The Kingdom of Bellica

as it was the Year of Our Lord, 1894

-+-

”And the stench, Anatole,” continued the splendid Princess Laurnovich to her husband, smiling her graceful, dimpled smile that was so accentuated by her freckles and fierce, fiery hair. “The Azhoni may have never bathed, for the smells that came off them!”

”Oh?” asked her husband [the somewhat unfortunate victim of this particular bout of near-hysteric ranting, which only occurred in the privacy of their own homes], whom had recently returned to Bellograd from his holdings in Vosterburg, where he had been overseeing the production of arms for the subjects in question, before asking if their clan leaders were quite the same. To this, Anastasia nearly cried, having had the undue burden of being seated not twenty seats away from them during the coronation of her father-in-law, and rewarded only with three more dresses. She answered, of course, in the affirmative, and Anatoly [called Anatole only in her sweet Pozhar accent] laughed as he languished upon the chaise longue in their Briartown manor. Their joint retainer, the young Aleksei vi Vostos, a second son of Anatoly’s third-chief vassal in the Vosterburg region, whom exuded about as much confidence and aura as a chair, then asked on the newly promoted Azhoni lieutenant general; a warrior maiden from the Far West, one Yuri Maeda. “Her?” asked Anastasia, scarce looking at Aleksei. “She was the smelliest of them all!”

“Because I’ve been to a million auditions and same thing happens every time. Where I get interrupted because someone wants to get a sandwich. Or, I’m crying and they start laughing. Or, there’s people sitting in the waiting room, and they’re, and they’re like me but prettier and better at the…because maybe I’m not good enough.”

“No, maybe I’m not. Maybe I’m one of those people that has always wanted to do it, but it’s like a pipe dream for me. You know, and then you, you said it. You change your dreams and then you grow up. Maybe I’m one of those people and I’m not supposed to. And I can go back to school and I can find something else that I’m supposed to do. ‘Cause I left to do that. And its been six years and I dont want to do it anymore.”

YEAR IN REVIEW, 1894

-+-

Jan. 3 | Briartown’s Gradic-Klennets-Rienzo Pictures continues production on March 17th, spending 5.000 ABM on the project.

Jan. 4 | The Ministry of Commerce spends an additional 5.000 ABM investing in the Walder Bellisney Company and its cartoons, using it especially to increase cultural familiarity with Bellica in Azhoni children. Maccey and Misney Mouse are to be the two biggest recurring characters in animation history, meant to continue to further Bellican cultural predominance abroad. One might begin to believe Bellican will soon become a natural second language among Anlunders, with the release of so many films geared towards younger audiences.

In regards to the unfortunate appearance of cartoon-pornography, Bellican officials ban it. Some say, however, that there are special viewing rooms in certain alleyway-theaters, speakeasies in which one might order alcohol and watch such perverse movies...

Jan. 5 | But that is not all the Walder Bellisney Company is doing. It invests 5.000 ABM into the animated movie Rezalia, on an ancient Emmerian princess cursed to spin looms for all time, until a dashing prince saves her...

Some rumors say that a deal has been brokered with the Emmerian opposition, investing money separately into the Emmerian fairy tale.

Jan. 8 |  A casting call is posted all over Bellica! Celaya, a movie set in the Tierra Rojan frontier (though filmed, of course, in a Briartown set), follows the tale of an unsavory group of Tierra Rojan gunmen hired by the forces of El Presidente to escort a Bellican noble to Celaya. It is to be the first in a new archetype of movies released by Briartown, called Easterns. The funding for this Eastern is 10.000 ABM, paid up-front by the Bellican government. Apparently, Cardinal Pictures was more than happy to take on the project, given its very low production costs. This film is set to release in the middle of summer, and, funnily enough, nearly all of the movie is in Bellican, using Tierra Rojan only intermittently or for slang like compadre.

Feb. 6 | A second casting call, of even greater magnitude! The Praha Lover is, atypically, an Androsian tragedy. Philip Norgaus, the heir to an aristocratic Volta-Solvanese fortune, meets and instantly falls in love with the Praharavkan Marya Fyodorovna, who is a bridesmaid at his sister's wedding. At first he is drawn in by her mysterious nature and intense passion, but as time passes, he finds her unpredictable behavior increasingly troubling. When Vella asks Philip to commit a horrible, violent act as proof of his love for her, he is unsure whether it's one of her delusions or if she really expects him to act. The movie is set and filmed in Volta-Solvan by ABA Studios, with Briartown investing a full 15.000 ABM on the film, up front! The Praha Lover is set for a midwinter release.

Feb. 9 | The third and final casting call of the year – production companies brazen and emboldened by the successes of Briartown’s recent pictures, perhaps – is in the form of The Duke, another movie with long-form filming similar to End of an Era and March 17th. 10.000 ABM funded to start, with another 10.000 promised the next year, it is an epic on organized crime in Valdek, following the fictitious Cortrovek crime family (who, much like their name, made their start in the Ovek Isles) in the very real crime hub of Fort Kjell. It is a tale of family among the Valdenian mob, with violence kept mostly in undertones. Salok, the prodigal son sent to join the Imperial Army, returns to his family, while his father, called Duke Cortravek, attempts to keep order in an increasingly fracturing household.

Mar. 20 | 20.000 ABM makes its way towards Modevia, for the fifth year.

Jun. 17 | An Airshipyard is built, in Bellograd.

Jun. 19 | The first B-1 Oberluft order is placed.

