty, each citizen guaranteed a plot of land. They will own it in their own name, and gain full citizenship. They can vote, join the military at any rank based on merit, and even rise the ranks of government.

[Mod] Work begins into the new age of warfare. One where the horses are made of steel, not flesh and blood. Westerfield seeks to form a mechanized form of war for it’s infantry. One where conceptual designs like half tracks and armored fighting vehicles can rapidly transport infantry right into the fight. [-2.5k into Mechanized Infantry]

Passive Research

 [Mod] 1; Radio

Researchers from the Hartmen Convention are working on a form of communication superior to the telegraph. With word of innovations in Radio, they seek to emulate this technology. Though late to the game, they hope to learn off those who came before them. The goal is to make a reliable enough device for the military to use.

[Mod] 2; Motorized Infantry

Crawford Motors is contracted by the government to make a reliable military truck. One that can be fitted to carry Troops, supplies, or weapons depending on need. These motorized units will form an entire new wing of the Confederate Armed Forces.

[Mod] 3; Gaunt class Fighters

This new model of Fighter will revolutionize the outdated Bi-planes of the Great War. The Gaunt Fighters will be a closed cockpit two wing fighter. It will be built for Close Aerial Support capability to ground troops. The Plane will be outfitted with machine guns on the wings to combat other fighters. But it will also carry a complement amount of bombs and extra ammo bays. This multi-purpose Fighter will be built to keep up with rapid infantry advances, and support their ground targets. But also be able to combat enemy fighters better then outdated biplanes could.
