The Death of Content Moderation

Hey all,

It’s been a policy of ours since 2012 that once you reach ten warn points on our forums you get banned from all mediums, no questions asked.

It did not matter if your warn points were from four years ago. It didn’t matter if since then you’ve been on fantastic behaviour and today you slipped up. If you were at 9, a minor mistake will set you back with a typically-permanent ban.

Until today. As of this post, there is no longer any arbitrary number which bans you. There are also a number of other changes.

  • Warn points are to be used from now on purely to document misbehaviours / rule-breaks.
  • We’re removing the warn point appeal process as the lengthy bureaucratic exercise is effectively pointless now.
  • Their purpose is now no longer punitive but rather communicative: to open a dialogue. I would like to encourage players who receive warning points to keep an open-mind and to cooperate thoughtfully. So, warning points themselves will be much more commonplace.
  • When handing a severe warning point, moderators will open a discussion in a designated channel about the player. Given their recent history, should the team take further action or not? We hope by doing so we can avoid biased verdicts by having most (if not all) Moderators give their input on the issue.

At the end of the day, warnings are a tool to help you. They communicate to you when you are crossing inappropriate territory, something you may disagree with but may be against our rules or community guidelines nonetheless.

Content Moderation Retires

Content moderation fails in three key ways: as a punishment, as a deterrent, and lastly as a moderating tool. Toxic behaviour led staff to step in and consider a discipline that will prevent the player from posting any further toxic content. In the end, we settled for content moderation.

At the end of the day though, the story with CM’s? The punished party is the moderator. They are the ones who will sift through the same content, and content that one moderator would not approve—a second did. If you have a blue friend in your pocket then your CM is just a fancy badge. The community can assume the player is clean as a whistle, since they only see the approved content anyhow.

What’s worse, when a post slips through this baby monitor, the offender can believe that their barely passable remarks are not only acceptable but even endorsed. It’s simple hand-holding and it wastes everybody’s time.

Punishment Scaling

Content moderation was also unfair as it frequently had no expiry date. We’re going to make discipline consistent with what you are told when it happens. There won’t be a surprise extension when it comes down to the final minutes. Provided that misbehaviour isn’t so bad we will leave most cases as a simple warning.

So, if we have to go one step further, what can we use instead? Well, if one gets to this stage then we will restrict their posting ability for a chosen duration. If they’re fairly fresh on history then they can expect a few days. On the other hand, if they’ve got history, they may feel the heat for a month, maybe two.

Obviously this doesn’t apply to straight bans, if someone posts something like gore or pornography then we will terminate their access to LotC services. As usual, repeat offences will bring staff to consider more severe discipline.

Players who are currently content moderated will have their status replaced with posting restriction. If you believe your case does not warrant this please contact a moderator via Discord.

Interconnected Mediums

Please respect the forums and do be careful. If you are severely restricted from the forums, an accompanying shorter ban will also apply in-game. Excessively disruptive behaviour that, for example, leads to a month long post-restriction, may also result in a week long in-game ban.

Thank you.

So, lotc mediums. I guess those mediums are the forum, the server, lore games discord, staff discord, new player discord and the official discord of lotc, right? Just wanting to get this clear, because I surely do not want to be banned for something I'm doing on a discord server that isn't a lotc medium.

Have a great day and also, this is a good change, next change I hope comes with the new combat rules.

Let’s all stop whinging about every other administrative step and actually endorse that ****’s being done. Do not belittle the small (at least in your eyes) achievements in fighting what has been a lengthy dark age for rules and forums.

Put down your little (justifiable) hate-boners, change is gradual.