Jul. 8 | 2 more brigades of Azhoni Mounted Infantry are raised.

Aug. 2 | Two Vitramite mines, two Vitraium Refineries.

Aug. 5 | 10 Civilian Industry is built in Bellograd, and Valdek loans enough money for 3 more. But wait, there's more! The foreign Syullin Empire loans another ten thousand, and so another two are built!

Aug. 9 | An outpost is built!!!

THE GRAND DUCHY OF PRAHARAVKA

“-Martial Law.”

Came the raspy voice of 1st Skylord Sir Pyotr Basevic, devoid of tone and bereft of sleep - he sagged beneath the eyes more than usual - appearing ever the grouch. It was apparent he did not want to be here. In fact he was summoned early morning to attend an Army and Air Corps Staff on the date he planned to take his family out for breakfast.

“Your Excellency, do you not believe that would serve to incite the Gwangnanese further?” inquired a voice across the room, the table opposite, and the seats of the Army Staff.

“We’ve tried peace, Major General Bendarik. And it failed us.” came a voice beside Basevic, that of Rear Admiral Leonid Beznosov.

“With all due respect - if we crack down - and the results do not go as intended. It is our men on the ground with their lives on the line.” said Bendarik.

“Major General, we’re aware of the potential consequences. We believe a soft-handed approach is no longer viable. Gwangnanese guerillas run rampant throughout the mountain, with Nikstranian weapons, mind you - while we sit on our asses.” said Beznosov.

“Martial Law isn’t the answer.” Bendarik merely shakes his head. “We need to convince them to trust us and their regional government. We need to win them over - and that won’t be achieved by setting curfews and firing squadding whoever we please.”

Generals Abramtsov and Kalinin nodded, agreeing with Bendarik.

Rodcheko however interjects, “ Lock down the borders. Shut down arms. Smoke them out of the mountains. Clean up the rest.”

“So you agree?” Basevic raised an otherwise droopy brow, “You make it sound so easy.”

“It is - for those who won’t let madness prevail. I’ll bring order back to Gwangnan, mark my words.”

Rodchenko’s peers conversed among themselves, hushed.

“And if not?” Beznosov squinted.

“His resignation, I suppose.” Major General Vasechkin threw up his hands.

Rodchenko dismissed the possibility, retorting, “Have some faith.”

Basevic sighed, looking over Rodchenko, “Don’t fret, Vasily. We won’t be out to hang you over our collaborative failure.”

“A new world discovered! Sign up to join Qavick industries as it partakes a journey for more green gold!”

Headlines all over Gallia sparked great joy as millions of leagues men eagerly woke to work their daily jobs. Many could say their tables being full as their funds swelled with the income funneled in by war. The only negative opinion drawn on the Klendari aggression is the rampant use of gas but that too is quieted by their great investment of over 52,000 Gallian coins!

A great fiasco for Steddard’s air forces however as over 15,000 personnel go missing on their expedition north across the ocean, their fates completely lost to time. Search efforts have been sadly minimal with most assuming the worst, the storms and air most likely taking them. Their course would be plotted and their last known destination marked before the loss of radio contact for a future expedition.

On the upside for Steddard’s mercenary endeavours, 20,000 foreigners are trained up as elite Gallian marines and sent back home to their respective countries to wage whatever god forsaken war they get themselves into. Surely Qavick thought the Klendari would enjoy having some of the finest defend their vessels against the rampant air men raids.

Home Defense would become a hot topic this year too, the loss of so many to gas and the evident destruction of production in Cumberland has convinced Qavick. The necessary funds and approval to relocate some hundred thousand civilians to better areas of their respective cities to allow the construction of defenses and military checkpoints.

Population: 54,995,960 Gallians

Nation’s Yearly Expenditure Budget: 333,100 GC, 4 Steel, 11 ASP, 0 NP, 30 AP

(11 ASP, 38,000 C) 3 T3 Heavy cruisers are built alongside 3 more freighters in the shipyards.

(10 AP, 31,000 GC) 20,000 Elite Gallian marines are pressed into service as the air fleet grows, moving to serve abroad on foreign vessels. T3 Equipment with elites. To recover at least some of the casualties from the lost expedition, 5,000 T3 Regular infantry is trained.

(150,000 GC) 15 more aerial shipyards are constructed within Gallia to provide more flexibility to yearly production.

(10,000 GC) Constructing fortifications around production centers specifically to counteract foreign subversion. 75 Howitzers being used as anti-airship batteries and a standing guard of 50,000 conscripts are put in place to build and man these new defenses.

(60,000 GC) Research continuation funding.

(10,000 GC) 4 Outpost, 2 in Anlund while another 2 are strategically placed in the New World following discussion with the locals. Specifically the Kahian outpost are transported by 9 Freighters which are escorted by 5 Destroyers and 2 Cruisers. They carry with them the previous force of 5,000 T3 Regulars and the 25 Howitzers, these new arrivals however would graciously bring a small division of 10,000 T3 Conscripts. The man in charge of this is Low-Speaker Colby Jack!

(20,000 GC) 8 Steel mills are built to deal with the rising production of airships.

(14,000 GC) Making a deal with locals!

Research Expenditure: 1 Free Slot

[Slot 1] [Stronger Vitramite Core] Amanda Wright Flights introduces plans to build an even better Vitramite core to provide stronger lift and allow ships to stay afloat under greater stress. [Free Slot] 1900 Completion date.

[Slot 2] [Autocannons] Rapid-firing machine guns worked wonders on infantry but using these weapons for planes and tanks could prove far better with up scaled calibers. 1899 Completion Date. (20,000 GC investment this year, 20,000 invested previous.)

[Slot 3] [Aerial Dropships] Freighter deployed soldiers would find landing in any war zone frankly suicidal. Howitzers and any sort of anti-airship weapons would bring them down in minutes. A middle man powered by vitra could land a squad of soldiers in minutes. 1895 Completion date. (20,000 GC investment this year, 20,000 invested previous.)

[Slot 3] [Vitramite Radar] An alternative to the radar we in the fourth wall know, Vitramite could possibly be detected instead of pinging signals? [10,000 GC] ← This is new Mr Sky.

[Slot 4] [P600 Propeller Engine] Amanda Wrights company morning only works on improving the Vitramite cores of modern ships but they begin to work on a stronger form of propulsion to get their ships and planes moving faster than before [10,000 GC] ← This is new Mr. Sky

TIERRA ROJA

Strange sightings of sombrero-toting men are reported across many nations in the known world. They carry brushes, posters, and large bottles of tequila for their long and lonely nights abroad. They are men of Tierra Roja-- the free, democratic republic far in the east! And they have wonderful news for thrill-seekers the brave, and the terminally short of cash.

Say, amigo, have you heard? Heard of what, you say? You have not felt the thunderous cries of brave muchachos leaping out of their chairs and heading to their nearest airship? Then you clearly have not heard about ...

THE TIERRA ROJA AIR RACE!

Ten long years it has been since the last great event, and now the time has come around again! Rough and hardy tontos with energia alta are needed by the people of Tierra Roja  to compete in death-defying feats of racing! Danger, adventure, adrenalina, and beautiful señoras wait around every corner in this, the GREATEST RACE OF ALL TIME! It is not the event for the feint-hearted, or those of small penes! But you all the worries! What is my life worth risking?

Dios mio, idiota! We would not ask you to risk your testículos for a mere 20,000 pesos. No no no! But would you risk it for...

100,000??!

That is but the first prize, companero! We recognise that a second-place winner DESERVES some return! Second prize is the prize for coming first in the previous race!

20,000!!

And for a lucky third, we’ll even throw in

5000

All paid for generously by our beloved El Presidente Miguel Doritaros!!!

-With little fanfare, huge numbers of builders begin pouring into Zapata Villa. Tonnes upon tonnes of concrete and steel are shipped to massive plots of land purchased the previous year in the central portions and outskirts of the city. Construction begins under the watchful eyes of the military, which appears extremely humorless and tight-lipped when asked about the project. As the months wear on, the structures take shape as massive, grey, cylindrical things that loom over the city with a quiet, oppressive air. Eventually, the shells of the structures are completed and equipment starts being delivered via covered trucks and under heavy guard. Again, the army is tight-lipped, and harsh punishments are meted out to snoops—even if they were drunk! Tall, barb-wired fences surround the new concrete colossi, and are patrolled regularly by extremely sober soldiers and guard dogs.
(-10,000 pesos, 10AP, and 2 steel production towards six mysterious, concrete cylinders)

Research:

-[Funded] In collaboration with the Praharavkan government, a new initiative to create a next generation, next generation fighter is begun. The planned fighter would combine elements from examples of the P-22, as well as the UAM 89, GfR-89, and Lienska Li-3. Creating an aircraft which is both fast and nimble, exceeding in air superiority operations. The new fighter is designated the V&M F-94  (20,000) + (11,000 from Praha)

DW1-640x300.png

-[Funded] Along with the V&M F-94, both Praharavka and Valdek eagerly begin to work on wing mounted rockets, to improve the effectiveness of their fighters against ground targets. Additionally, the rockets are planned to be able to function with timed fuzes, allowing more effective air-to-air usage. Seeing as they are just down scaled torpedos, it shouldn't be too hard, right? … (5,000)

1894

A year of dreadful news, but also news that lighten the hearts and moods of everyone in the Empire. Early this year, the Emperor becomes proud father of a roundfaced litte princess, whose cheerfulness brings joy to court and country! Guan-Yu Sule-Bahk is born, healthy and strong, blessed by the spirits. Whilst she has many years still to grow up and learn, already some murmur that she might bring great changes and new hope to Johwa in light of the circumstances of their tribal kin to the North-East.

The Emperor does not idle however and continues to steer the nation through the tides of politics, trade, war and peace. Stoic in his intentions, nobody truly knows what his ultimate goal might be, but for now the councillors and dedicants seem content. One of the recent achievements are the new train engine running on Vitramite, which in combination with the ongoing infrastructure improvements should knit together the spacious country, as well as, making travelling on ground safer and easier. Not everyone can or wants to fly.

The young Princess Elizabeth, barely a year in court, already convinced the more open-minded members of the family and country to support her notion of founding a research commission under her, to pursue projects that serve all of Syullin and in extent the citizens and people of Johwa!

Actions:

The new Emperor Jun-Seo continues his policy of industrial development, in order to increase the GNP, as well as the resources available to all areas of the nation. Still influenced strongly by the Dedicants, he also continues the military investments:

The rail system needs to brought to full speed, in line with the newly started development of the new train models, he wants that all cities and towns have full access to the network. Furthermore, the roads need to improved and paved accordingly, to allow for easier traffic, motorized or not, and wide enough so they may avoid eachother and not clog up the roads. (Another -20,000 Syl into Infrastructure; Total: 1889: 4k, 1890: 20k, 1891: 20k, 1892: 20k 1893: 20k)

Another two trade depots are opened due to the new influx of merchants from the Old World. (-20,000 Syl for 2 Trade Depot)

Hand in hand with the Eastward Expansion over the mountains, the Emperor decrees that the newly staked lands shall be settled by the people of Syullin and in extent be open for the people of Johwa. Be it from the tribes or from the neighbouring nations, anyone is welcome to settle there, as long as they do not anger the spirits and maintain the balance of  the land. The outpost is to be fortified and expanded upon to form a first proper township. The surrounding lands are claimed and parcelled for the volunteers and settlers that are coming from the homelands to the West. The previously sent Light Infantry Brigades are there to assist. (-5,500 Syl)

Foreign loan requests are granted to the Kingdom of Bellica. (-10,000 Syl)

As per agreement with the rowdy and sometimes rather rude Rojans, specially designed Houses of Harmony are being established in their cities and towns, to bring spirit and balance to them, whilst retaining the Rojan distinctiveness. (-10,000 Syl for the half paid by Syullin for 8 Houses of Harmony)

Research (Passive 3 slots + 10% bonus):

The old Longhorn Rifles brought over (with schematics even, probably to be able to reproduce them as needed) from the Old World have proved outdated and very clunky. Whilst there was originally no need to improve upon the ol’ reliable, the Dedicants deem it suitable to upgrade the general equipment, introduce standardization and allow for easier construction of infantry rifles, as the Longhorns were mostly made by hand, with only a few steps automated. They wish to call it the Bohoja Rifle.

(Started 1889, a new bolt-action rifle to replace the predecessor from the Old World, due in 1891; concluded)

The improvement of agricultural methods has been a longstanding issue with the Empire. Whilst mostly forgotten due to other more important “concerns”, a new wind to push projects regarding optimal crop rotation and soil retention has come from nobody else than the Empress herself. Having a garden herself, where she grows vegetables for her family and most importantly for her dying husband, it is a very personal topic to her. By her claims, good soil gives good crops. Good crops are inhabitated by good spirits that give good life essence to the people, to prolong their lives and increase their fertility, making them strong and healthy as a whole.

(Re-started 1889, after six years of “pause”, due in 1897; Investments 17,050 Syl (1892))

In order to not only increase the capacity, but also the speed of transportation for wares and people across the growing Empire of Syullin, a new train engine is to replace the old fashioned coal powered models. Vitramite comes in mind as a potential candidate.

(Started 1889, due in 1894; concluded 1894)

Communication over long distances proves to be still difficult. The wiring is often faulty and outdated, the cables not always capable of resisting the unregular electricity from the power grids of the nation. So, Project Bosang, is meant to streamline and optimize these grids of the nation. Starting with Voltage, Ampere, et cetera, they are to eliminate and unify the methods of generating power as well as bringing them up to par, so that the cables (and other devices of course) may not suffer the same issues they had in the past.

(Started 1891, due 1898)

Whilst herbal medicine has always been a strength of the inhabitants of the continent Johwa, these remedies are sometimes not readily available for the men on exploration or in war. Fresh ingredients of certain healing herbs do not grow everywhere, and as such, the newly found research commission under Princess Elizabeth of Brennan pursues to amend that through the invention of methods that allow to convert the well-practiced healing concoctions into lasting, modern pills and medicine. It’s a monstrous task for sure, as the Library of Healing in the capital houses thousands of century-old manuscripts, but nevertheless, the effort must be made for the good of all the people!

(Started 1894; due ??)

Westerfield Confederacy

The War in the West has erupted this year. For long enough the Confederacy stood and made ready. Sardia is torn in the flames of war, and needed sound heads to heal it. And so General Joe Brayden is authorized to take the Westerfield Army on an offensive action. As reports filter in, he is already liberating Nazr. The fighting seems to be mainly with Ozan, a long standing rival. Who knows what the war will bring as we move forward? For now Westerfield focuses inwards for it’s economy.

[Mod Please] “Vulcanized Rubber Off-Rod Tires”

The Prairie of Westerfield is harsh on their military trucks and other vehicles. On the market they could not find dedicated military tires allowing trucks and APCs to reliably travel off of main roads. The Military will be dispatched to find a working model for their mechanized and motorized troops. The ultimate goal being reliable tires to allow more rapid and smooth transit over off road conditions.

The Karakhwa

>Cloud Hunter sat in her throne hunched over with her elbows on her knees and her head down, staring at the floor in front of her intently. Blood dripped from her fingers, dribbling down her gore-soaked forearms and staining her finely crafted leather pants.

“Where is Kiss the Sun?” she asked.

One of the priestesses stepped forward. She wore a grey cloak of fine cloth, with a golden mask hiding her features. It stared back at Cloud Hunter and she could almost imagine a small smile curling its golden edges. “Oh Shà Hashtaal, he is in his quarters, sleeping.”

“Have him brought here,” she said, turning away from the priestess and leaning back in her chair. The open sky roiled with clouds ahead of her, as the room opened up onto the back of her Battlecruiser, The Heart of the Storm.

He didn’t take long to arrive, haggard and thin as he was, she had still given him fine clothing, though he wore it poorly.

The moment he stepped through the door, he bowed low, and kept bowing until he arrived in front of her and knelt, with his brow against the floor. “Your summoned me, Shà Hashtaal?”

“I cannot sleep,” said Cloud Hunter.

Silence for a beat. “You wi-”

“I was not done,” she snapped, and she saw him flinch. Good. “I cannot sleep,” she said again, plucking a dagger from her waist and slipping it around her fingers like water. “When I close my eyes, I see Heart of Iron, I see the feats that earn him glory against the Klendari.” Her hand closed around the dagger so tight that her flesh turned white. “He is claiming my glory in the skies.”

Another pause. “Shà Hashtaal, may I sit?”

A flash of anger drove through her like a dart and for a moment, she contemplated kicking him backwards into the sky. She could have done with Heart of Iron, she should have done it, just like she had before. With a growl, she sprang from her throne and stepped over the dessicated corpse of her last sacrifice, her bare feet splashing in the congealing blood.

“Sit, then, and speak. Your goddess will heed your words.”

“You are too generous,” murmured Kiss the Sun, sitting with his legs crossed and looking up at her.

“Yes?” said Cloud Hunter, pacing back and forth in front of her throne.

“Go home, Cloud Hunter,” he said, and she froze, turning to him with wide eyes.

For the first time in years, she took a good look at him, his emaciated body, his hollow eyes, with deep dark bags gathered beneath them like cobwebs in the corner of a disused room. He looked like half a corpse if not more.

Around her, her priestesses rose as one, small blades appeared from their sleeves, their golden masks seeming to glare down at Kiss the Sun with holy wrath. But Cloud Hunter held up her hand and walked up to him herself, grabbing him by his shirt and lifting him up. So light, so frail.

“What did you just say?” she whispered in a flat voice, so much flatter than her violently spiking fury.

“Go home, Cloud Hunter,” he said again, a weak hand scrabbling at her wrist. “Go home, back to your people. Join again in the cause of the Karakhwa. Forgo this dream of yours, it will only lead you to ruin. Do this, or death will take you so much more swiftly than it should.” He took a shuddering breath.  “Be the woman you once were again.”

His body was limp, slack and the weakness of his flesh made Cloud Hunter snarl. She lifted him up and carried him over to the edge, until his toes dragged against the laquered wood that divided sky from ship.

She leaned forward and whispered into his ear. “My mother once tried to stop me. She threatened to tell our chief what I was doing, what my ambitions were.” She sighed and leaned her head against his shoulder for a moment. “She thought she was being good to me. That she knew better than I how to live my life.” She pulled back and looked at him. “Do you know what I did to her?”

He opened his mouth just as she let him go with a shove. He tipped over the edge and fell, tumbling into the darkness below. “Hmh,” said Cloud Hunter after a pause. He hadn’t screamed, that was good.

Then she turned back to her priestesses, who once more knelt around her blood-covered throne of bone, gold and stone. “Summon the warlfeet. There are heathens to be killed.”

A CHANCE ENCOUNTER

The light cruiser Revolutionare burst through the clouds, flying at her cruising speed at twenty-one knots as she darted over the sea below. The cruiser looked awkward today; for it was a Sunday, washing day in the Revolutionary Navy. Strung between the funnels on twine, 189 pairs of working clothes flapped in the breeze.

“That one looks pretty large sir, why don’t we pass through her as well?” said the quartermaster at the wheel. The captain examined the cloud in question, lying on the starboard bow, before nodding with approval.

“You may make your course thirty degrees to starboard then.” The ship, agile indeed, made her turn. The captain checked the compass, cross-referencing it to the chart pinned to the wall of the bridge with a diligent eye. Marked in red, the cruiser’s course was supposed to take her in a giant loop running far, far west of the Aurelian border – a patrol for catching smugglers, the usual work Revolutionaire was assigned. And based on the last sighting of land, the cruiser shouldn’t be too far off course today, plying her way through mostly empty skies.

The Revolutionaire entered the cloud; few sensations were more rewarding in the service. The entire ship picked up a layer of cool condensation, from bow to stern, bridge and laundry alike. Off-shift crew had astutely lined the railings, their dirtied faces turned into the wind as the world became a formless void of white water vapour. The engineer even rigged buckets to collect it, ever cautious about the dangers of an overheating engine. And then, just like that – the Revolutionaire exited the cloud.

“What the- Helm, hard’a port! Engines full stop!” cried the captain. In front of them, barely a stone’s throw away, a wall of metal. The shock was immense; they were sailing in sky that should have been totally devoid of ships. Yet right in front of them... something massive, unearthly. Revolutionaire, maneuverable as ever, answered her helm just in time. The cruiser shot past the giant, her hull passing by its massive forward turret as the behemoth, performing its own emergency maneuver, dropped altitude. The quartermaster brought the ship back to port again as the two warships recollected themselves – the behemoth rising to meet the cruiser. And a behemoth it surely was – at least three times her size, with great turrets stacked fore and aft housing guns at least fifteen inches or greater. This was something new, it defied the captain’s wildest imagination... but was it dangerous?

“WHAT SHIP?” cried a voice from the bridge of the towering warship. The captain seized up; the accent was totally unfamiliar. He paused, scanning the crew’s faces – they were terrified too, leaning over the rail and gawking at the gigantic warship. “I SAY, WHAT SHIP?” repeated the voice. The captain grabbed the speaking funnel strapped on the underside of the compass box in a knee-jerk reaction, and after summing up the courage to speak...

“THIS IS REVOLUTIONAIRE! OF THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF AURELIA!”

“WE ARE HIS MAJESTY’S SHIP THE PRINCE ALBERT!” replied the voice, “OF THE GRAND PRINCIPALITY OF CUMBERLAND!” Consumed by the significance of the moment, the two ships came alongside carefully, the behemoth lowering a ladder down to meet the cruiser’s deck.

“Come aboard, captain – I have a pot of... well, it’s called tea...” said one of the Albert’s officers, apparently their own commanding officer. The captain could see the faces of the foreigners as he cautiously placed his foot on the ladder; and felt hotly embarrassed as he remembered his ship still had hundreds of pieces of clothing all over the superstructure, flapping in the wind ...

The meeting of Revolutionaire and the Cumberland battlecruiser Prince Albert markS the first point of contact between the People’s Republic of Aurelia and a civilized “Old World” power. From this spontaneous meeting of countries and cultures in the middle of nowhere, a diplomatic revolution is occurring. The second Revolutionare sped into her base, carrying reams of dispatches on the names of unknown countries, charts of mysterious lands and seas, and hastily-made drawings of titanic warships, Aurelia changed forever. A flurry of feverish activity breaks out of the capital in response to the newfound existence of these advanced civilizations:

-President Cornielle dispatches messages to every Old World country on the Cumberland naval chart he now keeps in his office The Aurelian Republic formally extends its greetings to these collected powers.

-The National Bank advertises treasury bonds, priced at 10k each with a fixed rate of 5% interest compounded annually. Trade partners are able to borrow at 6%. The Bank reserves the right to negotiate on these rates. Meanwhile, private sector buyers have access to 100-1000k individual bonds with 2% interest.

Though Cumberland is the first country to be in touch with the Aurelian Republic, Cornielle finds his diplomatic efforts most productive with the EMPIRE OF VALDEK. By the end of the year, Valdek and Aurelia sign...

THE DOUBLE ALLIANCE

The Double Alliance is based off a document, signed with the following terms in the early winter:

I: The Empire of Valdek bestows the Aurelian Republic rights to its aerial shipyards for the construction of ships of war, provided that the Republic pays for the material and financial costs incurred.

II: Aerial architects of the Aurelian Republican Navy will be transported to Valdek, for the purpose of designing ships of war utilizing Valdenian methods and technology.

III: The Empire of Valdek and the Aurelian Republic will establish connections of trade.

IV: The Empire of Valdek will buy three treasury bonds from the Aurelian National Bank equivalent to 30,000 gold at 2.5% interest compounded annually.

V: The Empire of Valdek and the Aurelian Republic  accord each other limited basing rights for its aerial and naval forces.

The Aurelian Republic, to Cornielle’s satisfaction, has found a willing and able ally.

Furthermore, trade connections are established, to be enacted the next year, with the following countries:

The Carnelian Coast
Trade League of Gallian
Westerfield Confederacy
Republic of Emmeria

The Aurelian Republic offers trade relationships to any Old World powers interested in being involved in trade with a fast-growing economy with reliable credit.

-The fellow “native” powers of the continent are also offered trade relationships.

“Citizens of Klendar! Abandon your weapons! Abandon your posts! Abandon all hope!”

-Tigin Ozmert, crossing into Klendari land

Two years ago, the Klendari Sultan asked for blood, and now blood is what he shall have. As half a million Pact soldiers pour across the retaken Kesun line,  little stands left to oppose them save inexperienced reservists. Under these conditions they cannot help but flood the nation, and this they do: following the lead of Ozmert and Ben-Yosef, they tear across the countryside in a vengeful push for the capital, the less experienced troops securing the north.

Given the circumstances, the Arbiter Abdul calls for unconditional surrender from the Klendari sultan. Pact troops and air cavalry advance without hesitation, and any forces that do not lay down their arms are soon torn to bits, whether by the savage Karakhwa or the hateful veterans of Karaman. The Sultan’s directions are clear: occupy as much land as possible, so that an understanding can be reached with the communists without bloodshed. Orbay’s wishes are a bit different: take the Klendari capital, and humble their pathetic Sultan once and for all.

The Pact has prevailed, and all that remains is to pick up the pieces...

Juverin Republic

The desert was relatively quiet, aside for the sounds of two smaller airship engines heard in the distance. The sand was radiating, as a group of men and women clothed in long sleeved gear with scarves protecting their faces marched across the vast Slaic Desert, escorted by the First Slaic Corp.

Octavia wiped the sweat off her forehead, as she sat atop a tower above the work camp. Overseeing one of her prized assets, one she stole from under the nose of the disgusting pig Cicero. She underbid him, but her charm and seductive sway over the poor soul who sold it pushed her ahead. Hell’s Gate Mining company, wasn’t much of volunteer employment as it was an internment camp. However, it’s profit margins were massive. It was one of the most active Vitarium mines in the Republic with one of the lowest employment costs, government subsidies for security and production the company was ripe for profiteering off the backs of misguided souls.

She turned her back from the window, looking down towards the prison walls. Lined with armed guards of the First Slaic Corp veterans. Then back to Octavian, smiling at him. “Octavian, I do appreciate the visit. However, if it is something you want then spit it out.” Giving him a cold stare, with a slight smirk on her face. She knew how much he hated abrasiveness when it came between them. Her eyes wandered his face, scanning every detail of it. Hoping to get a thrill out of his reaction. She was not met with one however.

“This **** again?” He thought to himself, as he adjusted his clothing and stood up straight. Reaching his hand out for a file, and handing it over to her. Clearing his throat before speaking up, “We were tipped off by an anonymous source detailing a communist uprising. I am locating them here. Along with some more men. Work them until death.” He smiles, as he turns back around. “I’ll compensate you more for this. I do not want this growing out of control.”

All she could do was smile, more free labor was more free money for her use. Her corruption to fester deepr into Octavian’s mind. More time for him to delve into the dark history that had blanketed Juverin and it’s shady practices over the years. Hell she already betrayed him by handing off information about the Lion-6 shipping routes to the Klendari. “Yessir.” She looked at him as he shook as head when her grin over took the smile.

STEEL HORIZON

1894

Peace in Sardia! After nearly three years of bitter fighting, the 3rd Klendari-Carnelian War has come to a juddering end, after the Klendari state largely collapsed, mostly due to a number of factors, such as; incompetent allies, military defeats, crippling debt and a remarkably effective communist insurgency. The political landscape of Sardia will never be the same - much of the continent is now united under Pact jurisdiction, but huge swathes of the Klendari state have fallen to the Klendari Communist Party, who now seek to keep hold of as much of their nation as possibly. The First Internationale, reportedly delighted at this new foothold in the south, is apparently pumping in vast quantities of arms, supplies and aid, in order to prop up the new Peoples’ Republic of Klendar. Sultan Selim - in the manner of General Refik Pasha - put a pistol in his mouth rather than be taken alive. The capital of Iskarra fell not long afterwards. The Shah of Perzah - a boy of only 4 years - was nowhere to be found. Apparently his guardians spirited him to safety. That boy - following the abdication of the Ozani Royalty, the end of the male line of Klendari Royalty - is now the most prolific heir in the world, being first in line to three of the six Sardian thrones.

Carnelian luck in seizing territory has been somewhat grim. The four cities in the far north, including the regional capital of Iskarra, the industrial hubs of Ankeyf and Artinople, along with the port city of Sayas, fall into their hands. In the south, however, the KCP rather magically consolidates their hold over much of their territories. Almost as if they had been planning this for years. Whole garrisons, preferring the Communists to the Carnelians, turn their coats and hastily draw up ragged red banners over their positions. Much of the industrial south is devastated by incessant Karakhwan raids, however, and it will be a long time before the new Peoples’ Republic begins to resemble anything like the former Great Power. None can deny that the Great Power of Sardia is now Carnelia, along with her many allies.

Volta-Solvan, thoroughly embarrassed and more than a little infuriated by the escapade in the south, has to deal with the resultant fallout in their financial sector, which is now down some 14 million solats - the only recompense from the whole charade being the entire Klendari warfleet. Elections are called within the month, and Prime Minister Vagn Axelson and his Conservative Party are thoroughly trounced in the ballot. A majority is secured by the National Party, led by a certain Rolf Johann Karl Frydenlund, the heir to the Imperial House of Frydenlund and more popularly known by the reputation of his house as Karolus V.

With a new, nationalist leadership in Volta-Solvan(along with their seizure of the Klendari fleet), the continuation of the CNSR’s global revolution, increasing fascist fervor in Modevia and general tensions between minor Anlund powers, a new naval arms race begins, and all parties show great motivation despite the expense. Volta-Solvan spends the year improving upon Klendari dreadnoughts and building a dozen new destroyers. The CNSR, eager to catch up to the premier naval powers, begins the year by moving thousands of workers from arms factories to naval factories. With this sudden and vast increase in manpower, they seek to lay down 6 dreadnoughts at record speed. Modevia, on the other hand, continues with the steady build up of aerial forces, preferring to build 2 dreadnoughts, 2 battlecruisers and 6 destroyers. The CSAC continues with a policy of short range, torpedo attack squadrons, building nearly 30 corvettes and a dozen destroyers, but also - surprisingly - opts to construct two carriers.. Grenheim and Estfeld, ever at each others throats, both opt to purchase another two dreadnoughts each, while the introverted Vost Confederacy lays down a fresh dreadnought and 3 destroyers.

In the west, the Emperor of Koibitia - backed by the Valdenians - has begun a swift and violent campaign to cement his power over his entire empire, stamping out rebellious lords, local factions and far flung warlords, in a short year the Emperor makes enormous strides in imposing his direct rule over the country.

Gwangnan continues to be a province of troublesome nature for the Praharavkans, and they appear largely unappeased by the measures undertaken. CNSR arms still flow in vast quantities, and despite brutal Praharavkan crackdowns by ground and by air, the Gwangnanese fight back ever more ferociously. Alarmingly, by the end of the year, news reaches Praharavkan command of ever more volunteers flocking to join the Seki Kaigun, the constantly expanding army of Gwangnanese freedom fighters. Ironically, the heavy handed Praharavkan brutality, following so closely behind the attempts to win the Gwangnan people over, has made their image of a conquering tyrant even more hard and fast. The Seki Kaigun, once relatively passive, continue their operations and suddenly Praharavkan soldiers become a prime target.

Grenheim and Estfeld, ever bitter rivals, continue their famed rivalry with entries to the Great Tierra Rojan Air Race, both sending officially sponsored pilots with the best racing yachts money can buy, both determined to defeat the other.

The feud between Venzywood and Briartown heats up. Briartown is, undoubtedly, the better studio of the two at present, but a great number of directors and actors who had yet to become associated with a major studio have become very “put-off” the idea of signing up with Briartown, what with their now unfortunate reputation for homosexuality and syphilis.

In the Confederation of Socialist Anaraein Cantons, the Steel Horizon finally nears completion. Hundreds of miles of vast air and ground defences mark the borders of the CSAC, and they are well manned, especially along the Cumberlandic and Valdenian borders.

THE ARCHDUCHY OF ANDROS-BELLICA

The illegality of such pornography makes it a novelty of rather extreme value, and the market bristles in demand. It quickly comes to the stage that the Bellican police cannot actually enforce the law because it has become so widespread that they’d have to arrest themselves as well.

In terms of films, Briartown proves to have a bad year. Both the Praha Lover and Celaya flop in the theatres, costing money. -8000G

However, both March 17th and The Duke prove to be incredible successes, and memories of the less worthy films are quickly wiped away.+12000G

Rezalia proves to be a rather impressive piece of animation and writing, though it finds little traction outwith Emmeria. +2000G

THE GRAND DUCHY OF PRAHARAVKA

Attempts at crackdown in Gwangnan do not contain the growing insurrection, and it is clear that the insurgents are better armed than ever, despite the closed border. -25% Gwangnan incomes (rounded) -1000 Infantry

The savagery of Rodchenko’s crackdowns causes uproar across the lower classes of Gwangnan. He has some success in rooting out some communist nests, but largely all he manages to do is inflame the populace. The straw that breaks the camel’s back is a gory one. Rodchenko deploys troops to break up a Communist Party rally. When the crowd begins to riot instead of disperse, the general has his men open fire into the crowd, and thousands are killed in the following violence. As a result, full scale revolt explodes across the country, late in December. (Discord)

The Praharavkans do not succeed in finding any men willing to join their cause as soldiers, though they do succeed in empowering the local police forces. +10’000 T1 Irregulars.

The Harpelites have little choice in this matter…

The F-94 will be ready for 1897.

The Skylift will be ready for 1900.

THE REPUBLIC OF EMMERIA

Mines will be ready for 1896.

With such an enormous budget, rocket artillery will be ready by 1898.

THE GALLIAN TRADE LEAGUE

The head of the Vitramite radar project falls to his death in a totally FREAK accident one morning. Apparently he slipped on ice while walking across a bridge, before plummeting to the concrete below.

The P600 will be ready for 1898.

TIERRA ROJA

Thousands once again flock from the world over for the GREATEST SPECTACLE IN AERIAL RACING. Candidates from every nation in the world (well, the ones that count as nations rather than punch bags) enroll in the Air Race. It is the event of a DECADE! +15kG

Tierra Roja has little trouble in putting the infrastructure in place - apparently every nation in the world is eager to receive play by play action on the race, and a radio network is very much in place for the event.

THE GRAND PRINCIPALITY OF CUMBERLAND

After weeks of dangerous and hellish diving - resulting in many grotesque injuries and burns - the Restoyn is finally raised from the bed of her shallow grave.

Batteries will be prepared by 1897.

THE EMPIRE OF VALDEK

The air tests find the planes rank so;
GfR-92, P22, GfR-89, UAM, V-87

The pros and cons are quite simple. The P22 and the two GfRs are pure superiority fighters, the UAM is a fighter-bomber and the V-87 is trash.

+1 development by 1897 with continued investment.

The F-94 will be ready for 1897.

Rockets will be ready by 1896.

THE EMPIRE OF SYULLIN

Modern medications will be available for 1898.

With the current dangers facing Johwa, tribesmen from the north and some few remaining Sodrieux warriors march forth to Syullin, joining their arms with those of the Emperor, in hopes of defending their continent from the Karakhwa. +10’000 T3 Infantry, +5000 T3 Cavalry +150 howitzers.

THE WESTERFIELD CONFEDERACY

The Westerfielders do the undemocratic and occupy Ozan. +3 Cities, +3 Commercial Districts, +10 HI, +3 Steel mills, +20 million population.

Tires will be ready for 1896.

THE KARAKHWA

The defenses of the Throne of Thunder will be fully complete by 1900.

Cloud Hunter takes control of Carrieux bending the nation to her iron will and her madness.

Karakhwa raids brings in cash. +100kG

THE VENZEATIC LEAGUE

With such little funding, most Venzywood films simply flop this year, but the Briar has Thorns proves to damage the reputation of the rival industry, and actors and directors flock to Venzywood instead this year.

THE AURELIAN REPUBLIC

All native neighbours agree to trade. All Old World NPCs are also agreeable to trading.

THE CARNELIAN SULTANATE

After three years of war, the Klendari Sultanate finally collapses, and Carnelia is confirmed the victor. Still, the greatest thorn in the seizure of Klendar proves to be the KCP, who mobilise men and defectors with frightening speed, giving whole garrisons amnesty to draw them over to their side. Even the capital falls into their hands, though it is little more than a show city. The Carnelians are left with the heavily industrialised north, while Baresh gains the two border cities beside them. Otherwise, the KCP consolidates their rule over their shattered nation. +4 cities, 4 trade depots, 4 commercial districts, 10 steel mills, 15 heavy industry, 10 airshipyards, 10 civilian industry, 35 million population.

THE JUVERIN REPUBLIC

The expedition is instantly mobbed by tribals, who offer to sell their wares. Most seem to be selling the livestock kind of goods, but some hold lumps of glowing green rocks, and promise to bring more...
